I would like to leave, but Paypal has got a firm grip on way too many as things are now. Correct. Sending large sums of cash in an envelope to remote corners of the earth never leaves me with an easy feeling until the money has arrived and the seller tells me so. And while ago I bought some OMD posters from a guy running a reputed OMD fanpage (OMD = Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, a band from the 80s). I sent him the $20 via PayPal, but my posters never got here. After allowing time to see if they still arrive and then all the forth and back with him (he plainly said no to even sharing the loss) I contacted PayPal about it, only to be told that the complaint needs to be filed within four weeks or something. I replied that would be hard for an international user to fulfill and the reply I got then was, between the lines, tough luck, dude. So Stefan again is right: Where to go if you leave PayPal? Re: [SWCollect] Been Awhile, Hasn't It?
Yup, this list switches between frantic activity and solemn silence. Around here, well, I got word from Ken Love, producer at Activision, that they are planning a Zork IV. We've had occasional email contact since then and it looks like it might take off, but it has been awhile. I am also starting to sell the dozen or so Space Quest Collector's Editions I have here via ebay. If any of you are interested, give me a holler. Oh, and we have a damn hot heatwave in Germany. Today we had 36°C, that's 97°F for you on the other side of the big pond. They say we are in for a constant climate change in that direction, meaning in 20 years we can have palms instead of oaks lining streets. Marco C.E. What the hell happened to the FREE ones, is that a bad word now? Anyone else who feels the same way, you're invited to join me, maybe we can start a small vintage software community on BidVille. Seller registration only costs $5.00 for six months, there are NO listing fees and NO final value fees, you get almost twice as long a title for your auction, and you can have auctions up for 30 days with automatic relists. (Oh, you'll still see me bidding on eBay because of the vast selection, but I refuse to pay for their seller services anymore until they get their act together.) Shoppe: I finally got some tall enough shelves for the library room that will house my collection, and am in the process of unpacking and shelving the Shoppe items. (Did I mention I bought a house and moved into it? Can't remember.) You should see an updated list in another week or two, keep watching my news page. You guys've gotta see my library room and my gaming desk, I promise I'll post pictures once everything gets settled. Decided for the time being that I'm going with regular comic-book archival bags for my own collection items. They make larger ones for action figures that I think should hold most of my bigger boxes. Anyone else find any better solutions? I know we were talking about specialized plastic cases for awhile but that never really got anywhere, my cousin's job isn't in plastics at the moment and I haven't had time to research other places that might be willing to make them for us. We agreed that plastic baggies were a 'short-term' solution, and tried to think up another (better) way to preserve our software for the long haul. We agreed on the idea that if we could find some sort of inexpensive, clear, plastic box of the clamshell variety, that would be ideal. I searched the net for anything that would match that description, but came up empty. We thought that if we could have a custom box made to a software collector's exacting specifications, we may be able to have a plastics manufacturer actually create our 'software collector's box in a limited run! So, here are the questions: I already ventured into the idea of preservation some time last year and read some articles on how libraries and antiquaries preserve books. From what I read putting the boxes, which basically are cardboard and paper, into plastic boxes might prove fatal. According to the Library of Congress air circulation should be present: http://www.loc.gov/preserv/presfaq.html If you'd want to pay $1.50 for a plastic shell and order an amount of 1000, you'd might in the long run be better off to invest the money into a humidity and temperature controller, provided you have an extra room for your collection. 2. C.E. and I also spoke of the possibility of a software collector's 'meet and greet' at an agreed upon event. We could get together to swap stories, share a meal, and perhaps even bring along some of our prized collectibles to show to each other! I assume that some of you would be interested in seeing the Museum's original Akalabeth, or our genuine Wing Commander Kilrathi head! If we could make this happen, we could all at least go home with a ROMERO autograph (for a nomial fee, perhaps?) ;) Please let me hear some ideas on locations, dates, and enthusiasms for an idea like this. I've played games like Ultima, and Pool of Radiance, and I liked them to a point, but I got bored with the battles every two minutes. The battles are not incidental, but rather are the main component of the gameplay. A game with this type of gameplay mechanics would not be considered an adventure by any stretch of the imagination. You know I'm all for drawing a line between RPGs and Adventures, but is the focus of the former really on fighting? It usually is a component of a RPG, but the focus? Re: [SWCollect] King's Quest 1
