Re: [Qgis-user] Shapefile with file .cpg(codepage)

2016-07-07 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi Even,

the encoding is often a source of confusion. I work in a mixed
environment, me on Linux (so UTF-8 is the "System"-default), the rest is
using on Windows (with Windows-1252 I assume)
Transfering shapes often results in crippled data, and I have not found
workflows/settings that this will not happen.

Is there anything I can do about it, so we do not have to adjust things
manually all the time, or first look if the codepage is correctly set ?

Cheers
Bernd

Hi,
I have some shapefiles with an extra file having extension .cpg.
The .cpg extension is a optional extension for declaration of Code-Page.
Is this file knowed and supported from QGIS 2.14. ?

I don't know if the qgis when loading a shapefile is using the ogr or
instead is using an own shapefile provider, but however I don't know
if gdal is knowing and using this .cpg file.

Andrea,

OGR does use the .cpg file when present (I'm just updating
http://gdal.org/drv_shapefile.html since it only mentions the reading of
the
codepage byte in the DBF header, but the .cpg presence overrides that)
and

QGIS uses OGR to read shapefiles.

But, in QGIS, the default behaviour is to make OGR *not* use the encoding
detected by the OGR shapefile driver and use instead the user defined
encoding
in the GUI. Unless you go to Settings / Options / Data Sources and
uncheck the
"Ignore shapefile encoding declaration", in which case OGR will manage
the

transcoding itself.

[Qgis-user] Problems with ubuntu-unstable again

2016-07-15 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
some days ago, I updated to 2.16 from the repositories.
Everything worked fine.
Then yesterday, an update for saga came in.
Checked today, saga is not working in the toolbox.

Removing, reinstalling, fiddling, disabling/enabling ubuntu-unstable etc
etc -> finally ending up again in a situation with no working grass and
saga in the toolbox.

Using Linux Mint 17

Anyone an idea how to solve this, or is it just again waiting till things
get sorted out by itself in some weeks?

No, the dependencies are not actively tracked and therefore no automatic
rebuilds are triggered.

But the nightlies are rebuilt with current dependencies whenever a commit
(backport) has happened in the meantime. So you can resort to those for
"unstable" distributions (ie. distributions that have changed between
releases).

The next regular rebuild is on 29.7. for the 2.14.1 and 2.16.1 point

I think they do, (or at least we try) but for Ubuntu/Debian there are
just a lot of possible options, and trying to describe that clearly [0]
apparently does not make it really easier, just because of all the
possible options and/or combinations.

The download page for debian/ubuntu reflects the coders motto: Minimize
the code!
But people who are not used to read code have really difficulties getting
the picture there.

1. I am confident, that the biggest part of Ubuntu users would like to
have a release with the same features as they have if using the installer
on Windows. The offered release (http://qgis.org/debian) does not do this.
This is not mentioned anywhere that it lacks features. People have to find
out by themselves.

2. "Release with ubuntugis dependencies" is as cryptic as it can be. But
it is simply the version most people expect to receive. A full sentence of
what the differences between the repositories are would not let the page
explode. Maybe mention that MrSID and ECW is not supported in contrary to
Windows due to legal issues (and that you have to compile stuff to get it)

3. The instructions to add the ubuntugis functions are outdated for
several releases already. I remember it worked with the
ubuntugis-repository plus the ppa. The next version, I had to add as well
the debian-repository. The next time, I had to remove debian again. Now
it seems it works with the ubuntugis repository only, and no ppa.

If you do not give those explanations, where should they come from then?
Have mercy and simply add more text. Form follows function. If the
function breaks the form of the page, then maybe change the design.

I love QGIS and appreciate all your work!
Bernd

If somebody comes up with a better text, please do. Maybe split up
Ubuntu and Debian in two different blocks?

And as usual: not working (for you?) please provide a full better
working alternative :-) we are happy to add information that would make
it more clear.

Regards,

Richard Duivenvoorde

[Qgis-user] Upgrading to 2.16 -> delete Processing in .qgis2 to get new version

2016-07-20 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
I just upgraded from 2.14 to 2.16 on Linux Mint (after uninstalling
everything). I had some strange behaviours with the Processing Toolbox, so
I got the idea to delete the processing plugin folder from
.qgis2/Python/plugins and restarted QGIS. Then there was a new link at the
bottom of the toolbox, telling me that I can activate more providers.
Actually I did not change anything in the settings, but when closing them,
there was visible action on my hard disc. Afterwards, the quirks were gone.

It seems that the new Processing is only working correctly when doing
that(?)

This may apply to Windows as well.

Any comments from devs on that? In case this should be a general case when
upgrading, shouldn't this be told somewhere prominently on the website?

[Qgis-user] GDAL warp not functional in 2.16

2016-07-25 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
just realized that warp does not work anymore in my upgraded 2.16 on Linux

Neither in a model that worked before, nor through the raster menu.

The error shown there is
ERROR 5: MINUSERPIXELVALUE must be specified.

No idea what this means. Was not able to pick settings that would allow
warp to run.

Local issue? Any alternatives for warp (preferably working in a model)?

[Qgis-user] Making QGIS-Screencasts on Ubuntu/Mint

2016-07-27 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
for the first time I try to make some screencasts to explain QGIS-features
to customers etc.

The problem there is, that when recording the screen or window with no
matter which screencast software, the Map Canvas goes wild while moving
the mouse over it. It pans and zooms in or out, so it's nearly impossible
to explain something cause I always loose the focus on the features.

The problem does not seem to be QGIS-specific. In Google Earth, the same
moving and zooming happens.

Did anyone already encounter this problem or does anyone have a working
solution for this?

Re: [Qgis-user] Openstreetmap offline with QGIS

2016-07-29 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
I normally do it this way to have an offline basemap either for the mobile
phone or the notebook:

1. Install QuickMapServices (an add contributed pack in the settings) for
a variety of background layer. There are also different flavours of OSM,
so pick your favourite.

2. Install the (tagged as experimental) QTiles plugin.
Assuming you have to work in certain area at a time only, set your canvas
to this are.
In QTiles, you can choose between .zip and .mbtiles (but those mbtiles
work within QGIS for already a while). Pick mbtiles for file creation.
Choose your zoom level carefully. If you do not need too much detail, 15
will be enough. See http://gis.stackexchange.com/a/7443 for detail which
zoom level represents which map scale.

