I only use Netscape as a "backup" browser.

The 1400 probably does not have enough RAM or CPU for Netscape 6.

NS 4.75, 4.78, 4,79 are probably about it.

I use NS 6 at home on my old PCI MACs and IE 5 on my 1400 until I have time to
sort out NS 4.79 on it.

Sounds like your version of Netscape is out of date.

Well, if your home PC has a cd burner, simply download the Mac version of a
browser - like Internet Explorer 5 off Microsoft.com - and burn it on a cd. OS
7.5.5 should not have any problem reading a pc cd-rom, I don't think.

Come to think of it, though, I am not sure what version of IE can work with
OS 7.5.5. I use IE 5.1.7 on my 5300, but it requires OS 8.1. I know the rest of
the list can help you with a modern browser for your OS, though.

Aha; did not know you were using the USB connection on your modem. I think
they are either/or. And yes, you may have to reconfigure it to use it via
Ethernet cable. Of course, a cheap router would allow you to use both
simultaniously.

Sounds like too old a version of IE to handle Java. You might want to
take a look at iCab--it's Mac-specific, and should run well on your

I know the card is good, I know the computer is doing its job. I think
Netscape is my problem now. I will wait until I can get the software for

To the lister who wrote saying I should be able to get on the net at home

I just thought of something; earlier I think you mentioned that, either in
MacTCP or TCP/IP, you had the choice of "ethernet" or "alternate ethernet."

Do you have an ethernet port in the rear of your 1400? If you do, it would be
the last port on the left inside the rear port cover door.

More bad news: The above setup of TCP/IP should work with DSL, Cable Modem...
any network setup. In fact, if you re-open the TCP/IP panel, the address
should be populated with numbers. If they start with "169" that means you do
not
have a connection with the network, however.

After checking that you have a good connection via the ethernet cable from
the DSL modem to your laptop (or if there is a router/switch in between), I
would try another ethernet cable.

>I'm going to try it at work
>tomorrow on that network. That's where I really want it to work anyway.
>Any comments or suggestions about what to try?

a few:
1) what version of Netscape are you using? Maybe it's too old to properly use
over an ethernet connection (doubt it), or maybe it has not been configured
correctly to use via DHCP? Maybe it is setup to use via a PPP dialup connection?

2) To get another internet app on your laptop, you could find a AOL cd-rom
floating around somewhere.

You say it shows up as a "PC card" on the desktop. Is it showing as a
generic "PC card" or does it have the name of the communications card
showing? If it's a generic, then the problem may be that the OS really
isn't fully recognizing what's there.

Okay, good news and bad news. I went into the hard drive, Apple Extras
folder, and found "Network Software Selector". There was TCP/IP. I selected
it. I had to restart the computer. Then I opened the control panel, TCP/IP.
There were several choices, so I'll start at the top. First was "Connect
via:", I selected alternate ethernet.
Second was "Configure:", I selected using DHCP server.
Third, it asks for IP address, Subnet mask, router address, and Name server
address. But all of these have beside them.
Now the bad news. Netscape still says it can't make a connection. However,
I'm not disgusted yet because I'm trying to route this through my DSL modem
at home and it probably won't work here. I'm going to try it at work
tomorrow on that network. That's where I really want it to work anyway.
Any comments or suggestions about what to try? I really appreciate everyone
pitching in to help the newbie. I will try to be as helpful to all of you in
the future. This is the newest mac that I have, but I have an SE/30, several
Powerbook 170's, and even an Apple IIe that I have actually managed fairly
well with in the past.
Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions, I'll let you know how it goes
tomorrow.

