[talk-ph] Recording POI's with a camera
Hi, You probably know this already, but I only discovered it a few weeks ago. I knew if you had a digital camera with GPS that you could load pictures from it into JOSM and the would apear at the correct location on the map. What I did not realize was that you can also use a digital camera even if it doesn't have a built in GPS receiver. This is because the camera records the time that the picture was taken. To make this work you need to start your GPS recording. Then just take photo's of any POI's that take your fancy. When you get home load the recorded track into JOSM. Then right click on the GPS layer (in the layer list), and import the photo's you took on the trip. The POI photo's are then imported at the correct location on the map. If the locations are slightly off, they can be manually adjusted, by adjusting the time offset. This could save a lot of note taking on mapping parties, as you could just take a photo of a road, and later use that to enter details of road type, surface type, etc. I find this technique works well riding shotgun in a car when on some mundane trip to the supermarket,as it enables me to record subdivision names, road names, etc without having to stop at each location. Re: [talk-ph] Recording POI's with a camera
This is also a reason to delete the EXIF and other meta-data should be removed from photos you are placing in pulic sites, If you have left a track or the GPS location is recored the people can know where you took the photo, EG:Exactly where your house is.. Note this is more important on your mobile phones with the share option. They could record the GPS on the photo, of your new lovely house, now everyone in the world knows exactly where you live.. [OSM-talk] Named passages on hiking paths
Hi, I'd like to get advice about toponymy in the context of hiking paths. When hiking, I often encounter short technical passages which have a name painted on the rock. In French, the name almost always begin with Pas de ... but I'm not sure if there is a good translation for pas in English [1]. Such portions of the path often consist in passing a small cliff or an exposed ridge, they may be equipped with chains or cables. I think it is good to have these passages in OSM because they can be considered as a mark or a step along the hiking route. My problem is that I can't find a proper tagging scheme. I could put the name on the path segment [2] but that would often conflict with the name of the path (if any) [3]. Also, it doesn't convey the idea of a step along the path. Another solution is to use the place=locality [4] but that would mean that a named place exists with a path going though. Here, I think the name is for the technical passage (part of the path), not the place. There would be no name if there were no path. Moreover, such a place name is mostly relevant to hikers whereas place=locality is not specific. Eventually, I used a custom tag for my latest edit: hiking=passage [5] but I'm not sure this can make sense for other mappers and I'm looking for feedback on this. The Hillary Step appears to be a vertical rock face which needs to be ascended on the way to summit: it is thus analogous to a step or stair (as in a flight of stairs). I think the kind of 'Pas' being mentioned in the original posting is something that is traversed horizontally rather than vertically. 'Pas' does indeed mean 'step' (i.e. a movement taken in walking), and by extension a 'place through which one may pass in order to get from one place to another', in which sense it can be applied to sea-straits as well as to tricky portions of a path on land. I think the OP's problem is a particular example of a more general problem, of tagging a particular stretch of a way with a specific name which doesn't negate the name of the way as a whole. You get that with terraces, parades, etc. on roads, with reaches of a river, and no doubt with other features as well. -- Steve ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[Talk-de] Aktion Strassen-Routing in Japan möglich?

Secondo me è comunque terreno ad uso agricolo. Re: [Talk-it] mappare landuse=farmland

The Bing road detect API (magicshop.cloudapp.net) is an experimental service bing has announced. It can automatically derive street vector data from Bing aerial imagery. Given a start and end point, the service will perform image processing to attempt to recognise the position of a road, and return vector data for it. (Vectorisation) This a process which OpenStreetMap mappers do manually quite a lot, and so the service could potentially be a big time saver when it comes to that particular type of mapping. An important thing to note however, is that this sketching of aerial imagery is only one type of mapping, and the more efficient we are at doing it, the more like an automated import it becomes. For best results we should try to combine it with other mapping techniques, and think about ways of building a community of local on-the-ground mappers. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Bing_road_detect_API -- Por favor, no me envíe documentos con extensiones .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .mdb, mdbx OpenOffice es libre: se puede copiar, modificar y redistribuir libremente.
Hej Jonas, Godt initiativ. Herved opnår vi to ting: 1.

- http://GEOlink.es -- View this message in context: http://gis.638310.n2.nabble.com/Importacion-Nomenclator-tp6160724p6169417.html Sent from the Spain mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[Talk-ca] CommonMap in Canada
Hi all, I just wanted to let you know that the CommonMap initiative is still alive, as am I. To recap, CommonMap will be a collaboration and repository of liberally-licensed geodata (without share-alike) - accessible though an OpenStreetMap-style interface. We will accept Creative Commons Attribution, CC0 and public domain geodata contributions, depending on your jurisdiction. We expect it will find fresh acceptance in the Gov 2.0 movement, since it allows governments to redistribute contributions from the community. We also are quite happy to accept OpenStreetMap contributors who find themselves dissatisfied with its default licence. We want to focus on a particular country at first, which is Canada. Why? * It has quite a comprehensive open data catalogue; * It appears to have a compatible licence; * It also has a rigorous foreign key model, which bodes well for roundtripping back to government; * It's the home of Refractions Research, the custodian of PostGIS which is a good friend of mine; * Finally, it helps that Sam Vekemans is our enthusiastic man on the ground over there. We want to get as much of Natural Resources Canada's GeoBase and Canvec publications into the CommonMap database as we can, and use Canada as a showcase country for what CommonMap can uniquely do. The proof of concept API instance is currently at http://api.development.i386.commonmap.org/ It is hosting an overlay of: * Natural Earth Data; * Some sample Geobase National Road Network, National Hydro Network and Land Cover datasets. (Hint: look up Victoria, British Columbia[1] for an example of all 3 datasets together.) Next comes the challenge of ramping up to a public launch. The core of CommonMap is a web-facing API and its one true database, a download site for XML full copies of that database, and a map tile server with its optimised database. To run this at public scale will demand about 8-10 CPU cores and associated storage, or about US $10,000 per year. Let's face it, we will require a higher rate of donations to do this. If you believe in the idea of CommonMap, a good way to show your support is to donate to CommonMap Inc. (CommonMap Inc is the non profit body that operates the CommonMap internet resources.) Potential donors, please head this way: http://www.commonmap.org/page/donate Even if you can't spare the cash, perhaps you can spare your skills or tools, whether they be in geodesy, obtaining or converting geodata imports, running up database or tile servers, or developing applications? Let us know. Please feel free to forward this news to whoever you wish. I welcome all comments: You can make further enquires by return email, the commonmap.org website, or CommonMap at LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter. Sam Vekemans also has a group blog for CommonMap set up at Posterous.
