If you take an icy cold camera into a warm car you'll get condensation.
Just try to put your camera into the fridge and then take it out in room
temperature after a few hours.

That depends how much of them they have in stock. I remember, when the
Canon G2 was going out, the G1 did fall slightly in price (10% only),
then they called all of them back (or whatever, they were not
available) to not cut the sales of the new G2 (if you could get a
sale-out G1 at 50% of G2 price, what would you do :)

As these DSLR are pretty much low sale figures items, I except the D30
will fall slightly, than disappear quickly to not cut sales of D60...
Much like the practice with cellular phones or computers. I would very
much like to buy NIB phone of two years ago at 20% the price of it, or
buy a 5 gig hardrive at 10% the price of current 50 gig drive, but
none are available, precisely for the reason of cutting sales of newer
items. Consumerism again :)

28-70 vs 24-90 vs 28-105

2002-03-13 Thread Peter Smekal

I'm thinking about buying a good and not too expensive "normal range" zoom
lense to use on my Z1-p. There is the SMC-FA 28-70 mm/4,0 AL which I have
seen. It seems to be quite good and not too pricy. There are also two newer
lenses, both with more tele-range:
1) SMC-FA 24-90mm f/3.5-4.5 AL [IF] and
2) SMC-FA 28-105/3,2-4,5 AL [IF]
At leastv here in Sweden the 24-90 is more expensive than the other two
lenses. Is it worth the extra money?
What is your opinion (humble of course) of these lenses? Any
recommendations? Have you seen any test results for the new lenses?

Not a bad idea, and I was thinking about that. But
like today I was shooting outside at the zoo in the
glorious sunshine, and then I went in to the dark and
unbelievably crowded herpetarium (reptile house). I
sat outside long enough to switch to a faster lens and

Spring has already sprung around in deepest south
Texas. And since I'm on Spring Break this week, I
have an extra long weekend. Thanks to the very kind
Doug Brewer of Kentucky I have an almost new ZX-5N
with 28-70/4 and 50/2 to shoot up the week.

Today I took a trip to the Gladys Porter Zoo with
family, friends, and perfect weather. I'm awaiting
the results from the lab and will share as soon as I
can steal time on a scanner.

Maybe tomorrow or Friday I will head to Laguna
Atascosa NWR, renown for ridiculous numbers of
migrating birds and the elusive ocelot.

Re: How to open a MZ-3? (or MZ-5, ZX-5 etc)

2002-03-13 Thread Paul Stenquist

I worked on an advertising account of a European automobile manufacturer in the
eighties. We shot a commercial on the beach at Normandy one year and were
unaware of the pattern of the tides. To make a long story short, we drowned a
$100,000 car in the salt water. We did manage to pull it out after it had been
completely submerged, but it wouldn't run, and the manufacturer's engineers
decided that it could not be salvaged. The body parts were removed, as were
some other hardware fixtures, but the rest of the car was crushed for salvage.
Salt water is a very bad thing.

with all due respect, all this metering of IR is mere rubbish.
each box has an info sheet inside with all you need to
know for shooting it. the most important part of a good
IR image is "seeing" the effect of IR on the scene in your
viewfinder!

1) brightly lit, preferably head on from behind you
2) no large areas of shadow (very little IR reflectance!)
3) foliage reflectance is due to the IR bouncing around
in the cell structure and back out, so get some leaves
and plants and such in there
4) blue sky and water go black / foliage goes whitish-grey,
clouds stand out against the black sky even more so than
   w/ regular b&w w/ a red filter
5) many manmade things like concrete, metal and fabric &
such take on eerie looks, depending upon their reflectivity
of the IR spectrum - ie: the green paint on the bridge
here comes out bone-white (unrelated to foliage effect)

f11@1/125th (or equivalent) w/ the #25 red and have at it!

If you will be spending a few days in Toronto next month, I could
send the Canadian currency to one of the PDML guys if that is
way easier for you.
Yes, I prefer the M-42 Auto mount! Also yes to the 72mm filter.

I will hopefully then be able to use both the 300mm and the

Whales, hopefully.

This time of year their migration comes very close to the shores of
Southern California. Anyone have any suggestions on which lens to
bring? I'm thinking my 300mm will suffice, but I'm not sure how close the
boats'll actually get to the creatures. I'll probably bring along Provia
400F so I can get a couple of extra stops of handholdability in any case.

