I have never bothered with MS certification, just as none of the
Microsoft employees ever bother to get certification from me. That's
probably because very few of them would pass. I certainly have as long
a pedigree in this industry as Mr Gates. I may not have his success
and I certainly don't have his wealth, but I absolutely refute his
(organization's) right or ability to certify me!

Still, this is going way OT and I must insist that any replies on this

We have three "I.T" people at work. They are straight out of I T

When they have to deal with the AS400, BPCS or the Phoenix Grape
System, it turns into a kiddy zoo real fast.
They are convinced that McAfee is the ONLY virus program out there.
After a long battle we convinced them to not use outlook. They
switched to Lotus Notes which has become a clone of Outlook, not much

For your local / own pleasure; how you see text as you type it? Yes.
In what you send? No.

The Bat! uses system fonts. The RTV (Rich Text Viewer - Options |
Preferences | Viewer) is able to use any installed font. The FWV and
the Editor Preferences (Options | Editor Preferences | Display tab |
Change button next to "Font") can only use Fixed Width fonts.

Search the message archive (see the link in the footer below) for
Andale Mono, a popular fixed width font for which a URL has been given
many times.

The current implementation has history to it and surfaced in the wake
of a long, heated discussion about it. I was the one fighting for your
cause. The member (no longer with us) against our suggestion, made the
point that while using a client that supported what we want, he often
selected parts of messages for other purposes than for quoting and
would not, on many occasions, deselect the text. He would then hit
reply to see the address, url or some snippet he had copied and pasted
elsewhere, appear in his reply. A valid concern I'd say, though it
didn't really affect me with regards to how I work.

Anyway, Ritlabs implemented the feature, but in the way you have it,
as a compromise. You have to use a special command to quote only
selected text. No problem for me, as long as I can get TB! to do it. I
only wish it would also work when replying to all or when replying to
sender.

I'm coming round to that thought myself and think less of the
arguments against (accidental selection before replying). Has to go
into the wish list, I guess. Then it might be considered as a V2
improvement.

I had this problem for a while and finally traced it to a couple of my
filters that were set to delete incoming matches. When I changed this
to moving the message to trash, it stopped. I had taken part in the
thread that Januk is mentioning. The other possibility was a problem
with server connections that in one persons case was firewall related.
Disabling the firewall cured the problem. I don't remember what the
permanent solution was.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the place to add this, but it was mentioned
there's about 700 people on this distribution, but I was wondering if
there was an estimated figure to how many people *Worldwide* use this
product?

I know it might not be a fair reflection, but can you also tell how
many people have downloaded it from your site?

I just thinks it's great to be using a quality product that's

The Bat! Mail Fonts.

2002-06-13 Thread Chris Weaven

Hi,

Maybe I'm being basic, but can I change the font used for e-mail
messages in The Bat!

If so, can new ones be added and if so, what folder do I need to add
them to to make them available in The Bat!

Also, is there a way of making the I capital if it's placed on it's
own rather than a small i?

Thanks,

It feels natural and it free's up a function key and menu entry.

Shoot, that's it then. The stop sound on my setup is the same (for
some reason) as the Windows Question sound. You're right, it is the
question sound then so it could be a mail server error of some sort.

Does TB keep any detailed logs of SMTP/POP3 activity? The FETCH is not
very informative.

The normal mail errors are Question sounds - I hear them regularly
during the day, because my ISP's mail servers often respond slower
than TB's time out. You cannot adjust the timeout.

You could submit it as a bug - there is obviously something wrong, so
TB should tell you want it is. Maybe one of the developers will know
what events generate these warnings. The URL of the Bug Report site is
at the bottom of this message.

Are you sure that it is TB generating the sound, and not some other
application that TB is affecting?

For anglo-saxon keyboards this may be true. It doesn't work on my german
one. I get the next unread message with ctrl + right arrow. It has been
like that from my beginning with 1.49... I never saw it documented
anywhere. Btw. on my keyboard ctrl + ] would mean to type ctrl + right alt

I think initially it is flagged for deletion, and then gets hidden
from the main view, but you can display them again by going to "Folder
- Browse Deleted Messages". IIRC, when you purge the folders, it then
removes those deleted messages, possibly by reading the database of
messages, and deleting the message, as for attachments that are
separate, I have no idea.

I believe it first goes to your trash folder in TB! & when
that is emptied it is deleted from your hard disk,

Yeah. Outlook, which one of the Toronto newspapers termed "LookOut!" a
few years ago during one of the (many) virus attacks that spread

Re: How to stop system "stop" sound?

