Bill, Bill, Bill,

It was not 30 degrees out. It was not night time, it was pre-dawn. I could
not be driving out and about that cold with the top down. It was only
probably in the 50s. One of the good things about an 8-cylinder is the
amount of heat it produces. Crank up the heat and all is well.

I recall driving about with a friend in January with the vents properly
pointed and the fan on high :-)

If I bring a PDMLer, I will try to take it easy on the way to GFMtn,

Now look here my lad. I know that time may have a habit if seeming to
stand still in the sleepy burbs of Florida, but it looks like it's
actually going in reverse!

End of May > pub meet London

Beginning of June > NPW

When I was younger, I could do anything to excess. Through years of
patience and self-sacrifice, I have finally put the brakes on, throttled
back, dug my heals in. The only thing I do to excess now is spend money
that I don't have...

I'll have a couple a beers, a few glasses of wine. I'm much more of a
listener than the talker I used to be. If you say, ' What you having?' in
the bar, I'll listen!

Cheers,

Oops! It just goes to show what happens when I spend too much time at work.
It has gotten to the point that I no longer have a personal life and have
totally lost the sense of time. Is it really the end of February???

This just means that I cannot make the pub meet in London :-( I really have
to make it out there sometime... Maybe this year is not it? Though I did
want to make it ere my cousin leaves London. I try to travel on the cheap,
it allows me to make it out internationally...

Maybe you can convince me to make the trip across the pond during GFMtn...

difference to me this year. I will already be making a "loss" due to
purchases such as *istD, studio lights, new PC, laptop etc which already add

doesn't really help that much when I won't be paying any tax anyways... (It

I thought I should add my support to the PAW concept in its current
incarnation. I'll personally try to average one photo a week (or
fewer), I guess. I disagree with the suggestion of limiting the photos
to those taken with Pentax equipment - there's already the PUG for that,
and besides, I find it interesting to see what people have to complement
their Pentax SLRs, and how well it performs. :-)

Amita Guha wrote:

Frankly, it seems that there are enough people here who like
the concept just the way it is.

I agree. I think the PAW is great the way it is. It has already allowed
me to display a couple of shots here that I couldn't have posted on the
PUG for one reason or another. We always talk about the gear on this
list, or about technique, but we so rarely discuss the results, or what
moves us to shoot, except for once a month when the PUG comes out. This
is a great way to share our common passion. And I think it's great that
it's drawing some lurkers out into the open.
Quite frankly, the endless talks about gear or cars or what have you can
get tedious, but I don't complain about them because that seems to be
what everyone wants to talk about. Likewise, if a lot of people are into
the PAW and you don't like it, just ignore it.
And I agree with Shel or whoever it was who said that it shouldn't be
restricted to just Pentax gear, since we're not hosting it on
PDML-sanctioned web space.

Lucky sods, a roll of Fuji Velvia 100 135-36 RVP here is AU$20.61 (Vanbar), E-6
D&D processing without mounting is AU$8.80, 1GB Ridata Ultra-Pro 52x CF card is
AU$401.50 (Power in Numbers). So here 1GB card is equivalent to 13.5 rolls of
Velvia processed and unmounted (or about 15 rolls if you buy 5 roll pro-packs).

The Tamron 24-135 handles well, is fairly sharp at all f-stops, and
the magnification factor is handy, but it's not well suited for
outdoor pics on a sunny day even with its tulip hood.

Flares badly, to say the least.

Any suggestions that would mimic a soft focus lens reasonably well?
Diffusers are not at all the same type of animal.

Zeiss softar filters are supposed to be good but very expensive. With the
*ist-D I think I would just use gaussian blur in PS, duplicate the
background layer first, then apply, then use the erase tool carefully on the
eyes, eyebrows and mouth. If the eyes are sharp the soft focus looks less
artificial. finally bring the opacity on the blurred level down to 80-85%,
again makes it look less artificial.

Contact me off list if you want to see a couple examples

2004-02-25 Thread Stan Halpin
These shots do not do a great deal for me. They are like
many which I have taken when I have traveled - they remind
me of a time/place, but they have little impact for anyone else.

Of the four, I like the broad view of City Hall the best.

The others, I am not sure what you are seeing. For example,
the one with the balcony and roof line: is this of the
balcony railing? The roofline in the background? Both? As it
is, the elements fight one another. If you were slightly
higher, then the roofs would seem to rest on top of the
railing, and you would have an interesting effect, maybe. If
you were lower and shot with very shallow depth of field,
then the roofs would be hidden and you could have a nice
'texture/detail' shot of the railing.

