Poppy-mod and fun-melodic. They backed up Radney Foster at SXSW to fine
effect. I have their CD if you wanna borrow it...

Any of the Nashville folks have an opinion on a band called Joe, Marc's
Brother?
I'm pretty sure that it's been mentioned here, but what's the general
opinion on the new Fountains of Wayne CD? I though there were a couple of
pretty good tunes in the Cheap Trick/Cars pop/rock vein.
Two tidbits of info gained this weekend. The next Trish Murphy record is
now due in July. Jesse Dayton has signed to Columbia and is also expecting
to release a record in July.
OBTwang: The upcoming Marty Stuart record could be the country record of
the year. It's an ambitous project that melds all kinds of country into a
very listenable whole and features guest appearances from Emmylou, Ralph
Stanley, Johnny Cash and George Jones.

matter of chops or a lack thereof) *would* turn them off to roots
music for good.

more recently, they've morphed into "Bob Log III", where bob does a one
man show-playing slide guitar and kick drum with some drum loops here and
there. still sounds like doo rag. the motorcycle helment with the built
in telephone receiver/microphone has go to be seen to be believed.

I had a soft-in-the-head spot for Doo Rag, I confess, but I recently saw Bob Log
III and after two songs realized that this was going to go on and on in an
undifferentiated oozy sloppy-blues mess and that I'd gotten all the novelty
value from it I could. Luckily in the same venue a bhangra/drum'n'bass group was
rocking the house downstairs so I went and shimmied among 21 year old beautiful
Indian girls and boys and felt much better.

very lo-fi indie washboard drums indie rock/blues what have you, a la

Does anyone on the list know anything about about a cd called "Chuncked and

packaging has a 1994 copyright.
Someone I work with just handed it to me, and said "You're always listening
to that yee haw stuff, you might like this."
She was right. It sounds a little like Beck playing the blues. Very lo fi
production. It's curiously hypnotic. I can't stop listening to it.

The great jazz singer Joe Williams was found dead Monday night a few blocks

Yeah, not much twang here, but the man was a great performer. He was one of
my mother's favorite singers. His work with Count Basie during the 50s was
fantastic to say the least. For Mothers Day last year, I took my mom to see
JW and George Shearing at a special show here in Detroit. Front row seats, it
was one of the best shows that I have ever seen. He belted out his standards
like they were his lifeblood. His voice will be greatly missed in the jazz

I'll give you the folk point though - you won't hear that on Country Radio

higher learning, their airwaves are rife with it. Most is as cliched as the
worst country stuff. I guess that's academia for you.

I'm simply fascinated by the idea of being repelled by a more eclectic radio
mix. I'll certainly give you your point about the smug-superiority factor
of AAA, but that tag absolutely does not apply to WNKU, one of the best
Non-Comm AAA stations in the country. Beyond having fun playing "Guess the
Next Line of this Song" (my average hovers around .750) listening to
commerical country radio is at worst...lame. It is a format in desperate
need to some self-examination.

I'm not sure what needs explaining. Most AAA radio's a sterile mix of
"classic rock" (i.e., overplayed boomer music) and tepid adult pop. Even
worse, most AAA folks seem to smugly assume that their tame format is
somehow aesthetically superior to all the other over-consulted, ultratimid

I guess this isn't so much about who's a good alt.country band as who I like these days, but here goes: the Pinetops from Winston Salem - I think that Jeffery Dean Foster (who is NOT JD Foster. he's a youngin') is a vivid, intuitive songwriter and the band that he assembled for his record Above Ground and Vertical is the tops - they're doing what might be called Uncle Tupelo but really they reind me of about 5 of my favorite bands all at once ...I think Beaver Nelson is the male Lucinda Williams - don't fuck up and miss him if you're gonna be in Austin...I love the Yay-hoos and think using Chip Robinson as the frontman is brilliant even if they're calling it the Backsliders...I like the emo-roots of Lou Ford...The new Hazeldine record (as yet without a home due to Unigram hell) is brilliant! Its the ulitmate Chick's Roadtrip Record...Pete Krebs from PORTLAND is the real deal (another great band performing great songs) Sweet Ona Rose coming from Cavity Search Records soon...Little Sue from PORTLAND has the vocal talents of Iris Dement, the spirit of Loretta Lynn and the relevance of Edith Frost or Freakwater...Fernando from PORTLAND is gonna shock you all with his new album (nothing you'd expect if you've heard his other stuff) rootsy psychedelic roots rock - you heard me right...isolated scenes come up with the most interesting stuff - big city clusterfucks don't seem to matter as much to their participants...or something...xoxo

