Re: What's the going rate?
On 1/12/10, Godfrey DiGiorgi, discombobulated, unleashed: In all seriousness: never. I've had editors tell me everything from I don't know to supplying a highly detailed rate chart, and I've had editors tell me they couldn't afford the price I set when they didn't have a rate chart, etc etc, but none have ever indicated they were uncomfortable with the question. How could they be? They're in business ... arranging a business transaction .. just like I am. Are you uncomfortable or put off if a provider whose services you need asks you what the budget for a shoot might be? Must be the British. When I get asked for a quote, I take into account my daily rate in balance with the nature of the work and the client's history with me (including non at all). I have to make a living and so if I asked each client what his/her budget was for the job, and indeed if they even answered, then I'd either laugh them off the phone or adjust my rate upwards accordingly! Seriously - my rate varies by only a little. There are plenty of companies offering my services and we all charge very similar amounts - where I can undercut is that I can not only organise the job, but I also undertake the writing, shooting and editing myself. Others may have to sub-contract where necessary. I think maybe the nature of the work has a lot to do with it - selling individual photos may promote the questioning about budgets, but on projects that I typically work on, we're talking about several days' work or an entire job. The client is likely getting in quotes from other sources also, so while trying to be competitive, I also have a living to make and my rates are set accordingly. If I work for less than my determined minimum, I'd go bust fairly quickly. Targeting the upper- middle to top-end of my market is tough, but that's the background I have and the choice I made. Are you uncomfortable or put off if a provider whose services you need asks you what the budget for a shoot might be? Not at all - it's never happened though. If it did, I'd probably ask them to hold on while I checked my pockets. Re: Question about flash photography
You might find the metz 40 a bit of a pain with some of these accessories. A great design in some ways, it suffers from the fact that all accessories are designed for more normal shaped flashes. Metz themselves make (made?) a bounce card for it, the Bounce Diffuser 40-73, which I picked up cheap with one of my used 40 series flashes. Dunno how easy these are to find, but I wouldn't pay too much for one, considering you could make one easy enough. Diffusers like stofen, fong, et al, work pretty well where you can get some bounce. They throw light ut in all directions, and it comes back from all directions. This is great in normal rooms, etc, but if you're in a huge hall/theatre the benefit may be minimal. If you're in close enough, some benefit can be had from a larger unit like a fong, but not so much as a softbox/large reflector. The lumiquest SB-III or style softbox diffusers simply work by increasing the area of the flash, so you'll get softer shadows. Even still, you have to be reasonably close for these to have a huge effect, but they do work well at close range. - Peter -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: GESO: Romania/Austrika
I found this to be a fascinating set – not at all typical of travel pics and certainly not narcissistic. There is something profound about the pairings. I found myself looking for the linkage, and I was disappointed when the slide show concluded. The only two that I would eliminate are the forest and the lake. They just don't fit. Love the shot of the crowd, where only one man in the rear is in focus. My eye immediately searched for the point of focus, and its discovery was rewarding and interesting in that the subject was looking back at me. Well done. Re: Teleconverters?
The A 2X teleconverters are very good optically. Of course because you're adding glass, a lens plus converter can never match the performance of the lens alone, but the A 2X converters are among the best I've seen. Note that I said converters, because there are two. The A2X-L can only be used with certain long telephoto lenses. It has a long snout and can't be attached to other Pentax lenses. The A2X-S fits all Pentax lenses. I use the A2X-S once in a while with an A400/5.6. It yields good results. Re: Now this is why I wanted my own scanner
Oh wow. By different I didn't mean hard. I just meant you have to go at it a little differently than you do for digital camera images. Because I think that's where most folks have their problems. They expect scanning film to be just like a digital camera, and it isn't. It can be very very easy though. The V500 is an exceptional scanner (especially for the price), and I'm finding it very easy to use. Black and white particularly so. Don't let what anyone else has to say about it stop you. If you have a problem, ask; someone here is sure to know the solution. ~nick On Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 9:27 AM, Eric Weir eew...@bellsouth.net wrote: On Dec 1, 2010, at 10:04 PM, Nick David Wright wrote: Scanning film is a good deal different than digital photography. Re: GESO: Romania/Austrika
Good call Paul, I did eliminate that slide! About the length, I find it great when people end it wishing for more. I've found that with longer edits, i.e. 30 slides with 2 or more pictures, many people don't go through. it has to do with the web attention span, it's really rare that people are ready to go for a long time just clicking next-next :) I also found that very few people focused on the pairings, and the way it works or doesn't and on the overall flow of the slideshow. somehow, most of the comments are about individual images. Teleconverters
Eric, I've used two TC's: A2X-S and F 1.7X AF, both mostly for macro (or close-distance) shots. Here is an example of my first use of the A2x-S (with a zoom - since you asked): http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/WildAnimalPark/IMGP5086w2.jpg It was shot with *istDS. For detail, see this old post of mine: http://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg387319.html (The link to the photo is updated here.) I like both TC's. However, since I got my hands on the 1.7X AF, I prefer it. The AF adds some convenience. (E.g. I tried it recently in Sydney with Rob's 300/2.8, while shooting surfers and it was nice! - I hope to use the upcoming break to work on the photo backlog.) Re: Teleconverters?