Other than the giant mammals, maybe a little something for this month's PUG

actually, if you just use the guidelines ...
f11@1/125th or equivalent w/ a #25 red filter
and frame brightly-lit subjects w/ minimal shadowed areas,
preferably w/ lowish angle sun from behind you
and don't overdevelop - you'll have good results

using a non-IR calibrated meter will lead you astray

YES! wait until night in a darkened room, if need be

> Do you know about focusing for Infrared film?

you will only need to concern yorself w/ this for close-in
shots and/or wide apertures at modest distance.
tight apertures and distance basicly eliminate need for concern.

Re: Still more wide-angle questions

2002-03-13 Thread Bruce Dayton

Joseph,

A while back I had the Tokina 17mm when I aquired the FA 20/2.8. I
had to decide if I was going to keep both. After doing some tests, I
concluded that the 17 was not that much wider to warrant carrying
around two lenses. I think you would want to carry the 15.

Something else you really should consider. Pentax makes a truly
unique lens in the Fisheye zoom. What is interesting is that as you
zoom in, the fisheye effect diminishes quite a bit. It gives you the
fisheye and the ultra wide in one smaller package. You wouldn't have
to carry around your Zenitar either. If you can find one to try you
might be very pleasantly suprised at how versatile it is.

ME metering

2002-03-13 Thread Butch Black

If the battery is getting low on a ME super is the LED's the first things to
go. I was trying the trick of super gluing the white lock button so it
wouldn't lock on auto (big hands no fingernails) I went to try the mode
dial(?) and was not getting any led's to light up in the viewfinder. I undid
the super glue modification to no avail. Admittedly, I did not try the meter
prior to the super glue, but the meter was working OK about a week ago. I
may have left the camera on auto, not locked, during that time. The
electromagnetic shutter seems to work ok as does the auto exposure mode. Any
feedback would be appreciated. Also, I found that the shutter seems to work
regardless of which way the battery is put in (using a #58 lithium
battery). As a matter of course I will replace the battery tomorrow.

On a side note the list is great for interesting little known facts. After
owning a Spotty for over 30 years the list was the first place i had ever
heard the mirror lock up trick. I'm having fun playing around with that.

Re: 28-70 2.8. Which one to buy?

2002-03-13 Thread Takehiko Ueda

Hello Alex,

I don't have experience with the Sigmas, and I also don't
have the specific Tokina you mentioned. What I have is
Tokina AT-X270 Pro (28-70/2.8), which is really good.

The best thing I found with Tokina is its build quality.
And if you use MF cameras, Tokina is even better than
Pentax. Its MF feel is quite nice.

OTOH, for its build quality, it's very big and heavy,
though I don't quite mind.

Hi, Wendy,

Toronto? If you ever do get this way (and have an hour or two), feel free to
let me know to see if we can have a coffee or something. I know if you're
coming for stuff like kids' sports tournies, time can be short. Ah well, moot
point for this weekend, anyway...

This weekend? I don't know what I'll shoot. A lovely young lady and I may be
going for a walk along the Humber River with her roomate's dog. We're "only
friends", but I like walking with lovely ladies regardless of the nature of
our relationship! She suggested that I take a camera along, which is nice of
her; I didn't have the heart to tell her that a camera would've come along
anyway!

Have fun listening to your frogs.

Still more wide-angle questions

2002-03-13 Thread Joseph Tainter

For ultra-wide, I have the FA 20-35 (a great lens) and the Zenitar 16mm.
f2.8 fisheye. I am thinking about getting a non-fisheye prime that is
wider than the FA 20-35. The choices seem to be:

17 mm. (Tamron, Tokina): 104 degree diagonal field
15 mm. (Pentax, if one can find used) 111 degree diagonal field
14 mm. (Sigma, Tamron) 114 degree diagonal field

Now, at 20 mm. the FA 20-35 has a 94 degree diagonal view. The 17s are
small and affordable, but only give an additional 10 degrees of diagonal
view. The 14s and 15 give much more view but are expensive and heavy,
and these lenses have design limits - weaker at the edges, light
fall-off, flare in the non-Pentax brands.

