Hi Gerard, G I believe it could be a filter deleting a (spma) msg? I just checked all the active filters and none of them are set to play any sound. The only filter I have that operates automatically on receipt moves messages from the Inbox to other folders for sorting. But the filters themselves don't have the Play sound action checked off. It's definitely something to do with the receive process but I'll be damned if I can figure out what triggers it. It's very annoying. Anti-Virus Programs.
Hi, I'm currently using the Free Version of AVG by Grisoft with the Plug-In to The Bat! This works well and recently caught Klez and quarantined it. But after reading the comments about NOD32 and looking at their site and seeing the comparative speed and scores, I'm thinking of changed to NOD32. I am reluctant to make the change, because the current set-up seems to work well. Is it a simple case of downloading the program and installing the plug-in to get this up and running? Where can I gain the plug-in? I'd like NOD32 to be a resident shield as well as an e-mail scanner. I've read it's a POP3 scanner to, but what are the advantages of this over just checking when the mail is received? Thanks, Chris. Flying tray icon
When there's new mail, the bat on the system tray icon starts to fly. Being a highly curious person, I just HAVE to open the program at that point to see what has come in. I have setup TB to check mail every three minutes, and having subscribed to several mailing lists, I'm getting new mail all the time. As a result, I find myself opening The Bat all the time and I'm not getting any work done!! :) I'd like to have a folder-based option (or a dedicated filter) that rules whether or not incoming messages in that folder trigger the swooping bat. Or that only triggers the bat when eg. incoming mail was addressed to one of my personal accounts. I'm not currently using the Mail Ticker because I find that even more distracting, and it tends to get in the way, whereever I put it. If I could set a similar trigger for it, and it would integrate into the task bar, I'd find it much more useful (the windows taskbar usually occupies just one row, but you can drag its top side upwards to make it twice as large - plenty of room there for a mail ticker that doesn't get in the way). MAPI mail sync works just fine in my exp. As a matter of fact, in the 1.60 set they improved it! Used to be that you needed to have TB! the active app, but now TB! has taken care of it for you. Also, it is faster I think (never timed it) - My Palm inbox has 230 msgs, and it only takes a couple of seconds to sync the mail (Pentium III 1.2, and USB port sync). Below cut from What's new in The Bat! 1.60? [-] Focusing problem upon MAPI calls [-] Some bugs in the MAPI support subsystem JN First, TB!'s inbox can go into the Palm. It's not designed to do JN that, and the conduits won't support it, The Palm conduits support using MAPI to sync your mail, so it is supported, but don't bother asking Palm for support getting it set up... g JN but Tim Musson (whose name I hope I didn't misspell too badly) Nope, got it right on, but can you pronounce it correctly? g JN has instructions in the Bat! archives It is also in the FAQ that Marck maintains. JN on how to set the user configuration file to load TB! into a Palm. JN I do it all the time and it works. Me to, but I have a separate account for my Palm - looks like it came from this one though g isn't TB! the best! JN The AB is different. Personally, I would prefer to have something JN fully integrated like Outlook or Notes, but Outlook is not a good JN PIM, and Notes is only for larger or more complex organizations JN than I am. So I use Lotus Organizer, which is a really good PIM, JN and combine it with TB! Simple MAPI should make the Org AB work JN seamlessly in TB! (as it does in Eudora and Becky), but no such JN luck. So I import it into TB! But I also synch Organizer directly, JN so what results is this: JN My Palm has all my contacts and it has my inbox (sometimes JN attachments, too, but that's another story), as well as tasks, JN etc. TB! also has my contacts. It all works together very well, JN but it requires a love for this geeky stuff or else a clearly JN written guide. Not a bad solution, but still manual to get in and out of TB! Re: Palm Sync.