2002-06-13 Thread Blarp

Hi Julian,

JBL> It was discussed in a thread during May. Try searching for the thread
JBL> called "Turn off the bleeping beep" in the TBUDL Archives.

I searched the thread in the archives and the only thing I could find
that might apply was a reference to changing the POP3 access timeout
(but I couldn't find the message that said how to do this).

FWIW, I am running a firewall (Tiny Personal) and it's never caused
problems with apps before. There are no filters in place that delete
messages. It is definitely the Windows "Stop" or "error" sound (thunk).

Even if I could just change the sound specifically for The Bat
(somewhat like how Lotus Organizer allows you to), that would be a
step in the right direction since it's always played at least once
during a Fetch All and usually 2 or 3 times.

Another good idea... if they don't know what they're accessing, they
cannot research weaknesses ;)

Erm... take a look at any of the last 50 viruses that have hit the
news... what email client to they specifically target? Plus, if the
firewall was setup correctly, having a worm on the inside of the
network shouldn't really matter, as it shouldn't be able to get out...
along with a centralized virus scanning system... and you have no
problems. Plus, I think if TB! was a threat, they'd have been shut
down... ;)

I am using 6.04.1120. I've used previous versions also with no problems

I've done just that with a program called PowerPro. Depending upon
what filter catches the mail a small (5x5 pixel) flag pops up in the

on them pops me to the virtual desktop where TB! is and resets the

Tell them to change the settings on the firewall to accept only known
connections... like your LAN, unless they want external users from
accessing the mail. POP3 is an uncommon point of entry for hackers,
they normally try SSH, Telnet, FTP, RAS, VPN, etc. You may also maybe
suggest moving POP3 to another port to fool most attempts.

SOT: POP3 lock out - alternatives?

2002-06-13 Thread Markus Gloede

Hi,

our administrators are threatening to disable POP3 on our Exchange server.
They claim they are getting to many foreign (invalid) connection attempts
and this is slowing down the server overall.

I have a hard time believing this but I'm not in the position to tell them
that there assumptions are wrong. If they really disable POP3 it would
mean that I would have to give up the Bat! and my productivity would
decrease tremendously.

Any suggestions what I can do? What can I tell the administrators? Could I
use LookOut to just fetch the mail and get it into the Bat somehow? Is
there something like an Exchange proxy client that would translate my POP3
requests to Exchange protocol?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Markus

There is such an option.

Purge will delete message that exceed the folders storage
specifications, i.e. if the folder is configured to keep only 400
messages then the most recent 400 are kept while the earlier messages
are purged. If the folder is restricted to keep messages for 30 days
then older messages are purged. That's what purge does.

Compress will reconstruct the folder to finally remove purged and
deleted messages (which, up to that point, have been retained but
marked as "deleted").

When you create a new folder where one already exists, you are

which cleans out more space? and questions/comments

2002-06-13 Thread Rick Reumann

Sorry for not searching the archives I'm sure this has come up and I'm
being a jerk for not searching. Not a pressing question but just
curious does
"Purge" or "Compress" all folders clear out more space. I think purge
does a "purge and compress" and compress just compresses? If so
shouldn't the menu item say "purge and compress"? Also I'm not really
sure what purge is. Why would you ever want to just compress without
purging? (or vice versa if there is way to purge without compressing).

Also, I had my trash folders to set to compress on exit, but noticed
my other folders weren't on this setting. Is there way to set compress
all folders on exit?

Someone's post here was about taking a long time when the message went
to the outfolder and the recommending compressing. I just compressed
all folders and wow, what a difference! Before when I would go to some
of my boxes it would take a while to see the messages sometimes. This
obviously must have been because I was daily deleting out 100s of
messages without ever compressing the main folder boxes.

Does the Bat have some kind of reminder or something? I mean your
casual user might remember to clean out the trash bin but many might
not think it's that important compress folders. Obviously it is,
however. Something should trigger the user that they should probably
compress their folders if it gets really bad. Just a thought, then
again, your average joe might not be using the Bat. Curious, does
Outlook have to do something similar? I don't remember having to
copress with OE, but then again it's been A LONG time since I've used
it.

Marck,

Yes. It's precisely the kind of issue that will lead to scores of
"lost mail" reports, which is not what the program's reputation needs
if it's going to go after a wider audience.

In another post, you mentioned that, when the interruption has
occurred in the course of moving a folder, you can create a new folder
in the new place and all is fixed. How does the newly created folder
'capture' the moved message base, though?

Yes. I have lost folder contents. If a folder has been moved then its
contents are in the new location. If the hierarchy change is lost then
the folder reappears where it was but will be empty. Simply creating a
folder in the new position will recover the lost messages, so it's not
actually serious. It can be a shock to the unprepared tough.

