Yeah, spell it "ssh" instead of "rsh" and you're in business. :-)

Seriously, though, it's a piece o' cake with ssh, and much more secure,
too.

I disabled telnet and rsh and pop3 on my system after my account on
a friend's box got cracked with a packet sniffer. We talked with the kids
who did it on IRC, and surprisingly enough they were quite willing to
explain how it all worked. I've been using ssh ever since.

Re: Apache and virtual domains

1999-12-27 Thread Eddie Strohmier

Deni:

I have a sample of my first entry on my name virtual host. I am allotted one
IP for all my virtuals but whatever the client wants. If the client wants an
IP address I would charge more but here is an example of an entry:
-snip from httpd.conf---

NameVirtualHost 12.15.105.15

ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /www/docs/www.supersoftball.com
ServerName www.supersoftball.com
ErrorLog logs/www.supersoftball.com-error_log
TransferLog Logs/www.supersoftball.com-access_log

_

The domain needs to be registered with the internic of course and things to
check after you have restarted your httpd server are:

1) The access logs and error logs that you detailed above. If your not
getting these logs check the /var/log/httpd/access_log and error_log.

2) After you restart the server can you ping the domain?

3) Does an nslookup resolve the domain to the IP address you have assigned
it?

4) Are your zone files correctly setup in your named server? I use another
server as my named server and my zone file will point towards the httpd
server 12.15.105.15.

If your give me some details on you log outputs I may be able to point you
towards what could be wrong. Virtuals have gotten much easier apache package
that comes with R.H. 6.0 and 6.1. One thing I did notice though was that you
must have that "NameVirtualHost" entry or this version of apache would not
work for me. The older apache versions that came with R.H. 4.2 did not need
that entry. Well as I said e-mail me some log outputs if your still having
problems and maybe I can steer you in the right direction.

Application Closing

1999-12-27 Thread William Salvino

I am running RH6.1 and Gnome. Recently I tried the "Desktop Switching
Tool" off the "System" menu to see if I could toggle between desktops.
Weirdness has ensued. The most aggravating is that when I select the
Address Book off the Netscape Communicator main menu the Address Book
launches then closes and then Netscape itself closes. The same thing
happens when I uses the keyboard sequence Alt+Shift+2. This is a major
pain; Not only can I not access the Address Book but it closes Netscape
everytime I try it. I have been looking in
/usr/doc/netscape-common-4.7/Netscape.ad but I am stuck. I reinstalled
netscape rpms with rpm -i --replacepkgs but it did not cure the problem.
Also, I have looked at files in /usr/share/apps/switchdesk but no leads.

Any help or advise about this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

dialpad.com no longer working through firewall

1999-12-27 Thread Todd A. Jacobs

I've got a RH 6.0 Linux router with masquerading via ipchains enabled, and
the ipmasqadmin RPM installed. Previously, my windows boxes were able to
connect to dialpad.com via the autofw facility in ipmasqadmin, but after
reloading Windows (a crash), that functionality no longer seems to work.

The problem seems to be that port 7175 isn't triggering the port
forward. Has anyone else worked with dialpad through a Linux firewall, and
have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? I'm not quite sure how
to monitor the traffic, to see where things are breaking down.

Re: Callback against Windows NT RAS.

1999-12-27 Thread Clint Tinsley

Can't respond to your connectivity part of this question but I do know that
an authenticated connection to an NT server does require a client license
for the "seat" regardless of platform. The out on this is if the server is
licensed for some number of client "seats" and you are using one of those
seats. Check with the administrator of that particular RAS dialup server as
to client licensing setup.

There is a script called 'sendfiles' (man sendfiles) that does this. I
don't know much about it; it looks like part of a larger package. However
it wants to really fragment your attachments (like 91 parts for 2MB

Run each attachment through uuencode and append the output to the text file.
Then mail the whole thing. That's quick & dirty but it should work. It
depends on the intelligence of the receiving mail client to separate the
uuencoded text into proper attachments.

For a more robust solution you'll need to use mmencode for MIME base64
encoding and have the script construct the MIME headers in the message. The
attached script wilkl work for a single attachment. You should be able to
alter it to accept multiple attachments.

What does you httpd.conf look like?

