RE: Winamp is making me mad

2015-05-27 Thread Tom Kaufman
Can VLC get you from point A to Point B in a file? That's one of the
things I loved (still love) about Winamp (and I'm not talking just about
hitting the arrow key and finding it manually) with Winamp, you can
actually go to a certain spot in a file; this comes in handy...let's say
you've been listening to a long program (and you can't finish right then and
there) Winamp has the ability to let you see where you are in the file; then
you can come right back to it the next time you want to listen to that
particular show!

VLC is the most flexible and configurable player I've ever had the
fortunate to use and it plays every format I've ever thrown at it
whether that be audio or video, got a pleasant surprise when I used it
to play a Real Audio stream a few days ago.

I use a little headphone amplifier made by a company called Headroom. It
takes 4 AAA batteries.

What I like about it is that it has a high and low impedence switch so it
caters for all kinds of headphones.

You get a short cable with it which allows you to connect your mp3 device
or whatever to the 3.5 mm input of the amplifier. It also has a usb socket
so you can use it as a sound card also.

I think it was called the Egghead or something like that.

Hi all,

Several years ago, I purchased a pair of AKG Q701 headphones for use with a
home stereo. These are, in my opinion, outstanding phones, especially
considering the price is around $200 or a bit more on Amazon. They are
wonderfully comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, more so than
any other phones I've seen, bar none. Recent reviews indicate some
dissatisfaction, since these are now apparently being made in China, rather
than Austria, the home country of AKG. But that's not the point of this
message.

I have tried my Q701 with the headphone output of my iPhone and find the
output of the phone isn't sufficient to drive the Qs well. So I looked into
the possibility of a portable headphone amp, such as the fiio e12, which has
pretty decent reviews on Amazon. It is not clear to me, however, how you get
the signal from the lightning port on the phone to the little amp, as it
doesn't seem to come with a cable. You can purchase a separate LOD from
fiio, but it has the old style 30-pin connector. You could then purchase an
official Apple lightning adapter at some ridiculously inflated price, of
course, and then I suppose the set up would work, although I don't think
this amp has a DAC, and I'm not sure if you'd need one of those anyway. So,
the question. What are folks doing who have head phones which are not driven
adequately by the crummy output stages found in portable devices like phones
etc?

Mary

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Over the past three days about a hundred e-mail addresses
have been bouncing messages from the pc audio list. If you
reply to the message you receive about the bounce your bounce
flag will be reset. If the bounces stop the bounce flag will
automatically be set to off. I am looking into another e-mail
list host and will let you know when the change takes place.
There shouldn't be much delay in the transfer.

If you want to check to see if you are still subscribed
please don't send a message with the word test in the subject
or text. Those messages are referred to me for approval and
it might be a few hours to a day before I get to them.

I am keeping track of all bounced and disabled e-mail
addresses so when the list is at a new home I'll make sure
everybody is still subscribed.

Thank you,

Tom, List owner.

time. Using 2.2.1. I'm pretty sure an earlier version of VLC didn't do that.

 Any recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I need something like Winamp used to have that gets file information for
.mp3 files that aren't labeled correctly. I found one program that does
this, but it is coompletely inaccessible with JAWS, no matter what I try.
The name of this is Wondershare TidyMyMusic. Any help is appreciated!

I mostly agree with this. The chief problem I've had with not having an
update to Winamp is that it doesn't know what CDs are anymore, except those
newer ones that have their track data embeded in the CD itself. I have
gotten some of those recently. But most CDs still come back Unknown when I
try to rip them with Winamp.
However, now that I've found a CD ripper that usually does know what it's
ripping, and that works very well, (EZ CD Audio Converter), not being able
to do it with Winamp is not such an issue anymore.
So it would be nice to see that someone was behind the program, but it
doesn't matter as much to me now as it used to. As long as it keeps working
I'll keep using it for what it can do.

Both my wife and mother-in-law have those Bose radios. I'd rather listen to
a dentist's drill. The highs and vocals sound like I have cotton balls in my
ears. The low end, is non-existent and its obvious that Bose believes bass
to be something only a 16 year old in a Honda Civic has any interest in.
There is mid-range though and I think it would sound great for the average
Gregorian chant. Also be wary that room size and placement of sthese radios
is critical and there is no automated room correction built in.

I don't know how other screen readers work, but with Jaws, if you do an
alt-D (this puts you at the address bar) so then you'd do your control-c

 Hello fellow pc-audio listers:

Does anyone know how to get Tapin Radio to record live streams that come
from other sites to which are not part of the Tapin Radio database?

For example, the local church in my area has a live stream of their cermon
that broadcasts on their site. I can not find the site in Tapin's
database,
so if I go directly to the site itself and get the live stream playing, is
there a way to get Tapin to record that stream? Thanks.

