I occasionally get seemingly random missorts from the filters.
Re-filtering corrects it in those cases. In other cases "Test Filters"
is a useful tool to work out what went awry.

Ah! Grayed out therefore ignored by my visual cortex. Since you were able to
actually tick or un-tick that box, yours must not be grayed out. No combination
of ticked and un-ticked boxes would un-gray that option for me.

The only times I can recall having a message land in the wrong folder is when
the sender changed something, which had been static, upon which I had been
filtering. An examination of the filter and the errant message usually reveals
the problem.

I find it useful if a message turns up in an unexpected folder. If the

That feature has existed in every TB! version I have used, from
whatever v2.x I started with in 2004 up to the v4.0.38 I use now.
Maybe they deliberately or accidentally removed it on a newer version.

If nobody here knows, perhaps somebody on TBBeta can tell you.
Or maybe RITlabs themselves.

Which boxes did you have ticked when clocking the OK button?

In my version, with just the "incoming mail" and "re-filter selected
messages only" boxes selected, for a single message in my TBUDL
folder, clicking "OK" gets me two dialog boxes.

The first has a title of "test results" and a body text of "Processed
by: The Bat! User Discussion List. Actions performed: Moved to the
folder \\[Path to]\The Bat! User Discussion List. That dialog box also
has an "OK" button and when I click, the box disappears and shows the
second one that was hidden behind it. (My filter and my folder for
TBUDL messages are both called "The Bat! User Discussion List")

That one's title is "Test filters" and its body text is "Messages
processed: 1. Messages Filtered: 1. Re-filtering complete." There are
"Close" and "Help" buttons.

For what it's worth, ticking the "log filtering results" box appears
to make no difference. The results of the "Test Filters" function do
not appear in the account log. Maybe they are written to another file
somewhere, but I have never felt the need to look for one.

That works OK, thanks for the tip. I have looked at the log but failed
to see the additional usage it could be put to. Maybe if something as
elegant as Fortes implementation isn't forthcoming a mention in the
help as to how the log might be used for looking at filters could be
added? thanks MAU

I see the same, which is not really telling me how a message was
routed to that folder. I was expecting something that showed the

Right-click any message in The Bat! and select "Test Filters." You can
find out the name of each filter that would process the message, and
what action would be taken by the filter. (I say "would" because it
tests using the current filter set, and you may have added, deleted,
or edited filters since that message came in.) As well as testing the
message against incoming filters you can also test it against read,
replied, or outgoing filters. Not pretty tables like your screenshot,
but probably just as useful. I use it sometimes if a message appears
in an unexpected folder, or to test after editing/adding filters.

lots of folders and the occasional complex filter I feel this would be
an extremely useful addition to The Bat!

[Feature request] disable auto-detection of S/Mime certificate to allow eID signatures

2010-01-05 Thread Stephane Bouvard
Hi,

A small request i've already made a couple of time... just a hope that it
could reach the right people at Ritlabs :)

Could it be possible to manualy select a S/Mime certificate to sign an eMail ?

In Belgium, we use an eID : the electronic identity card, with this card we can
use an officially certified certificate to sign our documents like emails...
the problem with TheBat! is that this certificate does not contain any email
address : the purpose is not to certify the email address, but the identity
(name) like a real signature, wichever email address we use... and TheBat!
when i request to sign an email try to automatically find a certificate with my
email address... of course it does not work : TheBat! does not find the right
certificate as it does not contain my EMail address, and thus TheBat! refuse to
sign the message... if only it could be possible to manually select a
certificate...

Of course, i *must* use the MS Crypto API and not the internal implementation,
to be able to use the external eID reader configured for the MS Api...

>From my point of view it should not be too difficult to allow that, and would

Not the same as what you have in mind, but you could right-click on the
message, choose "send to folder", choose the out-folder and there you can
edit the message.

Feature Request (or help?)

2008-01-30 Thread Steven P Vallière

There are times when I would like to open a previously
sent message, make a few changes and send it again,
sometimes to the same person(s), sometimes to others.

In Thunderbird, I'd just pick 'Edit as New' from the
Message menu, but I cannot find a similar option in TB.
The closest I can see is 'Re-send', which prompted me
about resending (I didn't) without ever offering any
opportunity to edit/adjust.

