[OSM-talk] IMPORTANT - OSM API upgrade - Read Only access mode from 09:00 UTC Fri 17th April
Dear OpenStreetMap Users, This weekend sees the long awaited upgrade of our main API from version API 0.5 to API 0.6. This is a major development for the project and involves upgrades to both the hardware platform (the main OSM database) as well as the software that we all use to communicate with it. In order to migrate the existing OSM database to the new server and software platform it is necessary to lock the OSM database to Read Only access, that means you will not be able to upload your new map edits to OSM once the current API is in read only mode. Read only access will commence at 09:00 UTC Friday 17th April 2009 and is expected to last throughout the API upgrade period. Completion of the API upgrade and database migration is scheduled for some time on Monday April 20th, however the exact time will depend upon how well progress goes over the weekend. It is also highly likely that there will be periods of total API downtime during the weekend as the upgrade is progressed. The front page of the wiki will be your best place to keep an eye on the current status, or hang out in IRC at #OSM for hour by hour news, but please keep your questions to a minimum as our sysadmins team will be busy! Concrete news updates, when they are available, will be published. The technical working group and the full API 0.6 development team have worked long and hard to deliver this exciting new upgrade to the OSM platform. I am sure you will wish to join me in thanking them all for their efforts and contribution to date and wish them the very best with the work over this weekend. For more information about the changes please see the following wiki page: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Protocol_Version_0.6/Information Translation If you have not seen this message on your local language mainling list or forum please help communicate to the wider audience by translating and posting on. So if you have ids sparsely distributed then it allocates a lot of memory for just a few nodes and there's a lot of wasted space. Re: [OSM-talk] Aerial Photographs (was: People's Map)
A local man used a radio-controlled glider tp photograph our village and an archaeological dig a couple of miles away. One problem with RC planes is that they are unstable in the air because of their short wing-span, so the camera points left and right wildly. A glider has much longer wingspan and is more stable laterally. The glider used has a small electric motor to get it into the air and worked quite well for general shots of the area but to use it to systematically photograph a wide area is an unthinkable difficult task for any usefully big area. The height restriction is AGL, not MSL or you could never fly slope soarers in the Pennines. :-) Cheers, Chris Eric Wolf wrote: RC airplanes aren't cheaper for two reasons: 1. Selecting good shots and correcting the imagery for hundreds of images ends up costing more than the difference in operating an RC plane and a regular aircraft. 2. RC airplanes crash - often - and they aren't cheap. Sure, regular airplanes are more expensive but they don't crash as often. A decent RC rig will set you back $1000+ - not counting the camera. I used balloons and blimps to do low-altitude aerial photography in my MS thesis. They are much cheaper than RC planes to operate because they don't crash (as easily). But you also don't have as much control. They work really well for taking low-altitude obliques for general documentation processes. But for creating a basemap of aerial imagery, you need to get above the 500 ft MSL barrier put in place by the FAA. To do this, you have to be in an airplane piloted by a licensed pilot. [OSM-talk] Local Chapter Working Group Update - Looking for Volunteers
Hello, The Local Chapters Working Group is looking for volunteers to help drive the local chapters process through to completion. Since late last year the group has been working to set up local OSM-F chapters that will represent the OSM-F in local territories. Local Chapters give local OSM groups the opportunity to officially represent the OSM-F: they can use the OSM logos and web domains and officially represent the OSM-F to companies, governments and media. You can find out more about Local Chapters here: http://www.blacksworld.net/blog/2008/12/11/osm-f-update-local-chapters-are-coming/ The next phase of work for the Local Chapters Group will involve opening more discussions with potential local leaders and members. We want to make sure that the Local chapters work to help the people on the ground organize mapping and OpenStreetMap activities more effectively. To carry this out, we need help from some volunteers who can dedicate 2-4 hours a week over the next 6 weeks to get in touch with potential local leaders and members. If can offer you time to call, email and engage in dialogue with OSMers around the world, and then work with the Local Chapters Group to refine the current draft, please get in touch with me (n...