RE: How to listen BBC 5live and 5live sports extra outside UK
Witopia is by far your best bet. Extremely solid and reliable service, and it works every time. Before the OCR in JAWS 13, I had problems installing it independently so you may need sighted assistance to get it installed. After that it is a snap to use. RE: Choosing Laptop for Internet Radio Broadcasting
Hi Danny, it's certainly possible, I do the Mosen Explosion on Mushroom FM every week this way. I use a tiny Toshiba Portige R600, there are newer replacement models now, I think the R800 may be out. My wife has a compatible laptop, so in the studio, we have a docking station/port replicator. Connected to that is the hard drive containing all the music and other elements, and the external sound card, an Edirol UA1-EX. We also use an external keyboard. The Edirol sound card goes in and out of the broadcast console. It's a pretty no frills kind of card, but it was easy to set up and it sounds great. I suspect that too, will have been superseded by a newer model by now. That said, you can use StationPlaylist Studio on a laptop with a good quality USB microphone, and Studio's own audio pipeline. that is a much simpler set-up, and can still give good results. So really the key thing is to determine whether you want a hardware mixer in the picture or not. In most cases, with a good microphone, there may not be a need for one anymore and I have successfully broadcast via WiFi or 3G from all sorts of locations. This is an additional advantage of having everything on a laptop. You can take it with you and broadcast from cool places. Jonathan -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Danny Miles Sent: Monday, 7 November 2011 4:20 p.m. To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Choosing Laptop for Internet Radio Broadcasting Hi everyone. I know that this is a very generalised question and that people like to please their own preferences, but any general advice on what to consider or specific recommendations of appropriate machines would be gratefully received. Basically, I'm looking to do some internet radio broadcasting, and I believe that my current laptop is presenting issues with my output (the music broadcasts fine, but vocal broadcasting comes out in very poor quality, even though using exactly the same microphone and soundcard set-up sounds fine in GoldWave). I presume that I need a certain level of RAM and speed of processor, and that there may even be other issues to consider. I have no experience of Apple products, so would be most comfortable with a Windows XP product if a suitable one is still produced or likely to be available secondhand. Likewise, I'd much rather use a laptop as this would satisfy my other needs and enable me to broadcast from places other than my home, but even clarification of whether it is feasible/realistic to do internet broadcasting with a laptop rather than a PC would be very helpful. Many thanks in advance for any help, Danny To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

If I understand your question correctly, you're asking about sound quality? Internet Radio on Mobile Devices
Hi everyone, Mushroom FM is a fairly new Internet radio station that I run. Already though, we're getting a great response, with over 3000 unique listeners having tuned in from 127 countries in the last month. We've had lots of inquiries about how to listen to Mushroom FM, which uses Shout cast technology, with various mobile devices, so we've put together a guide on how it's done. I hope you'll listen to Mushroom FM while you're over there, but even if you don't, this could help with the stations you listen to. Audio tutorial on Internet Broadcasting Now Available
It's been asked for a lot over the years, and now, Mushroom FM has just published an audio tutorial on Internet broadcasting for screen reader users. If you think you have what it takes to join our team, but you're not sure how all this Internet broadcasting malarkey works, we can help you out. Jonathan Mosen and Brian Hartgen have developed The Mushroom FM Fun guys Guide to Internet Broadcasting. This is an audio tutorial that will help get you up and running. The tutorial runs for 3 hours 20 minutes, and covers things like: A detailed look at StationPlaylist Studio that shows how to set up and run this software in an Internet broadcast situation. You'll learn about the benefits of using a mixer, how to cope with requests, how to use cart machines and more. A look at options for getting your broadcast to the Internet, including using facilities within StationPlaylist Studio, using free Winamp tools, or the optional StationPlaylist Streamer. Using the Sam Encoders with soon to be released JAWS scripts to optimise your streaming experience. A session where you hear all the tools we've discussed in action as an actual radio show goes to air. A brief overview of StationPlaylist Creator and how it can be used to make live Internet broadcasting easier. The tutorial is available for free download in two formats. The DAISY version can be played using DAISY