OK - here are the pics. Lot's of similarities to the smaller
Hunqapillars I'd say. This bike cleaned up amazingly well for a 25
year-old. Even the original tires are ready to roll. I don't think the
person I bought it from rode it much at all. Funny, but she had
purchased a hybrid bike to ride when all she needed to do was swap out
the tires and raise the bars. Until I can find a taller frame, I'll
add albatross bars on a tall stem - maybe fenders too. Fortunately I
have a longer 26.8 seatpost as the original is quite short. I am very
impressed with the quality of the Gen 1 XT components, Everything is
built to last. Of course I re-greased the headset and BB, and I only
had to adjust one of the XCII pedals. I've been using a big tub of
Campy grease for more than thirty years now, and it still smells and
feels wonderful. Man, I really love cups and cones! BTW - a 32mm
headset wrench works just fine on the funky 600 headset - just have to
be careful. Enjoy the pics.

I'm probably not the only one who has enjoyed the photos Grant makes
on his rides up into the hills around Walnut Creek. Some friends and I
rode a back-road loop around Lake Pepin on Sunday. Usually when I ride
around Pepin, the local vegetation is green and lush, but in March,

topography was reminicent of Grant's WC area photos. Also, we all were
riding steel (2 Rivs) and wearing clothes that didn't look like

I should, but have not yet, find the time to ride up around

[RBW] Re: Our own Walnut Creek

2010-04-02 Thread Garth
Looks like a fun ride Jim! Riding around Lake Pepin is quite a
journey.

As Joel stated, the Mississippi and all it's tributaries offers very
challenging riding.

I grew up in Rochester, which is blessed with hilly terrain just to
the East, NE and SE. Co. Rd. 9 out of Rochester towards Whitewater
State Park is a roller coaster no one can forget.
Winona and La Crosse are two great cities to ride around, as well as
nice cities to visit during the summer.
I rode the Oktoberfest 100 in La Crosse once many years ago all I
really remember about it was the ups and downs.
That's the difference between many Western states riding and the
Midwest. Climbs are often longer and less frequent out West.
In the Midwest . they're short (around a mile), but they can be
one after another after another.

Try riding around La Crosse(WI) and La Crescent (MN) in the Fall
during apple season. Midwest apples are the best on earth, but I
guess I'm partial:)

[RBW] Re: vittoria randonneur touring tire?

2010-04-02 Thread Garth
Vittoria Randonneur's have plenty of happy users, just jog on over to
Bike Forums.

I for one don't take much stock in price in a indicator of a tires
quality. These days there is no clear indication of what is, and what
is not a quality tire.
I read plenty of dissatisfied Schwalbe and Continental users. The
thing is, there's infinite variables when it comes to someone's
opinion of a tire.
The human phenomena of monkey-see monkey-copy makes reviewing
things rather comical.

I'd try the Randonneur's in a heartbeat and not worry about opinions.
Hey, you can buy 3 of these for the price of many Schwalbe's!

I myself can't see spending $65 on a bike tire. My Michelin truck
tires cost about $80 when I last bought them, as a comparison.

I've had a great ride with Performance Forte Metro-K 35mm tires
about $14 each. There's another 35mm tire they sell(the Gotham), made
by Panaracer, who sells the same thing, minus the reflective strip.
It's called the Crosstown. Performance sells it for $12 other
places sell the Crosstown for more than double that. So, I don't put
much stock anymore in more expensive = a better tire.
Retail is like a giant shell game. sell it for what you can and
hope you can keep the game going :)

[RBW] Re: vittoria randonneur touring tire?

2010-04-02 Thread JoelMatthews
You do not say whether you have ever ridden a Schwalbe tire.

I, and the many others who have, pay the price for the tire not
because of our simian intelligence level but rather because the tires
have an amazing combination of smooth ride and long life. I know the
prevasive WalMart mentality is that if something can be made cheaply
it must be better. That is not my experience. (heck, why not say
that a Rawland must be as good as a Riv. It's steel and cheaper after
all)

I went Schwalbe after years of riding many other tire brands. My
experience had been you either got a tire that was comfortable to ride
but prone to flats or was durable but felt as though you were riding
on granite. I have now added Grad Bois to my list of nice tires. The
ride of some of their tires is just amazing.

I do not have much experience with Panaracers, but have heard many
great accounts of their merchandise. My understanding is that while
Panaracer uses its molds when making for other brands it does not
always use the same materials.

Well, depending on work load, I just might take up Jim's offer. It is
an easy Amtrak ride from Chicago to Minneapolis. That is beautiful
country.

As for restaurant - I know there are some good choices in small town
Midwest. There is just no comparing what you can find in Northern
Cali. I did some riding in Sonoma a few years back. I would have to
dig up my file to confirm the towns, but recall at least three
different nights in podunk looking places that nevertheless had
amazing little restaurants every bit as good or better than in Chicago
hot spots.

