ClockWorks - Bill Peifer There have been occasions where I have shown my wife a photo that I have taken to get her impression and she says What's that?. Obviously, since I took the photo, I know exactly what it is. But for her, she has no idea, because it is an unfamiliar subject. Bill's Clockworks has the same effect on me. Without the title and explanation, I would really be lost trying to figure out just exactly what I am looking at. Ironically, my wife know what it was at first glance before seeing the title. I have looked at this image for awhile and it is just too abstract feeling for me. It comes across as more of a study shot while working with the equipment and lighting and experimenting with the subject. I must say that the flash worked out pretty well, in not blowing out those reflective surfaces. Bruce Dayton - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Berries - William Robb There are some things that work for me here and some things that don't work quite as well. Things I like - The strong colors - the reds, greens and blues work together to make the berries really stand out. DOF - Good compromise between bringing the berries to our attention but not blurring the background so badly as to not recognize general shapes and patterns. Things I don't like - The subject it too dead center. I'm not quite sure how to describe it, but it feels like there should be something else to help accentuate the subject - positioning, size or something. There is a distracting dark vertical object on the right side that I notice too much. All that said, I like the image. It is something that I would enjoy working with. I don't have any ivy or berries around like that. Many times these common items go unnoticed. William has exhibited an awareness of his surroundings that will net him many fine photos. Re: C41 film for bright conditions?
Hi, I believe, (but I'm not sure though, could be a howler of an urban myth), that certain film companies (I think its Kodak, not sure about Fuji)produces file with different specs for the Australian market, due to the different light there. If this were true, perhaps its better to purchase it there? Michele --- Hi, I am after a C41 film to use on a holiday next month, in 100 and 400iso. Since its summer in Australia it should be pretty bright and contrasty conditions. So a larging lattitude would help. Any reccomendations for a film for this sort of situation? I have been shooting Supra, but find when its shot in bright light it tends to blow out lighter colours. Any one else noticed this? Would adjusting the ISO make any difference to this? Winder LX and frame counter
Yeah, the Motor Drive MX has this feature. Pain in the bum it was - I just reset it to squeeze out anything left on the roll. Fine if I was shooting B+W and processing it myself, but obviously not advised for shop processing, unless you're not bothered about possibly losing anything after 36... Cotty Has anyone noticed the LX equiped with winder stops at frame 36? It happens regardless of if there is film in the camera or not. Mine is doing this and the winder won't work beyond 36 . . . . . . It doesn't concern me too much, as I don't shoot rolls over 36, but if I roll my own more than 36 .. . . Michele, That certainly sounds like an urban myth. Re: 6x7 lens search
I'd go for the 150/2.8 from KEH (don't know about performance though). I was in the same situation, bought a body off of Ebay, then looked for a lens. Couldn't take the waiting any longer and finally had a 105mm overnighted to me from KEH... Norm Paul Stenquist wrote: Okay, so I can't just leave the 6x7 on the shelf. I've been shopping for a lens for, oh, 24 hours now, and my patience is wearing thin. I gave up on a 90/2,8 when I couldn't meet the reserve at $250. I passed on a 105/2.4 with a scratch on the front element and a $160 minimum bid. And then I started thinking that I might want my first lens for this beast to be more of a portrait lens than a normal lens. A 150/2.8 showed up on ebay, but the buy it now was $399. The reserve is probably close to that. Finally, I turned to KEH. I love the idea of the 165 leaf shutter lens, but prices are in the six to seven hundred dollar range. But they have an excellent 150/2.8 for $284. That sounds like a rather good deal. What say you, oh list members? - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Which Printer to Buy?
