A quote attributed to Albert Einstein is that the difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. For the sake of philosophy I'd be willing to equate limitlessness with infinity in this case. :-) Jostein 2008/4/3 Bob W [EMAIL PROTECTED]: anywhere close to infinity is it possible for anything to be close to infinity? It might be worthwhile to include m42 Pentax lenses, but I would draw the line there. BTW, although you can fit a Leica 39mm screwmount lens to a Pentax with adapters, it won't focus anywhere close to infinity. It will be macro only. Not exactly useful. Paul -- Original message -- From: P. J. Alling [EMAIL PROTECTED] Well you've set yourself an enduring hobby. Any m42 lens and the earlier m37 and c, (video, 8mm(?)), mount), Bessamatic or Kodak Retina IIIS/Reflex with the proper adapter, I think there may even be a Leica S (m39) mount to m42 adapter which opens all of the Leica, and copies such as Canon, (ah think of using a canon f 0.95 50mm), RF lenses, not to forget Pentax 645 and 67 lenses. Then there's the TX T4 Adapall etc. These are just the adapters I know of. The scope is daunting and the number of different lenses is astounding. I know, there is Bojidar Dimitrov's excellent k-mount web page (and some others), but thats not what i have in mind, because kmp has a pure technical perspective and it is restricted to Pentax lenses, while i would like to cover *all* lens producers that are usable on a Pentax body, and my project will offer more participation for users, it will be possible to rate lenses, add comments, there will be a list of external resources (URLs) pointing to lens reviews users can add to, etc .. somewhat like a Wiki but mostly with structured data (so for example one can easily filter for ultra wide lenses that offer automatic aperture, have a availability rating greater than 3 and a overall quality rating greater or equal 4) and a set of permissions with what a particular type of user(anonymous, registered user, staff, admin) can do or not. i think you get a rough idea. Problem is, this is some amount of data i have to collect and to maintain, thats why the whole thing is database driven which in turn means, no html skills will be necessary to add and maintain data, and I'm optimistic that I'll find sooner or later someone who's interested in helping me. Second Problem is, i don't know 99% of these lenses, and thats why i come to you guys. Getting functional characteristics of a lens (weight, size, focal length, aperture etc) is in most cases no big problem, thanks to google, but what i would like to have are descriptions of the lens, preferably from someone who had it in his hands and did some shots. Pictures of lenses are also very welcome. Of course contributions will be attributed and pictures will have a explicit copyright notice, with a link to the homepage of the contributor or something similar, except the contributor does not want to be mentioned. Re: Is the K20D Popular?
The D300 may have better high ISO. Some of the testers seem to think so. Although, again, I don't know if they're setting noise reduction values in the K20. If they are, they never mention it. I think Adam said he found the D300 noise at high ISO comparable to that of the K20D. The D300 is certainly more expensive and probably a bit better built as a consequence. It doesn't have in-body shake reduction. That would be a stopper for me, as I depend on hand holding a lot with older lenses. In the end I suppose it's mostly a matter of which direction your kit will go. I think it's usually better to settle on one brand, so that you can optimize your lens selection. K20D and D300 in camera focus adjustments
I'm on the fence as to adding the K20D or trading my D200 for the D300. I have not heard about my K10D repair for 1o days now. Both are reported by users of this list and my Nikon BB to have very good high ISO quality. K20 has buly in SR. Both seem to offer user adjustment of focus. I'm just wondering is this mentioned in the manual for the K20D or just general knowledge that you can do it. Those to i have spoken to on my Nikon BB said the D300 offers user focus adjustments for lenses, but advises against it. Could that be more of a, lets put the disclaimer in so we have fewer returns from users screwing up their cameras.??, or a general concern on their part. Re: Is the K20D Popular?