Okay, can I get a MacTCP/IP control panel somewhere? Bear in mind, I can't
get the mac online so a download is out of the question.
thanks,

Re: Powerbook 1400 problem

2006-01-29 Thread brandymilner
Okay, I pulled up the MacTCP control panel. I have 3 choices at the top of
the screen: EtherTalk (A), Ethernet built-in, and PPP. I have selected
EtherTalk (A).
At the bottom of this screen is an IP Address, currently showing 8.0.0.0,
and then a "more" button below that. I'm not sure what the IP address should
be set at, the network guru said that wasn't important for our network.
Anyway, when I click on the "more" button, I get one screen with four
sections. The first section is "Obtain Address" and 3 choices: Manually,
Server, Dynamically. I have Dynamically selected. Below that is Node Range:
From: and To:. I have From 1, To 126.
The second box is Gateway Address:, currently set at 0.0.0.0.
The third box is the busiest. I have Class:, currently A. I have Address:,
currently 8.0.0.0. I have subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0. Then I have Net:, set at
8, Subnet: set at ), and Node: set at 0. There is also a slider currently
set with 8 bits Net, 0 bits subnet, and 24bits Node.
The fourth box is "Domain Name Server Information", showing different
addresses. The previous owner has Hiwaay.net, with IP address 208.
147.144.2. I have changed to a blank Domain with a blank address, which is
probably not going to work at all, but something to try.
I don't see anything about DHCP, so I'm assuming I don't have that option.
thanks again for all the help, I really appreciate it.
Roy

Yeah, I believe you; I just warmed up my 540c that runs OS 7.5.3, and it has
a TCP/IP panel. I think perhaps the MacTCP mentioned by the lister is another
app used for something else, like "FreePPP" or something.

To the 1400 lister; do you have a TCP/IP Control panel?

I don't think I've seen this mentioned. MacTCP is infamous for it's
problems with BootP. IIRC it doesn't use DHCP.

MacTCP is the predecessor of TCP/IP in what IIRC is known as Classic
Networking.

Go into the TCP/IP control panel and select "Ethernet" or "Alternate Ethernet"
depending on which one shows up. Then, you should see a drop-down menu with
"Configure" beside it, in the "Setup" pane. Select "Using DCHP Server" from

Hope this helps,

Okay, something new to add to the mix. The PC card is on the desktop. When I
double click that, I get 5 options, one of which is PC card. This opens a
box that has several settings. The correction and compression settings shows
6 radio buttons: off, MNP4, V.42, MNP5, V.42bis, and MNP10EC. I have off
selected. Anyone recommend something else?

It also has 2 choices below that: Maximum Throughput and Ring on Incoming
call. I have maximum throughput selected.

And then another choice to make. When serial port opens, Init settings or
show status. I have show status selected.

This also shows the software version as 2.5.7, which I think is the highest
that will run on 7.5.3, but I could be wrong.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Powerbook 1400 problem

2006-01-29 Thread brandymilner
Okay, you are probably right. But, I have to select PPP or ethernet, so I
would think that would take PPP out of the mix. I could be wrong, as I say
I'm new at this. I didn't see anything about DHCP, but that doesn't mean
it's not there. Where would I look for this?

When I first started with this, I didn't have the thing set for ethernet
because I didn't know where to look. Then, I would get the message to check
"configPPP" and make sure it's set right. But that file can't be opened. I
don't know if it's a software issue or if the computer just won't let me get
to it. But since I have the network control panel set to ethernet, I don't
get this message anymore.

I thought I was pretty good at this mac stuff, especially this older
equipment, but I've about decided I'm in over my head. So as I said before,
any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Roy

It can be a settings issue, too. Just because it's an ethernet connection
doesn't mean a thing. There's PPPoE, DCHP, BootP and a couple of other
standards for communication over ethernet, so your "Network Guru" is way out
of his league here.

Hope this can be of some use,
Caleb

Yes, I have it set to automatically set the address. I didn't see DHCP, but
that doesn't mean it's not there. I'm new at networking a mac on a PC
network like this. It shouldn't make any difference since it's ethernet, but
then I don't really know much about ethernet either. The "Network guru" said
it shouldn't make any difference because ethernet is ethernet and it doesn't
care what kind of computer I use.

I don't think it would be an OS issue because the card is recognized by the
computer. The computer thinks I have a PC card and it will let me change
everything to ethernet settings. It could be Netscape, but I don't have a
way to get any other browser to try. I live a pretty good distance from any
major hub cities, so I'm probably the only person in my county with a mac. I
know I'm the only person in this area trying to get on a network with a mac.

