3.5 and IMAP

2005-05-23 Thread Matt Thoene
Not sure what happened but over the last couple of days, IMAP with 3.5
has taken a horrible turn for the worse. Same old problems are
occurring...

Long long waits for messages to be visible (No message loaded seems to
be all I see anymore), usually ending with me having to terminate then
restart the IMAP session...which doesn't always fix it. Connection
Centre always shows the various parts of the session are "In queue".

Filters working sporadically. I often have to re-filter several times to
get all of the messages from the Inbox to their correct folders.

I'm having to Reload several messages in the Inbox on a regular basis.

It's unusable at this point. I guess I'll revert to an older version.

Hm threading is fine here, however it doesn't the message if the mid
contains [192.1688.0.5] - as these mid's are legal it's a bug of TheBat!

I just mentioned earlier on the TBBETA that we should not be posting
information concerning daily betas to the lists because it has in the
past confused people.

Dailys are technically limited to address certain people who are
experiencing a problem in order to test a possible fix. By fixing
something in a daily, they could very well break something else and
therefore should be used with caution.

All in all, TBBETA is for discussion of official betas, not dailys.

TB! uses the domain name of the sender address. What if it's
'yahoo.com' or 'gmx.net'? These aren't at all unique either. :)

I guess the hope is that this left hand side will offer the main

Re: 3.5.0.11 / 3.5 Postfix a preview of issues to be tested

2005-05-23 Thread Gary

Hi Allie,

--On Monday, May 23, 2005 3:52 PM -0500 you wrote in part:

Just curious. Can the RFC gurus tell me if that message id format is
legal?

Yes, it is very legal..

The "Message-ID:" field provides a unique message identifier that
refers to a particular version of a particular message. The
uniqueness of the message identifier is guaranteed by the host that
generates it (see below). This message identifier is intended to be
machine readable and not necessarily meaningful to humans. A message
identifier pertains to exactly one instantiation of a particular
message; subsequent revisions to the message each receive new message
  identifiers.

Note: There are many instances when messages are "changed", but those
changes do not constitute a new instantiation of that message, and
therefore the message would not get a new message identifier. For
example, when messages are introduced into the transport system, they
are often prepended with additional header fields such as trace
fields (described in section 3.6.7) and resent fields (described in
section 3.6.6). The addition of such header fields does not change
the identity of the message and therefore the original "Message-ID:"
field is retained. In all cases, it is the meaning that the sender
of the message wishes to convey (i.e., whether this is the same
message or a different message) that determines whether or not the
"Message-ID:" field changes, not any particular syntactic difference
that appears (or does not appear) in the message.

now the RECOMMENDED part

The message identifier (msg-id) itself MUST be a globally unique
identifier for a message. The generator of the message identifier
MUST guarantee that the msg-id is unique. There are several
algorithms that can be used to accomplish this. Since the msg-id has
a similar syntax to angle-addr (identical except that comments and
folding white space are not allowed), a good method is to put the
domain name (or a domain literal IP address) of the host on which the
message identifier was created on the right hand side of the "@", and
put a combination of the current absolute date and time along with
some other currently unique (perhaps sequential) identifier available
on the system (for example, a process id number) on the left hand
side. Using a date on the left hand side and a domain name or domain
literal on the right hand side makes it possible to guarantee
uniqueness since no two hosts use the same domain name or IP address
at the same time. Though other algorithms will work, it is
RECOMMENDED that the right hand side contain some domain identifier
(either of the host itself or otherwise) such that the generator of
the message identifier can guarantee the uniqueness of the left hand
side within the scope of that domain.

further

This document occasionally uses terms that appear in capital letters.
When the terms "MUST", "SHOULD", "RECOMMENDED", "MUST NOT", "SHOULD
NOT", and "MAY" appear capitalized, they are being used to indicate
particular requirements of this specification. A discussion of the
meanings of these terms appears in [RFC2119].

Strange? 10 billion people in the whole wide world who use a router for
their LAN must have a 192 IP address. Because a few billion of them will
also have a 192.168.2.12 you won't be able to find out who I am.

Seriously though, that's just the IP address my DSL router assigned to this
particular PC on a LAN of 4. Everyone who uses a router will have an IP
normally between 1 and 20 in the range 192.168.2.1to20.

