Not sure, but I might have one. The kind on your inner high thigh. In the
crotch area. I have a slight bump there and when touched it sends my blood
pressure way high. No sweating, but a pounding headache. Like 195/98. Once
it's bothering me, if I recline my head feels like it's going to blow up. 3
out of the last 5 days. Today is ok. Doc wants me to see a General Surgeon.
Have him take a look at it.
For along time just touching my crotch area made me spasm bad, my chest gets
real tight, but now I feel like my heart is getting squeezed by a fist and my
head is blowing up. The only time this has happened before is when bowel or
bladder had an issue. I just had the runs from antibiotics, so it might be
that, or constipation from too much Pepto. But it's been a week now. Touching
the area might be causing my stomach to spasm, I've been having gas, and that
could do it, but man those headaches hurt bad. If it gets that bad again, I'm
going to the ER, I just hate to go and then find out it's just gas, runs or
 constipation.

It's something noxious thus causing you the sweats. You're going to have to
keep a diary of some kind. maybe now your bowel routine is too much.

I've been dealing with this for years and understand your frustration. it is
quite debilitating.
Have you been checked for bladder stones?
Check your skin everywhere, your toenails, are you wearing new shoes, new
socks? Does it occur a week before your period more or less?

When is your first meal?

Is it better lying down or sitting up?

Do you have external hemorrhoids?

Wrap a towel around your neck. I've gone through dozens a day that they
literally drip. Keep yourself hydrated.

[QUAD-L] Restore NYS Spinal Cord Injury Research Funding

2013-02-23 Thread Elizabeth Treston

Take action to restore research funding.

This program has raised over $70 million for spinal cord injury research
since its inception in 1994. Unfortunately in 2010, Governor Paterson raided
the fund and put the monies into the general fund. That trend has since
 continued.

This research funding is collected through an additional levy on moving
violations in New York State. It is collected specifically for this purpose,
but it's being used for other things. That's just wrong.

Please help us restore the funds by reaching out to Governor Andrew Cuomo and
Commissioner of Health Dr. Nivav Shah.

First of all, I wish you success with your cause. 2nd, as the imaginary
General Manager of Hilton Embassy Suites Hospitality I have to ask What
size? Should it be equipped with a Trapeze and auto-remote operation. How
much weight should it be able to hold? Should it be hospital chrome or
powder coated? Should the hospital bed be ordered to support other adaptive
devices, for breathing? Should we order special mattresses for each
individual need? Because a hospital bed is not required under ADA
Guidelines, it would be a courtesy or convenient item and should we charge
extra for the courtesy. Consider that any air-type mattress could be
subject to puncture and require an occasional repair, for the next customer.
Where would we store such a bed, in between uses and ensure that it is clean
and sanitized for the next user.
Presently, there are several hospital beds on the commercial market place.
They begin around 1500 dollars and go up to more then 6500 dollars. Can you
assure us that by purchasing such a special needs bed for the general
resident with disAbilities that we will not be sued for not having the
proper medical bed for a hotel guest. The cost of outfitting each of our
properties with just one bed could cost millions. How do we justify such a
cost for something that may not be used that often. Your input is wisely
solicited.

I'm asking if each and everyone of you make one toll free phone call for

say something like this;
I am a person with a physical disability and want to make a suggestion
that your hotel chain provide one of your rooms to be equipped with a
hospital bed where the head, knees and bed rise up and down. Please keep in
mind that this bed may also be used by any guest, disabled or not. You may
go on to say; I would travel moe if this type of bed were in place.
If anybody on this list is on any other list, I'm asking if you would
please pass this plea along and also to pass it on to your friends and
family. Let's make our voice heard and try and make a change for the better.

Some time ago, I asked people on this forum how I might best help
quadriplegics.

The most common response: invent a money tree.

I am sorry to say that I have not been successful in creating or inventing a
money tree.

However, I have made certain progress, and before I move forward I would
like to know the following:

1) Do you receive Social Security disability?

2) Do you receive disability related benefit from your state?

If you are not in United States of America, please feel free to forward any

Hi all --

I wanted you to be the first I shared this news with -- instead of trying to
paraphrase, let me just give you a few paragraphs of detail.

Rob Summers, a 25-year-old Portland, Oregon man, who was paralyzed below his
chest with a C7/T1 injury as a result of a car accident in 2006, is standing
and stepping with assistance, and voluntarily moving his legs for the first
tim e since his injury.

