Re: Darkroom or Digital for beginners
Digital photography can provide instant gratification. One of the most often heard comments here and in other places is that people like the idea of seeing their photos immediately. They can edit on the LCD display immediately after the photo is taken. Moving to the "darkroom" side of the equation, a great many people do little or no editing of their photos, small tweaks at most, such as cropping, a little color correction, and that's about it. Instant! More advanced folks use more features in their editing software, but still don't go very far into it. And a skilled PS user can get a good result in less time than it'll take to set up the darkroom for a printing session and make some prints. Yeah, some folks spend a long time on their photo work, but I'll bet that, had they used a darkroom previously, they spent a long time there, too, in order to get a print just right. And regardless of what work one does with editing software, the pic can be viewed on the screen and printed in less than five minutes from the time the exposure is made. And that includes boot up time Shel Belinkoff > [Original Message] > From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Date: 5/28/2004 11:47:11 PM > Subject: Re: Darkroom or Digital for beginners > > In a message dated 5/26/2004 10:13:40 AM Pacific Standard Time, > [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > We live in a society fuelled by instant gratification and disposable > everything. Short Optio S4 review
Hey Gang, A few weeks ago, my brother called me up asking for a recommendation on a digital camera to use for snapshots and for shooting stuff to sell on ebay. He insisted that it be extremely small. How small? He felt his Canon A40 was too big. So naturally, I turned him onto the Optio S4 and he excitedly bought it. He agreed to lend it to me for a couple of weeks. I used it today while going on a 10K AVA walk in downtown San Antonio. Here are some of the photos. Nothing to swoon over, I have to shoot quick or I'll be left behind. http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=401012 Some impressions: 1) There isn't much control one can exact over this camera in terms of exposure - just Program AE with some exposure compensation. Man did I miss having aperture priority. Oddly enough, it gives you the exposure data. Why? I dunno. Sure there's exposure compensation but quite frankly, I think Pentax was out to taunt the users of this camera . 2) Autofocus is pretty quick but can be hit or miss. I had several shots that were discarded because they were soft. 3) I was not very pleased with the lens. There's quite a bit of distortion at the wide end. Flare control seems pretty poor and there was noticeable purple fringing from time to time. In macro mode, the corner can be really soft. It was really noticeable in this photo: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2397442&size=lg The corners seem to have...distortion and blur at the same time. Not too pleasing, especially when I printed it. 4) It's extremely difficult to get shallow depth of field. 5) Shot to shot time is pretty respectable and it turns on and off pretty quick. 6) The LCD monitor was not very easy to read in daylight. 7) The On/Off button is way too close to the shutter release. Every now and then, I found myself turning it off instead of shooting. 8) The four way control button is not very easy to use. 9) Overall, exposure was pretty good. 10) Women love this camera. They ooh and ahh at the very sight of it . I short, it's a neat little camera to use for vacation snaps. It's incredibly portable. Battery life is decent. It operates quickly and quietly. For more serious photographic ventures, this one's best left at home. Mark

Hi Bruce, Thanks. She had some complexion problems, so I did some work with the clone tool. Then, I selected her eyes, pumped up the blue and the saturation. This focal length didn't interest me much in 35 mm. format, but on the *ist D it is a different matter -- an angle of view equivalent to about 117 mm. in 35 mm. format, and f1.8 to boot. I can see a use for that. I use my fast primes mainly in low light, so I need them to be good wide open and stopped down a little. Can owners of this lens let me know how it performs at wide apertures? Has anyone who has used it on the *ist D noticed any chromatic aberration problem? Bon weekend, everyone (as they say in Mali). I visited eight of the shops on Bob W.'s list last month, and want to say the service from the folks downstairs at Jessops (New Oxford) was excellent. I'd like to add one shop to Bob's list: Vintage Cameras (at Kirks Cameras) http://www.vintagecameras.co.uk/. It is located in Sydenham, which is about 20min south of Tower Bridge Station on the light rail system. Vintage has a good selection of Pentax, but my target was 120 roll film folders; I bought a Zeiss Ikon Ikonta 521 in mint condition - very nice. You might also want to visit Calumet (mostly medium and large format), just north & west of Euston Station; they're closed on Saturday. Jim www.jcolwell.ca