playback software on your PC, such as the free FSReader that is included with JAWS 11 and above. It can also be played on portable devices such as the Victor Reader Stream, Book Sense, Plextalk Pocket and Bookport Plus. The DAISY file is a little bigger to download, however the DAISY navigation makes moving between sections of the tutorial very easy. The MP3 version of the tutorial can be played on your PC or any MP3 capable device. Both tutorial files have identical content, they are only different formats. Both downloads are zip files. You can extract them using the built-in zip support in Windows. To get this free Internet broadcasting tutorial, just head on over to http://www.MushroomFM.com blocked::http://www.mushroomfm.com/ and choose the Become a Presenter link. Internet Broadcasting Audio Tutorial to be Released
Mushroom FM is proud to announce the imminent release of the Mushroom FM Fun Guys Guide to Internet Broadcasting. Over the years I've met, or been in correspondence with, people who love the idea of getting into Internet radio as a broadcaster, but who really don't know where or how to get started. In the short and very successful period Mushroom FM has been around, we've been approached by a number of people who would make fantastic team members, if they could unravel the technical mysteries of how to make Internet radio magic. In talking about this issue with Brian Hartgen, who is Operations Manager at Mushroom FM, we decided to create an audio tutorial that we could give to people who approached us about being part of the team, but didn't know where to start. And so the work began, with us dividing the work roughly in half for us to complete outside of our day job time. Now that the project is near completion, we realise that what we have created is a resource for which there has been considerable demand for some years within the blind community. So we have decided to donate this work, and make the tutorial available for free to anyone who wants to know a bit about Internet broadcasting. We hope many people will benefit from it, and that if you, like us, get bitten by the Internet radio bug, you'll approach Mushroom FM, the people taking voluntary Internet broadcasting to the next level with our innovations, quality output, and high standards. With over three hours of audio content, The Mushroom FM Fun Guys Guide to Internet Broadcasting will be released soon as a DAISY audio book, able to be played with software DAISY players, as well as portable devices capable of DAISY playback. This will make it easy for you to listen on whatever player suits you, while you follow along on your PC. Topics covered include: A detailed look at StationPlaylist Studio that shows how to set up and run this software in an Internet broadcast situation. You can read more at the official Hot Spot Clicker site: www.hotspotclicker.org It's a great program that can bring accessibility to unaccessible apps. RE: Bookport Plus podcast
Hi Andre, you're correct to a point. The Plextalk Pocket and Bookport Plus are identical hardware. Visually, the only difference is that the Plextalk branded hardware is available in black or white, while the Bookport Plus is available in silver. On the user interface side, there are about 80 differences. These mainly involve playback for now, since the Plextalk Pocket already beat its competition on the recording side by a long way. Navigation within a title is very different in the Bookport Plus compared with the Plextalk Pocket firmware, I think APH have done a brilliant job here. Also the firmware is more responsive. APH is using a human voice for recorded prompts, and I believe Plextalk's Audible.com support hasn't been released yet, whereas it's set for release in the first Bookport Plus firmware. APH also have some clear plans for enabling the WiFi that has been in the unit since the beginning but not enabled in software to this point. These OEM arrangements are not at all unusual. The Pocket is an outstanding recorder. If APH can make it catch up on the playback side, it'll be wonderful. Moodio is a portal for mobile phones allowing you to stream any Internet radio station. It is easy to sign up, and the site is 100% accessible, both on your PC and phone. Moodio has a large database of streaming radio stations from which you can choose. If a station you want isn't in the database, you can add it with an easy form. Once you've added the stations you want, you log in with your phone and your list of stations is available to you. The service transcodes the stream for you, and sends it to your phone. There are two reasons why this is very cool. First, my one ongoing annoyance with Symbian is its lack of streaming Windows Media support. But with Moodio, any Windows Media stream is available to you on your phone, as our Shoutcast streams and a wide range of other formats. Second, even if your phone supports some of these formats out of the box, Moodio might save you money. If you have a cap on the amount of data you can use each month, Moodio can send you the stream at a lower bit