In this study, continual direct epidural electrical stimulation to the
subject's lower spinal cord mimicks the signals his brain would normally
send to initiate movement. This coupled with intense locomotor training is
responsible for the subject's unprecedented functional recovery.

The subject is able to stand supplying the muscular push himself and can
remain standing, bearing his full weight, for up to four minutes at a time
and up to an hour with periodic assistance. In addition to some functional
recovery, relief from some of the secondary complications of complete spinal
cord injury (for example, loss of bladder and sexual function) could be even
more significant.

Aided by a harness and some therapist assistance, he can make repeated
stepping motions on a treadmill. He can also voluntarily move his toes,
ankles, knees and hips on command.

Read more about the study here - http://bit.ly/iSfKnH

Best wishes to you all

OK, so you remember we were discussing how to manage delegating food prep?
Well, here is a debate I came across -- help me out here people. This is how
I always made my P B J sandwich ~ first you put butter on a slice of
twelve grain bread, next you put peanut butter on top of the butter, then
you put the jelly on top of the peanut butter, then the other slice of bread
on top. OH and of course it is to be cut in half vertically not
horizontally.
This is how my Aid (my sweetheart) thinks it should be done. First, white
bread, then no butter at all, then peanut butter on one slice of bread, then
jelly on the other slice of bread and cut into four's. I don't think so.
What do you guys think? Bobbie

I doubt anybody has an answer to this being it is part of being a
quadriplegic. Anyway I have been a quadriplegic for almost 16 years now.
It seems that every year it is harder to keep warm. I remember the first
year I was hurt I wore shorts and tank tops all summer just to stay cool.
Now after being a quad this long this long I end up wearing sweatpants and a
sweatshirt most of the summer just to stay warm. During the winter I wear
sweatpants, two thermal shirts, a sweatshirt, a knit hat and have a blanket
on me just to stay in the house. that doesn't even keep me warm. Even with
all that and the house being about 73° I still have trouble keeping my
temperature above 95°.
It would be great if somebody on here had a miracle way to help this. I
guess I am wondering if this is a typical quadriplegic problem for it to get
worse every year. If it is it would be interesting to hear how other people
cope with this.

VISIBLE THEATRE
presents
“True Story Project: FAITH”
12 perspectives on Faith spanning race, gender, sexuality and ‘ability’

Supported by the National Endowment of the Arts and the City of New York’s
Department of Cultural Affairs

Following the triumph of last year’s provocative and enormously engaging
True Story Project: SEX, Visible Theatre continues in its mission of
“celebrating alternative perspectives, challenging perceptions and providing
unique insight into the human condition,” by presenting its fourth
autobiographical storytelling work,
“True Story Project: FAITH,” to colleges and organizations through out the
tri-state area beginning in March, 2009. Including both able bodied and
disabled story tellers of profoundly diverse backgrounds, the tour will
culminate in a three-week run at The Parker at Algonquin Theatre in
Manhattan.

Shows followed by a talkback are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at
8pm - May 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23. Saturday, May 16th at 4pm,
there will be a talk on Disability and Faith presented Chicago-based
playwright and NEA Guest Artist Todd Bauer. The Algonquin Theatre is located
at 123 East 24th Street, near Lexington Avenue. Suggested donation of $15
at the door. The theatre capacity is small so reservations are required.
Please call 212-615-3199.

Conceived by Artistic Director, Krista Smith, True Story Project: FAITH
features a diverse ensemble of twelve professional actors, including actors
with disabilities who write and perform their unabashedly honest
autobiographical stories with the central core of faith. Much more than a
consideration of spirituality and religion alone, the actors weigh issues of
faith and intimacy, faith and family and faith and the body. Ensemble
members include: Gregg Mozgala, David Wagner, Joe Sims, Elizabeth Treston.
Dacyl Acevedo, Angela DeMatteo, Julia O’Brien, Timothy Wang, Lisa
Wartenberg, Todd Bauer, and Xian Horn. Directed by Krista Smith and Julia

College, Queensborough College, Manhattan College, Chashama, HERE Arts
Center, Blue Heron Theatre, Abingdon Theatre and at City Hall to commemorate
the Americans with Disabilities Act. True Story Project: Faith will tour to
venues in all five boroughs and beyond, culminating in a three week run at

There are some purist and naturalist who feel that a person should have a
bowel movement after every dinner or 3 times a day. Consider your habits
before you became a C6. Your waste is toxic and you should have a bowel
movement, once a day or every other day. I realize that you may need help

I found this on the USDL website. I think this is an blatant example of
accommodation run amuck. What do you guys think.

