K-7 replacement?

2010-04-27 Thread Cory Waters
Is it just me or is there like no buzz about any forthcoming replacement
for the K-7? It just seems that there's been a new camera on the
horizon about this time the last few years. They've been churning out
the PS cameras pretty quickly lately and there are these colorful KX
bodies.. maybe they figured to let the K-7 simmer a while.
Problem is, what am I supposed to obsess about? I still want a K-7 to
replace my K10 but certainly most who would buy one have one already and
the new body should be here to kick-start the obsessions again...

Ah, well... back to computer stuff.

Re: The PDML Annual has Landed

2010-04-24 Thread Cory Waters
Mine is here as well. There are truly a number of whoa... and
Dude... images in this book.
It's a good mix of images I've seen on the list and ones I haven't. I
see some image and glance at the name to confirm what I already knew
(Frank, Rick Wormer, Ann). Others are fantastic images from folks I
don't know. Still others are works from list friends who've surprised
me with their submissions.

Last year I got the dust jacket version. This year it's the image wrap.
I like this better though the cover does have a curious chalky sort of
feel.

I'll try to pick out some favorites during the day and report back.

On a bummer note, there is a problem with something bleeding into the
images on a couple of the pages. I've sent Blurb a request for a
replacement and will report how they do.

Found the EULA online... doesn't look good:
2.10 Dual Boot Platform. The Software is licensed for use on a specific
operating system platform. You
must purchase a separate license for use of the Software on each
operating system platform. By way of
example, if you desire to install the Software on both the Mac OS and
Windows operating system platforms
on a device that runs both of those platforms (i.e., a dual boot
machine), then you must first obtain two
separate licenses for the Software. This is true even if two versions of
the Software, each designed for a
different operating system platform, are delivered to you on the same
media.

Re: NAS

I built an Unraid NAS a few months ago and it's doing fine. I think the
free version is limited to three drives (two data and one parity drive).
The box is booting from the OS on a USB stick. I built a Freenas box
last year with a P3 motherboard but the throughput was way too slow for
the job. I put it down to the really really old chip set. Freenas has
a lot more options and gadgets than unraid but all I really needed was
storage on my network so I went with simple.

That sounds like pretty good news John. I got the impression you didn't

I've been down to the VA and so far it appears I'll be eligible for
the new GI Bill education benefits even while drawing my retired pay,
so I think I'm finally going to get to finish my photography degree.

It also appears I'll be eligible to re-join Tri-Care as my health

I've been working on my budget and I don't see any constraints. My

I'm still looking for work to fill in the time between now and when I

I've made a lens decision

2009-08-01 Thread Cory Waters

I have decided that for walking around at a place like Disney World with your
family taking those sorts of snapshots, you need to have a lens like a 28-200.
I'm willing to sacrifice the perceived loss of tack-sharp or fantastic image
quality whatever to have one fairly compact lens that has the wide focal range
that I really want on days like these. I've been carrying the 16-50 and the
50-200 but changing lenses is such a bother when you have all this other gack
we're carrying through the parks.

Amazon and BH don't seem to have a listing for the battery/vertical

no extra couple hundred dollars to spend later (unapproved, ya know?).
Also, I'm going to need to sell the K10, it'll probably be easier to

Home from GFM

2009-05-31 Thread Cory Waters
Arrived home safe and sound a little after eight o'clock. Got unpacked,
started watching the hockey game while trying to read the list posts.
GFM was a lot more hectic this year than the last couple. I really
missed arriving on Thursday and having that whole other day on the
mountain. I'm going to do a blog post like last year. I hope to have
it up in a couple days.

For now:
The Pentax group didn't fare as well in the contest as usual with only
three certificates (to one guy who's not on the PDML, or maybe he is but
he's a lurker) and one image in the dis-honorable mentions.

The K-7 is frackin awesome.
Fresh blood did good filling in for the missing regulars.
Cotty's son Steff is natural.
It DID rain.
Scott went home with more beer than he brought to the mountain.

Gonz wrote:

Well, I got an incredible surprise today. Seems that my wife and
daughter have been conspiring to send me to the mountain (ok, no jokes
here...cotty :). Grandfather Mountain... that is... They bought a
ticket to NPW and a flight to get there! I was handed the gift this
morning whilst on a Skype video call with my daughter, who is living
in Germany (she is another pdml member).

Each year I check out the NPW date and make plans to go there, only to
abandon them when I end up with a conflict, usually around a
conference where my company typically exhibits. One year another
Austin (TX) pdml member was even going to go with me if I went. This
year it was the same thing, but the economy being the way it is, it
looked like we were probably not going to the conference due to the
lack of money. Then I got layed off in late March when my company
basically went belly up, so plans were dashed because of the
possibility that I would not have money either.

So, here I come. If I had known way ahead of time, I could have
planned a drive there, which would have meant that I could bring lots
of gear in my truck. I.e. not just Pentax gear but camping gear, and
beer. By beer I mean homebrew. I've always wanted to brew an Asahi
Chocolate Stout, or an ME Super IPA (my first SLR). I've been
brewing for almost 20 years, first via kit, then ultimately going full
nut case and doing the all-grain thing. But I'm coming via plane, so
gear options are limited.

