Re: [Talk-us] Why?
Martin Koppenhoefer writes: Yes, I'm saying the same things. In particular, if you ask me about these huge landuse polygons in Escondido, I don't particularily like them. I like detailed mapping, and I believe as soon as someone starts to map the details he'll have to split these polygons into smaller ones in order to keep maintainability. I don't suggest to make them multipolygons and to exclude stuff, this would become a nightmare very soon. I appreciate the feedback, Martin. Your don't particularly like them is duly and respectfully noted by me and others here. I like detailed mapping, too. I also accept correct mapping, even if it might only be mediocre or even crude, though it must be correct, where that is a little bit fuzzy (yes, it is, in a project with consensus). I accept mediocre as a good first draft or acceptable early version. Others, less so. I have found satisfaction (perhaps an approach) to this is to improve such data myself, especially with wider discussion. I have fixed messy map from no, quality is much too low, I must do something about it (and do) to excellent map. So, here we are again, perhaps. We (in the USA) also see significant areas of our map remain desert, (sparsely mapped) perhaps (and only partly, among vast other reasons) because of how much effort it is to map in a detailed manner. I don't wish deserts to remain if someone can make them bloom. However, this doesn't mean spilling buckets of paint in sloppy mechanical fashion because a kiddie (novice editor, especially w.r.t. OSM community standards) wants to run a script. We have seen this and it is not pretty. Teachable moments occur here if we insist upon high quality and make instruction accessible and workable -- tenets of OSM. This can be as big an OSM topic as we might like. We can and should keep open ears as to good, better and best methods of we have only rough data now, here are steps to improve them. Done clearly, this is proven to be a helpful approach to a better map. High quality data are often an artful edge between as simply as is needed to describe them and as detailed as we might like them to be. High quality is to be strived for, and when not achieved, an opportunity to improve. We can grease the skids of mediocre data being improved with some effort. Nobody wants nightmare data, but even if you shudder at mediocre data, it is opportunity. First somebody comes along and plows the field, then somebody comes along and plants some seeds and then somebody comes along and tends the garden. It doesn't always work like that everywhere, but it does work like that. Detailed mapping truly is longer work, and we shouldn't discourage early work if quick and crude, though accurate. Or should we? What have we learned from TIGER? In the case of landuse= (residential) polygons, we might agree that a novice volunteer using a more entry level editor like iD who draws such a polygon around her neighborhood in a crude but accurate fashion is acceptable. We might also importantly add, going forward (as areas get peer-reviewed -- what happens) helpful hints that nodes of this polygon shouldn't be merged in with highways, that if an edge goes along a road to exclude the road and other such good OSM data entry practice as makes sense in the overlap of folks doing this sort of editing. There could be more of that, but it can be difficult to make that magically appear in the mind of a novice editor as it might be presented. There could be a lot more of such magic in OSM, yet OSM works right now. I look forward to more, good design coming to fruition. I like to think that some discussion of how happens here, at least in a cursory way. I've seen truly detailed residential mapping where each edge of each outer parcel boundary stops exactly at the polygon tagged landuse=residential -- right down to highly accurate beautiful geometry around a cul-de-sac (for example). Welcome in OSM with open arms! Let's ask ourselves: do we want to encourage Vicki Volunteer to draw a landuse=residential polygon around her neighborhood, if she has good knowledge of it (and imagery, and editing facility and hints whispered in her ear where it makes sense...) to enter it? I do, even if results are mediocre or even crude (I wince, I accept). Only, however, if we agree they are correct. I don't want to miss capturing that because she is daunted by perfection of detail. OSM is stepwise. These can be difficult: to discuss, to agree, to disagree, to reach consensus, to improve the map, to judge quality, to build good context-sensitive editor tools... but we must do them anyway. Let's make more paths for curious novices to become intermediates (and intermediates experts -- even harder!), emphasizing quality data entry: skills and knowledge required. We do so now, certainly. And we grow the map as we build even more of these into the

