Yes this problem does seem router firmware related, but it is definitely
also SB radio related. One of my radios (surprisingly not both!) started
suffering from this problem after upgrading the firmware on my router. I
can't really blame the router firmware though, as ~every~ other wireless
device in the house has had no problem. I have over 20 wifi devices in
my house, several of them slim devices or logitech, and only the red
radio gets a red wifi icon. :-(

I have no idea what the Root Cause of all these WiFi issues is, but...

I have 3 SBR's, all WiFi, and 2 of them work ANYWHERE in my condo,
without issue. The latest SBR has already had the Red Icon issue, and
I'm afraid it will return.

Keep in mind, I have over 12 Wifi devices in my home and NONE of them
ever complain. For this reason alone, the SBR is at least a very
temperamental device. Not sure if it's Firmeware, or maybe they just
chose a poor Wifi radio for the SBR.

Either way, this is 2012, and Just replace your Router, or Jump
through all these hoops is not an acceptable answer to this kind of
issue.

Long ago (2005?) I purchased a Roku music player, and it got sent back
for this same type Lost connection of issue.

That said, the latest version of LMS is amazing, and I no longer have

Can we actually always assume it is the firmware , there are these kind
of complaints every fw upgrade or server upgrade ? I do run the beta fw
and installed almost every one the beta fw to and never had these kind
of problems .
If I get wifi problems I've found the problems elsewhere in my wifi

I don't think they mess with the wlan part of fw very often ? for
reference does anyone knows if or when there have been wlan related
changes in the fw ?

agree. I have two radios (one always wifi, one sometimes wifi) and
through several versions of firmware/LMS nothing has changed regarding
my WIFI performance. I run both these RADIOS synched to another player
and all works well (streaming internet radio several hours a day and/or
streaming my own FLAC files).

As always, use something like inSSIDer or netstumbler to look at local
WIFI channels being used and choose the channel with lowest number of
other users, etc. Best to use 1, 6, or 11 if possible. Also do NOT
hide your SSID (as this is not security and can cause issues with SB
players). I also use a fixed IP (true fixed, not reserved) on all my SB
stuff, but I don't think this is necessary

As Toby10 says, #1, it is worthless from a security point of view, and
#2, in some cases it CAN cause problems with a SB player. Doesn't always
cause problems, but given that it provides zero security, why even have
the potential problem.

p.s., hide your SSID, then run a free program such as inSSIDer or
netstumbler or vistumbler, and you'll see why it is worthless to hide
your SSID.

I have similar problems with SqueezeBox Radio. The network radio
stations play for a while and then suddenly stops playing until I press
the channel preset button again. Also red WiFi signal icon has been
appearing ocassionally without reason. Signal strenght is allways
between 50% and 80%. I think the problems got worse after the latest
Media Server version and Radio firmware update.
Is there any information how to solve this really annoying problem? Can
the Radio be downgraded or is it necessary to be same version as the

No new deviced attached, nothing else changed with the network. Radio

Checked router and the Radio is no longer listed as an attached device.
Just did a long-press/power off on the Radio, turned it back on, and
it's back to being attached with the same IP address.

Maybe it was just a fluke, but I'll see how long it runs for.
Edit: This time WiFi dropped in under an hour. Same thing happened as
 above. Argh.

Update: well, after the above happened and the WiFi dropped in under an
hour, it ran continuously and without dropout until I got a new router.
I'm testing out an Asus RT-N66U router now with WPA2-Personal, and have
had no dropouts for 24hrs.

Interestingly, for kicks, I didn't reserve any IP addresses for any of
the Squeezeboxes I have, and have done no port forwarding or anything
else. The Radio is still programmed to 192.168.1.101 and is static.

So maybe it's the router? Or it could be the new firmware update for
LMS and the Radio. Guess I can't tell now, but I'll plan on running it
continuously and post an update as an edit to this post with uptime.

I am also having trouble with my wi-fi connection. Every so often I will

I have had the radio for several years and have had good connectivity.
The only thing that has changed on my set up has been the official
up-grades of FW. However, I live in a condo and there are new people
upstairs with a very strong wi-fi signal. In my living room, I get a
stronger signal from his router than from my own. My living room

In your situation, it might help to have fixed IP addresses (not just
reserved in your router). search the forum for threads on how to do
this.