An engineer who uses a wheelchair held a job in a manufacturing company
that required employees to move throughout a campus facility inspecting
various aspects of the buildings, typically using the ability to climb,
scoot, and crawl into small spaces. The engineers worked in teams. One
member of the team would videotape the areas that this worker could not
access. The engineer then used the videotape to gather pertinent information
for the task.

.

Let me be more specific in my haste and response to the new students that
have recently subscribed to the quadriplegic list. As a former student in
the science educational field and supervisor I felt that it was somewhat
patronizing that many of us who have been paralyzed for numerous years
needed advice from students when I felt it was we who would be of more
assistance to them. Also, because of my supervisory experience students
usually require permission from a source if we are being part of the
classroom assignment. I just felt it odd that two students from the same
class would appear on the list.

I welcome others to this forum as it is not my position to ban anyone from
any forum. I hope this puts an end to any questions or concerns.

AD is autonomic dysreflexia. Most quads experience this type of a nerve
disorder from time to time. Your body generates enough pain that it creates
and electrical pulse that somehoe sends signals into the autonomiuc nervous
system where it wreaks havoc on pulse rate, blood pressure, hormone
production. Organ failure may occur. Stroike and heart attack can also
happen. It is a serious problem. So, what does everyone else take when AD
begins.

I had the same choice back in the 80's when baclophen was being touted as
the end all be all of controlling spasms. I was taking about 30-40 mg of
valium a day and pretty addicted. (had been on Valium for 13years). Just to
start the change meant detoxing from one drug to another. I find that
detoxing involves AD, or at least a very good chance of it. I mean the kind
where you can't talk anymore and a 20 hour nap. I gave up after one episode.
Going to the ER once is not my idea of a sucessful attempt.
I had a friend that went for baclophen. He was a C-4 and felt valium was old
fashioned. A year later hes having to take a lot of baclophen to control
spasms. Easy cure, go to Texas and get a baclophen pump installed. 1st one
malfunctioned and couldn't refill after a month.
Rush back to Texas. Second pump surgery screws up and he gets a staph
infection. He died on a plane between Huston and Cincinnati while the pilot
was turning the plane around. In all sincerety, I don't believe most doctors
or nurses have a real understanding of AD
I know that I can pop six to eight Valiums to get AD into control if need
be. I had an anti-seizure drug but it didn't work as well or as fast as
simply taking a blood pressure pill and 2 Valiums. If it doesn't work for
you then, by all means, search for a drug that will work.
What do folks on here take for their AD?
I find that it is easy to tell when I need a valium and it has the side
effect of making me far less suicidal or depressed.

I would like to know who uses baclofen and the side effects you experience;
like hypotension (which I already suffer from), or any side effects. I took
this drug right after my accident in '88, but that was 20 yrs. ago and my

Below is a news link; a doctor claims it worked for his addiction to
alcohol, it got me thinking of changing my spasm medicine. I do not suffer
from alcohol addiction; but I take diazapam for spasms, and was going to
talk to my doc about baclofen for the spasms. I was just recently diagnosed
with inherited Cardiomyopathy; so I was wondering about any cardio side
effects as well, which I will find out when I have another echo cardiogram
next week.

I have a problem and I'm hoping somebody on the list can help me with. I
have had problems with pressure sores since my injury 13 years ago. They
never get really bad, mostly just to the blister stage but they are
constant. The area where I get the sores all the time is always purple, I
have asked doctors, nurses and people in the support groups that I attend an
apparently I am the only one with a purple butt. Until recently I could lay
on my side for a couple of days and they would go way. It seems like now
whenever I lay on my side all I do is sweat. The more I sweat the more I
want to cover myself up and the more I cover myself up the more I sweat. If
I have somebody put the warm blow dryer on me it helps but only until they
stop. I would love to hear what kind of mattress and what you guys do or
don't do to prevent constant pressure sores? I have an SP tube so that also
hinders lying on my side because my knee is always bent and it looks like
it's pushing the tube.

and they were ignoring them even though they were classic symptoms of a DVT!
Hitherto ... I was not familiar with clots of any type so I was in the dark.
It was the Internet that saved my life essentially.

