[RBW] Re: Nitto T cages? (no VO for me)

2011-05-29 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Chris Kulczycki, founder and owner of Velo-Orange, essentially called
Jan Heine of Bicycle Quarterly a Nazi simply because he was born in
Germany. I am fifth-generation American, but by ancestry am half-
German, have a German last name, and I also speak some German, but
even if my own father had been a Nazi (he's not; he's an American),
that wouldn't make ME a Nazi. Anybody who stoops to that level of
character assassination simply because they don't like or agree with
(or, more likely, are intimidated by) someone else should be
ostracized in no uncertain terms, in my humble opinion.

Once I learned what an intellectual nit-wit Chris Kulczycki is, I
stopped supporting his business. That was all it took for me, but I
was headed that way, anyway, because I have had several of his parts
break, including his Grand Cru seat post, which has an absolutely
atrocious design. (I returned the poorly designed part with a letter
explaining the obvious design issue, but got no reply, no replacement,
no store credit.) In my opinion, many VO parts are of inferior
"quality" and are really just cheap, crappy knock-offs of hallowed
products. I don't ride junk; in some cases, doing so can get you
killed. It's not worth it, especially when the parts in question are
purveyed by someone with low standards of decency.

Here is an excerpt from the the offending post, which you can read in
its disgusting entirety at the link which follows:

"Having been born in Poland, had most of our family killed in the
second World War, had the factories and businesses that they owned
destroyed, and had my grandfather executed (a singe bullet to the back
of the head at point blank range) for being an officer and an
intellectual, I know all too well how members of certain cultures have
a tendency to set themselves up as the ultimate arbitrators of what is
right and wrong, of what is true and good, and of who is worthy. I am
also aware of the dangers of those who are sure that they know what
others think and what their motivations are." - Chris Kulczycki (irony
not intended, presumably)

[RBW] Re: Nitto T cages?

2011-05-29 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
I don't support VO. My bikes are VO-free zones.

Ben's is out of stock.

My local shop, Velo Cult of San Diego, is going to see if their usual
distributor for them has any in stock.

Just did a nice loop today along Mulholland and through the Valley,
including some "new" dirt. Nothing major, but it was spectacular. This
was on my Rivendell Roadeo.

[RBW] Nitto T cages?

2011-05-28 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
HI gang

I am building my new titanium Rawland Sogn and need some bottle cages.
I hit the Riv site to order some Nitto "T" cages, which are hands-down
my favorite cages and I have them on nearly all my bikes, but Riv is
not currently offering them. A quick search of the 'net finds them
generally unavailable anywhere. Anybody know the scoop, as to why, and/
or have 2 or 3 "new" ones they would like to sell?

[RBW] Re: My Roadeo on the Velo Cult blog

2011-01-26 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hi Rob

I've been riding all those same roads since my first double century in
1983. Up through the 80s, including when I raced RAAM in 1987, nobody
had a lower gear than 42x23. We sneered at C-Record when it came out
with a 39 tooth small ring. Eventually I got older, grew out of my
skinny teenager body, and started riding up much steeper climbs (Santa
Monica Mountains, for ex) and started running a 39 tooth front with a
25, then 26, then 27, and then finally a 28 largest rear cog.

Nowadays I run a 39/48 in front (or 38/48 on some cranks) and 11/28 in
rear. I can get up anything on that 39/28 low gear, including the vast
majority of the Rough Riding adventures in which I partake. I'm not a
fan of triple cranks and only have them on my two mountain bikes and
mountain bike tandem. I don't like "compact doubles," either, because
the jump is so wide between, for example, 34 to 48.

[RBW] Re: My Roadeo on the Velo Cult blog

2011-01-26 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Mike, the bars on my Raleigh Competition 3-Speed Fixed Wheel are
"track bars" from Eighth-Inch: http://www.eighthinch.com/track_bars.html

I was going for a Path Racer kind of set-up. I haven't decided if I
like the bars yet, or not. They feel great in the drops. I want really
shallow drops because it's not always as comfortable to get down deep
and low on a fixed gear bike for a long period of time. But of course
I've given up having nice, wide tops for the uphills and cruising
around town. Also, now that the adjustable stem has allowed me to dial
in the reach I like, I may install one of my lugged Nitto stems with
the longer quill, so that I can get the bars higher. But then if I do
that, I may go ahead and put on some Nitto "Dream" bars, at which
point I'd probably "have to" get rid of the "non-aero" brake levers!
See what a cascading effect just one change can have??? Also, I am
installing Challenge Paris-Roubaix tyres on this bike this weekend. I
just love them on my Roadeo and they will also cushion the harsher
ride one gets on a fixed set-up. Plus the tan sidewalls will look more
appropriate on this classic ride. when it's all "done" I will post a
full slideshow with lots of comments and details.

[RBW] Re: My Roadeo on the Velo Cult blog

2011-01-25 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Thanks, William. Those are Velo-Orange Grand Cru brakes on my Roadeo,
but I'm in the process of making all my bikes VO-free Zones, so Velo
Cult is ordering me some Paul's Racer M's (center-mount since I don't
have the braze-ons) to run instead. Those will go on the bike along
with the "new" Classic Silver bars, stem, and post by Ritchey in the
next week or two. I also sent off a twin of the Dura Ace 7800 cranks
to Tom Davis at www.perfectperforations.com to have them polished up
nice and silver. So the whole shiny silver treatment, and "final" set-
up of the bike will be done soon. Once it is, I'll post a slideshow of
all the images. It's a great bike, to be sure!

I'm planning to wear my Woolistic Velo Cult jersey at my 300km this
Saturday, unless it's predicted to be well into the 80s, in which case
I will wear a Rough Riders: Any Bike, Anywhere jersey with a thin Ibex
wool base layer. I hope to see some other Rivendell riders out there.

[RBW] My Roadeo on the Velo Cult blog

2011-01-25 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Thanks to Sky, Tom, Anthony, and the rest of the Velo Cult team for
their amazing service as San Diego County's premier bike shop which
caters to everybody except the mainstream - which means we fit right
in! Today they have featured two of my Rough Riding bikes, and their
recent work on them, on their blog:

http://www.velocult.com/blog/post/raleigh_competition_rivendell_roadeo

Click on over to their always fascinating blog which is always VERY
well illustrated with incredible photography. Today their blog
features my 1983 Raleigh Competition, which Tom outfitted with a 3-
Speed Fixed Wheel set-up, and my 2010 Rivendell Roadeo, on which Sky
installed hammer Honjo fenders and Challenge Paris-Roubaix 700x29
tyres. They do superb work and are great people. And don't my bikes
look as awesome as they ride??? (I'll be riding that Roadeo in a 300km
brevet this Saturday, from Moorpark to Santa Barbara and back.)

Velo Cult is located in the South Park area of San Diego, just a bit
south of University Avenue and west of the 805, in a really neat
neighborhood with a great restaurant next door (Whistle Stop Bar) and
a classic coffee shop (Rebecca's) on the corner. Velo Cult often show
films or have other social events at their shop in the evenings,. They
are a driving force behind the San Diego Tweed Ride and they also
created the San Diego Bike Commuter online forum and the
SDBikeCommuter.com Discount Program through which local merchants give
discounts to customers who arrive by bicycle.

As a follow-up to my original blog post, "Tom Ritchey: In His Own

has always lived on the SF peninsula, not in Marin County), these were
Tom's bikes, as sold by the Charlie Kelly / Gary Fisher partnership.
Enjoy! (Remember, click any of the images/pages to see it bigger.)

Great stuff, Ed. Thanks for sharing. It's fun to re-purpose a bike. I
recently took my 1983 Raleigh with full Super Record and tubular
wheels and converted it to a clincher 3-speed fixed gear bike. Now, a
bike I haven't ridden in 20 years and had no use for is back on the
road, doing something new, different, and useful!

[RBW] For Sale: 1992 Bstone XO-1 55cm (NEW SLIDESHOW!) with custom paint and restoration

2010-12-06 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Sorry for the re-post, but I have been asked for up-to-date photos of
the bike exactly as it is being offered. Last night I did the parts
swaps/installations and then this morning I photographed the bike
exactly as it is being offered. Photos and details here:

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/xo/

For Sale: 1992 Bridgestone XO-1, 55cm size, with custom CyclArt paint:
Exactly as seen in the photos!

Since I have only ridden it once in a decade, I am selling off my 1992
Bridgestone XO-1. It's a size 55cm and was custom repainted by Cyclart
in the same "tusk" off-white with the pearlescent clear-coat as it
originally had ("Cat. 2" level paint job). At the same time, I had a
third set of bottle braze-ons added to the bottom of the top tube.
This bike is better than new, truly. Grant Petersen gave it to me in
1992, when I was sponsored by Bridgestone Cycles USA. I raced it in
the Triple Ironman in France and some other events, but quit riding it
about 1996. I had it repainted by CyclArt in about 1999 and only rode
it once after that. It's been taking space (indoors, always) ever
since.

Asking price: A minimum offer of $2500, plus $50 Fedex ground shipping
within the ConUSA. Free delivery to San Diego area, along the 405
corridor in LA, and perhaps the Bay Area this weekend if I am
contacted soon enough. Payment accepted in cash or via Paypal only.