rate than the original stream. let's take the stream for The Legend as an example. It is a 128KBPS MP3 stream, which uses about 15 K per second. In a little over 1 minute, you'll have used a meg. The default bit rate from Moodio is 24KBPS parametric stereo. For the same stream transcoded by Moodio after a minute, you'll have used only 180K. So you are getting the same stream, using about a fifth of the data. Now because of the transcoding, and the lower bit rate, it's not going to sound as good as the original. But the bit rate of the stream you receive is configurable, so if quality rather than data consumption is your aim, crank up the bit rate. I'm thrilled to have found this, it really does rock. RE: [StationPlaylist] Version 1 of JAWS scripts for Station Playlist
Hi Peter, the two programs go hand and glove. Creator helps you define your program elements into categories, spotgroups, and then rotations that specify the order in which those different elements will play. Then it generates the playlist. This software is quite accessible out of the box, and the scripts do not cover this. Then, you need something to actually broadcast with. Studio plays the playlists that Creator has generated, and is an environment for broadcasting either entirely automated, or in live assist mode. The scripts are for Studio. hope this helps. StationPlaylist Studio Scritps V1.2
Hi V1.2 of the Station Playlist scripts is now available to download from outbind://119/www.hartgen.org www.hartgen.org This release contains a few bug fixes, and two features. First, it is now possible to have jaws notify you of the endings of songs at a time specified by the user. While we did have this in V1.1, this function now allows you to not be focused within Station Playlist. So you can be checking your Email and Twitter etc while the monitoring is taking place. In order to have this function, a modification is made to your jaws default scripts. Please read the installation notes carefully prior to installing. Second, pressing insert F12 twice quickly will now report the time including the seconds. Once pressed, the Braille display constantly shows the time including the ongoing seconds count which is incredibly useful. This occurs until a key is pressed whereupon of course the Braille display will show whatever it is you have requested. The documentation of course reflects all of these new items. Enjoy! RE: multi-tracking software.
Yes that one's called Multiquence. I don't know how accessible it is, Sonar seems to be the gold standard for multitrack and accessibility although Audacity is one to watch. For a really good implementation of sound on sound, which is what Sound Forge, Goldwave etc do, Studio Recorder is amazing since you can actually hear what you're recording over. First, I usually use it with Bluetooth with some very nice Plantronics Bluetooth stereo headphones I got about 15 months ago, but yes, that does help drain one's battery, even if it's the higher-capacity one. Hi Andre, the N82 has a standard 3.5 headphone jack, as do a number of the newer phones. For those phones that use a Nokia Pop port, a simple adapter is readily available. Hi Ken, my personal view is that you need to look at music in the context of what else you might like to do on the go. For example, if you use a cell phone or might like to, then getting an accessible cell phone with a good music player, such as those from Nokia, might be the best option. The Victor Reader Stream will play NLS books, which in North America is certainly a factor, however other than this, I see no point in it at all. It is another device to carry around. The Stream sells fairly well in North America, where the smart phone culture is not well established. But on the Nokia N82 I have, not only can I read print on the go with the KNFB Reader mobile, but I can also play DAISY books, work with MP3 files in a very accessible and flexible way, listen to Audible content and download podcasts right from the phone. So there is no need to carry another device around with me that duplicates those functions. If you don't want an accessible cell phone, then there are many portable music playback options. The Stream is certainly worth considering and that will also read DAISY and regular texts. You might even look at an iPod Shuffle which is very easy to operate and small. This will play music and Audible books, but not DAISY. There are many more, the Zenstone seems quite popular. And let's not forget the iPod Nano, which talks now. Shift+insert is the command to insert tracks. Depending on your screen reader and the way you have it configured, you may need to use its bypass key before using this command. You can define, via the settings, folders to search and insertion is extremely fast. Hi Orhan, all you need to do is arrow to the track you want the song inserted before, and insert. I've been using StationPlaylist Studio for six years and this works for me every time. Hour markers in Studio have a very specific purpose and they have nothing to do with insertion. Unless I am mistaken, when you are playing a track in station playlist, and you try to insert a track just at the last minute, it will go above the track you are playing. RE: Itunes 8 now accessible