Jim Leonard schrieb: At MobyGames we go over this every so often; people keep wanting to somehow *define* the words adventure game to mean Sierra games (the Quest games, etc.) Well, I can imagine. I remember having vivid discussions over at comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.adventure over this http://www.gamingnexus.com/article.asp?ID=2 and this http://fourfatchicks.com/Rants/Commentary/Contemplation.shtml article with the respective editors. When you read through them you'll note that for these people adventure gaming started with Sierra and Lucas. Before that was nothing. Beside documenting pretty much ignorance from people who publish articles, this also shows that there still is no public appreciation for the roots of computer gaming, not even among those who like to play games. Old movies are considered classics and are watched, old games are just obsolete. Except for, well, us and a few others. Others want to actually create a new genre specifically for Sierra-like games. As official taxonomer for MobyGames, they will forever remain in our system as what they really are: Interactive Fiction with Graphics. This puts them in the same category as Mask of the Sun, Arthur: The Quest for Excalibur, etc. Because when you get down to it, all of the games Sierra put out from 1984 to 1991 that required text input are exactly that -- interactive fiction with graphics. The text parser may be bad, but it's still a parser and still required to complete the game. Entrance into a new room/area doesn't always print out a text description, but you do get text updates of events/locations/dialogue. So it's a gimmicky variant. Well, yes, as a matter of fact that would be correct. Would you put the later Sierra adventures, which were entirely mouse driven IIRC, and those from Legend in the same category? The earliest games I can remember that today would fit the description of a 3D adventure because of their gameplay and use of 3D graphics in the current definition of the term are Mercenary from Novagen and Cholo from Firebird. Jim Leonard schrieb: The cutoff was about 6 months ago; I haven't seen anything large since that time. Around here, in Germany, it was 12-18 months ago. EA was the first to announce that cardboard boxes are outdated and subsequently published new games only in DVD cases. Others followed shortly after. Boxes around here were never as fancy as those in the US, but now it is at the point where I have to seriously question the advantage of buying an original versus downloading a game from the net, esp. considering that mostly inadequate tiny manuals are cramped into the case. Even with most complicated games like Operation Flashpoint. Interestingly, although the manufacturing costs for manuals and packaging probably dropped considerably after this strategy, the prices for games stayed the same and with the introduction of the Euro even increased by roughly $5. I really, really hated the small box decision -- more than you know. Heh, at least you still get boxes! :-) But if you want to look at it in a positive light, most small boxes are completely useless for manuals, so it prompts more companies to produce a Collector's Edition with trinkets/feelies, maps, manuals, and unique packaging. (Whether or not these intentionally-mass-produced versions are more collectable than the standard ones is a subject for another debate :-) Although the collector's editions usually cost considerably more. If we take into light that that was just about what Infocom did for *regular* games, which as well provided them with a neat copy protection, it is a little ironic where things end up now. Re: [SWCollect] Our Mission