I use very wide-angle for architecture, maybe also for landscapes. I
find that I use the FA 20-35 a lot, and that it gives me perhaps my
highest percentage of "keepers." The options I am pondering are:

1. Get a 17 - small, inexpensive, but is the extra 10 degrees of view
worth carrying around an extra lens?

2. Get a 14 or 15 - gives the extra view, but has the limits noted
above.

3. Just make do with the FA 20-35 and the Zenitar 16 mm. fisheye.

What do wide-angle users think?

Stay away from Genesis.the only mail order sources that I'd trust would
be B&H or Adorama. KEH is also good as well and have decent prices on
excellent quality used gear. Some folks have had good luck with Genesis and

to get burned by these guys than save anything. And above all NEVER EVER
EVER buy from Cambridge Camera Exchange or AAA Camera. These guys are

I have both 75mm lenses. I got the LS 75 when I needed the higher synch

aperture AE, which is what I like shooting anyway. I'd advise getting the LS
75.

Optio and Other Digital Cameras

2002-03-13 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Out with the old, in with the new! No, I'm net getting rid of my manual
Pentax gear, but thinking about replacing my old digital camera with
something newer and sharper.

I'm using a Sony Mavica, which is, at best, marginal for my needs. It
does have a couple of features that I like, however. One is that it can
focus very, very close, to within about an inch or so of the subject.
The other is that it uses an f/1.8 fixed aperture lens. Do any other
digital cameras offer these features.

My biggest concern is that every camera I've looked at has a lens that
only goes to about a 35mm equivalent on the wide end. Is there any
camera that'll go to 28mm, or, better yet, 24mm?

The Optio is a nice, small package, but its lenses are relatively slow,
and of a variable aperture, and it doesn't look like it can even take an
accessory WA lens, as some other cameras can. Is this the case? How
close can it focus?

And what about the sensor speed? Maybe I missed it in the specs, but I
couldn't tell what the ISO range is on the various Optios.

Hope you can help with these questions. Thanks!

Tough question. I really doubt you'll find anyone who's used all three. I can
say that the Tokina you mention is wonderful. And I believe that the Sigma 24-70
takes 82mm filters which can be a big deal: Not only are they expensive, but you
may not be able to use them with any of your other lenses. One of the things
that put me off the Pentax 28-70 was the fact that it uses 67mm filters. By
getting the Tokina I was able to share 77mm filters with my FA*80-200.

Hi Alan,
where are you situated? The film indeed is cheap if bought locally
(but export prices are of course higher, to cope with much
different "buying power" of the Dollar Almighty, which is about
3x bigger than our currency's usually). The film is e.g. sold in
the UK by Patterson, under the name Acupan (100,200,400,800). As I
said, I really like only the 100 version, but it's because it's a
classical type film, whereas the 200 and 800 are sort of T grain
emulsions (multilayer) (not my taste) and the 400 is not good IMO.

Good light,

Hello Alex, I own the Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX. This lens fit my situation
extremely well. It is inexpensive, nice and wide (24mm) and after shooting

Alexandre,

Tough call. My wisdom and experience puts the Tokina as the best
choice. There are many aspects to a lens. Sigma generally seems to
get sharpness pretty good, but has problems in other areas (build
quality, compatibility). I have the ATX Tokina Pro II that you
mentioned and have found it to be quite good for a zoom. It is very
solidly built and fairly heavy. It also has quite good manual focus
feel. I don't know how well the Sigma's are in that area.

Which one is better (less distortions, sharper, etc.) I've found some
reviews on the 28-70 and
some of them say sigma 28-70 is better that Tokina and other say tokina

I'm sure it uses distance info some how but at the
same time it doesn't warn you when you choose certain
apertures like F16 pointed at something 50 ft away.

Re: Please Help - Corroded battery compartment

2002-03-13 Thread Otis Wright, Jr.

I broke and lost a piece of the copper contact in the battery
compartment of my Spotmatic F. When I had a CLA done, I asked to have
this repaired. They lapped a piece of similar copper contact over the
stub that remained and soldered them together. Has worked just fine
since. If your good with a fine soldering, which I am not, you might
try this.

You're right, though I did back off of saying no meter readings were used. Obviously
it's got to be metering...but I wonder if there's some calculating going on too.

I was just throwing out a theory...if anyone has another explanation for the
consistency of TTL flash exposed negs, go for it.