For me this setting resulted in 150MB file for an area of ca. 100 square
kilometers. Higher zoom level or multiple zoom levels will let this grow
exponentially. You will have to test a bit to find the right settings for
your purpose.
The creation of this mbtile will take a while cause it has to download all
the tiles for the area one after another.

So better test with a really small area before starting a big download.

Hope this helps
Bernd

Or try "Multipart to singleparts" also in the toolbox to create unique

2016-08-03 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Am 03.08.2016, 13:25 Uhr, schrieb simonc8 :

Thanks for this. The multipart to single part seemed to clean the file as
well as show that one of my polylines existed in three separate
segments. So

the file now contains 8 features whether I open it in QGIS or other
programmes.

When I was digitising I wanted to use part of one line I'd already
digitised

in another line, so I made a copy, cut the line and must have incorrectly
discarded the unwanted part, or inadvertently made a second copy.

If I want to combine my line which is currently in three segments into a
single feature how do I do that? Do the different segments have to have
identical end points to join properly? (At the moment there are small
gaps

between the different segments.)

Maybe now v.clean is the right tool. I love it ;)
Select "snap" there and set the threshold for the estimated width of your
gaps + x.
If this doesn't work (documentation refers to vertices snapped to lines,
not vertices to vertices),
try the same, but leave the so threshold low that it will not trigger a
snap, but go to the advanced settings and rise the threshold for snapping
there.
This is a different function in GRASS, where you can perform basic
cleaning and snapping while importing the data set into GRASS.

I think that you will then still have separate features, but spatially
aligned.
If your line segments have a common value or id, try "Line dissolve" from
SAGA in the toolbox.

Anyway, hard to give the proper hints without seeing the data. For me it's
always a trial-and-error-game, too.

Cheers
Bernd

[Qgis-user] Label buffer rings

2016-08-09 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
I'm searching for a convenient way to label buffer rings around a central
point the way I like it.
The standard layout looks like this in the screenshot.
https://ibin.co/2qyymNujAt17.jpg

I found no settings to get:
- the lables be stacked vertically to the top, instead of the default
horizontally to the left
- the labels be positioned on the outer line of the buffer zone. I could
live with the other numbers in the center of the ring, but the 1000 right
on top of the center is nonsens.

Dragging them manually to a position is still possible, but a "standard"
way of doing this would be preferable.

Any hints?

Cheers

Hi Carlos,
thanx for pointing me to this.
My layer already contained a field "distance" with the buffer rings size.
I added x and y fields to the layer, copied the center points x-value with
the Info-tool and filled it in for x, and then copied the y-value and
added the "distance" value to it in the field calculator.

Anyway it would be nicer to somehow just tell QGIS to label into other
directions than left.
And then being able to align labels to their center would make the world
nearly perfect.

Hi,
I'm searching for a convenient way to label buffer rings around a
central

point the way I like it.
The standard layout looks like this in the screenshot.
https://ibin.co/2qyymNujAt17.jpg

I found no settings to get:
- the lables be stacked vertically to the top, instead of the default
horizontally to the left
- the labels be positioned on the outer line of the buffer zone. I could
live with the other numbers in the center of the ring, but the 1000
right

on top of the center is nonsens.

Dragging them manually to a position is still possible, but a
"standard" way of doing this would be preferable.

Any hints?

Hi,

I'm wondering where those things like recent projects, last used

I completely removed 2.16 and the .qgis2 folder, and after reinstalling,
all these settings and infos are still present.

How is it possible to make a really CLEAN install?

Hi Stéphane,

did you already try to backup and remove your .qgis2 folder and QGIS2.conf

By this, you have real clean install. I also had several issues when
upgrading from 2.14 and this solved some.

If everything is fine afterwards, you could copy back your plugins

Re: [Qgis-user] Correct data source encoding for labels

2016-08-24 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
do you have this issue only with labels or do you have the same issue in
the attribute table (assuming that labels derive from atributes)?

I also have frequent issues with encoding. The only thing that worked for
me (in some cases) was to check "Ignore shapefile encoding declaration"
under Settings/Options/Data Sources/Data source handling.

If you try this, you should maybe restart QGIS and/or at least remove and
re-add the layer in question.

what i would like to do is add a "live" layer to my qgis projects, such

so, any suggestions?

at present, the only solution i have is a script which runs every n

then imports the new data. i'd like to know if anyone has other ideas or

Actually, this problem could be easily solved, if there was only a single

And yes, I was told to change this myself and given privileges to do so a

Not like it matters much in this case.
We have packages in qgis.org/debian/ against the plain versions of the

newer dependencies from - and only from - ubuntugis-unstable.
Looks like it's hard for people to accept that there are also ubuntu

because it has ubuntu in it's name.

I was thinking about it last night (and I was up way to late) and it is
a bit confusing for the casual user. They've installed Ubuntu (or
mint/debian/>xubuntu/etc) and they may not understand ubuntu is based
off debian. So like you said - they see debian but want to use Ubuntu.
They go to >UbuntuGIS and they see the repositories for UbuntuGIS and
the choice is unstable (and no one likes unstable software) and stable
(which doesn't >contain the newest software). So you end up going "Use
Unstable because it's stable and current".

Under my /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory I made a qgis.list file
and put the following in there:
deb http://qgis.org/debian xenial main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu
xenial main
Why? That are the packages not based on ubuntugis with the
dependencies from

ubuntugis.

Do I have this wrong? I thought I had the repositories for the install
correct based off the directions on qgis.org. Which I could completely

[Qgis-user] Composer Atlas: How get rid of the big red cross when there is no image?

2016-10-26 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
I set up a neat atlas for displaying a row of 50 sample plots. On a second
page, I want to show 2 pictures taken of these plots automatically with an
expression including the path || @atlas_pagenumber || '_1.jpeg' or
'_2.jpeg' to display up to two photos named e.g. 1_1.jpeg, 1_2.jpeg.

This works really great! The problem is, that for some plots, we do not
and have any picture or only one. In composer, these missing images are
marked with a big red cross.
Unfortunately, these red crosses are also exported, which looks quite
shitty.

Is there any clever way of forcing QGIS not to export these place holders
but just not to print anything at this place?

The only (boring) idea I came up with till now, was to create empty white
images and name them accordingly to avoid the red crosses.

Thanx

Hi Harrissou,
thanx for the hint. I already saw the checkbox, but had no idea what to do

My problem now is, that I have really no idea what to put in the "case

Maybe something like
'/mypath/'|| @atlas_pagename ||'_1.jpeg' IS NULL or so?

