ClockWorks - Bill Peifer

There have been occasions where I have shown my wife a photo that I
have taken to get her impression and she says What's that?.
Obviously, since I took the photo, I know exactly what it is. But for
her, she has no idea, because it is an unfamiliar subject. Bill's
Clockworks has the same effect on me. Without the title and
explanation, I would really be lost trying to figure out just exactly
what I am looking at. Ironically, my wife know what it was at first
glance before seeing the title.

I have looked at this image for awhile and it is just too abstract
feeling for me. It comes across as more of a study shot while working
with the equipment and lighting and experimenting with the subject. I
must say that the flash worked out pretty well, in not blowing out
those reflective surfaces.

Berries - William Robb

There are some things that work for me here and some things that don't
work quite as well.

Things I like - The strong colors - the reds, greens and blues work
together to make the berries really stand out. DOF - Good compromise
between bringing the berries to our attention but not blurring the
background so badly as to not recognize general shapes and patterns.

Things I don't like - The subject it too dead center. I'm not quite
sure how to describe it, but it feels like there should be something
else to help accentuate the subject - positioning, size or something.
There is a distracting dark vertical object on the right side that I
notice too much.

All that said, I like the image. It is something that I would enjoy
working with. I don't have any ivy or berries around like that. Many
times these common items go unnoticed. William has exhibited an
awareness of his surroundings that will net him many fine photos.

Winder LX and frame counter

2001-12-20 Thread Cotty

Yeah, the Motor Drive MX has this feature. Pain in the bum it was - I
just reset it to squeeze out anything left on the roll. Fine if I was
shooting B+W and processing it myself, but obviously not advised for shop
processing, unless you're not bothered about possibly losing anything
after 36...

Cotty

Has anyone noticed the LX equiped with winder stops at frame 36? It
happens regardless of if there is film in the camera or not. Mine is
doing this and the winder won't work beyond 36 . . .

   . . . It doesn't concern me too much, as I don't shoot rolls over 36,
but if I roll my own more than 36 .. . .

I'd go for the 150/2.8 from KEH (don't know about performance though). I was

Couldn't take the waiting any longer and finally had a 105mm overnighted to

105/2.4 with a scratch on the front element and a $160 minimum bid. And
then I started thinking that I might want my first lens for this beast
to be more of a portrait lens than a normal lens. A 150/2.8 showed up on
ebay, but the buy it now was $399. The reserve is probably close to
that. Finally, I turned to KEH. I love the idea of the 165 leaf shutter
lens, but prices are in the six to seven hundred dollar range. But they
have an excellent 150/2.8 for $284. That sounds like a rather good
deal. What say you, oh list members?

Which Printer to Buy?

2001-12-20 Thread Paul Jones

Hi,

Have the results come in from the PDML printer showdown? maybe i just missed
them.

I'm proably going to buy an Inkjet this weekend. The ones i'm looking at are
a Canon S600, Canon S800 and Epson 980. Is there other I should be looking
at? Has any one got any opinions on these?

As yet i'm unable to see any real difference between the S600 and S800
except for speed.

The 980 is an A4 version of the 1270 or 1280 isnt it?

I dont need a printer that prints more than A4 size as my scanner wont scan
at a high enough res to go that big.

Any comments appreciated.

 would help me a lot...

You use Outlook which, despite its many shortcomings, does have a
relatively decent set of filters. I think they're called Rules in
Outlook.

Check under the Action menu when you open an email from the PDML. There
should be an option for creating a rule. You can either follow the
prompts if they feel sensible or wing it, but what you want to end up with
is a rule which filters everything from [EMAIL PROTECTED] into a
separate folder. *ALL* mail from the PDML will have the same To: address
or the same Reply-to: address. Use these to filter it.

Really, you should learn to use rules of this kind to filter as much of
your email as possible, especially if much of it is routine 'general
office info'. In my last company, I had a set of rules which put all the
'sent to everyone' stuff in one folder, the virus alerts in another,
anything sent from personal friends in a third, the corporate newsletter
in another, etc, and only stuff sent specifically to me landed in my
inbox.