As for coffee, almost like travelling in Brasil - wherever I stopped,
it was good. Get too far outside of the Midwest urban centers and
coffee drinkers are pretty much divided among the let's go to
Starbucks and the why would anyone pay more than a quarter for coffe

I love my Quickbeam. I've been riding it as a daily commuter in San
Francisco since I bought it last fall, with some weekend trips across
the bridge and into Marin. The Beam came set-up with noodle bars,
which I really like. For most of my riding, though, which involves
tearing around the city and hauling groceries, I found myself wanting
to try out a more upright position.

Enter the Jitensha bars...

I loved the Quickbeam before, yeah, but the new bars have taken it to
another level altogether. Upright, but still fast feeling with
incredible control, even with a loaded front basket. There far enough
out that I can still get decent leverage when climbing out of the
saddle. Anyway, if you're considering going a little swept back and
upright, but don't want to go as far as the albatross bars, I highly
recommend giving the Jitensha's a shot. Here're a couple of shots:

[RBW] Re: Rim / Spoke Cracks... Should I be concerned?

2010-04-02 Thread bfd

On Mar 27, 1:54 pm, Phil Roberts lugsnst...@gmail.com wrote:
Rick, while your rims probably won't fall off anytime soon they should
eventually be replaced. Those eyelet cracks are sometimes indicative of an
overall tensioning problem with the wheel. I've had eyelets crack from too
high tension (on a single-speed with no dish) and I've noticed them on one
of my wheels that had too low tension. I also know that some rims are more
prone to that. To date I have NOT had that happen to any of my Sun CR18s or
 Velocity Synergys. Everyone's mileage varies.

Agree. Over tensioning spokes is one way to have eyelets crack. I had
a rear wheel build by a local shop using Campy Chorus rear hub,
Ritchey OCR rear rim and DT db spokes. The wheel had *maybe* 1000
miles on it when I found 2 eyelets cracking. Very disappointing. I'm
planning to rebuild with either a Mavic Open Pro, MA2 or a Velocity
Aerohead OC rear rim.

The other possible way is anodized rim. Jobst stated that rims
cracked at the eyelet because of anodizing:

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/brandt/anodized-rims.html

I had my DA rear hub/Mavic Open Pro Blue rear rim crack too. However,
that wheel had been in use for over 10 years, probably 20K miles, with
no problem until I found the rim cracking around the eyelets. I
suspect it was the anodizing that finally caused the crack.

It is indeed yellow tape and amber shellac (I used Bullseye). I have

Regardless, if it doesn't match perfectly, it complements perfectly.
And yes, looking at the yellow tape you simply cannot imagine it will
ever match. But it does.

Those Ergons are nice. I am using the Portuguese cork grips from

very small amount of Amber shellac and got a real nice color. Of

put it on for a short ride to make sure it works, then let it sit. LIghts
are in original packaging and have been in similar storage as well. So much
for good intentions. I think I paid $200 plus shipping for it all. Selling
it for you today for the recession recovery price of $100 plus shipping
(~$30-50). Preference given to anyone that can pick it up locally as I
don't have a box for it yet and would have to do some dumpster diving.

Pics here:

I just put the Pasela tire on that was a take off from my Quickbeam. It's

If you happen to have a WTB Laser or Pure saddle with Ti rails, I wouldn't
mind using that for trade.

stretchy except for the elastic at the back of the waist, are perfectly

at knee.)

Love the Jitensha bars on my AHH. Mine have Ergon grips and a stem 1cm

tearing around the city and hauling groceries, I found myself wanting
to try out a more upright position.

Enter the Jitensha bars...

I loved the Quickbeam before, yeah, but the new bars have taken it to
another level altogether. Upright, but still fast feeling with
incredible control, even with a loaded front basket. There far
 enough
out that I can still get decent leverage when climbing out of the
saddle. Anyway, if you're considering going a little swept back and
upright, but don't want to go as far as the albatross bars, I highly
recommend giving the Jitensha's a shot. Here're a couple of shots:

[RBW] Re: Simpleone...any more info?

2010-04-02 Thread John Bennett
Good news/bad news regarding the SimpleOne.

Good news first- it's still on the calender.

Bad news- For next Spring.

The cost of a big Sam re-order, and the pending Hunqapilliar, make the
cost of the SimpleOne prohibitively expensive for 2010, since we are
required to pre-pay in full for the frames before they ship.

Apologies for the delay. It's going to be great, once we get it.

Good stuff. Really really good stuff

All I have now is the touring bike (Hillborne), the lightish road bike
(Davidson signature) and the bomber (Bombadil). I live at the top of
a super steep hill in El Cerrito, so I sold off all my single speed
stuff and there is no freaking way I will run a singlespeed in the
forseeable future. I think it's clear I need a Hunqapillar to be a do-
all-rack and bag bike and a loaner and the closest thing I run to a
beater.

