My advice is, get it, either from your local dealer, or from
Canadialand. But get one. Your upper body musculature will thank you.
Might do some good works myself this weekend.

Re: Musings on image selection for the Annual

distudio.p...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi Guys,

Looking back at my Pentax images from last year I didn't shoot with my
Pentax kit a great deal, about 2400 images all up with probably 10% of
them sequences for panos, about 10% of images shot for myself and the
remainder records of events and family. I took the route of throwing
everything I shot in a folder and discarding what wasn't up to the
quality that I want to be submitting. As a matter of interest I shot
just over 1800 images with my s90 in the course of 7 months.

There doesn't seem to be a great selection to find three worthy images
from, I could go to past years but personally I would prefer to only
submit images captured during the year. That said I'm currently down
to 83 images and hopefully I'll have it down to a more manageable nine
or so by next week. Then comes the hard part.

How do you decide what makes the grade in the case of the PDML Annual?

Picking the only decent one I shot and adding two more to make up the
numbers

Seriously, I look at the images I've had printed during the year and
discard from the candidates those which have proved difficult to make a
successful transition from screen to paper.

Going back to my experience with my Blurb book, and given that the PDML
book will be printed by Blurb, I'm wondering whether it would have been
worthwhile soft proofing the candidates with the Blurb ICC profile.

Ok, so I don't know how I've pulled this off, but in the past four days I
have managed to put together a huge project for the Flood Appeal.

Tomorrow, I am going, under police/government escort to a little town called
Grantham. I use the term town loosely as there is nothing left of it now.
:(

It is the spot where over 10 lives were lost and there are still about 8
missing. It is currently a crime scene and even the towns folk are only
allowed limited access.

From 6am tomorrow (Saturday), until 6pm Sunday night, I will be there, K-7s
in tow, photographing the scene and its people for a calendar that I am
designing.

Don't ask me how but I have endorsement from the AIPP, Pentax Australia and
Qld Premier Anna Bligh, all of whom will be providing a Foreward and logos
etc for
Inclusion in the calendar. We have an initial print run happening of
10,000, and the Premier's office itself is paying for the printing! It is
going to be distributed to every
Newsagent in the country and possibly into Myer and Target department stores
too.

There was a meeting last night of the Qld Council of the AIPP, where they
elected to allow me to wear official AIPP attire, reserved usually only for
officials and judges
at the National Awards etc. Apparently, all of those at the meeting were
chomping at the bit wishing that they were in my shoes. The Chairperson
even exclaimed in
astonishment How the fuck did she manage to get in there?! To which a
highly respected photographer, who for some reason has taken me under his
wing this
past few months replied, Because she has BALLS, and she is a tenacious
little thing too!(He told me this story when I went to his studio to
collect the uniform today).

Exciting stuff, but to say that I am crapping myself is an understatement,
this is BIG time. This could really make or break me! Wish me luck!

Oh, and did I mention that I managed to get a rather nice lens on loan from
CR Kennedy for the expedition too?

Thanks, everyone, for your comments.

I left wintery New Jersey last Friday, after five snow storms in three
weeks. I am now in Maui, on vacation with my wife. The weather has
been absolutely perfect since we arrived. There was snow visible on
the top of the volcano two days ago, at 10,000 feet above sea level,
but at the beach, its around 80 F most of the day. We are certainly
enjoying the change.

Wherever you are, keep safe and warm.

645 is used more than 5 years, i love that camera. It handles well,

to friends and set to programm mode, if you need to.
Negs are not that big, but you will get that MF DOF, crisp details and
smooth film look, that you will never get from digital.

6x7 is different, you have to learn how to properly load film.
everything is manual. and you need another camera as meter, or use
external light meter. you get even more shallow DOF, bigger negs, but
loose that ease of use that 645 has.

Last summer i decided to shoot more 6x7 film, still i need to scan and
process lot of film (ilford delta 400, fuji neopan 400 and adox 25, etc)

I would suggest an alternative though. I have handled a few of the 6x7
variants, never owned one. Was never all that tempted to buy one. But I did
own a few 645's. And I loved those cameras! I gave up the last one a few years
ago, in part because of the difficulty/expense of scanning MF film, projecting
MF slides, etc. And in part because I found that I really needed to have a
single mode to work with, and chose to go with DSLR rather than (film based)
MF. But the simple 645 was the most pleasant camera to use which I have ever
owned. If you are thinking MF, give the 645 a good look. (And any investment in
lenses there will be repaid in a few years when you buy your 645D.)

