Jack
Move your mail directory from APDATA to MY Documents Restart the bat and mpint
the mail directory to the new location. If there is ANY issue go to windows
explorer and to your new mail folder and add yourself to the security lost with
full permissions and propagate it to all items in the folder. You can zip up
the original mail folder to the desktop for restoration in case something goes
HORRIBLY WRONG
Which it won't but you have a path to step back ward

You probably will not have to add yourself to the permission list not take
ownership of the folder
And yes, if you have permissions as ADMINISTRATOR or EVERYONE you should
logically NOT have to add your account name with full permissions. Agreed.
Microsoft Agrees. Yet it magically fixes just this type of issue

I have a small book of fixes that Microsoft swears you do not have to do yet
when you do them, the issue magically disappears

Actually Adrian what I finally ended up doing was to move all my ill-named files
from the %appdata%\roaming folder and from the Program Files (x86) folder to a
temporary desktop folder so TB! couldn't find them. Then I took the
jackADDRBOOK.INI file and renamed it to simply ADDRBOOK.INI, and then renamed
the jack.abd file to The Bat.abd and I was eventually able to get all my
addresses to appear with only the necessary files now located in the
%appdata%\roaming folder accessible to TB!.

The final proof of success was to remove the administrator privileges from the
shortcut used to start TB! and still be able to open/close both TB! and the
address book without the error message which started this thread.

The windows-version macros still don't work but that is merely an annoyance.

Once again, my profound thanks to all who contributed their knowledge.

Well, I tried what you suggested, for quite a while to no avail. Some attempts
resulted in an address book containing a single address which was to The Bat!
Team. All my personal addresses were gone. No amount of copying the
jackADDRBOOK.INI file to a couple of different locations and then loading
from those locations ever resulted in my regaining my complete address book.
Only when I loaded from the Program Files(x86) location would my addresses come
back.

So, for the moment I'm giving up. I had already given the TB! shortcut
permission to run as an administrator which solved the original problem in the
first post.

It's entirely possible I'm doing something wrong (as is my wont) but I'll never
know without further experimentation, which scares the squat out of me.

Nevertheless, I appreciate your help.

I have a better idea. Put it in a directory you create yourself,
ideally on a different partition from the Windows partition, and
not in any of the directories created by Windows itself.

I believe the escelated privileges on the Program Files folders was added in
Windows 8. Personally, I consider this a good thing, Program Files should only
contain the files necessary to run applications. Data for an application should
be stored in the Registry or in the current user's "home" directory. This is a
very similar set up to the *nix operating systems. The added benefit is, when
backing data up, you should only have to worry about backing up your user's
home directory.

Good luck!

I was almost ready to change my account to administrator when I checked User
Accounts in Control Panel. It shows me as an administrator already, prompting
yet
another brain meltdown (if I'm already an administrator, why wouldn't TB! run
properly?)

I queried the web about administrator accounts in Windows 10 and found this
interesting URL:
http://www.ghacks.net/2014/11/12/how-to-enable-the-hidden-windows-10-administrator-account/
It explained that there are two administrator accounts in Win 10, one of which
is not initially enabled. My account is the one that is enabled but gets UAC
prompts. The other one apparently does not. So, in the interest of safety I've
elected to tolerate the UAC prompts from now on and will not enable the other
administrator account.

Thanks for your help and concerns.

Nit a good idea to login to Windows with administrator rights all the
time. Apart from actual software installs, you should look very
critically at software that won't run without administrator rights
after it has been installed. Apart from CD burning software, almost

My Windows login for Windows 7 Ultimate does NOT have administrator

a different PC, but I don't see using Windows 10 as primary OS anytime soon.

Based on your email I tried running TB! as an administrator (I assumed my

So I set the shortcut properties to always run TB! as an administrator and that
part of the problem is solved.

Right now I'd settle for them running as they once did. Alas, even running TB!
as an administrator fails to correct the problem with (at least) those two
macros.

That said, the %WINDOWSPLATFORMNAME, %WINDOWSCSDVERSION macros still refuse to

In any event, thanks for helping.

Possibly a file permissions issue. Unless you are running (or running

if change the Program Mail Directory to %APPDATA%\The Bat!\ that will point it
to C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\The Bat!\. Once you've
copied all your mail folders over to this directory, you can point your Account
Home Directory(ies) appropriately.

Of course, back everything up before attempting this.

I'm just pulling this from memory, so if anyone else can confirm or fix what
I've suggested...?

Good luck!

I use Comodo as a firewall only. It is intrusive, always asking you
permission for any software to access the internet. But fortunately it
remembers and learns, so it gets easier as you go on.

Good luck!

Interesting. Is Vipre also a firewall? I've never heard of it. I
used to run ZoneAlarm for a firewall and free AVG for an anti-virus
but since I built this computer I was never able to get ZoneAlarm to

"PostMessage to NULL handle, Msg = 3021, wParam = 0, |Param=0" showed
up on start-up of TB! today.
Like you I didn't get the error message when I closed and started TB! again.