Re: Scene from a Mall
Why, thank you, Lon. You flatter me. Thanks to everyone else who commented on this one, as well. I won't waste the bandwidth to name each of you. I almost didn't print it up. It came from my first roll after getting the Leica CL back from the shop, and I really didn't feel particularly inspired that day for some reason. Things weren't clicking, and I never got on that "roll" that sometimes happens when you get the flow going. On the whole, that roll was pretty bad. There were a bunch of shots similar to that one, but after looking at the contacts a few times, that one seemed to emerge from the dreck. So I blew it up, and it seemed to work, both for me, and those who've seen it. I've gotta go back and look at some old negs, to see what gems (if any) may be lurking in the darkness. Anyway, I'm away for the weekend right now, back Sunday night, then Tuesday off to GFM, so I'm not likely to be around much (the place I'm going to this weekend has a really slow computer, so I may be able to lurk a bit). Re: OT - Music on the Road
So far, I've found a good quality set of headphones more satisfactory than speakers suitable for travel. Friend has devise that allows use of more than one set of headsets while maintaining impedance match for player -- forget the brand. Just my experience. Extension tubes for K1000
This is likely a rookie question, but...I'm looking to get a set of extension tubes for my recently purchased K1000, but am somewhat unsure what to get because some of the lenses I also bought are SMC Takumar screw mounts...and I also have the k mount SMC-A 50mm f/2 lens that came with the camera. If I got a set of screw mount auto extension tubes, would that work with the K1000 and the screw mount Takumars if I just put the K Mount Adaptor on the part of the tubes that connect to the camera? Inversely, it seems that I would not be able to use the screw mount auto ext. tubes with the K mount lens and K mount body, unless I used two adaptors, which seems a bit much. I'd like to get a set of K mount ext tubes, but they seem to be a bit harder than the screw mounts to find at the moment (at least on ebay). If I did, I assume I could use my screw mount Takumar's with them if I put the K mount adaptor on the lens and connected that to the extension tube - right? Lastly, what about using my screw mount Takumar's with a reverser ring? If the ring was a screw mount, would I be able to use the K mount adaptor on it? And vice versa - if the reverser fitted the K mount, could I use the K mount adaptor on the opposite end to connect the screw mount adaptors? Thanks in advance for your help, and I hope that all makes some sense! Scott

I am afraid this is Jostein's part. The autopug is his baby. If you are in doubt please send the submission as mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a sensible Subject. Otherwise it gets caught in my Spamfilter. Then I'll check whether it made it or not and submit it myself. It might have something to do with time outs. June PUG comments
Hmmm, most of this month's submissions are far too good to be clichés in my opinion :-) A few that caught my eye: Jaume Lahuerta, "Big Ben" - ok, so maybe there *are* no original shots of the Houses of Parliament, but that's a damn good try :-) Frank Theriault, "Your Humble Servant" - nice cliché, and you've thoughtfully obscured your phiz behind a dirty great lens... ;-) Bruce Dayton, "Camping" - possibly my favourite this month. Ray Ford, "Sunset at Sagamore Bridge" - wins the "best cliché" award imo, and is a nice sunset to boot. Cotty, "Kept" - is that a feather in your cap? :-) S

Hi Alan, when you get into the Levels or Curves window, press the Options button to customise the way AutoLevels and AutoColour and AutoContrast work. I suggest replacing the 0.5% clipping values with something much smaller, 0.2% for really low contrast images or 0.1% (or less) for images where you get heavy clipping of shadows/highlights using the Auto command. This applies to Photoshop and almost all other programs using autolevels/... If I have time, I may get into this discussion of "reality". Perhaps later :) But some manipulation is inherent in the medium of photography, which is not real. It's not capturing whole reality (like some painters were afraid first time photography came out), it's about capturing its small slice. Good art uses any medium to its advantage, so photography benefits from reductionary approach, IMO. Just capturing a vista as the eye saw it is impossible (because eye sees in many many small movements, while it sees the photograph printed as a whole), and if anybody tried that (all the superlarge posters of waterfalls), it usually accounted to no art and no reality as well! PUG favorites
I don't think I've ever seen a PUG where I only had one or two favorites out of all the great shots, but this month, "Duck! " by Max McRae really jumped out at me. The position of the bird at the moment of capture is really interesting...not a cliché at all! The angle of the light and the blurred background are also great. I also loved "istDaCat Again" by Joseph Tainter. I like how the narrow DOF makes even the cat's cheek blurred, and how the angle makes his head look big. :) Coincidentally, both of these shots were taken with the istD; I'm paying a lot more attention to what can be done with the camera now that I have one!

