RE: Winamp is making me mad
Can VLC get you from point A to Point B in a file? That's one of the things I loved (still love) about Winamp (and I'm not talking just about hitting the arrow key and finding it manually) with Winamp, you can actually go to a certain spot in a file; this comes in handy...let's say you've been listening to a long program (and you can't finish right then and there) Winamp has the ability to let you see where you are in the file; then you can come right back to it the next time you want to listen to that particular show! Hi all, Several years ago, I purchased a pair of AKG Q701 headphones for use with a home stereo. These are, in my opinion, outstanding phones, especially considering the price is around $200 or a bit more on Amazon. They are wonderfully comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, more so than any other phones I've seen, bar none. Recent reviews indicate some dissatisfaction, since these are now apparently being made in China, rather than Austria, the home country of AKG. But that's not the point of this message. I have tried my Q701 with the headphone output of my iPhone and find the output of the phone isn't sufficient to drive the Qs well. So I looked into the possibility of a portable headphone amp, such as the fiio e12, which has pretty decent reviews on Amazon. It is not clear to me, however, how you get the signal from the lightning port on the phone to the little amp, as it doesn't seem to come with a cable. You can purchase a separate LOD from fiio, but it has the old style 30-pin connector. You could then purchase an official Apple lightning adapter at some ridiculously inflated price, of course, and then I suppose the set up would work, although I don't think this amp has a DAC, and I'm not sure if you'd need one of those anyway. So, the question. What are folks doing who have head phones which are not driven adequately by the crummy output stages found in portable devices like phones etc? Mary

I have gotten some of those recently. But most CDs still come back Unknown when I try to rip them with Winamp. However, now that I've found a CD ripper that usually does know what it's ripping, and that works very well, (EZ CD Audio Converter), not being able to do it with Winamp is not such an issue anymore. There is mid-range though and I think it would sound great for the average Gregorian chant. Also be wary that room size and placement of sthese radios is critical and there is no automated room correction built in. Frank

Okay then...if you can get that stream into favorites...then just bring up the streaming page that should work, shouldn't it? I can not find the site in Tapin's database, so if I go directly to the site itself and get the live stream playing, is there a way to get Tapin to record that stream? Thanks. RE: Strange Problem With Ripping CD With CDEX
It doesn't seem like (at least to me) that ripping CDs with Windows Media is as cut and dried as it used to be with WMP 11; that's why I went back to Cdex! As I said before, it seems strange to me that CD 1 and CD 2 did just fine! But it's telling me no match found with CD 3! In case this helps, am running Jaws 16 on a Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit (if this matters at all) will try again later on today as it could be that there may have just been a problem with that Freed server or something? Well now...since I have an earlier version OD Cdex, would it help if I went on and upgraded to the latest version? The best thing to compare the features of Total Recorder I'm trying to explain to is a CD Player, I'm sure you're all familiar with the Cue/Review functionality of a CD Player, you press Cue and you hear the speed increase of the audio but the pitch stays the same.

