I too always have the pins needles plus the burning/freezing all the time, but it is so much worse in the evening.. I believe that I have learned to live with it since I am able to fall asleep and stay asleep all night except to go potty at least once maybe twice. I have also been told by doctors that the pins needles in the feet is called neuropathy, which is the same nerve pain that people with diabetes suffer from. I am so relieved not to have to prepare for those classes anymore-I was associate professor of economics and commodity price behavior-the lectures, but mostly that awful bureaucratic stuff-the accreditation material, reports, the grading and grade submissions, my annual objectives . . . So many forms to goof up and be asked to do over. This disease has made filling out any kind of form an arduous task, because I always lose my way and have to start from the beginning. They took so long. And now the only big form I have to face each year is that mother of all forms, the tax form. I am looking forward very much to writing and researching. My published book is Manna from Heaven: From Divine Speech to Economic Science. it is an analysis of economic content within the best known divinely revealed books of God. Now I am writing another one, which is almost ready, that will target Sunni Muslims with an analysis of the economics of the Divine Qur'an. (I am not Muslim; I am a Baha'i). I want to start a discussion of these things among ordinary people of all Faiths-because the way the economy is going now, it is not serving the best interests or needs of the majority of peoples in the world, and I can't imagine that God would leave us in the dark on this subject. And, what I found is that there is a tremendous amount of economic content in the divinely revealed Words of God. They haven't been economically analyzed because economics is only about 100 years old as a formalized academic discipline. Anyway, I am packing now and pretty happy. I am over the sting of being pushed out, and that quiet but palpable air of dismissiveness from bosses and some colleagues alike. Suddenly you are like a dead man walking, and they don't want to be around you. They look the other way, as if being dismissed were a contagion they must avoid. You know what I mean. As disabled persons we encounter it every day on the street, in the check-out line, and the restroom. The staff-secretaries, cleaners, janitors-are different. They come up to you and ask how you are, and say that they will miss you and are sad to see you go. I think that if when I die, such persons show up to my funeral, I will have perhaps not been too bad. Our colleagues and relatives, these must show up, so it doesn't mean much. But if ordinary workers who don't owe you anything, if they show up, then you have been not too bad as a person. So back to packing-and ice cream with almonds, walnuts, fudge sauce. Thanks everyone, you mean a lot to me. How could I have gotten along so long alone over here without your help and friendship?! We are very good friends and have a better relationship than when we were married. Here is a short version she wrote explaining what has been happening to her. many of you know she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer years ago: here is her latest condition. She needs all our prayers to survive this for any length of time. Thank you and Sincerely, Bernie Have been on a couple of different oral chemotherapies since first discovering the cancer in 2005 - Arimidex for a long time, 'til it apparently stopped working (when I had the double mastectomy in late 2008), and Xeloda, which also did not work. This week I'll have my second round of Taxotere. Couple of weeks after the first round, my hair started falling out, so now I'm shaved bald! I've lost about 80 pounds, which is skinniest Ive been in about 30 years! I look normal to myself because spent greater portion of my life closer to this weight, but my appearance is apparently shocking to those who haven't seen me in awhile. I get short of breath easily and my voice is hoarse most of the time. I've already outlived the median life expectancy of 3 years for my diagnosis (stage 4 breast cancer), so plan to keep it up as long as I can! Chemo makes me tired, so I sleep a lot. It's a funny kind of limbo... Now I see why didn't want to write this - it's depressing! How does one write about cancer in an upbeat way? Anyway, I don't spend time wringing my hands moaning. Enjoy myself doing what I want each day and I get lots of rest! That's all for now.. Pray for me and keep my in your happy thoughts.

I have stiff man syndrome, or stiff person SPS. It is an autoimmune disease similar to all these others, only it attacks a place in the brain that makes tie chemical that transmits signals to the voluntary muscles. People with this can get attacks from stress, loud noises, too much stimulation, or just minding their own business. It is progressive with all the muscles finally getting involved. But I may have what they call an indolent case, which means it wont progress too fast, and I can get my work completed. Nice to have a time line!!! We really desire prayer. The family, especially the immediate family, is really going through it. The second concern is for Dale and Brenda Smith. Like most on this list, Dale has a neurological condition but I don't know what the diagnose turned out to be. He was once a skinny, athletic, healthy young man with a wife and two kids. He had a neurological reaction to medication and lost the use of everything below the waist, his speech, and most likely suffered brain damage. Dale's home was also wiped clean. He was bed ridden and could not move. The tornado blew him and his mother, a home health care nurse, across the yard, across the road and into a ditch. It then dropped large tree on top of their bodies. It was dark, no one could see. People stood up from the rubble that used to be homes and started trying to get their barrings. Two people from two different directions heard Dale's deep moaning and Brenda's unconscious screaming. I will not detail the damage that suffer because many would probably be offended that I shared. Their bodies were seriously injured in ways that you can't imagine. Dale lost a leg. Both had to have multiple surgeries to their face, head, eyes, and other places. Neither are doing well. Brenda is still unconsciously. There are many in our home area that did not survive this event. Tuscaloosa is getting national attention AS IT SHOULD. However, there were S many small communities that were impacted - one after another after another. One can simply drive 5 miles down the road to the next small community and see the same disaster. Some places were hit by 1/2 mile size F3 to F4. Others got the blunt of an F5 size as the twister changed sizes. One friend video'd the thing and promised to send it to me. There is clearly a large wedge shape tornado in the blue sky. On the right is a large twister. To the left is a smaller twister. To one's dismay, the blackness of large wedge and large twister began to come closer until they are one big black mass. Then the same happens on the left side until it is one unbelievable large mass. Then the entire screen is black and all one can see in the video is occasionally lightening inside the monster.