Hi Stephen, I have not played with one so am going based on what I've read, but it appears that what happens is that when your nano is connected to your PC or Mac, a scan is made for all albums and songs on your nano. Using your default system voice, say RealSpeak Daniel in SAPI 5 as an example, files are generated for every artist, song and album. These are then copied to your Nano so that as you move through the menus, albums and tracks, you can hear what these tracks are. So this is quite different from having real text to speech on the device itself, and emulates what the guys at Rockbox gave us quite some time ago, but is still commendable nonetheless. The nanos go up to 16GB. I am really curious, given the technique they are using to do the speech, why it's not available on all the newer units including the hard drive-based players. RE: Itunes 8 now accessible
Hi Rick, it depends on what else you're doing. On my N82, I get about 10-12 hours of continuous music on a plane, that is to say when the phone functions aren't running. It's less when they are, and less again if you have WiFi active. Some of the new Nokia phones offer over 24 hours of music playback though. Another advantage of going with the Nokia phones is their built-in support for podcasting. I was in a meeting in another city a couple of days ago. On my way to the airport, I used a HSDPA connection to download a bunch of podcasts and catch up with the news in-flight. The podcast client remembers your place in each podcast. There is a DAISY player for Symbian as well, so you can read newspapers from Newsline etc on it. The N82 will also play Audible content. And even though I don't have one of the phones with longer music playback time because I use the KNFB Reader which only works on the N82 for now, I have a tiny device with me that is a 3400 MA battery, allowing me to charge the phone 3 times. The battery in turn then charges via a wall outlet or USB port. So for me, carrying an iPod, a Stream, or whatever it might be makes no sense. A smartphone does so much more and is in your pocket for a range of uses. In the US, obviously NLS may be a factor, but it isn't for me. Hi Gary, There is software downloadable from the Rockbox site that does exactly what the software for the nano is doing. IE, it scans the MP3 player for files, uses your default speech synthesiser to make recordings of the albums, folders and file names, and puts those recordings with a special file extension onto the Rockbox-enabled player. I know, as I've used it regularly. The only time Rockbox will spell the files out is if you don't use this utility. That said, you can't play Audible or protected iTunes content on Rockbox. It's also nice that the voice tagging of menus and songs is done automatically by iTunes once the feature is activated in the software. Rockbox is nice also, but there's no automated way of voice tagging songs, and we have to settle for the titles being spelled instead of spoken. In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). Because of this, JAWS will be able to work well out of the box with iTunes once we enable MSAA support for iTunes in the next public beta of JAWS 10. RE: Getting imbedded streams to come up directly in Media Player, is it possible?
Hi Lynn, I use the URL finder in Replay AV for this purpose all the time. You run the URL finder, visit the page with the embedded player, and the URL finder puts all the URLs it finds into a listview. Sometimes it can take a bit of trial and error to get the right URL from the list, but most of the time it works a treat. For this reason, not only do I use Replay AV to record Internet streams, but I also use it as a tuner of sorts, with all my favourite streams in a single place irrespective of media type. And I can then take the URL of the stream for use with my PAC Mate Omni. Hi Vinny and all, ah apologies for the misinformation. There have been other times with cricket matches for example where Radio Sport didn't restrict their streaming. I guess the Olympic people put the pressure on them to develop the technology to restrict based on the IP address of the listener. RE: Free-For-All Friday
Hi Larry, I don't think anyone is threatening anyone with anything. If a list no longer meets one's needs, it's perfectly appropriate to leave that list. As the discussion is about whether a change in the direction of the list is a good idea, those who believe that such a change would mean that the list no longer meets their needs are just as entitled to express a view as are those who believe it's a good idea. I already subscribe to a number of lists that exist exclusively for this purpose. One such list is streamad. [EMAIL PROTECTED] In fact, Streamad was founded in response to too many promotional posts on the PC-Audio list, which I founded back in 1998. I am a member of this list to read about tips and tricks regarding audio on the PC. That is at this point its purpose, and it is that which interests me. RE: Free-For-All Friday