With what I described... they should have wanted to at the very least
eliminate the possibility of a clot since I just had two surgeries with that
doctor and that is a primary thing to worry about after surgery. But
noo... I thought it was probably just swelling and I should wear some of
those tight hose. QUACK, QUACK

I went around for about a month with my left lower leg very swollen and very
hard. I finally read an article on the net (I was very new to the Internet
back then and only knew how to look things up) and one doctor in Washington
state had an article about spinal cord injuries and folks with MS. A
sentence said If one leg is significantly larger than the other... it could
indicate a clot. All I knew was that a clot was not good but I had no
idea that I had a DVT whereby all I had to do was move a certain way to have
it move directly to my lungs to kill me.

The very next morning I called my primary care physician and I went to see
him. He looked at it and said I don't know... I don't think it could be a
clot but I will send you over to the hospital to have an ultrasound done.
Needless to say... I never left the hospital because it was a lengthy clot
and I was in immediate danger.

I am 49 years old. I didn't start bleeding until 14 months after my injury.
And then it came back. It was awful. My husband had to deal with the mess
and also my caregivers. My OB/GYN decided to put me on Depo-Provera. I get
the shot every three months, and I don't have any periods at all. It has
been the best thing I could have ever done! Ask your doctor about it. It's
worked great for me.

I am 42 years old, and after my accident in December of 2000, I didn't have
my period for seven months or so. Of course, when I would mention this to
my husband back then, he would say let's not talk about it. Maybe it will
never come back. Well, shortly after that it did come back. Now, I wish it
would go away. Couple of things. One is that I have a 33-year-old
caregiver, who had to have a total hysterectomy due to cancer. She is
cancer free and we are always joking about her not having a period anymore
and how I wish I didn't. Also, I never thought my husband would be putting
in a tampon for me, much less showing a caregiver how to do it. I use a
tampon during the bowel and shower program. Thank God we have a good sense
of humor. I have to wonder if I'm looking forward to menopause. As I'm
normally cold, and I wonder how the hot flashes are, besides the lack of
bleeding. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Take care --

Okay, enough already! I know we all have had bad experiences with hospitals,
but you're all starting to sound like they are death camps. There are many
of us that don't have a close relative to stay with us in a hospital -
myself being one. And frankly, you are scaring the shit out of me.

Being in the hospital for many people is not a pleasant experience but you
have to do what you have to do. I always have a typed list of: my medical
history, surgical history, current meds regimen, and prescriptions I am
allergic to and those I'm not allergic to. This is given to them upon
registration. So I feel at least they are aware of the basics.

Please give those of us - and I can't be the only one - who will be entering
the fray alone some hope, encouragement and peace of mind.

I have ALWAYS had a family member (mostly my significant other or my
husband) present during any hospital procedure or stay. Because they simply
do not have a clue about spinal cord injuries. In fact, it's pretty scary
how much they don't have a clue about anything!

A very high percentage of folks die in hospitals because of negligence or
malpractice that gets swept under the carpet. They explain it away somehow
and there is nothing one can do after the damage is done especially if it is
death.

Anytime a quad gets any procedure done at the hospital I think it is wise to
have someone there as your backup. Someone that knows your disability and

spinal injuries and have a deaf ear when you explain anything. When your

really is irritating when you have somebody reboot your computer and you
may have to wait for it to finish rebooting, before they can turn on the
microphone. I haven't checked to come on. Has anybody else had this
problem. It also seems like Dragon 9 will close more than Dragon 8..
it also brings up the Dragon window which you have to click close when I say
reboot Dragon using KnowBrainer, you cannot click on close, before Dragon is
ready and the microphone is on. I have re-loaded the Dragon program to see

Hey everybody-

This applies to all of us. These guys are great! I've been working with
them for several years with Dragon Dictate, Dragon NaturallySpeaking version
9, and my environmental control unit.

Jon and Tim know what they're doing, and are VERY helpful. I'm so happy
that they decided to open a business of their own specializing in voice
recognition. They have always helped me out, and still do, whenever I have
an issue. They helped me with my last one.