Re: [Talk-us] Mappy hours questionnaire
Here are my takeaways: 1. The current time slot doesn't work for a about 40% of you. :( More on that below. 2. About half of you would like a theme or a presentation for each Mappy Hour. 3. Quite a few folks had not really heard of the Mappy Hours or don't know what they are / what to expect. Here's what I will do: * On timing - there's not going to be a slot that works for everyone - but 40% is a lot. I got some feedback that earlier in the day would be better for some. I will plan the next few Mappy Hour earlier in the day to see if that does in fact work better. * I will write a blog post / diary entry to spread the word about the Mappy Hours more. * I will be relying on y'all to submit presentation / theme ideas for the Mappy Hours. Everyone is welcome to present something - be it mapping progress, a tagging proposal, software you're working on, an event you're organizing... I will include a call for presentations in each invite. * I will send out the Mappy Hour reminder emails further in advance. Let me know if there's anything else you would like to see happen. I'm happy to import *JUST the six notes* if that's preferred, without any node (the node and note are linked in other countries). That's an extra step for the local mapper however. I have actually mapped one of these but have refrained from adding information about the manufacturer for fear that my ground survey will be obliterated by this import. There's no reason to fear. For @SK53 you can safely add brand : this is not an obliterating type of import, it's a conflation. No ground survey data is at risk: quite the contrary ground survey is needed and wanted. For example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/note/324309 http://www.openstreetmap.org/note/324440 This import is exactly analogous to checking an electronic list of open Tesco locations against those mapped in OSM, except here the list is OdBL licenced. Beyond that, I've reached out to each of the (known to me) vendors of this type of station, offering up OSM as a place to record tool stand locations. I have no commercial relationship with any of them. http://guides.obviously.com/Public-Bicycle-Work-and-Repair-Stands-2/1925 --- So: an import of NOTES instead, with no underlying node data? ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb
[Talk-de] GMaps-Import in Algerien?
[talk-ph] AH26, DPWH Route Numbers on Primary Secondary Roads
DPWH's new Route numbers appearing in http://goo.gl/vGknWx (shortened URL) went blank as of yesterday (March 5) - except for Expressways Route numbers. Re: [OSM-talk-be] Helping out OpenStreetMap Belgium Working Group! (was: 'Mapper of the month')
Hello I am very happy to read Marc and Ben proposals here under. I think we should use a project management tool to floow them in the most efficent way : who proposes what, what is done for when, who does what ... Le Jeu 5 mars 2015 11:37, Marc Gemis a écrit : - I'm willing to help with one mapping party/presentation every 2 months we can already plan the next 6 mapping parties/ what about organizing one in each large city of Belgium : we'll have one in Brussels on April 25. And we alternate a Flemisch speaking and a French speaking city. Let's imagine (end of the month of) - June : Antwerpen - September : Liege - November : Gent - January : Mons - March : Leuven - May : Namur - June : Oostende - September : (may start over with Brussels) or so. The one in Brussels is my next appointment. thanks - I could try to write some texts for osm.be on stuff that I do (e.g. middelheim, rose garden, heritage) similar to the presentation on OpenBelgium when that is useful to show what one can do with OSM. great - I'm willing to send an email to the province for the Atlas v/d buurtwegen (just give me the text :-) ) +1 - I've contacted an ex-colleague who used drupal for some project (website of a dogschool). I asked him whether he would be willing to upgrade the and improve the infrastructure. +2 I'm not the organising type, so I won't organise meetups, mapping parties, etc. but as said before I'm willing to help with the technical part. I am the kind of person interested in organizing and meeting the press. Much less tehcnically oriented (even though I am really interested to understand and practice the tools) - Helping Nicolas with the mapping party: You can help him by advertising showing up of just email him and ask him what you can do: nico...@pettiaux.be and more information is here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Belgium/Activities#Invitation_.C3.A0_une_Cartopartie_.5B1.5D_.C3.A0_Bruxelles_-_Samedi_25_Avril_2015.2C_9h_.C3.A0_13h imho, we need to write a full program, a trilingual press document describing what we'll do and how, to attract BEGINNERS (and not making them afraid) and transmit that to the press so that they can write good papers. - Organize a local meetup: Not very difficult just go and sit somewhere and wait for people to show up. We have noticed that this gets people more involved and communication improves. +1 - Organize a mapping party: A very good idea! YES - West-Vlaanderen community-contact-person: We need someone (preferable from WVL) that can communicate with me and local orgs like westtoer to organize a couple of mapping parties. Workload is very low except when it's about to happen (the mapping party that is). Other TODO's: - Website improvements: I think our website looks like . We urgently need some work on this. We also need someone to update drupal or move to another platform (less maintenance), and setup proper multilingual support. who can help ? - Communication, for example, weekly OSM and managing the twitter-account/facebook group a bit better... ;-) Also a FR-speaking volunteer would help a lot. I volunteer for the French part. But I would very much like some active help and support. For example by Julien Fastré and/or marc Ducobu - Emailing to your province about the 'Atlas der Buurtwegen': The rights to the maps are at provincial level. We need to contact each province individually and ask them (each and every one) to release the maps for use in OSM. This is an important issue because in the past it has been assumed free and open but these maps are NOT! yes these legal points need a dedicated team imho, we should try ton convince law students and teachers to help - Local Chapter: I want to submit a proposal to become a local chapter of OSMF. Anyone willing to help with some of the administration and reading the procedure, contacting Paul Norman, etc... +1 . Much thanks. I propose to assume, for the time being, with Ben some kind of twin headed lead of the OSM-be project. In my views, we would be (Ben and myself) just the 2 porte-paroles/woordvoeders (is this goede Nederlands ?)/leaders representing the most active united speaking communities of OSM-be (I insist, form me the is ONE OSM-be but, to face reality, I think it is appropriate to have one representative who is native speaker of eahc language) Some of these may seem strange and you could say that we should all just stick to mapping but I think these actions can improve our community and give more visibility to OSM. I think you are completely right. We need to better and more communicate. Much thanks and best regards to all.

