RE: Windows Login delay when wireless card is enabled

Can you disable the wireless card in the docked profile? This will stop
the logon process using the wireless card at all during logon in the
office.

The LAN card showed below the wireless in the order, but changing it and
rebooting didn't seem to solve the problem.

This is a wild speculation.

If you open up the Network Connections and hit Advanced Advanced
Settings, you will note that the wireless connection is higher then
the wired. Try swapping those around and seeing if that speeds things
up. Even with the wireless off (but not removed) it may still be
trying and network time out is what? 180 seconds by default I think.

Could be wrong, busy day.

Plus knowing that the folks at Sunbelt stand close behind any product they
sell makes me lean toward Vipre. I know at the moment I have still not
moved from the 1.0 NOD32 console to the 2.0 console because the
documentation is so horrible. I am still not confortable with it. I know
it works but they recently had a bad defination get through that caused all
kinds of issues in my network. No one is perfect and that was their first

log out and back in when they are given elevated rights. My research seems

Best practice suggestion

2008-08-07 Thread Joe Heaton
Scenario:

We have Citrix Presentation Server 4.0, with 2 published apps at the
moment.

We also have an old Citrix server, running 1.8 Metaframe, which is
acting as a remote desktop for our Executive Director.

We have received a shipment of 7 new laptops. Two separate situations
to consider:

1) One of the laptops is going to the Executive Director (Our head
muckety-muck). He currently is using Citrix Program Neighborhood to
access a published desktop on our old Citrix server (1.8 Metaframe). My
thoughts on his situation are to setup a mobile VPN for him, and just
have him VPN in, and voila, it's like he's sitting at his desk.

2) Another laptop is going to a person who says they need to be
able to access the published apps while on the road. I have tested Web
Interface, internally, which seems ok, but we don't have an SSL cert for
it. Should I make a redirection within IIS, setting it up so that
outside users would hit it as a sub-page of our public site (i.e.
https://www.etp.ca.gov/citrix https://www.etp.ca.gov/citrix )? Or
should I go with a VPN there also, and have them connect as they do
normally, through a shortcut on the desktop?

We don't have Secure Gateway, and I don't think we're going to purchase
it for a handful of people, so that is not an option.

The VPN would be using my Watchguard x750 firewall's built-in mobile
client VPN feature.

Any suggestions/tips/advice is appreciated, as I need to come up with a
good, secure, viable solution soon.

Thanks,

Joe Heaton

Re: Best practice suggestion

2008-08-07 Thread Tom Miller
Here's what we do:

- offer users the web interface. We have many staff in residential
locations with broadband connections. This works for them and they are
happy they can finally get to their files on the file servers. I like
this option as I can set the web interface to time out.

and/or

- not sure if PS 4.0 has it, but 4.5 has it and it works great: the
Program Agent. Can be used internally or externally. For internal
users we have the agent auto-logon. For external users, we have them
use the Citrix Access Gateway VPN client then login. You could probably
use whatever VPN client you have though and then have users login to the
agent.

We don't present a desktop or any users. We make no promises about
desktop or appearance - just that the application will be available.

Tom

Joe Heaton [EMAIL PROTECTED] 8/7/2008 11:29 AM

1) One of the laptops is going to the Executive Director (Our
head muckety-muck). He currently is using Citrix Program Neighborhood
to access a published desktop on our old Citrix server (1.8 Metaframe).
My thoughts on his situation are to setup a mobile VPN for him, and just
have him VPN in, and voila, it’s like he’s sitting at his desk.
2) Another laptop is going to a person who says they need to be
able to access the published apps while on the road. I have tested Web
Interface, internally, which seems ok, but we don’t have an SSL cert for
it. Should I make a redirection within IIS, setting it up so that
outside users would hit it as a sub-page of our public site (i.e.
https://www.etp.ca.gov/citrix ( https://www.etp.ca.gov/citrix ))? Or
should I go with a VPN there also, and have them connect as they do
normally, through a shortcut on the desktop?

We don’t have Secure Gateway, and I don’t think we’re going to purchase
it for a handful of people, so that is not an option.

The VPN would be using my Watchguard x750 firewall’s built-in mobile
client VPN feature.

Any suggestions/tips/advice is appreciated, as I need to come up with a
good, secure, viable solution soon.

Thanks,

Joe Heaton

Home Directories and VPN

2008-08-07 Thread Jeremy

The home folder is not showing up in My computer and the user can not access

How can I get the home folder to stay mapped after a reboot so that users can
access it outside the office on a VPN?

You appear to be right, just tried it and no joy.

This is a real pain in the backside for me and is going to be one of those
ways that end-users end up with administrative rights - in this case, not on
their local machines, but on a terminal server. Unfortunately I can't see
any way around it other than writing some sort of custom admin wrapper
that lets a program execute like RunAs but without allowing any access to
the password.