And how would Ido that? I don't have access to a dialup network here. I
don't have any adapters to hook between the card and the network. I have DSL
at home and I don't think the mac will even see that.

I do appreciate the help and thank you very much for trying. I will try
anything anybody suggests, within reason.
Thanks,
Roy

In MacTCP, how do you have it setup? DHCP? Ability to have the address set
automaticly?

Could it be an OS issue? You mentioning MacTCP reminded me that there were
differences with older OS's; the earliest OS I have ever wifi'd is 7.6.1. Could
it be that perhaps some PC card extensions are needed?

Before concluding that the card is bad, I would try to use the modem part of
it. I once had a card that was not working, that turned out to be just a bad
dongle.

Yes, I have the factory disks for the modem and installed them. I have
MacTCP set for ethernet alternative. The card also has a network setting and
I have that set for ethernet as well.

I bought the powerbook and the card off ebay, and I've about decided I have
a bad card. The "network guru" here doesn't know anything about mac's, so
he's not much help. At least he did try to help, it's just a foreign

Thanks for trying,

Powerbook 1400 problem

2006-01-29 Thread brandymilner
Hi,
I'm new to this list, so please bear with me if this has been addressed
before.
I'm using a Powerbook 1400cs, running OS 7.5.3. I'm trying to connect to an
ethernet network with a Global Village PowerPort Platinum Pro PC card. The
computer recognizes the card. When I open Netscape, I get a message that
Netscape could not establish a connection because of lack of resources. I
have plenty of memory, so that's not the problem. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Roy

Yes, you can with version 6 of the Orinoco driver, but you will have a
much

better PowerBook if you can upgrade to at least OS 8.6 and then use the
v7.2 drivers.

If you are short or ram, then i can understand your desire not to upgrade.

How much ram do you have? What are the specs for your PB1400.

Hi John.

In my expierence, the lack of a good Main battery will not affect your
problems.

A new PRAM battery will cost you about $16.00 plus shipping.

By the way, even with two new PRAM batteries in my 1400/166, I cannot
change the main battery while in sleep mode. The Apple manual says I should
be able to, but the computer will not fully wake up from sleep.

I figure that while both were new, one was fresher than the other. I did
buy one off ebay, and one from an Apple Service Dealer, ( nice dealer, most
wont sell you a part). My 1400/166 now keeps the settings for TCP/IP and
AppleTalk between shutdowns, and between main battery changes. I did put in
a Sonnet G3 accelerator, but that made no difference in the original
problem.

Some of the desktops also act weird when the PRAM battery is low. A person
I met at last night user group meeting has a Blue & White G3, that she is
afraid to shut down. It takes forever to start back up. She has been
putting it in sleep mode for 5 months.

I advised her to get a PRAM (1/2AA Lithium) battery also. These are
available at her local Radio Shack, but way overpriced at $15.00. However
when you only need one, then it does not make sense to ship it in.

You can get new fresh PB PRAM batteries from here at a good price:

http://www.powerbookguy.com/1400.html

I hope this helps.

John, the problem sounds exactly like a low PRAM battery. You said
that
your put in a new PRAM battery, was this battery new or used?

I have purchased a used but good PRAM battery and it did not help.
I finally put in two new PRAM batteries (the 1400/166 uses two).
This solved my problems.
I also had a Wallstreet acting weird, and when I replaced the PRAM
battery,
all the weird went away.

Thanks for the reply. The pram battery is used and I was afraid of
that. Would the lack of a good main battery have an effect on the
power manager reset?

John
John and Ken, this is just to confirm that I had the exact same problem
on my 1400 a few years ago and it was indeed the PRAM battery. Once I
got a new PRAM battery (one that really was new) the problems ceased (I
was in the university service shop and the guy there said, "Oh, I can
get you one of those" and he did and put it in - no problems
thereafter). I'm not sure how the main battery interacts with the
system, and don't want to confuse the issue inadvertently so will leave
it for others to respond.

Best,
Rick

Try pushing the reset button on the back for 60 seconds.
And the screen needing a brightness adjustment after a long sleep seems common.

