2002-02-16 Thread T Rittenhouse

Does anyone ever read my posts? Here is the essense of my previous comments
on this.

The structure of the image and the resolution of the optical system are not
the same thing at all. On film resolution is where the image starts to blur
together that blur is sort of analog, that is it blends. Digital images are,
well digital, the edges of the pixels are distinct. The point where the
digital image begins to appear analog is at least 10 times the resolution
limits of the optical system. Which puts you up around that 10K ppi figure I
mentioned in another post.

WTB: Bogen Tripod Legs and Head

I know what you mean about the Bogen QR, Nick. I just converted my Bogen QR

2002-02-16 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Somehow I ended up with an extra one of these. The glass is perfect,
and the cosmetics are fine as well. There is the remnant of a sticker
on the front element barrel that I've had some difficulty in removing,
although I've been told it can be easily removed with a little patience
and some de-gumming stuff, neither of which I have.

The downside to this lens is that it needs a lubrication ... there's
some looseness in the barrel or front element group. I've seen lenses
much worse than this that still make great photos, but, frankly, I'd
suggest a CLA for this puppy. With that in mind, the price is low:
$70.00 + shipping.

If you're interested, please contact me off list. Thanks!

Re: Bellows 100mm Weird Bokeh

2002-02-16 Thread Bob Blakely

William!

As you know, All out of focus shapes are the shape of the aperture as traced
by the light source(s) - always. If the light source had been a point
source, then the edges of the aperture blades would have been reproduced
exactly - save for some minor diffraction.

You've not told us what this is a photo of. It appears to be an overexposed
photo of an out of focus, non point, possibly near round light source. If
the light source was (essentially) round, then you have 8 blades in your
aperture on that screw mount lens. I have the K-mount version which has 6
blades.

I'm not sure this would actually be called bokeh. It's more a fuzzy picture
of the bokeh generator. It would be nice if the star was exposed as
gray. That way we could view the light distribution across the aperture.
I've noticed that this has more of an effect on the bokeh of many photos
than the shape of the aperture.

Bokeh (bad, good, neutral, disturbing) is a matter of taste.

Bob...

I need to make some 4x5 internegs of my favorite 67 shots (having actually
LOST my #1 ever bw shot when i moved).. I'm getting going on this project on
Monday\Tuesday (eek)...

I'm picking up PROFESSIONAL B/W Duplicating Film SO-132 for the job, but i'm
a little confused by the process to use to actually GET the exposure. The
Kodak site quoteth:

 EXPOSURE
You can use tungsten, fluorescent, or tungsten-halogen light sources to
expose this film.
Make a series of test exposures under your conditions.
Start with a trial exposure of 40 seconds if you use a tungsten light
source that
provides 5 footcandles (54 lux) at the exposure plane.
 More exposure produces lower densities in the duplicate;
 less exposure produces higher densities.

Now - I plan to use my Saunders LPL to project the negative onto the film
(which will be flattened on my vacuum easel), and development will be no
issue.

QUESTIONs:...
How in HECKS name can I calculate 5 footcandles (54 lux)... what f-stop is
this? I can measure light using my Sekonic 501...
Looking at the curves, I'm going for density of 1 with 20 second exposure
(20 lux seconds)... Is this correct, or have I got it wrong?

If, I invest in a QR system, it'd prolly be one of the
Arca-Swiss varietys. I've seen the qr plates by Really
Right Stuff models for the pz1p that are machined
specifically for the bottom plate of that camera,
matching it's curves. They also manufacture plates for
most of the Pentax Big Glass that's on my wish list. I
was not aware that Bogen had more than one type of QR
system. I am only familiar with thos g**awful hexagon
thingamajigs, that add quite a bit of weight to the
camera. And (without mods) does nothing to keep the
camera from twisting when at odd angles.

Re: K mount to 39mm adapters.

2002-02-16 Thread E. van Ginkel

Hello,

No there's no K- to 39mm adapter, there is howeven a 39mm to 42mm adapter
and of course the K to 42 screwmount. The use of 39mm lenses on a K-body is
very very very limited, there are some, now very old, russian lenses you can
use, they were made for the first Zenit SLR's, those are the only lenses you
can use without losing infinityfocussing. Be aware not to use leica
screwmountlenses directly on a slr because of the rangefinder cam on the
lens could kill your mirror. Also the mountregister is something of 29 mm
instead of 45.5 of the K-mount. If you want to use it for enlarginglenses on
a K-mountbellow be free to try it, I did try it and wasn't to pleased with
the results. (The lens: Rodenstock Rodagon 2.8/50)

Re: Pentax a best ever prime lens at Pop?

