I still can't get the zoom to work. I may have to order two manuals.

I have found myself using lenses from 24mm to 400mm (210 + 2X actually) for
landscape. So I guess 50mm is not too long for landscape.

I have the fifth edition featuring the Spotmatic and have been
through it a couple of times. It's encouraging (for us manual
focus users) to read the older literature when these cameras
were praised as fast, capable instruments. Useful in discussion
of handling these cameras..you are expected to fire off two
frames per second with perfect composition. Like most older
books, very sparse on the types of lens discussions that crop up
on PDML.

I don't have this one, but some time back at Sam
Weller's I came across one of similar vintage:

New Heiland Pentax SLR Guide
by Kenneth S. Tydings
Copyright 1961, 2nd printing 1962.

It's been fun to read and of course the pictures of
the equipment are informative.

Some of these old books are a hoot in that they aren't
too "politically correct". I was looking at one there
about 6 months ago from the '60's and it described the
105/2.8 takumar as "a lens that you can focus on any
portion of a young lady's anatomy without her being
any the wiser".

How times have changed, huh?

Today you would need at least a 300mm :-)

Hope you are enjoying your stay here.

William in Utah.

Except for the FA 28-70/4 AL, probably among the best of the 'standard' 28-70 out
there..Also, the F 28-80 is also a good lens as well. I've never used the F
28-80 but do have the 28-70/4 and for the money, you'll not find a better lens in its
class, IMHO.

Re: Self-timer on Super Program

2001-03-12 Thread Steve Scott

>> it shouldn't be too tough to fix if what Alan Chan says about the dirty
contact is true. <<

I sure hope that's the case. My self timer ceased functioning many years ago
on my Super Program of nearly 18 years vintage. I also had the film counter
fail to reset when the camera was new but got that repaired under warranty.
The self timer problem only showed up well after the warranty period was over.

I just took the camera in for it's first ever CLA and asked if they could look
at the timer switch. I figured it's just an electrical contact which perhaps
is not making contact. Let's see if that pans out.

My package consists of the Super Program, MotorDrive-A, A50/1.7, A70-210/4 and
AF280T. I have M lenses (28/3.5 and 135/3.5) plus a K 45-125/4 (still one of
my favorite lenses). Just sold my A50/2.8 Macro, K24/2.8 and Kiron 80-200/4 on
eBay recently. Hoping to pick up an M200/4 soon.

Interesting old Pentax book found.

2001-03-12 Thread Matamoros, Cesar A.

As my travel continues in Utah, I stopped in a book store as I was
walking around taking photos. Of course I had to peruse the photo section,
talk about old books! I found an interesting small photo book with a
Honeywell Pentax on the cover.

PENTAX & SINGLE-LENS REFLEX PHOTOGRAPHY
by Robert Fuhring
Copyright 1962, Second Printing, February, 1963
American Photographic Book Publishing Company, Inc.
Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 62-12301

I have only gotten through the introduction the book is only 123
pages long. His emphasis is on the H-1 and H-3. The last three pages list
those two cameras with all sorts of lenses and accessories.

I quote from the introduction -
' I hope to show that with the Pentax you can tackle a broader range
of subject matter, at more reasonable cost, than with any other camera
system.'
  ...
'An unusual number of talented magazine and newpaper photographers
have come to use the new Pentaxes, and their reasons should also be reasons
why any serious photographer will want to consider this camera. Pentax
prices, downright modest in view of the quality and performance, also bring
the highest standards within reach of many more photographers.'

With that alone it seems to be that it may make for interesting
reading.

Anyone else come across this book?

Re: What do you shoot with 50mm? (was: FA 50mm f/1.4)

2001-03-12 Thread Steve Scott

I shot a whole roll of KodaColor 400 inside the USAF museum in Dayton,
OH in the early 80's. All of it was with my 50/1.4 and available
light. I was more than pleased with the results. I relied mostly with
the camera's meter. I don't remember if I used my K-1000 or MX. I
don't think I had an ME at the time. Especially stunning was their
stained glass window. I could capture a full static display without
cropping. Anything wider would have looked too busy. The 50 is
definitely your most versatile lens.

On Ebay they call them unused old stock. As far as I know there
is only one company in the world currently making flash bulbs.
There is/was supposed to be another one in China but I have
never found any information on them. Megaflash in Ireland does
not make FP rated bulbs as far as I know.

Now about that "unused" thing they are always saying on Ebay.
Maybe I could advertise, "Collector's special. Once used flash

Speed Graphic in a real Graflite flashgun by a actual
photographer. Bid early and bid high, these will go fast to
serious collectors.