Based on Paul's 6400 shots and my own, I'd say the two bodies are pretty much comparable at high ISO's in RAW. I'd suspect the D300 has a definite lead for JPEG results (Nikon's done the best in-camera JPEG's I've seen), but I don't shoot JPEG and neither does Paul so I've not been able to compare directly. The D300 is noticably better built than the K20D and definitely has better AF. But it's also a fair bit more expensive. I'd say the differences in build and performance are more than justified by the price difference (In either camera's favour). The deciding factor in my case was a trio of Nikkor primes (20, 35, 85) I already owned that would have cost me $1400+ to buy in Pentax mount. -Adam On 4/4/08, Paul Stenquist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The D300 may have better high ISO. FS Friday as new K10D with warranty (body only)
OK, I have taken the plunge and upgraded to the K20 and now need to recoup some of my outlay by selling my trusty K10D. Bought January 2007. Have taken about 1500 shots with it. Should still have 20 months warranty from the Pentax Pro shop wher I got it (Kamera Altrincham otherwise known as http://www.equipmentexpress.co.uk) as there was a 3 year warranty on it. I have emailed them today to make certain this can be transferred, but I don't imagine there would be a problem. Incidentally I got my K20D from them too because that free warranty is great. I also got their price down to match competitors who arent giving any extra warranty! Comes boxed, without a mark on it and with all the CDs, instructions, cables etc. If you didn't look at the picture count you wouldn't know it was not new. Comes with the first firmware upgrade (V1.1?) to enable wireless flash but havent upgraded it since then so you could still get into the service menu and adjust the focus (something I never got round to because my lenses were very accurate on it). Offers in the region of £300 delivered in the mainland UK, or it will go on ebay shortly. Please feel free to ask any questions, or to request a picture etc. Cheers Rob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

You can turn off high ISO noise reduction. Or you can choose weakest, weak, or strong. Long shutter speed NR, on the other hand, has two settings. Auto turns it on in respect to temperature and conditions. On applies it only at shutter speeds longer than one second, I believe. So in effect, it's off for almost all applications. I went to San Francisco yesterday. Spent a couple of hours at SF MOMA enjoying the Lee Friedlander retrospective exhibition as well as the several other photography exhibitions underway at present. That was good but then I went to the First Thursday evening at 49 Geary gallery building. The Steven Wirtz Gallery had the opening reception for Michael Kenna's latest, photos from Mont St. Michel and New York. Stunning work: I could spend hours looking at his photos. I had a few moments to chat with him and pressed him to produce a book of the New York photos ... someday in the future. It's just amazing to see work of this calibre. If you have the opportunity, it's well worth it to get to the city if only for this show. I only have 2005 and later digital files on my working drives. I opened up my hard drive (and about three dozen of CDs made up to 13 years ago) archives and have reviewed 76,000 photos with no errors at all, selected out about 3600 of them for further grading and use, copied them to my current workspace, etc. They've loaded and many have been edited in Lightroom since. I'd say the file archiving and validation system I've built is working rather nicely, and the media is proving to be robust enough for my needs. Usually, for me, if a disc is bad, it is bad from the beginning. That's why you should *always* run a verification/validation pass immediately after burning a CD/DVD, and make at least two independently from the original working set of files. I'm sorry but this is not rocket science. It's pretty easy to achieve highly reliable archives with today's systems, with a minimum of fuss and computer savvy. Re: Pentax Fires USA Sales Staff
I've been hearing rumors like this for a couple of years now. About a year ago when I went to the primary Pentax pusher in this area, Milford Camera, I was told that Pentax was replacing all their sales reps., the implication being that Pentax was in more trouble than usual. It didn't seem to happen then. I don't think I'll worry about it happening now, until it is widely reported, which hasn't happened at this point. Ken Waller wrote: Can you say April Fool? The LX is the Pentax Uber Camera of the 1980's. A full system in some ways fully equal to the Canon New F1 and Nikon F3 exceeding both in some areas falling short in others. It is the center of a full professional system. The LX wink was current on the list between LX owners. (I guess no one else was supposed to use it, though how that could be enforced was beyond me). And you can't help, as you're Mac and I am PC. I know Nero can be told to verify the data after the burn is complete. I'm always suspicious until I've stuck the CD into another drive and made sure that at the very least, the directory structure is in place. I recall reading a technobabble article a few years ago about the number of errors that can happen during a normal burn process, and how if you keep copying the same data from CD to CD to CD, eventually, you will end up with an unusable coaster, and also that a CD can self introduce errors just sitting there, slowly oxidizing. I don't recall the source of the article, but reading it was enough to make me start looking into hard drives instead of optical media, and to stick with good quality writers and discs for CD burning. Re: Pentax Fires USA Sales Staff