Re: Well, I have a used 6 x 7 . . .

That's overpriced. You can find a camera alone on ebay for less than $300. I
sold mine to Dario for $200 after my first buyer disappeared. The lens sells
for around $150.

Good camera, but not at that price. Unless it's a 67II. If it's actually a 6x7,
it's at least 25 years old. If it's a 67, it's at least 15 years old. The most
recent model is the 67II.

Ok, so I don't know how I've pulled this off, but in the past four days I
have managed to put together a huge project for the Flood Appeal.

Tomorrow, I am going, under police/government escort to a little town
called
Grantham. I use the term town loosely as there is nothing left of it
now.

:(

It is the spot where over 10 lives were lost and there are still about 8
missing. It is currently a crime scene and even the towns folk are only
allowed limited access.

From 6am tomorrow (Saturday), until 6pm Sunday night, I will be there,
K-7s

in tow, photographing the scene and its people for a calendar that I am
designing.

Don't ask me how but I have endorsement from the AIPP, Pentax Australia
and

Qld Premier Anna Bligh, all of whom will be providing a Foreward and logos
etc for
Inclusion in the calendar. We have an initial print run happening of
10,000, and the Premier's office itself is paying for the printing! It is
going to be distributed to every
Newsagent in the country and possibly into Myer and Target department
stores

too.

There was a meeting last night of the Qld Council of the AIPP, where they
elected to allow me to wear official AIPP attire, reserved usually only
for

officials and judges
at the National Awards etc.

Oh, and did I mention that I managed to get a rather nice lens on loan
from

CR Kennedy for the expedition too?

Re: Well, I have a used 6 x 7 . . .

2011-01-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
If you really want a 6x7, you can be sure that Bill's camera is in excellent
condition and fairly priced.

Remember though, that to take advantage of those big negs, you will need either
a darkroom or a relatively high end scanner, like the Nikon medium format film
scanner. You can get decent scans on a good flatbed, but your results will be
about as good as what you'd get from an *istD or other relatively low
resolution digital camera. Been there, done that. Fun, but not very productive.

Blacks camera is the only place near me that i know of that still can

BTW i find it easier to use a light meter the on board one seem to

Christine,
Sounds like you've done your homework.

KEH has 6x7 outfits with the 90mm priced from $423 to $526, but they
are all BGN condition. If you've found a nice one, you probably aren't
paying TOO much... but you might find you can dicker with them a
little.

If the camera was mine, I'd be using it for BW almost exclusively and
doing my own processing and printing to save moola at a lab. Darkroom
may be your next frontier.

Remember though that not all 6x7 Pentax cameras are created equal. There are
four different models. And KEH bargain condition is generally quite good. It
would be hard to find a camera that old that would qualify for better than
bargain condition. While I think KEH prices are generally fair, they're not on
the lower end of the scale for used equipment.

Talk to Mr. Robb.

I hate you, Mark for providing a good reference.
It caused me searching for this book... :-)
Our library has only older editions (2001, 2004), so I ordered it
via interlibrary loan, also encouraging the library to purchase the new
edition.

In the mean time, I can see the electronic version of the 1st (2001) edition.
On page 3-22 it has the section 3. When your phtograph contains
people.

In general, you don't need permission to use a photograph of a person
if your use is editorial and does not defame or invade the person's
privacy (see below0. An eidtorial use is an informational use -- one in
which the photo is used to elaborate or illustrate and article or story.
For example, no permission is necessary to use a photo of a paratrooper
in an article about the Vietnam War. however, you do need permission
(known as a release or consent), for the uses described below.

* Your use is for commercial purposes such as advertising or to sell a
product or service.
Under right of publicity laws, you cannot use a person's name or image
for commercial (selling) purposes without obtaining a release. For
example, if you sell sweaters from your website, you would need
permission to use a photo of a model wearing one of your sweaters. This
right of publicity can survive a person's death (sometimes for as long
as 50 years depending on state law). There are some exceptions to these
rules. If your use is editorial -- for example, a photo of a fashion
model in a book about the fashion industry -- you can use the photo to
advertise the book without obtaining a release.

* Your use invades a person's privacy
[...]

* Your use is defamatory.
[...]

I am not typing it all up (it's a gif image in the e-book, so, I cannot
just copy-n-paste)- just the excerpts most relevant to the previous
discussion.

As all legal debates, it is open to interpretation (``It depends on the
meaning of the word the. ''), so you draw your own conclusions.
Personally, I think the situations described by
Paul fall under the category of editorial use described above.

