I could read PC floppies with an Apple-supplied utility in OS 6. PC
Exchange was introduced with the advent of OS 7.0.

As the PowerBook 145 shipped with OS 7.0.1 (and we still don't know
which OS the OP's (David's) 145b actually runs, it could be as far up
as 7.6.1), this may be somewhat OT, but I remember using the Dayna DOS
Mounter CP/CDEV way back then, probably in OS 6, too. It was a utility
that originally came with the DaynaFile which was a SCSI-connected
external drive for PC disks IIRC, manufactured in various 3.5 and
5.25 and combined configurations allowing the Mac to read DOS disks
instead of spitting them out automatically (remember MacPuke?), but
could be purchased separately for 89.95 US$. Some basic information can
be found at http://users.eastlink.ca/~pspencer/mac/dayna/dayna.html;
file exchange between Macs PCs is treated in many places, one I found
is http://www.upenn.edu/computing/printout/archive/v08/5/exchange.html.
I should be able to dig out my early version of the DOS Mounter if need
be, and Dayna Communications have been out of business for more than
ten years now AFAIK, so please... Note that there was a better (so they
say) software called AccessPC and that DOS Mounter was developed
further, so get informed and make your choice:

Insert a Floppy Disk into the 145 and format it by clicking and
holding on the special menu and going to erase Disk when the floppy is
selected. If there is a DOS 1.4MB option choose it and format, if not
you need some software, please then email Me off-list.

I use MacLink Plus 8.0 on my 190 w/ OS 7.5.2, but I'm not sure if it'll
work for your 145/7.1 setup, but it surely wouldn't hurt to try. Also,
I've found that even when using Mac files, if it's a DOS floppy you're
transferring from, it'll give some problems, or it does on my 190, at
least.

Hope this helps,

Make sure PC Exchange is on the mac, under the Apple menu in the
Control Panels; then the mac can read ordinary PC formatted floppies.
My memories of 7.1 are very hazy, it may have been called that
sometime later.

Most stuff you've downloaded will have either a .sit extension
or .hqx extension.

.sit is for Stuffit compressed files, the Mac analogue of Zip file in
the PC world. .hqx are BinHex'ed files, not really similar to
anything in the PC world, but are binary files converted to plain
text streams so they can easily be transmitted via e-mail, ftp or
other means. They preserve the Mac file structure while passing
through non-mac filesystems.

Stuffit Expander is the program that will decode both of those. With
luck it's on the Mac now, or you have a real chickenegg problem.

MS Office documents should transfer back and forth easily, though the
version of microsoft on that 145 is likely to be quite old.

I've managed to get the 'book, after 6 hours of work, to now boot off of
the CF startup unit, but I can't get it to work properly from the hard
drive. Doing a clean install from 8.1 fails, as does upgrading, or even
just dragging the system folder from the CF to the HD and going from
there. Someone emailed me that I may have to wipe the drive and start
over--I may have to do that, but I'm waiting on a large external SCSI

This may be something totally unrelated but when I upgrade a desktop machine

problem hanging at startup, that is solved by removing the Iomega driver

Many thanks to all who are helping.

All the machines at present have 56K internal or external modems and we can
cable together all except the powerbooks - so a wide
choice. We can upgrade the IMac to OSX - no problem here as we now have all
the Mac, O,S.s from 7 to X available, (pity we cannot
convince the Crescendo Upgraded 7600 its a proper full G3 as we could then
put 9.1 onto it as well) and will try to get the Wireless adapter Bruce
mentions - hope they ship to the UK! as
things like this are gold dust over here, as is the potential
Farallon/Proxim PCI adaptor card for the 7600, so if anyone sees one we are
in the market - PLEASE .

Re: Help needed with proposed airport network

2004-12-01 Thread Kenneth Vann

This is one way to do it, but prehaps not the correct way.

As you want to use the 7600 as you router, you will need a software router
(IP Net Router) to make that work. You might have to add another Ethernet
card to the 7600 unless you are using a modem to connect to the Internet.