Okay then...if you can get that stream into favorites...then just bring up
the streaming page that should work, shouldn't it? I know I've done it
before...although has been a little while since I've tried it! So in short,
you're just bringing up the page that the stream it's on (not the station
address itself) try that and see if you have luck with it!

The URL or web address of the website is not the URL of the stream. For
example, our internet radio station (in Spanish) is located at
http://radiogeneral.com while the address of the stream is
http://radiogeneral.com:8000 and, more frequently than not, people who don't
have a streaming server of their own, but contract a streaming service, will
show an IP address, such as http://72.123.45.67:8122 and notice also that
the port number, which normally defaults to 8000, could be any number other
than those already asigned to other tasks, normally any number over 1000 and
that the number may be followed by a slash and a mount point.

still think it odd that the CD I'm having the problem with comes from that
same boxed set (if the whole set was that way, I'd maybe agree that the
company didn't bother to put out the info) but it's the same set (CD 1 and 2
work fine) but thanks to those of you who are making suggestions and who are

Download the Player.exe from
http://www.vuplayer.com/player.php
Install it and agree to terms.
Start the player.
Insert a CD and wait till it's recognized.
Pres control+p to export the information in the player.ini.
Open CDEx and cancel the process of searching the data base.
Press alt and navigate to the right to CDDB.
Press arrow down till you find Read from player.ini and hit enter.
The information should be there.
I only very rarely have a CD that the combination of FreeCDDB and Gracenote
don't cover.

Good luck and get back to me, if you need any further help.
Take care,

That's quite often the case with free CDDB which is why I complement

I think that the most unique application I have is to get autographs at
live concerts. While other people in line get written autographs on the
recordings that they buy I have the artist create a lable for me in their

But I do have a question. When backing up do you just copy the last file or

Another thing to look out for, I think the editing features etc of Total

Also note that many of the extra recording functionality such as
Background Recording are not available in the Standard edition.

I have both the Video and Pro editions of Total Recorder here, the Video

Hi!

I’m expecting the AirPlay version of the JBL Soundfly speaker system any day

I found a review which compares the 2 JBL Soundly models out there, one is
AirPlay compatible whilst the other is Bluetooth.

The review pretty much confirms my thoughts on this sort of speaker system, its
not a stunner for audio quality but then again I never expected it to be so
given its small size, the Soundly plugs directly into a wall outlet so its
going to be absolutely perfect for my bathroom where bench space is already at
a premium, at least I’ll be able to enjoy my music or whatever.

not a stunner for audio quality but then again I never expected it to be so
given its small size, the Soundly plugs directly into a wall outlet so its
going to be absolutely perfect for my bathroom where bench space is already at
a premium, at least I’ll be able to enjoy my music or whatever.

I have been using Total Recorder since either 22008 or 2009; the only thing
I know of that would make it even better for me is if there were some way
(and maybe there is and I don't know about it) but if I could record an
audio stream and still use my screen reading software (in my case, that
screen reader would be Jaws 16) now I am using the standard version of TR;
have never been clear if I went to the pro version if I could then record
and still do things like listen and type emails and such or not! This is
one of the neat things I like about Tapin Radio; you can do whatever you
want with your computer and it won't mess up your recording as Tapin Radio
records _directly_ from the internet!

Ye, I can understand where you're coming from there and that makes
perfect sense.

I haven't been using Total Recorder a lot mainly due to the reasons I
outlined in the first eMail of this discussion but there is still
nothing that equals the recording power of the Total Recorder software
package under Windows to my knowledge.

I've been using Total Recorder since early 2003 - I started using it
when the swecond Gulf war started - and the software has never let me
down and has produced very good recordings which is more than I can say
for some of the more expensive pieces of software which do two things
obviously, promise so much but deliver so little and take an eternity to
actually get the recording started.

Just an update to let people know that I solved the problem I was having

reinstall my anti-virus program which is ESET Smart Security version 8.
Since doing this I can update TapinRadio presets and listen to stations

next lot of new presets. If I can't at least next time I'll know where
to start to find a solution. I hope this helps others who are having

Sure, WMP has some annoying problems in my opinion, its not very flexible

My favourite player across platforms is VLC which just keeps getting better.

 Hi!

I'm setting up another Windows machine for someone who wants to stream media
files from the machine to DLAN compatible devices, in particular a
 Surround-Sound Receiver.

I'm no expert when ot comes to the DLNA side of things and I know this topic

order to see if I could discover any new information on the topic, and low
and behold, I found what seems to be quite a nice tutorial on the subject,

Hi Chris and all,

Chris, thanks for your message. Unfortunately I don't have a solution to
your problem but I'm having a similar problem with TapinRadio that
started recently. Your message helped confirm the fact that I'm not the
only one having this problem.

