Re: Customizing the reply header

2010-08-22 Thread rm

Hi D.K. and all the others who gave useful tips,
thanks to everybody, it works like a charm.

Just a followup-question: can one also add also
some other header fields from the original posting or message,
for example the email adress and message-Id etc?
Ie. something like:

"On 08/22/2010 05:15 PM, Donald Duck (don...@duck.com) wrote:"

Of course as a European I would also like to have the date/time
in an international format: "2010-08-22 17:15", ie. the above
string should be:

"On 2010-08-22 17:15, Donald Duck (don...@duck.com) wrote:"

Is it possible to customize the header line

(ie. the line which looks like "Donald Duck wrote:"
at top of the reply)

As you can see from my reply line above, I've altered the settings in
prefs.js for a custom header via the following:

A) Type about:config in SM's location bar.
B) Type mailnews in the filter bar to bring up all pref entries
regarding the
mail and news component.
C) See if the pref mailnews.reply_header_type is listed. If so, right click
on it, select Modify, and change the integer value to 3. If the pref isn't
listed, right-click anywhere on the about:config page, select New |
Integer,
and type (or copy/paste) the pref in the blank exactly as above. Then set
the value to 3.
D) Create the following prefs as Strings:
mailnews.reply_header_authorwrote
mailnews.reply_header_ondate
E) Set the two above prefs as you like. For example, here are my settings
that give the above reply line (minus quotes):
"With patience akin to a cat's, %s" (for mailnews.reply_header_authorwrote,
and where %s = author)
"on %s typed" (for mailnews.reply_header_ondate, where %s = date)

The other non-customizable settings for mailnews.reply_header_type are as
follows:

0 = no Reply-Text
1 = "[Author] wrote:"
2 = "On [date] [author] wrote:"

I'm using SM 2.0.6, and obviously my settings work, and should for you.
Please post to the group if you still have set-up questions.

Hope the above gives you what you need --

Re: How to get Reply and Reply To to ignore my email address

I'm still using SeaMonkey 1.1.19 on Windows/XP. For some time now
(I can't remember when this changed) I've enjoyed the feature that
when I reply to an e-mail message, SM knows not to place my e-mail
address in the To: field, even when I'm replying to a message which
I sent.

For example, say I send a message to Fred, and Fred sends a response.
If I reply to Fred's response, it places Fred's e-mail address in the
To: field. However, if I replay to my original message, it knows not
to place me in the To: field, and instead places Fred there.

I really like this feature. I recently installed SM 1.1.19 at my
new office (also running Windows/XP) and can't get it to work that
way. When I reply to a message, it always places the sender in the
To: list, even when it's me.

Check your own email adress(es), maybe there is a typo
in your settings in SM? Because normal Reply should not
put yourself in the reply header (but Reply All should put all there).

And if you Reply to your own original message then
it normally should not put Fred there, but you...

Otherwise, a Q&D manual solution is of course the following method:
you can remove the unwanted recipient from the header:
just pres backspace until the field disappeares...

And you can add other recipients by simply writing
or copying the email adress in the header, ie. just write it
to a new field there...

Beware: I'm talking of newer SM versions, don't know if it was
the same in the 1.1.19 version you use.
I think you better should switch to a newer version.

To correct the link to your website so that it works properly in ALL
browsers (never assume a browser tries a link by adding a forward slash)
just add the slash. You're making more work for ALL servers when you do
leave off the trailing forward slash, because it causes the following to
occur on ALL servers:

1) A physical logging of the action to a file,
2) A redirection to the proper link.

You can still download and install manually here:

For the Plug-in:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

For Active X:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

This comes from the following Adobe page for Troubleshooting

I'm seeing a great amoung of blather in this thread that is quite
contrary to my experience.

First of all, when I go to , the
installation file downloads to whatever folder I specify. It does not
install until I execute that file.

I actually did download Flash 10.1 (actually 10.1.82.76) from that URI
using SeaMonkey 2.0.6 exactly a week ago. I then installed it for
SeaMonkey without any problems. Finally, I archived the installation
file, which I do for ALL software and updates that I download and install.

Note that the installation itself does not involve SeaMonkey. It only
involves executing the installation file. I generally terminate all
other applications while installing new or updated software. I
definitely would not use SeaMonkey's Add-ons Manager since Flash is not
an add-on.

Today, I again downloaded the installation file from the same URI. This
time, I generated both MD5 and SHA1 comparisons between the newly
downloaded file and last week's archived file. The two files are
identical. This means you too should be able to download the file via
SeaMonkey and install it.

Yes, Flash MIGHT set its own cookies. However, you can go to

and set Flash not to set cookies.

email sending

2010-08-22 Thread MikeyM
I got an email from Comcast yesterday that reads in part
'.Customer Security Assurance Notice

Dear Comcast Customer:

Action Taken:
In an effort to help prevent spam and ensure the security of our
network and customers, Comcast has modified your modem’s settings to
prevent the sending of email on port 25. That is the default port
email programs such as Outlook Express use to send email. We’ve taken
this action because we may have detected virus-like activity from your
modem or received reports from other email providers that mail from
your modem generated complaints from their users. Please read this
message to understand how this action may impact your ability to send
email and what you should do next.