A better way to go is with a stand alone hardware router, like the Snow
Base Station, or other, which will let you share your internet with both
the wireless and wired machines. As the 7600 and iMac are not portable
machines, this should not be a problem.

This is should work with either dial up or DSL/Cable.

The cost of the IP Net Router and a used Snow Base Station is about the same.

If it is not practicable to run wires between the 7600/iMac and the Base
Station, then a Ethernet wireless adaptor should work. There are some links
on my FAQ to a Dlink product that will work under OS 9.

You might be able to find one of the PCI adaptor cards for the WaveLan PC
Card you already have. If so, this could be used to put the 7600 on
wireless. Farallon/Proxim also had a Skyline PCI Card which used the
Skyline PC card to put a PCI slot Mac on wireless. If you found a
Farallon/Proxim PCI adaptor, then you could use the Skyline PC card you
already have, and convert the PB5300c to use one of the extra WaveLan Gold
cards.

Please let me know what your final solution is.

 a Power PC upgraded  540C /OS 8.6 with an enterasys card;
a PowerMac 7600 / OS 9 upgraded to G3 using a Sonic Crescendo but no radio

proposed system ( mainly Wavelan Gold and Wavelan Bronze mainly).

Does anyone have any ideas on a good or the the best way to put this puzzle
together so that possibly we could use a landline from the 7600 to the
Airport and then wireless the 5300 and the 540? or, better still, is there a
way of connecting the iMac somehow into the loop bearing in mind it only has
USB outlets and we cannot see a means of equiping it with a card as it is a
tray loading and not slot loading version?

Sorry some of this is strictly speaking off-topic but its all to get the
powerbooks functional n the end.

Crap.. Then TigerDirect is selling a D-link DWL-122 USB wireless
adapter for $20, but it has OSX support only. The cheaper solution is
to use a wired connection, the more expensive route is something like
D-links DWL-810+ wireless ethernet bridge.

AFAIK all iMacs can accept an airport card.
If not, it and the 7600 can use a ethernet to wireless bridge such as:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?
action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3product_uid=62800_LOC=US which
will work with anything that sports an ethernet port.

With the airport you can connect the ethernet port to a small ethernet
switch ($10-$50, I found several under $20 via froogle. Trendnet is a
decent cheap brand) and the iMac and 7600 to that via wired
connections. If your physical layout works with that, this is the
simplest solution:

Powerbooks - - - -Airportswitch---7600, iMac.
Problems arise if you've got a graphite airport and are connecting it's
ethernet to a broadband internet connection.

In that case you need to get a broadband router instead of a switch,
but they can be gotten with several wired ports as well, enough to
connect the wireless and wired systems to the internet.

  internet
  |
PB- - - - -Airport--router--7600, iMac
If you've got a snow airport, it's easier, because it has two ethernet
connectons, one for the broadband WAN connection and one you can use
for the wired segment of your LAN.

Scott,

If you haven't gotten an answer yet, you aren't likely to get one by
asking a second time.

Service Manuals are embargoed by Apple and discussing them on this
list is strictly verboten. Asking people to send you a copy off-list
is just splitting hairs (and asking members to trust you, too).

Go Google for them. If you can't find them with Google, then
repairing your 520 is not your only problem.

Explorer for Mac doesn't like. I've been using Mozilla at home (on a PB3400/OS9.1)
for a few weeks now and really like it. Takes longer to startup than Explorer but
after that it's very nice. Really like the tabbed windows.

 Hello,

Please help me I cannot access the following webpage : www.irs.gov/
I am using a powerbook 3400c running internet explorer 5.1 and OS 8.6.
For some reason I cannot load the home page of the internal revenue service
on my browser. On my Win 95 machine the page loads so I guess it isnt my
older browser version that's the problem.
 Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
By the way my iMac running OS 9.2.2 has the same problem.

Interesting ...

Doesn't work on IE 5.1.7 on my Rev A iMac (MacOS 9.1).

It works fine on the same machine with iCab 2.9.6 (regardless of how
it identifies itself).

