Get the 54cm - long top tube makes it bigger. I rode both and liked the
54cm just fine - I didn't notice the 58 being stiffer with the extra tube.
I think it's down to esthetics, but they have very similar reaches. With
50mm tires, the standover of the 54cm is very similar to my Hilsen. Love
this bike! Nice setup. Mine rides like it's on rails, and nothing beats
the roar of the hunqapillar!

So with LHT steerers, the only limitation on exposed steerer length is
aesthetic?

In other words, top tube length. OK, how are LHT top tubes sized? I'm
confident the expectation with that bike is drop bars, which would lead
to a shorter top tube than might be the case with a bike intended to be
used with porteur bars, such as many of the Rivendells and the Kogswell

Re: [RBW] Max tire on a Rambouillet?

2012-09-23 Thread Michael Hechmer
Is this a true 35 mm? And which fenders? I have two Pasella's labeled
35mm on my Trek, but they actually only measure 30 MM! These would just
barely fit on my Ram, fitted with Honjo fenders. How you mount the fenders
also affects the answer. My traditional method yields about 30 mm, but
more creative answers, previously described on this list, can yield more.
Also, metal fenders have a rolled lip and more complicated mounting than
plastic fenders and so will give less clearance than plastic. OTOH the
metal fenders will generally hold their shape and position better, so
tighter tolerances can be used with less fear of mis-alingnment and rubbing.

The Ram was designed to optimize around 28mm tires. I ride 29mm Grand Bois
and love them and the bike. Of course you can push the envelope if you
want. But if you want to ride 35 mm tires all the time it would be better
to get a frame that was designed to excel with that tire.

I think 35mm with fenders is more than a little optimistic. Mine was a
60 cm. I found I could barely get a 28mm tire past the brakes, and when
I did there was little space between the tire and the fender.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which bike next....?

2012-09-23 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Yes, the only limit on exposed steerer on Surly frames is aesthetic. This may
not be the case for other manufacturers.

I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of top-tube lengths, but that info is
available on the Internet for anyone to compare. But yes, since bar height
doesn't have to be a variable on the LHT, top tube length is the most useful
sizing parameter.

Very often people who want to buy a Surly will use Riv's sizing scheme. But
like someone above said, the Surly 58 cm is more like a 60-61 cm if you measure
center bb to top of the seat tube. And the top tube in most sizes of LHT or
Cross-check is very close to nominal frame size (i.e. 58 c-c on a 58 frame). I
have no idea if this makes the frame more suitable for drop bars or for porteur
bars, but for most people who go with Riv's PBH-based sizing guideline and drop
bars, it results in a stem that's sub-90mm (short) and tightish stand over.
Twice I've had LHT customers who couldn't let go of the Riv size recommendation
despite my having explained this ad nauseum...and then a week after the
purchase ask to do a frame swap for a smaller size. The customer is always
right!

2012-09-23 Thread Bill M.
If what you want is a Roadeo-ish light, quick, comfortable road bike that
wil accept 32+ mm tires, the Nordavinden is up your alley. I have really
been enjoying mine.

The Black Mountain is probably also a great buy, but I have no personal
experience with that one. Here's a link with fewer motors:

I was using 35mm Scwalbe Delta Cruisers which measure just a smidgen under
34mm on VO PBP rims. Recently switched to 35mm Scwalbe Kojak which measure
~33mm on the same rims. Both sets mounted underneath VO 45mm Hammered
fenders. I don't think I could be convinced that somehow my ride is being
compromised by using this size tire. When I bought the bike, the previous
owner had 28mm Paselas on it. I could not love those tires. The ride seemed
harsh. I loved the Delta Cruisers and the Kojaks are even better!

[RBW] Re: Dawn of the Hunqapillar

2012-09-23 Thread soapscum
I loved my Hillborne in every way and I really don't have the miles in on
the Hunqapillar to speak to the differences much, but on first blush the
Hunq is MUCH stiffer and it's immediately apparent in turns and under hard
braking. Also, I always wished my Sam had about 1cm more standover that it
did; I could stand flat footed (depending on the shoes) but only very
gently. The Hunqapiller has that lil extra standover I was missing.
Otherwise, it doesn't feel smaller than my 56 Sam at all. My setup is
identical to my Hillborne, and so far the only consequence of the
differences in frame geometry is that my frame pump is now too short. First
world problems. I'll probably have more to say about how it compares to the
Hillborne in a couple hundred miles.

