I have no idea > how Pentax expects to gain market share especially as you can see Nikon > and Canon products in pretty much any big box store. I have been pondering this for quite some time now. A few years ago some of my family members went to China. I wanted some Pentax gear but the locals said Pentax wasn't popular there so no presence in stores. This October my wife went to Singapore and I had high hopes for some gear - again, no presence in any of the shopping malls. I got a hold of one address that carries Pentax but there was no time to get there. We have one chain that is kind of the official Pentax dealer here, can even see the 645D on display. But again - no presence in any of the other stores in contrast to Canon, Nikon and Sony. Pentax gear might be good (even if we have to take things like DxO ratings with a pound of salt) but no first time customers will ever know it. The only store that sells Pentax here is on a roll with Sony now and the only sales rep that was ever passionate about Pentax there hasn't been seen for the last 4-5 years, probably retired. So even if they are a Pentax dealer they are currently focused on selling boatloads of Sony gear. I don't see any real reason for me to jump ship, I just have to ask myself if I am getting and will continue getting a good deal on Pentax if they can't sell enough cameras and lenses because of the lack of presence. Ultimately as a customer I am paying more just because of their inability to sell and they don't have the money to make anything better because I can't possibly pay them enough to make any considerable difference to the R&D budget. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I still > occasionally shot with K-5, but is is extremely occasionally as my main > camera now is Ricoh GXR. > > Boris I have been playing around with the annoying x-pro1 for the past couple months. My spouse poses the following question "Why on earth did you have to go out and spend so much money on a camera that gives crappier results than the one you already have?". While I don't have a definite answer to that rather than a grumble that "I do take more pictures now, don't I?" I must admit that Pentax K-5 is still my favorite, I just wanted a new toy. The thing is getting quite a cult following despite its quirks and not having many lenses. That gives me hope for a Pentax full frame. If they do it right, they don't "need" a full range of current lenses, a decent commitment would suffice. Some extra x-pro1 quotes from my Pentax-conditioned spouse: "The pictures from this camera look wrong." "Aren't you done yet? You could have taken ten pictures with your Pentax already." "This lens cap is the most awful design I have ever seen, it just doesn't stay on." Stupid off-brand Pentax adapter won't mount the 50/1.2. I don't need or even want the extra bells and whistles of the other cameras but when Pentax comes out with a higher megapixel or full frame body I will get it. Until then I will be content with my current gear, it does work well for me. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

My wife was in Singapore recently and Lytro was supposed to have a shop in the airport terminal but she couldn't find it so that's one toy I won't be getting. One way I am going to make this easier on all the participants is that you can submit pictures for future dates and you don't have a tight 24h deadline for submitting your versions on the current dates. You could easily take a month off or work only on weekends if you submit a few pictures in advance. I don't see this as an exercise in technical perfection or a contest, rather as a game. I have a picture before me, what do I see in it? What do others see in it? You can aim for some consistency but you will probably fail unless you replicate all the scenes with Q-tips or cats or something. Definitely not a quest for a single good picture a day that would fit the set criteria. The 50 f/1.2 is nice. Very nice. But they are only manual focus and you wouldn't be able to casually focus it at f/1.2 in low light anyway. Unless your eyesight, hand-eye coordination and viewfinder precision are well above average and/or you use static targets. And if sharp-ish eyes and blurry nose/ears is your thing or you are not going to use it at f/1.2 at tight portrait distances. The going rate for the FA50 is less than half of the various 50/1.2. You get a little more real "extra light" over the f/1.7 and autofocus for that. I would get the FA50/1.4 right away if my f/1.7 wasn't autofocus or if I had a buyer for it. I never made any comments about 50/1.2 being inferior to other 50s at f/4 or anything to that effect. I said it was nice, what more do you want? :) It is, however, a "specialty" lens with an appropriate price tag. The reaction from the non-photographer members of my family when showing them kids pictures made at f/1.2 has always been "This is nice and all, but if only you had used a real lens, we would have decent pictures now". I hope my story is not indicative of any general trend and your lens gets well soon. Sigma 20/1.8 has become my go-to shoot-everything lens lately despite its size and weight. The moth - I desperately want to kick somebody in the nuts