I do not know what is expected to be returned that this option will
trigger. There seems not to be a boolean type or so. The documentation
does not tell what to do there.

Still confused, but there might be a solution...

This is odd... A null picture expression should be rendered empty, not

The expression above would only result in 0 if @atlas_pagename is null.

Well, yeah, I was too early to announce the solution. In fact this did not
render the missing image, but also not the one which is there :(

This should do it. But now I am again where is started: When the image is

holders but just not to print anything at this place?

The only (boring) idea I came up with till now, was to create empty
white images and name them accordingly to avoid the red >crosses.

This is odd... A null picture expression should be rendered empty, not
as the red cross. The red cross is intended only as an >obnoxious,
obvious indicator that a picture path was set but couldn't be found.

The expression above would only result in 0 if @atlas_pagename is null.

Nyall

Well, yeah, I was too early to announce the solution. In fact this did
not render the missing image, but also not the one which is >there :(

case when
'/media/Daten/IVL_Projekte/2016024_Feldhamster_NEA/2_EINGANG_MA/Bernd/QGIS/Fotos/'||
@atlas_pagename ||'_1.jpeg' IS NULL

THEN
1
ELSE
0
END

This should do it. But now I am again where is started: When the image
is there, it is rendered, when not, the red cross is >exported as well.

That's because that expression is just testing whether the concatenated
string itself is null, not whether the corresponding file >actually
exists.

My advice: make a small python custom function 'file_exists' which
checks for the existence of a file. Then change your picture path
>expression to something like:

Case when file_exists( 'media/' ... Etc) then 'media/' ... Else null end

That should get you the result you are after.

Nyall

Hi Nyall,

unfortunately, I have still no clue of python.
I now added blank images for the missing ones :(

I think I will at least file a bug report for the red cross not being
rendered.

Re: [Qgis-user] Plea for help with monochrome maps for publication

2016-11-11 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Have a look at http://colorbrewer2.org

There you can check for grey-scale tones that are distinguishable and
printer friendly, so you can set up a palette with those values.
The downside of grey scales is, that there are not so many different tones
available as when working with colours.

[Qgis-user] Can not edit some fields (2.14.8)

2016-11-19 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
I encounter a strange problem when trying to edit fields in a layer.
I have a polygon layer and a csv list of actions to be taken on these
areas.
So I joined the attributes with the toolbox to attach the actions to the
polygons (NOT joining via properties)

Now I have to edit some of the attached data, cause they are false
positives (due to multiple matching ids).

But some of the attached fields are now not editable, they are just greyed
out on the form.
When I look at the properties, they are just the same string fields as the
others.

I thought that this might be some of the ESRI-shape quirks, so I saved the
layer to sqlite.
There, I was able to edit one polygon (emtpy the attached fields). But
after saving the changes, the effect was back again, some fields are
greyed out in the form again.

I never encountered such a problem before, and I'm quite clueless what to
do, and of course I am in a big hurry.

See attached screenshot of the fields.

Anyone an idea what might be the problem or how to work around this?

Cheers
Bernd

the same way as if I set some expression in point layer's

on single page just one feature from those point layer. So if I browse

feature.

Each point in my point's layer is a place, that I want to show in scale

map that showed where on Earth is that place :). Sorry if my question

Hi Peter,
welcome to the Babylon of computer stone age ;)

I think a lot of people share your confusion with codepages.
Your "system" encoding is that of your Windows, so presumably (in Western
Europe) windows-1252 or CP1252 or ISO 8859-15.

On a Linux system, it is normally UTF-8.

I often run into problems with the encoding on my Linux system when
dealing with files from Windows systems and vice versa.

Having files of mixed encodings in a project is a nightmare.
Those problems also seem to derive from files like gpx, kml etc. which
always seem to be generated using UTF-8.
So even when I decide to handle everthing in Windows-style and convert
files to windows-1252, those UTF-8 files bring in problems.
Same with the processing toolbox, where some algos happily switch the
output encoding.

When unchecking „Ignore shapefile encoding declaration“, UTF-8 seems to be
used internally (see https://hub.qgis.org/issues/11019).
But I have problems understanding all this, and worse, QGIS seems to not
understand all this as well all the time.

P.s. Haven't touched ArcGIS for years. How does this handle different code
pages in a project?

Hi,

for me this sounds more like he is getting new points once in a

wants to join those attributes to the new points "automatically"

The biggest problem for users is to rethink the workflow from the
end to

the beginning and to know the limitations.

The outcome should be a point layer with the polygons attributes. If
those

points (layer A) are from GPS as Randy assumes, they have to be
reprojected to the parcels layer (layer B) before being able to join
them

spatially(layer C). The spatial join in the toolbox produces layer D.

Most probably, the resulting layer D is going to to be edited in
some way
(adding notes about size, the progress, classifications, whatever),
so you
will have to find a way to preserve those new attribute while being
able to

add new points without much trouble.

The processing toolbox is a good way to do these steps, though it
produces

a lot of temporary files cluttering the project.

A better way for all those repetitive tasks, is to use the graphical
modeller, to create a workflow which only has to be triggered once
new
points come in, and the resulting file can be saved as new a file
e.g.
with the current date in the name, so you have kind of an archive

overwrite previous files (and destroy your work in case something

So I can imagine a model with input layer A (new points in WGS84
without attributes) and a parcel layer B (in >>>>>whatever

reproject layer A and C will be created as an intermediate step.

Next input layer is the latest result layer D, reprojected and with
attributes.
Merge layer C and D -> E. Now delete all columns which are from
layer B (from the last spatial join. >>>>>Unfortunately, you can

[Qgis-user] Fwd: [R-sig-Geo] RQGIS release 0.2.0

2017-01-19 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
just wanted to forward this email from the r-sig-geo mailing list about
interfacing QGIS from R.

Maybe it is of interest for some.

--- Weitergeleitete Nachricht ---
Von: "Jannes Münchow"
An: r-sig-...@r-project.org
Kopi

Dear list members,

today we are happy to announce a new version of RQGIS! RQGIS establishes
an interface between R and QGIS, i.e. it allows the user to access the
more than 1000 QGIS geoalgorithms from within R. The most important news
is that you can run again the most recent QGIS releases (>=2.18.2) with
RQGIS without having to modify Python source code. This modification
became necessary due to a bug introduced in QGIS 2.16 (see
https://github.com/jannes-m/RQGIS#rqgis-modifications-v-216-2181).