Next year it'll be his and hers Betty Foy's, and maybe a Roadeo.

[RBW] Re: Rim / Spoke Cracks... Should I be concerned?

2010-04-02 Thread Angus
Crashing on chip seal really sucks!

On a recent club ride here in East Texas someone overlapped wheels on
a section of new, smooth asphalt and went down.

Before he had even stopped sliding one of the club elders declared
at least it wasn't chip seal!

Angus

you should only be concerned if you consider it bothersome to slide

[RBW] 52cm Bombadil for sale

2010-04-02 Thread jinxed
OK, this is in response to my trade posting. I have had several
inquiries about selling outright so I wanted to address that
possibility here.

My ultimate goal is end up with another bike whether that be building
a new frame with these parts, or some variation. Since my end point is
a 700c bike, the frame and wheels of the Bombadil are obviously the
first order of biz. The balance of the components I would be happy to
keep, sell, trade or some mix thereof. I also have the new style XT
parts that I built the bike with originally that I have no plans for.

That said there would be some room for mix and match.

At a bare minimum I would need to move the following:

Frame / Fork / Headset / Rich built LX/Synergy wheels with Pacenti
Quasi-moto 2.1's and lets say a steel albatross, or alloy moustache
bar thrown in- $1950 shipped?

Aside from that, what do you need/want...lets figure it out.

Drop me a line if you have ideas.
Thanks again,
Brad

[RBW] Re: 62cm Orange Quickbeam FS or FT

2010-04-02 Thread William
It's too big for me, too. I'll give you this free bump to the top of
the board in exchange for a question answered:

I see you are running a 'handlebar bag' on the rack without a
decaleur. How does that work for you?

I have a couple front bags that I think were built with a decaleur in
mind, but I haven't gotten around to setting them up. It never
occurred to me to just try using them without a decaleur at all. I
already have the Nitto Mini front. Should I just run it and be
happy? The bags have a leather strap to wrap around the upright loop
of the Nitto Mini. They also have straps to lash to the platform.
Maybe a decaleur would just be redundant

[RBW] Another Pepin ride

2010-04-02 Thread EricP
Okay, so Jim got to do all the fun stuff last weekend. But April 1st
was predicted to be silly warm and windy in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
High temp predicted to be 80. Took the day off work, grabbed the Sam
Hillborne, and decided to do the shorter version of Jim's ride.
Didn't do his ride due to many factors, including their speed and the
fact I had a gig that day.

Ended up having a fine time by myself. Per Jim's suggestion, took one
of the detours. Hill Rd is truly an understatement. At one point was
in my lowest gear and still wondering if I could make it up. Having
done about 65 miles at that point didn't help. The downhill was worth
it, though.

The Hillborne handled everything with aplomb. The 700x40 tires were
quite good on the unpaved section. Still zippy feeling on the
pavement. Even when totally exhausted, the bike behaved beautifully.
Drops were high enough that it wasn't too much of a chore to do a
couple of miles at a time in the hooks. That's not something that
could have happened a couple of years ago.

Enough of that, here are some photos. http://tinyurl.com/yjzdhkf

Ok.. I've tried the bars high, low, etc.. i think i'm just built wrong for this

heavy, which contributes to the twitchfactor.

i have another set of bullmooses, but that'd pretty much just duplicate my Sam,
if a wee bit diff with the 650Bs.
before i start swapping out various quills, and bars to find a good fit that
doesn't just overlap the SH... anyone got a silver or red Quickbeam about the
same size they want to trade for? or a Bomba? :)

lots of pics here:

only problems is a streaky shellac job. :)

 Hi Andrew,

I have followed this thread and I don't know the answer to your question
about why it feels twitchy, but I know what twitchy feels like from another
bike I used to have. It does not provide a confident feeling in situations
 where confidence is helpful.

I am writing because I have a 58 QuickBeam that I might want to trade.
Just to let you know I am thinking about it. I would not have any decision
for at least a couple of days and my guess is that I probably should keep my
QuickBeam. Also, my QuickBeam is green - one of the original ones, but in
excellent shape. The reason I need a couple of days is because I need to
put different tires on the QB and ride it a bit to make a decision. Until I
do that I won't have any decision.

If I get closer to wanting to trade I will send current pics of the QB.
For now, there is an old one attached. The bike is in excellent condition
with a green Brooks B17 Special and all original except for new brake pads.
When I change the tires it will have its original size 700 x 32 Pasela
Panaracers on it but not the original tires. I have Pasela 35s on it now as
an experiment. I had fenders on it at one time but there are no fenders
now. It has the Nitto Noodle drop bars that came with it. It is not
twitchy for me. I am kind of the opposite of what I think you said you
are. I have long legs and a relatively short torso and am about your height
 - maybe just a bit shorter, like less than an inch difference.