@osmfoundation.org). If you are a local leader or community member who's been in contact with me or the Local Chapters group recently - we'll be getting back in touch soon. If you have not had a chance to give you opinion, or if you have any more questions, please get in touch. Joe, I guess it depends upon how much data you want. There must be some slow burn loggers that would do it but probably trackpoint spacing might be high. Personally I'd probably go with a rugged eTrex, a modern one with an SD card to carry the daily traces it writes. My legend will last all day on a pair of rechargeable AA's (2500's or above) so you would just need to carry a few sets of fully charged AA's to get you through. You could then have tracks at 1 sec interval for the whole of your trek. The HCx is a bit cheaper but the 60CSx has a screen that's a bit larger and better readable without the backlight on (which saves battery life). Both are very sturdy outdoor GPS devices with high sensitivity receiver, micro-SD card for maps and unlimited tracklogs, color screen. The HCx is a bit cheaper but the 60CSx has a screen that's a bit larger and better readable without the backlight on (which saves battery life). With good batteries you should be able to get about 20 hours between charges. I notice that my NiMH batteries (Ansmann 2700mAh) perform worse when it's cold, so maybe normal Alkaline batteries might be better in cold environments. The Vista HCx is plenty readable with the backlight off. Where it's most difficult is in shade or under cloudy conditions. The HCx has better battery life than the 60 CSx, too (maybe 24 hours vs. 16 for ~2500 mAh NiMH batteries), and lithium batteries perform the best in cold weather. Both NiMH and alkalines drain fast in the cold. Lithiums also have higher capacity than either. However, they're not rechargeable, unfortunately. The one that saves lots and lots of files (and sometimes gets the filesystem corrupt in the process) is the NaviGPS. If you need relief contours on your Garmin, you could try GroundTruth (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GroundTruth) - it generates contours from NASA's SRTM data (you'll get contours like these: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=29.817lon=85.091zoom=10layers=00B0FTF). There are some holes in the data though, so don't rely too much on them. You can then combine these contour maps with other Garmin maps (contour maps are transparent). Make sure you test it in the cold though, as noted before, recharchable batteries especially tend to work worse in cold weather. Doesn't mean they won't work, just that you'll get maybe half the life out of them. If you are going to use good alkaline batteries, don't expect them to be easily available anywhere except maybe Kathmandu. Cheap batteries will be readily available, but they will be crap quality. You generally need to find a store that aims specifically at higher class customers before you will find good batteries. This is a general rule through most of Asia, I find. Re: [OSM-talk] Aerial Photographs (was: People's Map)
RC airplanes aren't cheaper for two reasons: 1. RC airplanes (and any civilian-operated UAV) has significant flight restrictions - distance and altitude. Flying at low altitude (under 500 feet MSL), you end up with a higher spatial resolution but you have to stitch together many more images to cover the same extent as a single image taken from an aircraft flying at, say, 2000 feet MSL. Selecting good shots and correcting the imagery for hundreds of images ends up costing more than the difference in operating an RC plane and a regular aircraft. Re: stitching together many images. Is not this a software and automation issue? In the future, can we expect this process to become completely automated and therefore cheap? nick *** WARNING: This e-mail (including any attachments) may contain legally privileged, confidential or private information and may be protected by copyright. I think that we should try to engage every council in the land with a supposedly innocuous question about road naming and OSM, in the attempt ot get them interested in the project. I will either e-mail or write to Queanbeyan Council with the vitally important question as to whether OSM should have a Magruerita Street or a Margeurita Street. Vielleicht Track Grade 1 (Paved track or *heavily compacted hardcore*)?
April 2009 12:28:45 MESZ An: t...@openstreetmap.org Betreff: [OSM-talk] IMPORTANT - OSM API upgrade - Read Only access mode from 09:00 UTC Fri 17th April Dear OpenStreetMap Users, This weekend sees the long awaited upgrade of our main API from version API 0.5 to API 0.6.