Re: What do you shoot with 50mm? (was: FA 50mm f/1.4)

2001-03-12 Thread dosk

A ("normal") 50mm f1.4?? (Or f1.7, f1.8, f1.9, f2.0...)

I find a 50 ideal for those scenes that are "busy"; scenes that have a lot
in them (like city street scenes), where you might not want to use a WA lens
because the shot would then become cluttered.
IMO it's good for landscapes in that particular condensing way, but then
it's also excellent for expanded close-ups where you want close detail of a
subject (say, like a tree, or a store front, or a car,) but also want to get
the whole width of the subject in. And it does not distort perspective, like
the way many WA and telefoto lenses do.
Last Sunday I had to shoot quilted artwork on the walls of a church, as a
favor for a friend. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect lens than a
50/1.4 to do it!
It's also great for dim light scenes, both interior and exterior, where you
might want to keep the lighting soft and natural and not flattened out with
flash. (And nighttime street scenes are fantastic!)
It's not a telephoto and it's barely a WA, so it has neither's faults. A 50
is in between, and as such is extremely versatile. (And it can teach one a
great deal about composing.) So much so, that years ago many famous (and
non-famous) photographers thought nothing of going on a shoot with their SLR
equipped with ONLY a 50mm lens.
Also, with a good make 2x tele-converter, your 50/1.4 becomes a rather good
100/2.8. (And for not very much more money either.)

But, on the other hand, I must add that I myself like the 'prime' (means:
non-zoom)lenses for shorter ranges, and so intend to eventually also equip
myself with a 24mm or 28mm prime WA. (I already have a 2x TC, and a 50-175
tele zoom for the long end.)
And you yourself might not like to go this way; it's eventually a more
expensive system, and not one always as easy to use as, say, a 28-80mm zoom,
where you can get a lot of different focal lengths in play very quickly.
Just bear in mind that the zooms (generally speaking) are usually not quite
as sharp as the primes, and most do not come in versions faster than f3.5
unless you want to spend good $$ here also.
(And many of the now 'standard' size zooms, (in the 28-70 or 28-80
category,) have terrible ratings. Especially the Pentax's, sorry to say...)
But there are good 3rd party standard range zooms available too. Just check
the ratings before you buy...

I'm not trying to convince you of anything here. You have to figure out
yourself which way you want to go in photography. But IMO a good 50mm is a
good way to begin. (And keep in mind that if you ever do buy a lens you
don't like, in today's camera market (especially on e-bay) you can usually
get most of your money back on the re-sale of a good lens.)
Hope this helps...

Me Super Fixer?

2001-03-12 Thread Dave Weiss

Hello all;

I have been in contact with a guy named Klaus
Garcia who has offered to fix my Me Super for
what I consider to be a small sum. My Me Super
does not advance the film at first, and then,
after retrying about 50 times, it will advance it
every third time, then every other time, then
everytime. If it sits again for awhile, this
process must be done again. Anyhow, he seems
knowledgable. He says it is a "gummy mechanism
caused by breakdown of mirror charge arm return
damper."

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything good or
bad about him. If not, perhaps I will play guinea pig
for the list and let you know how it goes. He is from
California, btw.

Re: What do you shoot with 50mm? (was: FA 50mm f/1.4)

2001-03-12 Thread PAUL STENQUIST

I find that a 50mm lens is frequently a good choice to frame a
full-figure portrait, a small group of people or a street scene. (My
current PUG submission is a street scene that was shot with a 50.) The
50 works well for photographing some indoor activities. I've used it on
a couple of occasions to photograph billiard players. I sometimes use
the 50 for landscapes as well, but I do find that its "normal"
perspective can be a bit bland in this type of photography.

Hi Todd,
I've checked the meter with an old 1,5 volts battery - of the wrong type,
reverse mounted - that showed 1,3 volts remaining. I put the battery in the
compartment and hold the cap with a finger to allow the contact. It could
sound absurd but it works! The meter worked in the wrong way, of course (it
indicated the overexposure by pointing at the minus sign and vice versa) but
it should work fine if my little experiment didn't damage anything. :)
No pawn shop. There are some streets in Naples where a kind of "pavement
market" takes place. There are Chinese, Polish and sometimes Italian people
that sell various kind of stuff, i.e. cheap clothes, watches, fhishing rods
and so on. And, of course, used cameras and lenses; especially from Russia,
but there are often japanese cheap lenses. This Spotmatic comes from a guy I
know that has its own place in one of those streets (from the same guy I
bought a Zenitar 16mm fisheye in K mount years ago and last year a K-1000 with
a broken hotshoe, plus its 50/2, for 65 US$).