If anyone else has any ideas or tips I'd be glad to hear them :-)

Is there any way to update a Windows user's access token without logging

administrator rights to run successfully, but my users will receive a
different desktop (i.e. without any of their applications) if they have to
log out and back in when they are given elevated rights. My research seems
to indicate that the answer to this is a resounding no, but I am hoping

We do have the PnAgent available, and that's what I've recently moved my
internal users over to, for their apps. With the web interface, you use
an SSL cert for security, correct? What exactly are you publishing for
those users? You mention that they are able to access their files
through web interface, do you mean like accessing their My Documents, or
network shares, or?

I like the VPN because that pretty much eliminates the need to publish a
desktop, as they would have access through the VPN tunnel to normal
network stuff, as if they were sitting at their desk.

I have some luck in creating a service (that interacts with the desktop)
for programs that need to run under administrator level access. I used
this for my technicians who needed Agilent IO Libraries which connects
to Agilent test instrumentation. If needed, you could have a script on
the desktop that starts and stops the service so they can open and close
the app when they want. Look for KB137890 for directions.

Unfortunately I can't see any way around it other than writing some sort
of custom admin wrapper that lets a program execute like RunAs but
without allowing any access to the password.

If anyone else has any ideas or tips I'd be glad to hear them :-)

Having said that, if a user is already a member of a group, if

You have it right, there were both apples and oranges in the discussion, and
DSMOD USER applies to the apples but not the oranges. You figured out the

ADModify also applies to the apples problem, gives a nice GUI to mass modify
almost anything in AD user accounts.

Boot scans are *mostly* a waste of time as modern malware in the form of
rootkit-enabled threats will hide from several Windows API functions,
rendering signature-searching scans useless. So, unless your A/V has
its own fast disk reading routines, you have a problem.

It also gets worse:

In case of wrapping:

Like many modern applications, NOD32 will use all available resources
if/when it needs to - without interfering with other applications.

The system does not get pegged or become unresponsive.

RE: Evaluating AV

2008-08-07 Thread David Lum
Some things don't take effect until the machine is restarted...so why not a
virus?

I have some systems configured to run a full scan - every file type,
everywhere, incl. recycle bin and .zip files many levels deep - upon startup.
However, these same systems power themselves up at 5:00am and the users don't
get in until 8:00am or later. By then the system has completely scanned itself
and applied any Windows Updates and rebooted. Does it do any good? Dunno, but I
feel better knowing every nook and cranny has been searched...

Maintenance off-hours is a beautiful thing!

RE: Anywhere USB

2008-08-07 Thread Steve Kelsay
We have one we evaluated, but it did not work very well for what we
needed it to do. They said they would have a product that would work for
us in about a year though. We wanted to be able to switch from machine
to machine for test and production, but the darned thing will only
support one virtual machine at a time, though you can switch the
machines by software, it still had to be switched manually. One dongle,
one virtual machine. We needed to have a multiple license dongle plug
into a single port and support multiple machines.

I don't use the USB product but I have the Serial over IP one and it
rocks, Over the past month We've virtualized a bunch of servers and
modems with this and it worked pretty well, It's based on the same real
port tech as the USB one so I'd be pretty confident with it. We tried a
couple of other companies and their products weren't great. We also have
2 Serial auth tokens connected to it and it works well. Across VLAN'S
and thru ACL lists

Yes they made sure I understood that when I talked with them earlier.
Which is fine for me I have 3-5 dongles I could consolidate to a single
guest os for licensing. More than that and you start running in to
conflicts if different dongles need different versions of the same
Rainbow app or something. They do have a Ethernet attached serial unit
that also has one parallel port.

Anyone using this (or something similar) to support security dongles so

Do you have the clients pointed to your SCE server for updates? We usually hear
about this when someone installs SCE into an environment where there are GPOs
pointing the clients to a different WSUS box. You have to remove those GPOs
before you will get true monitoring out of SCE.

Yeah I killed the GPO's that regulate that this morning. The servers seemed
to respond to it but not the clients. I really did not want to have this
SCE server handing out updates to clients as they are patched correctly
now. I also just turned on File Sharing on one client and rebooted 2x and I
can still only get health monitoring data. I am still also getting the Not
Yet Contacted under Computers. Things are better but it is a bit
frustrating setting up the demo to prove it will do the job. I wished there
was just one place that would tell you, in the correct order what to do to
get it running. I have seen something like 5 differnet places bits and
pieces of information. I got a lot further with the jewal Candee gave me.
Most of the Warnings disappeared when I turned on File Sharing.

Those port exceptions should be a part of your SCE GPOs, but you have to make
sure that A) Your clients have permissions to access those GPOs, B) There
aren't other GPOs overriding the settings of the 2 SCE GPOs.
Option B is a very common cause of issues with SCE, option A not so much, but
still good to be aware of.