This cuts down on the interruptions due to email tremendously, as you know
that the only things which are for your explicit and personal attention
are those things which are either from your friends or those things which
are for you personally. Your mail-thingy goes You've got mail! and you
can just flick to it with alt-tab and see if it's just routine stuff or
sent to you personally.

There are mailing lists where it is common practice to do this.

I know of at least one newsgroup (alt.fan.pratchett) where it is good

respectively, and this helps tremendously with filtering. That newsgroup
is *insanely* high traffic, however (or was the last time I put up with
it) and ninja filters were the only way to deal with it.

This message, for example, would be [M] for Meta, in that it refers to the
technical aspects of reading the list. Something about Pentax would be
[R] for Relevant, etc.

Folks here are generally pretty good with OT, or FS for Off-Topic or
For-Sale, however, so you could filter on that, if you want. Personally,
I keep a few folders for this mailing list:

pentax.active recent email send from the list to the list
pentax.adminemail sent to me from people on the list
pentax.archive old email chucked in here when it's a month old
pentax.bozo people I couldn't be bothered reading.

(The archiving stuff is a little esoteric - I have (or will, when I polish
them up a little) some scripts which move everything over about a month
old into a separate folder. I think Outlook can do this too, although it
might want to archive everything, not just one folder.)

Some folks also consider it useful to filter on people whose ideas or
emails you don't want to read or whose postings make you want to argue
with them. Especially those prone to off topic ranting.

 Mail folders are your friends.

Yep, or at least filters are.

I think you're looking not for a film with more latitude but instead for
one with lower contrast -- latitude is more like information held in the
neg beyond the upper and lower limits of the paper to display that
information when printed, and contrast is more like how much of that
information gets to the paper.

I'd recommend something like Fuji or Kodak's pro portrait films -- Fuji
NPS 160 and NPH 400, or Kodak Portra 160NC and 400NC (but the Kodak
Portra VCs are more contrasty, so you don't want 'em, likewise Fuji's
NPC and Reala). For the ultimate in low contrast colour neg film, you
can pick up some Agfa Portrait, but under most normal shooting
conditions I find it too flat.

Did you push the film a stop during processing when rated at ISO 200?

Yes, I asked the lab for a one-stop push. A very knowledgeable fellow at
this lab told me he once shot some E100VS at ISO 800 with a three-stop
push, to shoot a concert. He said the results, including black areas,
were quite good. I haven't tried this.

Re: Suggestions welcome...

2001-12-20 Thread Bruce Dayton

Kristian,

Where I am, I have found that the cost of print film is cheaper than
slide film ($4 vs $5). The cost of develop-only C41 is cheaper than
slide film ($2.30 vs $6.50). The net difference per roll is about
$5.00. I also have better luck scanning negatives than slides. It
seems that you need a bigger D-range in your scanner to really do
slides well.

So my general operation is to shoot Fuji Reala, Konica Impressa 50,
Kodak Supra Portra and have develop-only done. Then scan (Minolta
Scan Dual II) and print those I really want. Far cheaper than getting
all those prints at the local lab.

My SMC-M 28mm f2.8 has a solid dot rather than the f-stop at the second
position from wide open on the aperture ring. Without the manual, I
would not have known that this means that instead of going f2.8, f3.5,
f4, etc as most lenses do, the SMC-M 28mm f2.8 goes from f2.8 directly
to f4 with no half stop between.

Use of the FA lenses with power zoom/zoom clip features also requires a
manual.

Hey guys...

Does anyone else shoot this film? I love it. I've read the NC has better skin tones
but I'm not sure...

I noticed it does well with falsh photography. Just fast enough. I used it over
Thanksgiving in my LX ;-)with the Pentax-A 28-135 f4 zoom (LX on AUTO, lens at f5.6 -
f8), Vivitar 283 flash (hotrodded with the metal mount + PC socket and test button)
mounted on Stroboframe.

I found many of the pix were very, very sharp at 4 x 6. Color was beautiful, vivid
may be too strong a word. Perhaps compared to the NC version, yes, but in general,
probably not. But, that's just me.

I've learned a local Photography class is tought using this film exclusively for its
color film.

