Marck has made some filters for TB that will send the SPAM off to
spamcop with little problem- all you do is CTRL-ALT-S and the message is

 Thanks Paul :-)

I tried to get this filters working, too, and I have a problem with
it. When I look at the Filters generated after pasting, first thing I
notice, is that the first Filter doesn't get the name written in the
NAME: tag (it's just called New Rule), with the second one it's
working properly, getting the name 'SpamCop AutoResponder' after pasting.
That in itself wouldn't matter, I can rename it, but why do they act
so differently. And when I try to use it, with CRTL-ALT-S, it's not
saving it (as I think it's supposed to from looking at the filter) to
C:\temp\export.txt, but is opening a 'Save file as...' requester
instead with the subject of the email being the suggested filename!
What's amiss?

Installing the Bat! on XP

2003-02-09 Thread Mike Phillipson
Hello tbudl,

I recently upgraded to Windows XP from 98.

Its all gone horribly wrong. I chose a fresh install
rather than an upgrade which means I have to reinstall
The Bat!. When I try I can get TB working in one user
account OK but when I try to run it in any other XP
account I get ---

The Bat!

Cannot access directory C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\user
name\!C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\DESKTOP\MAIL

I can't seem to find any special instructions for
installing TB on XP anywhere on the net and I
desperately don't want to be forced into using Outlook
as I've been a happy registered Bat! user for several
years and appreciate the benefits.

Any pointers please.

The path to the temporary folder (C:\temp\export.txt) is hard wired
into the filter. If this does not exist or is not accessible on your

To change the path, scroll down the Actions tab on for the filter, and

have to install it for each user (at least that's what I did) and then
use the registration key on each user (that's what the guys from

To me, this suggests that your default mail store is in Documents and

up the relevant data then try logging on as the user for which TB does
work, then moving the default message store to somewhere that all
users can access (e.g., C:\Mail)

In the filter action, go to the 'Create a message for' option and
hit the template button to the far right. A template dialog should

Yours simply says: %put='C:\temp\export.txt'

Server Timeout setting ??

2003-02-09 Thread Rob
Hi,

i'm having a look at IzyMail (a local mail server that allows you to use
POP3/SMTP for webmail based accounts) to handle my Hotmail e-mail thru
TheBat!
there's only one problem ; when i attach pictures the action seems to
time-out and i get this in TB's log :

09/02/2003, 12:35:42: SEND - connected to SMTP server
 09/02/2003, 12:35:42: SEND - sending message to ...
!09/02/2003, 12:36:32: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply - error
 09/02/2003, 12:36:33: SEND - connection finished - 0 messages sent
09/02/2003, 12:36:33: SEND - Some messages were not sent - check the log for details
(btw ; is there really another log with more details or is this all ??)

anyway, i checked IzyMail's web site and they suggest that for big
transfers the e-mail client might get 'impatient' and stops the transfer.
so is there a 'server timeout' setting in TB ??
as a work-around i reduced the size of the picture and then it got thru, so
size and time to transfer indeed seem to be the problem ...

that the user you're trying to run TB! has doesn't have the
permissions to access those directories.

You didn't give much detail, but I assume that you installed TB! in
an admin account and are then trying to run it from a restricted

Try right clicking the TB! shortcut and selecting 'Run As..'.

Select 'The following user' and type in the username and password

MP I can't seem to find any special instructions for installing TB on

No special instructions are required for installing for a single
user.

However, if you wish to use TB! in multiple XP user accounts then
you need to know that TB! stores its general configuration data in
HKEY_Current_User. Each XP user account will load it's own
HKey_Current_User hive. As a result, if you install and configure
TB! in one account A and log into another account B, you'll not be able
to use the settings in the previous account A, unless you run TB! as
the previous user A.

You'd otherwise have to reinstall TB! into the account B. Or you can
log into account A, export the registry key
HKey_Current_User/Software/Rit, log into Account B and import the
registry key into it. In this way you copy one users TB!
configuration data to the other.

Re[2]: Selective Download .txt file of spammers

2003-02-09 Thread Terry M. Roy
Jurgen wrote:

Where did you get these filters from? I recommend that you visit
the Library on the FAQ site - there are good instructions for
implementing these filters there. Line wrap in the source filter
can really mess you up with them.

Hi,

On my machine, it wasn't a problem with line wrap. I installed the
filters the other day, changed the submit address and double-checked
that I had a c:\temp directory. I could not get the Submit spam to
SpamCop filter to work initially. It would create the export.txt file
but would not create a new message to SpamCop.