They are very polite, respectful, knowledgeable, patient, helpful, and are
determined to work with you and whatever voice recognition needs or issues
you have. Including purchasing, installing, training, and customer service.

From my own experience with them, if there's something going on and you have
no idea why, they'll do everything they can to figure it out and fix it.
They understand how people like us need voice-recognition, and needed to be
working especially.

I've worked with different guys who specialize in voice recognition, and
none of them were as good or as genuine as Jon and Tim are. They really
want your voice recognition things to work properly.

Next time you need to take your voice recognition business somewhere, I
highly, highly, highly recommend taking it to them. Whether you are
disabled or not, you won't regret it!

Here's their website address: Http://thespeechgurus.com

Taking a shower and dressing took me 2 hours and I have spent over 3 hours

I am so frustrated and angry. Sick and tired of crying to.

Speaking of things legal. I was asked by the city 'fathers' to take down
my website ( old Glendale Commission on
http://ocgrands.com/gcopd/index-old.html Persons With Disabilities (GCOPD)
) where I had pictures of local voting places and described the shortfalls
in regards to handicapped accessibility that we the mayor's commission on
persons with disabilities were chartered to inspect. They claimed it was
'improper' to put city oriented research and info on a private website and
could possibly lead to legal implications. When my district representative
called, she wondered why we were doing that activity anyway. Talk about the
left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing then cloaking it all
in legaleeze mumbo jumbo.

Extreme home makeovers have products they want to sell. Disability products
are such a small part of the remodeling market, I'd rather bet on getting

The first handicapped accesible section 8 apartments I worked on are now
filthy slums where the term disability was twisted to mean alcoholic and
drug addict. On my last visit there were no machines in the laundry room.
they had been sold by a tennant that was mentally ill. The building security
system no longer existed and the entire first floor was being run by a pimp.
The city claimed they spent 20g a year on security. You guessed it, the pimp
got 20g a year. The city has since sold it to a judge. (the uncle of the
pimp)

The second building I worked on was to be run by local presbytery under
Bush's plan to let charities take over things the gov't sucks at. That is
suspended untill the federal gov't finds money it isn't sending to Iraq.
Sure feel bad for the crippled soldiers coming back.

I'm trying to get the city interested in a building strictly for spinal cord

You really do need a shower chair, but I found these bathrooms need a copper
subfloor with a special tile that drains to a universal drain in the
bathroom. The tile has microgrooves to direct the water to the drain and
theres very little tilt. The copper subfloor is needed because anything you
do may fail in one or more places and the copper can also be designed to
drain. I like putting a heated cement subfloor below the copper. Along with
a vent fan the bathroom needs a small fan stirring the air for about 10
minutes after you leave it. It should be set to turn on every 12 hours if
its not used. This helps stop mold and mildew from forming.

infection and are going to contact my Urologist because only I.V. drugs can
fight it. Since i've had a supra-pubic catheter put in 7 years ago --- this

I.V. drugs once again. It is very depressing, Has anyone else had repeated
serious UTI's such as Psuedamonas??? We are wondering how many times one can
use the I.V. drugs for this before getting resistant to them...I don't
know what options there are..I will ask my Uro Doctor but he seems to not
know a lot on the subject. Thanks, Dan H.

thinking.

The analogy is wasted on me. Several sexual aids and alternatives are
presented to the populous and this includes some brought to SCI people in
educational classes which would have disapproval to many non European. To
many SCI injured folks these aids have given birth to intimacy for many.

Personally or unfortunately sex is not high on my list but unfortunately I
lack intimacy in many forms which I would desire in my life. Viagra has
been an option to me compliments of the VA

In my sexual ed classes I admit in the beginning I guess I was shocked that
we were directed to investigate local sex shops. Items in certain circles
do have applications for many. Why are many of us , an I shocked that our
parents might indulge?

An open mind is a sad mind not to share. A new flag pole might add
attraction to an old building, especially one of stature.

I have a question about tattoos. Are there any of you who have got tattoos
post injury below the level of your injury? I really would like to get

I've heard from some people (2) that they go dysreflexic, others say they

What do you guys think of the whole idea?

A person from wheelchair junkie just posted this on and asked everyone to
get the word out.

My power wheelchair and wheelchair van were both stolen Tuesday night, Aug
7, 2007, from the Springfield area of Western Massachusetts.