This release fixes also several bugs which we detected thanks to user
feedback. To learn more about these, please refer to
https://github.com/jannes-m/RQGIS/releases/tag/v0.2.0.

Re: [Qgis-user] Porblems with labeling Coordinate grid and the numbers-Change

2017-02-07 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi Stefan,

I can't answer to your questions, cause I have real difficulties
understanding your problems.
I just can advise you to switch your QGIS language to English under
"Settings/Options/Locale", so you are able to use the correct terminology
in English when posting questions and searching for answers.

It would always be good to have screen shots to be able to visualize the
problems, but as the mailing list has a limit of 100kb for attachments,
it's sometimes hard to do so.

A better resource for help on such things IMHO is stackexchange. E.g. for
your problems use
http://gis.stackexchange.com/search?q=qgis+composer+coordinates to get a
list of questions/answers that might cover your issues.

Re: [Qgis-user] Join hangs in Las Palmas

2017-02-07 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
did you already try to create a new joined layer with the processing
toolbox instead of creating a "loose" join with Properties/Joins?

I almost never do joins through the properties but instead create
permanent joins with "Join attributes table" from the toolbox.

It could be possible that your machine has not enough power/memory when
non-permanently joining huge data sets.

Just out of curiosity:
Maybe you could try it once with sqlite instead of SpaliaLite and see if

When restarting QGIS, this folder will be newly created, though your

Hi Andreas,
as I understood the feature request, he means a "real" mask that is not
only masking the display, but all features outside of the mask for any
geoprocessing.
I faintly rember this from ArcGIS which I didn't use for ages, so I have
no idea how well this is working how its done technically.

But the idea, that when working with numerous layers of different extent,
not to have to crop them them each individually to fit into a window of
interest, but just to assign a mask layer/bbox to them, sounds very good
to me.

Seriously - the microdonations are fine and well-meant, but with
micro-donations you can't finance 30k. At least this is fact from other

I would not recommend Mint - apart from being not an officially

Mint also has updates, so I do not see the point switching to somewhere
else. The main problem here is imho that ubuntugis-unstable and the qgis
repositories are very often out of sync. But a QGIS without all the bells
and whistles from ubuntugis is quite useless for me.

[Qgis-user] ubuntugis-nightly: No providers for GRASS and SAGA in Processing?

2017-09-27 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
just installed the development version on Ubuntu xenial from
ubuntugis-nightly repository.
In processing, there are only the qgis algos, but no grass nor saga. In
the settings, there is nothing shown about them.

Do I miss sth, or are the other providers not included yet?

Hi Pattrick,
sorry, but I do not understand what you are talking about.
I'm running the nightlies of the development version and have the
ubuntugis-unstable ppa activated.
GRASS and SAGA are present in the ppa and are running individually without
a problem. They are just not available through QGIS processing.
As the nightlies are built frequently, any changes on ubuntugis should be
adopted to within a short time. But there are still no providers for GRASS
and SAGA.
What does this have to do with the version of my OS? All necessary sources
derive directly from qgis.org or ubuntugis-unstable, as far as I can see.

Only xenial and older require ubuntugis for the latest versions, if you

set up a VM with zesty and QGIS 2.99 from the debian-nightly repository

It's simply that you can eliminate the ubuntugis dependency as a later
release of Ubuntu does not require it. Running Qgis in a Vm is also a
viable option if you can't change the OS on your computer. I run Qgis
now in VMs because I can doe 100% of the things that I could do natively
and I have drawn hundreds of kilometres of production maps with the
development masters running in Virtualbox desktop VMs.

Not a packaging issue. saga and grass7 are currently disabled processing

[Qgis-user] 2.18.13: WMS caching deactivated?

Hi,

im using the ubuntugis nightlies on Linux. For some time I have the

WMS I use takes ages to load, and normally it showed the numbers of tiles
dowloaded/loaded from chache. This doesn't happen anymore.

Is this a local problem or do others observe this as well?

[Qgis-user] Map tips: Show photos with HTML

I remember that this worked a while ago. At least in recent QGIS 2.18.13,
not a single method seems to work anymore.

Does anyone know what is going on there?

[Qgis-user] How to create a spatial view with spatialite-gui?

2017-10-23 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,

I am trying to create a spatial view in spatialite-gui.
The not funny thing is: It doesn't work.

For you to test:
Just import a layer from QGIS into a spatialite database.
Connect to the database in spatialite-gui.
Right-click on the DB and start the "Query/View Composer"

Tab Main:
Select your layer in "Main Table" an mark all displayed columns.
Tab View:
Just skip tother tabs and simply replicate you layer as a spatial view by
selecting "Create Spatial View"[could be used as a GIS Layer".
The input to select the geometry column (in my case "geom", which was also
selected in the Main Tab) get active, so select it.

Give a name to your new view, and the SQL statement should be ready by now.

Click OK.

Result:
The created view lacks all spatial stuff and imports into QGIS as a dumb
table.

I remember having tried this years ago already, searching the web high and
low for answers, but it hard to find a lot about spaialite at all.

Is this all a bug or just a feature or am I just too stupid to see the
obvious?

Any hints and references to useful documtes highly appreciated!

Cheers,
Bernd

Re: [Qgis-user] Basic Help

2017-10-28 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,

Am 27.10.2017, 19:29 Uhr, schrieb Louise Duffy :

I don't know if this is the correct format for asking these questions,
so please re-direct me as needed.

I am used ArcMap for many years to perform pretty basic stuff, but I am
not finding QGIS to be as easy of a transition as I had hoped. I am now
self->employed, doing some part time consulting for a few clients and I
do not have the budget to buy ESRI products, especially when QGIS has
such promise.
QGIS is for free, but it will cost you sth neverthelless: Time (while
ArcMap costs you money AND time)

In the past, my normal use of GIS was to pretty focused on being able to
connect dots from GPS data, digitize features using aerial photography
and other >basemaps. Producing a variety of maps for projects that
included exported tables of that data to show coordinates, lengths, area
or other characteristics.

I think this is what the majority of QGIS users do as well.

I downloaded QGIS version 2.14.19-Essen. I am not familiar with
programming languages, scripts or other behind the scenes stuff. When I
have looked at >tutorials QGIS has, the screens do not match what I see
or the process does not work as expected. I don't know if I am missing
something with the install or >just need a friendly guide to point the
way.