Re: [TMIC] Connected?
I am also very concerned about you Dalton as I read through your posts. Is there a possibility that your doctor would consider consulting with Dr. Greenberg at UT Southwestern Med Center, Dallas, Texas? I went to the Symposium Sept 24-26, 2010 held in Dallas. Our very kind and generous Jim Lubin has placed the Symposium videos on the TMA site. Have you had a chance to watch any of them? I'm just trying to find a way here to get you some much needed help. Maybe the 2 doctors could brainstorm by email/phone or whatever, and possibly agree to try another approach that would work better for you. I'm not even sure if I've explained that very well, but it certainly could not hurt if your doctor would be willing to consult with one of our specialists here in the states. There are many of our TM friends who are doing this now or have done it in the past. Your TM symptoms/residuals/relapses - not sure what to call them - are unique. You need additional help and I'm sure your doctor is frustrated. I hope at least some of this makes sense. I have always understood, and have read somewhere, perhaps on this list or the TM Journal, that we have the onset of TM experiences (lesions on the spinal cord) which for most of of us is a one-time occurrence with possibly lasting symptoms, AND we have times of exacerbation brought on by physical or mental overexertion, maybe an illness such as even a cold and so on (I have worse banding from sitting too long or standing too long) which are not caused by further damage to the spinal cord but worsening of symptoms at least temporarily. Re: [TMIC] TM
I was scheduled to start PT that day, but therapist wouldn't let me start before she examined me because she saw that my gait was really off ~ She worked on me for about 2 hours, and then I started my aqua therapy and did that for about 6 months. That helped me a lot! Long drive though, so I'm looking for something closer to home. And as of today my legs are still the same length. (short! because I'm a very tall 5' 2 : ) Are you now or have you been walking with a cane? When I'm tired and have little energy, I have no business being any place except my house because I know that's really hard on my entire body. True for all or most of us, I'm sure. Oh my gosh Gunny. First of all, very thankful to hear that you got to the Hospital in time! I'm sure it was no picnic having a stent put in your clogged artery. Right Right and Right on each of the areas of our lives that need to be cleaned up, if that's what we're guilty of. I have to ask - had you been having any shortness of breath or chest pain - or any symptoms at all? I'm just so glad you're okay. You've got another artery to get taken care of, so please take it easy and follow docs orders. You're a great guy who is always willing to help us all and we love you lots. No reason why, except that maybe I needed a break from all of the talk of the “blusey” side of the disease. I try to maintain a positive attitude, but since the death of my best TM friend, Pam Montz, I needed a long break before I could once more become an active participant of the group like I used to be. For new members, I have had TM for somewhat more than eight years, can’t recall due to memory dysfunction, and other related symptoms of TM, for one being a difficulty in typing, where I used to be a whiz...maybe just a matter of continuing to do it on a regular basis. I am paralyzed from T3 (breast level with the use of my arms, Thank God.) I have horrible continuous pain from T3 on the Spinal Column to the tips of my toes. I am not able to walk, use a wheelchair to get around and spend a lot of time in bed just because of laziness. We have no children and do not have a large social group and no family to speak of. My husband wanted property so we moved out of our living area where we had resided forever, to a small, and I mean “small” village where we have 5 acres and a nice two story home, which we bought before I became ill. Now, the house makes no sense whatsoever and I am able to use only a small portion of it; my bedroom, which used to be the den, the kitchen/dining area and living room. I have spent so long in my bedroom that I have forgotten what the rest of the house looks like. It’s either that or the memory difficulties which I just two days ago began taking meds to, hopefully, reverse the dysfunction. OK, that’s all I can muster for my first time back. What’s going on with all of my old friends? Let me know. I love you all, Jude Anyway, I make use of the three rooms, but my husband does all of the cooking and eats in my room with me, and he takes care of all of the remaining household chores that I cannot do because of the constant intense pain I experience 24/7. I have pain meds, but hate to take them because they turn me into a “zombie” and it affects most of my “normal” human existence, as it is. Most of you know what I mean, the rest of you will catch on the longer you have TM and continue to read these excerpts.

