Hello! Why not? I have used Google tranlator as a word book. Translation to Finnish is not nice languge but words are mostly OK. So I find normally more easy to write whole sentence manually than try to fix proposals. In some other languges structure is more like in English and I suppose threre is more to win for example on documentation. In future computer translations are better than today. Hi, I assume that you have updated to AOO 3.4 on Windows. Right? If yes, I have to admit that an activated Quickstarter causes this behavior. Thus, if you deactivate the AOO Quickstarter the problem should be solved. In AOO 3.4.1 we have fixed this erroneous behavior of the Quickstarter. Hi all, There is an old bug i65221( https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=65221). It is about interoperability with Excel for SUMIF, COUNTIF, COUNTBLANK, DCOUNT, DSUM, ... with empty cells and and = empty string criteria. There is some discussion about it, but no conclusion. Some people think Excel does not do well, so simply mimicking Excel behavior might not be the best idea. Some people think self-consistency in Calc is more important. Some people think compatibility with Excel is a huge concern. IMHO, compatible with Excel is very important. I suggest changing these formulas behavior according to Excel. Following is my consideration 1)Most people use Excel, compatible with Excel is very important. Excel does not show self-consistency in some scenarios, Calc doe not show self-consistency either. 2)Some frequently used function, such as calculating empty cells, can not be implemented by Calc, while Excel can. 3)Although Excel does not show self-consistency in some scenarios. These scenarios are all related with pure empty cell. Excel use following rules When empty cell is criteria, only cells with value 0 meet it. This is true for COUNTIF, SUMIF. But not true for DSUM/DCOUNT/IF. When an empty cell in a cell range, it can meet empty string criteria. This is true for COUNTIF, SUMIF. But not true for DSUM/DCOUNT.

So this is getting interesting. In itself this would be an interesting idea, but I wouldn't adopt it since it has high chances of backfiring. Machine-quality translations are widely regarded as an indicator of scam e-mails/sites and we definitely don't want that users suspect that the official site is just yet another more or less legitimate site offering OpenOffice for download. So this approach would probably scare more users away than those it can attract by crowdsourcing the site localization. Regards, Andrea.

In a further step, we considered that AOO has fidelity issues on representing such kind of MS Word document with the properties settings we talked about, and we want to fix it. So far so good. But what should be the range of the fix? In my opinion, we should consider following candidates: a. Preventing the text presentation clipping in first line in above condition, as ZJ already done perfectly; b. Consistency behavior of paint refresh and cursor selection; The hard point of this one is that, when refreshing a line portion painting (including the selection range stuff), the paint range is clipped already to fit the size of line portion. We may need some kind of breaking method on working with big line spacing. Such method may need to change the VisArea of a SwTxtFrm; c. Following the in-consistent process mechanism that MS Word has; I really do not want it, but without it, the fidelity issues still there. d. Making the documents loaded from ODF files also work like this; So for me, ZuoJun's work maybe acceptable, but it is only a very beginning of big works. I agree to ZhengFan's analysis. Now, we need to discuss how we address these issues. My view one this is the following (propsal for discussion): - Let us separate the stuff regarding the character painting and the object positioning stuff in two issue. 119476 for the character painting, new issue for the object positioning stuff. - Character painting stuff: -- I am in favor of a solution which does not change our intrinsic text formatting and line portion creation algorithm. Thus, to solve the repaint and selection problem we can store additional information - the additional space taken by the character painting - at the SwTxtFrm instance in order to access it during painting and selection actions. The additional space taken for the character painting is already part of the frame area (member SwTxtFrm::aFrm), but not part of the frame printing area (member SwTxtFrm::aPrt). 1 Concern: Could such additional information to be available in ODF Standard? If not, whether it means that, the conversion from MS-Word Doc to ODT lead different representation result? I do not think that this is an ODF issue. The ODF specification does not say anything about the need to clip the text, if it does not fit into the given/calculated line height. Hi, Oliver: So what will happen, if we give the support on such clipping stuff in MS Word for the issue we discussed, and then save the document into an ODT file? From my point of view the discussed changes are rendering/painting related - they are not related to the document model and attributes. In the case that there needs to be further clarification in OpenFormula, comments can be submitted to the ODF TC for Errata and/or improvements in the next edition, ODF 1.3. OpenFormula was developed with cross-format interoperability in mind and Microsoft participation was helpful for that. And if the translated page is helpful then the download numbers