I copied and pasted the filter from my TB into a text file and
compared it to the one posted. Other than the expected differences
(Source, Target and New Addr) everything was the same. I then
examined the template for creating a new message in the filter and the
template contained:

%put='C:\temp\export.txt'

I deleted that and reinserted the line by using the macro button. The
template now contained the following:

%PUT=C:\Temp\export.txt

I tested the filter and it worked perfectly. The key was the double
quotes. I then copied the working filter to a text file and compared
it to the filter on the web. The difference is in the line
NewTemplate:

%put\3D\27C:\5Ctemp\5Cexport.txt\27\0D\0A

This caused my machine to use single quotes. The line in my now
working filter reads:

NewTemplate: %PUT\3D\22C:\5CTemp\5Cexport.txt\22\0D\0A

So it seems as if, at least on my machine, the 27 is interpreted as
single quotes and the 22 is double quotes. I poked around in the
archive, but I couldn't find any messages relating to this. Maybe I
didn't use the right search string.

Once I got that to work, I was then able to test out the filter for
automatically launching IE when you receive an accepted message from
SpamCop. That worked after another bit of tinkering, changing the
SpamCop email address and activating the filter. I got the filter
from The Bat How Do I? instead of from the Macro, Filter and Template
library. The filters are different. If I had used the filter from the
library, the only change I needed to make was substituting my address
for Marck's in the recipient string. (BTW, the Submit Spam to SpamCop
filters in the How Do I and the library seem to be the same.)

This is a great list. Thanks to everyone who posts. I've learned a
great deal and look forward to learning more.

anyway, i checked IzyMail's web site and they suggest that for big

so is there a 'server timeout' setting in TB ??

To me, the above looks like the server has reported an error. You
couldn't have that in the log if TB timed out.

(btw ; is there really another log with more details or is this all ??)

This is all. But if you have ticked View / Log panel, you will see
only the last line of the log. So there is a hint that there was an
error, and you can check the log for any further info (as you did).

as a work-around i reduced the size of the picture and then it got thru, so
size and time to transfer indeed seem to be the problem ...

My first guess is that the server limits the message size.

Re: Address book entries not working after converting from Eudora

2003-02-09 Thread Jim Kilgannon
I tried the solution, and it will work to a degree, but it will
require touching every single group, massaging them all into CSV or
TXT files, and then importing them. That just isn't a reasonable
solution.

I'm still looking for a way to move the address books I had under
Eudora containing the addresses and groups out from under the
Personal Address Book where TB put them. That would probably be the
ultimate solution.

TB does advertise that it converts Eudora which is why I moved. I even
paid for 5 copies so that I could convert a few family members too.
But not converting address book entries correctly may make me
reconsider. I'm beginning to think I should have waited to closer to
the end of the 30 day trial before shelling out the hard cash.

P.S. Actually Roelf, I did cancel a meeting to 700 people who I'd not
emailed to before as a group. We have a newsletter, regular meetings,
and a discussion list somewhat like this one we use. (Not everyone is
on the discussion list). Regular email to the members isn't something
we do very often. Just don't have that need at the moment. I don't
believe I did it more than 5 - 6 times last year - twice due to
weather.

 Hallo Jim,

 On Sat, 8 Feb 2003 14:27:53 -0500GMT (8-2-03, 20:27 +0100, where I
 live), you wrote:

 Yes.

JK and then create a group, and then associate each individual email
JK address with the group.

No, I'd go the other way around. Create a group and add members to it,
 but that's a minor issue.

JK For example, if a club I was associated with had 10,000 members,
JK and I wanted to send them all an email from the club - let's say
JK to tell them a meeting was cancelled due to a blizzard (which I
JK just did actually in Eudora), I would first have to individually
JK enter 10,000 email addresses to accomplish this? If that's the
JK case the blizzard would be over before I was done... :- This
JK can't be true.

Of course it isn't true. What you're suggesting is ridiculous. You
 wouldn't cancel a meeting with 1 people via e-mail when you'd
never mailed with them before. The concept is that you've got them in
your address book (AB) and that you maintain your AB whenever there's
a new member, a different address or a quitting member.

JK I couldn't just dump all of the email addresses from the database,
JK and paste them into a group somehow?

Yes you could, depending on the database you've got those addresses
in. It would mean that that you processed all those addresses to
address book entries associated with a single group.

JK But Roelof's images raise another question. When TB converted my
JK Eudora address lists, it dropped each of the address books, which
JK each contained groups, I had under TBs 'The Personal Address
JK Book.' How do I move them out from under it? I tried cutting and
JK pasting with no success.