One can work around this shortcoming by creating a new
message and cut'n'pasting from the old one, but it seems
like it should be easy enough for the application to
further simplify this task, as Thunderbird has done.

If I'm missing something, please help...

If not, please consider this a feature request...

Synchronisation feature request

2004-02-22 Thread Martin Schneider
Hello,

I already did post this mail to the BETA-List but I didn't get any
answer. So I try to start a discussion in the tbudl-list. Maybe you
like my idea, maybe not.

As I have seen "The Bat" offers a synchronisation function which is
very important. But as I see the funtion so far "only" offers the data
synchronisation by "manual file exchange".

What could be a nice feature would be that the file automatically is
uploaded on a ftp server (which everyone can configure by himself)
where some important data is stored globally (e.g. address books,
Scheduler, etc.) In theory even mails could be stored there, however
this would mean a lot of data transfer. Therefore an IMAP account is
more useful. But the rest of the data (or the data you want - you
need) could be put on a FTP server that you even can access the
calendar or addressbook from different computers - without "thinking"
of doing the synchronisation.

What do you think about that?

I do not find it easy but then again I have multiple accounts (yea, more than
any normal person should have). Since the bat is doing "nice" things for us
(like sign our name) I thought it could alert me to which account is having the
problems... The other option I guess I could do is record 30 different wave
files, go into 30 different setup configs, and set up the error tone to play my
unique wave file... but I got the bat so I could continue to be lazy (hehe)

TF> Or does it?

My opinion: what problem?

TB! programming / functionality should not be limited by some glyphs
grid size. Adjust it, give it some version number, whatever to identify
it. Then the TB version using the extended glyphs can test the
glyphs-version and either accept or reject it. An older version should
not accept anything beyond 'what's defined for it' anyways (called 'good
programming', in other words: don't accept anything the program doesn't
don't know of), so there should be no problem there.

Version numbering / identification for _whatever_: the key to prevent
problems. Implementing the available information correctly is the next
key (accept / reject).

I think a red '@' is less intrusive (just informative) than a whole
'line' being marked. Also, marking a whole line may be confusing now the
new folder-color-groups seem to withstand beta tests.

Maybe the programmers find some way to accomplish this.

Sure, as in 'back to normal' being either 'no new/unread mail' (black)

Colors are a great way to draw attention to screen objects. Far more effective
than most other factors, and this has been scientifically proven. One problem
I can see with this scenario is that the user might have to scroll up/down the
account tree if they are all expanded, and the offending account might not be

Apart from this. The log panel at the bottom of the screen has always seemed

what it picks out from the log files to display, but it wouldn't be too
difficult to tack on an account name to that error. As it stands, I find it

No; I have the same problem as Scott. I get the error sound, but then
I have to open the logs for currently 12 accounts (others have more)
to see which account it was that failed to pick up mail.

What he is asking for, and I second that, is an easy way to determine
which account has a problem. If this is done by colouring the account
name (not folder name), I would also think that the colour should be
changed back to normal when the mail check is successful the next
time. However, I'm not a friend of many colours on one screen, but a
pop-up is even more annoying, and I have no other idea how to make it
easy to determine which account failed.

Heh... fancy that... They have two menus with the same options, the
second one having an additional option. Although I can see why,
they're trying to build a tree to match the list of menus based on
what you get when you do certain things. I only looked under the
system tray pop-up... Didn't think to go any further as I'd have
assumed they'd be mapped to the same functions. Which would be a
logical assumption I guess... "Send for all accounts" should be the
same whether it from the system tray, or when you are reading a
mail... I'd have thought anyway... :)

You have an idea here, but it is easier than you think:

Go into the shortcut editor and assign a shortcut to "Send + Check
for All". It's under [Info} Send/Receive drodown.

BTW, @TaskControl: The shortcut editor is under View and not under
Tools, as one would expect.

Simple, just press F11

Whenever you miss a shortcut for a function that's already in TB, you
can assign it with the shortcut editor: View - Edit shortcuts

As a quick fix, I think you could check the combined send and receive

Nothing. But there are times when even _me_ is to k.o. to "translate"

OK, I was so crazy writing my own Base64-en/decrypter for better

TF> Am I making sense?

You seem to be describing a sort of like 'common filter' system
dialog.