2002-02-16 Thread Joseph Tainter

There's no article, just reviews of the three prime lenses (including
the 31 limited), plus a review of a zoom. There's also a review of a
Voigtlander camera, which comes with the reviewed Voigtlander lens. In
the camera review they do say that the Voigtlander lens may be the best
prime they have tested.

On Pop Photo's online discussion forum the managing editor does clarify
that the three primes reviewed are what the cover refers to.

I think it's sloppy. I'm reading through the issue now. It is filled
with writing and typesetting errors. Either the copyeditor was out sick,
or they have just cut back on copyediting to save money. Either way, the
magazine is annoying to read. Peterson's has had the same problem over
the past few issues.

Joe

Are you guys saying that there's no article inside about the best
lenses, or just nothing about the pentax lens?

Yeah, I'm definitely waning - I just had a 15/3.5 in my hands and refused
to buy it, looked at all three limited lenses and decided they were too
expensive and ignored an 85/1.4 in favour of a quarter pounder with cheese
from MacDonald's.

But I did think that an FA120/4 (645) with the right adapters was probable
my next lens, so maybe I'm not completely hopeless.

I'm still weighing up an 800/f4.0 (6x7) vs my wife throwing me out, so
there's hope for me yet.

I've always liked the OM1 body, but for some reason

The body is almost as small as an MX, is light, quiet,

like the shutter speed placement on the lens mount.

Someone was asking about a right angle mirror or lens for Pentax?

Go here:

http://www.usedphoto.com

Click Pentax and scroll down...he has an Asahi mirror adapter for $65.
Probably a deal...

 Hi,

Can some one explain to me which lenses in pentax smc came
out as a manual focus lense and auto focus lense.

Just trying to get my way around this.

Does anyone also know where I can get a Grip Strap for my Pz1p?

Tried a few stores in Melbourne (genus, michaels photo time)
and they seem not interested in selling Pentax. Everywhere I go
there all pushing the Nikon F80 or N80 and when you ask the
question they look at you with eyebrows up in the air as if there
saying 'what do you want me to do' - then they try to sell you
 sigma alternatives.

I have given up on Genius, Phototime and Michaels in Melbourne
and will be purchasing my gear in future through European
Cameras in Sydney or B H Photo. They seem to be the only 2
that are interested. This could be me but thats what I have learnt.

 Thanks

 True, the Pentax 6 x 7 system has been around a long time--over 30

maintain viability in the photographic market, but basically today's

Besides producing excellent images, the Pentax 6 x 7 has several
advantages over other 6x7 reflex cameras. It is small (for a 6x7),
 easy to hold and use hand-held, and quick to operate just like a 35mm;
and for fast action fashion shoots, this is exactly what is needed.

That is not to say, that other medium format cameras (or even 35mm)
can't be used for fashion, but years ago, when I was first beginning my
professional photo career, I assisted a photographer who told me that
the Pentax Super Takumar lenses ...liked women, and produced the

Things Have Changed

2002-02-16 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Ran into a friend today and told him of a client of mine who introduced
me to his printer. My friend asked What kind is it? to which I replied
It's a person - he does BW darkroom work.

My friend also had an opportunity to use the new Sigma camera with the
Foveon chip, comparing it to the Nikon D1 (Is that what it's called) and
the Canon D-30. He said the results from the Sigma were superior.
Didn't have a chance to talk a lot more about it, but he said the Sigma
showed zero color fringing where both the Nikon and Canon did.

There is a surprising development in the offing about which I can't say
too much other than it might put a smile on the face of those who desire
a bigger chip (sensor?) in a 35mm-sized camera. To paraphrase my
friend, It'll kick ass!

Have you flown lately? What's going on with security is a farce. It's meant
to give the average public a warm feeling, but it isn't accomplishing much
but long delays. Would any of this have stopped what happenned on 9/11, I
think not. The best thing re security since 9/11 is that passengers will be
much more inclined to fight someone trying to take over an aircraft than

Re: 67 Negative copying: eek!, and longish

2002-02-16 Thread William Robb

From: Oliver Raymond
Subject: 67 Negative copying: eek!

 QUESTIONs:...
How in HECKS name can I calculate 5 footcandles (54 lux)...
what f-stop is
this? I can measure light using my Sekonic 501...
Looking at the curves, I'm going for density of 1 with 20
second exposure
(20 lux seconds)... Is this correct, or have I got it wrong?