Hi, Have the results come in from the PDML printer showdown? maybe i just missed them. I'm proably going to buy an Inkjet this weekend. The ones i'm looking at are a Canon S600, Canon S800 and Epson 980. Is there other I should be looking at? Has any one got any opinions on these? As yet i'm unable to see any real difference between the S600 and S800 except for speed. The 980 is an A4 version of the 1270 or 1280 isnt it? I dont need a printer that prints more than A4 size as my scanner wont scan at a high enough res to go that big. Any comments appreciated. I think they're called Rules in Outlook. Check under the Action menu when you open an email from the PDML. There should be an option for creating a rule. You can either follow the prompts if they feel sensible or wing it, but what you want to end up with is a rule which filters everything from [EMAIL PROTECTED] into a separate folder. *ALL* mail from the PDML will have the same To: address or the same Reply-to: address. Use these to filter it. Really, you should learn to use rules of this kind to filter as much of your email as possible, especially if much of it is routine 'general office info'. In my last company, I had a set of rules which put all the 'sent to everyone' stuff in one folder, the virus alerts in another, anything sent from personal friends in a third, the corporate newsletter in another, etc, and only stuff sent specifically to me landed in my inbox. This cuts down on the interruptions due to email tremendously, as you know that the only things which are for your explicit and personal attention are those things which are either from your friends or those things which are for you personally. Your mail-thingy goes You've got mail! and you can just flick to it with alt-tab and see if it's just routine stuff or sent to you personally. dave - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. S800 has 6 ink tanks instead of 4 so it can have the regular and 2 photo ink cartridges in and in use at the same time. It should increase the range of reproducible colors. On 20 Dec 2001, Johan Schoone wrote: There are mailing lists where it is common practice to do this. I know of at least one newsgroup (alt.fan.pratchett) where it is good manners to identify whether your posting is Relevant, Irrelevant, Meta, Annotation, Games-related or Fandom-related by a tag (RIMAGF) respectively, and this helps tremendously with filtering. That newsgroup is *insanely* high traffic, however (or was the last time I put up with it) and ninja filters were the only way to deal with it. This message, for example, would be [M] for Meta, in that it refers to the technical aspects of reading the list. Something about Pentax would be [R] for Relevant, etc. Folks here are generally pretty good with OT, or FS for Off-Topic or For-Sale, however, so you could filter on that, if you want. Personally, I keep a few folders for this mailing list: pentax.active recent email send from the list to the list pentax.adminemail sent to me from people on the list pentax.archive old email chucked in here when it's a month old pentax.bozo people I couldn't be bothered reading. (The archiving stuff is a little esoteric - I have (or will, when I polish them up a little) some scripts which move everything over about a month old into a separate folder. I think Outlook can do this too, although it might want to archive everything, not just one folder.) Some folks also consider it useful to filter on people whose ideas or emails you don't want to read or whose postings make you want to argue with them. Especially those prone to off topic ranting. I think you're looking not for a film with more latitude but instead for one with lower contrast -- latitude is more like information held in the neg beyond the upper and lower limits of the paper to display that information when printed, and contrast is more like how much of that information gets to the paper. I'd recommend something like Fuji or Kodak's pro portrait films -- Fuji NPS 160 and NPH 400, or Kodak Portra 160NC and 400NC (but the Kodak Portra VCs are more contrasty, so you don't want 'em, likewise Fuji's NPC and Reala). For the ultimate in low contrast colour neg film, you can pick up some Agfa Portrait, but under most normal shooting conditions I find it too flat. -Aaron - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. If you're a fan of Kodak's Portra VC films, give a roll of Fuji NPC a try. Very high saturation, good skin tones, very fine grain. Re: Suggestions welcome...
Kristian, Where I am, I have found that the cost of print film is cheaper than slide film ($4 vs $5). The cost of develop-only C41 is cheaper than slide film ($2.30 vs $6.50). The net difference per roll is about $5.00. I also have better luck scanning negatives than slides. It seems that you need a bigger D-range in your scanner to really do slides well. So my general operation is to shoot Fuji Reala, Konica Impressa 50, Kodak Supra Portra and have develop-only done. Then scan (Minolta Scan Dual II) and print those I really want. Far cheaper than getting all those prints at the local lab. Without the manual, I would not have known that this means that instead of going f2.8, f3.5, f4, etc as most lenses do, the SMC-M 28mm f2.8 goes from f2.8 directly to f4 with no half stop between. I make a lot of 11 x16 prints and a lot of 7 x 10. (I use an Epson 1200. It's great, so are the newer Epsons, the latest of which is the 1280.) I got the AF Macro version of this lens earlier this week. I haven't shot any film with it yet, but I like what I've seen in the playing around I've been doing after work. I start Christmas holidays tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a chance to take it out and play with it in the coming days. I hope that the combination of APO and Macro features lead to a lens that's at least as sharp as my SMC-K 400/5.6 (which seems to me to be sharper than my Tokina SD 400/5.6 PK-A). Even if the K is actually sharper, I may get more good shots with the AF Sigma, if