Comp is just wonderful, as is exposure. Thanks for the comment. Honestly though, the background did really look like that! I was tempted to increase the contrast to make him completely silhoette, but it really looked artificial at that point. It was backlit and very saturated looking, my daughter did much of the lighting stagework for this play. All in all, a terrific photograph, Gonz! Thanks for posting it and allowing me to ramble on a bit... BTW, are there any copyright issues that you know of? In other words, did you ask permission to take photos? I always ask, and more often than not, they say no (I always respect them). Once, an usher kept giving me the evil eye during intermission, because some jerk took a flash photo, and usher thought it was me (after he said "no"). I actually went up to him and told him it wasn't me, and showed him that I didn't have a flash, and I wouldn't have used one at a performance, but I don't think he believed me. I mean, why would I ask, and then not respect their wishes. Anyway, just curious if you asked. They were fine with it, being college students and all. If I had space, I would put it on a web site to give them some exposure. Re: OT - Music on the Road
I am currently copying many of my small collection of CD's to MP3. In my case I am doing it because it is much cheaper to do that than to buy a CD changer. Basically I find I can get about 7 CD's onto one MP3 encoded CD that I play in the DVD deck. I will someday replace the stereo in the truck with one that will play MP3 CD's as well. You can get a portable MP3 capable CD player at Wal-Mart for under $30 as well, a cheap alternative for an expensive (but smaller) MP3 player. 7-8 hours of music without having to change CD's. It works for me... -- Shel Belinkoff wrote: Hi Gang Call me slow, but I just discovered how easy it is to copy CD's to the hard drive using the Win Media Player. Re: Is it Real or is it PhotoShop?
Of course what we've seen in photographs over the years is someone's attempt to portray their version of reality (mostly). The very fact that we are trying to record a 3 dimensional scene with a media (among other limitations)that has only 2 dimensional capability, takes it out of the realm of true reality (whatever that is). -Original Message- From: Tom C <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Is it Real or is it PhotoShop? OK Gang... I'm grappling with the issue of manipulation. I have a shot I took with the *istD. It comes nowhere close to my recollection. So I've put 3 versions up on www.photo.net. The 1st is the original, including water drops on the lens. The 2nd is one that's been processed in PS using Image--> Adjust---> Autocontrast. The 3rd, using the 2nd as a base, reduces contrast by -30 on the scale as PS sees it. Not very scientific... It's probably not a fair test because of the water on the lens in the original, and because somehow I managed to size them slightly differently, but that's the only manipulation I made. The original was simply resized. Numbers 2 and 3 were converted to a .psd during manipulation and then saved as a .jpg. I think the third matches my recollection far better than the first... and I think the second is pretty questionable. If any of you have insights, comments, etc., I'd like to hear them. http://www.photo.net/photodb/presentation.tcl?presentation_id=249195 In analyzing what I see and feel, it brings questions to my mind regarding manipulation... 1. (showing my stupidity) Assuming many of us have always just taken our film in to be processed most of our lives, we've come to accept the returned result as THE photo. 2. It's quite difficult to remember exactly what we saw, a day, or in this case about a week, after the image is captured. 3. In the past I would have looked at photo 1 as a waste... now I see it differently. 4. Is all this moot? Has photography, the images we've seen from "the masters", and from popular modern acclaimed photographers, always been a rendering of what was seen through the viewfinder, and never been THE reality? Rob... PAW 1 - Hummingbird
Thanks Rob... No I haven't attempted to adjust brightness yet... that would be cheating wouldn't it? ;) Back beating the same old horse... one of the reasons I'm hesitant to do adjustments is I often can't clearly remember the scene so I don't know if my adjustment becomes a 'correction' as opposed to an 'enhancement'. For instance, I have some storm/rainbow shots that I recently took with the *istD. They look pretty washed out, not as I remember seeing them. When I do an auto-levels on them in Photoshop, man it makes a big difference and is more what I remember. But the difference is so huge and the results so much better that I feel guilty accepting the change... Any coments on this? Thanks, Tom Tom C. It's pretty much all automatic, and it astounds me how much info is on the disk. This opens the door to copying music to some sort of portable device for use in the car and while travelling. I've found that it can open up even more than that. It allows you to manage all your music on the computer. I copy the CD and store it away, no need for racks and racks of CDs to be accessible. With a home network (wireless network that you can set up for $150 or less), you can stream the music to your stereo system and even control what is playing via a web interface. What sorts of devices, apart from an iPod, can be used for this purpose? Amazon.com and all the other usual places have big lists under MP3 and Digital Media Players. They range from tiny things with under 32MB and cost less than $100 to "jukeboxes" with 40GB or more costing over $500. I have a 20 GB Rio Karma which I've put about 275 CDs on and I've been very happy with it. Does MP3 or MP4 (that's the format, right?) sound pretty good compared to a home system or a good sound system on the computer? That is the subject of flame wars that combine the worst of both audio and computer flame wars! As someone else mentioned, there a lots of choices, both in the method of compression and the extent of compression. The "standard" MP3 is 128 Kb/sec which results in about a factor of 10-15 space savings. I think most people can hear a difference between music compressed at this level and the uncompressed version if played side by side, but a good many people don't consider the difference to be particularly significant. If you are more picky you can compress less but of course your space savings goes down. It seems a fair number of people that are relatively picky about sound can live with compression at the level of 192-256 Kb/sec. DanZ -- * Dan Zaharevitz * Camp Springs, MD * [EMAIL PROTECTED]
