RE: RH 6.2 install failing...[Solved]
Solved incase someone else runs into this. I was compiling Kernel 2.4 on this machine and behold there was the old configuration question about PCI, EISA, or ISA. This is a EISA which the installer did not pick up on. I set it to the EISA bus and all is well now. FWIW here's my experience using 3c509bTPO cards on three different machines with RH 5.2 and 6.2: --Turn OFF Plug-n-Pray if your card allows it (the 3c509 does, but you must use a DOS utility to do so). --leave the alias in conf.modules --do not put any IRQ or address options for the network card into conf.modules. If you do, the drive install will fail at boot time. You'll still be able to insmod the driver by hand after boot, then start up the network, but it will not happen at boot time. For the kind of service you suggest you will use this machine for even a P90 is probably overkill, so if you end up using something less powerful I doubt anybody will notice. I'm using an old AMD K5-PR133 (100 Mhz part) here as a server/firewall/ ip-masq box, it used to be a P90, and it exerts no noticeable influence on network performance. Re: RH 6.2 and Ultra 66 problem
I finally got the kernel installed and things seem to run quite a bit faster! So far every thing seems to working correctly except for one minor curiosity. When I run Linuxconf and use it to configure LILO I get an error message that the root partition is not a Linux partition or invalid, and yet it is the one I am currently running. I can configure LILO with direct commands and there is no problem, just inside linuxconf. What could be wrong, and can I fix it? I've had this problem with 2 different burns of the 6.2 CD. RH 6.0 works flawlessly though. I should also mention that this is with 'expert' install. Text install will fail with different problems. this is very interesting that you mentioned this. I am having a *lot* of trouble with RH 6.2 with similar problems. I've since found and fixed the problem. it turns out to have been a bug in one of the data files being used by the demo, complicated by a lack of error reporting at certain places in the toolkit. Now the toolkit has much better diagnostics and error handling in certain places and it runs fine. i've tested it hundreds of times with up to 16 threads and it appears to run correctly now, with NO mutexes required. What I don't understand is the exact mechanism that caused that particular error in the data to result in that kind of a failure, but at this point I'm not going to kill myself to figure it out. if I remember correctly, you need to have AT LEAST /sbin on your root partition, because that has the main tools in it that linux needs to use to be able to do what it needs to do. example: mount things. if you mount /sbin on a different partition, then how's it gonna get mounted? leave it where it is. the installer knows what it's doing by rejecting this! I still use the KDE dialer under Redhat 6.2 ans GNOME. I still like it better, is more configurable. You do need to add items like MTU 1500 and the default route of ppp0 when it dials out, and eth0 when it hangs up, however. The KDE dialer has an option to obey locking or not. You need to have installed all the packages, GNOME and KDE for it to work. Re: RH 6.2 goes bonkers in 2 days!!!
John, First off, it could be the way your BIOS is looking at the drive. I use to work for WD in tech support. If I remember correctly this was not one of the drives that was recalled. But again it has been a while so I could be wrong. You can find the serial number on the drive by using something called diag. Go to this link and you will be able to dnload the util. http://www.wdc.com/service/ftp/drives.html It is called datalife guard tools. Run that on the drive, there is two option that you can run. One is going to clean off the drive, and the other is just going to check it. I would run the check first, then may be the one that will destroy the data. Also there should be a check to see if the serial number has been recalled. If so call the tech support number on the form and they can help. Tell them you want to do an advance replacement, it will REQUIRE a credit card. If you still need help write me off the list. After checking the man page, what would happen if I ran "e2fsck -c -n" on my /usr/local partition (the one in question and the one that will be idle during the night)? My wife will be less-than-impressed if I have to log her out every week or so to run e2fsck... Re: RH 6.2 goes bonkers in 2 days!!!