That's what I do. I got tired of trying to store stacks of 4x6 prints

best ones, and print them on an inkjet. I make a lot of 11 x16 prints

Epsons, the latest of which is the 1280.) I have access to a great
scanner at work (an Agfa Duoscan 2500T), so I don't have a good film
scanner at home. If the use of the scanner at work ever becomes a
problem, I'll get a Nikon film scanner. I still do BW darkroom work. BW
negatives scan rather well, but you really need a dedicated BW printer
with special inks and software to print them nicely. Hope it works out

Someone asked a simular question a short while ago. I didn't see an answer,
so I will comment.

Here in the Charlotte, NC, USA area ME Supers seem to go for $125-150US in
the local camera stores. A M50/1.4 goes for cera $75. Together there is
usually a $25 or so discount. I have no idea what the Vivitar Zoom is worth,
not much I would imagine. Of course, prices will vary depending on where you
are located, demand, and availabiliy. Your local prices do seem fair enough.

One of the many strange things the power zoom lenses can do on a body

in the viewfinder as it moved, zoom during exposure for a tunnel-y

Hi, tom, Bob and Paul,

Thanks for your responses. I surfed around the web a bit last night, and
much of what you three said was confirmed in various reviews.

Turns out the body's plastic (a camera shop selling them steered me wrong).
They also seem to have variable quality from sample to sample, as some have
found them quite noisy for a rangefinder, while others haven't.

And the lenses have been almost universally praised (plus, I guess, you can
stick old Leica screwmounts on them if you want/can afford to).

I've seen them for not too much on eBay, but from the sounds of it, I'll
want to hold one in my hands before I buy, or at least get a money back
warranty if I buy on on-line - on second thought, that might be a PIA...

Anyway, it seems like an interesting camera. Thanks again to all who
responded.

frank

I'm not sure exactly what it does, but it does change the colors a
little bit. I mainly notice it in a slight lightening of any dark
colors in the image. But the effect is small and unobtrusive, so I
usually don't bother correcting it. If necessary, a small shot of
contrast and/or brightness (darkness actually) will get it back after
conversion back to RGB. The intersection of the RGB and CMYK color
spaces is definitely smaller than either of them (they don't perfectly
overlap).

I also picked up a Sigma 400 5.6 APO for kicks, although it is so

I got the AF Macro version of this lens earlier this week. I haven't
shot any film with it yet, but I like what I've seen in the playing
around I've been doing after work. I start Christmas holidays
tomorrow, so hopefully I'll get a chance to take it out and play with
it in the coming days.

I hope that the combination of APO and Macro features lead to a lens
that's at least as sharp as my SMC-K 400/5.6 (which seems to me to be
sharper than my Tokina SD 400/5.6 PK-A). Even if the K is actually
sharper, I may get more good shots with the AF Sigma, if I can get my
panning and AF technique refined.

It's handy that it uses the same filter size as the K 400/5.6 (77mm).

The build quality feels fine to me.

I like the built in hood, but mine is a little tough to extend and
retract. That will probably ease with use.

There's none of the whirring that some folks (including me) object to
in some of the AF lenses when focused manually. (I wonder if that's
related to the fact that there's an HSM version of the lens?)

It has an MF/AF clutch so you're not driving the camera's motor around
when manually focusing the lens and the body is in AF mode. Clutching
to MF and leaving the camera body in AF gives you the same snap in
focus behavior you can get with the K, M, and A Pentax lenses.
Apparently clutching to MF changes the values the lens presents to the
contacts in the mount.

I _really_ like the tripod collar and foot on this lens. I especially
like that it's easily removable, can be reversed to move the CG around,
and has index lines for both landscape and portrait orientations so I
don't have to use a plumb bob and a spirit level. :-) On the who needs
a manual front, I'd probably never have figured out how to remove the
tripod collar without the manual or a lot of dumb luck. :-)

The macro goes to 1:3, meaning a 1.6m closest focus. Quite a pleasant
change from the 3m or 4m close focus of the K 400/5.6 and Tokina SD
400/5.6 manual focus lenses.