The test I have in mind involves testing A vs. FA lenses (I'm assuming A lenses have

William,

The biggest flaw I see to Tom's observations is when you bounce or
diffuse the flash. How would the body go about knowing that is what
you are doing? In those cases, you should see severe underexposure.
My experience is that they work fine.

FS: FA 135/2.8

2002-03-13 Thread Bruce Dayton

And so it begins, to finance 67 purchases, I am starting to sell some
of my 35 stuff. First to go is an FA 135 f:2.8. Condition is in KEH
Like New -. This is the metal barreled lens that Roberto Burgos used
to crow about. I have found for me that it is a focal length that I
just don't use much. Hardley ever used. Includes original caps and
an equally new B+W MC UV filter.

B&H New price is $309, KEH Used Excellent is $265. Asking $250.

Thanks,

Please Help - Corroded battery compartment

2002-03-13 Thread David Weiss

Hi,

Just received my "pristine" Spotmatic F from
ebay--well, sort of pristine, except the battery
compartment has a leaking battery in it. The copper
contact has corroded off (actually, it fell into my
lap after I removed the battery). It makes me wonder
how the seller knew the meter was working.

I might try to attempt to remove the bottom plate. Can
someone give me some general advice as to any problems
I might encounter? Any strange wires or springs? I
am hoping to find a little wire in there that I might
solder a piece of copper foil onto.

BTW, this package included a spotmatic F manual
written in French (I think). Do you think this should
have been mentioned in the ad? Anyone want to deal
for it?

And the case is missing the metal piece that attaches
the bottom to the top, the little half moon.

I would say about the last 8 of 10 ebay auctions I
have won have ended up this way. I do not know how
you folks always avoid such hassles.

Any advice concerning fixing the battery
compartment/removing the bottom plate would be much
appreciated.

I have no experience with Pentax 645, but some experience with

appreciate the option of high sync speed.
IIRC, the 645 has a 1/60 sync, which is a stop faster than what

I think I work a little differently...I always drag the shutter as much as I can get
away with, so I'm in manual mode, with the shutter usually around 1/30 or 1/60 and the
aperture at f/5.6 or f/8.

So the ambient levels are fluctuating wildly, but the foregrounds are generally right
on.

The issue I'm referring to isn't about even lighting in one photo, it's consistent
exposure across an entire roll.

The thing that really made this click for me today was a shot I developed this
a.mA girl with a strapless dress is down in the right lower corner, usually an
area that
doesn't get much meter weight. However, I'm focused on her, and she's perfectly
exposed.

What I'm saying is I don't get much of that with flash!

I think it's got to be some sort of hybrid algorithm like Brendan says, because it's
not *totally* predictable.

I'm going to test it out, but I was just wondering if anyone had any info, since the
"FA lens distance info" subject comes up now and again.

Hi,

The famous photo is on the front cover of McCurry's book 'Portraits',
published by Phaidon. On the back cover it shows what I assume is the
next frame he shot. She'd obviously realised what he was doing,
covered her face, and she looks to me as though she was giggling,
embarrassed, proud etc. I've seen the same look on people I've
photographed when they realise what I'm up to. It's a nice
counterpoint to the famous shot.

Re: OT: Question for AOL Users

Not that I'm a big AOL fan, but I don't think thats true.

Funny this should come up today. I have an AOL account that I use pretty
much just for ISP purposes (that is, I dont use the email account attached
to it). However, on the rare occasion that I get emails to my school
account (which I check using Telnet) that have links in them, I forward
it to my AOL account. Once I check it in AOL, I then have clickable
links. This hasn't happened in a while, but I just used the feature this
morning, before I check the PDML post. Moreover, the piece of mail that I
forwarded was forwarded to me through a number of previous (non-AOL)
recipients.

One caveat to add is that I use AOL 5.0, not 7.0.

I know this doesnt help wrt how its done, but just thought I should add
that it Is indeed doable.

Re: TTL Flash Metering and Distance Info

2002-03-13 Thread Bruce Dayton

tom,

I was thinking that it had more to do with getting more even light do
to flash fill moreso than TTL alone. On the older bodies, metering
for TTL did not include ambient light at all, so most images ended up
looking like dark backgrounds. With later bodies, ambient light is
taken into account and shutter speeds are lowered to slowest
handholding to allow as much ambient light as possible. Then the TTL
is just going to fill in where necessary. That would produce more
even results.