Kinda sad that I missed out on what I believe was the Golden Years of
Rivendell products. Not saying that their products aren't Golden now. It's just
that I always end up finding Rivendell products on ebay that were sold years
before I even found the website. With that these are things I wish Rivendell
sold still.

Rivendell wool jersey! Always feel like when I find one my size on ebay
they go for 4 !times the original price. I like pockets on my back I feel for
biking it's the easy accessible place to grab things. Also they make for great
places for hiding bananas

Aussie leather slipper wool socks I had two pairs of these that were a size
too big for me but I would still regularly used on camping trips. I loved them!
But after a couple of washing the leather bottoms were done. When I went back
to try to get them

Wool Uno pocket shirt--- I remember seeing these on the website and thinking
how smart it was but never jumped on it because I was a poor college student.
Now Rapha sells one for like 80 dollars! I felt they were a smart design that
was way before their time.

Rivendell Brooks saddle? -- I've seen these floating around the internet from
time to time. I thought it was a neat idea.

Anyone else have other things they wish Rivendell still sold?

Hi Tim,

I have owned a LHT for two years now. Used it for brevets mostly

small , go fast, with 23mm tires, to ride. What a difference! Although I
got used to it, I know I need a more Riv-ish bike here at home. So, I'm
really considering a LHT. What are the opinions out there about the Surly,
and how does their sizing compare to a Riv? I will probably eventually get
a Roadeo, or a custom Riv, but I'm not ready for that investment yet, and
for now the LHT seems like it would be a good, comparatively low cost
alternative. What say you guys? Thanks.

[RBW] FS: Bleriot 57cm

2012-09-23 Thread Christopher Murray
Hello all,

I usually post here as cm but the google-gods have done
something-to-something and I can't post with that address now. I have a
57cm Bleriot for sale. The bike has less than 200 miles on it. I bought it,
spent a few years getting the parts, dragged my feet, moved from Tucson to
Bismarck, had a baby, and bought a SimpleOne. Just never rode it much.
Thought I would post it here before putting it on ebay.

Frame/Fork: Rivendell Bleriot 57cm
Headset: Stronglight
Stem: NItto Tech Deluxe 7cm
Hbars: Nitto Noodle 44cm
Post: Velo Orange
Brake Levers: Tektro (forget the model- basic, not fancy)
Shifters: Shimano bar-end 9 Speed
Brakes: Dia-Compe 750
Crank: Campy Mirage compact 50/34
Front derailer: Shimao Sora
Rear derailer: Shimano LX
Wheels: Velocity Dyad/ Shimano LX
Cassette: Sram 970 11-34
Tires: Nifty Swifty

The gray rubber part on the right shifter has a slit in it. I think it
came this way, but not sure. Other than that the bike is super- I would say
a 9/10 easy.. The tape is Fizik and is green. No saddle or pedals.
Everything was new when it went on the bike and works perfectly. Asking
$1350 including shipping. I will have the bike professionally boxed and
shipped. Of course willing to do a local sale or drive 3 hours in any
direction (fargo, MT border). $1250 if we do a local sale. Let me know
if there are any questions. I can send pics to anyone who is interested.

Thanks,
Chris Murray

2012-09-23 Thread Ron Mc
OK, I completed my liner for my sackville rear trunk sack.
I used a 12 x 18 x 1/4 thick minicell foam sheet, which I purchased from
salamanderpaddlegear. It cost me $5 (plus shipping and a few paddle
supplies to round out the order.
Fits like it's tailor-made, and certainly takes the slack out.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TZgdz9ImT40/UFzdYJMy3tI/ARQ/09qgC9alEB8/s1600/aP9210001.jpg

I used a piece of the leftover to make a top liner, which floats in the top
of the bag, but is quite snug when the bag is closed and will make it into
a decent cooler.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-M6b8suQkQGY/UFzdYLFkD2I/ARM/PGBs01APsa8/s1600/aP9210002.jpg

A quarter-inch liner doesn't diminish the capacity, of course, the foam
compresses as needed.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6ebahyBc28c/UFzdYCAo8ZI/ARU/rsHw3pqx98Y/s1600/aP9210003.jpg

I started by measuring the bottom and cut out the blank as a cross, so that
it went together square. When I installed it in the bag, I found that the
bag is narrower at the top, so the sides of the liner were buckling inward.
I cut out the vertical seams and re-glued it, butting the ends together,
and it fit perfectly snug.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Lk0VFKSpdAo/UFzdZ2WuGWI/ARs/lVKOQVtkoZc/s1600/aP9210006.jpg

so the blank you need to cut for this is narrower at each top edge by about
1/8.