Yes, there are a number of neon signs in the room, as well as televisions and a
variety of lighting. It's a challenge.

The establishment is called Snookers, and it's the contemporary reinvention of
the pool hall: part dating bar, part sports bar, but with lots of pool tables
-- around 30 I believe. The event I shot was the opening night of an 8-week
tournament for ad agency employees, many of which are attractive young ladies.
That's particularly true of the media buyers, whose job it is to get a good
deal for the clients from the folks who sell ad space and broadcast time for
internet sites, magazines, and television networks. In the old days, before PC,
the sales people at the various venues were called space cadets, while the
agency buyers were referred to as media bunnies. Of course, being a very
considerate and thoughtful person, I would never use that kind of insensitive
language.

Thanks, but you can find them all day long on eBay for not a lot more

film, since i'm such a cheapskate when it comes to paying for
processing these days.

This little camera is opening up a new door for me. ANY fool can shoot
a film when it is easily available, but it takes a really SPECIAL KIND
OF FOOL to get into it years after the film has stopped being
manufactured and distributed.
: )

I've just learned that there is a community of such fools. They
respool 16mm film, and once you get the hang of it you can apparently
do one in 3-4 minutes. You can get lots of different films in 16mm,
including infrared, TMAX 3200, and more. Those interested in reloading
110 may want to bookmark this page:

I could do all kinds of wacky stuff with this, like make a 20x24 print
from a 110 negative. It would probably look really abstract up close,
but you might be able to resolve it into an image if you could get a
football field or two away from it.

John, it's modeled on the classic compact RF and VF cameras
of the late 60's early 70's. The best of them were elegant
simplicity. A lot of cameras have been designed to look
like Leicas. This is designed to evoke a general look a
Canon TL Hi-Matic Electro* I'm only glad they didn't take
their inspiration from the Kodak 35 RF.

(An amalgamation of a number of different manufactures
classic RF cameras).

Still, I think it could work with interchangeable lenses even if
all the available lenses are primes. With the way they've
implemented the Electronic View Finder, the lenses wouldn't even
need an adapter for the viewfinder window.

I think it's a beautiful camera; classic styling and, as you say,
elegant simplicity. I'm even impressed with the fixed lens
they've chosen for it.

But what do you do if the focal length of the fixed lens doesn't
suit what you want to photograph?

What I always did when my only lens was a 58mm was to crop as
needed. These days you can also stitch frames together.

More likely, if the lens is too short, you crop in post production.
If the lens is too long, you get creative and look for alternate
compositions that are detail shots.

I understand how that would work.

Too long doesn't really seem as much of a problem, given the ability to
stitch frames. I'm already dealing with that in APS-C, where my 18mm
lens produces the F.O.V. that a 28mm lens would produce on my film cameras.

Too short is another matter. You can only crop in so much before you
begin to lose IQ. Are you going use a 12Mp camera to produce a 2Mp
image? Move in closer if you can, but sometimes you just need a longer
lens.

Note: I don't remember what actual pixel count they're specifying for
the X100, but I have a hazy recollection it's around 12Mp.

It doesn't have to be interchangeable lenses, although that would have
more appeal for me. A longer lens might be an auxiliary converter that
mounts on the existing fixed lens.

All other things being equal, a camera that could use a selection of
interchangeable lenses would appeal to me more than a camera that
offered a selection of auxiliary lenses that mounted to a fixed lens.
But that camera offering a selection of auxiliary lenses would appeal to
me more than a camera that offered no selection.

I'm not saying there's only one way to solve the problem, only that
it's a problem they have to solve if they want to sell this camera to
me. And even that isn't an absolute no.

If I found some style I wanted to pursue that a fixed focal length
camera suited, this one looks like an elegant solution.

light-sensative emulsion. Go figure! What will they think of next!?! I couldn't
figure out how to load said coated plastic into my K20, so I went digging
through the closet. My father-in-law's Leica legacy to me, a M2, seems to have
a jammed shutter. So it is off for a CLA. His Nikon F3HP seems to have an
electrical problem; installation of fresh batteries were not sufficient to wake
it from its long slumber. However, a near-by pawn shop has an OM-1 with 35-70

always liked the OM-1, had one for a couple of years, sold it to buy an

Re: Musings on image selection for the Annual

2011-01-21 Thread Cory Waters

Rob,
I'm very critical of my own photographic images. My wife gets
frustrated when we look at my take from, say, last weekend's outing, and
I'm all yeah, but the horizon... or M, there's a tree growing out
of her head. She's usually more of a Ohhh, look at the girls. Aren't
they having fun? type, though I do trust her eye when she's looking
with a more artistic intent.
I honestly don't know how to feel when people who don't *love* me are
honestly complementary of my work. The gallery opening in Chicago was
truly uncharted territory with so many people whose work I really admire
actually commenting on mine. I think that was nice, but I have my issues.
That being said, for the Annual, I'm picking out the very best things I
did in the last year. It's not hard. I used Lightroom to sort for the
year and added photos I *really* like (only about six) to a quick
collection, made my decision, asked my wife what she thought, did a very
little bit of processing (I actually ported one of them out to
Elements!) and uploaded the files.