QGIS has a very fast development, so resources often can't keep the pace
and get outdated. But as Patrick mentioned, https://gis.stackexchange.com
is good resource to find answers and learn, or even ask own questions
(after proving that you could not find a suitable answer there).

Right now, I specifically need help with four things:

In some parts, QGIS workflows still require the use of plugins.

add basemaps from external sources (aerial, street, usgs quad),
For adding basemaps, install QuickkMapServices (which by default only
ships a few basmaps, so you can extend it through the plugins settings:
Settings/More services -> Get contributed pack)

ArcMap folks tend to think that the ESRI-way is the only valid way to do
things. QGIS does not "pollute" your attribute table with the informations
you are used to have and now ask for, but you can add them quickly.

calculate/display area of polygons in attribute table;
Open attribute table, open field calculator, create new field "area", pick
format/field length/precision.
In the search field to the right, enter "area". The search shows you e.g.
"$area" under "Geometry". Just double-click on $area", it shows up in the
expression field -> OK

add X,Y coordinates of existing points to attribute table;
Do similar with a new x and y field: search for x, double-click $x (and
have a look at all the other functions available) etc etc.

Or even easier:
Click Processing in the Menu bar, Activate the Toolbox, Search for "Add":
Under QGIS geoalgorithms -> Vector table tools, you will find Export/Add
geometry columns.
This will not change your original dataset, but creates a new temporary
copy (which you will have to make permanent later by "Save as...)

search for and add points based on X,Y coordinates.
Right-click somewhere in the Menu bar and activate the "Advanced
digitizing panel"

Make your point layer editable
enable advanced digitizing tools (look at the popup-hints that show when
hovering the symbols. The x and y fields get active.
Enter your coordinates and lock them (with the lock symbol). You get a
cross-hair showing the position.
Digitizing toolbar: add feature. Click somewhere in the canvas, the new
point will be created at the cross-hair position.

Thanks!

Louise

Learn to search and use: Plugins Repository, Field calculator functions,
Processing Toolbox functions!

Did I miss sth?

It's free (Apache License) and available as Python Module (installable

Hi Bernd,

Admittedly, geoTriMesh does get rather slow when using "larger" input
datasets. So you either might want to test with some lower >resolution
data, or use the tiling-option, which seperates the input data into
smaller subsets.

For testing purposes, I included some sample files within the download,
you can find them in the plugin-directory
(\geoTriMeshQGIS>\lib\geotrimesh\demodata). For a low resolution test
run, you can use, for example:

Bondaries: 'osm_2017_pottenstein_simple.shp'

DEM: 'gtopo30_1996_clip_pottenstein.tif'

Orthofoto: 'bmng_2004_clip_pottenstein.tif'

It should not take longer than a couple of seconds.

I totally agree that a little help file would be useful. I will see to
writing some more documentation in the near future.

Best regards,

Michael

Hi Michael,
I installed the plugin an tried to test it.

So far I got no results. I tried it with a clip of a DEM of 10km radius
of the EUR_DEM Dataset.
Seems it does not want to finish, the log sais for a while {"percent":
99.93917274939103, "status_desc": "Calculating row 821 of 822"}

Maybe you could write some general recommendations about which sizes to
use, caveats etc (aka a "little" help file ;))

Cheers

Re: [Qgis-user] Greek characters in attribute table

2017-11-05 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,
I downloaded some sample and there was a cpg-file (open in text editor)
telling me UTF-8. That would be the other way round, from System to UTF-8
then.

So best check for those cpg-files.

In the layers properties, you have to change the encoding from "System"

[Qgis-user] Win7 64bit: GRASS-plugin nearly nonfunctional (Bernd Vogelgesang)

2011-10-12 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi there,
i tried really everything, but the grass plugin really gives me a hard time.
First i used a fresh osgeo4w installer advanced:
loading a layer is fine when not using advanced options, doing stuff
like v.clean.bpol makes grass and qgis freeze in 80% of the time, mostly
reporting that it can't delete a hist-file or other problems.

Uninstalled everything and used the desktop version: same problems
Unistalled that completely and used the standalone version: no luck
I'm really desperate now. I have to clean up lots of messy polygons
drawn by someone with google earth, and the grass plugin for me is the
only way to solve that.

Any ideas what might cause that problem on Win7? It seams to me that
Grass is somehow not fully allowed to write/delete stuff there.
This happens to me on 2 different Win7 64bit machines, so i assume i
can't be the only one facing these problems!

[Qgis-user] Annoying CRS-Problem with EPSG 31468 / 2167

2012-03-21 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi there,
in Germany, we still quite often have Gauss-Krüger 4 projection for the
source data from clients, formerly edited with ArcGIS.

QGIS obviously has some problems with GK4 (EPSG:31468)
When i import a shape with a .prj-file from ArcGIS, it doesn't promt for
the crs, but immediately loads the shape.
The tricky think is: if you do not check the crs manually every time,
you run into chaos, cause QGIS always sets the crs to "Pulkovo 1942(83)
/ Gauss Krueger zone 4 (deprecated)" (EPSG:2167) which has quite an
offset to the other crs.

I'm quite confident that it's not a problem of the prj-file from ArcGIS,
cause when i import a GK4-Layer into GRASS, there set the crs to GK4 as
well, do my stuff and then send it back the result to QGIS, there the
former EPSG 31468-Layer again is set to EPSG 2167 too !!!

Has anyone an idea how to prevent this or what's the reason for this?
It's really annoying and quite hard to explain to clients to check
everytime the crs when they load a layer file.

2012-03-22 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang
So, the problem was now described thoroughly, but what are the conclusions now?I'm going to spread QGIS in my region in the next months, and it's quite hard to explain to the people, who to 99% work with EPSG 31468-data, that they can't ever rely on any data they produce and that they have to double-check each layer after creation for the right CRS, even if they set it correctly in each setting available?!?I'm not too familiar with all those packages involved handling the CRSs, so can someone please point me the way who to address with this problem? For novice QGIS-users, this "bug" is a real exclusion criterion for QGIS for they will only create crap with it!Again my findings:Options settings: new layers and projects are created with EPSG 31468, promting for CRS ist set.- EPSG 31468-Layers with a prj-file from ArcGIS get loaded as 2167 without promting for the CRS- EPSG 31468-Layers loaded into a EPSG 31468-Region in GRASS are handed back to QGIS as ... 2167- New Layers created in some plugins (like some ftools-plugins), added to the TOC, are in ... 2167 .. or even 3397What can i do? (And i really wonder what all those other german users do and why the don't complain...)Thanx for adviceBernd(QGIS 1.7.4, osgeo4w advanced install, Win7 64bit)___