Please email me ASAP if you would like to purchase. Please state your
firm offer. Some preference will be given to prospective buyers who
can pick it up (La Jolla, CA) or to whom I can deliver it right away.
If I don't receive an acceptable offer, I will list it on eBay next
week.

This bike has been heavily upgraded. In fact, the only original part
is the moustache handlebars! All the components listed are new/unused,
having been ridden just once since installation (except for the
cranks, BB, and post):
- NEW/UNUSED Chris King headset in "3-D Violet"
- Two sets of wheels: A set of NEW/UNUSED custom 650c wheels with
Ringlé hubs in "3-D Violet" with matching nipples (28 hole front and
32 hole rear Sun ME14A Rims) which you can see in the photos below.
Also included are the original 26" wheels which have been respoked and
the hubs regreased (not pictured).
- NEW/UNUSED 9-speed shifting: Dura-Ace down-tube shifters are mounted
as bar-ends, with 105 front derailleur and Ultegra rear derailleur and
chain.
- Used Ultegra 9-speed era 170mm cranks and BB with 39/53 rings.
(These are the only components on the whole bike, except for the
handlebars and seat post, with any miles on them!)
- NEW/UNUSED Tektro brakes of unknown type: allow sliding the brake
pads up and down six mm's to use either size wheels.
- Circa 1985 Dura Ace non-aero brake levers give ideal cable routing
with moustache bars (almost NOS condition).

Other parts include the original Nitto moustache bars, a 27.0 American
Classic seat post, Concor Rolls Due saddle, Michelin tyres, and a 10cm
Nitto stem which GP gave me on a visit to Riv HQ.

Note: There are two flaws in the paint job: Some paint has flaked off
on the very top edge of the seat lug, adjacent to the seat post. Also,
there is a bit too much clear coat on the head tube, on the bike's
right side, above the lower head tube lug. You can see both of these
flaws in the photos, if you look closely. (Note that the seat post is
installed to just above the limit line, which is why it looks high or
tall.)

This gorgeous XO-1 is totally ready to ride as soon as you mount your
own pedals!

Also, I don't currently have any photos of the stock, original, 26"
wheels which are also included. They are with my wheel builder in LA,
but I will get them back shortly.

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/xo/

Thanks for checking this out! I don't offer it up for sale easily.
This bike has a lot of sentimental value to me, but I'd rather that
somebody ride the heck out of it, instead of having it on display in
my living room. I'm hopeful it will find a new home out there!

[RBW] For Sale: 1992 Bstone XO-1 55cm with custom paint and restoration

The whole drivetrain is unused.

- Circa 1985 Dura Ace non-aero brake levers give ideal cable routing
with moustache bars.

Other parts include the original moustache bars, an American Classic
seat post, Concor Rolls Due saddle, and a 10cm one-of-a-kind Nitto
stem which GP gave me on a visit to Riv HQ.

This gorgeous XO-1 is totally ready to ride, except NO CRANKS, BB, or
pedals are included. I can throw in some used but good Utegra 9-speed
era cranks (170mm length) and BB if you want, but I'll have to check
and see if I have 52-tooth ring for them (the max size you can mount
on this bike, at least with the 105 front derailleur, due to the water
bottle braze-on location on the seat tube). Currently the cranks I can
include have 39/53 rings.

Many photos are at the link below, but please note that the bike for
sale is as described above, NOT exactly as seen in the photos. These
photos are from four years ago, when I had a few different parts
mounted on it. Also, I don't currently have any photos of the stock,
original, 26" wheels which are also included, but they have been
respoked and the hubs regreased by a professional wheel builder.

Just to be clear, this sale does NOT include the following which you
will see in the photos:

- Ritchey seat post and Brooks saddle (the buyer will receive a silver
American Classic seat post and black Concor Rolls Due saddle).
- Ritchey cranks, pedals and BB
- The Dura Ace front and rear derailleurs depicted (the bike is now
equippped with a 105 front and 9-speed Ultegra rear, which work much
better and are unused).
- The 26" wheels with black hubs and knobby tires shown in the last
seven photos (the bike includes the first set of wheels you see, with
the violet colored hubs, AND the original 26" wheels with no tires).
- Bottle cages are not included.

Actually, I got the frame unpainted from Rivendell and had Joe Bell
and his team file off the original brifter cable guide braze-ons and
then braze-on the down tube shifter mounts when they did the paint.

[RBW] e-Garage Sale #6

2010-09-08 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hello fellow Rivendell Riders. I have yet more stuff I'd like to clear
out from my garage, so here's my new For Sale list (e-Garage Sale #6).
Please respond to me directly, not the whole list! First come, first
served.

Payment via Paypal only must be received within 12 hours. Thanks!

NOTE: All details and photos of ALL the items, plus relevant off-links
in some cases, are on my e-Garage Sale Webpage I keep this page up-to-
date, too, as regards what is still available, so check it before
contacting me.

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/index.html

Here is today's For Sale List (much more on the webpage!!!):

Dura Ace AX 170mm cranks with 42/52 rings. Note these do not say "AX"
on them, but they are the AX style. $60. (seven photos)

Dura Ace AX pedals, one complete pair intact. Note: I dismantled the
left pedal's bearing assembly, but all parts are there. $40. (two
photos)

Tektro R556 Extra Long Reach Brake Calipers: TWO "rear" brakes. Note I
have mounted rear brakes on the front many times, by simply sliding
the allen nut inside the steerer tube from the bottom, and bolting to
it there. MSRP is $65 for F&R pair. My price: $20 each or $35 for the
pair.

Dura Ace AX 170mm right crank arm. $10.

Two left Dura Ace AX pedals. Note: one has "AX" on it and one doesn't,
but they are otherwise identical. $10 each or $15 for the pair.

Campy Nuovo Record rear derailleur with a Rally cage on it for wide-
range gearing. "Pat. 81" very shiny and in excellent condition. Both
pulleys are cracked, however I am including a used but perfectly good
replacement pair, as shown in the following photo. (three photos):
$125

Ritchey Logic WCS saddle with titanium rails. 270mm long by 140mm
wide.

Campy Record front derailleur from 5-8 years ago, I believe. Almost no
use. Appears to be for a triple? Fits 28.6mm seat tube. $25. (two
photos)

Campy NR/SR brake lever mounting bands. Excellent condition. One has a
nut and washer, the other doesn't. $10.

Campy NR rear hub shell with dust rings. Excellent condition. "Italy
35 x 24F", 32 holes. $20.

Campy SR front derailleur, braze-on, excellent condition. $40.

ONE Campy NR/SR "shield logo" brake hood in NOS condition. $10.

Campy NR brake calipers, front and rear, allen nutted, complete with
barrel adjusters. Rear pads have a lot of rubber left. Fronts are
worn, but still have some miles. Rear caliper has an "E" stamped on
its rear, which I don't recall seeing before. Rear has some rust on
the QR. $50. (four photos)

Campy pedals with Campy toe clips. I believe these are the
"Superleggeri" style, commonly sold with NR/SR groups. Very good
condition. Toe clips appear to be size large and have a bit of rust
and such. Cages have little to no wear, end caps are nice, axles spin
smoothly. $50.

Campy PISTA crank arms, left and right, 165mm in EXCELLENT, near MINT
condition. That's right, the track version of this beautiful crank!
Includes Suntour Superbe 52-tooth ring in essentially unused condition
and Campy chainring fixing bolts (deduct $20 if you don't want the
ring; deduct $10 if you don't want the bolts). Left arm has no date
code; right has "2" within a circle. $250 (three photos)

Campy NR/SR STRADA right only crank arm, 175mm, date code "0" within a
circle, in near excellent condition (just a bit less shiny on the
pedal end of the arm). $100. (three photos)

Campy NR/SR STRADA left only crank arm, 172.5mm, date "0" within a
circle, in excellent condition. $50 (two photos)

Campy NR/SR STRADA crank arms, left and right, 172.5mm, no date codes,
in very good to excellent condition (see some scuffing in photos).
Includes 43-tooth Nuovo Record chainring and non-Campy ring fixing
bolts (or deduct $20 if you don't want the ring and bolts). $195.
(three photos)

Campy NR/SR STRADA crank arms, left and right, 175mm, no date codes.
These seem to have been polished on a wheel, which has smoothed out
the fluting. Also, there are two tiny cracks, perhaps 1mm deep, one on
each side of the intersection of the "spider" and the right arm (I can
try to photograph them if you want photos). I hadn't noticed these
before. I know many people will ride them like this; others will take
a file and remove a bit of metal there to prevent the crack from
spreading. That's your call. NOTE: DUST CAPS NOT INCLUDED. $150.

NOTE RE: CAMPY: I have several NR botom brackets, NR & SR Seat Posts,
and NR & SR Chainrings in a variety of sizes. Please inquire, plus I
will post the details in my next list.

Suntour Micro-Lite Freewheel, 7-speed, 12-22, extremely little use.
It's crazy how light it is. $95. (three photos)

Mavic brake calipers (Modolo, badged as Mavic), allen nutted, short
reach, complete with barrel adjusters and relatively low use pads.
Dark gray anodized. $40.