Hi Kelvin and all,
I should say "almost anything", because "anything" would be a lie, although
not far from the truth. I usually have with me the K-1000 with its 50/1.7,
plus a 28 and a 100 in the bag, but the 50mm usually is my first approach to a
subject (often the only approach). Every time I have to shoot in available
light and/or I prefer to bring only a lens, the 50mm is my choice. I like it
for full/half size (lenght?) portrait too (not only head, of course).

Once a girl asked me the same question, and my answer was almost like this: "I
take pictures of things, events and persons that touch me".
It happened seven years ago.
I'm not sure if the same question would move me to the same answer now. I
still take that kind of pictures, and they usually are among my best shots,
but I probably wouldn't answer in the same way.
Now that I am a professional photographer I shoot lots of pictures of subjects
I like, and lots of subjects I don't like. What I like is architecture and
portraiture, what I dislike... everything that doesn't bring me to learn more
and improve my skills.
My personal commitment is to take a different look at the city of Naples and
its urban life, so the most part of my pictures are urban shots. Another work
in progress concerns the life in the universities of Naples, that dates from
the late eighties.

Why? I haven't the faintest idea.

Definately too short.
A 100mm to 120mm lens is MUCH better suited for portrait work.
Especially head shots. Using a 50mm for headshots is futile
and will result in very unflattering views of the subject.

New Tamron zoom

2001-03-12 Thread Joseph Tainter

You might want to consider the old FA Power Zoom 28-105/f4-5.6. It's
heavy (with relatively useless power zoom that you can turn off), but is
also a sharp lens in its class and quite highly regarded. It was
designed for the 1p. This is the standard lens on my 1p. I don't know if
it's still being produced, but a few calls should tell you it any are
available new. If not, try KEH.

I'll be looking closely at reviews to see how the new FA 28-105 and FA
24-90 compare to this old workhorse.

Another fairly good choice (sharper than most consumer 28-105s) is the
Tokina 28-105/f3.5-4.5. It's a solid piece of glass and metal, but is
out of production. Might still be available. Lacks macro capability.

Hi Dave,

This may in fact be the key, consider how many pro-shooters may use P67
or P645 but not have any P35mm gear, this is an ideal opportunity to sell the
Pentax 35mm system to pros. Once you have a digital body that you can
use on your 645 or 67 lenses I am sure you would buy at least a couple of
35mm lenses to use with the digital body alone? Then maybe a 35mm film
camera, then maybe some more 35mm lenses

Hi,
I've got one too, and it's a good flash unit. But I got mine on ebay for
$40, I think.

Also, I liked mine so much, I bid on another one, and got it for $45.
When it got to me, it was DOA. I knew the seller, and knew he hadn't
sold me a broken one. Anyway, I got my money back. About 3 months later,
another 630 AF appeared on Ebay. I bid on it and got it. $39 for this
one. And believe it or not, this one got to me dead too! (different
seller). I had a bit of trouble getting my money back on the second one,
but eventually, I had a refund.

These two episodes led me to conclude: Though it's a fine unit, it
apparently has some fragile electronics. Even though my original unit
has not given me any trouble, my experience is enough to give me pause
about having one shipped to me. Perhaps you can get yours without
subjecting it to the rigors of a shipping co. like UPS or USPS.

Good luck. But I do think $50 is just a tiny bit too much.

Sid

My first Spotmatic... and a question

2001-03-12 Thread Gianfranco Irlanda

Hi everybody,

This afternoon, while heading home, I've been attracted by a "bargain"
Spotmatic SP offered at a very nice price. The camera had some corrosion on
the top and around the mount. It worked fine, though (I couldn't test the
meter - dead battery) and had its original case (in very good shape) and a
Super Takumar 50/1.4. The seller asked me 48 US$ for it. The last two
Spotmatics (F?) I saw around here went for something like 180 US$ (one LINB,
the other had a kind of sticky mirror problem) so I bought the SP on the
spot.
Back home I started to clean the camera and - surprise! - the corrosion was
superficial only. Only between the pentaprism and the speed knob the surface
still looks mat and shows some wear.
Now the SP looks good and I think it has been barely used for a very long time
(it shows no brassing, scratches or dents of any kind). The lens is the
cleanest I've ever seen (now I understand why so many people still loves the
old screwmount Pentax lenses) :)
Now the question: how does the Super-Takumar 50/1.4 compares to the K, KM and
F/FA versions? It's the second version (seven elements in six groups).
Thanks in advance.