With the shot of the full City Hall, if you had moved
forward a bit you might have gotten more of a reflection of
the tower in the river, plus you would have eliminated the
distraction of the railing in the foreground.

All minor things, just some thoughts for you to try next time.

Thanks for sharing!

Tamron was making some laughable "SP" lenses in recent history, and the
SP35-105/2.8 & SP28-105/2.8 are the most expensive junk thus far (I had the
35-105/2.8). Fortunately, they learnt from their huge mistake and start
making some nice & affordable SP lenses again (17-35/2.8-4, 28-75/2.8,

Cord tells me that the reason they're not stocking the istD

Yes, I think so.

>>If it unscrews, I could maybe adapt the head to a Pentax zoom tube.<<

The part that gets unscrewed is the lens itself. The bigger part left
behind is called the focusing mount. Unfortunately the 135 cannot be
attached to a Pentax zoom tube. My technician used the Pentax zoom tube
because it happened to fit the 90 lens, that's all. He made another tube

We've been having bad weather too in N. CA. The fog and rain and/or cold has
continued and continued. Been a bummer. Approaching the end of Feb. I tend to
expect more spring.

Looks like traffic we have in the Bay Area. Could be the local freeway at
rush hour, in fact.

Usually not quite as bad ... poor weather slows the commute
down quite a bit.

I LOVE watching the commuters from my window while enjoying
a fresh brioche and a nice cuppa cawfee.

I grab a shot from the window whenever there's interesting
weather or something else that catches my eye. They're
nothing much, just a record of what's going on out there.

If you can find a Lloyd, go for it.
Simple design, and easy to use.
It has one weakness which is the felt light seal needs to be kept
clean.
I have 2 Lloyds, one is over 30 years old now, and have never had a
scratched film because of the loader.
The other loader I have is the Watson, which is plasticy and
gimmicky.
It does the job, but not as nicely as the Lloyd.

Re: *istD - I got one, and it's great!

2004-02-25 Thread Mark Erickson
Nick,

I really like my MZ-S interface too. I would have been
happy if Pentax had just taken their MZ-D design (you
know, the full-frame DSLR that they never released) and
redone the electronics with a sensor like that in the
*istD. It would be s nice to have a consistent user
interface between digital and film SLRs.

Of course that approach would have precluded a couple of
the cost-saving elements of the *istD, namely the plastic
body and less-functional version of the K mount. Oh well.

--Mark

Well the *istD body I "accidentally" bought on eBay for
£732.56 arrived OK. It appears brand new, the batteries
are sealed, and it has a proper Pentax UK
warranty registration card. Seems a bargain.

I've started to play with it and have a couple of observations:

1) The viewfinder shows much less of the image than the LCD
Monitor. Perhaps the film cameras are like that too but
the delay between taking the picture and getting the result
makes it less obvious. Strange thing is that the effect
seems more pronounced with distant subjects than with closeups.

2) Ergonomically it is nowhere near as good as my MZ-S.
It's not bad, but the MZ-S is a masterpiece. Why Pentax
couldn't have left at least some of the controls in the same
place mystifies me. The green button is in a particularly
awkward place given the frequency with which it is used.

I need to get out to take some proper pictures to see
how it handles in the field, and to see what the 1.5 crop
means in practice. I am well pleased with
it though, and think I got a bargain.

Nick

I suspect that something is broken here, but I'm wondering if I just have a
setting goofed up...

The built in flash on my Mz-S just plain does not work. I pop it up,
nothing happens - when in program mode the shutter and aperture speeds
don't change and it does not fire. Wireless flash with the AF360FGZ also
does not owrk, but the flash unit seems to work when it is mounted on the
camera.

I fiddled around with the flash button on the camera and have it set with
just the flash indicator in the LCD (no wireless, redeye, highspeed,
etc.) I also checked the Pentax function settings for functions 9, 10, and
11.

I'm guessing that it will need a trip to Pentax repair - any ideas about
what might disable the flash or other settings to check?

RE: "late" performance

2004-02-25 Thread Winston
Not really, like I said, 77 is an outstanding example. Very sharp across
the f/stops at least from wide opened to f/11. I never used anything
smaller than f/11. But I agree that some new Nikons are best at f/5.6,
like the 17-35/2.8 and other fast zooms/primes.

