[DISCUSS] Code of Conduct

2012-09-10 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi,

We have a code of conduct here:
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/list-conduct.html

These are the community's code and we should all agree to abide by the code.
Maybe there is some more work to do exposing the code. Maybe the code needs to
be modified.

Graduation requires the project to be self-governing. What do people think? I
think we should discuss a few topics.

(1) What are the consequences of breaking the code of conduct?

- Loss of merit in the community including the possibility of losing any karma
in the project. Karma is the ability to make commits.

- Banning from the list. Moderators will need to treat offenders like spammers.

(2) Who is responsible for enforcing the code?

- it should be enforced by anyone who sees it happening. In most cases a
reminder will be enough.

- what if they won't stop? who is next? If the PPMC is working it should be
noticed, but if not then probably a note to ooo-private.

(3) How do we expose the code?

- we have unsubscribe links on ooo-users, we could add a link to the policy.

(4) Should we update the code?

- the code should be edited to include the information decided for (1) and (2)

- anything else?

Please feel free to elaborate.

Let's leave this open for a week to discuss. No need to hurry.

Regards,
Dave

2012-09-10 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi,

Dennis is handling transitions on ooo-private. I'm traveling tomorrow and will
put together a final list and write the JIRA issue for Apache Infra.

If you are a project committer we will use your apache-id, if not then so far
we have your email and will use that.

More volunteer moderators are welcome. Dennis has good email threads about
moderation duties.

We definitely could use another moderator for ooo-users-fr.

This is a good idea. Time zones help.

Changing the moderator list in the site can proceed once we finalize the
changes. If anyone think we should delay changes past the 24 hours please say
so.

Rob already has set up a page on the project incubator site:
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/ppmc-faqs.html#mailing-lists

This is very out of date.

It makes more sense to me on this page:

I think the geometry difference between AOO and MS can be taken as a
feature gap. And the fill difference is the result of the feature gap when
import/export.

I have updated the wiki page:

This page has a link to a 3.0.0.beta file you can download for convenience.

I have tagged the 3.0.0.beta in SVN

Due to the nbm file containing jars from the Netbeans distribution that

out this from SVN and building in Netbeans and installing the plugin to

I hope this helps.

That is a great point. That can be done with our lists, too.

The only ones I reported, with considerable difficulty, were Linked In

When moderating a couple of OO.o lists in their dying days, I took a
more aggressive approach to spammers. If they were sending from any of
the large U.S. ISPs (MS, Google, Yahoo, ATT, et al.) I would follow the
complaint procedure to try to get the account closed. (This is a little
different for the different companies: MS wants attachments, while
others want pasted parts of the offending email.) MS in particular is
polite about it; I'd get a note saying that the account has been closed.
Others say thanks, but cite privacy regs, which I consider bogus;
nonetheless, I don't recall ever getting any more spam from a
complained-about account, if the ISP acked the complaint.

Note that this requires careful analysis of the internal headers: the
main address is often munged, and you need to go way down to the last
"received from" header. I have a little list of useful URLs to look up
IP owners and ISP complaint addresses, if anybody wants it.

One real success was with a number of spammers from a .edu address. The
admin I wrote to replied politely that the situation would be handled,
and it was: their spam vanished.

This kind of work takes some time, but it makes the Net better for

Re: Moderating AOO Public Lists - #2 Moderation

2012-09-10 Thread TJ Frazier

On 9/10/2012 16:36, Dennis E. Hamilton wrote:

[Part 2 of tips for list moderators]

MODERATION [AND PRIVATE-LIST SUBSCRIPTION] REQUESTS ARE SENT TO ALL MODERATORS

Since the request is sent as an e-mail, each moderator receives the same
request.

The first moderation wins. You'll receive a notice if your moderation arrives
when another moderator's action has already been taken. That doesn't happen
very often.

The moderation request has the message being moderated as an attachment. Be
careful with it.

I will cover only moderation requests here. Subscription requests for private
lists are rather tricky.

1. SPAM DROPPING

If the message is clearly spam, IGNORE IT. Using the moderation-request
rejection option will send a message back to the original sender. That is
undesirable. It confirms to spammers that they've reached a working e-mail
address. Don't do that.

2. OFF-PURPOSE MESSAGES

As a moderator, I don't make it my job to handle messages that appear
legitimate but are sent to the wrong list. List subscribers can do that. And
if this is happening too much, it suggests that something needs to be done to
help submitters find the correct place more easily.

What I do is moderate the message onto the list. I have rarely used the reject
option, and only when I am confident the e-mail is from a legitimate sender.

There are two basic ways to moderate a message onto the list.

  1. The message can be accepted in accordance with the instructions in the
moderation-request e-mail. That is a one-time acceptance.