Having 80+ favorite images from one year's shooting is, for me, not
likely to ever be a problem.

remainder records of events and family.

How do you decide what makes the grade in the case of the PDML Annual?

Re: Going 180 degrees the opposite of Christine...

2011-01-21 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I had one of those and my uncle had the Pentax 110 SLR. His was cuter,
the Minolta made better photos (and was a lot bigger). It looked like
Mr. Spock's Camera to me, was easy to old steady and get very sharp
results. The tiny SLR viewfinder and f/4.5 lens made for a focusing
challenge but with practice you could nail it quite nicely.

110 format was at one time available in Verichrome Pan. Long ago and
far away. Color negative, ASA 200, is about all that's available now.
Shoot that, scan and render to BW as desired.

I gave my Minolta 110 Zoom SLR to a good friend about the time I moved
to California in 1980. He used it for another decade and some,
documented his daughters growing up with it. About the middle of the
1990s he called me to tell me the sad news: he'd fallen asleep on a
train in the UK and left the camera on the seat in his rush to wake
and get off the train at the proper station, didn't think of it until
three days later. I bought another one then, in pristine condition,
that I put a few rolls of film through and enjoyed playing with, but
my photographic interests in subminiature film formats had long since
gone to Minox. I gave that camera to another 110 enthusiast friend
who, to the best of my knowledge, still owns and uses it today.

Great cameras. $5? That's a lot less than I paid even for the second one... :-)

downloaded 6 x 7 user manual I found on the net. I've read about the

depressed the shutter using the special trick when no film is loaded. I
found a photo lab very near my house, which will process 120 220 film,
create contact sheets, and create scans (120/220 negative at 18mb $1.00/per
neg 120/220 negative at 19-128MB $3.00/per neg).

I've mention many times that I'd love to do/learn medium format work. Film
is really my only way in to this kind of photography because of its
affordability.

So what do you guys think? Should I do it?

I think if it's something you want to do, you should do it.

What is the Mirror Lock Up issue? AFAIK, early versions of the 6x7 did
not have mirror lock up, and later versions did.

But I don't know about any issues with mirror lock up on the versions

It can be done, several folks I know from the Submini list still do
it. It's painstaking work for 110 format due to the backing paper and
the design of the cassette. You have to cut film to length, roll it
together with the backing paper, fit it into the cassette and
reassemble/tape the cassette closed all in total darkness. You also
have to get a few un-damaged cassettes ... sometimes difficult because
most photofinishing operations just crack them in half to get to the
end of the film.

The solution to the perforation problem is to use single perforation
16mm film (or slit 35mm film to 16mm width ...) and put the
perforations on the other side of the backing paper. The Minolta 110
Zoom SLR film advance/shutter cocking mechanism doesn't have the
secondary lockout of a pin falling through the film perforations, so
all you need to do is just wind the camera (one stroke is usually
sufficient) and make your exposure. Since 16mm movie film is not
pre-exposed with a mask like 110 film stock was, frame registration is
not a problem, and who cares if they're evenly spaced? ...

I'll have to get my Pentax 110 out again one of these days. I have the three
lens kit, like new in the box. I used it once. The results were quite good for
such a small negative, scanned on a flatbed.

I've just learned that there is a community of such fools. They
respool 16mm film, and once you get the hang of it you can apparently
do one in 3-4 minutes. You can get lots of different films in 16mm,
including infrared, TMAX 3200, and more. Those interested in reloading
110 may want to bookmark this page:
 http://www.subclub.org/darkroom/roll110.htm

I could do all kinds of wacky stuff with this, like make a 20x24 print
from a 110 negative. It would probably look really abstract up close,
but you might be able to resolve it into an image if you could get a
football field or two away from it.

If you really want a 6x7, you can be sure that Bill's camera is in
excellent condition and fairly priced.

