OK, it'd be nice if someone gave us the occasional update on what was
happening, but they don't /have/ to; for what it's worth I don't even
believe they've a moral obligation to. They're going to tell us when
they tell us. It may be they don't give us an update until they
actually release the next version. Whatever.

I will give a little technical update. The batskin.ini, which was a
temporary glyph definition file, will no longer be read, the new file
which will persist will be batskin.xml; the format of the language
file for the people who translate The Bat! will change, the menu and
the toolbars will be customisable; shortcut editor will be altered;
some other bugs are fixed in the meanwhile; the folder tree and the
message list (tree in threading mode) will be completely different,
much much better than the current tree; etc.

Feel free to ask questions.

I had so much trouble with it that I am using Thunderbird!
And I really miss some of The Bat!'s features!
My problems being:
1) Sometimes messages would not load.
2) Sometimes messages are shown to be there more then once
when in fact they are not. (this happens a lot)
3) Also when using the Maintenance feature the imap folders I use
regular always have errors and The Bat! says it recovers the messages.

Also would it be possible to define a imap folder as the spam folder?
I have a folder on my server named SPAM which gathers the most but I
would like it to show up as a junk folder in The Bat!

You do have a sig delimiter, but please remove the sig delimiter right
above the AVG message, or turn that off completely.

TheBat uses the last sig delimiter to trim a message. That means the
AVG part disappears but your actual signature stays.

Thanks.

Re: Update on the Status of Software

2005-01-20 Thread Leif Gregory
Hello Cees,

Thursday, January 20, 2005, 2:01:12 PM, you wrote:
C no... why should I?

Let's see. (for reference, please read the welcome message you were
sent when you subscribed).

1. You are violating section G of the list rules which state that
you sig should be about 4-6 lines. Yours is 13 lines. But, I wasn't
even modding you on your sig length, only that you should remove
the cutmark between your main sig and the AVG message. I usually
don't mod much on sig lengths unless it's really excessive

2. Certifying an outgoing message as virus free is pretty irrelevant.
There isn't a single anti-virus application out there that catches
all viruses. Especially if it's a brand new virus. Therefore,
telling the recipient that your message is virus free instills a
   false sense of security.

However, to be honest, I really don't care if you include it or
not, that's not why I mentioned what I did. However, by including
it, you add three lines to your sig not to mention the three blank
lines before it plus the line with the redundant sig delimiter.. A
total of seven lines you *could* remove which would bring your
   signature to within list rules.

C apparently it does. why is that my fault? I'd say that The Bat!
C should handle this particular issue in a different way. As do most
C emailprograms as I remember

You'll get no argument from me that TheBat should handle it better.
However it doesn't and that's why *you* need to take care of it. This
is the point and only the point I was modding you on.

This also falls under list rule G.

C Secondly I've been waiting to answer you ...

I certainly do appreciate it. However, as moderators, we never take
off the asbestos suits. :-)

C because I had to calm down. BECAUSE I think you are nitpicking!!!

There's nothing nitpicky about it. They *are* the list rules which
have been around since 1996/97 and revised over the years as needed.
They are neither antiquidated nor irrelevant as they follow common
Netiquette guidelines which also have been around for ages and are
revised accordingly.

C Is this ALL that is bothering you? I'd say that the way people
C address each other is a way more important item to follow. And
C please don't come with the argument of message sizes.

Primarily it's messy. When someone replies to your messages, they must
manually cut out your topmost signature. Don't you think it's kind of
rude to force people who wish to follow list rules about trimming
their replies by making them fix something *every* single time which
you could fix just *once* by removing three characters from above the
AVG message.

And as much as you may not want to believe it, there have been and
still are (as far as I know) people subscribed to TB lists who do pay
for their bandwidth by the byte/KB.

At any rate, the point is that you are violating list rules. I didn't
even send you an official moderation message as you were doing most of
it right.

To show you why the cutmark issue is important, I did not remove your
sig manually, so below is what everyone who replies to your messages
has to cut out by hand.

If you wish to continue this, please do so at:

Thank you.

LG You'll get no argument from me that TheBat should handle it better.
LG However it doesn't and that's why *you* need to take care of it. This
LG is the point and only the point I was modding you on.

Just to pick you up *right* there my friend, there is an extremely
good reason why TB does it the way it does it and why it is not wrong.
Far from it. It is absolutely correct. Imagine a digest with multiple
messages and multiple signatures. TB *has* to consider only the final
cutmark otherwise all text below the first cutmark would be displayed
using the signature font / style / colour (which in my instance is
grey). Digests become hard to read and hard to reply to.

I felt this issue should be made a little more clear on the list and,
as you say, further replies to the list mods address.

Merriam Webster:

promises in order to gain power

The next time you decide to hang a characterization on someone, you
might want to make sure you actually know what it is your calling

Isn't it really neat how all these rules seem to define a polite list.

Yeah, it's kinda like that whole straw that broke the camels back
thing. Really, the only reason I brought it up as because he said not
to. If you really care about it take a look at the archives. There's a
pretty long thread concerning the whole subject and it was even
participated in by those people who paid by the byte/KB.

