[OSM-talk] wiki tag page template: ways vs areas vs relations
Hi List, all tag pages on the wiki have a sidebar[1] that tells which element (node, way, area, relation) the tag applies to. Since an area is either a closed way or a multipolygon relation, my understanding has always been that if a tag is only meant for an area (for example most landuse tags), it shouldn't be documented as usable on ways and relations in general. In other words, for that template's usecase, ways/area/relations are separate sets, despite sharing primitives. Is that everyone else's understanding too ? In that case, I'll mention that fact in the template's documentation, and keep an eye out for misdocumented tags. Which relation types are actually meant with the relation setting in this template? I think they are better than nothing. Your arguments work for about everything in OSM. Because we have so much freedom in OSM we can always throw our hands in the air and say: This is all so complex and there is no way I can ever describe the complexity so lets give up. And only because in theory we can invent new relation types all the time, in practice there is often no software that uses them, so telling the user that they can do everything they want just doesn't make any sense. For phone booths, everybody uses nodes, everybody understands that, the software understands that. For practical purposes this is what we do and what we document. Of course all these things change over time and maybe somebody it will be common place to do it differently, but thats what we have now and what we should document. Maybe we should have a tool that compares object counts for the different types from taginfo with the wiki documentation and complain if they seem to be out of whack? Main problem there is that taginfo doesn't know about areas, but only about ways and relations. 2014-10-07 14:21 GMT+02:00 Jochen Topf joc...@remote.org: For phone booths, everybody uses nodes, everybody understands that, the software understands that. For practical purposes this is what we do and what we document. actually I think that the software (i.e. osm-carto) does also understand and render amenity=telephone on an area. What do you suggest, remove it from the style or correct the wiki? Are site-relations established? There are 134000 of them in the data. I didn't search for particular errors for the 3 examples I gave before, I just looked at 3 arbitrary pages and all had issues. I now looked at the most basic tag we have, the highway-tag. The wiki states you cannot use it on areas, but it is documented elsewhere to do it (area=yes and highway=*) and the common renderer does render it. On the other hand, highway on a node doesn't make sense for a lot of highways (all those that are actually ways). http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Highway I think that we could remove this template and have no problems, quite the opposite, it would remove lots of lots of omissions and wrong classifications in the docu. Many tags are useful on different objects, but the semantics will vary based on this. E.g. a barrier=hedge can be mapped on a (linear, open) way or on an area. In the first case you'd maybe add a width, in the second case you shouldn't. For landuse nodes are not allowed, but there are 220.000 of these in the data. For buildings, only areas are allowed, but there is a building relation that many people do use. There are also 758.000 nodes with a building tag (while not useful for rendering, it could still make some sense to map like this, e.g. to add additional detail beside the geometry, stuff like a name etc.) cheers, Martin ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] wiki tag page template: ways vs areas vs relations
The wiki is not in great shape (arguably in worse shape than the osm data itself), but if less than perfect data was a blocker, OSM would never have goten off the ground. The wiki is the 2nd most important source of OSM docs, after all the in-editor stuff. It should be well cared for. Tools to cross-check the wiki against taginfo, presets, validators, etc would be great. Discrepancies would need to be checked manually, as no source is authoritative. It'd be great to have more machine-parseable data in the wiki, for example if a tag is sensitive to way direction or if it expects other tags to be present. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Hi Andy, actually no, it's currently not possible to query other sources. The only thing that's possible is to define a bounding box and using the Map() method of osampi to get everything that's inside that boundary. Hi, On Mon, Oct 06, 2014 at 06:48:58AM +0200, Marc Gemis wrote: After 3.5 years and 34.000 addresses, I have to admit that an import is the only way to get addresses in OSM fast. I have done the same amount of Adresses and meanwhile my area is more or less complete. I think of imports as beeing a huge turn away for new mappers. NL looks great and complete on the first glance when looking at the map. Digging deeper shows a significant lack of POIs, errors in road networks, missing roads and topology changes which happened after 2008. Tons of missing highway=service, footway, cycleway, path or mistagged roads. But there wont be any mappers correcting this as it LOOKS correct. For me large parts of the rural NL looks unmaintained. Large parts of the map havent been touched since the AND import. Compared to the area where i live. EVERY single street has been touched 10-20 times in the same timeframe. It got better, corrected, value-added with tags like lit, maxspeed, surface, width, access etc. Nothing like this has happened in the NL because it looked complete. Another, related question is how do