Ugh! That's right. The Javascript on that version of IE was really
funky. I forgot.

That brings up a long-repressed memory. A few years back, the state
intituted a totally new benefits system that every employee had to use
to re-specify their choices (or not have health care, etc.) It
*required* IE.

On the Mac you would get *two* error messages, with the associated
'bing!' for *every* field that you filled out in this roughly 20-screen
form, with 5-30 fields on each screen.

bing!bing!grumble grumblebing!bing!bing!bing!
bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!5%#$@**!
bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!$@@***#bing!bing!
bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!bing!
Finally I got to about page 18 and it simply refused to go any further.

I've never come so close to smashing a computer with a sledge hammer.

I sent the state webmaster got a *blistering* critique via e-mail.

He replied, more or less thanking me for being nice and not including
the various obscene descriptions of his ancestry and probable love
interests in my message like some of the other e-mail he was getting,
and, yes, they know there's a problem and they won't use that
subcontractor *ever* again, and unfortunately, the only solution was to
use a Windows system this time.

Gotta tell you...we mac folk don't take it quietly ;-)

Oddly enough, I've never has a lick of trouble with any of the other
online service sites for the state, like the DMV.

So yeah, it's javascript.

Use Mozilla, a *vastly* superior web browser.

Want something that really seems to be a crime against nature? There's a
program called ActiveGS--an Apple IIGS emulation program that only runs on
IE. It works well, but it does seem strange to have an Apple II program
tied to a microsoft product. :) You can take a look at

(BTW, iCab 2.9.7 works quite well on my PPC'd 520c. :) )

Re: Help! sluggish 3400c both online and offline

2003-08-25 Thread KG
 I just acquired a PB 3400c which has 16MB of built-in RAM - totaling 64MB
with help of virtual memory coming from my 4.0 GB internal hard drive.

should I get more memory and max-out to 144 MB? Or should I download and
use more mainstream browsers like Netscape or IE. If so what version
should I get? I am running OS 8.6

Definitely get more memory. Running 8.6 on a 3400 on 16 megs of real RAM is
a waste, the poor thing must be slower than a 5300. It is eminently capable
of surfing the Internet with a full complement of RAM.

As for the browser, Cyberdog works, but it's pretty outdated now, and rather
slow on top of that. You really want to make your browsing fast, there's
only one answer--iCab. It's the only browser I'll use under the classic
MacOS. I have Nutscrape on my 3400, but only because I couldn't get a
certain plug-in to install without a so-called mainstream browser
installed. I've never used it.

How did you even manage to install 8.6 with just 16MB of RAM???

I was under the impression that the installer refuses to install if
you don't have at least 24MB of physical RAM _AND_ have VM turned on
and set to 32MB...

In any case, back off of 8.6 with just 16MB of RAM. Go back to 7.6.1
or 8.1. And Cyberdog is hardly the fastest browser out there. If
you can live with IE, it's pretty good. Getting more RAM is an
eventual necessity, though.

Peace,
Drew

Not quite true. My several PowerBook 3400c's have GeoPort-compatible serial ports.

I have a pb3400c, 240mhz, 80m ram, 6 partitions on a 12g HD with OS9.1.

Was running fine until the last time I shut it down, I got a message that my
start up disk did not have a system folder and if I continued the shut down
I might not be able to restart. I tried to open some appls but they would
not open because they couldn't find the extensions and the System folder was
not on the disk.

I figured the directory got messed up and I would be able to boot from a CD
and fix the disk or reload the system.
WRONG. Have tried numerous CDs. They load the extensions, get a desktop with
only the CD icon in top RH corner, then the system freezes with the pointer
changing into a clock.
The TechTool 3 Pro loads with the TT icon in top RH corner and the Apple,
File, Edit, View, Special, Help across the top. then it freeze like the
other CDs. The disks do not show up on the desktop.

Tried zapping the P-Ram, loading with extensions off and it made no
difference.

Anyone have any idea what happened and how to fix it?