Modolo Equipe brake calipers, allen nutted, short reach, complete with
barrel adjusters and relatively low use pads. Very dark gray anodized.
$40.

Ritchey WCS 4-Axis Carbon Matrix Stem, 90mm length and fits 31.8mm bar
diameter. Excelle

[RBW] Mason St. Clair / Wire Donkey 'Zine

2010-09-06 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
I'm wondering if any of you were subscribers to the little bike 'zine
called "Wire Donkey," published by Mason St. Clair?

If so, do you know of his whereabouts / status? My most recent edition
of his 'zine is from 2005 and I have nothing since. By my calculations
he'd be 81 years young now. Do any of you have any info about him? If
he's still cycling on this planet, I'd love an update. Emails to his
account go unanswered, but also don't bounce back as an invalid
address.

I have his phone number, as of 2005, but am hoping to get an update
before I try calling.

Thanks for any insights you can provide.

Yours in sport,
Chris Kostman

[RBW] e-Garage Sale #5, including five sets of unique wheels

2010-09-05 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hello fellow Rivendell Riders. I have yet more stuff I'd like to clear
out from my garage, so here's my new For Sale list (e-Garage Sale #5).
Please respond to me directly, not the whole list! First come, first
served. Thanks!

NOTE: All details and photos of ALL the items are at this link:

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/index.html

Wheelset #1: $100: Tubular, 700c, Nisi rims, 32 DT aero spokes front
and rear, Campy NR hubs (126mm rear, of course) which have been
slotted to accept the aero-shaped spokes. Included tubular tires are
not rideable and are included only as rim protection during shipment.
No skewers, though I do have some for sale separately. Spin smotthly;
rims are true. With new tires, ready to ride.

Wheelset #2: $350: Tubular, 700c, Campy C-Record hubs (126mm rear),
Araya Aero 1 rims. Spoke heads have an "A" on them: 28 holes front and
rear, with ovalized spokes (hubs are NOT slotted). Continental Giro
tubular tires were brand new one year ago and were professionally
glued on, but never ridden. Absolutely gorgeous wheels, ready to ride
immediately. Skewers included, though I believe only the rear is the
correct C-Record skewer, while the front skewer is Campy NR.

Wheelset #3: $150: Tubular, 700c, Galli hubs (126mm rear), Nisi
tubular rims, DT spokes, 32 holes front and rear (non-butted; 15
guage, I believe. Nearly perfect condition. Perhaps demo wheels; There
is a thin layer of glue, but almost no sign of use. Original skewers
included.

Wheelset #4: $250: Clincher, 700c, Torelli deep-dish rims (43mm tall
by 19 or 20mm wide) with Gipiemme hubs (130mm rear), 24 DT spokes
front and rear; front is radially laced (all non-butted, 14 gauge, I
believe). Campy 8-speed cassette installed and included. I bought
these gorgeous wheels in 1998 and rode them twice; in storage ever
since.

Wheelset #5: $100: Spinergy Rev-X, 650C, Tubular, 130mm rear hub. Rear
has never been glued, nor ridden; the front was a demo wheel: glued
and ridden once or twice. Immaculate and kept in storage since
approximately 1995.

PARTS STILL FOR SALE (from last e-Garage Sale; NEW LIST OF NEW ITEMS
FOR SALE TO BE PUBLISHED IN A FEW DAYS):

TA Pro-Vis 50.4 BCD cranks, MINT, 175mm lenth, WITH two TA chainrings

decals for arms. All unused! MSRP: $336! My price for everything:
$225. (116mm IRD bottom bracket to mate with these cranks also
available for $25; It has been mounted, but not used.)

tube. $30. From the collection of RAAM founder John Marino.

Dura Ace 7400 braze-on front derailleur. Very good condition. $30.

Tektro front brake caliper, black color, never used, long reach (I
measure the reach at 50 to 70mm, approximately), no brake pads. This
unlike any Tektros currently on the market. They are most similar to
the R538, but there's no "hole" in the one arm. Allen-nutted for
recessed mounting. I had used a pair juse like this one them to
convert a 700c bike to 650B. $15. (Note, I have used "rear" brakes in
the front by putting the allen nut inside the fork crown.)

An unusual bottom bracket cup with lock ring. Don't know what it is,
but if you do, and can use it, it's $3. From the collection of RAAM
founder John Marino.

Shimano Dura Ace 7800 10-speed cassette 12x25, complete except missing
one spacer. A little grimey, but very lightly used. $40.

Three bottom bracket axles which say "3SB Cr-Mo 83 -G" on one and "3SB
Cr-Mo 83 -J" on two. 121mm long and the bearing "flanges" are 50mm
apart, center to center. Lightly used. $5 each or $10 for all three.
>From the collection of RAAM founder John Marino.

Shimano Dura Ace cassette cog, from the 7-speed era of the late 80s.

old stock. No allen mounting bolts. $3 each. From the collection of
RAAM founder John Marino.

Shimano 7-speed 13x27 HG Hyperglide cassette. Lower end, used, but
perfectly usable. $10.

Shimano Dura Ace AX Seat Post, 25.0 ROUND (tear drop at the top, not
all the way down). Very good condition. No scratches, just some
scuffs. I have TWO: The second one says Dura Ace on the front, rather
than Dura Ace AX on both sides, and is in even better condition. $30
each.

Shimano Dura Ace AX Seat Post, AERO SHAPE all the way down. New Old
Stock in Original Box. Note: there were at least two types of these
tear drop-shaped posts: one had a blunter back side, and one had a
pointier back side. Frames were built with tear drop-shaped tubing
which fit one OR the other style. THIS ONE has the pointier rear side.
>From the collection of RAAM founder John Marino. $50.

Shimano 600 cranks, FC 6207, 170mm, with 42/53 Biopace rings. Go

[RBW] Re: Garage Sale #4: Shimano of all eras, and much more.

2010-08-30 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Seth:

I had about 20 boxes of parts, accumulated over the past 28 years of
cycling, which I've been going through. They are clearing out nicely,
but I am, of course, keeping some things for various build-up projects
I have in mind, and some items I just can't part with.

I still have about six more boxes of parts to announce, including all
manner of Campy NR and Superbe Pro, plus some Dura Ace AX cranks and
pedals, a bunch of saddles, some forks. Also, seven sets of wheels,
about 15 stems, maybe eight to ten pair of handlebars. That will
probably take 3 or 4 more "garage sales" to clear out. (It would be
too overwhelming to inventory, photograph, web-post, announce, and
sell it all at once. Plus I don't have space to do all that
simultaneously.)

Then I have a classic Raleigh and an Alan Carbonio to sell. I may sell
my Kestrel 4000, either as a frame and fork or maybe as a complete C-
Record bike. Kicking around selling my Ritchey Skyliner tandem, too.

Then there's the Cyclart-refurbished 1992 XO-1 which is better than
new...

Sorry, I think I sound like I am bragging. I apologize. I just love
love love bikes. I've been a cyclist since 1982, did RAAM when I was
20 in 1987, and organize cycling events for a living. I was sponsored,
getting one to three free bikes every year from 1984 through 1994,
plus I also had a lot of parts sponsors. I never throw anything away
which still has the ability to be used. I have also collected a lot,
attended bike swaps and such, supported companies like Rivendell, Velo-
Orange, and Wallbike.com, been given things, bought whole "estates" of
bike parts, and such. I hope I don't sound like a pack rat or like I'm
rich. I'm neither. I'm just explaining (and helping myself to
understand) how I ended up with so many parts to unload.

Mainly, this just feels really good to clear out the vast majority of
all this stuff. I'll still have a wide selection of bikes to ride when
I'm done (I have 15 frames / bikes). I'll probably ride even more,
too, since I won't be dealing with, thinking about, and swapping
around all these parts, too!

Also, practically everything I am offering for sale is actually
selling. That means my prices are good, maybe" too low" in some cases,
but also that I am making other people happy. I like that. This is
basically a win-win-win as far as I am concerned. I appreciate the
support and enthusiasm!

[RBW] Garage Sale #4: Shimano of all eras, and much more.

2010-08-30 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hello fellow Rivendell Riders. I have yet more stuff I'd like to clear
out from my garage, so here's my new For Sale list. Please respond to
me directly, not the whole list! First come, first served. Thanks!

NOTE: All details and photos of ALL the items are at this link:

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/index.html

Note I am including many items which are from the collection of RAAM
founder John Marino. Those parts therefore date to 1978 through 1984,
which was when he crossed American three times in Guinness Book World
Record Attempts (successfully in 1978 and 1980), then in the 1982
Great American Bike Race, and finally in the 1984 Race Across America.
John is my long-time friend and mentor. I own and restored his custom
Mike Melton (with "Huffy" decals) from the 1982 GABR and it is
featured in Jan Heine's book "The Competition Bicycle." I will have
many more of his parts, especially French parts, in the next round of
sales, probably next week.

Dura Ace Ace 7800 53 tooth chain ring. Lightly used. $30.

Cinelli M71 pedals, no cleats, used, but very good condition. No
cleats. $30. From the collection of RAAM founder John Marino.

Dura Ace AX shifters, New In Box, complete. For top mount on the down
tube. $30. (two photos). From the collection of RAAM founder John

Dura Ace 7400 braze-on front derailleur. Very good condition. $30.

