W I understand your concern. It's the Internet and you never can tell. For all we know everyone on this list is a wheelchair pretender. Yes, like I said, I will gain money for school because of my own hard work and the information from voluntary participants. Although in my opinion helping others, again voluntarily, is a rewarded all in itself, but to each his own. I know your comments are respected on this list because I have been a member pretty much since my accident in 2000 and know you are almost always the first to respond. You have personally commented on several things that have helped me out. ? In my experience, I've never had people not want to talk to me (and yes the wheelchair is many times the conversation starter).? In fact I've seen more AB's ostracized than crips. People tend to avoid conversing with other people who look sad or?angry, regardless of whether they are AB or wheelchair bound. I would avoid talking with someone if they looked pissy and depressed all the time.? I was depressed and angry at the world for 3 yrs after my accident and trust me whinnying about shit gets you nowhere.? And even if it did get me somewhere, that's not a respectable way to get things done.? I like being the guy in the wheelchair because it's me!? Barabra I had an indewlling for 4 yrs then I started having pain. I went to the supra and I love it. I haven't really had an incontenence problem. It could be the number of years you've had the indewlling in that has stretched your urethra. Dana I'm not saying that a person who can't take care of a dog's needs shouldn't get a dog.? I know when I first got my dog I couldn't put on her vest, leash, feed/water her, or really walk her (my home is surrounded by grass and at the time all I had was a manual chair). But I've learned ways of doing things so that I can be autonomous with my pup.? Taking care of the dog is part of the bonding process as well. I have had my Golden Service dog for about 7 yrs now.? Recently I've noticed her having trouble swallowing.? I look up on the internet about it and found that Golden's can inherit Dysphagia.? I allow people to pet her in two places: (1) my dorm room [helps draw the ladies in], and (2) when we're sitting outside in the courtyard and she's rollin' in the grass. After an extended vacation for her while I was hospitalized, she just forgot about pooping only in that store. I took this as communication and listened to her. See your local animal shelter on how to certify if interested with $25.00 I was right that you need to remember she is a working dog which means no contact with so many people. Plus side is you are never alone. This gets so old in short time but if a service dog is what you want, then you must deny others that touch folks find irresistible. Most people ask and some think you are there for them. Best is to say the dog is working and it is not a good idea to interact at this time. You have a good breed on one side. The down side is seems no one can resist letting you go by. On the other side the dog needs socializing on your terms. There is much to be said about clicker training. Consistency and exclusiveness are primary. A dog only needs to develop as far as you take it, or should I say will only. In December of 2000, the top part of a tree broke off and fell on our minivan while we were driving about 35 or 40 miles an hour on a back road. Wrong place at the wrong time. My husband and I both broke our necks and had surgery to get them fused. There was more damage to my side of the van, which left me a quadriplegic. My husband fortunately did not have any permanent damage. I have movement of my arms, but no finger movement. We are in the midst of training our three-month old AKC yellow lab, which we got when she was seven weeks old. My husband is doing a great job with her. She was the youngest and most mellowest of the whole litter and should be around 60 pounds or so full-grown. Everyone that knows Labs says that she is not a lab because she is so mellow. She is potty trained and sleeps in a kennel during the night. Has anyone out there trained their dogs to do things for them? I still need to find a way to be able to give her treats. Any suggestions? Hey guys There's a new drug identified as AV650 that is an antispasmodic drug.? Supposedly, it doesn't have the sedating effect?like baclofen and tizanadine.? It's really a pain in the ass--with baclofen when my spasms are gone I just wanna sleep, but once the meds wear off I'm awake and as spastic as before.? A circle can be so cruel.? They aren't doing trials in my state or I would do it.? The only thing is you have to get off of all your spasm meds and still you might wind up with the placebo and not the drug.? Lori Yea this is my first Permobil. This is only my second chair--my first was a Quickie P-222. Back pain is part of the reason I got the Permobil. I'm very active always doing a lot of transfers, moving my body all the time, and riding my handcycle (my body gets exausted). So when I found a chair that was smooth, low, could