Why not use the Auto110 line to make a digital system?

2002-10-03 Thread MPozzi

The news of Olympus and their new Digital
interchangeable lens reflex system got me thinking on
why pentax could not use the old Auto 110 system

to include AF, and more importantly: Digital.
Sensor size whould not be an issue,
Batteries could be dealt with through the add on
grip/motor, and it would be in line with Pentax
philosophy of having small/light equipment...
...just a thought..not sure if it has been discussed

Go out and shoot with them. It'll be great for the first week and then
you'll
realize the quality isn't really there. Film is better and in many ways
easier. You can't easily show your friends at the camera club your digital
images the way you can with slide film. Digital may save time but don't
count
on it. You still have to process the pics you want through the computer etc

etc... I'm guessing very few, maybe 1-2 per cent shoot professionally. Of
that number maybe one or two need digital for fast turnaround. The rest are

just ranting about keeping up with the Nikons and Canons. I'll be happy if
Pentax comes out with a good digital I can use my old lenses on within the
next 2-3 years.

any serious photographer who is not actively using a digital camera and
learning the workflow necessary to produce as good work as possible within
the limitations of current technology is just asking to be marginalized,
just as large format photography is. technology right now is changing so
fast and there is no practical limitation in sight for the next 5 years. in
the past 5 years, we have gone from 2 Megapixel pro digital cameras to 12
Megapixel ones. even if they just double in resolution in the next 5 years,
they are going to be essentially equivalent to a 4000dpi slide scanner and
close to what a really good slide film can resolve. with a digital original
and places finally accepting digital submissions of work, the problems of
duplicating slides and all those problems goes away. having 30 digital
portfolios circulating at any one time is hugely less expensive than 30
dupe slide portfolios. as for digital presentations at camera clubs, i
expect that the clubs will acquire their own presentation systems and
accept a picture CD that you bring to a meeting. anyone who is selling
their work regularly will see a huge reduction in backend costs by going
mostly to fully digital, but to get quality results at the same time means
developing habits and workflow to ensure that they themselves don't
introduce anything to degrade their work.

Chris Brogden replied to my comments on a local commercial photographer and
his attachment to film, vs. digital:
15 to 20 seconds [download time from camera to computer] is too
 slow

And how long does it take to develop film?

He finds digital to be limiting because he's not able to line up a
series of shots thus captured and compare them side-by-side

Sure he can... they'll just be a smaller size to fit them on the screen.
It's like liking up a bunch of negatives to look at [Snip] I would
even argue that looking at digital pics on a monitor can be even
easier and more productive in some cases than looking directly at
 negatives [Snip]

Hi Chris,

You make good points. So you'd think that for this fellow, switching to
digital would be an easy decision. Thus, I'm surprised that this fellow
insists that for now -- and probably for five years out -- he believes film
is still an advantage for his clients. Hmmm, I'm still puzzled. Maybe I'll
see if I can find an e-mail address for this guy and send him a note.
Perhaps it's got a lot to do with the types of subjects he shoots.

It sounds like he's comparing digital files (non-prints) to prints
from negatives, and that's an apples/oranges comparisons

That could be it right there. I can see the advantage of comparing hardcopy
images (hardcopy meaning a print or a negative, vs. a virtual image).
Maybe you would call that a ~preference~ rather than an ~advantage~. This
would be indeed be an apples/oranges sort of comparison, as you suggest.

Well, one more thing to ponder!

Mamiya advertising is better than Pentax

2002-10-03 Thread Robert Soames Wetmore

Hello-

I've noticed that many on the list decry the size and weight of the EOS-1v
and F5 type cameras and advocate that for that size it would make more sense
to have an MF camera - up to a certain telephoto length, anyway. I recall,
too, the posting of a link to some nature photog who switched from Canon to
Pentax 645 for this very reason.

Obviously, there are also issues of lens speed, wide-angle availability,
lens/kit costs, and camera automation/sophistication that may weigh against
such an option.

My main point is that this type of advertising might be brilliant on the
part of Pentax, certainly for the 645 (and especially if it were to get USM
and/or Image-stabilization as a few have dreamed).

However, Mamiya is taking advantage of just this in recent ads, such as on
page 37 of the November 2002 issue of Photographic. It is quite a
compelling ad which shows head-on shots (which make the case better than if
one sees the depth of both systems) of a MAMIYA 7II next to an F5 (w/ name
on Camera and lens blacked-out) and then below shows the difference in image
size. Such a simple point - and made in such a graphic way that drives home
the point. Would that Pentax advertising come up with such a concept.

most of the remaining parts are mechanical (engines) and/or electronical

While mechanical/electronical machines reduces our needs of pure human work

Therefore I think a huge difference is to be stated between those terms. And

Also, let us hope they will bring out the new products for the 50th
Anniversary of the Asahiflex, not the 50th Anniversary of the first
Pentax (2007)!!

Got some conflicting information floating around but...

According to http://212.187.14.19/history.htm (which got its info from Fred
Sherfy, author of the book Asahiflex and the Pre-1959 Asahi Pentax cameras, a
guide to identification and collection), the production of the Asahiflex I
began in 1951 and AOC released the Asahiflex IA in May 1953.