Tektro front brake caliper, black color, never used, long reach (I
measure the reach at 50 to 70mm, approximately), no brake pads. This

the R538, but there's no "hole" in the one arm. Allen-nutted for

the front by putting the allen nut inside the fork crown.) Also note:
I sold a pair of these on this list recently. Same brake as that pair.

Ritchey skewers, used, with external cams. $5.

Dura Ace headset, new in package, for threaded 1" steerer. This is
modern, perhaps 5 years old. $30.

An unusual bottom bracket cup with lock ring. Don't know what it is,
but if you do, and can use it, it's $3. (two photos) From the
collection of RAAM founder John Marino.

Two sets "Cyclo" bolt-on saddle bag loops, for saddle which don't have
loops. One pair mounted and removed without using. One pair still in
the package. $10 per pair.

American Classic water bottle cage hardware, still in package. $3.

A curious Stronglight bottom bracket which is surprisingly light,
considering its appearance. Spins nicely. Vintage late 70s to early
80s. From the collection of RAAM founder John Marino. Says
"Stronglight France Brevette 35 x 100" on it. $30. (four photos)

Dura Ace 7401 rear deraillaur. Says "6S 7S SIS" on the cage as it will
work with 6-speed or 7-speed (likely 8-speed, too, but I don't know
that for a fact). Good condition, but there is a crack in one pulley
(which would guess would continue working, anyway). $20. (two photos)

TA classic water bottle cage "tops." These tended to fall off, so if
you have one of those awesome cages that needs a new "top," here's
your chance. Used, but fine. $3 each in gold, black, or blue.

Skymounti Inclinometer. MSRP $25. Mine is used, but excellent. $10.

Stronglight 148 Bottom Bracket Axle "Marque Deposes" stamped. Also
says "11 76 P". 148mm long and the bearing "flanges" are 54mm apart,
center to center. Used but very good. $10. (two photos)

Shimano Dura Ace cassette cog, from the 7-speed era of the late 80s.
24 tooth. Excellent, except for some sticky gunk. $2.

3.5 pair of Dia Compe Aero Grand Comp brake pads. New old stock. No
allen mounting bolts. $3 each. From the collection of RAAM founder
John Marino.

Specialized hubs, freewheel style, used, but very good. (I swear these
hubs last forever.) 36 holes each, rear is 126mm. $30.

Trois Etoiles spokes and nipples, with original boxes. 298mm length.
How many? I don't know, but if you are a serious buyer and need to
know, I will count them. "Lots," though! $10. From the collection of
RAAM founder John Marino.

Shimano Dura Ace 9-speed 12x27 cassette. Excellent, lightly used. $40.

Shimano 7-speed 13x27 HG Hyperglide cassette. Lower end, used, but
perfectly useable. $10.

Grab-On handlebar pads / grips, So 1982!!! New old stock in package.
$5. From the collection of RAAM founder John Marino.

Shimano Dure Ace 9-speed down-tube shifters, 7700, New old stock in
package. $30.

Shimano Dura Ace AX Seat Post, 25.0 ROUND (not tear drop all the way
down). Very good condition. No scratches, just some scuffs. $30.

Shimano Dura Ace AX Seat Post, AERO SHAPE all the way down. New Old

[RBW] Re: Vitruvian Shoes

2010-08-26 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
I've been a big fan of Vitruvian shoes for years. I'm sorry they are
going out of business.

I just ordered three pair, to tide me over for a year or so. I will
probably go ahead and order even more, because they are just great!
(And $25 is too good to pass up.)

Alas, I also have two pair to try to re-sell, as I got two pair for my
GF, but they don't fit her. I have these to hopefully pass along:

0101065Proportion Mens size 6 1/2 - Wms size 81
$25.00
0501065Harmony Mens size 6 1/2 - Wms size 8 1
$25.00

Any takers? More info:

http://www.vitruvianrunning.com/

BTW, I have a mint set of Modolo Kronos brakes and levers, complete in
box with all paperwork, extra parts, tools, etc available on my For
Sale page (and one classic TA bottle cage):

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/index.html

Thanks for helping me move these shoes (and perhaps brakes) to a new

[RBW] For Sale: More Garage Clean Out (very extensive list)

2010-08-25 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hello fellow Rivendell Riders. I have yet more stuff I'd like to clear
out from my garage, so here's my new For Sale list. Please respond to
me directly, not the whole list! First come, first served. Thanks!

NOTE: All details and photos of many of the items are at this link:

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/index.html

Hero GoPro helmet / bike cam. New, unused, in box, with helmet mount,
head mount, plus several optional goodies (suction cup mount to use,
for example, on the outside of car or plane), and the handlebar / seat
post mount. All unused in original packaging. Original MSRP for all of
this: $260, I believe. My price: $125.

TA Bottle Cages: the classic, iconic, indestructible bottle cage of
days gone by! I have three: one is mint ($50) and two are lightly used
(one with a tiny amount of rust) for $40 each.

Regina "Record" chain with gold outer plates which are "drilled" for
lightness. NOS in original box. My price: $30.

1986 Zeus Supercronos 2200 rear derailleur (capacity 13 to 30 teeth)
WITH 1984 Zeus 2000 front derailleur (clamp on). Both are MINT,
unused. My price for both: $50.

Galli front and rear derailleurs, circa 1985. Black, MINT, unused
condition. Very rare. Like the Zeus der's above, a Campy NR clone. My
price for both: $50.

Campy Record 9-speed Ergopower "Brifters, Mint, the "classic" of this
style of shifting: levers are all polished metal (no big chunks of
plastic or cabon). Includes matching chain, also unused, and owner's
manual. My price: $100.

Campy C-Record brake levers with white hoods, all in excellent
condition. Very minimal use. My price: $40.

Suntour Superb non-aero brake levers (Campy NR clones). Very good
condition with some scratching. Hoods dry, but not torn. Great for
moustache bars. My price: $20.

Simplex retrofriction shifters, yes, THOSE SHIFTERS, the classic,
iconic ones. Very good condition. My price: $40.

Tektro F&R calipers, black color, very good condition, long reach (I
measure the reach at 50 to 70mm, approximately). These are unlike any
Tektros currently on the market. They are most similar to the R538,
but there's no "hole" in the one arm. Allen-nutted for recessed
mounting. I had used them to convert a 700c bike to 650B, which you
can just barely see in one of these photos:
http://www.xo-1.org/2007/09/ritchey-breakaway-conversion-to-650b.html
My price: $25.

Tektro RX 2.0 Interruptor Levers, new in box. Silver, for use with
caliper / canti brakes, to mount on traditional diameter h'bars. MSRP:
$35. My price: $20.

TA Pro-Vis 50.4 BCD cranks, MINT, 175mm lenth, WITH two TA chainrings
(34 and 50), plus all ring-mounting hardware, AND silver foil TA
decals for arms. All unused! MSRP: $336! My price for everything:
$225.

Ritchey Comp Seatpost, 27.2, black, MINT in package, 39cm long (very
long). My price: $10.

Chris Kelly Take-Offs: No longer made, these ingenious little devices
allow the mounting of down-tube shifters to the inside of brake
levers. Have "brifter" shifting without buying all new levers/
shifters! Plus, the shifting mechanism is to the inside of the brake
lever, making them much safer and protected from damage. Easy to
install and use. Used, but 100% functional. My price: $20.

Colorado Boomerang. New in package. Originally purchased from
Rivendell. My price: $8.

Alfredo Binda Toe Straps: the holy grail of toe straps with the two
leather straps sandwiching nylon, or whatever. One pair MINT in
original packaging. Off-white color. My price: $20.

Bar-end Shifter Pods from Riv: New in package. MSRP: $34. My price:
$20.

ITM Matching leather-wrapped bars (with stem) with Tornado saddle by
Iscaselle (similar to Turbo in shape and style. Tan color. Remember
that early 80s style when bars matched saddles precisely and the bars
had leather neatly stitched around them? NOS, MINT, still in original
packaging. 12cm quill stem (black) already installed (necessarily) and
bars are 41cm, center to center, with brake mounting bolts also
already installed, ready to accept Campy SR or similar levers. My
price: $40.

Silver (that's the brand name, as you know, and the color) down-tube,
friction shifters from Riv. New, in package. MSRP: $42. My price: $30.

Stronglight needle bearing headset. Well used, but perfectly
functional. NOTE: MISSING the base plate (the lowest part of the whole
stack). Black. My price: $5.

Shimano Dura-Ace crank arm pairs, both 165mm. Mod. 7402 era (late
80s', 7/8-speed). Both very shiny and overall in very good condition,
with the expected light scratching and scuffing, here and there. But I
think they look great and if they were my size, I'd use them. These
have a very low Q-factor. My price: $25 each.

Shimano Dura-Ace seat post, 26.8 fluted, classic style from the 80s,
20cm long. Overall very good condition, considering the age. I'm
picky, but would definitely use it if it fit one of my bikes. My
price: $20.

Shimano Ultegra 8-speed bar-end shifters. Used with some scratches,
but overall perfectly good. My price: $

Size Large Wool Jersey from Black Crater Clothing Company. Blue with
white chest panel. Measures 25.5" long in front and 27" in back; 19.5"
across at the arm pits. Fits me: 175" and 5'11.5". Worn and washed
properly once. Perfect condition. $40+$5 S&H to USA.