would be higher. You could imagine other success indicators. Pretty much anything that has a URL can be measured. For example, imagine we add a link, This page solved my problem to the bottom of every documentation page. Even though the link would just go to a thanks page, we could use that action to measure the success of translated versus untranslated pages. Of course, we don't need to do this all at once. But I'd recommend we think of ways of quantifying success. The website serves our users. How do we know what is working well and what isn't? How can we design experiments to test alternative approaches? Possible successes for users might be: - downloaded AOO - found answer to their question - signed up for our announcement list - entered their first bug report - signed up for one of the project lists - make first wiki contribution - followed/liked/+1'ed us on one of our social networking sites Measure, improve, repeat. Constant improvement and optimization. We can debate what will improve the website for the users. Or we can test and measure. Even though the link would just go to a thanks page, we could use that action to measure the success of translated versus untranslated pages. Of course, we don't need to do this all at once. But I'd recommend we think of ways of quantifying success. The website serves our users. How do we know what is working well and what isn't? How can we design experiments to test alternative approaches? Possible successes for users might be: - downloaded AOO - found answer to their question - signed up for our announcement list - entered their first bug report - signed up for one of the project lists - make first wiki contribution - followed/liked/+1'ed us on one of our social networking sites Measure, improve, repeat. Constant improvement and optimization. We can debate what will improve the website for the users. Or we can test and measure. Sorry for the top post. I like where this is going. A lot of interesting ideas. I have one major concern. How do we manage the human created content as people replace and/or edit the translations. What happens when the original English (or French) page is changed? To me we are really discussing managing Markdown text. If the names of files are like: index.mdtext index.en-GB.mdtext index.fr.mdtext We'll have some type of Apache CMS magic that can handle translated SSI elements. I need to write Joe / infra-dev an email... Then if we can tie together the CMS to take translations and somehow inform either or both the human and/or the tool translators when changes occur in other languages ... svn diff can be used... assuming that... With markdown it will be easy to have a header parameter that will signal the inclusion of an SSI detailing the machine translated page vs. human translation situation. By making it an SSI and translatable it can become something different language groups can handle in an organic way. We'll have an objective measure of the engagement of different language communities based on the the number of edits, number of translators and how up to date and/or responsive they are. I think we could start by creating a test-auto.mdtext file, and using the translate.google to convert it to 100 pages. Put the scripts in the ooo-site/trunk/tools/ directory. There is very little Markdown in use outside of the Podling project pages. In any case, it should be possible to use Pootle for this, just as we manage changing product strings and updating those. Nice medal. I notice a couple of things. Their OpenOffice page features OO.o 3.3.0. They do link to sv.openoffice.org (landing at www.openoffice.org/sv/) though. That Swedish page of ours is out of date -- the latest news, apart from the 3.4.0 banner at the top, is on the release of 3.1. The page also doesn't automatically translate with Bing Translate, which I find interesting as well. I was able to coax it but there are whole paragraphs not translated. I didn't try pasting into Google translate. I have some concerns. First, the meta-requirements Wiki page was last updated on 2012-03-12 and there has been on-going turmoil at the ODF TC on which of three proposals will be refined into an ODF 1.3 improvement. There is no resolution, although there is some major discussion to occur in the ODF TC Conference calls in the next few weeks. Because of this, it is important to understand how your proposed Track Changes Improvement will be reflect in the ODF 1.2 documents consumed and produced by Apache OpenOffice at this time. That is, what needs to be done in the format, if anything, and how is interoperable communication of that handled in the persistent document? Also, do the proposed improvements favor one of the three proposals or borrow some elements from each? Is it a completely separate improvement to the existing ODF 1.2 provisions (as badly-specified as they might be)? Is it designed toward interoperability with the functionality of Microsoft Word documents and convertibility with .doc or OOXML Word Processing (.docx, basically)? We should really concentrate more on the subject and content of a thread and should honor the work others are doing or trying to drive forward... If people prefer to filter some people based on whatever reason it is their own decision but they can't complain about it later on. This is of course no fun, it is destructive and demotivating. If somebody wants to complain about the communication style (Rob's, Dave's or even my own) please start a new thread and I will join the discussion (maybe).