So I opened the FA135 up last night. On the outside it looked like Pentax service had never even gone inside. On the inside - sure they had been there. I bought the lens new from the local dealer around 2002, it was the last one in stock here but it was still new and from the dealer. Somebody had tried to force the back element open with the wrong instrument, markings on the barrel would suggest they failed. Also the moth stuff inside. Removed the aperture thingies only to find one of the biggest screws in there was badly damaged by somebody with background in changing wheels, not servicing fine instruments. Jackass, Philips power drivers should never ever be used on JIS screws. Aperture spring being glued in place and not swapped out for a new one is a minor nitpick in comparison. Didn't want to take it apart completely - helicoids and all - so I tried to unscrew the rear element with a properly softened large area of contact tool (just dumb oversized pliers with rubber pads) and it worked. So I removed the empty pupal case (no sight of moth itself) and all the debris. Here's a picture for those of you who got this far: http://foto.ri-ki.lv/details.php?image_id=104 Properly cleaning the lens would require total disassembly and even then I don't know if it would be any good. Those monsters weave their cocoons and strands of that weave are between elements even further inside the lens. Even if I could open it up that far I don't know if I could completely remove everything. So that's it probably for this lens. I will test it against my other sample but there is no real reason for me to use it anyway when I have the other one. I don't see a good way to clean it so well that there is no sign of the moth ever being there so it can't be sold either. I might go through the adventure of disassembling it completely, cleaning it and putting it all together but I don't see that happening before the kids grow up :) Pentax should probably know about the sad state of service in Europe but I don't see a way to get this information to anybody who cares. If service at Pentax authorized service centers takes half a year and is performed by idiots who only make things worse, somebody should care, no? Thanks all for commenting. No hair clippers needed, just another friendly reminder to leave fingerpaint in front of the more permanent stuff every time. She did help cleaning up but as any parent of a 2-3year old will know, that is something that makes cleanup a couple times harder and more time-consuming but should be there as a learning experience. As to whether to have coffee before or after - having coffee after the cleanup minimizes the affected area a great deal, in fact, if you don't want to clean paint off of beds, curtains, cats, carpets, walls, door handles, floor, cupboards, toys, computers, windows, siblings and yourself (the list obviously can go on and on), you should really get to it as soon as possible :) kris > > Yes, what Frank said. FA135 service story and advice needed
Some of you might remember my FA135 that a moth took hostage. Long story short there is a dead moth right behind the back element. If nothing else, it is messing with focusing, so I would very much like to get rid of its carcas and debris. So half a year ago I went to my local Pentax dealer and the lens was sent off to be "fixed". After long travels to the Czech Republic and Germany it finally came back today. Nobody has even tried to take it apart. They say they can't fix it. So my question is - do I try to take it apart or give it to some local repairman to attempt a repair? I haven't seen any schematics floating around and have no idea what it would take to remove the back element but I have about as much trust in a nondescript repair shop in a basement somewhere as I do in my own fingers. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
FS Friday: Sigma AF 180mm F3.5 APO EX MACRO
The old non-DG non-HSM version of the lens. I always had good results with it on my *istD and K10D but I haven't used it in some 6 years. There's no reason for me to hang on to it. That said, there is also no reason for me to sell it other than to fuel my own LBA. Today I saw an ongoing auction for one just like that on the evil auction site and was pleasantly surprised with the current bid. So if you want it, are not turned off by its European origin (customs and all) and are ready to offer something in the ballpark of the current bid on the one that's on the eekbay, let me know. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
RE: M lens mount
> For an experiment I need the mount from something like the M50/2. > Anyone got a trashed Pentax brand lens cheap? > > Collin Brendemuehl When I needed something like that, the cheapest and ultimately best option was to get one of the Chinese reverse adapters off of the ebay (search "pentax reverse adapter"). They are cheap and shipping on them is cheap too. What sold it for me was that I had my pick in the width of the flange and didn't have to deal with the pain of butchering a lens. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I have no idea how that compares to the A but it is a solid metal and glass antithesis to the megapixel and sharpness cult most people belong to. I put it on my K-5 every now and then to admire the view, to appreciate the shallow DOF, maybe even (god forbid) to make a blurry picture or two. It would be my one and only lens if only I could persuade my family that pictures consisting of 99.9% blur and 0.1% of what seems somewhat less blurry are all the rage. I love its character and the way it makes me feel. I would be hard-pressed to produce a handful decent pictures that I've taken with this lens and if pictures - the end result - were more important to me than the actual picture taking process - the journey - I would probably never use it again. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Sucking has always seemed to me like the most worthwhile cleaning activity because it has the greatest potential of actually removing dirt that has not yet glued itself to the sensor. Haha, paypal gives them my address and that works fine for most cases unless a phone number is also required. The main problem here is that nobody knows who TNT Post gives their packages to at our end, our national post and EMS can't recognize their tracking number and TNT here doesn't deal with "normal" mail. So even though I might have tracking information for the package I don't even know who to harass about delivering it or how they could identify the package even if they had it. At first I had decided not to sweat it and just make the seller resend it at their expense but the more I think about it the less confident I am that this package will ever surface at either end ...and resending it seems like yet another gamble. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