I can get my panning and AF technique refined. It's handy that it uses the same filter size as the K 400/5.6 (77mm). The build quality feels fine to me. I like the built in hood, but mine is a little tough to extend and retract. That will probably ease with use. There's none of the whirring that some folks (including me) object to in some of the AF lenses when focused manually. (I wonder if that's related to the fact that there's an HSM version of the lens?) It has an MF/AF clutch so you're not driving the camera's motor around when manually focusing the lens and the body is in AF mode. Clutching to MF and leaving the camera body in AF gives you the same snap in focus behavior you can get with the K, M, and A Pentax lenses. Apparently clutching to MF changes the values the lens presents to the contacts in the mount. I _really_ like the tripod collar and foot on this lens. I especially like that it's easily removable, can be reversed to move the CG around, and has index lines for both landscape and portrait orientations so I don't have to use a plumb bob and a spirit level. :-) On the who needs a manual front, I'd probably never have figured out how to remove the tripod collar without the manual or a lot of dumb luck. :-) The macro goes to 1:3, meaning a 1.6m closest focus. Quite a pleasant change from the 3m or 4m close focus of the K 400/5.6 and Tokina SD 400/5.6 manual focus lenses. I do not find the viewfinder to be particularly dark, but that's probably because I do quite a bit of shooting with 200/4 and 400/5.6 lenses ... and those lenses with one or two 2X-S T/Cs behind them. It autofocuses faster on my ZX-5 than I would have expected. It does tend to micro hunt a little in bad lighting, though. What I mean is that it quickly homes in on the focal distance of the subject, then hunts back and forth in very small increments on either side of the subject a couple or four times. Both of these effects are probably related to the relatively short end-to-end throw of the focusing ring and mechanism. I'll let you all know what I find optically when I do some shooting with it. Re: OT - Voigtlander Bessa LR (but I mention ME Super)
Frank, I own the Bessa L (no rangefinder/needs an lens-specific viewfinder) with the Snapshot Skopar 25mm f4. True, the body is plasticky, but the lens is worth the price of the whole kit. I'll get the 15mm eventually. In terms of shutter noise, I don't think the camera was ever intended on being Leica-like, only Leica-ready. My ME Super is probably as quiet, maybe more so. But it is a funky camera, good for a conversation whenever it goes out, and not threatening as an SLR might be (as it is just plain goofy looking to the general population). Hi, Chris, Thanks for your thoughts and input. I didn't mean to imply that these were Leica-like, especially given their prices. They look and sound like very cool little cameras. I simply mentioned that they were plastic, because I had originally received wrong information that they had metal bodies. It would be nice, but at those prices something has to give... I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for one (an R, I think). thanks, frank Chris Niesmertelny wrote: Frank, I own the Bessa L (no rangefinder/needs an lens-specific viewfinder) with the Snapshot Skopar 25mm f4. Re: Handstrap for ZX- bodies?
Camcorder. One of those small video cameras that record on 8mm or compact video tape. Many of them have a short, semi-rigid padded strap on the side. You slide your hand in between the camera body and the strap, palm against the side of the camera, finger tips on the controls, and the padded strap covers the back of your hand. Makes it very easy to handle and hang on to the camera, and hard to drop it. A regular wrist strap would probably be an improvement over the neck/sholder strap, too. It would be very uneven lighting. You'd have to have two flashes, and you'd still have some nasty reflections, Your best bet is to use the lighting in the show area and adjust your filtration accordingly. It's very difficult to light a car for flash photography. The studio photogs use giant heavily diffused light boxes hung from the ceiling of a big studio. The boxes have to be positioned just so to achieve acceptable highlights, and they have to be augmented with various reflectors and flags. It's like trying to take a picture of a mirror. Use the available light. Forget about the flash. Second, I'd like to put out a couple of other requests for used items; hopefully someone out there can help me with them as well. The next item I'd like to get for my kit is the Grip Strap for the pz1p. Anyone have one? Also, in the next 1-3 months I will be adding a FA* 80-200/2.8 to my kit. My 80-200/4 is one of my most used lenses and I fear that it is slowly but surely deteriorating. Most of my shots with this lens now have a very distinct green cast, even in good sunlight. And it also reads at least two stops under any of my other lenses when set to f4. So getting a high quality 80-200/2.8 will be a high priority for me. Hopefully, Mr. IRS can help me along those lines. ;) Anyway, if anyone has one of those lenses that they'd like to unload; or if someone sees one for a good price. Please let me know. Of course, please reply privately. [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks!!! Nick - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Pop Photo Winners
I loved the Creative/fine art Second prize that went to the landscape with the oak tree. Looks just like a california Plein Aire painting to me! Beautiful! Gives me lots of ideas... Oh, and It was taken with an LX ...(what else?) ;-} Brnedan - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: PUG confirmation?
I must point out that it is just today the cutoff for the next gallery, and I am sure that Adelheid needs a day or two to make the thumbnails, set up the index page, check the links, make sure the extensions are small case, and all the other little things that need to be done prior to having a working gallery.