  2. Another way is to accept that message and all future messages to the list
from that sender.

The way to accept all messages from the sender is to make a REPLY ALL to the moderation-request
message. That is, your reply to the request is addressed to both the accept and the reject
addresses. (This solution is not always listed in the -help message. It works though.) You will
have to delete the "non-disclosed-recipients" e-mail address if that appears in your
"Reply All" message.

  3. An alternative is to send a rejection with explanation. That is probably
not great. The messages from the robot are lengthy and cryptic. It may be
difficult for the original sender.

  4. Finally, you can reply to the attachment and be helpful directly. I've done
that. I don't make a practice of it. It moves response and awareness of the kinds
of questions from the list to the moderator. If you *do* do this, it is wise to copy
-owner@ so that other moderators will know what happened. It is also
good to check the list to verify that some other moderator did not already allow the
message through.

3. ON-PURPOSE MESSAGES

I recommend the second moderation-in technique for these. This can also happen
when a list subscriber uses a different e-mail than the one they have
subscribed to the list.

Hi, Dave,

I remember your previous posts on this, and your help will be very
welcome. I am totally ignorant of the underlying code, so as a BZ admin
I stick to the little day-to-day stuff: adding privileges or deleting
too-personal attachments. Others are of course welcome to do those,
too;
if I don't "know" somebody from the list, I generally wait three days
(lazy consensus) and add privileges if nobody objects.

Some of the larger things which have been done by others (including
Rob)
involve adding fields or groups, and adding values to field lists (e.g.
"3.4.1" to the version options).

If you are not already an admin, let me know your BZ id.

Never mind, found it. Welcome to BZ admin. --/tj/

Great, thank you. I'm on vacation right now and away from home, so my
access to email and the net are sporadic. Thanks for the inclusion to
BZ Admin.

I just checked and I do indeed have admin rights. Is there a list
somewhere of things that need doing, or do they arrive in an ad-hoc
fashion? And is there a list of the BZ admins so we all know who the
others are?

Dave.

Things-to-do have been just trickling in, at a low rate, maybe 1 per week. Last
week was really busy: 4 requests! :-) If the volume picks up, we might discuss
some more formal list arrangement.

So requests are just emailed in to one of the lists? I can monitor those.

Dave.

Note that there is a BZ admin area in our Bugzilla. Admin-related
requests can be entered there, though I was probably the only one who
did this regularly. But the workflow tracking might be useful.

OK, thanks. I'll take a look at it.

Dave.

For BZ admins, won't BZ give us a group-membership list? Haven't looked.

Note that there is a BZ admin area in our Bugzilla. Admin-related
requests can be entered there, though I was probably the only one who
did this regularly. But the workflow tracking might be useful.

Hi, Dave,

I remember your previous posts on this, and your help will be very
welcome. I am totally ignorant of the underlying code, so as a BZ admin
I stick to the little day-to-day stuff: adding privileges or deleting
too-personal attachments. Others are of course welcome to do those,
too;
if I don't "know" somebody from the list, I generally wait three days
(lazy consensus) and add privileges if nobody objects.

Some of the larger things which have been done by others (including
Rob)
involve adding fields or groups, and adding values to field lists (e.g.
"3.4.1" to the version options).

If you are not already an admin, let me know your BZ id.

Great, thank you. I'm on vacation right now and away from home, so my

I just checked and I do indeed have admin rights. Is there a list

Things-to-do have been just trickling in, at a low rate, maybe 1 per

Moderating AOO Public Lists - #2 Moderation

2012-09-10 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton

The way to accept all messages from the sender is to make a REPLY ALL to the
moderation-request message. That is, your reply to the request is addressed to
both the accept and the reject addresses. (This solution is not always listed
in the -help message. It works though.) You will have to delete the
"non-disclosed-recipients" e-mail address if that appears in your "Reply All"
message.

 3. An alternative is to send a rejection with explanation. That is probably
not great. The messages from the robot are lengthy and cryptic. It may be
difficult for the original sender.

 4. Finally, you can reply to the attachment and be helpful directly. I've
done that. I don't make a practice of it. It moves response and awareness of
the kinds of questions from the list to the moderator. If you *do* do this, it
is wise to copy -owner@ so that other moderators will know what
happened. It is also good to check the list to verify that some other
moderator did not already allow the message through.

3. ON-PURPOSE MESSAGES

I recommend the second moderation-in technique for these. This can also happen
when a list subscriber uses a different e-mail than the one they have
subscribed to the list.

Moderating AOO Public Lists - #1 Setting Up

2012-09-10 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
[To support current interest in lists and their moderation, I've compiled some
tips on what to expect and how to operate as a moderator. The version for
private lists has been well-received. I am now posting this public-list
version for information and wider review.]