Sorry I didn't write down the dimensions, but where I started from was
measuring the bottom panel on the outside.

Got a 30-mile ride Sunday, and will take some cold beer - and water.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hand Numbness, an observation

2012-09-23 Thread Kenneth Stagg
Not that curious. It's advice concerning weight on the hands, not power.
Peter White has an excellent explanation of why this works, but he also says
that it's not for everyone. Personally I find it more comfortable well back
but if I'm working harder (i.e. trying to go fast, or at least what passes for
fast for me) I tend to slide forward some. I will say that I've noticed the
difference on a bike that wasn't changed except for the addition of the VO seat
post - it took a noticeable amount of pressure off of my hands.

When shoved all the way back, my hands are now feeling more comfortable than

 Other thoughts:
Do you use a different hand position when descending than climbing? So
hands pressing into the bars differently?
Is most of your weight on the pedals while descending, like a jockey?
Do you move your behind backwards over the saddle and stretch out when

[RBW] Re: Hand Numbness, an observation

2012-09-23 Thread Ron Mc
bw has a great observation - it's called median nerve entrapment. I ride
with my wrists straight in all positions. The top center position on drops
bars, which we use as a rest position, is the worst for bending your wrists
back. (I've gone upright with M-bars and love them). When I find my hands
getting tired, it's a recognition that I'm hanging on harder than I need
to. Simply relaxing my grip, or opening wide my fingers and thumbs is like
a second wind for my hand. Most of the time, it's not that tough to hang
on.

On Tuesday, September 18, 2012 3:03:57 PM UTC-5, Mojo wrote:

Recently over on the Surly Long Haul Trucker list, there was a thread on
bike setup and comfort. The original poster was complaining about hand
numbness and most folks wrote in with the advice to raise the bars and move
the saddle aft to take pressure off the hands. I didn't have any good
further advice for the OP. But I do have an associated observation.
After riding low-handlebar racing type bikes from 1976-2001, I have been
riding more Rivendell-influenced bikes ever since, with my handlebars very
near saddle height and saddle now set back 1-2cm behind KOPS. I have always
had very minor numb hand issues. I just usually shake them out and they are
fine for several more miles or even hours. But I have observed over the
last few years that my numb hands seem to occur most often when climbing,
less so riding the flats, and never descending. This observation seems to
run counter to the idea that it is the extra weight on the hands that
 creates numbness.

Again its just a minor problem for me. I nearly always wear gloves. My
bars are all thinly wrapped in cork/fake cork. My reach is fairly generous.
Now of course on a loop ride I will be spending much more time climbing
than descending and maybe the most amout of time overall riding on mostly
flat roads. But if the theory that more weight on the hands leads to
numbness, why am I not feeling it at the bottom of my descents instead of
on the climbs? I really don't even have an hypothesis at this point.
 Thoughts?

Wow.

Man oh man oh man.You finally take a week's vacation and go camping and
there's a moderate kerfuffle in the group. And the distinct odor of
umbrage.

In the words of many barkeeps for a multitude of generations:

Gentlemen, PLEASE!

I'll paraphrase a point I've made before - in the written word, smiles and
head nods don't come through. So much of communication is non-verbal, and
when we distill it into a written format, it increases the opportunity for
things to be taken the wrong way, even under the most mundane
circumstances. Though we've grown in number, it does seem that most active
posters in this group have maintained the core element of what makes this a
good resource - a respectful, supportive and polite tone in all posts.

Now, I realize that this is a deceptively simple concept, but it also is
the only tenet (other than topic-specificness...) which I do feel needs to
be spelled out in the structure of this group. It worked in the past, it
generally works on a day to day basis and it should work in the future.

Accusations have no place on this list. Nor does name calling.

One of the reasons this group was created is to provide a venue to ask and
receive advice. Each of us is autonomous enough to act on advice we find
helpful, and discard that which is not. Nobody's trying to fool anyone
here, and all we have is our own experiences.