Yeah, I just gave up on my 1400c 133 mHz. Beautifully built
machine...but too slow for me to do wireless Internet. I bought a Dell
TruMobile card for it but luckily didn't invest anything else in it.

I think I might have my kids play CD-ROMs on it...I replaced with an
Averatec ultraportable (yes, a PC, I'm a Mac deserter, LOL) and they
love it because it's a "laptop."

9.1 works just fine. I use it on my 1400 with a Sonnet G3/333.

Myself, I'm looking at a 466, since I use this laptop a lot, and I don't
really feel like getting another.

Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400

2004-11-17 Thread Jake Zeppa
I have a 1400c which now sits because it was replaced
with the Ti G4. The 1400c is a nice laptop but these
days it's a bit slow. When the 1400c was my primary
computer I used it until the speed (133mhz) started
slowing me down. So I went and bought a Sonnet 400mhz
G3 upgrade (back when it was fresh on the market) at
the cost of about $400+tax. The 1400c upgrade made a
world of a difference, almost making it feel like a
new machine. These are some of the tests I did.

CPU:
Stock Powerbook 1400c/133 - 150
Sonnet 1400c 400/G3 - 995

CPU:
Stock Powerbook 1400c/133 - 250
Sonnet 1400c 400/G3 - 938

As you can see, it was many times faster than stock.
And because of the chip Sonnet uses, I gained battery
life. All in all it was a good buy. That was until
problems started popping up. Even though the upgrade
was great, all in all I would never buy from Sonnet
again (personally I hate them)! For some reason I
wasn't able to use any OS after 8.5 (that means no
8.6+). And even 8.5 was unstable, it would crash on
occasion. Using 8.6 or higher would only allow me to
use the computer for a few minutes before it locked
up. When I called the company they pretty much told me
to shove it and that it was an Apple software problem
and not there's.

Ok, so here are the important things (I used that
1400c for a few years). First is the speed, I know the
stock processor is dog slow and it's pretty much
useless these days. Sure it would make a good computer
to write on but photo/video/internet can be a bare. If
you upgrade it with a G3 you can do video and photo
now (though it can be buggy) and the internet now is
livable but you are still limited to using old
software and older OS's. The main reason is the 64meg
ram limit (which was the main reason I stopped using
it). You can't do anything with 64meg ram and using VM
makes the problem worse because of an extreme
reduction in performance. The video is very poor. Your
stuck with 800x600 in thousands of colors (a real
burden) and the frame rate with anything is SLOW!

If you ask me, use it for simple stuff or as Geoffrey
said, give it to some kid. Otherwise I'd save the
money to buy something a bit snappier. Something like
a Lombard or Pismo at the minimum. These days there
fairly cheap and a bargain compared to upgrading the
1400c with a new processor, maxing the ram, larger
hard drive (1-2gb fills very fast) and a ethernet
(broadband) and/or 56k (dial up) PC card(s) to connect
to the internet. Also I'd like to note that the 1400c
has some serious issues with PCMCIA cards and them
working. It's much better to get a computer that has
them built in already. But again that's just me.

   Jake

Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400

2004-11-17 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
All depends on what your trying to get out of the book, I have the 400
upgrade and it made a huge difference, just don't get in a hurry to buy
the upgrade. I have seen them for $35 to $50 on Low End Swap. Ebay
well just do not get in a bidding war.

I does make a huge difference. These books are still good for email,
writing and light web use. I love the keyboard, solid and sturdy sums
it the whole design.

The max ram however is 64 megs, that's the real short fall. You have to
stack the ram unless you lucky to find 48 meg single, made by Newer
Tech.

If you do not want to upgrade give it to school or a kid who can use
it, dig up a printer. You would be surprised at how many kids do not
have a computer and even the 1400 once the most powerful computer,
faster then a desktop has use today.
That's what makes Mac a Mac, my wife used Turbo Tax last year to check
our accountants figures and found gold, do that on a wintel this old on
NEW software. Of course time marches on and she will need to use one of
my pismos or Apple blow me away with a cheap iBook. If the machine fits
your needs then do it, I run 8.6 is very stable. Pare the system down
Good Luck

Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400

2004-11-10 Thread Richard Adams
I can't speak to how worthwhile it is, but I saw one of the processor
upgrades on E-Bay a while back for about $70. There was one on there last
night for about $150.