2012-03-28 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang
A.S: err ... only replied to Gary directly ... really don't know how to work with mailing lists:Hi Gary, hope my non-diplomatic style is not too embarrassing. Now, the mailing list here seems to be the place for the power users and developers, but how do i retrieve infos from that? i already store all those mails and try to do local text search in my mail client, to find answers. But here, the threads are scattered over several digests, and i can't see a way how to get a grip on that in more structured way.The forum seems to be mainly used by novice users, who get answers by a handful of advanced people. The default forum settings are set that you won't get an email notification when someone is answering, so a huge amount of threads die, because the thread-initiators and participants don't get aware that there is something going on. I already asked to change that, but to no avail so far. Then, there are only 3 really useful categories (from the users point of view):  Help on using QGIS Build and Install questionsShare Tips, Tricks and Ideas Here most of the communication is done in the first. It's very hard to find threads about a special problem, cause all the topics are just stuffed into one big bucket and novice users often lack the terminology to do successful full-text search to find answers.Solved problems are mostly not marked as such, so you have to do a lot of reading and searching which ends up very often with no results. Then there is this wiki(http://hub.qgis.org/wiki/quantum-gis/How_do_I_do_that_in_QGIS), which is in a concurrence to the "Share Tips, Tricks and Ideas" and it seems that there is not a lot going on too.(besides, writing an article and writing an article in a wiki where you need just another account are two different things and which rejects a lot of people)What i propose is a platform with a single login, which combines all those functions of the forum, mailing lists and wikis.Posts of any kind should be able to be tagged with an activly developed hierachical taxonomy for easier retrieval and interconnection of different types of content.Especially the enormous modularity of QGIS with all its plugins needs a better and more structured way of getting informations of what this and that modules does, what which setting means, what bugs people found, how they found workarounds etc. All this could be accessible just by one taxonomy term with the name of the modul for example, spiced up with sorting for popularity, ratings or whatever. There should also be a group system for different audiences, projects, interests, languages (not everyone is a fluent english reader or writer) so people are able to pick the stuff that suits them and subscribe to certain groups, taxonomy terms, projects, events, working fields etc. and get notified in a structured way when something of their interest had occured. The easier the access to already produced knowledge, the more likely it will be that some people take the effort and collect the bits for own articles, tutorials, working examples etc.I never managed to build sth that i propose myself so far, but i invest quite a time investigating "better" ways to connect communities and generate and preserve knowledge.By doing so, i stumbled upon drupal some years ago, where i see a lot of tools (nearly too many) to build sth that would provide all means to develope a communication and knowledge management strategy. There maybe other platforms, but drupal is the only one i know enough about to be sure that it could solve a lot of issues with a modest investment in time and infrastructure. Thanks for your timeBerndAm 27.03.2012, 20:34 Uhr, schrieb Gary Sherman :>> On Mar 27, 2012, at 10:25 AM, Bernd Vogelgesang wrote:>>> There are more modern and sustainable ways for exchanging knowledge and >> provide user interaction than this. [Qgis-user] Re: SEXTANTE for QGIS has been released

2012-03-30 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang
I know sextante from gvSIG already, and i think its main idea is, to
provide a toolbox like in ArcGIS.
The current plugin/functions management in QGIS is a bit "chaotic", in
the 1.9-version, the plugins are much better sorted according to their
scope already.

But the sextante-concept seems to be even more user friendly from the
start (with search function , functions sorted into trees, not having to
fumble through menus and sub-menus when repeating functions)
Of course, like with all software functions, you will have to learn how
to use them by testing.

I have really no idea whats technically behind it, and how good it will
integrate into QGIS, or just represents a concurring concept, but i
would prefer the sextante-way to become the default one in qgis.

Ok, then QGIS will just look like another ArcGIS, but what ? ;)

Having kind of model-builder coming with it will be also great news for
a lot of people having to perform boring repetitive work all the time.

In one word: GREAT ! ;)

Bernd

Hi
Would it be possible to give a 10 000 mile overview of what Sextante does?
There is quite a mixture of skill levels in this group and I for one am
certainly not well versed into all the tools of the trade. I appreciate the
announcement as it provides exposure to possible future tools that could
be useful to me, but I believe that for the benefit of your tool/product it
is in your interest to bring us less well versed people up to speed. This
mailing list in some respects is like a tv channel with a thread like this
being an advertisement. If I have to go and read about a product to
understand what it does after having seen a tv advert then it has failed. I
should not be doing reading to understand what the product does but should
be reading to get a better understanding of how the product can be
applicable to my specific problem.

I did try to read the manual and view a few of the youtube videos in the
sextante channel but am still non the wiser.

[Qgis-user] Re: Closure of forum

2012-03-31 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang
Hi,I'm a bit shocked about what my small remark on maybe spending some donations on creating a knowledgebase for QGIS set loose. My observation is, that the acting people still focus on their prefered tools and ways of communication, and only want to make quick changes and maybe set another link here or there. The ones are happy with mailing lists, the others wanna move more to wikis and the next think that stackexchange is the solution. But my point was not about using existing stuff, but building something completely new, which really fits the needs and is not only a compromise of whats available and what is needed.A forum is no wiki, a wiki can't be used as a ticket system, a mailing list can't serve as "best practice" collection ...I understand, that you all don't want to waste much time on creating such things, but use already available services. And I'm 100% sure that developers shouldn't waste their valuable time on those things anyway, but do what they can do best: develop QGIS!From the users perspective (and i think thats the goal: to use the great things you all develop) this hole fragmented infrastructure has no "face" and it's really confusing. What is really missing is the "glue" between those tools, to make it easier for people to contribute. All this takes a lot of time to take care of, which most people don't have.Thats why i proposed to maybe spend donations for building a community platform, where all functions could be easily found and maintained.I can imagine that a lot of people don't like that idea for their reasons, but i think that's what QGIS really deserves!I'm just another ambitioned QGIS-user and no professional in this field, but i'm sure that if "WE" would decide to go that way, that other people are being found who can help bring things forward. At least we should try ...I myself will find the necessary infos sooner or later using google, but i'm sure that there are thousands of people outside who have no idea about QGIS's potential and value and who will get lost on their way to find answers ...ThanxBernd ___

Not all, or lets better say, nearly no Windows user really knows what the
registry is and what to do there without crashing the system, so answers
like "look in the registry" are not really helpful!