recline, and was sexy I jumped all over it. Don't get me wrong I tested many other power chairs in a rehab setting before I settled on this one. Even the c-350's big brother the Permobil Street (too tall). In the end,the c-350 had everything I wanted and needed in a small package. When I'm do for a battery change my vendor comes to my residence, not the other way around. My late grandmother put in her obituary that she would like people to donate money to me for college. It now totals $500 which would be a great start to the library. I would like to fill the library with information about all kinds of disabilities and keep the library in the students with disabilities office. It will be dedicated to my grandmother and the organization i started here at Lamar (SWAA - students with alternative abilities). I've worn a legbag for about 3yrs now and I find that it shifts anytime I move in my chair,?transfer, and/or try to get close to?a woman on a couch.? It just seems to me that if?one's bladder can hold an average amount urine and they have the hand function to drain it that it would be best for their renal function to just use a valve instead of a bag.? I'm going to talk with my urologist about it.? Once the bladder shrinks is it possible to stretch it back out? I just passed my driver's test with flying colors!? Now it's time to start van shopping.? I'm thinking about getting a Chevy Uplander and I'll be driving from the drivers seat as opposed to my wheelchair. I keep a leg bag connected to my catheter day and night.? When I'm in bed I don't leave it attached to my leg, I just lay it on the bed next to me.? I've done this for several years now and haven't really had a problem.? I used to have trouble with bags slipping off the catheter but since I started using Mentor's Alpine LegBag I haven't had any more problems.? I change my bag once a month and my catheter every six weeks.? The key to not getting infections with an indwelling is to drink lots of water.? Keeping your system flushed is essential.? I have never in my 7yrs of quad life heard of flushing the bladder with vinegar or any other type of fluid.? I know it's hard to drink when you're not thirsty, but it's important to have a high intake of water...water...water.? (Not soda--caffeine takes calcium out of your body making your urine cloudy and increasing your risk of osteoporosis)? I drink about 7 or 8 700ml bottles of water a day.? I personally called the doctors of record about 2 patients that were showing signs of fatal reactions to macrodantin. (I'm amazed nurses are so afraid of doctors that they won't do such things.) Maybe its in the hippa rules not do anything to save Med/Med patients. So, here is a new trick to try if you have an SP catheter. Attach a small leg bag to your catheter and leave it there. Do Not disconect it. When transferring bed bags and other leg bags, simply attach them to the drain side of the permanent leg bag. Goal: Adding an extra barrier to germs and chemicals and reducing infections. ? My big question is, why do you flush your bladders? Don't you change your catheter once a month? Even when folks say they use sterile techniques with replacement of catheters, there are new bacteria introduced. I have heard that the pump has helped a lot of people but me personally i had a bunch of problems with it. the skin over the pump was very painful to the touch. my spasms kept getting worse the more they raised the dosage. the doctor found bacteria in the baclofen fluid so i told them to remove the pump. after the surgery to remove my pump i went home for about an hour when my mom noticed a puddle of clear liquid on the ground under my chair. IT WAS SPINAL FLUID. so i went to the emergency room had my back double stichted and glued then i went home again. more fluid leaked out and i ended up staying in the hospital for 3 days on my back. all of this went on in a 1 1/2 yr. period. oh yea not to mention the other 5 surgeries i had to test the pump to find out why it wasn't working. luke

hey guys i'm having some trouble getting financial aid for school. i have recieved $2025 PELL Grant but it doesn't quite cover the tuition and fees. i still need another $3000 to pay the dorm fee, food ticket, and books. my only income is social security. some people have told me that i shouldn't have any trouble getting it all paid for. W I started doing what I call yardart. You ride your power chair in a repedative path in your yard until you kill the grass in a desired shape. It takes a long time and don't do it after a rain all it does is rut up the path. I've only done a bulls eye, but the grass has grown back up now. One major task that can affect a wheelchair users body, specifically the shoulders, is propelling a manual wheelchair. Many good intentioned professionals--including doctors, physical therapists, wheelchair salesmen, and nurses--often advise wheelchair users incorrectly by suggesting that they push a manual wheelchair to build strength when in reality it could cause a severe shoulder (or other?) injury.