RE: Reinstalled Total Recorder
I have been using Total Recorder since either 22008 or 2009; the only thing I know of that would make it even better for me is if there were some way (and maybe there is and I don't know about it) but if I could record an audio stream and still use my screen reading software (in my case, that screen reader would be Jaws 16) now I am using the standard version of TR; have never been clear if I went to the pro version if I could then record and still do things like listen and type emails and such or not! This is one of the neat things I like about Tapin Radio; you can do whatever you want with your computer and it won't mess up your recording as Tapin Radio records _directly_ from the internet! I've been using Total Recorder since early 2003 - I started using it when the swecond Gulf war started - and the software has never let me down and has produced very good recordings which is more than I can say for some of the more expensive pieces of software which do two things obviously, promise so much but deliver so little and take an eternity to actually get the recording started. Express Rip Options
Hello list: If you've been following the thread where I'm wanting to get Winamp to play my CDs, you may already know that Express Rip keeps coming up. It was suggested that maybe I could go into the options menu of Express Rip and change something. Well I've been in there and see no way to change it! But it may be that I'm missing something? Is it is now, if I put in a CD, Express Rip comes up and gives me the choice to certify as unlicensed CD (or something like that) or there is a pricing thing; I cannot close it out as it will not let me do that! So then my only recourse is to choose certify Unlicensed CD (or whatever that is saying) so thought I would seek you all out and see if you can tell me what to do as I would like Winamp to be the player that plays my CDs; all other things that have been suggested just aren't working for me! Tapin Radio And WSM
Does anyone know why Tapin Radio no longer seems to play WSM? I know for a fact that the WSM audio stream still works! It played in Tapin until sometime late last night; now.it just does nothing when I click it! Also I have discovered that the search box in Tapin seems to not do anything! Any ideas as to what's going on? Is it something I could have inadvertently done to cause all of this? Tom Kaufman

It's very fast, and you don't have to convert the files. It doesn't have a lot of the features that a program like sound forge has but it is very reliable. -Original Message- From: Steve Jacobson Sent: Monday, July 14, 2014 9:32 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: RE: Need Help with Sound Forge Pro 11 Bob, These are all very good points. I'd like to explain a bit more about my earlier response in case it helps Kelly. I was editing a four hour MP3 file over the weekend, and I was finding everything to be very sluggish including moving through the file with PGUP and PGDN. Since I had worked with some other large files in SF 11 I wondered what had changed. It turned out that I had generally worked with WAV files before. I saved my MP3 file as a WAV file and worked on it in that format and much of the sluggishness I was experiencing was gone. Of course, converting an MP3 file to WAV doesn't make it sound any better, but it did make a large difference in my ability to move around in the file. It may be my imagination as it is not that easy to verify this, but I believe that saving a file takes longer in SF 11 than it did in SF 10 or before, but I could be experiencing something else, or it could be the added overhead that you mention. It has been my experience that heavy file activity can lock out screen readers or make them not responsive, so saving a file might be causing the appearance of loosing speech. Sometimes starting NVDA or Narrator can help one figure out what is happening. Best regards, Steve Jacobson On Mon, 14 Jul 2014 11:13:34 +1000, Robert Nelson wrote: SF 11 is a far more complex program than SF 6. The way that SF handles the file being edited has changed because it is now a multi-channel editor and every time you do something that causes SF to write out the edited files to protect you from yourself, it takes time to complete the process. How quick the process will be is dependent on the read/write speed of your hard disk. If you are working on a large file, that is to say, 4 or 5 hour mp3, then it will appear to be slow. The only setting that you might change is the location of temporary files. If you use a separate drive for the temporary files, there may be some gain but that will depend on the read/write sppeed. And, no, using a solid state drive will not really improve things that much because the Windows way of reading and writing to disk pretty well negates any gain there may be in using a SSD. The mp3 codec does appear to be slower than in SF 6 but you must remember that the program is doing a lot more processing than SF 6 did. Opening, editing and saving in wav format may be slightly quicker but you will eventually have to convert it to mp3. However, I find that for files of an hour or less the performance is on a par with SF 8D. The moral of the story may well be that the Sony people did not anticipate that SF would be used to edit 7 or 8 hour long files. However, I've noticed that this new version seems to be rather sluggish when compared to 6.0D. For instance, if I have two files loaded, and I switch to the other file by either using the Window menu or pressing Control+Tab, it seems to take awhile before I can do anything again. With 6.0D, going to a new window was instantaneous. There have also been times where I'll be doing some editing, and the program will seem to freeze for a couple minutes. When this happens, I lose speech, but can Alt+Tab to another program, such as WinAmp. Eventually, everything works fine again, but I find this very frustrating. If anyone else is using this version, have you experienced these issues? Are there any settings I should adjust to make it work more smoothly? Thanks.