GF Quoting Dierk Haasis (1949378823.20050118105056):

It wasn't meant to be a nice message. When you jump on a moderator for
making a moderatorial decision you're essentially saying the rules
don't matter. In the long history of these lists, only one person has
ever gotten banned. He didn't agree with the list rules either. We're
still here, he's not.

If you don't like the list rules, you can go elsewhere. There's many
other lists that might cater more to your liking. You could probably
even top-post if you really wanted to.

Oh. Ok. RITlabs announces IMAP and advertises it as a built-in feature
since v2. It never worked as it should, but because /you/ don't need
it, it just doesn't matter. Right?

Btw: the avarage Joe User used, uses and will use clients like Outlook

Why? Because he hasn't to pay for them and he has no use of the full

Oh. Wait... i remember. That's one of the things, that TheBat!

Use IMAP and AVs as well as exceptions are your dialy business.

But I know. You don't need it so it doesn't count :-)

And PS:
TB! already was a superb pop3-Client in v1 which you now get for free
on many magazine-CDs. You need neither v2 nor v3 therefor.
Reasons for v2 (an v3 again - you remember?) were NFS and IMAP. NFS
seems to work now. IMAP got (much) better but still needs a lot of
fixing and improving.

Well, for you maybe. For me, reason for v2 was the better built-in PGP v8
support with PGP/MIME, the plugin system, Virtual Folders... the reason for
v3 was the NFS with common filters.

And btw., the reason for each and every version and every paid update for
me was, in the end (after a bit of public ranting when the next unexpected

Re: Update on the Status of Software

2005-01-19 Thread Michael Schneider
Hi Alexander,

Mittwoch, 19. Januar 2005, 18:38:

Please don't drag this out of the context. I was talking about novice
users, which I understand are private home users (mostly), and those won't
use or need IMAP as often as pro/business users, if at all. Someone correct
me if this assumption is wrong.

As read below in my prior message. TB! doesn't focus on John Doe home
users in the first way but advanced home users and semiprofessionalls.
And they will use IMAP more and more often.

TheBat! focuses on (semi)professionall users with it features, lookfeel,
etc. - not on John Doe homeusers who want to send funpics all two to
 three days.

And I am glad about this, but do you expect Ritlabs to make a living out of
supporting that existing and rather small user base?

Do you expect John Does to buy something they could get for free and use
more easily? I showed much people TB! because I don't like OE,
Pegasus, etc. - but they won't use it. To high integrated, to uneasy
to use, to overloaded AND no good HTML-Support ;-)

Use IMAP and AVs as well as exceptions are your dialy business. But I
know. You don't need it so it doesn't count :-)

You're taking this discussion onto a personal and ironic level, why? Is
there really the need for this?

Sorry, but it seemed like your argumentation was on a level like:
I don't need it so I don't care.
If it's not, i appologize to you.

The license fees, summed up for v1 + v2 + v3, are something like $70 maybe
(in the past 3 years for me, much longer for others), is this *really*
worth to make so much noise each and every time the were is the next
update topic comes up? Why don't you send your complaints directly to
 Ritlabs if you're so unhappy?

Doesn't matter whats the cost. I bought something that is not working
as the selling/producing company promised = time for subsequent
improvement.

They promised working IMAP and the working NFS for v2 ...
Now I payed for v3 (for the same features they promised/advertised in
v2) - and still bugs, bugs, bugs.

Don't you think I have the right for a working version?

Or for example:
Don't you download fixes and patches for Windows and wouldn't you
complain if Microsoft says You bought what you got. We just develop
the next version, no matter what problems there are in this.?
No, you want Microsoft to support their product and improve it as long
as it shows major issues.

And that's what I want from RITlabs - working with built-in advertised
features without AVs and exceptions.

That's not much in my eyes.

Well, for you maybe. For me, reason for v2 was the better built-in PGP v8
support with PGP/MIME, the plugin system, Virtual Folders... the reason for
v3 was the NFS with common filters.

But you agree, that IMAP is one of the advertised features for v2 and
v3?

If so, you agree that the customer expects this features to work. And
you agree that the customers wants fixes for not working functions
in the first line - not new gaming gimmicks.

That smiley-stuff is fun if you send emails to people how also use TB!
and perhaps use your own smilies - no question. But there are things of
higher priority.

And btw., the reason for each and every version and every paid update for
me was, in the end (after a bit of public ranting when the next unexpected
paid update arrived, I admit I am human), the belief that supporting a
small independent company with a good product that costs an IMHO absolutely
neglectable license fee is a good idea in those rotten times we live in.

As I said in another message on this topic:
I put a good face on the matter and also bought v3 because I did not
want to see TheBat! dying.

But everything has its limits.

regards
Michael

Don't compare apples and oranges. The support contracts you mention
don't apply to support like bugfixes or neccessary improvements to
finish the products as they were sold.

Theses contracts include additional or enhanced support like special

And to get this straight: I won't buy any new version, won't pay for a
brand new v4 unless major bugs are fixed in v3.

