Have a look, the process is simple - photos get distributed (as far as I can tell, purely at random) and fellow PPG'ers are given a chance to vote thumb up or thumb down. Then, whatever passes certain threshold is reviewed by some kind of board or whatever and then photos either get accepted or not. Given the randomness of the first stage of this process, I see nothing that cannot be explained here. One day you submit a photo and the bunch of guys looking at it favors photos of this genre, and the other day it is not the case. So, the same photo can be either through the peer review stage or not. I should refrain however from passing a judgment on this process... If you don't, that's the culprit. I will pay special attention to this "local connect" suggestion, Godfrey, as it *seems* that once it crashes for the first time I doesn't crash any more until I reboot the computer, which would be well in line with some peculiarity of WinXP64 initialization of net interfaces. Re: F 17-28mm (a different view)
Remarkable. This lens is rarely mentioned, and yet your email is immediately beside the one in my inbox in which I (tearfully) confirm the shipping of my beloved 17-28mm lens. I will respectfully disagree with Mr. Robinson, but then my tastes do not normally go to enjoying the extreme fisheye effect. We also don't know from your post whether you intend to use this on a Pentax DSLR or film camera (or both). I used mine only on Digital and loved it. Some examples of what can be done with it and the way it gives you just slightly skewed results (unlike any other lens) can be found in my ad (now in the sold section on PF): RESENDING to list, since I forgot to send the original plain text. http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/sold-items/110985-sale-%5Bsold%5D-pentax-f-17-28mm-fisheye-zoom-pentax-original-worldwide.html Regarding: http://www.tristatecamera.com/lookat.php?sku=PENF1728*&store=1&levels=003100 730214&sti= They are one of the many less-than-up&up photo dealers. I would just about guarantee that if you purchase this one you eventually find that they either do not have it anymore (it hasn't been made for many years) or is a used one that's condition does not match the photo accompanying the ad. If it does, then $179 is a steal... but I fear it is they that is going to be the thief with this lens. Also, the 17-28mm on a full frame (35mm) camera has an equiv. for the Pentax DSLR of today: The DA 10-17mm. However, owning that lens is still not the same as the subtler lines that the F 17-28mm will give you on your DSLR. Were it not for my current financial situation, it would still be in my kit. Re: 17-28 fisheye (was [No Subject])
Colin, If you provide a subject line, you'll get more responses. Buying the 17-28 would be good if (1) you shoot film, or (2) you are sure that Pentax is going to produce a camera with a 35mm format sensor. The 17-28 fits the Pentax digital bodies nicely, but doesn't provide much fisheye effect--it becomes the 35mm equivalent of 25-42mm. As for the merchant... OT - Visiting Sydney, Australia in September
Hi All, If nothing drastic will happen between now and then, I will be in Sydney, Australia, during the week of September 19-27. I am coming there for a scientific conference. I know that Brian Walters is in Sydney, but I also remember mentioning that there were 3 or 4 PDMLers in Sydney. So, my questions are: 1. I'd appreciate all suggestions as for what to see/visit in the city (including some local restaurants), and in close vicinity (we are planning on renting a car for 1-2 days and going to Featherdale Wildlife Park.) The conference will be held at Sydney Masonic Centre, and the hotel we reserved is within 2-3 blocks from it (in case you can recommend some restaurants there). 2. If somebody is interested in meeting (for a lunch, photowalk, to show the city, etc.), - that'd be very interesting, - please let me know (probably off the list, - and then if there are several people, - we might coordinate a mini-PDML meeting). Re: The Pentax Photo Gallery
Bruce, I clearly remember your pulling your 50+ images with the explanation, if I recall correctly, that you intended to resubmit them to determine if they would be accepted under the current standards. You may have been one who began to submit images early on and at a time, perhaps, when submission were ravenously accepted in an effort to develop a gallery. As time passed and the gallery inventory increased, standards for acceptance seemed to stiffen. It was my assumption that you wanted to "test" your images against the current and seemingly more stringent standards. I recall the respect and admiration, actually expressed by some, you garnered by so doing. >From time to time I checked your gallery in the hope you would be pleased at >the rate of re-acceptance. Re: OT More local photogs rights controversy
Quite a few years ago, we visited Katmai National Park, which is the source of most images a grizzlies catching salmon by standing in the falls as they try to jump over it. There were 2 professional photographers on the float plane from King Salmon to Brooks Lodge. They both had permits. Based on the conversations I had with the one seated next to me, they weren't required to get the permit, but getting it gave them certain privileges that others didn't have. I had to set up my tripod on the photography platform overlooking the falls, where I was secure from wondering bears. The permitted pros could approach closer to the falls, and could get different angles, but could not cross over to the other side, which was were most of the bears would emerge from the woods. For the most part, the pros stayed on the platform with the rest of us, as it had the best view of the action, but if the platform got too crowded, then they could, and did, go off on their own. That was 15 years ago, and things may be quite different now. At the end of the day it seems it's down to the laws of the land and the land itself. In the UK, we have lots of private land (obviously) but we also have lots of footpaths, bridleways and byways which cross private land. According to law, as an individual I have the right to 'pass and re- pass' one of these rights of way. The law doesn't say anything about stopping to take a photograph or film. However, the law does say that as an individual I am permitted to photograph or film from a public right of way. There is no distinction between private, commercial or any other type of photography. When I am working for TV news, I will often access a footpath across private land to get a shot of a location or building that cannot be seen from the road (which is also a public right of way). Of course I have been accosted by irate landowners over the years, but to be honest, never had a problem.