Do you have a NameVirtualHost line setup? Are you doing name based or ip
based virtual hosting (I'm guessing IP)?

Check your apache logs, especially /var/httpd/error_log...

Sounds like you want to head a project, if you want a distro optimized for
Intel, there is nothing stopping you from doing that.

If I were Redhat, my question would be: If we do that, how much are you
willing to pay?

It make more sense for Redhat to have one distro that covers the Intels,
AMDs, and Cyrixs of the world. Then they have time/money to work on SPARC

I have been using C@H for over a year with RH 5 and then 6.1. If you are in
Orange County CA I would advise you to ask for a static IP. Then, no problems.
You must put the full domain name in the DNS setup. Mine is msnv1.occa.cox.com.
Name servers are 24.1.160.33 and 24.1.160.34. DNS is "Required".

You really shouldn't have to do this but I've found that when running
dhcp, I sometimes need to manually insert the dns server(s) IP address(es).
This can be done using the control-panel --> networking dialog. See if
you can get you're cable company to provide them/it to you (mine wouldn't
do it).

I've heard that this would be fixed in 6.1. I guess not.

My KDE has no such animal, it has an "acceleration" and a "threshhold"

However, the "Resolution300" line, inserted judiciously in

Check your config, you are either attempting to load a module that needs ftape

OT: overclocked Celeron Q

1999-12-27 Thread Edward Schernau

Anyone else out there overclocking a Celeron? What kinds of temps
are you getting in your systems? CPU, "system", and what kind of temp
is the room?

I'm seeing 35 C on CPU1, 39 C on CPU2, and "system temp" of 39 C... this
normal?

Re: 686 distro. [Was: What about Mandrake?]

1999-12-27 Thread Gustav Schaffter

Agreed, Zoki.

I have a few 486's laying around where I see that I could use Linux and
get good use out of these boxes.

But, I would *not* go to the hardware store around the corner and ask
for a brand new 386 or 486. First, they would not have any to sell. They
would not even be able to order one. (I know this first hand.) I would
have some serious problems in buying a brand new Pentium of the first
generation. Honestly, I think I would fail such an attempt. I could
*eventually* find a dusty Pentium Pro, even though I doubt it. A PII
would be a bargain. A PIII will of course depend on clock speed and
additional equipment. (I don't talk performance here. I talk
availability.)

Having said that, I was actually looking at a used 486 at a flee market
a few weeks ago. Personally, I don't think I would buy one. I use the
ones I have, no problem. And I see no reason to throw them away. I see
lots of reasons for many people to use them, when they are already
there. And I think it's good that RH supports the 386 architecture.
That's respect. Still, I think it's really time to get a new generation
of distro now, optimized for the latest hardware from Intel. And I say
'from Intel' because they do have a huge market share, like it or not.

There are a *number* of buyers that go Intel 686 these days. For
whatever smart or stupid reason. Having payed such a price for a PC
(overprice?), the user will not be very happy to learn that the OS
they're using is optimized for a 386. No matter if the user makes use of
the power or not. It just doesn't rime.

Personally, i participate in two 'distributed computing' projects. The
Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) and SETI@HOME. So my boxes
do run at 100% all the time, and I'd like to have even more power than I
do. My main server is 2*550PIII overclocked to 103 MHz bus speed. I run
GIMPS on 400PIII and 266PII. To me, every clock cycle counts. :-) Still,
I'm not ready to start re-compiling the source RPM's for my systems.

Best regards
Gustav

RE: 686 distro. [Was: What about Mandrake?]

1999-12-27 Thread Dan Browning

Why not just create an installation program that compiles the RPMS at
installation time? For example, RedHat provides a binary i386 disc for
those who want a quick & easy install. But there could also be an
installation option that lets you chose to compile every source package
before installation for your target platform (386, 486, 586, 686, athlon,
etc.) Of course, the installation would take much longer this way, as it
compiles every source package. But it would seem like an elegant way to
satisfy everyone's desire. I've thought of writing such an program but I
don't have the time currently.