The disappearance of toolbars is a quite common problem in qgis.
I found
http://osgeo-org.1560.n6.nabble.com/toolbars-which-are-moved-are-away-td4476255.html
where is said, that you have to remove

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QuantumGIS\qgis\UI\state
in the registry.
When you restart qgis, the key is written again with the default state,
and all toolbars are visible again.

   1. Re: Default QGIS template for Windows users (Goyo)

toolbar
can be turned on and off under View -> Toolbars, but nothing changes in
the

appears

and can be managed under View -> Toolbars.

I assume there’s a modified default .qgs file in one user’s C:\Users

I’ve

Look for qgis related keys in the windows registry.

Re: [Qgis-user] any ideas how to get data from attribute table out of qgis

2012-06-22 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang
I can highly recommend using spatialite databases! (postgis seems to be
THE solution for all professionals, but spatialite has the charms that
even noobs can do it!)

QGIS handles "big" datasets from shape files quite inefficient and a lot
of actions just lead to a frozen application.

The same is valid for exporting data i fear.

I found a workaround that is a bit complicated, but is much faster and
more reliable than trying to do it with the core mechanisms.

1. create a spatialite database and import your shape:
For this i use the spatialite-gui.exe (http://www.gaia-gis.it/gaia-sins/).
Its faster and more reliable than the Qspatialite-plugin!
With the Qspatialite-plugin, connect to the database-file and load your
table as a layer into qgis.

2. Now you can do whatever you want with your attributes. Changes are
saved directly into the sqlite database.

3. Export your data:
In the spatialite-gui, right click on your table and export the data to
txt, csv, dbf etc etc

Before i'm able to use postgis in the future, i will for sure use
spatialite for all my qgis-work, cause it saved me hours of pain and
mostly did what i wanted (and i didn't even discover more than the obvious
functionalities yet)

Re: [Qgis-user] Add table excel and categorize

2013-11-11 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi,

1.
adding a csv is not the same like loading a shape. So you can't edit it.
Loading as dbf should give you write permissions (OpenOffice/Libre Office
still offer dbf support, while new Excel versions don't)

2.
I assume you joined the csv to an existing layer? In QGIS 2.0, the joined
columns are presented for classification, in 1.8 you will (i think) have
to make the join permanent by saving the joined layer to a new one. Then,
all attributes are editable as well.

Hope I answered your questions

I think the normal way to import as text delimited file should do it, or

CSV is indeed recognized as a string but I downloaded Quantum 2.0 and with

When I import CSV use " Custom delimiters " in this way successfully it

[Qgis-user] One-to-many Spatial View in Spatialite. Attribute table doesn't show records as desired

2014-02-12 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi there,

I have a polygon layer with an id and a table with multiple species
observations on that same id(area) in spatialite

I managed to create a spatial view and load it within QGIS.

When I use the identification tool on a polygon, all species
observations show up correctly in the info tool window, but for browsing
these informations, this is not really the best representation.

The attribute table on the other hand would be much better to read the
infos, but here, all species entries connected with one feature are
replaced by the first species data only (e.g. instead of 25 different
birds, it shows one entry 25 times.

Is this a bug or a feature or are there other tricks to get tabular data
of all those entries i can see with the identification tool?

The goal is to get a way for a collegue to select a polygon, and
immedately see all species found there in a tabular form.

Thanx for any help or hint

[Qgis-user] Spatialite VIEW in QGIS question

2014-02-18 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Hi folks,

I'm quite desperate, cause I do not seem to understand what I'm doing
wrong, or if it's just not possible to do.

I have a polygon layer in my spatialite database and a normal table with
bird observations. There are many observation entries for each item in
the polygons.

They share the simple field "id".

I created dozens of view, following strictly
http://www.gaia-gis.it/spatialite-3.0.0-BETA/spatialite-cookbook/html/sp-view.html
(and i REALLY can't find any other tutorials).

When i query "SELECT * FROM "test17"" in Spatialite GUI, it shows all
the lines with different observation entries for each polygon id, when i
load the VIEW in QGIS, it doesn't but duplicates the first matching
observation for one polygon over and over.

The idea is to quickly identify all observations when selecting a
polygon, and then go to the attribute table to see which species are there.

Is it possible to create a one-to-many spatial VIEW with Spatialite GUI ?
if yes
Whats the trick?
if no
Is QGIS just not able to show the views table correctly?
if no
Whats the trick?

Wasted many days on that now, and time is running away.

Please, someone, help

I usually cheat, and in making my View I do a left join to the attribute
table with the geometries. It ends up duplicating the geometries for
each match which can be inefficient on a large dataset but works
perfectly reasonable most of the time.

Then the regular info and select tools return multiple records.

Thank you Alex for your answer.

I think this combination was the only one I haven't tried yet.

But ... the outcome is as depressing as all my other, or even worse.
Instead of 37 features i now have 9725, and the attribute table has the
same amount of entries instead of some 700.

When loading the attribute table, there are only ERROR in the fields,
and it took some minutes till I was able to switch to "show only
selected". And ... surprise surprise, it again showed just the entry of
the first species in all of the rows instead of all the individual
observations.

Guys, this is a very sad topic and I really can't understand how people
can work with 1:n data even on the most basic level under these
circumstances ...
Or doesn't anyone work with 1:n data? Well, the the world I'm living in
is full of that ...

After nearly one week of trial and error, I am giving up now.

Cheers
Bernd

I do see potential for a plugin that simply executes a filter on one
table based on the selection in another table for a pre-defined
relationship (maybe there is one already).

I rarely need to visually explore the 1:n without aggregation. What I
love about spatial databases is that I can easily query whatever I want
including 1:n but I don't need to click on an individual.

What attribute about the second table do you need to know? How many,
average x, or even just a list of ids?

If you want the Birds per polygon check out the group concat from sqlite:
CREATE View birdlists as
SELECT group_concat(species), count(species)
FROM table1
JOIN table2
ON table1.id = table2.id
GROUP BY polygon

This gives you the list of birds per polygon as a view of the polygon layer.

Yes occasionally you want to click and get a list, I've done this in a
web page where you take the id, then query the db to return the rows
related. Like I mentioned before a python plugin should be able to do this.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex,

we need to have the list of simply all birds that have once been
observed there in the past.
I need the info of each observation what species, how many of that ,
year of observation and breeding status ... in short again: all lines
from the table that match the polygon id.
Nothing to calculate, nothing to group. We need to have an overview what
has happened in the past in these areas to be able to find
"interesting" species/year/status-combinations to be able to decide
about actions.