Hi tom, let me say that as the founder of this list, I am really glad you are looking after it. It's a thankless task. I also think it's a credit to you that you sound people out for their views on these sorts of issues. I'd like to suggest that there is a difference between free for all advertising of podcasts and streams, and the mentioning of PC-Audio related streams or podcasts in context. For example, I think someone posted here about the recent main menu broadcast on MP3 players. To me, such a post is perfectly appropriate, since it directs people to additional info on matters pertaining to the subject matter of this list. Similarly, I think in response to someone's question about iTunes on here a while back, I directed people to the January FSCast. Similarly, I think the may FSCast would indeed be of real interest to people on here. To be honest I just forgot to mention it here. Petro often mentions his podcasts on Replay AV, and that's right on topic too in my opinion. This, to me, is all good stuff. What I think would detract from the list is everyone being able to write in to say, come and listen to my podcast where I've done a sound seeing tour of my dentist's waiting room or whatever. So to me, if the subject matter of a stream or podcast is of the kind that would be considered on topic for this list, it is worth a one-off mention. Thanks for your work on the list and keep up the great work. Thanks to all for your thoughtful and enlightening comments. I actually aggree with most of the posts thinking that an e-mail list should be rather restrictive in the content that is permitted. I'll explain my reasoning below for making the suggestion if anyone is interested in reading it. Otherwise, go to the next message. A week or so ago there were a few comments posted to the list about a piece of software that was no longer going to be accessible with a screen reader. Shortly after reading those posts I listened to the May issue of FS Cast and was amazed what all Jonathan was doing with the PAC Mate Omni. I got to thinking, and me thinking is a problem in itself, this is something any blind person who is the least bit interested in audio and computers should hear. I'm sure those podcasts have more listeners than this list has members, but there might be members of this list who aren't aware of that podcast. Likewise, there are other podcasts that I think are extremely helpful in teaching and demonstrating a lot of accessible hardware and software and perhaps a few list members would find them of interest. I think sometimes, we emphasize too much the negative and forget the positives of accessibility. RE: Shoutcast and Live 365
Hi Marsha, it's been a long time since I've used Live365, but I think this is still an accurate summary of the differences. Live365.com is a hosting service, which offers a directory of stations it hosts. It is, if you like, an all in one solution. You can upload your content and have them stream for you, or you can stream live to them from your PC. They publicise your station for you on their site. Depending on the plan you choose, and the plan the listener chooses, they may insert ads into your station. Shoutcast.com is a place from which you can download the Shoutcast software, including the Winamp plug-in and the server. It is also a directory where anyone using this software can choose to be listed if they wish. They do not offer hosting to the general public however. You need to find that elsewhere, either by running the server on a computer on your own connection, or by streaming to a Shoutcast server hosted somewhere else, such as http://www.ultrastreams.us or similar service. So basically, the big difference is that Live365 offers you bandwidth and streaming, Shoutcast.com as a rule will not and will require you to get that elsewhere. Personally, I'd go with Shoutcast because the end user, the one who this is all for, doesn't have to log into any special service, and you are free to widely publish the direct URL to your Shoutcast stream that people can paste into a Shoutcast compatible player. Hope this helps. Jonathan Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The limited reading I've done on this suggests that MP3sparks and MP3fiesta are actually competitors, both from Russia. They may look the same, but apparently, they're not. Eton E1 on Sale at Circuit City