So, let's all move on. I'm locking this thread down.

[RBW] In theory: New Riv model with new SRAM 1x11 and no FD

2012-09-23 Thread James Warren

I'm pretty sure that the new Riv model with no cable stop for front shifting
(and hence no easy way to do a FD) would be a great candidate the new cogs that
SRAM is coming out with: 11 speed cluster in the rear with 42 as the largest
one and only one chainring in the front.

You could do 34 or 32 as your single front chainring and still pretty much have
a lowest gear suitable for touring. With a 32 in front, the 32/42 low would be
very similar to a 24T granny combined with 32T rear cog. With a 34 in front,
the 34/42 low would be a bit easier than a 24/29.

The lack of large outer chainring would provide good real estate for a pants
guard. Also, I've been riding my 1x11 Alfine QB a lot lately, and it's nice to
have a wide gear range and no FD. Just a bit less complication and a beautiful
bare seat tube when you look down. I think it would be even better with a rear
derailleur instead of IGH.

Such a bike would be really sweet.

Re: [RBW] Re: How do you tourists do it?

2012-09-23 Thread Bill Gibson
My 24-inch gear is on every bike I ride. When I am on a grade or surface
that is beyond my category, I dismount and push. That's a good way to leave
a cyclist's ego behind. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and sometimes
sandals, on tour.

My climbing frame of mind, which works in good headwinds, too, has been
shaped by long-distance walks across deserts and plains, where I've learned
to savor details close at hand, and admire horizons which recede all day
long. I have seen landmarks appear in the morning, and remain visible all
day, until late in the afternoon. Someday, I hope to ride mountain passes
that take more than a day.

I think one real secret to good commuting and touring is collecting
roads, which Jan Heine writes about. Even more than walking, happy riding
often means finding a good cycling road or path, quiet
enough, intriguing and daring enough, long enough.

Thanks for the great perspectives, everyone! Lotsa velosophy to keep in
 mind. Keep it coming.

I guess I just am hooked on that feeling of breezing along. The
 exhilaration.

But I guess I have to put that aside on the hills/headwinds that are too
much for me, and just enjoy the climb at whatever speed I can manage
 without overdoing it.

Patience, drop the ego, enjoy the climb and views. Lighten up the gearing
on the legs. Work on lifting one foot while pressing down with the other,
so they don't fight each other.

My bike came with a 36/50 crankset.
If I ever have to replace it, I think I will go for the Sugino triple with
the 26/36/46 rings. That way I will be able to climb alot easier and keep
spinning along.
Right now, I can just barely get by with my crankset and rear cluster on
the hills in my area, and the headwinds of late have been tough to ride
through.

The Surly LHT is certainly a capable machine, no question there. HOWEVER

every other mass-production model. The geometry changes with size range ...
far too much, in my opinion. The 46cm frame has a 74.5 degree seat tube
angle! That's insane for a touring bike that's supposed to be comfortable.
In contrast, the 48cm Riv Hunqapillar has a 71.5 degree seat tube angle ...
which only changes to 72 degrees in larger frames, maintaining a more
consistent geometry for all sizes. Of course, this really only affects
smaller Surly frames ... regular-sized folks don't really have to worry,
but for us small dudes, it's quite frustrating ... but yet another reason
to appreciate Riv design. I happen to have one of each ( a 46cm LHT and a
48cm Hunq), and there is an enormous difference in how they feel. I don't
ride the LHT much these days ... anyone need a smaller touring bike?

You could do 34 or 32 as your single front chainring and still pretty much
have a lowest gear suitable for touring. With a 32 in front, the 32/42 low
would be very similar to a 24T granny combined with 32T rear cog. With a 34

The lack of large outer chainring would provide good real estate for a
pants guard. Also, I've been riding my 1x11 Alfine QB a lot lately, and
it's nice to have a wide gear range and no FD. Just a bit less complication
and a beautiful bare seat tube when you look down. I think it would be even

Others have covered the gearing, patience, mental aspect, etc. My
contribution is loading. While it's not possible to eliminate the
affects of additional weight on a bike, it can be optimized by
spreading it around keeping it low. You need to experiment with
whatever you carry on your own bike to work it out but some loadings
work better than others. You don't want to be wrestling 40 lbs of
gear on a 30 lb. bike at 4 MPH. Been there, done that.