It sounds like Finder (from the CD) is choking when it tries to mount
the harddisk which does indicate a potentially severe problem. Try
using DOCS (Delete-Option-Command-Shift) to start up from the CD.
This should keep the HD from being mounted. Since you zapped the
PRAM it may not work. DOCS avoids mounting and booting the start up
disk as specified in PRAM. Since it's been zapped it will depend on
what if any default is. Assuming it does work try updating the disk
driver on the HD, it's possible this got corrupted. If that doesn't
work then try whatever disk tools you have.

If DOCS doesn't work it gets more difficult. Normally what I would
do is to unplug the power cable from a problematic drive, boot and
then power up the drive but that isn't possible with a 2.5 drive,
the power and data are on a single cable. You might need to get an
adapter that lets you plug the 2.5 drive into cabling for a 3.5
drive which would let you unplug the power cable.

Guy,

You are probably right. DiskWarrior should be able to repair this. That's
what it specializes in. Can you get a hold of a copy from somebody you know
to fix it.

Afterwards, make sure you have blessed your System as well. This is
sometimes easily forgotten after an install and can lead to the problems you
are having.

If the corruption has progressed beyond DW's capability, you might need to
reinstall your System Folder. Just make sure to Bless it afterwards. (Drag
System file to desktop and then put back).

Good luck.

it freezes when trying to mount the hd, could be various reasons, i
never met this in a powerbook but in other macs, and my fix has been
to disconnect the powerchord to the hd and reconnect it when the mac
has started from cd or another hd, but this is risky and a would
imagine almost impossible in a powerbook, because you need to have it
open when you start it, i hope someone else has a more refined aid to

that finder/system has becomed renamed , anyone suggestion of any

I saw, while in transit thru the student union a few days ago, this sweet-looking
*tiny* little Mac laptop with yes, a backlit keyboard (or glow in the dark or
something hip about its vibe) and I asked the young man behind
the counter a little about the machine...

...coming away from that short conversation I knew it was just a little G3, maybe it
had twice the RAM I do, but big deal...

One of our 1400cs machines took a spectacular fall a few weeks ago, a heartwrenching 5
foot curving plummet onto a concrete floor that we only heard, not saw (thank the
cats) and -- no damage. None.

Amazing.

Great. Then it allows you to skip the internal HD when booting. Thanks...

I just resubscribed to this list and didn't catch any of this thread, but
from what I read here it may be something I'm interested in as well.

I'm thinking of upgrading my OS on my 5300cs from 7.6.1 to 8.1. Can I put
the 8.1 install on en external HD and boot from it to see how I like it
before I install it on the internal HD? Is the SCSI bus roughly the same
speed as the internal IDE(?) bus? If it matters the drive will probably
be a 1.2G Quantum pulled from an 8500.

Thanks,

J White

there's no way to mount that type of image disk on an older system.

Really? That's interesting. I've never had any problem mounting
.dmg files on my Macs... Maybe I've just never run across one of
these UFS ones. I thought that the significance of .dmg was that it
was a more highly compressed disk image instead of a NDIF .img...

youll need diskcopy 6.4 or higher for some of them now
k

Indeed. Previously, DiskCopy 6.4 was only available on the service
support website, having never been really released. Last I knew,
though, it was pulled even from there. The highest version available
to OS 9 users is DiskCopy 6.3.3. .dmg files are really only targeted
at OS X users, so you shouldn't be getting one in OS 9 (those should
all be .img or .smi)

Still, if you need it and can't find it, let me know. I'll stuff a
copy of mine and email it to you.

6.4 has some fun features, too. It lets you create CD-master disk
images so you can convert your .img to a file that Toast can
recognize. Pretty handy!

Peace,
Drew

You are probably trying to open a UFS(?) disk created in X, and AFAIK
there's no way to mount that type of image disk on an older system. There
are some .dmg images out there using HFS+ which will mount, but it
doesn't sound like the that's your case.

It starts to boot and then gives the bomb icon and a

Is the CD-ROM terminated? For some reason, 5300's seem to be deep into
SCSI voodoo.