Just to add a quick thought to Paul's solid advice, the Pentax A2L is considerably better glass, but the price goes UP accordingly. This converter, however, is made to be used with Pentax * lenses with recessed rear lens element. You've doubtless considered it, but the lesser powered converters (1.7, 1.4) tend to produce somewhat better IQ at the obvious loss of power. Re: Teleconverters?
I've used my Promaster 7-element 2X teleconverter with my 50-200mm kit lens to shoot birds and gotten *decent* results as long as the birds cooperated and as long as I stayed away from the farthest reaches of the lens. Of course, the maximum aperture on the 50-200 is f/4, so I couldn't reasonably expect anything more than just decent. I'm sure the Pentax has better optics, so you may have better luck than I have -- most assuredly if you have a wider-aperture zoom. -- Walt On 12/2/2010 10:12 AM, P N Stenquist wrote: On Dec 2, 2010, at 10:31 AM, Eric Weir wrote: On Dec 2, 2010, at 10:23 AM, P N Stenquist wrote: The A 2X teleconverters are very good optically. I'm thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0 , but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0 . Please help! Thanks, Troubled User. _ REPLY: Dear Troubled User: This is a very common problem that men complain about. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run EVERYTHING !!! It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0 . It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed to not allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under Warnings-Alimony/Child Support . I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 and work on improving the situation. I suggest installing the background application Yes Dear to alleviate software augmentation. The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE! because ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system will return to normal anyway. Wife 1.0 is a great program, but it tends to be very high maintenance . Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as Clean and Sweep 3.0 , Cook It 1.5 and Do Bills 4.2 . However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will cause the system to launch the program Nag Nag 9.5 . Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0 ! WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3 . This application is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system! They were the A2X-S and A2X-L. They were priced the same when first introduced. The L versions were less common and sold for more used. The Ls couldn't be used with every lens that was over 300mm. For example, the rear baffle on the A400/5.6 precludes their use. Both are excellent optics. Re: What's the going rate?
One thing to note is that you're not a photo editor or publisher, Cotty. They're buying services if they're booking me for an assignment. They're buying goods if they're buying a usage license for an existing photograph. Yes, booking an assignment is quite different from selling licensing for a photograph (or photographs). When I'm booking an assignment, the license terms is just a part of the total fees ... I establish the rates for the shoot, equipment fees, etc. But when selling the use license for photographs, I am a bit more flexible ... the goods are in the can and the negotiation is to get as good a price for the goods as possible while not losing the sale. The response I've gotten to the budget question is in the context of if you have this much to spend, I can enable you with a package that includes x and y and z ... where if you only have a smaller amount to spend, I'll have to exclude z ... etc. On Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 1:06 AM, Cotty cotty...@mac.com wrote: On 1/12/10, Godfrey DiGiorgi, discombobulated, unleashed: In all seriousness: never. Re: Teleconverters?
I've always been of the mindset to use converters from the same maker as the lens, tho I have never evaluated brand X convertors on brand Y lenses. I currently have the rear convertor A-1.4 X-S, X-1.4X-L and A2.0X-L have used them extensively when needed without any particular issue. The A2.0X-L is the least used for me. OT: excellent online print experience
Just wanted to share an excellent experience/result with an online service that I used recently. I was looking for a unique presentation for a print I wanted to give as a gift decided not to go my usual route (home print on an Epson printers then mounted/matted/framed by a local framer). I saw an add in a photo mag for bayphoto (www.bayphoto.com/metalprints) their 'metal prints'(you image printed on aluminum sheets). I liked what I saw downloaded one version of their ordering software, placed the order waited for the prints to arrive. They arrived today, a little over 1 week I'm totally satisfied with the results. They image quality is first rate and agrees with what I expected given the image on my monitor. They have several options I chose the 'float hanger' where they add a half inch thick spacer to the back that floats the image a half inch off the wall. Their pricing is reasonable if you compare it to the normal costs of mounting, matting and framing. I paid $19.50 for an 8X12 print ! (normally $26.00 - but a 25 % discount is given to first time customers) If you're looking for something a little different that the usual framed print - check them out Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I know one smugmugger who shows his things and doesn't care for it... not sure why. I've really become a smugmug booster... for a pro site the annual fee is only $150 and is well worth it... I may not be taking as much advantage of everything that I should - but it gets better all the time - the help staff is great. And if you can write code you really can control your site. You can join at $45/year and can remain a Student Associate for one year after graduation before moving up to the Emerging Associate level for the next year, and then on to Associate member for the next three years. And you may never get to the General Membership level where the dues are $335/year. I think Annie has other money management issues beyond the cost of ASMP dues. And any of those memberships will get youwellnothing. Those who hire photographers couldn't care less if their ASMP members. They just want to see a portfolio.