I agree too that Nikon 24/2 is not a good example either, although it's
24/2.8 is very good. I also like my Nikon's 20/2.8 and 28/2.8. That's
why in the end I rarely used 24mm.

I get the impression that this is fairly typical for Pentax designs.
Is this because they use fairly simple and traditional optical formulas,
or perhaps because the Pentax community tends to shoot in such a way
that such optimization makes sense (i.e. scenic and landscape)?

Most modern Nikon lenses seem to peak about f/5.6-f/8.0 which is a
better
fit for me--I rarely see f/11! With few exceptions, most lenses are
pretty nasty both wide open and fully stopped down (due to diffraction).

I'm told that a "perfect" lens should actually produce best performance
wide open. Some of Nikon's big teles apparently come pretty close to
this, peaking a stop or half stop down from wide open. This is not
to say that these lenses are close to "perfect"--I suspect it is a
question of design optimization. Apparently said long fast lenses
are not so good stopped down past f/5.6 or so. Of course shooting
a 200/2.0 at f/8 is madness!

>I wished Pentax makes something wider than 31mm and longer than 100mm
>Limited lenses.

I'll second that. While I'm not likely in the market for any FA
limited lenses (MAYBE the 77) they'd be a lot more tempting for me
if they ranged a little wider and longer.

>I'm not satisfied with the FA 24/2. Too much distortion,
>and sharpness could be better at wide f-stops.

Interesting. I've got a Nikkor AIS 24/2.0 that does not have a great
reputation and did not fare well in my tests. I'd have expected the FA
24/2 (which has an aspheric element, yes?) which is a later design
apparently aiming for a very high standard to be superior. Fortunately,
I
don't use a 24 much, preferring 28 and 20. For some reason both Nikon
and Pentax seem to have done better at these focal lengths than at 24.

Pentax never has been very good at naming their equipment. This is after
all the company that made the "ME SUPER", a great camera with an ego
problem.

Yes, yes, Cotty... You want me to have a go at fondling, yes?
I haven't been following the thread in detail, but I recall something about
tans bottom and now she says she fondles AS she photographs. Am I to step in
here?
Sure, I'll do the fondling if it helps. Just send me an airline ticket, one
tuna sandwich and a note to the captain where to take me and I'd be most
happy to oblige.

Okay, batten down the hatches and hide the booze*, Marnie aka Doe is coming
to GFM!
Well, I am mailing off the registration fee tomorrow by express mail, so if
it gets there in time, that is.
I'll be staying at night off mountain, because I feel I am not up to

This should be a kick.

RE: PAW (Robb's)

2004-02-25 Thread Tanya Mayer Photography

Sorry Bill, but with respect, I have to agree with Lasse here. I too, felt
that the shot appeared to be too dark. It is kind of "muddy" on my screen
which is callibrated sRGB.

I have done very similar tight crops on many occasions and love to "break"
the rules, but for some reason, whether it be her expression or maybe the
lighting, I am not keen on this shot...

I think it would probably lend itself to black and white better than colour,
although the contrast is very low so not sure about that. I just don't
really like the colours which appear very "flat" to me.

*eek, sorry*

tan. (this is the first time I have ever posted anything negative about a
photographer's work, usually I just refrain from posting anything if I don't
love a shot, but thought I'd better get me some balls... so to speak).

I guess you're welcoming comments on it?

My monitor is not calibrated, why I sometimes - as when looking at this
picture - ask myself whether it renders everything a bit too dark, or not.
She, or her eye/gaze, doesn't really "come through" to me, so to speak.
You already mentioned the nose, which did disturb me a quite a bit.
There is also something about the tight crop or position of the head - or
maybe I even would have liked a further crop of the left (her right) cheek
and up to her chin, in order to pull forward her left eye a bit more, but
maybe that wouldn't be a picture you wanted.

Thanks,
Lasse

Most modern Pentax lenses peak (relative to maximum sharpness and contrast)
between f4 to f8.

I get the impression that this is fairly typical for Pentax designs.
Is this because they use fairly simple and traditional optical formulas,
or perhaps because the Pentax community tends to shoot in such a way
that such optimization makes sense (i.e. scenic and landscape)?

Most modern Nikon lenses seem to peak about f/5.6-f/8.0 which is a better
fit for me--I rarely see f/11!

True. But considering what the 15/3.5 cost, imagine the price of a