Ok, Good People: I'm going to attempt to answer all the many replies in this email. Most of you seem to think I have a bad drive. This is a very definite possibility. Therefore I surfed to the WD support site and downloaded their install/diags software and tested it. Didn't find any real errors but UMD was turned off, which I corrected and reset the drive. With that done, I wiped the drive and installed RH 6.2 a fourth time. Time will tell if that is the end of the problems. Unfortunately, my bios only supports one IDE channel so previously I installed a controller that handles two EIDE channels giving me a total of four drive capacity. That has become: hda - one gig Maxtor, hdb - 340 meg WD, hdc - 10.2 gig WD and hdd - 40X CD. As I have mentioned before, as money permits, I will build another box and hdc will become hda in the new box. In the mean time, it is in this box to get Linux on it, to give me something to learn Linux on, to give me something to learn C++ on and possibly something to basically replace Windoze. Once the hard drive problem is overcome and I get a stable RH install and manage to get on the web with RH, I'll be able to settle into learning all I can about it and the 637 packages that seem to get installed each time. I mentioned before that I didn't install everything. To clarify, I have installed everything except the servers. That is to say, I did not install the software for a web server, news server, ftp server, nfs server, smb server, etc. At this point, when I learn how to do it I will have a dialup connection to the web and won't be able to serve anything so the servers were left out. Everything else, including utilities, dev software, desktops, web client, publishing software, etc. was installed. If I've left out something that I need, please tell me. I am still a struggling newbie trying to learn as much as I can. I really appreciate all the replies I've received so far. I hope I'm not becoming a pest on this list. I've always felt that asking someone who knows is much better than making endless mistakes and ending with something that could be an embarrassment and non functioning. Thank you all. I'm not sure where you heard this from, but it's incorrect. lost+found is for files which become "detached" during fsck. Rather than toss out all the data, they are attached to the lost+found directory with their i-node number as their filename. Yous gots a bad drive... (or possibly controller) Those messages are all inode errors, which means that the FATs don't jibe with what's on the drive... lost+found is some extra space that unices set aside for when the drive gets full. there should be nothing in there unless the drive is filled. that something _does_ show up in there seems indicative that you've got real problems. > -Original Message- > From: Jerry Human [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, June 07, 2000 3:19 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RH 6.2 goes bonkers in 2 days!!! > > Hello RH Guru's: > > I sure hope you can help me with this one. This is purely a C++ programming error. (Pun intended.) In simple terms, a pure virtual function is a class method that is intended to be a placekeeper, but NOT called as provided in the class--the programmer using the class that contains it is expected to provide functional code to accomplish whatever the method is really supposed to do. That message means that, somewhere, a programmer forgot to do this. This _can_ happen because of a mismatch of shared libraries and/or program, but more often someone goofed in the code. Although why it would hit only you--or, at least, you're the only complaint I've seen here--for a piece of distributed software is hard to fathom. Adding new features in the kernel doesn't make a new distro interesting (won't make people buy the new distro); it is, IMHO, the GUI conf tools that are needed in Linux. I know that there are many, as I am using Linuxconf an Webmin: great tools. But none seems managing ldap servers, well. Now, what redhat should do is document its distribution a lot more (what is disabled/not installed with each new distribution) and try to give an easy administration tool instead of using a lot from other people's effort. Also, it seems that "The various BSD-based network services (telnet, finger, talk, rsh, ruers, rwall, tftp) have been split into client and server packages". Well, I hope this will not end with a redhat workstation and a redhat server separate distributions. Fathi Ben Nasr. Jason Pratt a écrit : > Has anyone out there downloaded the 6.2 ISO? Re: RH 6.2?