hey all i survived rita! but i think the heats about to kill me. i get my brother to toss me in the lake (filled with cold rainwater) twice a day. the only electricity we have is a small generator that we use to power the fridge, a few fans, and the computer (as long as we have gas). my mom is cooking with a propane grill for now. i'm sure i have enough supplies and pills to get me through a month or so (thats how long i heard it was going to be until we get power). i've been hearing of looting going on around my area. i heard on the radio that the eye passed 20 miles east of us; in jasper, texas. during the storm one tree fell on my room and across the hood of my van. in all we had about 12 trees fall in our yard alone (tall pine trees). there were so many trees we couldn't even see out the front door but my brother started the day after, along with some help, and now most of the front yard is clean. through all this i feel pretty damn good, though. good day to all! Spinal Cord Injury - InfoSheet #16Level - ConsumerDate: December, 2001 What is Spastic Hypertonia? Spastic Hypertonia (SH) is a term that doctors are now using to offer a more complete description of spasticity and various conditions of extreme muscle tension. Spastic Hypertonia refers to uncontrollable “jerking” movement (muscle spasms), stiffening or straightening out of muscles (rigidities), shock-like contractions of all or part of a muscle or group of muscles (myoclonus), and abnormal tone in the muscles (dystonia). Understanding Sensation & Reflex When people touch something hot, their first reaction to the sensation of heat is to quickly jerk away from the heat. This is an example of a reflex reaction to touch or pain. The body reacts to signals that are sent through nerves from the area of sensation to the various reflex centers of the body. The reflex center in the brain works best at identifying sensations and sending signals back through nerves in the spinal cord to tell your body how to react. Other reflex centers are located at different levels of the spinal cord, but these reflex centers are not as accurate as the brain in identifying sensations and telling the body how to react to those sensations. The body reacts best when all of the body’s reflex centers are working together to identify sensations and tell the body how to react. After a Spinal Cord Injury Spastic Hypertonia does not occur immediately after spinal cord injury. When individuals are first injured, their muscles are weak and flexible because their body’s reflexes are absent below the level of injury. This condition is known as “spinal shock,” which can last for a few weeks or several months. Once the spinal shock is over, reflex activity returns. However, the normal flow of nerve signals below the level of injury is interrupted. Those signals may not reach the reflex center of the brain. If all of the body’s reflex centers cannot work together to moderate the body’s response to those signals, the reflex centers of the spinal cord attempt to moderate the body’s response. Because the spinal cord is not as efficient as the brain, the signals that are sent back to the site of the sensation are often over exaggerated. This is an over active muscle response and now referred to by doctors as Spastic Hypertonia. Most individuals with SCI experience Spastic Hypertonia in some form, but they do not necessarily experience SH all of the time. Persons with tetraplegia and persons with incomplete injuries are more likely than persons with paraplegia and persons with complete injuries to experience SH. It is most common for individuals with SCI to experience muscle spasms that bend the elbow (flexor) or extend the leg (extensor). These spasms usually occur as a result of an automatic response to painful sensations. Many individuals who are newly injured often mistake their first movements caused by SH as a return in motor movement. Effects of Spastic Hypertonia Many individuals with SCI take advantage of their muscle spasms to help them perform activities of everyday living. For example, some individuals learn to trigger spasms in their hands and fingers to help pick up light items such as a pencil or magazine. Some people may learn to use their spasms to help empty their bladder, do pressure reliefs, transfer, dress, and even stand or walk. It is normal for individuals who are newly injured to experience changes in their muscle tone and central nervous system soon after injury. However, a change in your spasms after your initial injury can act as a warning sign that there is a problem in areas where you may have no feeling. If you do not normally have SH and start to experience muscle spasms or if your spasms get worse or even decrease, you should talk to your doctor. Any type of change can be a warning