Also, I assume you've checked with inSSIDer or netstumbler to see what
channel the neighbors are using and you use one far away. Stick with 1,
6, or 11 if possible as these don't overlap with other channels.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio WiFi keeps dropping.

2012-03-25 Thread squeezemonkey

squeezeb,

I keep running in to the same issue. I have two squeezebox radios and a
duet with controller. In my setup I have the duet receiver and one of
the radios connected via ethernet and everything works as expected. I
have the duet controller connected via wifi, and that works as
expected. However, I cannot get either radio to stay connected via
wifi. When I do a factory reset and go through the setup process the
radio will connect (as verified on screen of the radio with the white
wifi symbol, as well as from the console of my wireless
infrastructure), but once I've gone through a few more setup screens
the wifi symbol on the screen shows blue (and then red) and my console
shows the radio no longer connected. This happens every single time
without fail, and additionally, the radio becomes incredibly slow and
takes as much as five seconds to respond to a single click or wheel
rotation. I'm pretty sure the issues are related - the radio does not
slow down when connected via ethernet. I've tried with and without
wireless security, and I've tried with static IP and with DHCP. There
are no duplicate IPs. Same results in all cases.

Wireless setup:
-SSID is broadcast
-I have tried WPA and WPA2, as well as temporarily turning off all
encryption
-Signal strength is 100% (according to radio diagnostic screen)
-Radio has an IP address (according to the radio diagnostic screen),
but can't ping it from other devices

I'm positive. If I look at the logs in my WLAN controller and DHCP

radio's UI slows to a crawl) the radio disconnects and shows the red
WLAN icon.

If you have a local store, go buy a router that you can return and test
it. A current high end Netgear N, Linksys (Cisco) 4200 or better, etc.
If that resolves your issue, you can decide if it's worth it to you
given the time you're investing.

Edit: Radio is still up, no dropouts! Thanks for all the feedback and

Welp, perhaps I jinxed myself. Radio just dropped out-- WiFi icon red.
No new deviced attached, nothing else changed with the network. Radio
became very slow to respond as before (slow/laggy menus, button press
registration, etc.) and couldn't connect to LMS.

Checked router and the Radio is no longer listed as an attached device.
Just did a long-press/power off on the Radio, turned it back on, and
it's back to being attached with the same IP address.

Maybe it was just a fluke, but I'll see how long it runs for.

Anyone have any ideas where to go from here?

Edit: I've tried turning UPnP on and off. Makes no difference.
I note that turning off the security makes it work, but often that is a
symptom rather than a cause. Most problems I have encountered of this
type are down to the compatibility of the router's DHCP server function
with the DHCP client in the player.

Rather than reserving an IP address in the Router (which still uses
the Router's DHCP server) have you tried setting a fixed IP address
outside the DHCP range? This completely bypasses the Router's IP
address allocation function, however you have to make sure they do not
clash with non-static IPs.

If the DHCP in the router is taking up all possible IP addresses you
should set it to use something like 192.168.???.005 to 192.168.???.100
which will give you 101 - 255 for available for fixed IP addresses.

I had similar problems with my two Receivers and Controller before I
set fixed IP addresses and now they are rock solid.

Actually I set fixed IPs for all my static network devices, that is
those that will never be used outside of my network (Squeezeboxes, two
static PCs, printer etc).

I set reserved IP addresses for the two laptops and smartphones.

I can't seem to add a static/reserved IP for any device outside the

block from 198.168.1.1 to 198.168.1.100, and try to set the Radio to
198.168.1.101 or above, it kicks up a message saying the IP must fall
within the range set.

Ideas?