Gianfranco

PS. Er, Albano? Please add an SP.

Carl·Zeiss·Jena·lenses:·Are·they·"real"·K·mounts?

2001-03-12 Thread Paul . Stregevsky

My thanks to Gabor, Jens, and Evan for clarifying the mount arrangement in
CZJ lenses. Because of my aversion to dimmed viewfinders, I no longer
regret that I recently missed picking up a "K-mount" CZJ 20/2.8 for $200 by
a few hours.

But Gabor also wrote:

Some old teles (2.8/120, 2.8/180) are a bit different, they were
designed for use on 35mm and MF as well, and the mount can be changed
easyly.

Is the 180/2.8, then, a true K mount, with full metering?

PS: Anyone who would like to read collected comments or current sourcces
for the Jena 20/2.8, 25/4, or 180/2.8, write to me. A Swedish dealer (
http://home6.swipnet.se/~w-60531/) currently lists a K-mount CZJ 24/2.8 MC
(multicoated) Macro in grade A for 2000 Swedish kroenig (about $202); the
24/2.8 is described as "extremely rare" on a Practika site (

Apparently the last Nikon rangefinders were the special batch of 2000 units of S3 in

I would say the Tamron's got the "right" way focus direction. All my old
lenses (the lenses which made SLR concept - Exakta lenses. Granddads of all
SLR lenses ) turn the way as Tamron (and opposite the way of F 1.4/50).
So I am used to the Tamron's :o)

*** My reply to Ralf:
Unfortunately, Tamron's SP series is not so good now as it used to be. I
wouldn't rate it "FA* so to say". Normal Tamron zooms are cheapish consumer
zooms, while the SP series has the pro lenses, but similar to other
third-party's pro lenses. I think the * Pentax lenses are all somewhat over
that level :)
To be honest, Tamron made great lenses in the SP series, but they chose to
discontinue most of them, for strange reasons...
All IMHO, of course.

And the SP 24-135 is propably be a big flare-prone lens. At least the
Pentax 24-x has Ghostless coating (or not?). My 35-105/2.8 SP certainly
flares, although not worse than other 2.8 zooms.

expensive. The magazine reviews here are very positive. Note that the
SP series is Tamrons high end series (FA* so to say). Unfortunately the

Nick, in my experience and from what I heard, such super-zooms are
generally not much good. I have Tamron SP 2.8/35-105, and I like it, even
for big prints (well stopped down,of course!), although it has lots of
colour fringing in the corners. The newer, "better" version was SP
2.8/28-105, which by all reviews sucks - even more fringing, etc... Newer
is not always better. I would guess the 24-135 SP be even worse. And for
the price of it, you can propably buy two 2.8 zooms from Tokina (for
example, 28-105/2.8 costs ~40 000 Kc /1000$/ here. A Tokina or Sigma
2.8/28-70 zoom costs from 15 000-20 000 Kc! And both are considered way
better than the 28-105/2.8).

But if you are simply looking for an universal lens to produce 4x6" prints
and not much more, any quality zoom will be be ok. But maybe the new Tamron
is really good, some 24-x zooms are considered to be very good (e.g. the
Nikon's 24-120/3.5-5.6), although I still think a zoom that's 5.6 WIDE OPEN
at long end simply sucks because my zoom is already STOPPED DOWN 2 STOPS at
5.6 - while my zoom's quality at 2.8 maybe sucked, at 5.6 it outperforms
the Nikon anytime (and at f/4 it outperforms it by a full stop :)

Sorry I couldn't help you much with the _actual_ quality of that new
Tamron, but I just wanted to tell you that a 2.8/28-70 from Sigma or Tokina
or an used 2.8/35-105 Tamron might be a lot better, and propably at least
1.5x cheaper. (the SP 2.8/28-105 Tamron started to retail around 800$ in
the US I think). There are still some relatively cheap 24mm primes (e.g.
the Sigma 1.8/24, told to be cheaper by 100$ than the Pentax one), or
~20-35 zooms to complement a 28-70 lens.

Hi Brent,

The combination of ASA 100 film speed setting and B shutter setting is
actually the battery test position. At this setting, the meter is supposed
to peg full-scale positive if your battery is good.

Re: Which one?

2001-03-12 Thread Steve Scott

Many years ago I purchased a Tamron (I believe) 500 mirror for my M series bodies and
K-1000. There was noticable loss of sharpess but contrast really took the big hit.
It eventually was stolen from my car while
on a trip (along with a Vivitar 283 flash and SMC-M 135/3.5 lens). I replaced the
flash and the 135 but not the mirror lens.