I certainly agree that I wouldn't pay $300 for the upgrade when you can
still get a complete 1400 for about $50-$100 - just seems disproportionate.
Too bad you can't either put more RAM in a 1400, or drop in the processor
upgrade on a 3400, 'cuz I have both, and they both are kinda dead-ended in
terms of upgrade potential.

But I got the 1400 for $10, and the 3400 for free, so I can't complain!
Ciao!

You can impress no one with a faster 1400. ( unless it is real cheap to buy
the accellerator) better to put the money toward a Pismo or iBook. And get
more features too.

I have a 1400 as you know but I can't see a $ 300.00 investment in it.

Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400

2004-11-08 Thread KG
If you go for the really fast upgrades, you'll get the higher floating-point
performance, but the CPU will be badly hobbled by the slow bus speed. You
will only get the full benefit of the 333 or 466 MHz when you're using
something that hits the FPU hard, or an app that has a data set that can
fully run inside the level 2 cache. Otherwise, the 466 MHz upgrade will run
about like a Wallstreet at 300 MHz or so.

A 233 is probably your best bet if you're just looking for G3 performance at
a low price. And there are plenty of 216 and 233 MHz G3 upgrades for the
1400 on the used market.

Re: Another PowerBook 1400 question

2004-11-07 Thread Andrew Kershaw
 > Hello,

 Thanks,

15 mgs, as I recall.
That might be how much RAM your install of OS 9 uses _after_
installation and with VM turned on, but it's not the system
requirement.

OS 9 won't install on anything less than 32MB of REAL RAM with VM set
to 40MB. It enjoys more RAM than that. 48MB is probably a bare
minimum (if you don't want to run any apps).

Unless you've got at least 48MB of RAM and an overriding need to run
OS 9, I wouldn't waste the CPU cycles (and slow-as-molasses memory
pages to disk) with that OS on anything less than a 3400c. 8.6 will
do must of what you need in 9.x (especially since it can run
CarbonLib 1.6) without quite as much pain.

FYI, Mac OS 9 system requirements straight from the horse's mouth:

Peace,
Drew

That's pretty much been my experience. I've played
around with PB 1400 upgrades over the years, and to be
honest, I never saw much difference in the performance
of the 333 MHz and 466 MHz upgrades. A 233 MHz is good
enough in my book.

Speaking of Boston can anyone recommend a good Mac service shop in
the Boston Metro area? One that won't be confused by a OS 8.6?
Hi Andrew,
I don't know if it's still there or not (or if they still do Mac
business), but about 6 or 7 years ago there was a Mac-only place
called Computer Town near Kenmore Square in Cambridge (or in the
square, I can't remember). They were a good Mac place back then. I
was very fond of another of their branches in Salem, NH.

Anyway, it was just beyond the MIT campus, IIRC. I'd start my hunt
there. You might be out of luck, though, as I think I remember
hearing something about Computer Town going PC...

Of course, there's also the Apple store in the Cambridgeside
Galleria, but judging from what I've heard about them, you're likely
to get as good tech support from them on legacy hardware as you would
get at CompUSA.

Peace,
Drew

As I wrote just a moment ago, I have a Vimage 233MHz upgrade in my Powerbook
1400. I inherited the 'book from my sister-in-law who had a professional
shop do the upgrade - she's completely technophobic; so I know nothing about
the upgrade. A Sherlock search on my machine shows the extension "Vpower PB
G3 EX", and the "VpowerInfo" application I mentioned earlier. I cannot find
anything with the name "vBOOSTER".

The machine runs great; I love the speed of it. Hope this helps.

Re: Powerbook 1400 shows G3 33 Mhz in system profiler?

2004-09-13 Thread William Damkoehler
I have a Vimage 233MHz processor installed in my Powerbook 1400. The Apple
System Profiler will often read it accurately, but many times it will report
it as 33MHz. Vimage supplied a reader which always accurately reports CPU
type, CPU clock, BUS clock, Backside cache size, and Backside cache clock.
This application (VpowerInfo v1.1.0 - by Vimage Corp.) also reads my iMac DV
400MHz machine, so it seems to be non-CPU specific.