Just tried to build some views manually within the GUI (so without the
Query Composer) and these procedures here

http://www.gaia-gis.it/spatialite-3.0.0-BETA/spatialite-cookbook/html/sp-view.html

do not work at all. Seem to be outdated or what, errors over errors and in the
end I have geometryless geometries ... perfect.

I simply can't believe that none on this planet ever decided to post a simple
and working spatialite view creation script for 1:n somewhere in the web as a
template.

arrghh..

I have no time to test now, but from what I recall, this does not work :

Maybe you want to give it a last try. I can testify I have some

Another method is running a SELECT query in the DB Manager in QGIS,

Hi Olivier,
added ROWID to the VIEW. Same result in QGIS.

I also performed the select in the DB Manager as you proposed. When
executed, it perfectly show the results i would like to see in the

as layer is again the duplication of the the first entry for ROWID of
the polygon.

So, this is my select: Anything important missing?

SELECT "a"."ROWID" AS "ROWID", "a"."Geometry" AS "Geometry",
"b"."zahl" AS "zahl", "b"."jahr" AS "jahr", "b"."art" AS "art",

QGIS. Your example, as far as i understand, lacks a join-part
completely, but thats the culprit I fear.

I uploaded my testdb to dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/8b1g97qu3us15tq/asktest3.sqlite

There is only layer, a view and the table.

Could anyone try it out?
When you query the view with SELECT * FROM "Testview22" , I see the list
of observation I would like also to see in the QGIS attribute table, but
this just doesn't work. It also show 746 rows, but only 37 distinct sets
of information.

Cheers
Bernd

Re: [Qgis-user] Spatialite VIEW in QGIS question

2014-02-21 Thread Bernd Vogelgesang

Dear folks,
thanks a lot for all who tried to help.
I have a working solution now, which I will hopefuly be able to forge
into some script, so all steps for many layers will run more automatic.

I maybe had other working solutions before, but I made the mistake and
didn't see that I had selected the "one object only" selection mode in
QGIS ... so of course it only picked the most up laying polygon and
couldn't show me more info than just one row in the attribute table ...
too bad.

Sandro Furieri was so kind to help me along as well
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?shva=1#inbox/144507c0ecb4c392

The things that were important: not to have a ROWID in the joined table,
but rename it
Creating a table instead of a view. ("... SQL VIEWs are rather
extravagant and whimsical objects, and they could

easily introduce many hard-to-be-solved undesired side effects. ...")

So as a sample for one of my layers, it looks like this now:

CREATE VIEW View_PUNKTE AS
SELECT a.ROWID AS ROWID, a.Geometry AS Geometry, b.ora_nachweis_id AS
ora_nachweis_id, b.zahl AS zahl, b.jahr AS jahr, b.art AS art, b.sta AS sta

FROM ASK_PUNKTE AS a JOIN ask_art AS b USING (id);

INSERT INTO views_geometry_columns (view_name, view_geometry,
view_rowid, f_table_name, f_geometry_column, read_only) VALUES
('view_punkte', 'geometry', 'rowid', 'ask_punkte', 'geometry',1);

CREATE TABLE Abfrage_PUNKTE AS
SELECT rowid AS old_rowid, Geometry, ora_nachweis_id, zahl, jahr, art, sta
FROM View_PUNKTE;

SELECT RecoverGeometryColumn('Abfrage_PUNKTE', 'geometry', 31468,
'MULTIPOINT', 'XY');

SELECT CreateSpatialIndex('Abfrage_PUNKTE', 'geometry');

I have now finally realized/accepted, that there is NO WAY to avoid
duplication of geometries (very very sad) for 1:n relations in QGIS, so
this really bloats the layers ... but thats life.

Maybe I could skip some of this and make a table directly from a select,
but I'm happy with at least one working solution.

Now i will try and put all this into a batch script that will generate
me those layers automagically cause filling in all the separate commands
for several layers is boring, time consuming an error prone.

So thanx mates,
Bernd

Hi folks,

I'm quite desperate, cause I do not seem to understand what I'm doing
wrong, or if it's just not possible to do.

I have a polygon layer in my spatialite database and a normal table
with bird observations. There are many observation entries for each
item in the polygons.

They share the simple field "id".

I created dozens of view, following strictly
http://www.gaia-gis.it/spatialite-3.0.0-BETA/spatialite-cookbook/html/sp-view.html
(and i REALLY can't find any other tutorials).

When i query "SELECT * FROM "test17"" in Spatialite GUI, it shows all
the lines with different observation entries for each polygon id, when
i load the VIEW in QGIS, it doesn't but duplicates the first matching
observation for one polygon over and over.

The idea is to quickly identify all observations when selecting a
polygon, and then go to the attribute table to see which species are
there.

Is it possible to create a one-to-many spatial VIEW with Spatialite
GUI ?

if yes
Whats the trick?
if no
Is QGIS just not able to show the views table correctly?
if no
Whats the trick?

Wasted many days on that now, and time is running away.

Please, someone, help

Bernd

I think, that you have misunderstood some of the basic tenets of
  relational database technology:

If you establish a straight 1:n relationships in a
relational database (as SQLite, SpatiaLite or
Postgres/PostGis) you'll get at least n rows in the resulting
view; if you want it otherwise you'll have to use aggregate
functions to group and aggregate your results

If you want to select 1 row in a main table and afterwards
have a look at n rows in a sub-table that's related to the
main table by some common field(s)  -  that's  the
responsibility of the presentation layer meaning Access, Excel
or QGIS . But QGIS hasn't this functionality before ver. 2.2
  (which isn't released yet).

If you want the above mentioned function in QGIS, you have to wait
for QGIS 2.2 or download some bleeding edge QGIS like QGIS Weekly
(http://qgis.org/downloads/weekly/) . Look at this article:
  http://blog.vitu.ch/10112013-1201/qgis-relations
Hi Bo,yes, I misunderstood that obviously, or i was "hoping" that those things were already easier in the year of 2014 ;)Anyway, found a working solution my collegue is happy with. I also tested with master yesterday after reading the link about qgis relations, but trying this only crashed the system. But we all are awaiting a bright future with easy to establish 1:n relations, I'm sure of that, and then nothing will stop me ;)ThanxBernd