RITlabs cheated their customers for over a year with their unfair v2

Calm down. No one said anything about having to pay for anything. In

the next version would be that of the time we'd have to wait for it.

OK, it'd be nice if someone gave us the occasional update on what was

BTW, under German law Michael can only hold element5 responsible as
far as they don't shift it upon the manufacturer. I haven't bought TB
through e5 but other sw and I don't remember (in the sense: I haven't
found it on their contracts) seeing anything remotely telling me that
whatever they sell me may be crap but don't hold us responsible.

Under German law the salesman has the right to improve any product he
sold if the customer finds it faulty to the conditions it was sold
under. If this cannot be done within reasonable effort and time
(usually two tries are granted to the seller) the customer has the
right to get part of the money back or return the product. The last
one is usually excluded for sw (sold as is); most direct merchants,
like RITLabs, iView or BreezeSystems offer trial versions and open
forums to see if a program fits ones needs.

I have written it in the past and I do it again: I only pay for what I
get now, not for what I may perhaps, possibly get in any undefined
future.

I made the comment because the same person has asked the same question
on a regular basis, that's all. Yes, we are all waiting for a newer
version but I seem to remember (I've deleted the original) that the
developers said it was being put back until the New Year so one would
assume it's due fairly soon so just be patient.

You are correct, I've asked this question on a regular basis to make a
single point. Time lines are important. My basic expectation is that
when a time lines is given, it will be honored. My concern is that
time lines are provided in this forum and then not honored.

We stared a beta cycle and jumped to a new release last time (old
news). We stared a another beta cycle and we appeared to have stalled
in the middle (current news).

My question was a simple inquiry to find out where we are at right
now. All of the answers, while interesting to read, have not answered
the basic question. Thirty days have passed since my last inquiry.
I'm simply asking for an update on the time line of the next new beta
(next week, next month etc) or are we going directly to a new release
(no yes, under consideration)?

A simply inquiry which I'm sure Max will provide an answer to as he
did before Christmas.

Hello Ethan,

EJM Time lines are important.

Sorry but that's rubbish in this case. It doesn't make a penny worth of
difference whether they bring out the beta tomorrow or this time next
week. I'm sure they're trying to get the best possible programme out to
the testers or else we'll have a rehash of all the moaners coming out of
the woodwork yet again for another week or two.

EJM My question was a simple inquiry to find out where we are at right
EJM now.

And my answer was just as simple. Be patient and wait for a, hopefully,
fairly bug free beta which will be released when they are ready to
release it. If they promised to release it, say, tomorrow and it came
out full of bugs, you'd be up in arms saying Why release a buggy
version? They are trying to avoid that, it seems to me, and yet people
still complain. They can't win and I pity them because they have given
us a quite wonderful, IMHO, product that does 95% of what people want
95% of the time, or am I just easily satisfied?

I believe you have missed my point. As I indicated, time lines are
important to me. You asked why I keep asking, I gave you a very up
front and clear answer.

I simply don't agree. The be patient and wait routine does not work
for daily business. Without time frames, things simply don't get
done. In this case, I did not ask them to complete something for
today or tomorrow. I simply asked for a time frame.

It is a very reasonable request and provided in the spirit of a simple
ask.

Again, the best person to answer this question is Max and he will do
so when he can.

What I do find frustrating is every time one asks a simple question of
this list, it simply goes over the top.

Maybe a lesson is the making for me.

Jerry.

Let me add that TB is still rather on the good side. I use a number of
programmes that stay on hiatus for months and years before a new
version comes out. TextPad hasn't been updated for quite some time,
Agent promises and promises but rarely delivers*, Feurio has promised
a v2 years ago but doesn't develop it (I asked them, they answered;
it's simply not affordable).

Other programmes get updated every few days or even hours. In the case
of Vuescan the very timely development by the sole programmer, Ed
Hamrick, didn't hold people to bash him.

Whatever you do, whatever your attitude as a company, you cannot win.

*v2 is a year old, still missing functionality that was promised for
the initial release, now postponed to 2.1, which was promised for last
spring, then last autumn, then Q4 ...

Wow! What an excellent public announcement!

It adds emphasis to the need for patience cited also by Richard
Wakeford and by Dierk, and, by implication, by you, Dennis.

Other needs--and wishes--by TB! users are, I am confident, being
addressed in the same way, quietly, behind the scenes. I have seen
comments by Allie Martin, for instance, from time to time, about the
work he is helping with on IMAP.

I know that Marck and others help behind the scenes.

Everything cannot be done in public. I seem to recall 9Val asking
once--I'm paraphrasing--Would you prefer that I work on the bug or
discuss things endlessly here on the list with you?

We are only a little past halfway into January, 2005. The tasks the
developers are addressing are really complex. Like producing a decent
Help File, getting things right enough to show to us ordinary beta
testers may take months, in my opinion.

Patience, indeed, is a good watchword. I'm all for it!!

IMHO an improved and more current help would definitely improve the
utility of the program to both existing and new users. I'm glad to
hear this!

Although I speak English I am concerned about Ritlabs and TB reaching
the product's market potential. Will the revised help text be