you want to deal with updates on BAG data now. Can a (tourist) mapper change the building outline or remove it ? Or will it be reverted with the next BAG update when the change is not reported back to BAG ? That's what I've read on the forum when I reported the mistake. I wont touch buildings and addresses. I did map some buildings and addresses in Breskens in 2010 and 2013. Thats all gone now - most likely replaced by better data - but still a demotivating process. hi, On Mon, Oct 06, 2014 at 08:36:47AM +0200, Marc Gemis wrote: I didn't say anybody claim that. I'm just wondering whether it failed. So far we haven't seen a country that is capable to add the same amount of address data by crowd-surfing as the imports in Denmark or The Netherlands. So how many mappers do we need to add the same amount of address data in a reasonable timeframe ? Is this number feasible ? We dont need to - OSM is about crowdsourcing. As soon as adresses get more important people start adding them. This is what happens now. We took care about road network for getting routability. We started adding buildings for the look of the map. Now we discover the lack of geocoding capabilities we start adding Addresses. Google is also missing between 10-20% of the German Adresses. They interpolate and guess where necessary. How long will users accept that missing data ? Will they switch to OSM navigation without that data ? Yes they will and they did already. I have tons of friends which i showed Mapfactor Navigator and all of them use it because it is a GREAT tool showing OSM capabilities. We lived without addresses in navigational devices for a long time. The first TomToms did only sporadically contain address informations. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but when I read that there are thousands of paid employees that keep the BAG up-to-date, how can the current mapping population in Belgium handle this ? The thousands of people do a lot more than what WE need. Just because there is much more data than mappers can handle by surveys. You seem to overestimate the correctness of municipal Data. Its the same bullshit everywhere. I have access to more than OSM Datasets and they are broken as OSM is - in different aspects but still they are. When you have 2 Datasets of addresses you most likely will have 10-20% of Addresses you cant easily match in the other Dataset. I'm not saying OSM as an open database is failing. I just think the survey+map model requires many more people than we'll ever find. You are too impatient and you fail to see the great results we already produced. OSM is the most valuable GeoDataset available worldwide. There are hundrets of services using OSM in production already. Addresses is the last big thing we miss for example in Germany.
2. [Talk-it] Trasferimento dati RT
[Talk-it] Fwd: [OSM-dev] Release openstreetmap-carto v2.22.0
From: Matthijs Melissen i...@matthijsmelissen.nl Date: 2014-10-06 20:55 GMT+02:00 Subject: [OSM-dev] Release openstreetmap-carto v2.22.0 To: d...@openstreetmap.org, OpenStreetMap t...@openstreetmap.org Dear all, Today, v2.22.0 of the openstreetmap-carto stylesheet has been released and rolled out to the openstreetmap.org servers. It might take up to 48 hours before all tiles show the new rendering. Changes include: * Major changes in landcover labelling. Landcover labels are now rendered oblique, and in the colour of the landuse they belong to. The minimum zoom level on which the labels appear, as well as their font size, now depends on the size of the landcover object. All rendered landcover labels now have their name rendered. The new rendering might highlight tagging errors, so all mappers are invited to inspect their local area for possible problems. Note that adding the name tag to the landuse area rather than to a node generally yields better results. * Changes in island and islet labelling. Islets (place=islet) now have their name rendered. The minimum zoom level on which islands and islets appear now depends on the island/islet size. The area size can only be used when the island/islet is tagged as area, not as point, so tagging islands/islets as area is recommended. Note that smaller place=island objects can now be retagged as place=islet without losing their label in the main renderer. * Bus stops now have their name rendered. * Apart from bridge=yes, we now also render the bridge keys boardwalk, cantilever, covered, low_water_crossing, movable, trestle, and viaduct. When applicable, bridges can now be retagged using the correct key. * Ferries now have their name rendered (when applicable), and overlapping ferry lines now look better. * Gates are no longer rendered on zoom level 15. * Streams, ditches and drains are now rendered slightly wider. * Long place names are now wrapped. * Aerodrome names are now wrapped. * Various bug fixes. For a full list of commits, see https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/compare/v2.21.0...v2.22.0 . [Talk-it] Latitudine e longitudine OSM
45.9673584, 10.8326034 Chiedo lumi. -- Matteo Quatrida GNU/Linux User #498939 OpenStreetMap Mapper «Be GREEN and keep it on your SCREEN!» ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it
Re: [Talk-it] Latitudine e longitudine OSM
/alessandro ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Re: [Talk-cat] ADF Baix Llobregat i OpenStreetMap
Tu as vérifié l'état du rond-point ?

From: Matthijs Melissen i...@matthijsmelissen.nl Date: Mon, Oct 6, 2014 at 8:55 PM Subject: [OSM-talk] Release openstreetmap-carto v2.22.0 To: d...@openstreetmap.org, OpenStreetMap t...@openstreetmap.org Dear all, Today, v2.22.0 of the openstreetmap-carto stylesheet has been released and rolled out to the openstreetmap.org servers.