-- Saludos, Bolo www.geoinquiets.cat ___ Talk-ve mailing list Talk-ve@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ve

Hi all, Open Knowledge Belgium aims at being an umbrella organisation. That means that we are doing our uttermost best to do things for you and not restrict you in any way. You can use our (being you and the other working groups such as Creative Commons Belgium or Open Acces Belgium) legal entity as if it was your own through the representatives Ben Abelshausen and now also Nicolas Pettiaux: they can do financial transactions and sign paperwork as part of the board of the legal entity. Feel free to tell everyone that Open Street Map Belgium is an official organisation and whenever they ask you a registration number, you give the registration number of Open Knowledge Belgium. That's why we exist. Having similar goals, I believe we're stronger under one umbrella than having strong volunteers having to take care of the administrative sides of running an asbl/vzw. @Ben: I find the Local Chapter idea a very good idea. Creative Commons Belgium did the same thing within Creative Commons International. [OSM-talk-be] Helping out OpenStreetMap Belgium Working Group! (was: 'Mapper of the month')
Hi, Glenn asked to elaborate on the todo-list: Mapping parties/meetups: We need more of this! - Helping Nicolas with the mapping party: You can help him by advertising showing up of just email him and ask him what you can do: nico...@pettiaux.be and more information is here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Belgium/Activities#Invitation_.C3.A0_une_Cartopartie_.5B1.5D_.C3.A0_Bruxelles_-_Samedi_25_Avril_2015.2C_9h_.C3.A0_13h - Organize a local meetup: Not very difficult just go and sit somewhere and wait for people to show up. We have noticed that this gets people more involved and communication improves. - Organize a mapping party: A very good idea! - West-Vlaanderen community-contact-person: We need someone (preferable from WVL) that can communicate with me and local orgs like westtoer to organize a couple of mapping parties. Workload is very low except when it's about to happen (the mapping party that is). Other TODO's: - Website improvements: I think our website looks like . We urgently need some work on this. We also need someone to update drupal or move to another platform (less maintenance), and setup proper multilingual support. - Communication, for example, weekly OSM and managing the twitter-account/facebook group a bit better... ;-) Also a FR-speaking volunteer would help a lot. - Emailing to your province about the 'Atlas der Buurtwegen': The rights to the maps are at provincial level. We need to contact each province individually and ask them (each and every one) to release the maps for use in OSM. This is an important issue because in the past it has been assumed free and open but these maps are NOT! - Local Chapter: I want to submit a proposal to become a local chapter of OSMF. Anyone willing to help with some of the administration and reading the procedure, contacting Paul Norman, etc... Some of these may seem strange and you could say that we should all just stick to mapping but I think these actions can improve our community and give more visibility to OSM.

Re: [OSM-talk-be] Helping out OpenStreetMap Belgium Working Group! (was: 'Mapper of the month')
I was thinking about this location: http://www.wereldcafe.be/ The place is still available on Saturdays 21 and 28 of March. Due to personal limitations I'd want to get started at 16h. It's open until 23h. Of course, if people would want to start earlier, that's possible too, but somebody else would have to get started. There is wifi and catering. They have some sort of curtain to create a more closed off area, if needed. I can bring a projector and they have a white wall. For people who want to go out and map, both Begijnhof and Botanical garden are nearby, just like the city center and the Oude Markt. Parking is another matter... Maybe Gasthuisberg is the cheapest and most convenient way for people coming by car. There are many buses going into the center. Using the train is better, of course and again, there are many buses, but it's also possible to go on foot (and start surveying / mapillarying already :-) I'd like to show how to use Mapillary as a modern and convenient way of surveying in the field and then use those pictures and GPX tracks to add details to OSM. Re: [OSM-talk-be] Mapping in West-Vlaanderen

I would exclude (at least) the main arterial roads from the residential landuse and also stuff like this: http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/65592897 And when you did this, you'd already have it all split into much smaller landuse areas.