Today's lines of ex_log.txt are:
v4.2.36.4 BAILAMOS/Hyd 12-08-2010 10:30:21 ABCGrid:6 EAddrBookDuplicate
Duplicate handle

v4.2.36.4 BAILAMOS/Hyd 12-08-2010 10:39:31 ABCGrid:6 EAddrBookDuplicate
Duplicate handle

And no, "PostMessage to NULL handle, Msg = 3021, wParam = 0, |Param
=0" is not present in ex_log.txt for today.

"EAddrBookDuplicate" is a regular occurrence in the log (so I should maybe look
into that) but the error message is new.
I have this, though:
v4.2.36.4 BAILAMOS/Hyd 22-06-2010 14:08:34 Finder:Searching
\\catch-...@hyd.dk\e-zines\biozonen EPostMessageZeroHandle PostMessage to NULL
handle, Msg = 3039, wParam = 3, lParam = 13
...and two similar ones, both containing "Finder:Searching".

Any solutions or good advice?

TB expects the number 354 in front of that text. The server probably
gives that signal, since it wouldn't work any other way with any other
client. The fact that you don't always get those signals point to the
possiblities of you having a bad connection with your ISP or that
you're running an smtp proxy that's a tad out of sync with the
servers.

You can't. In a plain text message the links just "are", there's no need
to indicate that it's a link. In HTML, on the other hand, you have to
say that what you mean to be a link really is a link.

Your link showed fine here, and the only way I could manage to make it
unshowable was to use the HTML-editor and send a non-linked URL. So I am
as baffled as anyone else as to the reason why it acts as it does.

In the Edit Mail Message Window, there is a row of icons; select font
and size and such thing. (If you don't see it, make sure you are in the
HTML-editor, then go to the View menu and check HTML Toolbar.) In this
row there is an icon that looks like a globe and a paper clip -- that's

Send messages to yourself, using the different editors, then read the
messages using the different users.
But to save you the trouble I just did that, and found that if you send
using the HTML-editor you must add hyperlinks using the "Add hyperlink"
icon if the HTML-viewer is to see them as a hyperlink otherwise it
thinks they are plain text.

You could open a new message addressed to me, find the problem message
you sent to your friend and drag and drop it into the new message
window. Just left click and hold the message entry in the message
list. Drag and drop it in the editor window. Then send, if it's not a
sensitive message. :)

I could then look at it as is and give you a better impression of what
is happening.

Me neither. I've noted that the context sensitive help doesn't work
in some places.

No. You wouldn't need to.

I was just giving btw information on how to upgrade your installation
if and when you so wish. You don't have to uninstall first. In fact,
doing that could create difficulties with lost settings etc.

Try the Folder | Maintenance | Check Integrity/Repair option. That's
worked for me in the past. The message database files are stored as
linked lists. Every so often the links can get damaged, especially (in
my experience) if you have attachments stored in-line. The Repair
option seems to do a good job of fixing up the links most of the time.
If you've got more serious damage than that, it may be time to bring
up a hex file editor and patch the links yourself.

The file name is messages.tbi. Delete it while TB is not running, and
then open TB and open that folder. A new messages.tbi file will be
created.

Be aware that the index file contains information such as whether any

you accounts directory on disk. Exit TB!, go to your Mail directory and
find the corresponding folders directory. Delete the messages.tbi file.

Re-reading the folder means selecting the folder after restarting TB!
and letting TB! recreate and rebuild the index file.

BTW,

You need to include a signature delimiter in your messages. This
consists of a , i.e., a '-- ' by itself on a
line. This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without
the signature and list footers since everything below and including the
sig delimiter is excluded when quoting.

Mine looks different because of the PGP Signature but there are macros
available to compensate for this and make users able to reply without
quoting anything below the altered delimiter.

A _working_ wolution is to delete all address book entries you've
recently imported and re-import them, WITHOUT the birthday.
The birthday field has to be in a well defined format (which I can't
remember right now from the top of my mind) and for example OE-export
uses a different one.
So either import w/o birthday dates or edit the exported file and make
all birthday dates be in the correct format (could have been MMDD,
but that's not 'knowledge' it's only 'guessing').

P.S.: Marck: ain't it time to put this really frequently asked question
into FAQ? I've just searched the archive and a run for "invalid argument
for date encoded" reveals nothing (albeit it should, but it seems the
search algorithm ain't that good)

Addresses don't need a @ to be valid. The @ is only needed to tell at
which server the owner of that address can be found. When the intended
recipient is located at the same server as you, there is no technical
reason whatsoever to use the @domain.tld after the username.
You have to admit that it's a bit difficult to identify for you which
addresses are at the same server as you and which aren't.

Not always. If he is using a domain name that his ISP aren't allowing

relaying from the domain they are associated with.

Yes, my next idea would be to look at the message headers and then at

I ran into the same problem (even though the partition that The Bat