homemade tilt/shift lens (more or less)
Looked at lensbaby prices, checked the market for K-mount tilt/shift lenses and cooked up my own for a fraction of the cost. I am fully aware that I could get more movements with a bigger MF lens and 50mm might seem an odd choice but here it is: The Kreativ-NIKKOR 50mm/1.4 CVA TS http://foto.ri-ki.lv/categories.php?cat_id=6 CVA stands for continuously variable aperture not only because it is stepless but also because it is way too easy to accidentally change it at the moment :) I can get infinity focus with small movements (both tilt and shift), adequate movements at portrait distances and very nice closeup capability. Basically I wanted something lightweight of portraity length with decent low-light and wide-open performance that could be adapted without much hassle. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

morning HOYA fix
Some years ago I bought a coffee pot by eva solo (http://www.evasolo.com/productinfo/567590/), its life was short in a house with kids and a cat but the metal/rubber parts survived the fall so I have been using those with a bottle of plum wine wrapped in a towel ever since. Those break too but are easy (and pleasant) to replace. Usually I have been washing off all the labels but haven't done it this time. RE: Damned customs - F 85 Soft
> I've never managed to get anything by them... have you? Every once in a while. TNT and DHL always cause serious problems, EMS that isn't routed through any of those usually passes through as if nobody cares. The main problem I have with them (TNT/DHL) is that it takes so much time, additional costs and babysitting to get your package through them that the higher shipping costs they want for their "service" are ridiculous. This one is being processed by TNT, if I were to try and pick it up from customs myself I would spend around 6h on a workday+driving all over the city. They are supposed to deliver to my door but on items that they have given to the customs they do that only if I pay extra. kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Damned customs - F 85 Soft
One of my new acquisitions - the F 85 soft - is held hostage in customs now. Damn those heartless bastards. I know it's their job but still.. will end up costing me way more than I ever wanted to pay for it. RE: a fat enablement
She actually remarked that her sister 12-24 was even fatter and heavier and got genuinely upset at the "can of tomatoes" remark, asked if I had ever seen a tin can with such a beautiful bulbous glass top. I had to reassure her that K-5 would never mount a tin can unless she had some extremely nice features - and that I had never seen one that would even come close. kris P.S. Yes I have too much work to do and am looking for distractions.. PDML is letting me down today (this far). Procrastination ftw. > This one K-5, the lucky guy, has fifteen wives. > -Original Message- > All extremely well done, Bruce! C&C; #31 appears slightly red and I'm > trying to decide how well #33 works for me. > Wonderful lighting! > > Jack :) Now that you say it, #31 IS slightly red, I think it works for me but will see if a little adjustment is in order. #33 is more of a documentation piece - it was a portrait session so I don't think there are going to be any more of those full body shots from other shooters. Available light is something I am more comfortable with so ISOs of 1600 and more are my natural habitat. K-5 really shines here - better noise and more megapixels means I can retain more details. Alas this portrait session has led me to feed my LBA - F85 Soft and K50/1.2 are in the mail... My wallet weeps but the LBA monster can sleep. Bird pictures are tough, judging from your results, bird pictures with flash are even tougher. Thank you for adding to the list of things I am not going to touch with a long stick anytime in the near future. If anything those flash shots make the "You gonna finish that?" look absolutely awesome in comparison (not that it wasn't already cute and funny and very enjoyable when I first looked at it). GESO: young females now with 3200ISO grain (K5)
At one point in that portrait shootout I got tired of stealing people's light with the flash trigger I had smuggled in (and making them wait for the flashes to recycle) and bumped ISO up from 80 to 3200 to make do with the pilot lights only. Now ISO3200 in studio is something I never thought I even wanted to do but the effect is quite pleasing (even if I say so myself). GESO: young females - request for comments
On Wednesday I had an opportunity to attend a studio portrait shootout that was a part of some photo classes - basically a bunch of students going trigger-happy. As I was just substituting for some fun I shot JPEGs and frankly was surprised to see how much I could really play with them - something I thought impossible without RAW. Anyway, just a few random pictures - would appreciate some critical comments both general and framing/postprocessing. Thanks. A couple were shot with an IR-modified K10D and the others with the K-5. http://foto.ri-ki.lv/categories.php?cat_id=5 kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