For me though I now get similar messages to you when I try to go into
the Stations menu. Tapinradio crashes for me when I do this and gives me
the same message to what you get. I'm using ESET Smart Security as my
virus checker and recently upgraded to version 8 of this program. I
don't know if this is related to the TapinRadio problem or not though.

Hoping anyone having this problem finds a solution eventually.

Regards Steve.

Hi all,

We've heard from a number of people who are having problems with
TapinRadio crashing. I'm wondering if anyone on the list can
successfully listen to stations on TapinRadio at the moment. I know it
worked well previously so I'm only interested to know if some people can
hear stations using TapinRadio currently. Often I can't even get into
the stations menu to hear a station since the crashes started. If some
people can still listen to stations using TapinRadio this will show that
not everyone is having problems. However if no one on the list can now
listen to stations using TapinRadio I think it is more likely that this
crash is a problem on the TapinRadio end. Feedback would be appreciated
and I hope this issue is resolved quickly!

 Hi!

Someone on list asked about free CD Ripping Software a little while ago, I
answered with iTunes though of course I didn’t realise at the time that
there’s probably an even better answer built right into Windows itself which
I assume the questioner was using.

The answer of course is Windows Media Player which - when I last tried it -
 was very accessible indeed.

I didn’t follow the conversation at the time so perhaps someone else on list
 suggested Windows Media Player anyway.

Okay, the sample I’ve put a link to here is pretty basic, me leaving a Voice
Message on my Voicemail however the way it the whole thing was done is quite
fantastic to say the least.

I’m using the latest OS X from Apple for my Mac and the FaceTime App, up until
now FaceTime was used to make extremely high quality audio and video calls
where band width allowed.

This functionality still exists in the FaceTime App and new features have been
added, for this sample I had FaceTime use my Apple iPhone 6 as the connection
point if you like - FaceTime had my iPhone dial the number and the audio from
both microphone and speaker came from the Plantrics Audio 478 headset connected
to the Computer. -

Yes, this is only Voicemail I know and not top notch audio but quality is
surprisingly good I thought.

Revised Instructions For Scheduler In Tapin Radio

Hello list: I kind of put too many steps in the instructions to get to the
scheduler in Tapin Radio (it actually is close to what I said) only you
don't need to hit the enter key; if you do alt-A, this will bring up the
menu that has favorites and other things) once this is in view, hitting
the letter S will bring up the scheduler.  My apologies for the screw-up;
often, I do things without really thinking about how I'm doing it if it is
something I do every day; I have to sort of go back and retrace my own
steps, so to speak! Anyhow I hope these instructions are useful to the
person who wanted to know where the scheduler in Tapin Radio is.

If you type set default into the start menu search box the first result
 you
should see is set default programs. Press enter and tab once to see a
 list
of your programs. Arrow down to winamp and tab to the choose defaults
button and press enter. Then you can tab until you see a list of file
types. Arrow down until you find the CD and check the box. Then tab to
 the
 save button.

I hope this clarifies things a little. My apologies for the previously
 convoluted post.

escape and see if it is running. If it is, kill it and see what happens.

I think perhaps I made this harder than it should be.

Dan, I couldn't find any reason why Express rip would come up when Tom
inserts a CD. I am thinking that another instance of express Rip is running
on his machine. Maybe he can bring up the task manager with Control shift
escape and see if it is running. If it is, kill it and see what happens.

Have you checked the file type associations from within Winamp and
 settings

If you type set default into the start menu search box the first result
 you
should see is set default programs. Press enter and tab once to see a
 list
of your programs. Arrow down to winamp and tab to the choose defaults
button and press enter. Then you can tab until you see a list of file

I hope this clarifies things a little. My apologies for the previously

Hi Tom,

The answers Dan has given you are completely correct and will definitely
work. However as is often the case in Windows there are several ways to
achieve the same result.

Another method to fix this problem is to change settings in Winamp. When
in the main Winamp Window press Control+P to go to the Winamp
preferences. Tab until you get to a treeview in the preferences dialogue
box and make sure you are on General Preferences by pressing either the
up or down arrow keys. If the General Preferences branch of the treeview
is closed expand it using the right arrow key. Next press the down arrow
key until you get to an item in the treeview called File Types. Next
press Tab until you get to an option called Launch Winamp for Audio
CDs. this is a checkbox, make sure it is checked. Next Tab until you
get to a button called Close and press space on that. If everything
worked correctly When you insert an audio CD it should be played in Winamp.

I hope this helps.

Regards Steve.