What do you mean by dangerous? Do I risk loosing more than just the

Some settings are only saved on exit. If TB undergoes summary
termination (power loss, task management, crash or some such) then
certain configuration changes may get lost. This is at its most
dangerous when it comes to folder hierarchy changes. I *always* exit
and reload whenever I make such changes.

Are these outbox folders configured to "Compress on exit"? I'll bet
they are uncompressed and occupy many megabytes, all of which are
traversed, one deleted (sent) message at a time, every time a new
outbound message is saved to it.

That's my guess. Compress the outbox folders and see what happens.

TB Is Crawling

2002-06-13 Thread Michael T. Ashby

I posted to the list at the end of last week, but didn't have any
success finding solution. I have a little bit more information, so I
thought I'd take another run at the list and see if anyone has any
suggestions. :)

We have several employees all running TB 1.60q on Windows98 boxes.
Most everyone has had no problems with TB, but I have two workstations
that are giving me fits.

Specifically, when an e-mail is deferred to the Outbox, there is a
delay of 15 - 30 seconds before the program responds and continues. In
other words, when a user clicks the "Put the letter in the Outbox"
button, there is a long delay, where the program does absolutely
nothing and will not respond before the e-mail is placed in the
Outbox. Keep in mind, that the e-mail is NOT being sent immediately,
so (to my knowledge), there is no interaction with the POP3 server
that is being used to send the mail.

Since the mailboxes are stored on the server, I have added the exact
same accounts to other workstations and have not experienced any
delays whatsoever. This leads me to believe that the error is
localized to the workstation and not to any server issues.

I have un-installed TB, rebooted and re-installed TB only to have the
same delays continue.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how or why this is happening?
Unfortunately, both users receive a good bit of e-mail, so throughout
the day, these delays are driving them nuts.

Thanks in advance!

Michael T. Ashby

It's that "responsive" thing. If they're unresponsive about developing
a plug in when given a source code template how responsive do you
think they will be about publishing or revealing the entry points into
their code to allow another software manufacturer to use them? I think
there's almost less chance of that than them developing the plug in!

Besides, I personally would rather see the very small RITlabs team
concentrate on getting V2 coded and Trend's very large team
concentrate on spreading the use of their AV product. If that means
spending half a day "filling in the blanks" in a source code template
for a plug-in, it's a good investment.

The AVG and Dr.Web plug ins were written by the AV authors themselves.
Sample source code for plug-ins was published on the TBBETA list and
if the PC-cillin authors want to put the effort in they could produce
a plug in from that quite easily themselves.

Hi Joseph.

At 10:07 PM on Wednesday, June 12, 2002 you wrote the

A very funny line. Thanks for the chuckle.

Thanks for the URLs. Is there some way to ask RIT labs to
consider a plug-in for PC-cillin or how does that work?

 TIA

I propose you search for ".wav" with Google. There is some good places
there. Here are some of those, I use.

www.wavcentral.com

www.dailywav.com

www.wavsite.com

I don't use standard mail sounds, but quotes from films.

Re: Palm Sync.

2002-06-13 Thread Tim Musson

Hey Rick,

My MUA believes you used The Bat! (v1.60m) Personal
to write the following on Thursday, June 13, 2002 at 12:32:38 AM.

TM>>> (and in the scheme of things, the people that want to sync their
TM>>> Palm's and the TBab are a fairly small number of registered
TM>>> TBers...)

FF>> I do not know how many Palm users there are in The Bat! world,
FF>> but I would be willing to bet that there are plenty! Also, having
FF>> a Palm conduit to TB's address book gives me one more very useful
FF>> reason to recommend TB to other users. It would really help.

I agree, I want it enough to pay for it. What I meant is my guess at
the number of Palm/TB users is less than 5-10% the number of TB users.

RR> I, as well, know plenty of people that won't switch to The Bat
RR> since it doesn't synch to the Palm.

TB has 2 things that match apps on the Palm - mail and AB, so I
wouldn't say that TB doesn't sync to the Palm. It just doesn't sync
the AB.

RR> More and more people like having all their devices integrated.

I am one of them.

RR> That's one advantage Outlook
~Shudder~
RR> has in the market right now. It's very frustrating that I have one
RR> set of contacts in my palm and then another in the bat (then
RR> another in my cell phone..but that's not the Bat's fault:) and yet
RR> none of them synch with each other.

I am trying to get something coordinated, but, I don't program in
anything that would be appropriate (perl is my language), so about all
I can do is hope/push/facilitate/coordinate/whatever...