Don't worry, you can test it this way.
The duplicating film is very slow, more like contact printing
speed if I remember. It is very exposure sensitve, and also
pretty development sensitive, so you might want to do a full lab
style test on it.

Here is what I would do.

Set the lens to the best aperture.
Then make a test sheet of a grey card (you can use the white
side, but you have to subtract 3 stops of speed from the end
calculation. Use a really wide exposure range, say about 10
stops. Remember to start with the dark slide all the way out,
and progressively cover the film.
Use the camera at infinity focus
Base your beginning exposure on 5 stops less than iso 12, or
whatever your meters lowect iso setting is.
Process the film as per the instruction sheet. You will
hopefully end up with a sheet that goes from clear to black.
Make another test sheet, starting with the exposure time of the
last clear strip on the first test. You will have a pretty good
idea of the exposure increment from the first test.
Process the film according to the instruction sheet.
This test should give you your speed point, though I have had to
make a third test on some occassions.
Your speed point is where the film density is .15 over BDF on a
transmission densitomer that is set up for negatives (most come
that way).
If you don't have a desitometer, a close up lens adapted to a
spot meter can work, put the neg on a light table and measure
stops. The speed point is one stop over BDF.
If you can refine the test down to 1/3 stop increments, you
don't need a measuring tool. The speed point would be the third
visible density patch from BDF.
Now to find the proper development time.
Take a sheet of unexposed but normally processed film and put it
in your neg carrier. Make sure it is in focus. You can gently
scratch the emulsion to have something to focus on.
Set your lens to its best aperture.
Make a test print (if you use VC papers, use grade 2) to see
where the first visible density increase is.
This is the tentatively correct exposure time for this film/
paper combination at that particular magnification.
Use this time and elevation for the remainder of the test.

Now, back to the camera.
Expose a few film sheets of a gray scale using the correct
exposure from the first test set, and process one of them
according to the instruction sheet.
Make a print of it using the correct exposure time.

Inspect the print to see if you need more, or less negative
contrast.
Process a second sheet, but adjust the development time, or
temperature or dilution (whatever strategy you normally use to
affect the amount of development will work) in the direction you
need to go.
I try to make sure I over correct at this stage, as that way I
have a parameter limit that I can work back from.
Make a print of this negative at the correct exposure time.
Decide now if the correct exposure time is actually correct. If
you have had to make a big change to the amount of film
development, you may have to look at if the BDF has shifted,
which will throw off the correct print exposure.
Don't be surprised if you need to increase the exposure by a bit
to see light tone deliniation, but your exposure time should be
within a half stop, more likely a third stop.
Now we can really start to fine tune things.
Process the third sheet of film, hopefully using a development
time somewhere in between the first two development times.
Print this sheet at the adjusted exposure time.
Inspect to see what adjustments you need. You may decide you
need a bit more film exposure, or perhaps a bit less, or that
you may still need some refinement of the development time.
Change only one parameter at a time when running additional
tests.

Have fun

William Robb

 William!

As you know, All out of focus shapes are the shape of the
aperture as traced
by the light source(s) - always. If the light source had been
a point
source, then the edges of the aperture blades would have been
reproduced
exactly - save for some minor diffraction.

You've not told us what this is a photo of. It appears to be
an overexposed
photo of an out of focus, non point, possibly near round light
source. If
the light source was (essentially) round, then you have 8
blades in your
aperture on that screw mount lens. I have the K-mount version
which has 6
 blades.

I'm not sure this would actually be called bokeh. It's more a
fuzzy picture
of the bokeh generator. It would be nice if the star was
exposed as
gray. That way we could view the light distribution across
the aperture.
I've noticed that this has more of an effect on the bokeh of
many photos
than the shape of the aperture.

Bokeh (bad, good, neutral, disturbing) is a matter of taste.

I understand that the metering in the OM1 is fairly
primitive. This would seem to be it's weakest link.
And if you recall I am looking for a system for

along the lines of an OM1 for tripod mirror locked up

the OM1 could be fitted with a OM2 meter...?
OK, back to reality. Believe me I'm not running out
and buying into any system just yet. I have a couple
of months before I hit the road. I'm still trying to
sort out film from my last trip. I spent three months
with a Canon QL17 and Minox 35ML. Lot's of fun.

By the way, that ME doesn't have an exposure lock,
does it? Same for the LX, I just don't get it. Doesn't
having to manually compensate for lighting negate most
of the benefits of AE? Plus if I recall the ME's
compensation is in full stop's?