We were the victims of an armed home invasion. I had taken my Mom shopping
and come home about 8:00 pm. Sometime that evening, someone cut the screen
door and got in. They stole cash and my van keys that were on the table. We
didn't notice my van was gone until the next day.

The minivan was a 1999 Ford Windstar by VMI. It had hand-controls and a
steering knob. It had the folding ramp in the passenger sliding door.

Also, my power wheelchair was in the van. It was a blue Invacare M91 Pronto.

The police have had no luck so far in finding either the van or the chair. I
don't know if the thief just wanted a ride or if he knew it was a wheelchair
van before he took it. I don't know if he intends to strip it or sell it or
the chair.

If anyone hears anything, I have set up an email at:

[QUAD-L] MN guy on bridge for Wheel

2007-08-06 Thread Elizabeth Treston

 http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/03/bridge.collapse.paraplegic/index.html
Paralyzed man survives 2nd brush with death on collapsing bridge

Quote:
  _

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (CNN) -- Seven years ago, police in North Carolina
covered shooting victim Marcelo Cruz with a tarp, believing he was dead. He
wasn't. Cruz survived the street fight shooting, but was left paralyzed from
the waist down.

The Mexican native rebuilt his life, and at 26, was living in Minneapolis,
driving a specially equipped van so he could get around the city.

That's what he was doing Wednesday when he drove onto the Interstate 35W
bridge just after 6 p.m., only to see the bridge in front of him start to
shake -- and in a few short seconds, tumble down.

Cruz saw 10 or 20 cars in front of him plunge into the water. He applied the
brakes, but on the now-sloping bridge deck, he couldn't stop.

I thought I was going to die, he told CNN.

But he wasn't afraid, he said. He just thought about what he needed to do
and how to do it. How to stop a car if the brakes don't do the job?

Cruz swerved, and plowed his van into the concrete guard rail. It worked --
the van stopped, less than 15 feet from what was now the end of the bridge
before it dropped into the Mississippi River.

Now trapped in his van on the bridge -- unable get out because of the sharp
angle -- Cruz said he heard a woman screaming from below. Then she stopped.

I really felt hopeless because I couldn't do anything, he said.

Finally, two rescue workers saw him and helped him reach safety. About 15
minutes after the bridge collapse, he called his mother, Ignacia Cruz, and
told her to turn on the television. He just wanted her to know he was OK.

Ignacia Cruz spoke to CNN quietly in her native Spanish.

God and the Virgin Mary saved my son, because otherwise he would have
tumbled into the water with all the other cars, she said.

I began to cry and cry, because this was the second time he was saved.

On Thursday, after surviving his second brush with death, Cruz was stoic.

You really have to enjoy every day, he said, because you don't know if
it's your last.

Federal Access Board Proposes Guidelines for Federal Outdoor Developed Areas
(excerpt from Access Board's website)

The Board has released for public comment new accessibility guidelines for
Federal parks and recreation areas. As proposed, the guidelines address
access to new or altered trails, beaches, and picnic and camping areas on
sites managed by the Federal government. Achieving accessibility in outdoor
environments has long been a source of inquiry due to challenges and
constraints posed by terrain, the degree of development, construction
practices and materials, and other factors. In developing these guidelines,
the Board seeks to clarify how, and to what extent, accessibility criteria
can be applied to outdoor developed areas

The guidelines are available for comment until October 18, 2007. A notice
published with the guidelines discusses the provisions, poses questions to
the public on various issues, and includes instructions for providing
comments. Comments can be submitted by email, fax, or mail. In addition, the
Board will hold public

 Life at Large
The Disability Dollar As A Cash Cow

 Jun 25 12:27

 By Mark E. Smith

If you have a problem, throw money at it – at least when it comes to
 disability-related politics.

Here we are on the eve of another blockbuster of a campaign season, racing
toward the nonstop political pandering that is the presidential primaries,
then the big election of '08. But, for those with disabilities, where are
we
in the political power struggle – that is, which candidates are looking
out
for our economic and societal equity, like those looking out for virtually
every other special-interest group, from tobacco companies to transgender
 constituents?