Vimage Vpower drivers? (was Powerbook 1400 shows G3 33 Mhz in system profiler)

2004-09-12 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Well it appears that there are no extensions or control panels for the
G3 processor.
I had a look at the CPU and it was marked "IBM PPC750-EBOL233" so it
looks like there is a G3 inside.
Two other chips on the CPU card are labeled:

"Vpower PB 1400 G3 233 Vimage Corp."
and
"Vpower PB 1400 G3 M-46209"
So it looks like I need the drivers for the upgrade.
A little poking around on the web turned up this site:

which has Vpower drivers with the following caution:
"I haven't a clue as to if these are the drivers one would need with the
Vimage Vpower PB upgrade cards. I don't have a Vimage chip and have no
way to test them. However, I did get them from a site that claimed that
they'll work with "any of the G3 chips" - whatever good that's worth. If
someone could verify this and email me at the address on the contact
page, I'd really appreciate it."

The drivers are in an archive:
" Contents of Vpower_Drivers.sit
Vpower Control (control panel)
vBOOSTER 64-54ver110 (extension)
vBOOSTER 6454ver121 (extension)
Vpower PF G3 Extension 1.1.0 (extension)
VpowerInfo (looks like an application)"
Does anyone else have one of these Vpower upgrades?
Do these look like the correct drivers?
Thanks

Hello all
I just got a 1400 powerbook with a G3 upgrade (so it's only 1/2 removed
from being off topic).

System profiler shows:
"Processor info: PowerPC G3"
"Machine Speed :33 MHz"
I'm guessing that the bus speed is 33 MHz since I don't recall there
being a 33 MHz G3.
Does this sound plausible?
Are there any other things I should look out for on this model?

Andrew in Ann Arbor
What kind of G3? I had a couple of Sonnet cards, 333 and 466, and ASP
only reported them at 67 mhz. According to Sonnet, only their software
sees the card speed properly. At least that's what they told me when I
had a bad one.

Probably the drivers for the upgrade card is missing from the system

2004-09-10 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Hello all
I just got a 1400 powerbook with a G3 upgrade (so it's only 1/2 removed

It's going to my Dad who has 2 1400s which have both developed a problem

This machine should give him a G3 that will use all his old peripherals.
It came with OS 8.5 and has now been updated to 8.6.

Wireless on a Powerbook 1400

2004-08-18 Thread Kenneth Vann
The people who started Mac Wireless were the same people who supplied
Farallon with the Skyline wireless card.

Proxim Skyline Wireless PC Card, Part # 473a, (16 - Bit PCMCIA) is out of
production, but available new in box from the following vendor:

http://www.emicrox.com/eShop/product.aspx?advanced=1&cid=10011&attr=Wireless+Net
working&pid=875478

Had about 88 in stock last time I checked.

It will not suport OSX without shareware/freeware drivers, but will support
OS 7.5.5 through 9.x.

I use it on my Powerbook 1400.

2004-08-18 Thread Dan K
Andrew McCall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wanted to know about SCSI PC
card adapters for a PB1400.

I'm not clear on why one would need or want such a thing for a 1400, the
obvious answer is to use the built-in SCSI port.

Eh?

Also, 1400 CD expansion bay modules are widely available even in the UK .
. . again going for the obvious, how about eBay? 6x and 8x modules sell
for (USD) $15 to $50, 12x for $20 to $60, keep a continuous watch for a
bit and ye will be rewarded with a bargain. A dead 12x (_cheap_!) is
almost always the best deal, as a replacement Teac 24x CD-224e drive
mechanism (eBay, usually new) can be found for under $20.

You'll find some details here:

Anyway, it will have to be non-cardbus for certain, so you're looking
for an older card. AND, to top it off, the 1400 can only support the
"old" SCSI manager, which also limits you. The only shipping Adaptec

I have one such (older) card that I use in all my ancient Win98 laptops
(P100 era) but it doesn't get recognized by the 1400. I never looked
for other models/manufacturers as a result.