Remember though, that to take advantage of those big negs, you will
need either a darkroom or a relatively high end scanner, like the
Nikon medium format film scanner. You can get decent scans on a good
flatbed, but your results will be about as good as what you'd get
from an *istD or other relatively low resolution digital camera. Been

When I responded with You're kidding. You did this recently? he said,

Re: Model releases/commerical use/etc

2011-01-21 Thread John Sessoms

From: Igor Roshchin

* Your use invades a person's privacy
[...]

* Your use is defamatory.

Igor,

Does the book say anything about selling prints (aka fine art prints) of
photographs containing recognizable people?

Here's what I mean:

HCB took this photograph of two ladies on a street in Washington, DC in
1961.

http://quicksaidthebird.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/henri_cartier-bresson02_800.jpg

http://preview.tinyurl.com/4dvbjhh

Does the book say whether or not the law required HCB to obtain a model
release from these two ladies (and from the taxi driver visible in the
background) before he could sell prints of his work?

Or, how about this photo of Dustin Hoffman signing autographs; a
possible instance where a celebrity's right to control their own image
might apply?

http://redriverautographs.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/829616actor-dustin-hoffman-signing-autographs-for-fans-posters.jpg?w=400h=300

http://preview.tinyurl.com/4q6vb8q

Hoffman is a recognizable celebrity, and while the only reason for the
women to be there is to obtain his autograph, it could be any
celebrity signing those autographs. Hoffman is an integral part of the
image, but he is not the subject per se ... the subject is the women
pushing and shoving each other out of the way so they can get a
celebrity autograph.

Would the photographer require a model release from Hoffman before
he/she could sell prints of the image?

Or how about this one?

http://www.athousandandone.com/photos/0/4493b3a8a4d24_s.jpg

It's James Dean walking down the street in a cold rain; hatless with his
shoulders hunched up, a cigarette on his lips.

But does the photo stand on its own even if you don't know who James
Dean was? Show the photo to a bunch of today's college students, and ask
them what it's a photograph of. See how many know who it is, and who he
was.

Does the image still have value if you take the celebrity away, if it
had been just a photograph of some unknown guy walking down the street
in the rain? I think it does.

Or, since someone mentioned that a celebrity's estate can continue to
control the celebrity's image for 50 years after the celebrity's death,
did the photographer just have to wait until 2005 before he could sell
prints of this photograph without a model release?

I contend that in none of these instances would the photographer be
required to obtain model releases in order to legally sell prints of
their own work.

But what does the book say?

When I started collecting, the Minolta 110 was one of the first cameras
I bought - I like unusual cameras that aren't all that expensive. I
also got one of the Mark 2 versions. Nowhere near as interesting - it
looks too much like a real SLR!

To my shame, I've never actually put film through either :-(

Does anyone happen to have any 110 Black White film that they would
be interested in selling? (Did they even MAKE 110 in BW?) I have a
yearning for GRAIN. (Back in my day, boy, noise was called GRAIN
 and we LOVED it.)

This actually may qualify as street photography here in the hinterlands. Not to
make Frank jealous.

Not related to the pic you posted, but I really like the dark gloomy
spooky trees further down the page.

Thanks Dave I have a hard time getting away from bright and sunny.

Going 180 degrees the opposite of Christine...

2011-01-21 Thread John Sessoms

From: Darren Addy

I don't recall ever taking a 110 photo in my life. While I would love
to have a Pentax 110 set-up, I'll have to stumble upon one locally
because they just bring too darn much money for me to justify
otherwise.

I think I have almost the entire kit, maybe 90%. I have all of the
lenses except for the Pancake. And, I've got the Soligor(?) 1.7x
tele-converter.

I had about 75% of the kit from years ago, and bought the rest from
someone here on the list who was getting rid of his 110 stuff. He sold
his camera and lenses, and I bought the left-over filters stuff like that.

Does anyone happen to have any 110 Black White film that they would
be interested in selling? (Did they even MAKE 110 in BW?) I have a
yearning for GRAIN. (Back in my day, boy, noise was called GRAIN

I will have to look in my freezer back in Raleigh. I'm pretty sure I've
got something from Ilford. It could possibly be a BW film in 110
format. If I do, it might be one of the early C-41 BW films.

Either way, I'll take a look and let you know off list if I find any. If
you don't hear from me, you'll know I haven't found any.

I know I have maybe a half dozen Kodachrome-64 110 cartridges left. I'm
pretty sure you can still get Kodachrome processed as a BW film by
Rocky Mountain Film Lab. Don't know how good of a BW film it is, nor
whether you end up with positives or negatives.