Eagerly (you have noo idea) awaiting the imminent arrival of @Home in my

was in the cable HOWTO last night that I found a link to a couple "total

Possible Project

1999-12-27 Thread Michael J. McGillick

Afternoon Hatters:

This is just an informal poll to see if there is an interest in doing
something like this. I'm interested in taking a Red Hat distribution, and
recompiling it to all i686 RPMs. Further, I would like to investigate the
possibility of changing a few things that the Red Hat install does by
default. I also would like to come up with some standards on the way that
RPMs are built, so that if the average user downloads a SRPM and wants to
rebuild it on their "stock" Red Hat system, it will rebuild with no
errors.

What I'm looking for is people who might be interested in working on a
project like this. I'm not looking to "create a whole new
distribution" or anything like that. Instead, if enough people were
interested, and we could show that these changes are possible, we might be
able to work directly with Red Hat to implement these things.

I have plenty of server space that I would be willing to donate to this
project, and would be happy to help out where I could. Again, I'm looking
to build on the strength of the Red Hat distribution, not reinvent the
wheel.

did you install the dhcp package ?

If yes (or after you have done it) yoou can try to edit (assuming
your ethernet card is eth0)
/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth0
and put

BOOTPROTO=dhcp

Normally you don't need to do anything else.

Then run

/sbin/ifconfig

and

route

to see what it says.

Assuming your "machine" running Apache is also running Linux,
I am not sure (except that Novell has java and activex hooks into
NDS you can program) but by mid-2000 Novell will have NDS v8
for Linux, so that you can run the NDS system on your network
via the Linux platform, and no NetWare.

Hi Gustav!

Well, I do buy 386 and 486 systems (or get them for free, too! =) ). They work
great depending on what you need them for. In fact, many industrial
microprocessors are still based on the 486 chip. Want to run a security system?
An energy saving station for a supermarket? Keep on inventory of a renting
business? Almost anything can be done on a 486 system. Why are we using faster
and improved systems? I guess because GUI are simpler to use for the average non
technical user. But when you have fixed application systems, you can make a
front end for the application that is user friendly for the guy who is trained
to use it, and you can run them on still very cheap systems.

Anyway, a user can just recompile his kernel and the applications he wants.
Takes more time, but seems a lot more fun to me! =)

Have a nice day!

Kevin,

I've got 1.94.4 running on a Redhat 6.0 system. It was a pain in the ass
to setup, although I'm not sure if it was just "first time, didn't know
what I was doing" or rather the .rpm, Redhat, or whatever screwed it up.

I started with the .rpm which through things into a kazillion different
places and ultimately didn't work due to permission errors. Since I like
new programs organized into one directory so that they are relatively
easy to remove (I'll ignore the 'rpm -e, you fool!' right now), I went
and grabbed the tar and followed the instructions within.

I had far more success with the tar and everything has been working fine
since then, with sendmail 8.9.3.

kernel recompile

Here is one.

I have redhat-6.1 and all I did what take out ftape support and
recompiled. When I try to run the recompiled version, it gives me a kernel
panic and a block-major-3 (scsi driver not found error). But it I boot up
from redhat's default. Everything boots fine.

I even tried updating to 2.2.13. Same thing.

What gives?
Thanks.

I just bought a Belkin 425VA ups... it has the serial interface, and is
supported under the nut package, maybe others. its a Trust/PowerCom 425
ups, rebranded by belkin.

It was a lot cheaper than the APC... $139

Does anyone have Net::SSLeay installed? I tried the RPM.

Hello,

Has anyone used/installed Net::SSLeay on their Linux 6.0 machine? I have
been to http://www.bacus.pt/Net_SSLeay/index.html and downloaded the RPM and
have installed it, but I don't know what to do from there to make sure it is
installed.

Also, how can I use the 'whereis' command to find Net::SSLeay?

I have tried 'whereis Net::SSLeay' and it doesn't work.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

RE: preventing data loss from power outage

1999-12-27 Thread Manuel Camacho

Hi Chip!

Bad news... you have power flickering, a surge supressor is USELESS. Diodes
on your surge protector are designed for instant peeks of current, and we
are talking of milliseconds here. So don't rely on this to protect your
equipment form the power flickering.

Good news: you can use a power regulator, instead. It is a kind of
transformer in 1:1 relation where you input 120 volts and you get 120 volts
in the output. What's special about that? Well, you have inductive forces
that always oppose to change. If power goes instantly up, then inductive
forces make an effect on the secondary winding of the transformer that try
to keep the voltaje as closer as 120 V in the output. A similar effect
happens when your input voltage goes down.