I do not find the viewfinder to be particularly dark, but that's
probably because I do quite a bit of shooting with 200/4 and 400/5.6
lenses ... and those lenses with one or two 2X-S T/Cs behind them.

It autofocuses faster on my ZX-5 than I would have expected. It does
tend to micro hunt a little in bad lighting, though. What I mean is
that it quickly homes in on the focal distance of the subject, then
hunts back and forth in very small increments on either side of the
subject a couple or four times. Both of these effects are probably
related to the relatively short end-to-end throw of the focusing ring
and mechanism.

I'll let you all know what I find optically when I do some shooting
with it.

Frank, I own the Bessa L (no rangefinder/needs an lens-specific viewfinder)
with the Snapshot Skopar 25mm f4. True, the body is plasticky, but the lens
is worth the price of the whole kit. I'll get the 15mm eventually. In
terms of shutter noise, I don't think the camera was ever intended on being
Leica-like, only Leica-ready. My ME Super is probably as quiet, maybe more
so. But it is a funky camera, good for a conversation whenever it goes out,
and not threatening as an SLR might be (as it is just plain goofy looking
to the general population).

I got mine from BH when they were having a special, selling them for
US$129.00 (body only).

Best regards,

Chris

Frank thanked the respondents:

Thanks for your responses. I surfed around the web a bit last night, and
much of what you three said was confirmed in various reviews.

Turns out the body's plastic (a camera shop selling them steered me wrong).
They also seem to have variable quality from sample to sample, as some have
found them quite noisy for a rangefinder, while others haven't.

And the lenses have been almost universally praised (plus, I guess, you can
stick old Leica screwmounts on them if you want/can afford to).

Hi Doug,

Neg film captures greater scene dynamics on a lower contrast media (ie it
compresses the hell out of it), slide film captures a lower scene range but has
is a far higher contrast media than neg film, so scanners with a limited
dynamic range have a much better chance of scanning neg film.

Camcorder. One of those small video cameras that record on 8mm or compact
video tape. Many of them have a short, semi-rigid padded strap on the side.
You slide your hand in between the camera body and the strap, palm against
the side of the camera, finger tips on the controls, and the padded strap
covers the back of your hand. Makes it very easy to handle and hang on to
the camera, and hard to drop it.

A regular wrist strap would probably be an improvement over the
neck/sholder strap, too.

If Eudora will run on your machine, you can have it label messages as well
sort them to separate folders. But the nice thing about moving them into
separate folders is you won't need to eyeball filter (if it is in the
Pentax folder, it's a Pentax message, and if it isn't, it isn't).

Hi Paul,

You might want to see if you can compare operating costs on the models you
are interested in. It isn't unusual for the cheaper printers in a
manufacturer's lineup to have the highest operating cost and the shortest

New Year's Resolutions

2001-12-20 Thread Dan Scott

I've been reviewing this year's shooting (mine) and comparing it to the
previous year's (though I only shot for the last 5 months of 2000).

On the good side, the shots I like this year are a little better than the
shots I liked last year, and my subject matter has greater variety.

On the bad side, this year's bad shots seem to suffer more from point and
shoot defects than last year's (I was trying harder, I think), the overall
number of shots is fewer, and I used my tripod less.

This year, I resolve to shoot more film, and to use both my tripod and my
brain more.

Re: Got a free A50/1.4

Last spring I bought a sad little ME Super lens on ebay for US$50. It
was supposed to be a knock-around body I could just keep in the glove box in
the car... no worries. The lens was listed on the auction as an 50mm f2.
When the camera arrived, the lens turned out to be a K50 f1.2. That's
how I came by my second f1.2.

Hate me if you must, but I could do without it.

Can I join the hate me club?

I got a free K 50/1.4 last year: I bought an ME with this lens on eBay
advertised as a fixer. The problem? The lens couldn't be removed from
the body
at all. I paid $65.00 for the combo, applied a drop of penetrating oil to
the
lens flange, waited an hour or so and then removed my beautiful working ME
from
my beautiful K 50/1.4. I replaced the slightly pitted lens flange on the
camera
with one from my junk bin (the mount on the lens itself was perfect, oddly
enough) and slapped a 50/2.0 on the ME and sold it for about $80.00 as I
recall.