This does indeed happen on IBM ThinkPad's (at least on the 770 series with the Trident Cyber chipsets). The problem is the VGA server that is used and its settings clash with the LCD screens capabilities resulting in a black screen or just a total mess. Using a kernel with SVGA framebuffer support and a framebuffer X server would actually be a solution for these machines, as the SVGA framebuffer works perfectly on the IBM ThinkPad's (well at least it does on the 600 and 770 series, as those are the models I have tried it with), including high colour depth and high resolutions. My vote would be for using a kernel with SVGA framebuffer support and the framebuffer X server, but then I don't have any machine to worry about with an ATI videocard (as from what I understand the ATI cards have problems with the SVGA framebuffer). It's just a common meeting ground for Red Hat and other Linux users to discuss what's on their minds and to help each other. Without the camaraderie, there is no community. The fact that Red Hat employees post here occasionally is mearly coincidental. They do it because they are, just like us, Linux enthusiasts who like to help people solve problems. Red Hat (the company) hosts the mailing list because it's in their best interests for this community to flourish. 2) Lighten up everyone. We're making progress. PS. I'm really going this time... They are appreciated. It's just that the signal to noise is so high on this list, and I hardly have time to get through it all. I try to contribute as well, and do post an occasional off topic aside though not NEARLY as many as I would like. On more than one occasion I have written what I considered to be a funny post and deleted it rather than send it. There are many people I respect through their posts and would like to get to know better. (I always try to hang out with people smarter than me.) but try not to do too much to add noise. Maybe its jealousy since people seem to know you guys and not poor little ol lonely me here in Tulsa. (There got a personal tidbit in there after all :) Any way, sorry if I was out of line. Probably wouldn't hurt to try, it might contribute to the disorder in any case. The kernel rebuild instructions as I gave them work cleanly and give a kernel identical to the install version _except_ for frame buffering. The problem with laptops, as you know, charles, is that the manufacturers tweak the chipset support to meet their needs & they're not quite the same as their regular chipsets - so the frame buffering is one more complication that I can live without. It didn't break X support on my home system with an Millenium G200 AGP card, but things were a wee bit flakey. So last night, when I compiled a custom kernel, I left the frame buffering out & it seems a bit more stabile. best rickf -- Rick Forrister <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> "To get something done a committee should consist of no more than three people, two of whom are absent." Upgrading 6.1 to 6.2beta broke my pcmcia setup. I honestly don't remember if it was the default setup or not, since I did rebuild the kernel (and installed david hinds' version of card services at some point), but I'm pretty sure it did work out of the box before. I'm pretty sure this is not my problem, but would just like to confirm.. I have a laptop with a Trident Cyber 9397 DVD video card (4 MB). Neither 6.1 or 6.2beta graphical install works. I *can* get X to work later with a few XF86Config tweaks, (the details escape me right now), and my 6.2 text upgrade hasn't finished yet. [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: > What do you mean, you X instal may die ??? > do they install a kernel incompatible whith their X distrib > At what condition will the beast NOT die for sure ? > Philippe Philippe, the problem is apparantly some slightly broken video chipsets, especially with ATI controllers. The _BETA_ has "CONFIG_FB" turned on for frame buffer support, which barfs on those faulty chipsets. After I did the upgrade to RH 6.2B3 (Piglet) from RH 6.1, when X ran all I got was a line of dots at the bottom of the screen. Since I'd been warned about the frame buffer issue I just recompiled the kernel with the specified changes; didn't even have to make any mods to the X configuration, just started X with the recompiled kernel & all was well. I've received an email from inside RH that stated that the "CONFIG_FB" option will be off in the final kernel until the frame buffer questions have been resolved. This _really_isn't_a_problem_! X didn't work on my system with an ATI chipset (Rage Pro 3D), worked fine on my Matrox G200 equipped system. best rickf > Rick Forrester <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: > > has anyone tried 6.2? if so how is it? > > So far, great. Aside from the usual (bug fixes, updated packages) [Not a complete list, just what I remember from the top of my head]: - Support for Docbook-based SGML editing and processing has been added. - The various BSD-based network services (telnet, finger, talk, rsh, ruers, rwall, tftp) have been split into client and server packages. - The ident/auth service, instead of being run from inetd and controlled via /etc/inetd.conf, is run as a standalone service 'identd', and controlled via the /etc/identd.conf file. - The following services no longer run by default, as they have in previous Red Hat Linux releases: - automount daemon amd (package am-utils) - bind name server - dhcpd DHCP server - inn news server - knfsd NFS server - samba CIFS server - apache HTTP server - New packages (a couple of new packages in the main distribution, tons of new packages in powertools) - man pages gziped - better default settings (you can now do less file.gz; ls colorization enabled; when invoked as vim (not vi), vim has colorization and auto- indenting; ...) > Anything new in the kernel? Some of the more important kernel changes: - Updated to 2.2.15pre - Updated nfs patches - Improved PIII support - AGPGART support added on x86 - sigio patch included - bigmem stuff - some driver updates (Compaq Smart2, AMI MegaRAID, ...) - some HA changes LLaP bero -- The first time Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is when they start making vacuum cleaners. -- To unsubscribe: mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe" as the Subject.