I've seen voltaje regulators for about $50 in computer stores.

preventing data loss from power outage

1999-12-27 Thread Chip Rose.

When the power flickers or goes out and the file system is not cleanly
unmounted, I lose a lot of files and programs, etc. I have a good power
surge protector. Upon reboot, it tries to repair itself, often
requiring me to manually run fsck (I need to read up more on how to
*properly* fsck..). Then, I wind up with a dysfunctional kde panel,
many lost emails, files, and even entire programs I had just finished
downloading get completely erased! If I had rebooted *prior* to the
power outage, all the files would've been safe, and a forced reboot goes
much easier. Question is - how do I manually do a "permanent"
save/write of these files, *without* constant rebooting? Can I run a
program to make it as if I had just rebooted?

[OT] cygwin-b20 on win95

1999-12-27 Thread Mark Price

I am trying to install cygwin-b20 on win95
when I get it downloaded full.exe, the icon is the
dos shell icon (which I presume it should
not be, because win98 shows the red box),
and even if I set its properties to NOT run
in dos mode, when I start it, it brings up
a dos shell that says "this program cannot
run in dos mode," then it quits.
I don't think it is a problem with the download,
because I did it twice (once in the split form, and
once as the full file), with the same results.

Anyone got suggestions, a pointer to a better list?

Thanks,

Re: [Q] Big Brother Web Browser Logging

1999-12-27 Thread Gustav Schaffter

Jake,

Well, yes and no.

It's a proxy for http that can be told to not accept packages from given
servers, given directories on given servers, etc. For instance: 'Don't
accept any packets from doubleclick.net'. It can also refuse to give out
or to accept any cookies. Etc.

It can also log all pages, .gifs, .jpgs, etc. that are received. OTOH,
I'm not really sure how to log who in your network asked for those
pages. (Except running one proxy for each user, which probably is not an
option.)

This leads to my real answer: I suppose you're right. I may have been to
quick to answer. Maybe that junkbuster is not your solution anyway.
Sorry if I mislead you.

Best regards
Gustav

1999-12-27 Thread Michael J. McGillick

Gustav:

I would love to get involved with something like this. I've already
started to put together my own i686 iso, but I've run into problems with
some of the RPMs rebuilding. If anyone else is interested in working on
this, and possibly doing some other modifications (IE. reducing the kernel
to one RPM instead of 9 or 10 so a kernel upgrade would be to install only
one new RPM, etc.), please count me in. I have storage space for RPMs,
and can work some nights on helping out with this.

I've got it in my script that sets up the firewalling. Go to

and look at the sample scripts. You can start with one of these and

RE: motherboard vs. Win9x (was AMD K6)

1999-12-27 Thread Ward William E PHDN

Not entirely... Linux does indeed care where a resource is on
the PCI bridge, as it's given a unique name. If the resource
isn't at that address, but a new resource with a different address
but the same name is in place, it will assume that it is the same
resource. For example, if I have a PCI Nic and move it from one PCI
slot to another, it will assume it's the same nic. If I have two identical
PCI nics, and move them BOTH, it will confuse the heck out of
Linux... I'll need to specify which interfaces are which. In my
own specific experience, I've had this happen with two otherwise
identical nics at PCI device 14 and 16 moving to 13 and 15.
Still haven't got it quite right...

I believe its some way that Win9x enumerates all your motherboard
and PCI resources, that causes this weirdness when you upgrade your
motherboard.

I just went from a K6-233 --> ABit BP6 dual celeron, and it ended
up redetecting a lot of things (PCI bridge, "motherboard resources",
etc. etc.) and detected (of course) the NEW things as well, like
the AGP <-> CPU bridge, and all that crap. If you move PCI cards
around, Win9x will "redetect" them. This leads to the annoying
little yellow ! signs in Control Panel, as you end up with 2 NICs,
or 2 VGA cards, one of which doesn't work, etc. etc.

Linux doesnt seem to care WHERE a PCI card is, or if you install
a new motherboard with a different bridge chip. Linux cares THAT you
have a PCI NIC, for instance, but not WHERE it lives.