In A brief history of the Asahi Optical Corporation
(http://digilander.libero.it/aohc/selart16e.htm), it says ...in late 1951, a
prototype 35mm single lens reflex camera was ready...After further modifications
and refinements, the new camera, called the ‘Asahiflex’ was put on sale on the
Japanese home market in May 1952

I had read elsewhere (but I don't remember where) that the production lines for
the first Asahiflex began rolling in February, 1952 and the cameras came on the
market at shortly after that (this would mesh with the May 1952 date given above
for the cameras hitting the home market).

The Unofficial Pentax Collector's Starter Page
(http://www.concentric.net/~sherfy/special1.html) says The Spotmatic Series is
a fine line of cameras that generally spans the time period of 1963 to 1975,
which would make 2003 the 40th anniversary of that particular introduction.

work (fractal patterns) but it is also used to take pictures for the
alumni magazine. Our communtications office actually has an E-20, which
they use contstantly. If you can live with a fixed, 40 -160 zoom, it's
a good camera and, at least from our point of view, produce good images
up to 8x10. (Note that the e_10 is 4.2 MP and the E-20 is 5 MP. The
handling is identical, although the E-20 has faster processing). If 4
mp is enough, the E-10 is a good deal at $1100 USD.

I work for a photography studio in Kansas and this is the way we do all of
our weddings. We have wedding packages that provide the customer with a
variety of options that include, among other things, a specified amount of
our time (i.e. wedding coverage) and two proof books with negatives. They
are basically paying us for our time and the end product. What they do with
it afterward is their business. We have been paid before we ever expose the
first frame. No hassle. We don't have to track negatives for years, or
handle reprint orders, or be pigeonholed into shooting certain album
shots. We have more freedom to create an artistic representation of their
day and our clients are free to arrange and present the images in a way that
pleases them. We probably don't make as much money as we would if we did the
reprints and albums. But our customers are very happy and we have less
stress and less work, more time to ourselves and more creative freedom. And
if you saw our prices you would think we are anything but Budget Wedding
Photography. In fact our clientele seems to be becoming more discriminating
each year..

I think we will start to see this kind of thing more and more. As
soon as an image has been digitized in a quality manner, you really
have no control anymore (aside from the ethics of the client). You
are better off getting paid for your skills and expertise rather than
getting screwed on the price of use of the image later. It does mean
that it is important to be creating lots of images.

what makes you think you had any control before? the only difference was
that duplication always lost some quality in each generation before so
after a while, it wasn't worth duplicating. now it won't and duplications
are just as good as the original. witness CDs and music.

Hmmm, I smell some trolling here, but I'll bite, just 'cause I'm a fun guy.
;-) Do you know with ~certainty~ that Pentax doesn't have the tooling? (By
tooling, I mean injection molds for the plastic, diecasting molds for metal
parts, jigs for the formed metal parts, etc., etc.) They might have dumped
it years ago, especially if it had worn out. Or it might be sitting in
boxes, perched on several pallets, in the middle of a warehouse somewhere.
That does happen. Ask me about some of ~my~ company's old tooling If
the tooling still existed and was still in reasonably good shape, Pentax (or
an interested third party) could start cranking out Auto 110s if they
believed it made business sense. Remember the Mingca? (Chinese K1000
knock-off, made using the old worn K1000 tooling, IIRC.)

Nothing personal and just a general observation: I don't think too many
people here have the slightest idea of how real products are designed,
developed, manufactured, supported, marketed or what any of this costs.

Sounds like a ~guess~ rather than an observation. And probably a very
~good~ guess that there aren't too many on the list who have a full
appreciation for the whole process, the costs, etc. I'd venture to say,
though, that there are perhaps more folks on the list than you might think,
who have a very good appreciation for the process of product design,

If anyone had *really* posted the world's funniest joke we'd all be dead now.
Unless they posted it in German, of course!

(All through the winter of '43 we had translators working, in joke-proof
conditions, to try and produce a German version of the joke. They worked on one
word each for greater safety. One of them saw two words of the joke and spent
several weeks in hospital. But apart from that things went pretty quickly, and
we soon had the joke by January, in a form which our troops couldn't understand

Yes, I too have seen this coming. I have found that often these
manager-types are more prone to using the company funds to
purchase digicams printers and then become instant do-it-
yourselfers. Needless to say the end result is usually some
marginal quality inkjet print taken w/ some digi-zoom replete
w/ converging-lined buildings and grainy (extrapolation type)
printouts. They then take this up to the local Kinko's-type
outfit and have expensive flyers made up. But they pat themselves
on the back for all the money they saved by not hiring the project
out to someone like me who has the knowledge, skills equipment
to do a quality job.

The one thing that has been working for me is to charge for
 my working time.

I am leaning toward this approach, as well as just making all
sales any/all usage and being done w/ it. They seem to think
they have bought everything anyway, so up the price a bit and
let 'em run w/ an exceptional bargain (which seems all they are
interested in). The profit margin will still be good and hassles
much fewer.