Have you tried using slow films/fastest shutter speeds (1/250)? If
you did I would think that you would get results that would show the
inherent TTL metering problem of weddings - mostly white in frame -
face gets underexposed - mostly black in the frame - face gets
overexposed.

I have often wondered what the metering pattern is for the TTL sensor
- I'm guessing it is center-weighted. That could also account for
some differences.

Re: TTL Flash Metering and Distance Info

2002-03-13 Thread Brendan

Actually I'd also like to know since when bounced or
using the omni bounce cover it still exposes correctly
even with 2 stops loss. It seems that it does it
something more like this ( using your theory as a
template )

- lens says it's focused at 10 feet
- flash guide number is 40
- aperture is f/2

Fire the flash at 1/2 power but meter just in case.

Interesting stuff. Unfortunately for me, the photos show up but not

If you are using the Kodak film...shoot it at 400 ISO. Your meter on
the
Super will be fine...make sure you develop it for 400. I made the
mistake of
shooting it at 100 and developing it at 400. I now have a roll of
nice DARK
negs too.

Make sure you load the film in the dark...and take it out in the
dark. Get
it processed as soon as you can. Keep it in the fridge until then.

Do you know about focusing for Infrared film? The little red dot on
the
lens?

OT: digital lemonaid

2002-03-13 Thread Patrick White

This doesn't have any Pentax content, but..
My officemate sent me this link.. seems this guy dropped his digital camera
in a pond and then proceeded to use it in it's damaged state. He's getting
some very interesting artistic pictures that I thought some here might
appreciate. The images are not complete garbage, but aren't completely
right either, which I guess is what sort of strikes my fancy about them.
Whether you like this stuff or not, I think this guy should be commended
for making lemonaid from his digital lemons.

TTL Flash Metering and Distance Info

2002-03-13 Thread tom

I've noticed over the course of the last year that rolls of film that were shot with
TTL flash metering (and flash) have much more consistent exposure across frames than
rolls
that used matrix metering and ambient light.

I've come to this conclusion after proofing dozens of rolls of b+w.

Seems to me the only way to explain the difference is that the flash output is
determined by distance info transmitted by an FA lens.

I'm not really sure what that implies...I was under the impression that TTL flash
metering worked like so:

- flash starts to discharge
- ttl flash meter measures output
- ttl flash meter determines that subject has received enough light
- meter tells flash to stop

However, if it's using distance info it's just using a calculation.

- lens says it's focused at 10 feet
- flash guide number is 40
- aperture is f/2

Fire the flash at 1/2 power and don't bother metering.

Maybe it (I guess I'm talking pz-1p here) uses that calculation with FA lenses and
uses quench metering with older lenses?

I might have to test this

Thinking out loud,

Blimey, I just realised that http://www.parkcameras.com/index.htm only
give you £600 part ex on your D30. If thats the case, ebay ones should
be well under £1000 - wouldnt surprise me, but £600 sounds a bit stingy.

D60 £2199, D100 TBC (SUB £2000) - from
http://www.parkcameras.com/index.htm

When they are actually out, expect street prices to be lower still.

The editor from What Digital Camera in the UK reckons the D100 may even
be as low as £1500RRP.

If you are using the Kodak film...shoot it at 400 ISO. Your meter on the
Super will be fine...make sure you develop it for 400. I made the mistake of
shooting it at 100 and developing it at 400. I now have a roll of nice DARK
negs too.

Make sure you load the film in the dark...and take it out in the dark. Get
it processed as soon as you can. Keep it in the fridge until then.

Do you know about focusing for Infrared film? The little red dot on the
lens?

Lenses, 2 Flashes, 2 grips (PZ & MZ-S), K-1000 for sale

2002-03-13 Thread Lindamood, Mark

FA 24-90mm, no traces of light use. Box, caps, and papers, of course.

AF280T flash with case, manual, and the AFW-1 wide-angle (24mm) clip-on
diffuser and case.

330FTZ flash with case, manual, original box (somewhat worn), plus extension
cord 5P (sorry, hot shoe cord adapters not in stock to go with cord).

Battery grip for MZ-s. New in box.

