Re: Old 97s review
From a cursory listen, this Fight sSongs is less rowdy, less twangy than the last one. It's more popish and accessible(?), industry slang for "looking for a hit." I kind like it but I also like the new Wilco. Iceman Dave Purcell wrote: For the weasels with advance copies is the new record any better than the last (which was terrible)? Re: Best So Far - 99
Nice idea and I would truly like to but just went out to my car here in good old northern Utah and theres another two inches of white shit on it. It's new and it didn't come from seagulls, and more of its still flying. I guess I'll just have hang out with the cd player for another week cause it ain't supposed to snow tonight but a new colder nortern storm front should arrive late tomorrow. Oh well, the Mandy Barnett is hot enough and I'm still having trouble getting the Chris Webster to vacate a spot in carousel. No top 10 yet cause I haven't had a chance to listen to everything that will be released before Jan. 2000. Iceman ps The Tom Waits si great and the new Robert Cray (all three cuts I've had a chance listen too seems headed that way, too. Oh yeah top tens when only a month ago I was seeing us debate a thread on 1999, the year the music died. What happened? Rusty Wier
Just outta curiosity. Back awhile (like the 70's-early 80's) I snagged a few pieces of vinyl from Austin based singer/songwriter Rusty Wier and loved them. Was listening to one the other day and wondering what ever became of Mr. Wier and what might he be doing now. I haven't seen anything by him in years. Iceman
Re: Chrissie Hynde in Salon
Not Chrissie even though I truly wish that she would get with it record another album. Tired of searching compilations and soundtracks for her voice. Now for twang content, been grooving on a new release by the Sone Coyotes titled Church of the Falling Rain and the lead vocalist reminds me of Ms. Hynde. Good stuff so give it a listen if you get a chance. Iceman

Yup, Otis is still hanging around as one of the resident dead heads and itinerant programmers. See him a couple of time ayear or so. He's also involved playing music with to different bands at this time. I like the Scott Kirby release a lot but I've got humg up on the Flying Boat one. Will probably switch to a different cut next monday for my regular show Iceman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Doug, Thank you so much for playing Scott Kirby's "Last Flying Boat". I'll go for the KISS for sure agreeing also to Twisted Sister, Motley Crue and a host of metal neometal stuff but early Diamond was just plain fun, entertaining rock roll. Re: Tom Russell's new one
That's the problem with concept albums. While they may work as a whole (and I'm not sure this one does), it is extremely rare if individual songs hold up on their own. To have to read liner notes and written material before I can understand how good a record is or what a great concept I'm dealing with is firthers my point. This is aural art, not literary genius. The music is, or should be, the important thing. If it's not, then just write a book and I'll trat it for what it is. I feel the same way about visual art as well. If it doesn't grab me before I read about the concept and what went into producing it, it's probably not "great" art. Tom Russell has done some great pieces before and I respect him for even attempting this song cycle but (IMHO), it just doesn't work all that well. Hell, name me 5 concept albums that have worked out well regardless of genre. Iceman Hanspeter Eggenberger wrote: Reply to: Re: Tom Russell's new one Slim wrote: I think it's a great album. I would suggest listening a couple of times and reading the extensive notes Russell includes. Projects like this are labors of love, and I bet everyone on the list would agree that a talent like Russell deserves more than a cursory spinthrough. I agree with the above. But I have the same problem with Tom Russell's new one as I have with most "concept albums": Some songs only work in context to the others but not as individual song. So you have to listen to the whole album from the first to the last track to get the picture. HP NP: Hank Shizzoe - "Walk"
Re: Tom Russell's new one
I just listened to this too. And was sorely disappointed after all the hype here. As a folk operetta goes it's ok but nothing stands outs. Sorta like Paul Simon's Capeman thing. A thanks but no thanks here and I'm a big fan of Tom's. Iceman Don Yates wrote: Didn't someone refer to this as the best album ever, or some such hyperbole? After one listen, I'd give it an award for one of the more sleep-inducing albums I've heard in quite awhile, but that's about it. A coupla songs stand out from the monotonous morass ("Chickasaw County Jail" and Iris singing "Acres of Corn"), but most of it's too damn stately and antiseptic for its own good. I bet even Kinnamon balks at this.--don