I suspect that some of the art of photography will become more
obscure as time passes. People's quality standards are continuing to
 drop as cost goes up.

Again, this is true. Folks are becoming used to much lower
image quality in general. My next foray may be some sort of
portrait-oriented one primarily, rather than the commercial ad
field. I also learned that perhaps 80% of the concerns here really
have no budget for current ad materials. Most run for many years
w/ the same material - after all the beach draws folks anyway so
all they feel they need is bare minimum materials.

Wouldn't be surprised if it sold more than all of Pentax's 35mm slrs

I just have to think that anything that is good for the 35mm slr market
in general is good for Pentax, too. Once you have people looking at
buying to a new product category, some are going to want to see what
their options are. If only Pentax would try a little harder to get
bodies and lenses on the shelves of retailers, they could probably pick
up more market share just on store feel alone.

You can see a look of semi-confusion on the faces of Rebel users when
they first pick up a Pentax (at least the ZX-5n). And you can tell it's
something like, Hey, this feels different than I thought it was going
to. Followed by, Hey, how come my camera feels sort of cheap?

Re[3]: Others with NO interest in digital?

2002-10-03 Thread Bruce Dayton

Herb,

All the more reason to charge for your skills and time upfront. I
think the ease of duplication has caused the average person to truly
devalue the item. But the ability of the client to create the
original is still beyond them so that is what you can charge for.
Placing a value on something as intangible as an image is hard for
them to swallow. But placing a value on your time and
learning/experience is quite easy for them to come to grips with.

For those who want to know, I charge between $50 and $100 per hour. It
sometimes depends on circumstances, who the client is, etc. I have
never had anyone balk at the cost. It is in the same ballpark as a
skilled, independent contractor in this area.

By working this way, the client knows pretty close to what the cost
will be upfront, and knows that they can do with the images as they
please with good conscience and no subsequent expenses from the
photographer. To date, I have retained the negatives - partly because
I want my work represented properly (good lab) and the client almost
always goes for the cheapest possible solution (cheap, crappy lab) and
makes me look less skilled. Usually along with my proofs I pick a
small number of 8X10's (5-10) that I also have blown up and let them
see them. This gives a good representation of the quality of work and
lab. I quote them the cost of 8X10's and I have only had 1 case where
they didn't want them also. In that one case, they kept 9 out of 10.
So they really know what my work looks like and what a crappy lab will
do for them.

I'm sure I'll learn and adapt more as I go. I can say, that Medium
Format has been quite major in the customer's willingness to pay. Both
in legitimizing me as a working professional (many hobbyists use 35mm,
but very few use MF) and in the quality of the prints. I hate to say
it, but you can really see the difference between 35mm and MF even at
8X10 - not to mention the ability to crop (clients ask for it).

Sorry for the ramble.

Nothing personal and just a general observation: I don't think too many

I prefer the digital work-flow regardless of the media that I'm shooting, I
consider scanning film to be both tedious and a waste of my time let alone
sloppy WRT colour control. Image files derived from a film source are not a
direct substitute for a first generation digital image file.

I sort of agree with Vic and with Rob.. I don't _need_ a digital camera.
However, in my case, where I don't do the darkroom thing, I have to scan all
my images I'm interested in. A 4+MP digital camera would probably produce
better results than my 2400DPI Photosmart and save me the scanning time as
well.
There are cameras in this resolution realm, but they don't have the macro
flexibility that I require -- I don't just want to do macro, I want to do
macro at different focal lengths for different effects and be able to do 7X
macro photography, both of which require switching lenses (even in the 35mm
SLR equipment).
I looked at the cost of the DSLRs, which could allow me to do this, and they
are comperable to my buying a new 4000DPI film scanner, which will simply
blow them away resolution-wise. This, therefore, is my solution to staying
with Pentax equipment, which I love, for the moment. When DSLRs surpass such
24MP scans, I'll reconsider switching (unfortunately, likely to another brand
since Pentax just isn't a photographic innovator anymore).

So, while I can sympathize with Rob, I agree with Vic, that digital isn't
always the right answer.. yet. However, a lot depends on one's needs.

Hi, Robert,

I have no interest in digital photography right now, nor can I see myself taking
the plunge anytime soon. I must admit that if the costs come down, and Pentax
or someone else comes out with a k-mount body, I'd consider it.

But, I do love film, and I'm still (after 30 years) learning what I can and
can't do with it. I'd like to get a dark room going, and learn what I can and
can't do with that. I've got a long way to go before I've completely explored
bw film, let alone what digital can do. So, even if I do eventually go digital
someday, I can't see it replacing film for me, only supplementing it.

I must admit that I do enjoy the digital meanderings of this list, along with
all the wailing and gnashing of teeth regarding Pentax' foot-dragging on their
DSLR. But for me, it's just interesting reading at this point. As I've said on
this list before, I think film has a long life ahead of it yet, if somewhat
diminished due to digital inroads.

Let me congratulate you on starting a great thread. It's fun to see all of us
quiet (of late) non-digitalians suddenly rearing our heads and roaring!