Grips strap for PZ-1p. New in box.

K-1000 body dates from 1977, so it's got the original internal metal parts
vice later plastic substitutes. Looks as old as it is, but it was recently
serviced by Pentax. Includes the 50mm f2.0 it came with and a Pentax strap
(not the original, the thin one with red letters). Takumar 135mm f2.5 can
also be included (or sold separately) for slight additional consideration.

Flashes have simply been replaced by the 360FGZ. They are both in great
shape.

Grips just aren't needed by my small hands. It was an exercise in learning
to try them out.

24-90mm, essentially brand new, on sale because I've decided to simplify my
approach and have set myself up to use primes on the MZ-S and my trusty
28-105 powerzoom on the PZ-1p. Hey. I just like that authoritative snap to
life when you turn on the PZ-1p with the 28-105 attached.

Please contact off list if you have any interest.

You watch - the price of the D30 will drop violently. Here in the UK,
they were about £1649 bare bones. Once the D60 starts moving off UK
shelves, I would expect them to be clearing D30s at £1499. eBay used D30s
were hovering around £1200-1500, that will fall to about a grand, what?

Anyone have any UK pricing on D60 and D100??

Re: What are you planning on photographing this weekend?

2002-03-13 Thread Bmacrae

Mark,

May do some potraiture with my sister-in-law and wife's cousin in the Japanese garden
near home. Will use the LX and 85mm f1.4. Also the Spottie and 105mm f2.8.

Actually, I don't have any St. Pat's plans. Strange how I rarely do (being named
Brendan Patrick MacRae). St. Brendan was really the more interesting Saint you
know...supposedly sailed to Nova Scotia in a leather huled boat. Well, that's the
story anyway...

I actually did most of my "weekend" shooting last night. A friends' band was playing
in San Francisco so I went to shoot them with the LX and the Spottie. I found a photo
shop that was selling some really nice screw gear yesterday afternoon. I went in only
to pick up some Portra 800 and Tri-X and came out with an SMCT 35mm f2 (near mint) in
the original case and original hood...$80. So, I used that at the gig!

If anyone's interested, the same shop has a user LX with hot shoe finder and manual
(no strap, SN 53, roller) for $389. A decent price, but it's a tad beat up. I
checked uder the prism and the mirror and screen and it looked good.

Re: K85mm f.18 diaphragm problem

2002-03-13 Thread jbrooks

Frank
Maybe this does not help much but you never know...

I had a very similar problem with the K85/1.8 that I bought last June,
except that the sticking point was the half-stop between 1.8 and 2.8. Worked
perfectly on the camera. The lens was under warranty so I returned it for
repair, which was carried out satisfactorily in August. The lens has worked
properly since.

There's no way I would have stripped the lens down myself as I'm just not
that brave, but from what I could gather from the shop it was not a
difficult job.

Regards
Jim Brooks

But the word "may" must be there for a reason. I see no basis why you
should think this possibility "may" exist. The last numbers I saw published
from the Japanese camera industry showed that Pentax was the second largest
Japanese camera manufacturer in turnaround.
During the 90's they were also among the most profitable.

Re: How to open a MZ-3? (or MZ-5, ZX-5 etc)

2002-03-13 Thread Otis Wright, Jr.

Having spent a fair bit of time in cooler climes, I'm not sure your example
supports this point. Depending on the air flow in the car and no. of
occupants, it would seem the humidity in the car might be quite low and
condensation on leaving the vehicle minimal and to the extent any occurs, it
would be quickly reversed on reentering the vehicle. Am I missing
something?

Cheers

Re: What are you planning on photographing this weekend?

2002-03-13 Thread Francis_Alviar

I plan on finishing up with my infrared assignment. My first roll didn't
turn out so well. Perhaps an advice from the group is needed. I am using
a Pentax ME Super (just bought it) with Kodak HIE infrared film. The
negatives came out really dense (dark). You can hardly see through them
except when seen through a light table. I adjusted shutter speed and
f-stops but only got about 10 out of the whole roll. Very frustrating but
also educational. I just wish my bank account can take a few more hits
what with the price of infrared film going skyhigh.

Anyway, I'm also going to a local park to shoot some St. Patrick's Day
festivities this time with just regular TMax film.

Sorry for the long post.

Good shooting everyone!!