Size XXL (on the label), but more like a Large to XL. Wool jersey by
Bovis of France with Raleigh across the chest and back, plus CRC of A
on both shoulders ("Century Road Club of America". White/Yellow/Black.
No moth holes. A very, very soft, nice jersey. Some slight
discoloration near the shoulder seems and in the lower stomach area,
as if my bib shorts' ink ran or something like that. But not very
obvious and definitely invisible when cycling. Three pockets rear. I
think this is rare item. I bought it from the US Bicycling Hall of
Fame at InterBike several years ago and havae won it perhaps 5 to 8
times. $30+$5 S&H to USA.

Rivendell Wooly Warm wool tweed sweater jersey, worn perhaps 3 times,
size Large.
Fits me: 175# and 5'11.5". Has one small hole (pictured) low on the
front; I know that some dry cleaners can completely remove such holes.
These are not currently available. $50, plus $8 S&H to USA.

Any Miinolta film camera users out there? I have several classic
lenses I am about to put on eBay, as well as a fine example of the
rare and elusive Minolta XK Motor camera.

eBay Update:

My Auctions are here:
http://tinyurl.com/2c3cjyl

My auctions for Rouleur, Vintage Bicycle Quarterly and my "ultimate
collection of rare stuff" published by Rivendell end in just about
exactly 24 hours.

My auctions for all sorts of Bridgestone Owners Bunch materials end in
about 47 hours.

I also have auctions running collections of Bike Tech and Cycling
Science, as well as for 59 of the 60 issues ever published of Skeptic
Magazine (cycling connection: the founder / publisher is RAAM co-
founder Michael Shermer), plus ten years of Marathon & Beyond Magazine
and nine years of Ultra Running Magazine, as well as wide selection of
sets of "technical diving" (SCUBA) magazines, and more.

Thanks for your interest!

[RBW] Re: The ultimate compact double (IMO)

I have never seen that odd gray finish before on those cranks.

That is my all-time favorite crank, too, though. I have a mint double
set on my XO-1 and a well used triple set on my steel Moots ATB.

[RBW] Updated FOR SALE list

2010-08-17 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Wow, I guess I'm everybody's new best friend here since almost
everything sold right away after my previous post! Here is what I
still have For Sale. I will keep the website slideshow up-to-date,
too, to the best of my ability:

http://www.adventurecorps.com/forsale/index.html

For everyone who has paid by tomorrow morning, I will ship everything
tomorrow.

I also have five different Rivendell MUSA seersucker shirts, all size
large, which I will offer here tomorrow, once I photograph all of them
and put the photos online.

Here's the update on today's offering, in terms of what is still
available:

together with that little plastic doodad. I have had mine in a box
since purchase in December 2005. MSRP: $12. My price: $8 per pair,

Brooks B17 Champion Special, Black, Titanium Rails Barely Used

beginning). Includes a Brooks box (not original), tool, cleaning
cloth, and Proofide (applied once, but this can of Proofide is
unopened), as pictured below. Current MSRP: $337. My price: $150 plus
$8 S&H to USA.

B17 Champion Special, Titanium Rails, RARE GRAY COLOUR (which I have
never seen before). Essentially Unused: just one short ride; NO "break-
in". No box or anything else included. Current MSRP, except you can
buy this in gray as far as I know: $337. See other photos in this
slideshow. My price: $225 plus $8 S&H to USA.

$75, plus $5 S&H to USA.

mounted, red color (as shown). MSRP: $150. My price: $60, plus $5 S&H

leather trim and a padded nylon liner. It is structured to hold its
shape. Modeled after original design, but superior in execution. My
price: $50 plus $8 S&H to USA.

Hello fellow Rivendell Riders. I have a lot of stuff I'd like to clear

[RBW] For eBay: my entire Rivendell printed materials collection, and more

2010-08-17 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hello fellow Rivendell riders. I just started three eBay auctions
which may be of interest to you. I hope it's kosher to alert the list
with this email. Shortly I will also offer, direct to this RBW list, a
whole variety of Rivendell, Brooks, and related items for sale. Thanks
for your interest, and for helping me clean out my garage!

I am selling my entire Rivendell Bicycle Works printed materials
collection. This is quite a treasure trove for Rivendell fans as I
have been a member since Day One. I've also been a pack rat when it
comes to Rivendell, so here's your chance to learn everything you ever
wanted to know about Rivendell and get caught up on original copies of
the Rivendell Reader. Everything is in very good to excellent
condition. Here's what is included in this one-of-a-kind auction:

Rivendell Reader: 41 different editions, Issue Zero through Issue 40,
plus 42.
Fifteen Rivendell Catalogues
Also included in this collection are:
Custom Frame Ordering Package from 2002
Multi-page flyers for Rivendell bicycle models Romulus, Rambouillet,
Bleriot, and Atlantis
Ten different "specials flyers" from the past 15 years
Patch and thank you for attending card from Rivendell Weekend 2006

More details are listed on the Auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180548647098

I am also selling a set of Vintage Bicycle Quarterly Magazine back
issues (now known as simply "Bicycle Quarterly"): Issues 3.3 (Spring
2005) through 8.2 (Winter 2009), EXCEPT for 6.3 (Spring 2008), which I
can't seem to find. (If I do eventually find it, I will mail it to the
auction winner.) All are in very good to excellent condition, with the
exception of 3.3, which has a coffee mug stain on the cover.

Auction:

Finally, I am selling a set of Rouleur Magazine back issues,
specifically these issues: 1-5, 7, 8, 10, and 14-18. That's a total of
13 issues. All are in excellent condition.

[RBW] Re: IRD 7-spd freewheel on Phil Wood road hub

2010-07-05 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
I am pretty darn sure I have an IRD fw on my Phil Wood hub. Even if I
don't, I can not imagine what the Phil Wood people are talking about.
A freewheel is a freewheel. The only issue is how much lateral space
it takes up on that side of the hub. If it threads on nicely and
doesn't ram into your right dropout or right chainstay, then problems
seem unlikely, if not impossible (assuming you have a compatible chain
and derailleur on there, too).

[RBW] Rough Riders Rally recon: three Riv rides in Marin

2010-06-30 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hello fellow Rivendell riders!

I just got back from a three-day trip to Marin County to finalize all
the details of the July 23-25 Rough Riders Rally, including riding all
three Rally routes with my Garmin 310xt to create the maps, finalize
route sheets, and such. Full route details, including interactive
maps, elevation profiles, routes, photos, and much more, are available
on the website and in three new posts to our blog. There are also lots
of shots of my Roadeo out there. (My Roadeo had a low gear of 38 front
x 28 rear and was shod with Ritchey Speedmax Cross tyres, which have a
small amount of tread on them.)

I was also pleased to make the acquaintance of legendary cycling
journalist and author Owen Mulholland out on the trail.

Here are the links to my reports, routes, and photos:
http://www.adventurecorps.com/rrr/route/index.html
and

Registration for the Rough Riders Rally closes on July 16. It would be
great to have a bunch more Rivendell riders, and Rivendell fans, not
to mention Rivendell employees, participate in this first-ever event!

[RBW] Re: Shifting issues with TA Pro 5 Vis cranks/rings

2010-06-19 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hi all:

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Much appreciated!

The derailleur I installed at first yesterday was designed for
triples, and really wants to shove the chain UNDER the big ring when
upshifting (into one of those five gaps). So this morning, just before
the ride, I installed a brand new Dura Ace 10-spd front derailleur
designed for doubles. It has basically flat cage plates on it (as did
the Suntour Superbe Pro this bike used to have). The shifting is OK,
but it takes a lot of trimming to keep it from rubbing on one side or
another as the chain works its way across the cassette.

But the real issue is that now, on some downshifts from the big to
small ring, the chain will ride on top of the small ring's teeth,
instead of engaging the teeth. It's almost like the chain "expects"
the small ring to be closer to the big ring. This isn't the first time
I've seen or encountered this problem. Previously I asked the crank
seller (V-O) about this situation, but was told they'd never heard of
it. But I believe I have seen reference to "9- and 10-speed spacers/
washers" for these cranks, I think at the Rene Herse site. It would
make sense that a narrower chain would need its chainrings closer
together than a 6/7/8-speed chain. Does anybody have any knowledge of
such spacers / issues?

Here's a blog report from today with photos, plus my review of the
Garmin 310xt GPS watch / computer / thingamajig, including a link to
the Garmin Connect page about the ride with map, elevation profile and
much more:

[RBW] Shifting issues with TA Pro 5 Vis cranks/rings

2010-06-18 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hi:

I've never gotten suitable shifting with a TA Pro 5 Vis crankset with
32/46 rings. This is mated with Shimano 9-speed on the rear (11x34)
and bar-end shifters (Shimano 9 also). First I had it set up with a
Suntour Superbe Pro front derailleur and it wanted to overshift once
every 25 to 50 shifts, no matter how I adjusted the derailleur.