Good idea for all of us - only take more pictures and use less film. Switch
those motor and AF off. If you don't have time to compose - take a Valium.

Buy you wife/partner a Happy-Snappy and let them burn up the film. Our last
trip together, she shot 6 rolls to my 3 and pinched almost all of mine for
her album.

Re: Car Show Photo Suggestions ...

It would be very uneven lighting. You'd have to have two flashes, and
you'd still have some nasty reflections, Your best bet is to use the
lighting in the show area and adjust your filtration accordingly. If you
check with some local photographers who regularly shoot in that
exhibition hall, they can probably advise you as to the color temp of
the lights. The pr person at the facility might also be able to provide
this info.

What if an off camera flash was used so that you had the light coming in at
45 degrees, have a friend hold the flash or if you have room, use a tripod.

 How would this arrangement work?

Re: Car Show Photo Suggestions ...

2001-12-20 Thread Paul Stenquist

It's very difficult to light a car for flash photography. The studio
photogs use giant heavily diffused light boxes hung from the ceiling of
a big studio. The boxes have to be positioned just so to achieve
acceptable highlights, and they have to be augmented with various
reflectors and flags. It's like trying to take a picture of a mirror.
Use the available light. Forget about the flash.

ok, what if we use some sort of diffuser, like flash though a white umbrella?
Would this do? I know its less portable, but I am curious.

Re: Traveling experiences

2001-12-20 Thread gabriel bovino

I've actually had an experience right after 9/11 at O'Hare in Chicago (don't
know if it makes a difference though), but it went like this:

Me: Oh, I almost forgot. I have film that I need inspected.
Security: OK sir, then just put it in the tray.

Me:Yeah, but I want it hand inspected.
Security: I know sir, just go ahead and put it in the tray.

Me:OK, here you go. *reaching out and handing her the tray with the film
in it*
Security: Go ahead and put the tray down.

Me:But I need it hand inspected.
Security: I know sir, just go ahead and put the tray down.

Me:OK (figuring I can't hand it to her directly for security reasons, I
place it on the conveyor for her to pick it up as I pass through)

She doesn't bother picking it up and purposely lets it run through the X-Ray
machine.

Note to self pick up lead lined film carrying pouch.

 Hello

I just got back from Ada, Oklahoma. (2 flights each way)

Security is not what it used to be before 9/11 (of course we all knew
that) I had take off my boots, my belt, empty all of my pockets, send the
laptop through the X-ray seperately. etc.

I did bring 6-8 rolls of unexposed film with me (hoping that I will need
it) it was in a ziplock bag along with 2 floppy disks. I requested hand
inspections (this was in Lincoln, NE where they were really-really serious
 about the security)

They hand inspected it and did not say a word.

On the way back I had similar experience. Oklahoma City airport was a
little more efficient and a little less theral but it was more then what I
have ever seen still. I agan requested a hand inspection. I had 8-10
rolls of film, 3 floppy disks and a Video 8 video tape. No problems,
 again.

 Just wanted to share.

Enablement wish list...

2001-12-20 Thread Nick Wright

Hey all,
I'd like to thank Mr Bruce for helping to enable me in the regards of a
used AF500FTZ flash... I can ~not~ wait to get it in the mail!!! Second, I'd
like to put out a couple of other requests for used items; hopefully someone
out there can help me with them as well. The next item I'd like to get for
my kit is the Grip Strap for the pz1p. Anyone have one? Also, in the next
1-3 months I will be adding a FA* 80-200/2.8 to my kit. My 80-200/4 is one
of my most used lenses and I fear that it is slowly but surely
deteriorating. Most of my shots with this lens now have a very distinct
green cast, even in good sunlight. And it also reads at least two stops
under any of my other lenses when set to f4. So getting a high quality
80-200/2.8 will be a high priority for me. Hopefully, Mr. IRS can help me
along those lines. ;) Anyway, if anyone has one of those lenses that they'd
like to unload; or if someone sees one for a good price. Please let me know.
Of course, please reply privately. [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks!!!