PS - A SCE book is in the works.

Also, be aware that SCE only does a sync on a regular schedule (12 hours by
default I believe, although it can be altered via XML) between the WSUS DB and
the SCE DB. If you just turned off your old WSUS GPOs today, it could very
possibly be tonight or tomorrow morning before you see the full results of that
change.

Yeah I killed the GPO's that regulate that this morning. The servers seemed to
respond to it but not the clients. I really did not want to have this SCE
server handing out updates to clients as they are patched correctly now. I
also just turned on File Sharing on one client and rebooted 2x and I can still
only get health monitoring data. I am still also getting the Not Yet Contacted
under Computers. Things are better but it is a bit frustrating setting up the
demo to prove it will do the job. I wished there was just one place that would
tell you, in the correct order what to do to get it running. I have seen
something like 5 differnet places bits and pieces of information. I got a lot
further with the jewal Candee gave me. Most of the Warnings disappeared when I
turned on File Sharing.

Some things don't take effect until the machine is restarted...so why
not a virus?

I have some systems configured to run a full scan - every file type,
everywhere, incl. recycle bin and .zip files many levels deep - upon
startup. However, these same systems power themselves up at 5:00am and
the users don't get in until 8:00am or later. By then the system has
completely scanned itself and applied any Windows Updates and rebooted.
Does it do any good? Dunno, but I feel better knowing every nook and
cranny has been searched...

Maintenance off-hours is a beautiful thing!

RE: Home Directories and VPN

The other suggestions about starting the VPN before login are good. Sometimes
that's not always practical, though. So what I've done is to provide a copy of
the login script, or at least the drive mapping part, as a .bat file on the
desktop. If they're working offline and realize they need to connect, they can
make the connection, run the batch file, and have their drives mapped.

RAID rebuild during power outage?

2008-08-07 Thread David Mazzaccaro
I have a server w/ a failed HD in a RAID 5.
I was planning on swapping out the HD w/ a replacement tonight.
This is a large array (1TB) and given the chance of power outage during
the rebuild, is this not a good idea?
Our UPS systems will keep the server running for no more than 1 hour;
after which time I would shut the server down.
What happens if the RAID starts to rebuild, but then I have to power off
the server before it completes?
Will the RAID continue to rebuild when I power the server back up again?
Thanks

This could depend on a number of issues. Are they simple .ocx or .dll
files, or are they tied to specific registry keys for licensing
purposes. Are they machine ActiveX or Broswer ActiveX objects?

If it is a simple, stand alone file, then yes, you could back up the
file, and restore it to another machine, but you would need to
re-register it when installed on the new machine.

I had a customer with some Infragistics software, and it was near
impossible to backup the software from one machine, and restore it to
another, without the original installation key and media.

Modify ISO

2008-08-07 Thread Jim Dandy
I'd like to add some files to a WinPE .iso. I thought an easy way to do
that might be to mount the .iso as a drive and copy files to it. Can
.isos be mounted in write mode? If so, what software can I use for
this? Is there some other approach that will work? Thanks for your
help.

Yea, you can edit the iso (ISOEdit, WinISO for example), but that won't get you
anywhere w/ Pe 2.0 :)
You don't see the part of the ISO you will be editing once booted.

Read the Vista WDS Deployment Guide, if you cant find what you need ping back
and tomorrow when I am at the dungeon I will find what you need.

I won't be deploying anything. I just want to create a bootable CD with
my command line antivirus scanning tool on it. Do I still need to use
WDS?

RE: Modify ISO

2008-08-07 Thread Joseph L. Casale
Ok, I wasn't clear.
The WDS Deployment kit has the tools to create an iso.

1. Create a mount directory
2. Mount the wim (rw) you will use (read deployment guide)
3. Add in stuff you want
4. unmount and commit wim
5. build new iso
6. Boot and enjoy

Why do all this silly work? The iso you *would* edit isn't what you see when
you boot that cd. Because of the bootloader on it, you mount the wim file in
it, which looks like a windows install...
You can't see the iso as you expect from inside the session.

You don't use WDS for anything, other then its toolkit.

Cool?

OT: Personal laptop - home backup?

2008-08-07 Thread Ara Avvali
Hello everyone,

What do you use if you have the following scenario?

There is only a single dell laptop which is always connected with
wireless at home. So we want to take backups. What device do you use for
this? I tested apple time capsule and their airport extreme with an
external usb disk attached. Biggest issue is to keep it compatible
between mc and windows it only supports FAT32

Any better solutions? Gotta be something supports NTFS. Wireless has to
be in N mode to get a decent speed. Basically one full backup on
weekends and incremental hourly.

Basically I am trying to do what apple does with time machine and time
capsule under vista

Thank you