We are nowhere to be found in the special-interest, cash-fed cow that is
modern-day politics. We're still rolling around with picket signs, asking
candidates and elected officials to just do the right thing, when such
political tactics are, well, passé. What we need is our own formal
advocacy,
an AARP or NRA, that serves as our collective body, a political machine
rolling through Capitol Hill, contributing cash, opening doors, shaking
hands, and getting our agenda on the table. If expensive cigars and
campaign
contributions serve most other special-interests groups, then that's what
we
 should do, too

But, we're not in the game – namely because we're not willing, as a group,
to put our campaign contributions where our complaints are. We don't run
with the PAC, and we're not willing to flex our monetary muscle. And I
don't
get it. In 2008, clout over who's elected, who's defeated, and which
legislation is supported will be written on checks during 2007. So why
 aren't we writing checks?

Some will say that we're among the poorest of minority groups, with the
highest unemployment rate, that we are at an economic disadvantage in the
 political process.

But aren't we also among the largest minority groups, 46-million strong,
including 12.6-million of us with severe disabilities? Even my poor math
proves that if 200,000 of us – a fraction of those with disabilities –
kick
 in $10 each, that's $2-million toward a focused special-interest group.
Trust me, at a $5,000 contribution per candidate and official – which will
typically get you access and an ear in some capacity – $2-million would go
a
long way toward the 2008 disability agenda and beyond.

Now, you're probably thinking that all this sounds fine and dandy, but
who's
going to organize this disability political powerhouse that's going to
spread goodwill and cash throughout Washington for those with
disabilities?

I say we start by enlisting the help of – and sending our support to –
those
 carrying the picket signs.

I encourage new disabled individuals I meet to keep their head up and make

Gatorade or potato chips but don't go nuts.

She left me a phone message so when I got home at 8:30 tonight I called he
and left her this fowling message: Hi Jinifer, I just wanted to let you
know that I got an extra large jug of Gatorade, drank about half of it then
I ate a salt bagel and a half of a bag of potato chips. I'm just doing what

urinary stones are probably in your bladder and have either passed through
your kidney or formed in your bladder. they use a laser to break them apart
then remove what they can and you will pass the smaller pieces when you
catheterize. i had no pain or down time following the procedure. they will
insert a tube through your urethra into the bladder and pass the instruments
through the tube. it sounds awful but the tube isn't much bigger than a

RE: [QUAD-L] Dylan's seizures

2007-03-25 Thread Elizabeth Treston
A head trauma or just a spinal cord trauma?

I've ever had a seizure or have heard of a chemical build-up.

My neurologist told me that it is a result of having a trauma, after I had
my first couple seizures. I started my medication after testing and have
never had a seizure since. I take 50 mg Tegratol twice a day. What do
others take? I started medication about two years ago after my few seizures.

First off Lucinda I’m sorry you have this to deal with on top of everything
else.

Second, what a jerk to put this on you 5 days after your accident and
actions tell me a lot about his character.

The good thing is you have a healthy 16 yr old son, I have a 15 yr old son
myself so I understand.

I really think asking your son where he wants to live would be the best
thing to do first but I think having a trusting 3rd party ask him would be
best

I had custody of my son before my accident and after 2 ½ yrs of recovery and
nursing homes he’s back and has been here with me 5 yrs now but there was no
fighting involved.

The fact that he might have to help a little is not an issue in my book, if
anything it’s good for him and would probably be more than glad to lend a
hand if asked at all, I try not to ask for anything and give him as much
freedom as any 15yr old has.

My son has a very normal life there’s baseball, football, Xbox, girls, girls
and did I mention girls lol!

You should be able to find a lawyer to do this free and I’d check with non
profits that deal with disabled first because most of them either have a
lawyer on retention or on the board of directors and would be glad to take
this case.

Best of Luck,

Mark

Subject: [QUAD-L] Off-topic -- not sure what to do

Hey everybody,
I am in a bit of a pickle and I'm not sure how to handle the situation.
Approximately 5 days after I was in my accident, my son's father filed for
custody. The only thing I can remember is laying there, with a halo on, in
a semi-drug-induced coma, thinking I didn't want my son to become a ward of
the state. So of course I allowed my power of attorney to sign over papers.
Now a little over a year and a half later I am in my own place and he is
refusing to let my son stay here anymore than every other weekend citing
that the parental roles are now reversed. My ex says that I should be
caring for and supporting our son but if he is at home with me he would be
caring for and supporting me due to my situation (can I remind you my son is
16). He had been getting up on his own for school since he was in 7th grade
and there is a bus stop three blocks away. He is not involved in or
expected to be involved in my cares when he is with me, I have PCA's for
that. My ex also mentioned that he does not want another disruption to our
sons routine (not that he didn't have to get used to one when I got in my
accident). Prior to my accident my son and I were joined at the hip and has
mentioned that he would like to stay here more than every other weekend.
Being dependent on SSDI there's not a lot of money for an attorney. Oh, and
did I mention my ex and I were in the middle of a child support battle when
I got in my accident? He was hoping to get his payments reduced. Help,
I've called legal aid and they don't even have room to put my name on a
waiting list. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you and I apologize for the lengthy post.