Mine (2 of them) won't mount the CD (Apple 300 external CD-ROM drive)
unless it's terminated, or if there's an external (not even turned on)
harddrive (another form of terminator, I guess) in the SCSI chain. With
a valid OS on the HD, an unterminated CD-ROM drive will mount, but I get
multiple images of the CD.

Are you holding down the 'c' key to force it to boot from the CD? Is it
a bootable CD?

parties in college. Set it to 3, and it works just fine.

Any particular reason?

And thanks for the info.

 Any suggestions?

Hi
I had a problem something like this with a PB5300. For some reason the 5300
would not recognize the 6 gig drive at all. I had to put the drive in
another laptop we have and format it there. I have never had any problem
since with it. Also check the ram card that you just installed. They have a
tendency to work loose. We have to open this one up once in awhile and push
down on the ram chip. It looks tight, but it will work itself loose. I hope
this helps.

The startup chime is a good thing. It cold have
likely been a combination of a dead PRAM battery and a

gone next, but 90 day warranties are good ;-)

I'm sure you'll have it, or another working one back

When you do get one back, I'd still seriously
recommend buying and replaceing the PRAM battery...
cheap and easy to do and will save you many future

Re: Help, my Powerbook 3400 is Dead!

2002-10-25 Thread Sionnach Aisling

Well, it does sound like a power board problem, but
try this...

Remove the bettery and leave it just plugged into AC
Power.

Press and hold the reset button in for about
1-2minutes. When you let go, it should attempt to
start the system. If it doesn't, try to start it with
the Start Button. Before it boots up, zap the PRAM
about half a dozen times, then let it come up...

Once it's up, insert the battery again.

Will that do anything at all for you?

Cheers,
Sionnach

For the modem, most scripts work for most modems. Pick a usr one, and
try it. If it continues to not work, it could well be a dead modem.

Hello Victoria,

Thanks for your message!

But if the Mac can't even *find* the modem, then Remote Access and TCP/IP
haven't had a chance to cause trouble yet. The Modem CP is a likely culprit
-- right script missing or not selected, but maybe the card slot is
defective.

Well, I got the script from the manufacturer's WEB page, so it should be
good... although perhaps mine is an older unit. Is there another Viking
PC-card user around?. I would like to compare serial/model numbers.

snip

Jose -- does the card show up on the desktop? Does it show up in Devices
and Volumes in the Apple System Profiler? Can you ask the seller if it
worked when he/she had this computer?

Yes, it shows up on the desktop as soon as I put it in the PC-Card slot (it
shows 'V90/K56 Flex'). But in the Profiler it does not show (where should
it be?)

About asking the seller, well, I got it at a charity auction so there is no
way to get that info (I know for sure as seller was unable to get some
basic info from the MAC)

Another possibility would be to check the card in my Toshiba laptop...

Thanks again!

Hi Jose,

So try the control panels. I would try first the Modem control panel if there
is one. It is possible a modem script is missing. Next, I would look at
Remote Access control panel to determine that the proper port, like the
cardbus port, is selected. Then I would look at the TCP/IP panel to determine
that the proper card is selected. Mine says the name of the card in the
connect via section. Of course, I am using 8.6, so the panels may not be
exactly the same.

Re: FAO - Jose/Re: HELP: PB1400 with Viking 56k PC-card modem

2002-09-05 Thread P Beecher

I had what I think is a similar problem. First the scenario: very long
story, but here is the short version. I had two 1400s that wouldn't
recognize the presence of the PCMCIA 56 K modem. Swapped a whole bunch
of parts to test nada. Got frustrated and bought a third that worked
OK. Verified that the three modems I had really did work. Played around
with the first two doing something else. Then noticed they now worked
recognizing the modem.

Big question, what was it that made the modems recognizable?? Only two
things that come to mind. The last time I swapped the card cages, maybe
I seated them better. Easy to check, just put one finger tip in the card
slot and push down. I also reset the PRAM from the keyboard, versus the
reset switch on the back. Maybe someone could confirm this works for
them.

Regards, Phil