Ok guys, I need your help. What should I bring? Does anybody have
any room in their tents, RVs, etc? I could rent a mini-van and use
that as sleeping quarters I suppose (done that before, hehe). Much of
the stuff I'm bringing is probably going to be dominated by
photo-gear, i.e. a couple of bodies, my best lenses. Dont have room
for big bertha (the 6x7). I could buy a sleeping bag when I land, and
maybe a pup tent (done that too). How do you guys typically set up
there? I suppose that its mostly a tent type of situation huh? Does
it rain often during that time there? One thing I'm going to do to
make up for the homebrew is to bring some off the shelf stuff. Any
requests?

thanks and see you guys there...

How to get rid of lines

2009-04-09 Thread Cory Waters

http://cwaters.smugmug.com/gallery/7482073_ei6Gh#482823252_gjRZD-A-LB
I really like this picture but the power lines suck. What's the best
way to get rid of them in PS Elements or Lightroom?

Many thanks,

missed shots

2009-03-22 Thread Cory Waters
I have some tri-x in my MX. It's been there for a long time. There's
another roll in the fridge. I've been meaning to shoot these for a
while but the digital is just too damn easy.
Yesterday I decided that I would take the MX and a couple lenses with me
to the 2 mile road race my Emily was running (why are these things so
early in the morning? Isn't the road there later?) I brought a 50mm
and Doug Franklin's 400mm (Doug, I do still have this :))
Nothing really moved me to trip the shutter before the start. I was a
little worried about not having enough frames. Film had that weird 12
or 24 or 36 shot limit, remember? I wanted to get the start and the
finish plus a shot of Emily as she re-emerged from up the road.

The start: 50mm. She's in a pack and I lost her until she would have
been too small in the un-cropped frame to pick out. Manual
focus...Didn't even fire once.

Re-emergence: There she is, she's alone, shot framed, 400mm pre-focused
and stopped down enough for some DOF. Shutter hangs open. Battery?
crap. what's going on? shutter returns but now I need to displace and
change lenses, now...

The finish: I'm not in a good position at all. She's running by. I
got one shot off with the 50 focused at infinity. It's certainty over
exposed and not framed worth a crap.

Digital + Zoom + autofocus + auto exposure have allowed me to be a crap
photographer. I certainly LOOKED cool though with my black MX, black
mono pod and huge black lens. I bet the guy next to me with his $100
flip camera got a decent HD video of HIS kid running up the hill to the
finish though...

Woe is me :)

pod leg Q

2009-03-21 Thread Cory Waters
I happened upon a mono pod yesterday. It's a four section Manfrotto
680B and it was free. It was pretty well covered with dirt and crud.
The action of the tubes sliding in and out to felt really gritty so I
took it all apart and cleaned it up. It seems alright but the bottom
leg section is bent enough to make compacting it all the way a little
tough.
Does anyone know if such parts are available or how much the leg section
and foot might be?

Multiplicity fail :(

2009-03-08 Thread Cory Waters
I heard an interview on a podcast with this woman from Iceland:
http://www.rebekkagudleifs.com/ One of her series of photos that gained
her a lot of popularity is called Multiplicity. In this series, there
are multiple instances of a single person (usually the photographer
herself) in each image. I found the images interesting and decided to
try one with my daughter Emily being the subject. (here's the fail
part) I tried using the K10's multiple exposure mode and took five
shots with Emily in a different place on the swing set in each. The
resulting image is a very nice shot of the swing set with no trace of
Emily... I suppose the camera averages out the scene. In four of the
five shots there is no Emily at any given location so the end result is
no kid. I have to say, it was a little creepy to behold. I'm sure the
desired result could have been achieved in Photo shop but I was excited
about the idea of doing it in camera. Bummer.

Silly question (enablement)

2009-03-06 Thread Cory Waters
As a purely hypothetical , lets just say you had maybe $2500 to spend
free and clear of any guilt.
Lets also say you were inclined to spend said clams on new lenses.
We'll say you have a K10, the DA 50-200 18-55, a FA 28-105 f3.2-4.5,
and a FA 50 1.7 (there are some other manual focus lenses but we're
focusing on newer stuff).
Further, lets assume that we're going to buy new lenses from an online
retailer (probably Amazon) and they need to be available for sale now or
at least in a couple months.
Assume we shoot lots of family-type shots (kids, vacations, scenic stuff
from camping trips, etc), some sports (racing, football), and some more
artsy or flower stuff on occasion.
How would you spend it?

I've been thinking:
90/100 macro (from whom?)
70-200 2.8 (Sigma? A TC to go with it?)
DA* 16-50 (it's maybe too big for walk around/vacation and I wish it
went out to 85mm)
M Limited. But 43 or 31? 77?
The new 55?

PESO: Cades Cove Church

2009-03-01 Thread Cory Waters
The family and I went up to Gatlinburg Tennessee for a few days respite
this month. It seems silly now that we've lived here so long and never
made the four hour trip to see the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Very pretty country up there. Here's a shot of a church in Cades Cove:

Re: Another stupid computer question

2009-02-23 Thread Cory Waters
I don't know if anyone's suggested this but you may want to try
downloading the video card drivers from nvidia's site and installing
them again. If Norton or Windows screwed the driver up, a fresh
(probably updated) copy might be just the ticket.

Thanks for the help and suggestions, both on and offlist.

I had removed Norton from my machine already in the hopes that this

I do hope it doesn't come to a format and reinstall, but we'll just
have to wait and see what happens next time I restart this machine.

Thanks again