The local bike guru, who knows stuff old and new, suggested a modern
front derailleur, as they are designed to shifter narrower 9/10-speed
chains, whereas the old Suntour derailleur was meant for 6/7-speed
chains. The thought being: Maybe the "old" derailleur's cage is wider
because the chains for which it was intended were wider; now that
wider cage made it throw a narrow chain too far. That make some
sense.

Well, I've installed a brand new Ultegra 10-spd front derailleur and
it seems to keep the chain on either one ring or the other, and it
downshifts fine, but it takes a major tug on the shifter to get it to
move the chain to the big ring. In fact, when I upshift, what it's
trying to do is shove the chain between the rings, into the hole
between the five arms of the right crank, in the sizable vertical gap,
or hole, created by the 14 tooth difference in ring size. Of course,
modern rings, with their ramps and pins, would probably toss that
chain right up onto the big ring instantaneously. But I like the low Q-
factor of these TA arms (this is actually my GF's bike I am talking
about; she's 5'4" and prefer the narrower tread even more than I do),
plus the ring sizes available are preferable to a "compact" design.

Yes, the derailleur is mounted as low as possible abov the top rights.
In fact, the front derailleur cage is so long, it almost hits the
right chainstay down at the bottom. I find that odd since a 46 tooth
big ring is not small, at all. I don't see how this could work on a
crank with a smaller big ring.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

BTW, sorry I don't seem to have a good shot of the bike, or especially
its drivetrain online, though you can see her with the bike (gold 1974
Williams converted to 650B wheels) in front of the Nate Harrison Grade
sign near the bottom of this post:

http://www.xo-1.org/2008/12/rough-riding-northern-san-diego-county.html

We're headed out to Ramona / Black Canyon tomorrow and I'll get some
shots of the parts in question then, in case that might help any of
you help me assay the situation. Here's the blog report of a semi-
similar version of the riding we're doing tomorrow:

It's like all those people who say "axe" for "ask" or "nook-you-lur"

[RBW] Re: what would make the best..

2010-06-14 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Eric Hjertberg, who knows more about wheels than the rest of the
planet combined, told me that the combined frontal area of 36 spokes
is more than the bicycle frame itself, plus the spokes are spinning
through the air as the bike moves forward, further adding drag to our
forward movement. Thus, "the point" of having less spokes is about
aerodynamics, NOT weight.

As for ultralight tubes, any time saved because they are lighter and
offer less rolling resistance is probably negligible, especially when
compared to the time lost to the higher frequency of punctures they
will provide.

[RBW] Re: what would make the best..

2010-06-13 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
I would recommend some lighter, and more importantly, far more aero
wheels. In this day and age, such wheels, with, for example, 24 spokes
front and rear, are totally bomber if you buy from a reputable brand.
I have ridden piles of miles on such wheels in the dirt, without a
hitch. Cyclocross racers and lots of other heavy users rides wheels
like these all the time. (For that matter, I was riding 24 spokes,
front and rear, way back in 1985 and raced RAAM in 1987 with 20 spokes
front and 24 spokes rear. I have never broken a spoke in any of these
wheels and get out a spoke wrench maybe once a year. I weigh 172 and
am six foot.) The wheels made today have really optimized the weigh /
aeroness factor the max. Truly, except for maybe 100-milers on dirt,
or people who weight 250+ pounds, or fully loaded touring, the case
for 32 spoke wheels doesn't exist anymore. Here's a good example of
what I'd suggest, and they're only $300:

http://www.ritcheylogic.com/dyn_prodfamily.php?k=355378

You can see something similar on my Roadeo here:

http://www.xo-1.org/2010/03/rough-riding-in-snow-mount-laguna.html

You put those 24 spoke Ritchey wheels on your Sam Hillborne with some
high-performance tyres and you are going to be shocked at the
difference, in a very good way. Of course, I still believe in keeping
wheels like these just for special occasions, events, epics, etc. I
say that not because the wheels can't handle year-round use - they can
- but because you'll appreciate them more if you don't use them all
the time. (It's kind of like baseball batters swinging with two bats
while warming up.) Train / ride / commute on heavy-duty 32 hole
wheels, then use these special wheels when it's appropriate. (It bugs
the crap out of me that modern road bikes are sold with full-blown
"racing wheels" as the OEM wheel.)

[RBW] Re: Another Pepin ride

2010-04-02 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Lake Pepin is truly a remarkable place to ride and it's nice to see it
getting some "air time" here on this forum. I've ridden around it
three times, all as two-day jaunts during the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour,
in 2006, 2007, and 2008. In 2007 I blazed a dirt road alternate to
part of the Day Two route, which became the main route for that
stretch thereafter. This started a trend and other quasi Rough Riding
alternatives have been added, at least unofficially. You can see my
pix and videos from 2008 here, and once in there you'll find links to
my 2006 and 2007 pix and reports.

http://www.adventurecorps.com/chronicles/2008/2008pepin.html

Here's the blurp I wrote about it at the time:

Imagine a two-day cycling event which doesn’t allow Lycra, requires no
training (but lots of good attitude) and features riders in 1930s era
“street” clothing who stop at every single scenic overlook, roadside
historical marker, and café they encounter, while riding old British 3-
speed bikes that are commonly seen offered for a few bucks in garage
sales. This is the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour and it’s the coolest, most
fun, most enjoyable, and perhaps the most thought-provoking bicycle
event I’ve ever attended. The sixth annual edition was held May 17-18,
2008 and I rode it with my girlfriend Elizabeth, her sister Alison,
and bro-in-law Dave. It was my third Pepin Tour, Elizabeth's second,
and Alison & Dave's first.

According to the ride website, “The Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour is based
on cycle touring in pre-war England. It was a gentlemanly time; few
people owned a car and recreation based on automobiles was extremely
limited. To get away for the weekend they would pack a few things,
mount up and head to the country. Most every farmstead had
refreshments or a room to rent, every little village had a family-run
restaurant; just look for the ‘Cyclist Teas’ or ‘CTC Recommended’
sign. It’s a romantic image to be sure but firmly based in reality.”

The spirit of the “gentleman cyclist” runs strong through the
organizers of this event, Jon Sharratt, the “Shirt-Tail Organizer,”
and Noel Robinson, the founder. For the third year in a row, Jon and
Noel offered to loan classic 3-speed bicycles to our entire group.
That amazing generousity once again confirmed for us that the
whimsical attitude featured on their website is not just their
Internet persona, but an authentic way of life.

The route of this two-day event features a 75-mile, clockwise
circumnavigation of Lake Pepin, a stretch of the Mississippi River
which is wide and distinctive enough to merit the “lake” appellation.
"City dwellers need go no farther than this if they seek romantic
solitude," wrote panorama artist Henry Lewis in 1848. "One can not
imagine a more lovely expanse of water than Lake Pepin in quiet, clear
weather." So said one of the many roadside historical markers along
the route, and I couldn’t agree more.

- Chris Kostman
La Jolla, CA
http://www.XO-1.org

PS We still have a few of both types of 3-Speed Adventure Society hats
floating around, if anyone is interested (we had some of those made
for the 2007 edition, as I recall).

Many thanks to RBR's Ed Pavelka for the exposure. His free weekly
newsletter for roadie cyclists is an incredible and entertaining
resource. If you ride a bike, you should be a subscriber! (I mean that
sincerely.) Meanwhile, check out the Rough Riders Rally coverage in
this week's edition (which is featured on the front page of the site),
and also be sure to participate in his Rough Riding poll! (I hope some
of my fellow Rivendell riders will help bring those numbers up in
favor of Rough Riding!)

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet white out!

2010-03-31 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
This Rambouillet looks fantastic! White bar tape is as classic as one
can get, in a racy kind of way. (I was the race official "in charge
of" Jonathan Boyer when he won the Race Across America in 1985. His
mechanic put new white bar tape on all three of his bikes every day of
the race. I never forgot that.) I like the pairing of the "racey"
white tape and saddle with the fenders and saddle bag. The contrast
works nicely! (And orange, well, that's Eddy's color, so that's just
plain excellent.) Bravo!

[RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?

2010-03-30 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
PS As a follow-up, you may want to consider having your shifter cables
cross along the down tube. In other words, the rear derailleur housing
would loop from the shifter over to the left side of the down tube,
and vice-versa. This makes a cleaner arc in many cases. I often set up
bar-ends with the housings routed that way.

[RBW] Re: front bag with bar-end shifters?

2010-03-30 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Larry:

Lots of people run bar-ends with a handlebar bag. You'll be able to
smoothly route the housings, one way or another: either all the way to
the stem under the tape, or just straight out from the tape about 6"
ahead of the shifters. If the latter, usually you can route the
housings immediately beneath the h'bar bag. It will work fine. Such a
routing path can even slightly help to steady the front end which will
sometimes get wobbly when you put a rack and bag up there. All my
bikes have either down-tube or bar-ends. I do prefer the cleaner look
of down-tube shifters, but bar-ends are nice if you plan to shift
often while out of the saddle (and in the drops).