Earnestness is one thing, finding something fresh to say is another.
It's gotta be really something special at this point to make me want

I'm kinda with our LA rock critic on this one. Most alt-country albums
are undistinguished, cliche-ridden mediocrities (the new albums from the
Damnations and Krebs being two very big exceptions). I suppose you could

Howdy,

This paragraph from an article clipped here (and which was for some odd
reason yesterday's front page above-the-fold article in the Knoxville
News-Sentinel) caught my attention:

As the money rolled in, companies like Warner Bros. and MCA built
expensive office buildings, gave employees raises and hired more people. Now
those companies want to cut costs and small labels like Rising Tide,
Magnatone, Almo Sounds, Imprint and Decca have closed their doors in the
past couple of years.

Did I miss something? When did Almo Sounds close up? Isn't that Gillian
Welch's label? Weren't they recently also mentioned on P2 as organizers of
some sort of tribute album?

Just curious.

I keep getting this response from people upon hearing this news, and it
baffles me. I think its great and I can't wait to hear what they come up
with. GnR came from Sunset Strip Hairville, but it was their punk
influences opened the door for Nirvana. Its not like Tommy has been Mr.
Profound and Prolific on his own, indeed even when he is good no one seems
to care, so I think he's a great fit for the band. I miss seeing him play
bass.

Poor Paul Westerberg. He spent his time in the Mats cracking jokes, and
everyone took him seriously. Now, he spends his time taking himself
seriously, and everyone thinks he's a joke.

Not everyone. I think from now on the first time you hear a new Westerberg
record the initial reaction will be the same: "Oh, God, PAUL!" Then once
you accept the fact that its not and will never be what it was again, you
can listen and enjoy the fact that he's still writing good - and some great
- songs.

Jesus, I find myself agreeing with Don. I realize that Mike has not been the
most lovable of characters and probably has some major personality defects but
he could definitely put out enjoyable well crafted pop/rock soul at least
until the HIStory fiasco. Yes, he sold lots but sometimes that happens to
good stuff. I would rank him as one of the three most influentail black
artists of the last 20 years. The others would be Stevie Wonder who just
plain never ceases to amaze me. The third one would be his royal pain in the
ass over- egoed TAFKAP (the artist formerly known as Prince). And for the
most part I don't like his stuff but he too has done some brilliant stuff even
if I try not to like him or it. And Sign of the Times ends up being in my top
100 albums of rock as does Thriller.

Well, that *was* what the list was about, right?g

The mass-market-shackled, lowest-common-denominating drivel that Jackson
has ridden into Swiss Bank Accounts and the Beatles back catalog is so
influential that modern RB still suffers by and for it. If disco put
the pop in funk, Mike put the pop into disco--like that needed to

I like Mike just fine -- particularly from "I Want You Back" through
Thriller, which is a mighty long stretch of time. The bubblegum soul of
the J5 always puts a smile on my face, and jesus, that kid could sing.
Furthermore, I'll stand on David Cantwell's coffeetable and say that Off

Got some good work on the movie done, etc.

In particular, I got The Damnations Tx (the TX will drop some day when
the 'limitation', or something, runs out on the name Damnation) playing
in front of 3000-4000 people.
Then, I got them the next night playing in front of a handfull in San
Antonio.

Lot's of Gourds, Damnations, Prescott Curlywulf, and otherwise magic
last week.
I regret missing the Bone at the Hole, but seeing The Gourds finally get
"Ghosts of Hallelujah" more than half right was probably worth it.
Next up is a review of GHOSTS for you guys.