Don't mean to mislead you or give false hope but I am thinking about it.
If green is not your thing please let me know. I see you specified the
 other QB colors.

 iIt's a 59cm and i'm 5'11, but with a phb of only about 84.
and i'm north of 200lbs, so the whole setup remains a bit top and forward
heavy, which contributes to the twitchfactor.

i have another set of bullmooses, but that'd pretty much just duplicate my
Sam, if a wee bit diff with the 650Bs.
before i start swapping out various quills, and bars to find a good fit
that doesn't just overlap the SH... anyone got a silver or red Quickbeam
about the same size they want to trade for? or a Bomba? :)

 lots of pics here:

the thing is immaculate, and has noodle bars, brooks / nitto rack, stem,
 etc, as one would expect.
only problems is a streaky shellac job. :)

Esteban,
C'mon, we Norcals are all 6'+ in stature, you know that. Either way,
bring yer QB (or no), but- bring along something with two wheels,
regardless!

When do you think you'll be here (2040 N. Main)? Impromptu
Riv-ride(+friends, lurkers, hangers-on), anyone?

I wonder if there's a good market up there and if its worth bringing
the QB up to get a local sale. Are there tall people up there?

[RBW] Re: Cloth Tape, Twine, Shellac and Vanity

2010-04-02 Thread Liesl
I've found that there's also variation in the honey color of the
saddle itself. Just recently I tried orange cloth tape underneath with
6 coats of Bullseye amber and the final tone was very close to a
darker honey seat that I have. I've used both amber Bullseye and Velo
flakes on yellow cloth tape and synthetic cork tape and they are a
good match for lighter seats. I agree on the 5-6 coats. Also, amber
over kelly green is a good match for the british green brooks.

Also, for twining, waxed irish linen in 3-ply or 5-ply comes in many
colors and takes the shellack well.

[RBW] Re: Another Pepin ride

2010-04-02 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Lake Pepin is truly a remarkable place to ride and it's nice to see it
getting some air time here on this forum. I've ridden around it
three times, all as two-day jaunts during the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour,
in 2006, 2007, and 2008. In 2007 I blazed a dirt road alternate to
part of the Day Two route, which became the main route for that
stretch thereafter. This started a trend and other quasi Rough Riding
alternatives have been added, at least unofficially. You can see my
pix and videos from 2008 here, and once in there you'll find links to
my 2006 and 2007 pix and reports.

http://www.adventurecorps.com/chronicles/2008/2008pepin.html

Here's the blurp I wrote about it at the time:

Imagine a two-day cycling event which doesn’t allow Lycra, requires no
training (but lots of good attitude) and features riders in 1930s era
“street” clothing who stop at every single scenic overlook, roadside
historical marker, and café they encounter, while riding old British 3-
speed bikes that are commonly seen offered for a few bucks in garage
sales. This is the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour and it’s the coolest, most
fun, most enjoyable, and perhaps the most thought-provoking bicycle
event I’ve ever attended. The sixth annual edition was held May 17-18,
2008 and I rode it with my girlfriend Elizabeth, her sister Alison,
and bro-in-law Dave. It was my third Pepin Tour, Elizabeth's second,
and Alison Dave's first.

According to the ride website, “The Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour is based
on cycle touring in pre-war England. It was a gentlemanly time; few
people owned a car and recreation based on automobiles was extremely
limited. To get away for the weekend they would pack a few things,
mount up and head to the country. Most every farmstead had
refreshments or a room to rent, every little village had a family-run
restaurant; just look for the ‘Cyclist Teas’ or ‘CTC Recommended’
sign. It’s a romantic image to be sure but firmly based in reality.”

The spirit of the “gentleman cyclist” runs strong through the
organizers of this event, Jon Sharratt, the “Shirt-Tail Organizer,”
and Noel Robinson, the founder. For the third year in a row, Jon and
Noel offered to loan classic 3-speed bicycles to our entire group.
That amazing generousity once again confirmed for us that the
whimsical attitude featured on their website is not just their
Internet persona, but an authentic way of life.

The route of this two-day event features a 75-mile, clockwise
circumnavigation of Lake Pepin, a stretch of the Mississippi River
which is wide and distinctive enough to merit the “lake” appellation.
City dwellers need go no farther than this if they seek romantic
solitude, wrote panorama artist Henry Lewis in 1848. One can not
imagine a more lovely expanse of water than Lake Pepin in quiet, clear
weather. So said one of the many roadside historical markers along
the route, and I couldn’t agree more.

- Chris Kostman
La Jolla, CA
http://www.XO-1.org

PS We still have a few of both types of 3-Speed Adventure Society hats
floating around, if anyone is interested (we had some of those made
for the 2007 edition, as I recall).