[RBW] Rough Riding in Adventure Cyclist; RR Rally roster and bikes

2010-03-30 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
More spreading of the gospel:

For those of you who aren't members of the Adventure Cycling
Association (some of us remember them as Bikecentennial), I'm pleased
to report that they featured rough riding, and the Rough Riders Rally
in particular, in their February issue. You can read a scan of it on
our blog at this link:

http://www.xo-1.org/2010/03/rough-riding-in-adventure-cyclist.html

We're up to 42 of a possible 100 entrants in the Rally. Rivendell
bikes on the roster include a Bleriot, an Atlantis, and a Bombadil,
plus some distant cousins (Bridgestone MB-1s and MB-2s). Those bikes
have people entered with them, too! ;-) Former Rivendell employee Gary
Boulanger will be participating with his Gaansari Whirlwind. Two bike
company owners who are registered include Megan Dean of Moth Attack!
and Sean Virnig of Rawland. Sky Boyer of Velo Cult in San Diego will
ride his Nobilette Rene Herse prototype (650B and demountable).
Charlie Kelly, the co-founder of the sport of mountain biking, will
also be participating! Here's the roster:

http://www.adventurecorps.com/rrr/roster.html

BTW, I will be inviting all of you on a pre-ride of the Saturday route
for the July 23-25 Rough Riders Rally some time in May. I'll post the
details once I confirm my travel schedule. I hope many of you can join
me!

Bikes aren't "competent" - riders are!

Also, my suspension fork has a lock-out: with a simple twist, I can
lock it out and eliminate the pogo effect when riding on pavement or
hard-packed trails. Not that I ride my "mountain bike" more than a few

[RBW] Re: Grant's latest post.

2010-03-30 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Most of the time, I like to use as little technology as possible, but
important factors I consider are:

- Am I meeting a bunch of "mountain bikers" for some hard charging? If
so, I usually take my Ritchey NiTi mtn bike (the first mtn bike I've
ever owned with a suspension fork, and I got it a year ago. But if I
know the trails well and they are not all rocky, I'll take a "fully
rigid" bike just to mess with people's minds).
- Is the ride mainly road or mainly dirt?
- How rocky or muddy or "dangerous" is the route?
- How dirty or "thrashed" will the bike get?
- How "beat up" am I willing to feel after the ride?
- Which bike will give the most rewarding experience, overall?

As I wrote in my article, there is a time and a place for a "real
mountain bike." I don't enter 24 hour races or Iditasports with a bike
which will put me at a competitive disadvantage. Seven years ago I
spent a week riding at Moab and in Canyonlands National Park,
"mountain bike territory," to be sure. I rode my Rivendell All-Rounder
with 26x1.9" knobbies. Blog report here:
http://www.xo-1.org/2008/04/rough-riding-on-slickrock-trail-in-moab.html

Full slideshow with 50 pix here:
http://www.adventurecorps.com/chronicles/2003/2003moabmaze/index.html

I'm heading out to that area again soon and have not yet decided which
bike I will ride. My Roadeo? The All-Rounder (which has a new JB paint
job)? The Ritchey NiTi? I'll decide as I get closer, but am leaning
towards the All-Rounder.

[RBW] Re: Grant's latest post.

2010-03-29 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
I just read Grant's latest post. It's a really nice introduction to
rough riding (or underbiking) and some of the techniques that come in
handy, as well as some of the many reasons to approach multi-surface
riding in this manner. I think he's being very conservative, though,
in suggesting that those used to 2" tyres should try 1.5" as a way to
sample rough riding. My feeling is, if you're going to do something,
go all the way. I first started rough riding by accident, or at least
without planning to do so. (I'm going to write up that experience for
the Rough Rider's Guide to the Galaxy which all participants in the
Rough Riders Rally will receive this July.) Anyway, I went straight
from trail riding a "rigid" mountain bike with 26x2.1" tyres to trail
riding a "road bike" with 700Cx23mm tyres and never really looked
back.

That said, it all depends on your local trail surface. Down here in La
Jolla, some of our local trails are pretty rocky. I found that even
more true, sporadically, in the Santa Monica Mountains. I've actually
never flatted an inner tube while rough riding, but that's because I
don't try to run 23mm tyres in super rocky terrain. So, around La
Jolla, and the Santa Monica Mtns, I usually run 30-32mm tyres to
protect the tube (and rim). But if your trails are as smooth as those
in the SF East Bay (where I discovered rough riding), I found 23mm
tyres, or 25mm/28mm at the absolute widest, to be more than adequate.
Of course, YMMV; don't forget those skills I bragged about in my
original article on the subject, way back in 1993!

[RBW] Riding Mount Laguna

2010-03-29 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
On March 20 and 27, 2010 we enjoyed some excellent adventures on and
around southeastern San Diego County's Mount Laguna. This Saturday's
group of 15 included Basketball Legend and AdventureCORPS Fan #1, Bill
Walton, with 11-year-old Moriah Swan and her 13-year-old sister Hannah
Swan. All three will participate in the upcoming Mount Laguna Bicycle
Classic. Moriah and Hannah are both incredible riders, just smooth and
beautiful on their bikes. It was pleasure to ride with them, with our
good friend Bill, and everyone else!

I rode my Roadeo, as you can see since it's the first photo on the
page! The carbon seat post and flimsy "racing" saddle have been
replaced with parts more sensible. Next the carbon bars and stem will
get replaced. Once I do that, I will post a full slideshow, including
the three different wheel set-ups which allow this bike to be "the one
bike to rule them all."

As we have opined before, truly one of California's best kept secrets
of the outdoor world is the area on and around Mt. Laguna, the 6,000'
peak in eastern San Diego County. The cycling there, on and off road,
as well as hiking, bird watching, flower-spotting, animal-seeking,
camping, and much more, are just unparalleled. Encompassing Anza-
Borrego State Park and the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area of the
Cleveland National Forest, it's a beautiful, gorgeous, wondrous place
to explore, enjoy life, and get way out there - all the while just 44
miles east of San Diego!

For those of you attending the San Diego Custom Bicycle Show, I
encourage you to find the time to head east a bit and do some
outstanding riding in the Pine Valley / Mounta Laguna area! Speaking
of that, my Roadeo and I will be on whatever ride Esteban organizes
for the fellow Rivendell riders that weekend. I'll also be at the bike
show one day (with Bill Walton), and will attend the party at Velo
Cult. I hope to meet many of you there, and see some old friends, too!

Here are some photos of the Mount Laguna rides, a post-ride hike to
Kitchen Creek Falls, and more:

[RBW] Re: Nice little write up on Velo Cult

2010-03-22 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Velo Cult is the only shop I frequent down here in the San Diego
region. They are great guys, very eclectic and fun, and true cycling
advocates and enthusiasts. Owner Sky Boyer (how's that for a cool
cycling name?) loaned me a part from one of his personal Chris King
headsets to help me get my Rivendell Roadeo on the road recently;
that's the kind of guy he is and the kind of shop they are. He's an
accomplished mountain bike and cyclocross racer, too, and "wise beyond
his age," as he's pretty darn young to have such a great shop and such
a broad view of cycling. (You wouldn't believe their "warehouse" -
seriously, they could charge for tours. Their shop's retail floor is
totally fascinating with the most amazing collection of interesting
bikes for sale. That selection is just 1/10th as amazing as what's in
their warehouse. It's like Velo Cult is a magnet or vortex for funky,
one-of-a-kind, and "impossible to find" classic bikes of a very wide
variety, even mountain bike tandems from the early 80s, just to name
one niche they are also into.)

They also founded and moderate http://www.sdbikecommuter.com, which
covers all types of cycling, not just commuting. They also were the
main proponents of the recent San Diego Tweed Ride.

They have a very image-heavy blog and are developing an online museum
on it and their website: http://www.velocult.com/ Sky and employee /
photographer Anthony even came over to our house a while back to
photograph most of my bikes, frames, and some of the more interesting
and/or odd-ball parts for the museum. (The shots are not online yet,
but I'll feel better about selling 90% of this stuff when they are
documented online in their museum.)

Any trip anywhere near San Diego by a cyclist must include a stop at
Velo Cult!

[RBW] Re: Chris K's Roadeo

2010-03-20 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
My down-tube shifter mounts were NOT an option: I had Joe Bell and his
team file off the stock cable housing braze-ons and then braze on the
down-tube shifter mounts when they had it for the paint. I had
Rivendell send it to JB with just primer on it to get the custom color
I wanted (Toyota's Barcelona Red as seen on the Prius and perhaps
other models). I have bar-end shifters on many of my bikes, but never
warmed up to the look of the housings, nor even the shifters. I've
used D/T shifters off-road before (which this bike was purchased to do
often) and they are not always ideal in certain bumpy, hair
situations, but I don't mind the compromise of a clean, aesthetic look
and very snappy shifting in exchange for having to sit down on
occasion to shift gears (actually, you just have to stop pedaling to
shift if you want to stay off the saddle).

I don't know what this bike weighs. Sorry. I don't have a scale and
don't really care that much. If I were guessing, which I will right
now, I'd say 18 pounds, but I really don't know. My main three other
bikes (RB-1, Kestrel 4000, and I forget which other) all weigh 21
pounds with 7-speed freewheel, 28-spoke, quill stem set-ups. Obviously
this Roadeo has much lighter features when just considering those
three factors. I wasn't trying to go super light when I set it up.
Literally I just used stuff I had laying around. The only new stuff I
purchased for this build were the derailleurs and chain.