Comcast Webmail Users:
If you use a web browser to access your Comcast.net email, this action
will not affect your ability to send or receive e-mail. This action
also does not affect any non-Comcast webmail services.

Email Program Users (Outlook Express, Outlook, MacMail, etc.):
If you use an email program, this action will disable your program’s
ability to send email until you change your email program settings to
send email on port 587. Port 587 uses authentication and is an
industry-recommended alternative to port 25. If you use Outlook
Express and Comcast.net email, Comcast has provided a simple one click
fix for you to use with Internet Explorer. If you use another email
program such as MacMail, Eudora, or Thunderbird, please visit our
client page for information on how to change the settings for sending
email in your email program.

If you are not using Comcast.net email and use another email provider,
please contact your provider for its recommended port settings. Most
email providers offer an alternative to port 25 for sending
email. ...'

I reset the port to the suggested 587, but, it did not work. Any
suggestions?? I am confused.

SM 2.06 on Win 7

2010-08-22 Thread Gerald Ross
My old machine crapped out. My new one is running Windows 7 64bit.
Everything works fine except Weather Gold. The first screen is fine
but when I click to enlarge the map the map never appears, just the
blue screen. It is not my zone alarm or virus checker because it works
just fine using Internet Exploder. I can't find any setup settings

Any ideas?

Yes, in 2.1a2, we have one bug that makes us open multiple copies of it,
and another that makes it appear in the background when you have set
tabs to open in the background by default. Both those bugs should be
fixed in the very-soon-to-come 2.1a3, where it will open only once and
in the foreground.

Tabs?? Is that a Windows thing? On Linux 2.1a2 pops open a big, complex, easy to
understand window which allows me to easily find out that nothing is compatible
with SM 2.1a2. ;-)
Even my themes are all incompatible, and it's using some strange theme anyway.
Well good, hard to run with none.

The odd thing is that both the Fedora13 2.0.6 and the one I downloaded from
mozilla.org tend to crash at odd times, while the 2.1a2 doesn't have most of the

Mikey,

I received the same email a few years back from Comcast on a secondary
computer I was using. I discovered that the reason the computer was
so slow was that it had a few bad viruses/malware attached to it. I
didn't have all the preventions setup on it, and I certainly paid the
price for it.

I'd start out by running Malwarebytes (it's free) and see what you come
up with. It sounds like something definitely took over and its using
your email account to send out emails.

As for the port issue, using port 587 is not a bad thing. I was using
that same port number on my main computer since I found it to be an
acceptable alternative to the main one that was setup by Comcast.

I'd also make sure you lock down the pc with anti-virus/firewall
protection, such as avast (free version) and zone alarm firewall (free
version).

I hope you figure it out.

When 2.1 beta comes out...

2010-08-22 Thread Bill Davidsen
While the behavior of 2.1a2 is fine for an alpha, when the beta comes out I hope
it will be a bit more practical to test, in terms of not being a one way conversion.

Currently it appears that the 2.0.x calendar (Lightning) get changed into
something preventing ever going back. It's not clear if that is only on current
profile or if this is global. Most add-ons don't work, and even those which do,
like password exporter, claim they don't. Themes are incompatible, even the
themes included with the alpha release. I'm not sure what that means, I've been
testing basic functionality.

The point I'm making is that if this is a one-way trip, and once you run 2.1 on
your real profile you need to do a restore from a backup most users don't have
and don't know how to do. This should be VERY carefully documented.

I've been happy, what works seems to work well, be there's bunch which doesn't.

I changed the setting to bypass Compatibility checking so it installs...

They USED to have a web link where you could get the Windows Installer

Yes. It's on the "Global Storage Settings" and "Website Storage
Settings" panels. Move the slider on each to the far left.

It's not intuitive, perhaps because Adobe generally wants Flash cookies
to be allowed. However, if you allow no storage space for cookies, they
cannot be set.

I'm not sure, but Flash 10.1 might not be compatible with SeaMonkey
1.1.17.

Go to your SeaMonkey menu bar and select [Edit > Preferences >
Browser > Downloads]. Please describe the settings for each checkbox
and radio button.

I doubt you'll get any other replies unless you provide a link to
"Weather Gold" and/or explain what it is in detail. Please don't expect
others to be familiar with your application and/or a particular website
in advance.

Windows users can install BetterPrivacy 1.48.2 to control Flash cookies.
I've just installed it so I'm not sure how well it works. Maybe another
Windows user can add something of interest?

And those sites can use the Flash "cookies" to re-create a regular

Is this true in Linux and Mac or only MS versions of windows.

/home//.macromedia/Flash_Player/#SharedObjects/

You can either delete them. Or delete/control them with:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/6623/

Perhaps searcing for *.sol files and deleting all under an 'Adobe'
directory?

The .sol file contains the options you set using the settings manager.
DO NOT delete that file(s).