Yes Reznor produced the sound track for Lost Highway, but if he likes country it doesn't show up on it. Re: Be Like Mike (no, the other Mike)
Jesus, I find myself agreeing with Don. I realize that Mike has not been the most lovable of characters and probably has some major personality defects but he could definitely put out enjoyable well crafted pop/rock soul at least until the HIStory fiasco. Yes, he sold lots but sometimes that happens to good stuff. I would rank him as one of the three most influentail black artists of the last 20 years. The others would be Stevie Wonder who just plain never ceases to amaze me. The third one would be his royal pain in the ass over- egoed TAFKAP (the artist formerly known as Prince). And for the most part I don't like his stuff but he too has done some brilliant stuff even if I try not to like him or it. And Sign of the Times ends up being in my top 100 albums of rock as does Thriller. Iceman Don Yates wrote: On Wed, 10 Feb 1999, lance davis wrote: But, now that you've brought it up, I am thinking about it, and my hackles are raised. OK, fine, let's put Mike in the club. In fact, let's put him in the Top Ten. No, no: Top Three. After all, his influence alone, would, indeed justify it. Well, that *was* what the list was about, right?g The mass-market-shackled, lowest-common-denominating drivel that Jackson has ridden into Swiss Bank Accounts and the Beatles back catalog is so influential that modern RB still suffers by and for it. If disco put the pop in funk, Mike put the pop into disco--like that needed to happen--and almost single-handedly ruined black music. I like Mike just fine -- particularly from "I Want You Back" through Thriller, which is a mighty long stretch of time. The bubblegum soul of the J5 always puts a smile on my face, and jesus, that kid could sing. Furthermore, I'll stand on David Cantwell's coffeetable and say that Off The Wall and Thriller are two of the finest pop albums of the past 20 years.--don

This is now or soon out on Rykodisc but if my memory serves me right this is not an American Alt country band but a slightly more rootsy version onf the Cranberries hailing from somewhere inside Great Britain. Though Iha joined the band in Chapel Hill at a surprise show at Local 506 and in London at the Borderline (where Whiskeytown cranked out a Buzzcocks-esqe rendition of Iha's "Be Strong Now," from his solo album, Let It Come Down), God help us all if he (Iha) is a major influence on this new release after that dismal thing he did solo a year or so ago. Send him back to the Pumpkins where Corgan can keep him in line.

Re: other voices - Linda Ronstadt
It's on Ronstadt's Sweet Dreams album. I'm not sure which one of Warren's its on but it really is a ZEVON cut. Give him what credit he is due is my motto. I've played the Ronstadt Version a couple of time with an intro something to the likes of and here Linda Ronstadt coverin Warren Zevon's Poor Pitiful Me. I'm probably real stupid but just how does this "develop" artists? This obviously hsa absolutely nothing to do with music or art or humanity for that matter. It simply has to do with greed and maximizing profits. And as for diversity in music available for purchase and airplay, sounds like an "oh well" to me. As for MCA not cutting artists at this time, it was my understanding that they had already, at least in part done that, with the like of Joe Ely taking the first big bites. My own guess on this is that anyone not in the predominant format genres will be looking for new new homes. That would include most alt or insurgent country acts, folk, and AAA artists. This is going to interesting to watch as an outsider but I would hate like hell to be on the inside of this at this juncture. My best wishes go to all the employees and artists receiving pink slips. And maybe, over the long run Seagram's will end up shooting themselves slightly above the foot Iceman

Can you honestly say that "these tunes we listen to now" aren't more interesting and just plain better than that fluff? Why shouldn't more people hear them, then? Remember there's always the delete key. g Jim, smilin' Looking over my play lists and what I also play at home, there is very little if anything 10 to 15 years old that came out of the "Trashville School of Music" that I still listen to. However, I stll regularly play off of the Uncle Tupelo releases, Blood Oranges, Rank File, Lone Justice, Robert Earl Keen, Rusty Wier, etc. The so called outlaw and alt-country stuff is still worth listening to. It doesn't date and it's not schlock. I would imagine some of this will still be wonderful long after Garth Brooks and his ilk have been forgotten. Iceman

Dancing in part at least at its best involves flirting and enjoying your partners presence. It's a game and a wonderful suggestive game at that whether its slow dancing or flat out rock n soul. And that's impossible with line dancing. I've also said that it looks like the Richard Simmons show but the music is better on Richard's show. As an aside, I don't do the the Macarena either. I have a 1975 Enz album called Mental Notes with Philip Judd before he left the band pre-True Colours. It is very different than their later stuff. Lots of odd New Zealand folky-country stuff. Judd plays a mean mandolin on a few tracks. Also, Neil Finn's Escapade album is great too. I romanced a French girl in Montpelier with that tape. Ooohh the memories