Journey well through life,

Lucinda

[QUAD-L] Medicare Legislation

2007-03-16 Thread Elizabeth Treston

ATAP has received a request from the ITEM Coalition FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION.
Congressmen Jim Langevin (D-RI) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN) are preparing to
introduce the Medicare Independent Living Act . This bill will eliminate
the Medicare restriction for in the home use that pertains to individuals
with long term mobility needs.

As many of you are aware, this is an outdated restriction on the coverage
of mobility devices. In essence, if a person who has mobility problems can
move around their home without a mobility device, but requires the device to
go to work, school, or anywhere outside the home, this person is not
eligible for a mobility device through Medicare.

In preparation for the introduction of this bill in a few weeks, the
Congressmen have circulated a letter to their colleagues requesting
cosponsorship of the measure. The ITEM Coalition is requesting that you
contact your Representative toll-free using the Capitol switchboard
(1.877.224.0041) and ask he/she to become an original cosponsor of the
Medicare Independent Living Act, a bipartisan piece of legislation designed
to remove Medicare's unfair restriction on in the home usage for mobility
devices.

There have been many attempts at removing this restriction in the last
several years. To date none have been successful. You will recall the most
recent attempt last summer when CMS issued new regulations regarding the
procurement and reimbursement of mobility devices. Despite numerous comments
from individuals and organizations around the country recommending this
elimination, CMS chose to take no action in this matter and left the
restriction intact.

If you have any further questions regarding this matter, please contact the
ITEM Coalition directly at 202.349.4260. Thanks.

Hey Eric,

I have thought about that [no anesthesia] 'before' in
my mind and actually mentioned it to my husband outwardly and verbally
today. I don't know why I forgot to ask the urologist.

I do not have any feeling on the outside below the
chest either but whenever there is any type of manipulation [especially
trauma to the bladder for what has to be done with theseLARGE
stones in there] I would be jumpingand spasming right off of
the table. Not to mention sending my autonomic nervous system
through the roof! I imagine that the anesthesia, along with the
anesthesiologist, controls all of this.

I did ask the doctor how much they load you up on
antibiotics during and after the surgery. She said that they
definitely will give me IV antibiotics during the procedure. And
then afterward I would be on a full dose of antibiotics orally for about
a week. And then finally she would cut down the dose andthen
wean off of them completely.

I still do want to get an answer from the doctor
directly, however, to see why they want you under
anesthesia. Because in my situation [or anyone else like me] it
would seem that the body would react convulsively even
under the anesthesia. But I don't know so I will ask. I am
sure that I will get a textbook answer but I will try.

Lori

OH WELL - SURGERY for BIG BLADDER STONES
Personally, I would ask to have the procedure
without anesthesia. I'm unable to feel below injury level so
anesthesia isn't necessary. Just start an IV so medications to
control AD can be administered. Eric Lori
Michaelson wrote:

After Nikki told me that all they did was use an
epidural on her to remove her bladder stones I was hoping I could
choose the same route. Unfortunately not.

  The urologist called me this
morning. She told me that she spoke to the chief
anesthesiologist about whether or not he would do a
spinal/epidural on me. He said no because the anesthesia
  medicineCOULD/WOULD gostraight UPWARDinto the
spine and it could easily SWOOSH upwards into my spine via
  spinal fluidand into my shunt.

Since the anesthesia medicine is obviously a
paralyzing medicine ... it paralyzes all muscles including lung
muscles. And my shunt goes into my lung cavity. I
really don't want to go all the way under anesthesia but it looks
like that is what I am going to have to do.

She said that she would have her personal
scheduler call me within a week or so to get it
  scheduled.

Again, I am not so much worried about the
procedure itself but the after effects that will trigger
autonomic dysreflexia for a long time post procedure.