Oh, and if you think of attacking the hill: the hill usually wins!
Plus, it may have other friends for you to climb later.

Every climb has a top somewhere, perhaps hours away, but eventually
you get there. The wind can blow for days. Think about riding a
relaxed 10 MPH but into a 10 MPH headwind. It's pretty the same as
trying to ride 20 MPH.

Cross country riders often comment that they used gears crossing the

I'm sure SRAM XX1 will work well, but the stuff will not be compatible with

I kind of like GP's original suggestion of shifting with a stick. Has

You could do 34 or 32 as your single front chainring and still pretty much
have a lowest gear suitable for touring. With a 32 in front, the 32/42 low
would be very similar to a 24T granny combined with 32T rear cog. With a 34
in front, the 34/42 low would be a bit easier than a 24/29.

The lack of large outer chainring would provide good real estate for a
pants guard. Also, I've been riding my 1x11 Alfine QB a lot lately, and
it's nice to have a wide gear range and no FD. Just a bit less complication
and a beautiful bare seat tube when you look down. I think it would be even
better with a rear derailleur instead of IGH.

Such a bike would be really sweet.

Good point. Tubus and Bruce Gordon make good racks that keep luggage low

If you get one that hangs the bike from the top tune then buy those noodles for

2012-09-23 Thread dougP
The Italians always do things with a certain flair; I'd like to see
their design. Walnut or oak is a tough call.

At one point I'd installed a MTB triple on a racing bike with a double
FD, of course the drop onto the granny was unreliable. A simple
toe to the chain worked well as long as I planned ahead. Not so
good if in a hurry.

IIRC, as a youth Marathon Lon Haldeman rode without a FD (it broke or
something). He would be the expert on reliability importance of
FDs. Years ago, he did a story for the paper RR about an exploratory
trip to I believe Peru I think he set the bike up as a 1 x 7 or 8
for simplicity, reliability because that was good enough.

[RBW] Re: How do you tourists do it?

2012-09-23 Thread lungimsam

So you all are going at walking pace on hills with your bikes loaded to
 tour?

Since I really don't ride with anyone, I don't know what is to be expected
on climbs, speedwise.

[RBW] Any commuters here?

2012-09-23 Thread lungimsam
I have heard mention of tours, overnights, and recreational riding.

Does anyone commute on their Rivendell?

I have since about August and I really enjoy the stability on descents and
the great handling and cush of the bike and wider tires.

[RBW] Nifty Swiftys cracking sidewalls after only 2 months of riding. Normal?

2012-09-23 Thread lungimsam
Or unsafe?

Is it normal for gum/skinwalls for this to happen?

The bike is garage kept. Inflation kept at 75psi (max for the tire). No
furnaces/moving air or anything nearby to damage tires.

Puzzled.

[RBW] Re: How do you tourists do it?

2012-09-23 Thread Kelly
Speed wise it's what is comfortable or hurts best. It's individual and
personal. Go fast go slow ... Choose where you have the most fun.. Cramps and
pain later be damned. My opinion only

On tour I don't like being all sweaty and try to just go.. I also rarely travel
more than 50 to 60 miles when fully loaded.
Most grades and even long climbs say 8 to 12 miles are usually dynamic with
short runs of steep grades requiring or asking for walking speeds. The feat 3
4 5 percent stuff is just finding your groove as Patrick saiid. It is chasing
those expectations that can suck the fun right out of a great ride.

[RBW] Any commuters here?

2012-09-23 Thread Scot Brooks
I do, and I'm sure there's a lot of that around the bunch. My preferred combo
is my Sam H. with a large Saddlesack and dynamo lighting. Seattle weather be
damned!

[RBW] Re: Any commuters here?

2012-09-23 Thread Rob
I commute every day on my Saluki, year 'round, rain or shine. In terms of
miles ridden over the last couple years for me, it's about 10:1 commuting
miles vs recreational riding miles. Riding the Saluki, even if it's only
the 8 miles/day back and forth every day to work, is *such* a pleasure.
It's the nicest bike I've ever had. I say: Life is short. Why have a
beautiful-riding bike if you don't feel like you can use it for everything?
(That is, no, I don't have a beater I ride in the city.)