Here are some tips for starting as a moderator on any Apache OpenOffice public
lists. This may be old news for current moderators. I am providing it for the
benefit of newcomers and the curious. After any improvements that are
suggested, I'll consolidate these in a place where they can be found for future
reference.

1. MODERATOR WORKLOAD

The mailing list moderation system is e-mail driven. The needs for moderation
arrive in the moderators in-box as messages from the list robot. Moderators
may also receive messages that are directed to them via the list's owner
address (i.e., -owner@ incubator.apache.org).

It is not necessary to read the lists often or in their entirety. It is useful
to keep an eye on lists to ensure there is not some technical issue to report.
Participating on the list is not a requirement for moderation. Being a
moderator does not even subscribe you to the list, although moderators of
private lists certainly need to be subscribed to those lists.

There are only two kinds of moderator mails from the list robot: requests for
approval of posts from non-subscribers and subscription requests (only for
private lists). On public lists, subscription does not require any moderator
action and none is requested by the list robot.

2. MODERATOR E-MAIL ADDRESSES

When starting as a moderator, it is important to choose an e-mail address where
you will receive moderator-directed mail. It works best if this is an e-mail
address that you can also use to send e-mail from. If you use an e-mail
address that is handled by a forwarding service, it is desirable for you to be
able to send e-mail from an account of yours that allows that e-mail in the
"From:" entry.

For ASF Committers, the ideal e-mail address is the Apache Account Name/ID
address, @ apache.org.

When a moderator e-mail is to be added, removed, or changed, the procedure is
the same:

 * Open a JIRA task ticket on the Infrastructure project, with component
"Mailing Lists." This is usually done by a PPMC Member using
.

 * Request any e-mail addresses to be removed (and at whose request/authority,
if they are not yours).

 * Request any e-mail addresses to be added.

 * TIP: To make this easier in managing your own address in the future, use an
e-mail of a forwarding service where you can update the forwarding yourself
without changing the e-mail address used by the mailing-list robot. You can
use the first step (below) to confirm that the forwarded e-mail address is
recognized properly.

The JIRA tickets are usually acted-upon within 24 hours.

 3. THE FIRST STEP

The first new-moderator action is to send an e-mail to

   -help@ incubator.apache.org

Send that e-mail from an account that has your moderator-listed e-mail as its
From: address. (If there is no such account for sending, but you can receive
at your moderator e-mail, use a sending e-mail account that allows you to
specify a different From: address.)

When the e-mail robot recognizes that the request is from a moderator e-mail,
it will send a moderator version of the list help message. The subject will be
"Moderator help for @ incubator.apache.org".

Save that e-mail.

Remember how easy it is to do that again when needed.

 3. IF THIS DOESN'T WORK, send a note to the existing moderators at
-owner@, and we'll see how to sort it out. If there is no response
within one day, communicate with one of the existing moderators to work with
you in resolving the difficulty.

I think we can finalize the future directory structure #part 2 on the

Current proposal:

.../ooo//bin/SDK/

When I remember there were some concerns regarding "bin". And I would

Hm, I don't know if it makes really a difference in case of names on

keep the project name open or flexible assuming a change in favor of "aoo".

...///source/
...///binaries//
...///binaries/SDK/

Where PROJECT_NAME is something like "ooo" or "aoo" or "openoffice". I
would say we need no voting for this and need further discussion only if
somebody see some problems with the new proposed structure.

So, waiting for the final definition. For the moment I'll use "aoo" for
my testing.

It remains the problem, that the corresponding shape in PowerPoint has
different kind of filling than the shape in AOO.

Perhaps it is possible to generate a new shape during import without
adding it to any toolbox? In that way the shape would look the same as
in MS Office documents. And such generic import would give other still
missing shapes too.

AOO can handle arbitrary custom shapes in ODF format. They do not need
to be in the predefined collection. But I don't know, whether MS Office
has this ability too. Therefore a round trip might be problematic.

There is already artwork in the gallery so adding a few more is not
likely to have any significant impact on download bandwidth,
especially if the right images are chosen. Ordinary end-users expect
to see it and will be given more confidence by seeing stuff in the
gallery rather than a lot of void.

Yes, make it easy for the most inexperienced user. Remember most
people have never even heard of OpenClipArt and most would not know
what to do with an extension.

Another good point. Finding this with searches is one thing
transferring them to the gallery is another.

+1. The main issue is that end users expect clipart with their office
software and they don't expect to have to start configuring stuff to
get it.

Sorry that my post was too short. Let me explain the ideal scenario in my
mind:

1. When I installed a clean AOO, I hope to have 10~20 most frequent used
build-in cliparts in local repository from AOO installation package.
2. But from time to time, I may want to look for more cliparts. So I hope
to have a button like "Search more cliparts on XXX". (XXX maybe any website
that provide clipart library, e.g. Open Clipart, Google, Baidu...)
3. I clicked on the button and searched the clipart I want. (Remember
different site may categorize their cliparts in different way.)
4. I insert the clipart I searched out to my document.
5. I like the searched out clipart very much and believe I will use it
frequently. So I stored this clipart to my local repository.
6. I get notified for new/hot cliparts.