Hey Rick, My MUA believes you used The Bat! (v1.60m) Personal to write the following on Thursday, June 13, 2002 at 12:32:38 AM. TM (and in the scheme of things, the people that want to sync their TM Palm's and the TBab are a fairly small number of registered TM TBers...) FF I do not know how many Palm users there are in The Bat! world, FF but I would be willing to bet that there are plenty! Also, having FF a Palm conduit to TB's address book gives me one more very useful FF reason to recommend TB to other users. It would really help. I agree, I want it enough to pay for it. What I meant is my guess at the number of Palm/TB users is less than 5-10% the number of TB users. RR I, as well, know plenty of people that won't switch to The Bat RR since it doesn't synch to the Palm. TB has 2 things that match apps on the Palm - mail and AB, so I wouldn't say that TB doesn't sync to the Palm. It just doesn't sync the AB. RR More and more people like having all their devices integrated. I am one of them. RR That's one advantage Outlook ~Shudder~ RR has in the market right now. It's very frustrating that I have one RR set of contacts in my palm and then another in the bat (then RR another in my cell phone..but that's not the Bat's fault:) and yet RR none of them synch with each other. I am trying to get something coordinated, but, I don't program in anything that would be appropriate (perl is my language), so about all I can do is hope/push/facilitate/coordinate/whatever... g -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] MUA = TB! v1.60q (www.RitLabs.com/The_Bat) Windows 2000 5.0.2195 (Service Pack 2) The days of the digital watch are numbered. TB Is Crawling
I posted to the list at the end of last week, but didn't have any success finding solution. I have a little bit more information, so I thought I'd take another run at the list and see if anyone has any suggestions. :) We have several employees all running TB 1.60q on Windows98 boxes. Most everyone has had no problems with TB, but I have two workstations that are giving me fits. Specifically, when an e-mail is deferred to the Outbox, there is a delay of 15 - 30 seconds before the program responds and continues. In other words, when a user clicks the Put the letter in the Outbox button, there is a long delay, where the program does absolutely nothing and will not respond before the e-mail is placed in the Outbox. Keep in mind, that the e-mail is NOT being sent immediately, so (to my knowledge), there is no interaction with the POP3 server that is being used to send the mail. Since the mailboxes are stored on the server, I have added the exact same accounts to other workstations and have not experienced any delays whatsoever. This leads me to believe that the error is localized to the workstation and not to any server issues. I have un-installed TB, rebooted and re-installed TB only to have the same delays continue. Does anyone have any suggestions of how or why this is happening? Unfortunately, both users receive a good bit of e-mail, so throughout the day, these delays are driving them nuts. Thanks in advance! which cleans out more space? and questions/comments
Sorry for not searching the archives I'm sure this has come up and I'm being a jerk for not searching. Not a pressing question but just curious does Purge or Compress all folders clear out more space. I think purge does a purge and compress and compress just compresses? If so shouldn't the menu item say purge and compress? Also I'm not really sure what purge is. Why would you ever want to just compress without purging? (or vice versa if there is way to purge without compressing). Also, I had my trash folders to set to compress on exit, but noticed my other folders weren't on this setting. Is there way to set compress all folders on exit? Someone's post here was about taking a long time when the message went to the outfolder and the recommending compressing. I just compressed all folders and wow, what a difference! Before when I would go to some of my boxes it would take a while to see the messages sometimes. This obviously must have been because I was daily deleting out 100s of messages without ever compressing the main folder boxes. Does the Bat have some kind of reminder or something? I mean your casual user might remember to clean out the trash bin but many might not think it's that important compress folders. Obviously it is, however. Something should trigger the user that they should probably compress their folders if it gets really bad. Just a thought, then again, your average joe might not be using the Bat. Curious, does Outlook have to do something similar? I don't remember having to copress with OE, but then again it's been A LONG time since I've used it. -- Rick mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] I'd rather be rich than stupid -Jack Handey Current Ver: 1.60q FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Bug Reports: https://bt.ritlabs.com

AVG or NOD32?
Hi all, I think the title say's it all, should I use AVG or NOD32 as my Anti-Virus? I must confess, AVG seems to be working seamlessly with The Bat!, but I have concerns that AVG isn't as good as it could be at trapping virus's (although, it did catch Klez yesterday and added it to the quarantine!). Whereas, I here NOD32 is really good at it's job, but isn't quite as seamless with The Bat! If I used NOD32, I'd like it to link in with The Bat! and scan when mails come in rather than on the server, but it appears there's a problem with the options once the plug-in is added? SOT: POP3 lock out - alternatives?
Hi, our administrators are threatening to disable POP3 on our Exchange server. They claim they are getting to many foreign (invalid) connection attempts and this is slowing down the server overall. I have a hard time believing this but I'm not in the position to tell them that there assumptions are wrong. If they really disable POP3 it would mean that I would have to give up the Bat! and my productivity would decrease tremendously. Any suggestions what I can do? What can I tell the administrators? Could I use LookOut to just fetch the mail and get it into the Bat somehow? Is there something like an Exchange proxy client that would translate my POP3 requests to Exchange protocol? Subject: Flying Tray Icon From: Kjartan Mannes ~~ Hello Kjartan, Wouldn't it be possible to write a small program that shows a small tray icon when called from a filter? Re: How to stop system stop sound?
Hi Julian, JBL It was discussed in a thread during May. Try searching for the thread JBL called Turn off the bleeping beep in the TBUDL Archives. I searched the thread in the archives and the only thing I could find that might apply was a reference to changing the POP3 access timeout (but I couldn't find the message that said how to do this). FWIW, I am running a firewall (Tiny Personal) and it's never caused problems with apps before. There are no filters in place that delete messages. It is definitely the Windows Stop or error sound (thunk). Even if I could just change the sound specifically for The Bat (somewhat like how Lotus Organizer allows you to), that would be a step in the right direction since it's always played at least once during a Fetch All and usually 2 or 3 times. Even if I could just change the sound specifically for The Bat (somewhat like how Lotus Organizer allows you to), that would be a step in the right direction since it's always played at least once during a Fetch All and usually 2 or 3 times. You could submit it as a bug - there is obviously something wrong, so TB should tell you want it is. Maybe one of the developers will know what events generate these warnings. Hi Julian, JBL The normal mail errors are Question sounds - I hear them regularly JBL during the day, because my ISP's mail servers often respond slower JBL than TB's time out. You cannot adjust the timeout. Shoot, that's it then. The stop sound on my setup is the same (for some reason) as the Windows Question sound. You're right, it is the question sound then so it could be a mail server error of some sort. Does TB keep any detailed logs of SMTP/POP3 activity? The FETCH is not very informative.