Probably wishful thinking on the part of the store personnel. Distribution of goods, relationships with local retail outlets, has been a weak point of Pentax for a long time. Treated like mushrooms is an old metaphor that describes local stores in this relationship. We can only hope that the new Pentax actually makes some moves to improve the situation. Whether a 100% turnover is the answer or not is hard for anyone outside to discern. stan On Apr 4, 2008, at 10:22 AM, P. J. Alling wrote: If you try googling on it you get nothing. Re: Pets in your home, photos and fee
You're probably not far off the mark with $60/hr to start with. Certainly don't charge any less. You might be with the client for about an hour but you've still got your processing time afterwards. You could even up the price a bit more (say $75) and include an 8x10 or a smaller print package. Make up a few flyers with some examples of your work to leave at the pet store. Weren't you talking at one time about doing a photo shoot at the store? That would maybe kickstart your business and help you get referrals. You could then charge a nominal fee which would include a print special offer! and it would get the customers back in to the store too. When Nate wants to shoot the cats, I stand behind him and wave my fingers over his head, sometimes while whistling at them or whatever to get their attention. It works pretty well at getting them looking in the direction of the lens. Treats are good as well if you want them to stay in one place while you shoot. In my blissful ignorance, I've always done the verify. I guess that's because I've always used either the apple sofware or toast. Now I use Toast 9 exclusively. It's excellent. HELP - Need advice with a potential problem
Hi, A friend of mine is thinking of buying a pentax DSLR and wanted to try a couple of old F Series lenses on a K10D. He got the lenses to my place and upon looking through the viewfinder I was horrified to see that the lens in question seemed to be fogged. Upon closer inspection the lens seemed to have quite a bit of dust and fungus growth inside. The lens did not stay on the body for more than a couple of minutes coz I immediately took it off. I am worried that I may end up infecting my own lenses with fungus.. Given that the lens did not spend more than a couple of minutes on my K10D what is the risk of the fungus getting to my own lenses via the body. I've never had a lens with fungus on it so I don't have much experience in this regard. Re: HELP - Need advice with a potential problem
I wouldn't worry about it, although i might wipe the lens mount with a towel dipped in bleach. But be careful not to get bleach on the plastic. That lens might be recoverable too. Tell your friend to take it to an expert camera repair shop. If the coatings haven't been etched by the fungus, it can be fixed. I have a beautiful lens that I bought for next to nothing ten years ago because it was fungus infected. It was disassmebled and sterilized by a pro. It came back perfect, and has worked flawlessly ever since. The color saturation, contrast, and resolution are all excellent in my quick and dirty tests and with ZERO visible CA across the APS format. I am very happy with this one. Historical Pentax Lens Street Prices When New : First Draft Database Available NOW
I have just spent the evening compiling the first revision of PENTAX historical new street prices. This first rev. includes screw and K lenses of spring 1976, k an m lenses of Feb '79 and Oct. '81. These dates are interesting because spring '76 both a full line of screw and K were being sold and the K mounts were brand new ( although nearly all were reworked m42 designs) , feb '79 the M series were brand new, and late '81 was near the dawn of the A series. Some suprises to me, especially when adjusted for inflation. The first 80-200 F4.5 zoom was astronomical in price! The early K135-600/6.7 had an inflation adjusted price of over $3500 in 2007 dollars, thats got to be the most expensive K/M lens ever made. Over twice the price of the K15mm F3.5. Seems like the SMCK Bellows 100mm/4.0 was the cheapest real SMC K mount lens ever sold by Pentax. The k135/2.5 lens, which is now a prized collectors item was being closed out DIRT cheap in the early 80's, most likely it was too big in the M era! Anyway, I am going to vastly expand this as time goes by but this first version seems like it would be somewhat interesting to some Pentax fans I would think. Anyone can feel free to publish this if desired, it would have all slipped out sooner or later, but compilation credit would be appreciated. It was work. I got all the data from old magazine ad from back issues I bought on ebay. If anyone has any other data from magazine ads from other dates, I would glady add to the database compilation and redistribute. I would welcome others comments on these price values vs. lens models too. http://www.jchriso.com/temp/PHLPN.xls jco -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Pentax lens prices - historical comparison
Those of you who have a filter that prevents you from viewing postings by a list member who goes by his initials which include J and C and O, you might want to unfilter for a bit and look at his 4 April 2008 8:47:56 PM CDT posting. He has begun compiling historic lens prices, and in the message he provides a URL to download his work in progress. A nobel venture; hopefully, if you have some data to add to the mix, you will set aside for the moment any differences arising from past discussions... stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: My first A* Lens
I realized Pentax may have made a big goof with their lens designations with the A series. There was no designation for COMPACT fully auto (A) lenses. If there was, the A*300/4 would be the most Mish A lens ever. I still cant believe how short it is. If I knew that I would have bought it a long time ago. Pentax blew it with their lens designations for sure. They should have called the compact A lenses MA or something similar, not just A. UNLESS, does A* mean compact A? I always thought it meant high performance A, not compact A. jco -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of P. J.