I don't think the mirrors can compare image-wise to the optical tele's but the optical
lens can't compare to the mirror in price. If you need a long lens at an affordable
price, by all means try one.

I've got one shot with the 500 mirror on my web site:

People ... I love working with all sorts of people in many types of
environments. Kids are great, especially when I can capture the
relationship between kids and their parents. I love catching a hug
or a kiss, a touch or a glance, or some other indication of
closeness and the love and bond between parent and child.

I like working with street people - shooting the street is an
exhilarating experience, and sometime challenging in that it's often
difficult to get close to people who don't want to be observed or
have an intrusion in their lives.

The idea of documenting the relationship of people to what's
happening in their lives, the joys and the sadness, loneliness and
camaraderie, silliness and seriousness, has always interested me,
and going back through old negatives and prints it seems that my
best work has been with people. People and Pentax - a winning
combination!

Yeh, I realize I'm probably wrong now (Head hung ashamed) and that Tom R.
was being funny. Where I came from an A was anything between 90 - 100. If
the teacher was particularly impressed by some ungradeable aspect of the
paper you got an A+. It's likely the original poster was not rating things
by the technical ratings though, probably just trying to get across it was
in very very good shape.

Re[2]: Ghostless coating: which lenses have it?

Hi Boz,

I confirmed it with Pentax Lenses catalogue as of June 2000.
It says "Two aspherical lenses, glass mold and hybrid, are
adopted. Various technologies such as floating zoom and
GHOSTLESS COATING enable this lens to perform very well at
all focal length and perspective."

Re: FA 50mm f/1.4

2001-03-12 Thread dosk

Yes. Although the DOF, [the part of the picture available just in front of,
or just behind, the focused upon subject] is greatly limited as far as what
one can include in a close-up f1.4 shot.
But this is true with every fast, wide open lens...
And at least the FA 50/1.4 focuses sharp as a tack [at every aperture, tho
some better than others, naturally] on whatever subject matter is included.
And can do so w/o flash, and in very dim light!
I have it, and it always goes wherever my SLR goes...
A must for outdoor night scenes, and interiors in available light!
A fantastic lens!

Yep, it will be very competitive in a tiny market for a short period.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not knocking it. I think it's a terrific
attention grabber for the Pentax system as a whole, but I don't think
it'll sell in any kind of useful quantities. Probably not any more
than the others do.

If you look at the press release, they make a big play over the fact
that you can use 6x7 and 645 lenses on it. Not news to serious
pentaxians, but the kind of thing which might grab the attention of
someone used to a different system.

I think Pentax are using it to reinforce their hi-tech, precision
instrument image. Unfortunately, they only seem to have this image in
Japan.

The digital market is changing so fast that any of the new crop of
megapixel cameras will be out of date within a year or two anyway.
It's those companies which will allow you to upgrade your body and
keep your lens system who'll survive.

local contrast differ from overall contrast? I'm quite

Really? I was just looking at my wife's old Kodak. She lost out on the
opportunity to sell it back to Kodak for the settlement price of $50 so
it's been sitting on our shelf for 15 years. Still has a pack of film
for it!!! And the original box. Or like, in 1982, when a guy offered
to buy my Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 1 with Level 2 basic and 16kb RAM for
$500. I wound letting it go for $50 in 1987 just to get rid of it.

Re: 28-105 powerzoom vs 28-70/4

2001-03-12 Thread Mark Stringer

I own both and like both. When I bought a camera for my daughter I gave her
the 28-70 because my instincts (and photos) indicated that I had more
confidence in the 28-105. However, the28-105 is heavier, larger and I
have recently bought another 28-70. I like the 28-70 on my ZX5n w/o battery
pack, a very light combo for family shooting or walking around. However, I
also am gravitating back to primes for speed and quality.

Re: Price of F* 300/4.5 ?

2001-03-12 Thread Mark Stringer

I bought mine about a year ago for $565. It is the most exciting thing I
have done in 35mm photography. Imagine a 300mm lens that gives results like
shooting with a 50mm lens. I almost wept on seeing the first pictures I
took. I couldn't believe the sharpness. I will always have a Pentax camera
and this lens. I want more lens like this. I could give up 6x7 if I had a
bag of lens that took pictures this good. BTW, I use the tripod collar a
lot (i.e. remote taking pictures of hummingbirds at a feeder. How else would
you do this?)