With the scenario above:
1. should be provided by AOO.
2, 3 & 6 should be provided by an extension specific to a clipart site that
I installed later. If I want the capability to search in multiple sites, I
may need to install multiple extensions. (Or any better suggestion?)
4 & 5, should be from the extension, but AOO should provide interface for
good user experience (e.g. the capability to add a clipart to local
repository with a drag&drop).

Re: Clipart library

2012-09-10 Thread Joost Andrae

Hi,

just to shorten this thread: There is already a possibility to add
clipart to AOO by using the extension mechanism. Just have a look at the
extensions page and search for clipart:

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org

I think we probably don't want bundle it with AOO directly. I can think
of an extended gallery implementation where it is possible to hook
online galleries as well.

Bundling clipart unnecessarily enlarges the download. Additionally
clipart bundles need to be proof checked against content that might be
politically incorrect based on local laws. Just remember that symbols of
the german WW2 regime are not allowed to be used in Germany. Clipart
collections containing flags _must_ include the officially used flags
containing no design changes. In Germany eg. it is fined by monetary
penalty or by prison sentence of max. 3 years (StGB §90a) if someone
denounces the colours, the flag, the emblem or the anthem of Germany. I
believe similar laws do exist in other countries as well.

+1 (for Clipart as well as Template). AOO should provide a kind of
capability (with extensions) to easily search or browse the online
resources. It is another perspective of Cloud/Social Integration value.

Why do you think it is a good idea to integrate cloud services or social
media into AOO ? I'm not convinced at all. People should decide
themselves which services they want to have added to AOO. And there are
already several cloud based service providers that provide extensions
for AOO (like teamdrive.com). Using extensions for such service
integrations is an appropriate way.

- Simon

Ok in case of OpenClipart it raises the question how it should be
organized/presented to our users. But allowing access to the online
resources will guarantee that we are up-to-date.

The extension framework should be able to guarantee that an extension is
up-to-date, you know...

Kind regards, Joost

There is working alpha version linked to there.

I have a newer version I can update this evening US EST.

I'll post back on this thread when I've uploaded it.

After I've uploaded it. I thought I would tag it v3.0.0 What is the procedure

there is a good start so anyone could refine it to their particular

I would keep the name until the work is finished and then we have to
review how we can make a release out of it. There is probably more work
to do to check the dependencies etc.

We have to provide a source release and can provide the binary only for
convenience.

I haven't thought in detailed about a release of the plugin yet. No time
so far. But the requirements are documented and we should discuss
potential questions here on the list.

Good. I'd use "openoffice" as project name, for clarity. It's longer
than alternatives but we already got rid of "localized", "stable" and so on.

I think we can finalize the future directory structure #part 2 on the
wiki page.

Current proposal:
.../ooo//source/
.../ooo//bin//
.../ooo//bin/SDK/

When I remember there were some concerns regarding "bin". And I would
keep the project name open or flexible assuming a change in favor of "aoo".

...///source/
...///binaries//
...///binaries/SDK/

Where PROJECT_NAME is something like "ooo" or "aoo" or "openoffice". I
would say we need no voting for this and need further discussion only if
somebody see some problems with the new proposed structure.

level attribute of Numbering Enhancement feature.

I need a UI to link a numbering level of a list style to a paragraph style.
I want add a list box control into the "Options" tab page of the

The steps to open this tab page are:

1. New a writer document.
2. press F11 open the "Style and Formatting" dialog.
3. choose the "list style" tab page
4. open context menu by left click on the tab page, select "new..." menu
item

[user documentation] Requirements for a documentation project

2012-09-10 Thread Guy Waterval
Hi all,

As I have more free time until June 2013, I plan to continue writing a user
documentation for OOoLight (Educoo.org). As the two products AOO et
OOoLight are, from an end user point of view of course, relatively similar
to use, my goal is to try to interfacing properly with the AOO project, to
allow an easy reuse of some parts by people here who could be interested to
create a specific AOO documentation project.
So, I will work with the Alv2 licence and I have signed the CLA in june. Is
it enough or are there more requirements?

I don't think that Java would prevent us from including an extension in
the office.

I think it's more the general question what we want include and what
not? Do we have control over the source code or not? I think we should
keep it minimal and allows users to decide themselves.

Especially when we don't have control over the source code. The license
in this case is a further problem and we can easy avoid it by simply not
bundling it by default.

But as Andrea pointed out we can think about ways how we can help users
to find useful enhancements for the office that are available as
extension or on another way.