Cut and paste works for me when transporting AB-entries from one group
to another, so I suppose that's not what you meant.
It's possible that the concept behind TB's and Eudora's ABs are so
different that it's not possible to do a really good conversion.

But let's start from the beginning. You've got a database with 1
blizzard evaders. Can you export that list to a csv-file (csv = comma
separated value), that means you've got a file that contains per
 member one line containing:
first name, last name, e-mail address
 If so, export to that
and import that into your AB
First create the AB-group 'No more blizzards'
 Select that group and do
  File - Import from - Comma-separated
That ought to do the trick.

I'm still looking for a way to move the address books I had under

Personal Address Book where TB put them. That would probably be the
 ultimate solution.

You can drag and drop individual or selections of addressbook entries
into groups within an addressbook, or to a new addressbook. In your
situation, I might be tempted to create a new addressbook for each
group (which you can then associate with individual TB Accounts), and
then drag and drop the entries from your personal addressbook into the
one you have created. I started off with one addressbook, but I have
since created 4 separate addressbooks to keep work contacts separate
from personal ones. Some of the individual addressbooks have groups
within them. It might be simplest to start import process again, and
import the Eudora groups one at a time, and immediately drag the
imported addresses from the personal addressbook into a new
addressbook.

The selection of multiple entries in the addressbook for drag and drop
does not work very well, by the way! You have to select all the
entries (using [ctrl]+[click] or [shift]+[click], but in order to
drag the group, you have to start dragging from the last entry you
clicked on (the currently selected one). If you click on one of the
other highlighted entries, the selection is lost, and you drag just
that entry.

** Stock essay about top posting. **

Top posting means that you put the cursor at the top of a reply and
type everything you want to say there.

Top posted replies make messages harder to read than they should be.

When you are having a private conversation and you know what you're
saying to an individual top posting has a certain validity (I still
don't do it - I don't find it at all pleasant to read that way, but
this isn't about my personal preferences).

When you are in an environment where many readers and many topics
are present at once, you force everyone to read your reply text
(because it's at the top, it's seen first), think to themselves
What's that about then?, scroll down to read the quotes for
context, think Oh, I see... now I know what it's about, does that
change anything in what I read first?, and scroll back up to read
what you wrote in the light of improved context.

It's much easier for the writer, yes. But email should be designed
for the reader.

A reply works better broken down conversationally:
___
 Someone makes this point.. (snipped)

A reply is made with this response.

A point made two messages back (snipped)

and this was said to make someone think

Which leads to this summary.
¯¯¯
Only contextually relevant text remains. It is easy to read and
follow the conversation without having to scroll up and down or
think too hard or read more than once.

Also, since the text is trimmed to the bare bones to facilitate the
conversation, there's no worry about excess or untrimmed quotes.

Hello Marck,

Mine is set Manual and non-Active. Works every time.

It may be that different TB versions behave differently. I, like
Jurgen, need to have the filter set to Manual and Active.

Okay. Sorry if it wasn't clear enough for you.

j just tell me do this

Do this:

Quote *only* what's relevant.
Delete *everything* that isn't.
Put your responses within, not above, the quoted text - like I have.

That's the style used in this list. It's also a style that makes
conversational message threads a whole lot easier to follow.

j or don't do this

Don't just hit reply and start typing.
Don't leave masses of irrelevant quoted text in the message.

j As for the SpamCop filter forget it,

You asked the question about it... I thought you were looking for an
answer.

j I was looking back through some past email's and agree with the
j argument that I would just be wasting my time reporting spam to
j spamcop

Nobody made that argument that I could see. They said that bouncing
mail was a waste of time. SpamCop makes life hard for spammers with
little effort from us. I don't consider it a waste of time.

Okay, I'll try, this is my first attempt.

Nobody made that argument that I could see.

There was a message that I noticed when I was searching the archives
trying to figure out how to get the filter to work because of
incomplete instructions (no offense, its just you gurus think everyone
is as smart and as knowledgeable as you are.) And the person mentioned
that he had tried SpamPal, SpamCop, etc.. etc.. and come to realize
taht theBats filters was just as efficient.

Isn't this a bug? What I mean is, if this is correct behaviour, I

Thanks a lot Marck! I'm just afraid it won't work completely for me as
my username is an e-mail address to be submitted with %40 instead of @
(myname%40domain.com:password). If I enter it like this, the % is
removed in the output. I understand the % has a certain function here,
so how do I make the filter actually display the % sign in the batch
file?

Too bad I cannot actually test the filter right now because SpamCop is
down for maintenance as they say...

Usually escaping it with another % works. So if you need %40, you type
%%40. (I didn't try it.)