I guess this is a Win9x feature...

686 distro. [Was: What about Mandrake?]

1999-12-27 Thread Gustav Schaffter

Hi,

I'd *love* to see a 686 compiled RH distro. It's not just Linux that
goes through the evolution. So does the hardware available in hardware
stores.

In a way, I can understand that RedHat doesn't want to go this way,
because then they would also have to provide a 586 distro etc, etc. And
when would they be able to discontinue the 386 compiled distro? Etc.

But I think it could be done as a distributed volonteer developer
project. As long as RedHat doesn't want to do it themself, I don't see
why they should (or could?) oppose to such a project. Maybe that RedHat
would like to participate, if it's run by volonteers?

Of course, there need to be a project definition, organization,
objective and scope definition, plus a serious coordination effort to
fulfill the sake.

Idea: Maybe(!!) the objective would be to always maintain a distro
optimized for the very latest available Intel platform?

If someone organized a distributed project to do this I would like to
participate. (Does it already exist?) But, I wouldn't find time to
manage it. Not even to participate in project management. I'd be happy
to maintain the latest 686 rpms for a limited and well defined subset of
the necessary packages. Kinda 20 - 30 rpms. Maybe more. I would also be
happy to provide limited space on my ftp server. Maybe 10 - 20 MB, but
no more. I don't see why such an effort couldn't even bring us a 686
compiled .iso of the RH setup.

As I already stated, it would require someone else to organize the
effort, though.

I'm aware that many people run Linux on 'old' hardware. I fully respect
this need, which is somewhat proven by the fact that I intend to install
RH6.1 on a few 486's laying around (when I find the time for it) and I
agree that there should be a 386 compatible distro available. Still,
nobody(?) *buys* a 386 or 486 system today.

What is missing with IMAP? That's what IMAP does - store messages on the
server (and allow for folders and subfolders).

LDAP is the 'Lightweight Directory Access Protocol' - basically, it's a
standard way to access information in a directory. It is not a directory in

asked me. And then when the install was done and I realized that I
didn't have an SMP kernel installed I tried to compile a new kernel.
Which promptly barfed after chugging away for 30 minutes.

That wouldn't be so bad but when I emailed their support address, (I
actually bought the Mandrake box) the only suggestions they could
give me was to reinstall or download all new kernel packages from
kernel.org and reinstall from their source instead of what I got on
the CD's. Heck I can get that kind of technical support from M$.

What about Mandrake?

1999-12-27 Thread Gustav Schaffter

Hi,

I'm happily using RH6.1 on a few of my boxes. :-) But, it's all 386
stuff. :-( And I *do* run software that would take advantage of the last
percent of optimization from a 686 compilation.

I have understood that Mandrake is compiled for 686, right?

Has anybody done an installation of Mandrake 6.1 over RH6.1? If so, any
gotchas detected? Am I supposed to do a Mandrake installation as a 'New
installation' or as an 'Update'?

I guess I could ask over at the Mandrake lists, but I haven't subscribed
to any Mandrake list, since I'm not using it. And here I start to know
who gives good and reliable answers. :-)

I could of course recompile everything from the RH6.1 SRPMs to get it
686 optimized, but what a mess. I just don't find time for that.

the logs from that to track what everyone is doing. If you don't have the space to set
up a proxy then you may be able to just have a redirecting proxy or something... dunno.

that's all that comes to mind at the moment...

I use a firewall box (RH 6.1, ipchains, ip masq) to share an internet
connection to my private network. What tool can I use to track which users
browsed which pages?

TIA!

Well, try using RHIDE. I use it on my Linux system for backwards
compability with the RHIDE DOS version :-)

Shouldn't be hard to find though.

Oh yeah, it's simmilar to Borland's C/C++ DOS editor.

ShivaPort ATOM terminal server

1999-12-27 Thread Reinder van der Veen

Hi,

I have connected dumb terminals to RH6.1 through a ShivaPort ATOM terminal
server. When connecting to Linux the screens build-up poorly, it may take
3-5 secs to draw one 25x80 screen. When connecting to AIX it works fine.

The 'stty'-settings do not really differ between AIX and Linux.

Has anybody any suggestings?

Reinder