sign for problems such as a pressure sore, urinary tract infection, ingrown toenail, tight clothing or constipation. You may have a cyst on your spinal cord, a tumor, Guillain-Barre syndrome, transverse myelitis or a spinal cord stroke. Possible Advantages of Spastic Hypertonia Maintain muscle tone and mass. Reduce bone loss and decrease the risk for osteoporosis. Increase metabolic requirements such as promoting blood circulation and improving breathing. Better perform daily self-care routines such as assisting in pressure reliefs to prevent pressure sores and emptying reflex bladder and bowel. Better perform daily functions such as picking up items, transferring or walking with braces. Warn when there is a problem in areas where the body has no feeling. Possible Disadvantages of Spastic Hypertonia Limit range of motion. Cause pain due to stress put on joints and muscles. Interfere with daily functions such driving, walking with braces, and other activities. Cause unwanted bladder or bowel release. Interfere with other activities

Gabe's Mom, i know exactly what he is going through. i had the same problem for a number of years. serious pain (in my hips, back, tailbone), dysreflexia, horrible spasms. i really thought i was going to die and everyone that came around me just felt bad because no one could help. i was always taking pain pills. i also tried the baclofen pump, with poor results and numerous hospital stays trying to find out why it wasn't doing what it is supposed to do. i only had the pump for a couple of years and i had to have a lot of surgeries. (die studies, re-gluing, pump changing) i also found the pump area would hurt to the touch. after i had the pump removed spinal fluid kept leaking out of my back through the stitches for about a week. what level is your son? how long has it been since his accident? is he incomplete or complete? what kind of wheelchair does he have? does it tilt? What kind of cushion? does he have a pressure sore? answer these questions and I'll see if i can come up with some ideas. i rarely have pain anymore but i still get dysreflexia sometimes and i've found that if i drink plenty of water, more than what i'm thirsty for sometimes, that i don't get dysreflexia as much. luke c-5/6 incomplete, 5yrs post, got hurt when i was 17 riding a dirtbike In a message dated 8/16/2005 9:00:10 PM Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I have posted several times about Gabe, my son and a problem that he is having with autonomic dysreflexia (AD) and pain. The urologist says he has two kidney stones. One in each kidney. She thinks they are to small to cause the problem, but says it’s possible. Neurosurgeon says his shunts are ok and he does not think anything in the spine could cause this. The abdominal ct shows a small gall stone in the neck of the gall bladder. The surgeon doubts it’s the cause. So I started thinking about when was the last time Gabe had pain like this. It was before he got his baclofen pump and the central cord pain, skin pain and spasms about killed him. He got a new pump last summer and almost died from an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. So he went two months last summer without his pump when he was in the hospital. He was drugged on morphine for most of the time. He was too ill from the allergic reaction to replace the pump. So his baclofen pump dose now is a lot lower then it was before last summer. So the question is…. could the pain that is going on now be central cord pain and the AD be a response to the central cord pain. I’ve made an apt for him to see his rehab doc. Until then I’m going to give him oral baclofen everyday as an experiment. What do you guys think? I’m asking you guys because Gabe can’t tell me everything that’s going on. it took me awhile to learn to transfer to the stander. it's a little tricky. you bend the hanger like this. put the end of the hanger that has the red box around it through the button hole, then put the button in the very tip of the part of the hanger w/ the red box around it. pull the hanger and the button back through the hole. like thredding a needle. luke He has the stander and the upper tone already. Just got the upper tone off of EBay this summer. Made quite a buy on it too but getting here was a bit expensive. Stander is difficult to use because he needs assistance. I am going to forward your email to him. I know he will value your experience and advice. He has a manual and a power chair. He only uses the sliding board when someone else is helping him but not when he does independent transfers. He is really just learning to transfer himself regularly. He is starting to pass on attendants getting him into bed at night. How do you use the coat hanger? I really appreciate your feedback and guidance. Karen