I appreciate your concern but people won't be able to track me down or use
it for mail bombing as if it's me.

Unplanned things happen in the registry sometimes. This causes
programs to act broken. Even Microsoft can have this problem.
Applying MS Office Service packs comes to mind. Visual Studio too.
The normal thing that most of us see is that the new TB 3.5 installed
without a hitch. There is no way RIT can know what might be lurking
in your registry. It takes a human eye to sort things out like that
sometimes.

Only if you use Mulberry with IMAP. I would be so grateful if you would try
Mulberry with 1and1 IMAP and if it does happen with you that'll be 100%
confirmation and peace of mind for me knowing it's not my end.

You could also report it to 1&1 then and maybe get it sorted quicker :)

Thank you for your support Allie, had I read your reply before I sent my

It's not actually my ISP. I pay extra for my domain name and email service

The ISP is setting the Reply-to headers? This must be an aspect of
IMAP I wasn't aware of.

AM> And just in case you're wondering why he doesn't use TB! instead.

No, I'm not wondering. I do ignore messages regarding IMAP, so I am
not qualified to comment. What I see is that his messsages don't
thread correctly, and with my POP background, the culprit would be the
MUA. You are saying the MUA (or its settings) has nothing to do with
it, but the ISP does. Hm. An explanation is not a solution.

Occasionally I receive an reply to a thread that's orphaned, e.g.

the thread as soon as I received Thomas's reply. Yet, they are
incorrectly threaded.

Can anyone cast some light on this? BTW, I'm using thread by reference

Maybe it doesn't not work because you can set Subject with %SUBJECT and
there isn't an specific macro for other headers. But I don't know if
this is the reason.

I don't think so. My reaction wasn't one of being upset or anything
related to that. It was quite an emotion free response. Just a candid

Well, your response explains it. If we have high praises about it, this
means that we find using the protocol to be extremely useful. It's only
natural then that we'll discuss at length, the problems we're having
with it.

The very same happens concerning other aspects of TB!. You could
replace 'IMAP' with 'TB!' in your statement, and someone looking in,
wondering what the fuss with TB! is about, could be saying the same
thing. Of course, we know better and fully understand why TB! is
discussed so much and why so much time is put into it, right? We see
the returns. Returns that are determined/affected by our personal needs
and preferences and tastes. :)

It's really not a game. The daily betas are there to test one or two
bugfixes at a time and they're generally meant to be tested by only
one or two people who were experiencing the problem. Since the person
who reported the bug is the one contacted to download the daily beta
and test the fix, they know what it is they're looking for. It
shouldn't matter one iota that there might have been other bugfixes,
because they're testing one specific fix for a problem they reported.

Unless you're one of the people contacted by RITLabs to test a fix on
a problem you reported, you shouldn't be downloading and using the
daily or any other beta other than an official one.

People who fail to follow that should *not* be posting to the beta
list about bugs or things fixed in daily betas either because it only
serves to cause a ruckus like we're experiencing now.

If you want to play with daily builds for the heck of it. That's your
call, but do *not* post information to the TBBETA list about it.

Thank you.

Peter, I understand the spirit of what you are saying, and I

some reason that is lost on me. And my nervousness stems from cases

Allie, I never before saw Shakespeare get such a bad reaction. :-)
Anyway, perhaps you misunderstood. All I meant to say was that on this
list alone I see many people praising IMAP to the sky and the same
people getting caught up in lengthy discussions about IMAP problems.
For example, this topic alone seems to have been largely hijacked into
a discussion of IMAP headers. :-( So I just don't get inspired by this
to invest the time that IMAP seems to require.

Anyway...

If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber'd here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
if you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call;
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.

AV's on starting scheduler

2005-05-23 Thread Roelof Otten
Hallo tbbeta,

I was checking something in TB's scheduler and I got an AV (forgot
the addresses), previously I had used SmartBat. Could stop TB only
  via the task manager.

After restarting TB, the scheduler started fine, after cancelling my
new task and starting the scheduler again I got an AV at address
while reading address (different address from the
the first time) and the scheduler started fine.

On trying further with the scheduler and smartbat I couldn't
  reproduce this.