And thanks for the replies folks.

that's because you are trying to reserve an IP address. With this
approach, it still has to be WITHIN the range (2 to 100). We're saying
to use a true FIXED IP address. You do NOT set this within the router.
See my earlier post. Instead, you turn OFF the DHCP server option in
the router temporarily. While OFF, do a factory reset on the SB
player, it will try to find an IP then fail, then you can scroll down
or whatever and you'll get an option to manually add IP address. Then
use:

IP: 192.168.1.101
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
dns: 192.168.1.1

then your SB player will connect with this IP address and it is NOT a
function of the DHCP server of the router. (don't forget to turn the
DHCP server in the router back to ON when done).

I've been seeing the same erratic behaviour from my Radio for the few
last weeks!
Like yours, my Boom has not a single problem with my wireless network,
it's just the Radio that goes mad.
At some time, it even got in some boot loops, and I had to reset it to
factory defaults using the +/power combo.

I've tried every thing I could think of, but none cured the problem
reliably.

Although it's never been far away from the Radio (3 meters), I've even
tried to get it closer: the Radio now reports 100% signal stength, but
still has problems playing music!

The only thing I could notice when it didn't work *at all* (constantly
rebuffering), was that some kernel process was eating all the CPU
time.

Now that it's working *a bit* better (it sometimes can play 2 or 3
songs in a row without any hiccup), I'm still amazed at how much CPU
time this process is eating:

# uptime
18:50:12 up 12 days, 9:56, load average: 0.08, 0.24, 0.25
root 700 2 10 Mar09 ?1-06:28:54 [AR6K Async]

The Radio is up for 300 hours, and this process has spent 30 hours on
the CPU?

It looks like there's something going wrong here...

[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio WiFi keeps dropping.

2012-03-06 Thread squeezeb

Hi folks,
I have a Squeezebox Radio, and the WiFi keeps dropping (icon turns
red).
I have a couple of Booms connected, all sync'd, no problems with them:
they keep playing music. The Radio, however, stops playing and the WiFi
icon turns red. When it does, the menus/scrolling are REALLY slow.
Forgive the long post, but I want to make sure I get all info across.

WHEN THE WIFI ICON IS RED:
Going to Advanced/Networking/Switch to mysqueezebox.com results on
Connecting to... and then Problem connecting/can't connect to
mysqueezebox.com.

Going to Advanced/Remote Libraries shows nothing.

Going to Advanced/Connect to wireless network/Finding networks finds my
network/SSID, says Connecting to... results in Can't Connect.

Going to Advanced/Switch Library/Retry current library results in
Problem connecting.

Going to Advanced/Diagnostics/Network Health/Check Network or Repair
Network results in Wireless - no link.

Going to Advanced/Diagnostics/Wireless Info says Not connected.

Looking at my router, the Radio is no longer an attached device-- it's
not showing up.

A full power off (long press power button) or unplug/replug of device
results in restoration of connection, and everything works fine for a
random period of time before things drop.

Things I've done: reserved static IP for the Radio (as I've done with
all my Squeezeboxes), forwarded ports as previously suggested in
another thread (3483, I think, and 9000). Moved the Radio right next to
the router. Firmware updated, LMS up-to-date, reset Radio to factory
settings, and even exchanged the Radio for another one.

I've called Logitech tech support already, and ran through all of this.
Their suggestion was that the WiFi card must be the issue, and to
exchange the Radio, which I've done. Still having dropout problems.

Again, none of my other Squeezeboxes are affected: the Booms, SB3 all
work fine, keep on playing, and never drop out. I've tried it with all
of them running/sync'd at the same time, and just with one other Boom
running. Heck, I've tried it with just the Radio running. Same
problem.

Any magic suggestions?

2012-03-06 Thread eganders

What happens if you leave ALL of your other wireless devices unplugged
(not just turned off) so they cannot interfere, how does your Radio
work then? By all your other wireless devices, I mean everything -
computers, iPads, phones, wireless games, additional WAP's or routers,
Squeezeboxes, everything except one WAP or router, and your Radio.

If that doesn't work, try setting the Radio up wired for testing
purposes. Still leaving everything else powered down. The goal here
is to find out if the problem is truly a wireless issue, or something
else.

Note that if you have more than one WAP or router, you might try
swapping them out too during this testing.

If any of the above works, try bringing pieces online until the problem
recurs. Note, that you may have to try different combinations of gear
until you're able to nail down the problem source.