I'm not sure if this is a jaws problem but it has happened in both jaws 14
and 15. When I have the winamp window open and a file is playing I can go
to another window and for no reason I have been able to figure out the focus

goes back to winamp. I was in a game and went to take my turn only to find

that somehow I was back in the winamp window.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning

Express Rip Options

2014-09-22 Thread Tom Kaufman
Hello list: If you've been following the thread where I'm wanting to get
Winamp to play my CDs, you may already know that Express Rip keeps coming
up. It was suggested that maybe I could go into the options menu of
Express Rip and change something. Well I've been in there and see no way to
change it! But it may be that I'm missing something? Is it is now, if I
put in a CD, Express Rip comes up and gives me the choice to certify as
unlicensed CD (or something like that) or there is a pricing thing; I
cannot close it out as it will not let me do that! So then my only recourse
is to choose certify Unlicensed CD (or whatever that is saying) so thought
I would seek you all out and see if you can tell me what to do as I would
like Winamp to be the player that plays my CDs; all other things that have
been suggested just aren't working for me!

Yep...that MP3 Direct Cut is just about the greatest thing (in my opinion)
since sliced bread when it comes to taking unwanted parts out of files! I
sometimes wish I had a quicker way of doing it (MP3 Direct Cut does provide
a way for that) I just haven't figured it out yet! But it's a good program
and will let Joanne do what she wants to do!

Hi Thom, It worked like charm.
Another tip is, that the page up and down and the arrow keys move the cursor

When the music is not playing.
So you don't hear the chatter but the space bar shows you where you are.

I'm not sure exactly how to do this. Is there a good and simple program
which will help me to remove commercials and to then join the file back

am not real sure how to make markers, etc., so if someone has an easier

You need a Flash add-on installed in your browser, be it Internet
 Explorer
or Firefox, to listen to a stream transmitted from an online Flash
 Player.
I use it in order to start streaming automatically as soon as the page
loads. I can get away with it because I use low volume and provide a
 button
to stop, others to pause or lower or increase volume.

I think the question is not about a browser but an actual player.
I'd also like to know of a player that allows you to speed up the play of
 a
file like the A P HStudio Recorder.

I might suggest using MP3 direct cut for editing MP3 files. It's very fast,

and you don't have to convert the files. It doesn't have a lot of the
features that a program like sound forge has but it is very reliable.

Bob,

These are all very good points. I'd like to explain a bit more about my
earlier response in case it helps Kelly.
I was editing a four hour MP3 file over the weekend, and I was finding
everything to be very sluggish including
moving through the file with PGUP and PGDN. Since I had worked with some
other large files in SF 11 I wondered
what had changed. It turned out that I had generally worked with WAV files
before. I saved my MP3 file as a WAV
file and worked on it in that format and much of the sluggishness I was
experiencing was gone. Of course,
converting an MP3 file to WAV doesn't make it sound any better, but it did
make a large difference in my ability
to move around in the file. It may be my imagination as it is not that easy

to verify this, but I believe that
saving a file takes longer in SF 11 than it did in SF 10 or before, but I
could be experiencing something else, or
it could be the added overhead that you mention. It has been my experience
that heavy file activity can lock out
screen readers or make them not responsive, so saving a file might be
causing the appearance of loosing speech.
Sometimes starting NVDA or Narrator can help one figure out what is
happening.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

SF 11 is a far more complex program than SF 6. The way that SF handles the

every time you do something that causes SF to write out the edited files to
protect you from yourself, it takes time to complete the process.

How quick the process will be is dependent on the read/write speed of your
hard disk. If you are working on a large file, that is to say, 4 or 5 hour
mp3, then it will appear to be slow.

The only setting that you might change is the location of temporary files.
If you use a separate drive for the temporary files, there may be some gain
but that will depend on the read/write sppeed.

And, no, using a solid state drive will not really improve things that much
because the Windows way of reading and writing to disk pretty well negates
any gain there may be in using a SSD.

The mp3 codec does appear to be slower than in SF 6 but you must remember
that the program is doing a lot more processing than SF 6 did.

Opening, editing and saving in wav format may be slightly quicker but you
will eventually have to convert it to mp3.

However, I find that for files of an hour or less the performance is on a
par with SF 8D.

The moral of the story may well be that the Sony people did not anticipate
that SF would be used to edit 7 or 8 hour long files.

Hi,

After recently getting a new 64-bit PC with Windows 7 Professional, I
decided to upgrade Sound Forge from 6.0D (which I've used for a number of
years) to the latest version, Pro 11. However, I've noticed that this new
version seems to be rather sluggish when compared to 6.0D.
For instance, if I have two files loaded, and I switch to the other file by
either using the Window menu or pressing Control+Tab, it seems to take
awhile before I can do anything again. With 6.0D, going to a new window was
instantaneous. There have also been times where I'll be doing some editing,
and the program will seem to freeze for a couple minutes. When this
happens,

I lose speech, but can Alt+Tab to another program, such as WinAmp.
Eventually, everything works fine again, but I find this very frustrating.
If anyone else is using this version, have you experienced these issues?
Are

there any settings I should adjust to make it work more smoothly?

Thanks.