You define your common filters in this dialog. You then add them as
needed to your various accounts. If you need to make a change to a
common filter, it would then propagate to all the accounts where the
filter is added.

This system would be easier than the current one, only in so far as
updating or changing the filter is concerned, wouldn't it? You still
have to go to each account and add it, the same as copy and pasting
in the current system.

Global filters really should be just a matter of creating the filter
and whammo, it works on all accounts. No need to be adding them to
each account. If you need anything other than this, then go the
currently implemented method of copying and pasting the filter to
the accounts which you wish the filter to be applied.

Hm. I would think in each account you give each global filter a
position (or not, if you don't want the filter to be applied to that
account). In a central location, maybe under QuickTemplates, you
update/maintain the global filters centrally, and each update of
course applies to each account in which this global filter is in the
filter list, and exactly at the position in the order of filters where
the global filter is mentioned.

With regards to spam filtering, it's best to place the spam filters
at the bottom of the incoming filters list. In this way, TB!
checks messages last with the spam filters.

If you used a global filter, how would TB! know where to apply the
filter. In fact, it may very well apply global filters first.

I do have a few filters that could be applied globally. However,
I wouldn't do so with my spam filter since it's position in the
filter list is important.

I hadn't heard about this program before although I know about spam

work very well. It doesn't catch all spam but I'd say about 90%, and
it is very easy to setup.

A DOS program

If you have installed POPFile you should have aPOPFile Program group
in Star/Programs. There you have access to two versions of the manual,
one local (installed) if you click Manual and one on-line if you
select Support/POPFile Manual.

To configure POPFile you have to select "POPFile User Interface" from
the same Program group. The UI is in HTML and will show in your

I'm only interested in Bayesian classification and that is only one of
the options in Spampal (actually a plugin if I recall) and I also
found POFile easier to manage and more accurate but, like English
speaking people say, YMMV :)

Re[2]: Plug-in/Feature Request to allow one to define a plugin todo something on a message or group of messages

2003-02-21 Thread James Olsen
Hello Al,

AJ> Could you share your spam filters with the group? It seems I am
AJ> constantly adding words and I know there must be another, simpler way.

I'm doing this a bit differently. Instead of trying to invent my own
spam filters (reinvent the wheel, again), I'm using some free tools
that are available. My mail is scanned for "spamability" on my linux
box using the free Spam Assassin (www.spamassassin.org) and MIME
Defang tools (www.roaringpenguin.com). By the time TB downloads my
messages they've already been assessed for SPAM probability. But those
of you without an email server you can add antispam software to,
you're in luck. There's also free Win32 version that you can very
easily use with ANY email client called SAProxy
(http://saproxy.bloomba.com/). It will scan messages and flag them as
SPAM (based on your configuration) as they are downloaded from your
server to your client. I use this to filter my work email, since my
employer doesn't have any spam filtering system in place. To use it
simply change two things in your email client configuration and voila,
now all of your incoming mail is scanned for Spaminess, and marked up
accordingly (rewriting subject, adding a hidden header line, or
whatever you configure it to do). Then you can add a filter to TheBat
to act on this flag (if header X-SPAM: Yes exists, then automatically
delete message, for example). Works very, very well.

Spam Assassin uses more than looking for keywords like "sex" and
"viagra", etc. It will look for things like SHOUTING TOO MUCH, as seen
on tv, subjects with numbers at the end, too many recipients, unlisted
recipients, click here to remove, etc. etc. Heck, this message might
get flagged just because it contains to many phrases. It also looks
for things like single-image HTML emails (the latest trick by spammers
to get around keyword filters), HTML emails with too much red text,
etc. Someone else is already trying to keep ahead of spammers, I don't
have the time to update it myself. Plus, it can optionally plug into
the Razor and other RBL databases which lets you fingerprint messages
and compare incoming messages to a database of known spam messages. It
also lets you reject emails from known spam-only hosts.

This is all stuff TB filters can't handle, can't handle very well, or
would be a complete bear to set up and maintain. So I'll let my email
server or SAProxy on my desktop determine if it thinks the message is
SPAM or not, and then I'll filter in TB based on what SpamAssassin
determines.