For those of you living in the US, given that we had a discussion a week or so ago about the Eton E1, I thought I'd pass on that apparently it is back on sale for just $224.99 at Circuit City. Quite a bargain if anyone wants to snap up what many consider to be the best shortwave portable ever made. Hi larry, in the January 2008 edition of FSCast, which I host and produce, I demonstrated using iTunes in conjunction with jTunes. Larry here. Steve posted the original jTunes update message, forwarded from another list. So far as I know, it's still in the coming soon category. this post concerning the updated version of the program is actually the first that I've heard of it. Do you own the previous version? can you tell me anything about cost and such? To date, as far as I know, this application represents the only means by which a blind person can successfully navigate iTunes. For whatever my info might be worth, I asked the Window-Eyes folks if their soon to be released version 7.0 would offer similar iTunes support, but a representative indicated preference to withhold comment until the release of Window-Eyes 7.0. Certainly their privellege, but it leaves me uncertain as to whether to purchase jTunes straight away. At any rate, since I am presently reviewing screen reader options for reasons that do not apply to this list, I am very interested in jTunes. I have jaws 8 on board and jTunes claims to work with Jaws 6 through 9. If I happen to see news of an official release before it is posted by another member, I'll certainly pass along what I learn. RE: MLB game day audio help needed
Hi all, you can certainly install Silverlight if you want to, and the need for it is increasing, however you don't have to install it for MLB. The old player based on Windows Media Player still works. Kelly Ford discovered this and posted about it on the BlindTech list, and his instructions worked fine for me. Here's what he says. I've been able to make the WMP control work as of today. I set JAWS to read all graphics in the HTML page by pressing ins+v and choosing that graphic option. The default is only tagged. There are then two graphics listed as trans. I select the second of these and the WMP player is used to play audio.] Jonathan -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gary G Schindler Sent: Tuesday, 1 April 2008 7:03 a.m. To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: MLB game day audio help needed John it just worked for me, scroll down the page and you will find the games. you will se the time, TV feed and the radio feeds to listen to the games. - Original Message - From: John Schwery [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Monday, March 31, 2008 1:27 PM Subject: Re: MLB game day audio help needed Mike, I accessed your link from your post and didn't bookmark anything. earlier, Mike Pietruk, wrote: John Here is the link I always use: mlb baseball Multimedia Guide http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mediacenter/index.jsp When I click on that right now, I am shown today's games. Yes they do say it's an estimate only. I think this is because certain VBR files may be difficult to calculate precisely. I've found it pretty good generally though. RE: my radio future was short Wave radio questions
Hi Dane, Universal Radio does ship internationally, but not for all products. The Eton E1 XM is expressly not shippable by them outside of the US. I don't know whether the same applies to the Eton E1 without the XM. Circuit City appears not to ship at all outside of the US. It will be interesting to see how DAB goes in Australia. It is being switched off in Germany, it is faltering in the UK, and some are suggesting it's going the way of stereo AM, betamax, and HDDVD. This disappoints me really because the problem with the US so-called HDRadio standard is that it uses existing spectrum and thus protects the entrenched positions of the existing major players. As for my radio future? Well I'm saving for a second-generation DAB receiver, should be very nice. DAB officially starts in Australia on January 1st next year however the roll-out of DAB receivers officially starts on 1st April so we're going to hear a lot about DAB in the coming months, let's hope it doesn't end up the way Stereo AM did. In the end I chose the Eton E1, made by Grundig. In the US, there is a version of the Eton E1 that also offers XM capability. The E1 is the best receiver I've owned since my good old Sony 2010, and there really is no other portable out there that came close on specs. The wide filter makes broadcast AM sound fantastic. Even for AM though, you do need to have the antenna extended. Here's some of what universal Radio has to say about it. The Etón E1 XM (originally announced as the Grundig Satellit 900) is the world's first radio that combines AM, FM, shortwave and XM Satellite radio into one ultra high-performance unit. In development for nearly ten years, in collaboration with RL Drake Company and XM Satellite Radio, the E1 XM is simply the finest full-sized portable in the world. The E1 is an elegant confluence of performance, features and capabilities. The look, feel and finish of this radio is superb. The solid, quality feel is second to none. The digitally synthesized, dual conversion shortwave tuner covers all shortwave frequencies. Adjacent frequency interference can be minimized or eliminated with a choice of three bandwidths [7.0, 4.0, 2.5 kHz]. The sideband selectable Synchronous AM Detector further minimizes adjacent frequency interference and reduces fading distortion of AM signals. IF Passband Tuning is yet another advanced feature that functions in AM and SSB modes to reject
