I though there were a couple of pretty good tunes in the Cheap Trick/Cars pop/rock vein. Two tidbits of info gained this weekend. The next Trish Murphy record is now due in July. Jesse Dayton has signed to Columbia and is also expecting to release a record in July. OBTwang: The upcoming Marty Stuart record could be the country record of the year. It's an ambitous project that melds all kinds of country into a very listenable whole and features guest appearances from Emmylou, Ralph Stanley, Johnny Cash and George Jones. Jim, kinda smilin'

Earnestness is one thing, finding something fresh to say is another. It's gotta be really something special at this point to make me want to write about it and/or listen to it a million times. The Damnations and Pete Krebs are the two that currently tend to fall into that category. I'm kinda with our LA rock critic on this one. Most alt-country albums are undistinguished, cliche-ridden mediocrities (the new albums from the Damnations and Krebs being two very big exceptions). I suppose you could say the same about any other genre you care to name, but the volume of twang-rock poo seems to be increasing to a dangerously high level. Anyway, I'm also interested in hearing what's got the Austin twang-rock queen so hot at the moment.--don

Bob Seger at his (early) best is gritty and real, I once heard him singing a version of St Dominic's Preview that I'll never forget. I like "Strut". ALMO closed its Nashville office. Gillian is and always was handled out of the LA office. -- From: "Shane S. Rhyne" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: "passenger side" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Almo Sounds (Was: Clip: Layoffs Hit Country Music Industry) Date: Thu, Feb 25, 1999, 4:45 PM Howdy, This paragraph from an article clipped here (and which was for some odd reason yesterday's front page above-the-fold article in the Knoxville News-Sentinel) caught my attention: As the money rolled in, companies like Warner Bros. and MCA built expensive office buildings, gave employees raises and hired more people. Now those companies want to cut costs and small labels like Rising Tide, Magnatone, Almo Sounds, Imprint and Decca have closed their doors in the past couple of years. Did I miss something? When did Almo Sounds close up? Isn't that Gillian Welch's label? Weren't they recently also mentioned on P2 as organizers of some sort of tribute album? Just curious. Re: Poor Paul Westerberg
Arm in arm with Neal... (Tommy Stinson in Guns Roses). . . but this frightens me. Is this true? I keep getting this response from people upon hearing this news, and it baffles me. I think its great and I can't wait to hear what they come up with. GnR came from Sunset Strip Hairville, but it was their punk influences opened the door for Nirvana. Its not like Tommy has been Mr. Profound and Prolific on his own, indeed even when he is good no one seems to care, so I think he's a great fit for the band. I miss seeing him play bass. Poor Paul Westerberg. He spent his time in the Mats cracking jokes, and everyone took him seriously. Now, he spends his time taking himself seriously, and everyone thinks he's a joke. Not everyone. I think from now on the first time you hear a new Westerberg record the initial reaction will be the same: "Oh, God, PAUL!" Then once you accept the fact that its not and will never be what it was again, you can listen and enjoy the fact that he's still writing good - and some great - songs.

Re: Be Like Mike (no, the other Mike)
No one had ever come even close to selling 36 MILLION records before Mickael Jackson, and he was the first truly GLOBAL superstar. Nowdays we see cases of worldwide celebrity more often, but before Michael Jackson no one had been a huge star in japan and europe and the us and everywhere else ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Considering the supremely weird childhood the guy had, its not much wonder he ended up hanging out with chimps and emmanuel lewis and putting llamas in his backyard. Off The Wall is his Guernica. I realize that Mike has not been the most lovable of characters and probably has some major personality defects but he could definitely put out enjoyable well crafted pop/rock soul at least until the HIStory fiasco. Yes, he sold lots but sometimes that happens to good stuff. I would rank him as one of the three most influentail black artists of the last 20 years. The others would be Stevie Wonder who just plain never ceases to amaze me. The third one would be his royal pain in the ass over- egoed TAFKAP (the artist formerly known as Prince). And for the most part I don't like his stuff but he too has done some brilliant stuff even if I try not to like him or it. And Sign of the Times ends up being in my top 100 albums of rock as does Thriller. In fact, let's put him in the Top Ten. No, no: Top Three. After all, his influence alone, would, indeed justify it. Well, that *was* what the list was about, right?g The mass-market-shackled, lowest-common-denominating drivel that Jackson has ridden into Swiss Bank Accounts and the Beatles back catalog is so influential that modern RB still suffers by and for it. If disco put the pop in funk, Mike put the pop into disco--like that needed to happen--and almost single-handedly ruined black music. I like Mike just fine -- particularly from "I Want You Back" through Thriller, which is a mighty long stretch of time. The bubblegum soul of the J5 always puts a smile on my face, and jesus, that kid could sing. Furthermore, I'll stand on David Cantwell's coffeetable and say that Off The Wall and Thriller are two of the finest pop albums of the past 20 years.--don

Got some good work on the movie done, etc. In particular, I got The Damnations Tx (the TX will drop some day when the 'limitation', or something, runs out on the name Damnation) playing in front of 3000-4000 people. Then, I got them the next night playing in front of a handfull in San Antonio. Lot's of Gourds, Damnations, Prescott Curlywulf, and otherwise magic last week. I regret missing the Bone at the Hole, but seeing The Gourds finally get "Ghosts of Hallelujah" more than half right was probably worth it. Next up is a review of GHOSTS for you guys.