I'll post more photos when I complete the second build-up, which will
eliminate the carbon parts and bring back my traditional Brooks
Swallow with ti rails. I'll have three wheel options so this will
truly be "the one bike to rule them all" - As seen currently with
"fast" low spoke count Ritchey race wheels and 23mm Ritchey tyres; or
with Chris King hubbed 32-hole wheels with 32-38mm cyclocross tyres;,
or with Dura Ace hubbed 32-hole wheels with 33mm Jack Browns. I
suppose, just for fun on occasion I can put on some tubulars when I
pretend I'm racing RAAM again with a pro mechanic behind me to change
my flats (which never occurred over 3,127 miles), so there will be a
fourth wheel option to silken the ride even more.

[RBW] Re: Chris K's Roadeo

2010-03-18 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Hi gang: Thanks for the comments about my new Rivendell Roadeo. What
you see is just the initial build-up, done just in time to spend five
days riding it in Death Valley recently. I'll re-work it a bit soon
and will post a full report and lots of photos to my blog at www.XO-1.org.
(The carbon bars, stem, and post were just to be ironic; as I value my
life and safety, they will come off tomorrow before I start trail
riding it to prepare for the Julian Death March.)

As for the paint, not to mention the non-standard down-tube shifters
braze-ons, I got the frame from Rivendell with primer and had it
shipped straight to Joe Bell. The color is Barcelona Red, a Toyota
Prius color which I'd see on the freeway and liked. Besides the
shifter mounts, I also had JB add my Major Taylor Association and
Rough Stuff Fellowship decals beneath the clear coat on the top tube
and back of the seat tube. As always, he did a heckuva job with it.

I love this bike so much, it's actually going to replace about eight
bikes in my stable! eBay is going to see my XO-1, RB-1, Kestrel 4000,
classic Raleigh, Tom-built Ritchey tandem, Alan Carbonio, Tom-build
Ritchey classic, and much more very soon, now that I have a bike with
the proper seat angle, super tire clearance, and the all-important
classic, timeless, purposeful aesthetic for randonneruing, Rough
Riding, and hauling butt all in one bike!

BTW, it's a 59cm.

I'll be riding it the next two Saturdays on our Mount Laguna rides, as
well as the next few Sundays on the trails near Julian while scouting
the Julian Death March route. (I plan to race that event on April 10
on this bike, with 32mm cyclocross tyres). If you want to join the
Mount Laguna rides, we'll roll out of Major's Diner in Pine Valley at
700am on 3/20 and 3/27. Anyone can join these rides, though they are
designed as training rides for our upcoming Mount Laguna Bicycle
Classic on April 17. I hope to see you out there!

[RBW] 80 For Haiti on February 13: Preview Slideshow

2010-01-31 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
Big thanks to Grant for taking the time give this Haiti benefit ride a
plug here on the list. The rider roster is online at the link below.
To the best of my knowledge, just on RBW lister has signed up so far,
however we are accepting registration through the 9th.

We rode the entire 80 For Haiti route on January 29, 2010 to finalize
the details of the route sheet, checkpoint locations, and more for the
February 13 event. The 81-mile route has 6090' of total elevation
gain. There are only three stop signs and no lights and traffic is
minimal to non-existent. I took a lot of photos of the spectacular,
one-of-a-kind route along the way.

Elizabeth rode her 2007 Ritchey BreakAway and wore Ibex wool knickers,
Ibex wool Skimmer cap, Ibex Kilometer Gloves, Injinji wool socks, and
Earth Wind and Rider wool jersey. Her saddle bag is a Nigel Smythe. I
rode my 1985 custom Ron Stout and wore Ibex wool bib knickers, Ibex
wool glove liners, Injinji wool socks, and a 1994 Castelli wool jersey
(made for Bridgestone). It was very cold in Pine Valley, but warmed up
nicely once we had climbed up out of the town / valley.

ride from start to finish (in 171 images), click here:

I got the SPD style and the road style and absolutely love them. The
fit is the same as my Sidis, but these look a lot "cooler." They
remind me quite a bit of my Sidis in the early 80s, but the quality of
these is even higher. I think the natural leather is probably more
comfortable and perhaps even form-fitting, as compared to the
synthetic materials of my Sidis. And I say that as a vegetarian! Plus,
they look just awesome. I wear the SPD version at my Spinning classes,

That would be Deanna Adams who did it on a road bike converted to
fixed gear, with 35mm Ritchey cyclocross tyres. Here is her blog:

The Great Divide Route is not "real mountain biking." Suspension is
not necessary, especially if that's not what you normally ride.

[RBW] Re: Riv geometry and clipless

with you for a fit session (which, when I do it, includes riding out
in the real world, not just in a static laboratory setting).

[RBW] Re: Looking for that String in The Custom Color Labyrinth (seeking Imron chart in San Diego area)

2009-10-13 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders

I am pleased to have a Roadeo on order and need to let the Rivendell
folks know the Imron color. I am in the San Diego area. Can anyone
suggest somewhere I can walk into to see an Imron color book or chart?

The color I want is a very old school celeste, like Bianchis were 50
years ago, sort of a pale blue. The Bianchis of recent decades are
much darker and often much greener, I believe. They are obviously
Bianchis to riders of the past decade because of "that color." I want
the old style pale blue, because I like it better and also because I
don't want it to say "Bianchi!" to riders of the current era.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: wool jerseys

2009-09-16 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders

I used Portland Cyclewear a few years back for a custom order and was
appalled, just absolutely appalled, at the service and the product
quality. What absolute rubbish garments and pathetic people skills. I
wouldn't use them again if they gave me their products.

I don't think anybody here has mentioned Earth Wind and Rider. Their
quality seems high but their customer service lately has dropped to
nil.

This past year I became a fan of Ibex. Theirs are the first jerseys I
can truly wear with no base layer and not be bothered by itchiness.
(For all the talk about "soft Merino wool," I have always had to wear
a base layer until Ibex.) I think their fit is fantastic, too, plus
they offer their wool jerseys in various weights, including one so
light I can wear it in SoCal in the summer. They do custom work, too,
so we plan to give them some business in 2010 for the Rough Riders
Rally.

[RBW] Re: Semi-Epic Ride Planned for Sunday, July 5

2009-07-05 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders

Eleven Rough Riders enjoyed a fantastic day of cycling in the first
real hot weather of 2009: It hit about 100 at some points. The route
featured "the greatest hits" of the Mt. Laguna back country: Viejas
Grade, Boulder Creek, Lake Cuyamaca, Descanso, and Wildwood Glen Ln
(AKA "Mad Max Road") with a start/finish in Alpine, CA. 58 miles with
about 5000' of elevation gain.

[RBW] Re: Funny question this morning? (version 2: digital shifting)

2009-06-11 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders

About six years ago I was on a ride in Solvang. I was on my Kestrel
4000 (the original Kestrel with the really large "aero"-shped tubes)
with a Campy C-Record group. I caught a couple of other riders, both
in their 20s, both on modern bikes with integrated shifting, etc. I
reached down to shift gears (down tube) and one of the guys looked
over and asked me "is that that new digital shifting"? I responded
"huh?" He said, "that digital shifting" again. I then realized that my
down tube shifters, with the derailleur cables routed through the
frame, were confusing him. Mavic or somebody had put out an electronic
shifting system of some sort around that time and apparently this guy
thought I must be using that, because he'd never before seen this
radical shifting system I was using.

I responded, "no, this is friction 7-speed shifting, This bike is from
1990." To which he replied, "but that's a carbon bike" I said
"yes, carbon's been around since at least the early 80s." At that
point his eyes glazed over and I veered onto a different road.

[RBW] Ride Invite: Mt. Palomar via dirt road, Nate Harrison Grade on June 14

2009-05-20 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders

Hello fellow Rivendell riders!

You're invited to a no-host, self-sufficient ride up northern San
Diego's awesome Mt. Palomar via Nate Harrison Grade, a dirt road which
is a lovely alternate to the overly popular paved roads. (We will
return downhilll via the pavement, however.) Extraordinary views are
to be had along the way, and especially from the tippy-top at the
Boucher Fire Lookout. Thereafter we'll also enjoy a stop at Mother's
Cafe, near the summit. I'll be riding my Rivendell All-Rounder, the
first ever built for, and sold to, a non-Rivendell employee, back in
1995 when such a frame was just $850. Photos of the bike are here,
although I've recently had it repainted by Joe Bell and it looks even
better (new pix to be posted soon):

http://www.adventurecorps.com/chronicles/bikes/rivendell/index.html

Here's a ride report and video slideshow from when we did this ride
last December (be sure to give it a few minutes to load the video and
turn up your speakers as there is a music soundtrack):

http://www.adventurecorps.com/chronicles/2008/2008nateharrison.html

On Sunday, June 14, we will roll out at 8am from Casino Pauma which is
amazingly hard to find. It's at 777 Pauma Reservation Rd, Pauma
Valley, CA 92061. Three bottles and/or camelbak recommended. More info
on the Rough Riders blog: http://www.xo-1.org/

I hope to see you there! This is a FANTASTIC ride and you do not want
to miss it!

PS We have a weekly 20 mile / 110-minute "Rough Rider Ramble" in the
La Jolla / Sorrento Valley, CA on Wednesdays at 5pm. Info here:
