I might be able to make it this year.  Which missions are you talking
about, and where might they be?

This is the first I heard about this.  Just curious as to who decided on
the missions and the date, and when that happened.  Perhaps I missed a
bunch of messages.

Bruce and I tend to talk off list about it first. He's the "organizer" and I 
try to help come up with ideas, etc. I guess you could say we both provide 
some impetus for getting together at all. With Bruce organizing, it seems to go 
well. That's been the previous time and this, anyway. If people want to do it 
differently in the future we can discuss that at the next meet, of course.

But IMHO, this sort of thing always works better if one person takes charge. 
Doesn't have to be the same person every time, naturally. But I ain't 
volunteering and Bruce is willing to.

Love to have you come.  You didn't miss any messages.  Since Mark
Dalal moved, I have somehow become the organizer of the event.  So the
date was picked based on my ability to go.  I don't have any other
openings until about June.  As to shooting missions, Marnie and I have
been kicking around different ideas for a while and she brought this
one up.  Seemed like a great idea and a departure from a more
outdoors/nature venue.  I still have to look them up and see what
looks best around the area - I believe there are several to choose
from.  I'll try to check into the missions today and post my findings.

That's a probable "Yes" from me.

If potential attendees would like to indicate some Pentax gear they
don't own, but would like to play with, it would be a good idea to
let other attendees know.  I know I'd like to spend a little more
time with a DA 16-45, and it might be fun to try the 14mm as well.
Plus, of course, an FA* 85/1.4; so far I've never handled one.

I can bring along some of my older film bodies (MX, Super Program,
PZ-1p), as well as the *ist-D and/or MZ-S I'd be using myself.

outdoor component.  You can experience some of the interior ornateness within
the chapel buildings or explore the gardens (in various stages of bloom) out
back. So, it could be both an indoor and outdoor experience.

Input from a lurker who follows on the Mail Archive (which hasn't been working
well all week and so I may be missing messages). I have been to both Mission
Delores in San Francisco and the mission in Carmel and had productive
photographic days. I would enjoy meeting other PDML folk. Please count me in.

I have been there once several years ago.  Didn't get to do much
photography - had the family in tow as we were visiting to help our
daughter with her report.

What I liked about it was that there is a big square out front and it
is still an active mission - church services are held.  From my
understanding, it has the biggest chapel out of all the missions.  It
also has an inner courtyard with gardens and such.  It seems like
there would be some good opportunities there.

This is the mission that I am leaning towards.

Anybody have other thoughts?

Probably too far for me to drive, because I seem to have developed sciatica 
or something. Don't really want to drive for over two hours. It takes me 1 hour 
15 minutes about to get to the top of San Jose. So I have a sneaking 
suspicion it would take over two hours for me to drive to San Juan Bautista. 
Even two 
hours would be pushing it for me.

Actually, the only mission I remember is San Juan Bautista. I've never seen 
the San Jose Mission, so can't speak for it, or Mission Delores, or any of the 
others, as matter of fact.

Or maybe someone can give me a lift to whatever the consensus is. Over two

I nominate Mission San Jose. It looks interesting. It's close to John Francis 
and would be about 1 1/2 hours at the max for me, and probably about the same 
for Pat. And only a tad longer for Shel. 

And although it's been fully restored, it looks nicely old and crumbly. It 
has a good rose window and a neat door and arches and everything one would want 
in a mission. I am not sure about when it is open yet; haven't looked it up

Although, to be perfectly honest, I have yet to figure out, since 
restoration, what is at the Mission San Jose and what is not. They often show

find a web site that shows Mission San Jose. Maybe it hasn't been restored.

John, can you help out here? I was under the impression something had been 
restored at San Jose. You said the Mercury News had an article on missions. Has 
it?

It works for me. 

But we do need to find out if it *has* been restored and when it is open. The 
link I posted earlier was for one in Texas (stupid mistake). However, the web 
page for California missions says it has been restored. There must be a phone 
number somewhere where we could call and get information. Or have them send a 
pamphlet or something.

It's in Fremont.  That's not "Fremont-the-district-of-San-Jose",
it's "Fremont-the-town-just-a-little-north-of-San-Jose" on the
East side of the SF Bay (about 10 miles N of 101, on 680).

Evidently they do weddings in the chapel, so found some interior shots too.

I also suggest the Egyptian Museum (Rosicrucian museum) as a backup, 
before/after lunch. Haven't researched where it is in relation to mission and 
when it 
is open, but it looks interesting.

I believe that Mission Santa Clara is now part of the Santa Clara University
campus. It may be closer to San Francisco than Fremont (no bridges to cross),
but I could be wrong. Where abouts are the NorCal people situated? Sounds like
Bruce is in the Sacramento area and John somewhere in the South Bay?

Looks like I decided to buy an *ist Ds (and join the list) just in 
time. I'm down in the Santa Cruz area and can vouch for the appeal of 
San Juan Bautista. However, driving to any of the other suggested 
options would be no problem.

I haven't been to the Egyptian Museum in years, but my memory is that 
it would also be an intriguing locale. Keep in mind that no flash or 
tripods are allowed inside, so bring those fast primes.

The San Jose Mission doesn't look that great from what I can see in
the photographs I've found on the web.  I'll see if I can find out
anything about the Santa Clara Mission.

The grounds outside the Rosicrucian museum are a wonderful photo site;
I've been there a couple of times, and I'm sure that it looks splendid
now that spring is here.

Fairly close at hand is the San Jose history park (mildly interesting)
and the Japanese Friendship Garden - another wonderful photo location.


Quite honestly I'd suggest that those two or three locations are far
more likely to yield good photo opportunities than either mission.

The Egyptian Museum is about 30-40 minutes from Mission Blvd in
Fremont (assuming traffic isn't totally crunched up). It's in a
nice surburban area just outside San Jose central distract, on
Naglee near The Alameda. 

I don't know about doing photography there ... It's a museum,
after all, and they likely require permits and such ... but the
neighborhood and along The Alameda nearby is one of my favorite
areas in San Jose to do street photography. There are quite a
number of small shops, restaurants, cafes and also industrial
stuff in the area. It's a 20 minute walk from The Alameda and
Race Street to the heart of San Jose downtown too ... Downtown
by Market and San Carlos, Santa Clara is another great area for
street photography.

I'm all for this outing.  As far as missions go, I know the Sonoma mission 
pretty well, since my family visited there a handful of times when I was 
younger.  Might be a good location, but then again I wouldn't mind seeing 
something new.  Anything would be good with me, as long as it's not too much 
more than two hours away.

The reason?  My car gets *horrible* gas mileage.  (;
Anyway, I'm not 100% in yet.  I work saturdays, but I'm going to see about 
swapping that day with someone else.  Should be fun!

Godfrey DiGiorgi (Cupertino)

The first meeting we had was at Muir Woods and Muir Beach.  The second
one was at Pt. Reyes.  This will be the third meeting.  The general
format has been to meet mid-late morning, shoot for a while.  Have
lunch somewhere and then shoot some more.  Head home in the evening -
some of us have had a dinner together before heading home.

The current discussion is revolving around shooting at one of the
California missions.  The one we know most about (San Juan Bautista)
is the furthest away and so may not be a good choice.  Those that are
closer nobody knows whether they would be in good enough condition to
warrant doing a shoot there.

If there are other suggestions that would be more central and would be
conducive to a group like that, please bring them up.

We also like to bring equipment that each has to give everyone an
opportunity to look/try things that they might have interest in, not
to mention having a great time talking and sharing.

It would be great if even a few more people in the area would speak up
and join us.

Hmm, well, ok. Scratch two off of my very short list. It looks like Marin
County has been visited.

1. Alcatraz Island (for the prison and Bay views, weather depending) plus SF
water front?
2. Newly remodeled SF Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. In spring
time, they have a glorius flower layout in front of the conservatory.

Well, to combine two previous posts, there *is* Mission Dolores in *San
Francisco*. Counts as a building, Marnie? =). 

There's also North Beach and Chinatown(for the street photographers) or Golden
Gate Park (for nature photographers).

It certainly does. And San Francisco would be sort of central (except for 
Bruce). But not that far. Sonoma Mission might work too.

What I am going to is pop Mom in the car and drive down to Mission San Jose 
on Thursday and take some shots of the layout (nothing fancy) and report back. 
Post some pictures (better than we can see on the Net which really don't tell 
us much).

I have also suggested:  Borges Ranch (Contra Costa -- old farm buildings -- I 
have not visited there yet), wild flowers on Mt. Diablo (not sure how many 
there are in early March), Ruth Bancroft Gardens (world famous -- have to 
reserve -- desert plants -- Contra Costa), etc. 

I like your suggestions too, Pat.

And, yes, I was suggesting photographing OUTSIDE at the Egyptian Museum. 
Which should also offer some people shots.

Why don't we keep discussing, but hold final decision until I can report back 
on Mission San Jose. I do think the mission idea captured people's 
attention/interest.

And now Mom is looking forward to the outing.

The last two trips have been North of the Golden Gate;
why don't we try for something a little further South this time?

Not really a plausible NorCal PDML meet, but apparently the high
rainfall means there will be some spectacular desert blooms in
Death Valley this year.   I'm seriously considering taking two
or three days off and heading out there.   Anyone else interested?

Hmm, I'm not sure about the "public park" business. Far as I'm
aware, the grounds are all owned by the museum. 

Regardless, though, I saw someone mentioned Alcatraz. That I'd
love to do!

I've been lurking too long--put me on the list, too.  I'm in Sacramento 
(East Sac, to be exact).  Regarding location, I propose that we go somewhere 
interesting (of course), but also slightly exotic.  SF itself is 
interesting, but it is so over-photographed that I don't consider it exotic. 

I would love to go to San Juan Bautista

Well, I've never had any problem there.  They encourage folks to
just wander around the grounds, even if not visiting the museum.

Perhaps if we all wandered as a group, there *might* be an issue.
But four or five individuals?  That seems unlikely to me.

I'm not sure I'd want to visit Alcatraz this early in the year.

likely still to be too iffy to be that near the water. Or too cold.

lol ... I love taking pictures in fog and just after rain. Cold
doesn't bother me too much, as long as I'm prepared for it. But
then again, I am the person who would prefer to live on an
island in the Irish Sea. ;-)

Regards the Egyptian, it's probably an "ok" place to shoot as
long as you don't make a pest of yourself. I don't know what
they'd think about tripods, though, and people setting up for
precise work. 

Whatever ... There are so many places in the greater SF Bay Area
to go make photographs. How about coastal places, like Pigeon
Point, Davenport, etc? Or wandering further afield ... I would
love another expedition to Point Lobos. Or I could spend (will
spend...) weeks in SF downtown, North Beach, The Castro, the
Presidio, etc. 

As of the end of this month, my present contract work is over
and I'm back to full time photography again. I also have a nice
little Land Rover which can seat five in a pinch, with plenty of
space to carry photo gear in the back. So there are always
options, even for those who might not want to do so much driving
themselves... ;-)

Boy are you whetting my appetite Bruce. Me and a friend used to visit
that museum regularly when I was a lad. School trips and extra-
curricular: he was a big fan and would come away with scarabs ad
infinitum. This was thirty years ago. I'm envious :-)