I once had this case where a young lady from England tried to sell a couple of Infocom games via ebay.com. I stumbled across them and lo and behold, the pictures she used were taken from my Infocom site. Now, I don't really have a problem with people using my scans, provided they a) ask me before they do and b) make the bidders aware the image does not show the actual item. The latter because most of my images are heavily retouched to give perfect appearances - it would severely mislead buyers about the condition of the actual box sold. Trying to play nice I got in contact with the young lady first, and made her aware that I'm aware. She denied using my images. So I filed a complaint with ebay and after some forth and back and finally having me swear that the images are indeed mine and that in the case I lie devastating punishments would fall upon me, ebay removed the auctions. Young lady relisted her items with the small addition item relisted due to picture copyright issues and they unfortunately then went unsold. The previous bidders did not feel inclined to bid again. Lesson to learn: Ebay is *not* powerless and what holds true for pictures is also true for text. Both fall under copyright law if they are your original work. To prevent future incidents like this I now stamped most of my images with my URL and because of the growing number of people remote linking my images I started to block hits on them via .htaccess, when the referring URL does not come from my domain. Marco Chris Newman schrieb: That brings up a good question. How do you prevent someone from listing auctions whose sellers have stolen your write-up? I've had characters not only lift my ads but actually link to my webhosted site to use my box scans and screenshots! G! What can you do to stop this? Thanks Chris, much appreciated! Marco C.E. Forman schrieb: Since several of you have asked, here is the eBay searches script. I've added comment notes for how to customize it for your own use. If your ISP does not have PHP, you will not be able to use this, though it shouldn't be too hard to customize for Perl or any other web scripting language. Due to eBay's max of 100 search results per page, any results beyond that will be left out. For best results, make your searches as specific as possible. (Remember, you're no longer limited to eBay's 20 saved.) The more searches you do, the longer the script will run. I feed it about 60 complex searches, and it takes 2 - 3 minutes before displaying anything. This is normal. If there are no matches, nothing will be printed, not even a no matches found. Occasionally it may print the search header but nothing else. This happens when the only auction(s) matching that search already matched a previous one (it filters out duplicates so you don't have to look at the same auction twice, but prints the search header at the start of the loop). Please note that I am not looking to officially support this script in any capacity: If you modify it, or if eBay changes the layout of their HTML search results, you will be on your own. Have fun! Re: [SWCollect] How to preserve them?
Thank you for the long answer, Alexander. As you apparently are from Germany, too, could you tell me where around here I can find suitable mylar covers? To be honest, I never before heard about mylar. Marco Alexander Zoller schrieb: In my opinion the acid problem, while certainly a long-term threat, can be neglected. Admittedly those games weren't produced with archival durability in mind, but they should still survive a period of 50-60 years without any such corroding effects becoming apparent. I have a bunch of books and documents from the 19th Century, and they still are all in fairly good shape. High humidity and direct sunlight are factors that will speed up the ageing process, but they can be omitted rather easily. The bigger problem as I see it is the constant exposure to oxygen and dust, which results in the much deprecated color loss and yellowing of the paperwork. Take Silver Age comics for example. Most are still in sound condition, the paper hasn't suffered any fatal structural damage. However, yellowing/tanning and color loss can ruin the impression of an otherwise fine copy. I'm currently storing most of my vintage software in mylar covers with air holes, to expose them to as little air and dust as possible while maintaining a necessary minimum of air exchange. The more you give them a chance to breath, the more smell they will absorb, and the quicker the paperwork tends to tan. Lastly, certain type of shrinkwrap appears to be extremely susceptible to dust, making it brittle within just a few years, even when other ageing factors such as UV light have been avoided. Again a secondary plastic cover seems to be best to avoid this. /Alexander -- This message was sent to you because you are currently subscribed to the swcollect mailing list. [SWCollect] How to preserve them?
Hello fellow collectors, although I keep my games at fairly adequate environmental conditions (smokefree, no direct sunlight, etc.) I notice that they are working. Some manuals have a sweet smell to them, even on those games that I originally purchased and that were always kept under the conditions above. What I fear is that in the long run, say 20 or 30 years, the paper of the manual and boxes will start to crumble due to the acid in it. I know that there's now way to save the disks, but this really worries me. To make long things short, what do you do to prevent that? I already had a look at what libraries do about that, but affording a vault in the basement with a humidity and a temperature controller is a little beyond my financial boundaries.