A quick google shows only one guy with a FAQ saying PC SCSI cards could
work on the 1400, but no model #s listed. Personally, given my
experience, if they don't list a known working model #, I don't believe
it yet :)

Adaptec's page for the 1460D say it works with just about everything on
the planet except Macintosh.

I have tried eBay.co.uk and some suppliers of old Mac's in the UK, but

My daughters have MP3 players that use SM and MMC. Both those can be

2004-06-08 Thread Fluxstringer
Hello,
I have a powerbook 1400 that I left on the shelf too long and its
gone into a coma. I've tried pressing the reset button for up to 5
minutes with every
combination of battery in, battery out, power supply connected and
disconnected; nothing seems to work. It just sits there with the
green light on, mocking me.
I'm pretty sure the pram battery has some juice left - but I'm
willing to try replacing it if it has to be done.
Is there any hope for this machine?
Specs: Newertech G3 250, 64Mb ram, Global Village ethernet/modem
pcmcia, pcmcia compact flash adapter with 128Mb flash card (virtual
memory).
•• •
PRAM fully zapped ?
Do 1400s have a CUDA switch ? Maybe that needs reset too .

Bill,
I have the same machine only I don't have the compact flash card :)
I ran across this link when searching for stuff about my 1400.
It sounds like you have the 1400 green light coma. Here's a link that
talks
about it and gives instructions on how to fix it.

I hope that helps :)

Re: Powerbook 1400 & mp3 player.

2004-06-08 Thread bmcewen

There are many that use smartmedia or CF.

I got a little "Classic" brand model MP6410 on clearance for cheap; put a big SM card
in it.

It's Ok, has some issues, but was cheap, small, and the card is loadable on my 1400
with a PCMCIA adapter for the SM.

HTH.

Powerbook 1400 & mp3 player.

Is there a mp3 player that uses a compact flash card, and would allow me to
use it with my PB 1400?

I am hoping that I can prehaps use the compact flash card with a PCMCIA
adaptor and just copy over the music files.

Any suggestions

Okay, here is a new entry into the Stupidest Question Competition:

Y'all know those squarish-little 8mb RAM modules that plug into the RAM slot

accommodate the stackable RAM modules...

...can they plug into the "expansion" slots, either alone or on top of a

A couple of weeks ago an item circulated re changing cells in PowerBook

Both the 1400 and 3400 use standard IDE notebook drives. I can't see why it
wouldn't work, unless 7.6.x needed an enabler to run on the 3400c. Really,
though, in my opinion the best thing you can do for a 3400 is to give it a
newer hard drive. I've tried a 3400 with the stock drive, and compared to
mine with a newer 12GB drive (bought on this list), it's a huge difference.

> ALSO... the 3400c I have is the 180mhz; are the 200 and 240mhz THTA much
> faster..?

MacBench4 says no. It says the 180 MHz scores at 293, the 200 MHz at 308 and
the 240 MHz at 337. But that's a very old benchmark, and I know a friend of
mine with a 3400/180 won't even run iTunes 2.0.4 because of unacceptable
performance, but my 3400/240 has no problem at all. To me, that says
something different.

You can, however, hack a 3400/180 to run at well over 200 MHz without a
hitch, or so I am told. The only thing I don't like about the 3400 is that
the CPU isn't on a daughtercard. I would love to be able to drop a fast G3
or G4 in there.

We have a 240 and a 200. I use a lot of Filemaker (Server), simple
photoshop stuff, dreamweaver, and various web browsers. I like the
240, it is a great machine, but the 200 is really a bit too slow, I
get frustrated with it.

So - yes there is a big difference. The 240 really does feel 25%
faster than the 200.

To put it plain: I want to test out a HD-less 3400c I recently obtained, but

Is it possible to simply put the 1400's HD in the 3400c, or are there OS

In stores, I've only seen CF and Smartmedia PC Card adapters, unless

A fun factoid, my understanding is that on CF cards, the IDE controller
is embedded into the CF card itself, and the readers are just wires.
Which is why the PCCard adapters are so cheap for CF. Smartmedia and
SD/MMC etc the IDE controller is in the PC Card adapter so it's more $.