But the coolest tool on the horizon is contained in latest version of
Spam Assassin: Bayesian filtering. This sounds to be the most
promising *learning* method of distinguishing SPAM from "HAM" (good
messages). From what I read it has a very low (1%) false-positive
rate. That's better that practically all other tests in use at the
moment. But to make Bayesian filtering work well, you need to send it
SPAM and HAM messages so it can learn the difference. So, what I'm
ultimately looking for is a way to save messages designated as SPAM in
MBOX format with original headers. Same with my HAM messages. Then I
need to send these two mboxes to my linux box and tell Spam Assassin
to "train" itself using the latest email messages I'm feeding it. It's
this training process I would like to automate.

Anyhow, I thought you might find all that interesting... :)

First - specific filters - those who know me and I know - move to
various folders.
Then - Anyone in my address book - move to Inbox
Next - non-specific filter - catch those directly to me *except*
some special. Here is that filter:

BeginFilter
Name: To Me
Active: 1
Source: \\Inbox
Target: \\Inbox
CopyFolder: none
MainSet: 10silverstones.com
MainSet: 21\s{3,}
MainSet: 21\$
MainSet: 31As seen on
MainSet: 01\d{4,}
MainSet: 31EXTRA INCOME?
MainSet: 31adult site
MainSet: 21Mortgage Rates
MainSet: 20Money for webmaster
MainSet: 50Bat!
MainSet: 00expedia
Actions: faoRegExp,faSetColor
ColourGroup: ToMe
EndFilter

I add other exemptions to this (messages that *are* spam but are
directly addressed to me are rare).

Finally - anything else is spam. Move it to my anti-spam folder.

That's what I do. It's 99.99% reliable. Unlike mailwasher, it
doesn't choke and send 500 bounce messages to non-spam originators
when you unlease backlogged mail after a holiday. It just works
quietly and simply.

Hello Michael,

I downloaded SpamPal two days ago because of people on this list. It
was very easy to setup and works awesome and invisible. I put all my
spam in a spam trap folder, as suggested on the author's website.
Once a day, I go into the spam trap folder and add users to my
whitelist that got caught by accident. I believe that in a couple of
weeks, everyone I want mail from will be on my white list. Others, I
just delete for now. When SpamPal is fully setup, I'll start
forwarding things to spamcop.

You can't hold spampal responsible for a wrong configuration.

Apart from a terribly wrong configuration, I think it's quite stupid
to send a reply to a spammer.

I configured Spampal with a white list from my adressbook the first
thing after installing (being carefull to have _all_ my mailing-lists in

Is this spampal thingy something like Mailwasher so that you first
have to go into one program and download mail to mark it as spam or
whatever and then go to the mail program? If so, i'd stick with the
setup i have now.

I disagree. After one month's training Popfile is running at 99.5%
accuracy. I'm left with maybe one spam message every two days that's
not filtered into my spam folder. Impressive,

Use POPFile from http://popfile.sourceforge.net/ which takes care by
itself about "adding words", and in any language.

I don't use it myself. I am trying out some of the new plugins but
don't see any advantage over a decent set of filters.

Very few spam messages get left in my inbox. In fact, it's weeks
since I had one in there. They all get moved to my spam box. From
there, I check for "slip throughs" (real mail - for which I set up a
new exemption filter) and submit the rest to spamcop.

Looking back in my Anti-Spam trash folder, I see a maximum of 13
spams per day. That's not huge and it seems to me to be stable at
around that amount. I attribute the low number to consistent use of
SpamCop.

There are many different blacklists. Some are more aggressive than
others. I agree that they may hit some innocent people but with SpamPal
_you_ can decide what to do with the marked messages and you can
"whitelist" yourself.

With the amount of spam today I feel this is the only way to go.

PF> Yeah, much better as it has both Bayesian and blacklist lookup.

Blacklists are dangerous and don't work IMNSHO.

Anyone running a private mailserver on a dial-up has their IP listed
in the blacklists.

Anyone with the misfortune to inherit an IP address long ago
abandoned by spammers has a huge problem getting off blacklists.

Spammers seldom use the same route twice, preferring to use
non-blacklisted addresses.

In fact, the majority of folks penalised by blacklists are the
innocent.

My IP address is on the relays.osiris blacklist as a dialup and I am
unable to send mail to some folks. Not without switching to use my
ISP's server instead of my own. I prefer to use my own - I know when
mail is not getting through and messages *never* disappear on my ISP
servers.