We recorded a song called Rama Lama Ding Dong. Anyway, I was talkin with Harry Green (2nd Tenor), and Marshall Sewel (Bass) the other night, and we discussed George (Wydell) Jones who passed away two years ago. George was the lead singer with us. Marshall asked what was wrong with me using a cane, so I told him. He asked if that was anything like Polio and I told him the difference, and started complaining. He said, Ya know, Doc Had Polio. Doc who I asked. He said Doc Pomus who's real name was Jerome Felder. I never met him but Marshall had so he related this story. Doc contracted Polio as a child way back and in his early years, and was confined to a wheel chair. It seems he and his wife were at an awards ceremony where Doc was watching his wife dance with other guys that they of course knew, so Doc penned a song for her as he watched called Save the last dance for me. If anyone here is old enough, the Drifters recorded that back in the early 60's. Check out the Drifters on You Tube, click on save the last dance for me, and listen to the words. Just goes to show what you can do if you set your mind to it. He wrote a ton of other hits also, but this one especially hit home with me. Something I never knew before. I guess we never stop learning.

Re: [TMIC] hello out there
This is what I have been told also. My lesions can still be seen but they are inactive (C4,5,6). I was told they are like a scar. However, I've seen posts where others have been told something different. Dalton, I still have all the residuals - burning, banding, weakness - it's just that some days are better than others. It's going on 9 years for me. Hope you get to feeling better! We missed you. And I missed you. Glad to have you back with us. I have a question for everyone. A recent set of MRIs showed that my spine in the thoracic was clear with no lesions or swellings. It has been one year since the diagnosis for TM. Do these lesions clear up later on, or did somebody make a mistake somewhere? Because my everyday symptoms are still weakness and pain from fingers to just above the elbow, and from toes to above the knees with banding and burning in the torso and back. And if I exercise at all, the next day I am in for day-long spasms that leave me housebound and often unable to get around without assistance of my dear part-time maid and helper. It looks like some support was needed for you guys and maybe for some just lurking and not feeling up to writing in. Believe me, I sympathize with you and your pain. This time of year, when it's cold in many parts of the country and world, my symptoms get worse also. It seems that some of us have symptoms that are exacerbated by the cold and some by heat. The barometric pressure can affect many. Mine are much worse in the cold, and especially if it's rainy. My skin can be warm to the touch, but I can feel cold to the bone (as I say). I actually think that it may be the nerves that are cold and it is so hard to warm up again. It can be really painful. I get under the blankets and also wrap my legs in blankets, sometimes a heated one, and pray it goes away soon, but I can only do that when I'm at home. I try not to go out of the house unless absolutely necessary during this time of year, and I am sure that this is why the winter blues set in. This is something we have to be very careful of, because it can cause a lot of depression. Please be aware of this. This is another reason why it's important to keep in touch. It will take a few weeks for the videographers to edit the talks, but Jim will be posting them online at the TMA website as soon as they are available. What was special about this one was that about a half dozen kids with TM and their parents attended, and the kids all made fast friendships, and given lots to do by our pediatric nurse, Janet Dean, who is from Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore. It is really hard for young ones to keep still and not get bored while sitting and listening to the doctors talk about bowel/bladder management, spasticity issues, optic neuritis, and all the other issues that we face. I agree with you Betty. Greg did an excellent job and I wish all physicians would watch it. Some of my family watched the show - many of them cried - To see another person go through what I did many years ago was a real eye-opener. Re: [TMIC] Medications
Re: [TMIC] MedicationsHi Dalton, I can really relate. Had them for years, and years with no explanation. Mine were not as severe as yours - I would have no warning of any kind - had them at out of town business functions (lovely), at work, waiting for a bus in downtown Seattle - I even got to spend one of my birthdays in the hospital all day because of a seizure at my office that morning. Then when TM hit they became more frequent and presented much worse. Finally got answers from a great neurologist who was on call while I was in the hospital. Was put on Lamictal and have been seizure-free since then. What drugs has your doctor given you so far? And maybe I shouldn't ask this, but I will anyway - do you have confidence in this doctor??? Re: [TMIC] Neurologist visit
Rev Craig, so glad you had a productive visit with your new neurologist. You asked about your meds. Many TMers have used most of these meds at one time or another. However, that Ropinirole threw me for a loop as I've never heard of it, so I researched it. Did your doctor give you an entire pamphlet on the medication or did she just briefly tell you about it? I ask because I've really never seen a drug quite like this. All drugs have side effects, and this one has its fair share. But what really shocked me was the very long section called: What special precautions should I follow? You really do need to read ALL of this - please. It's very important. And you're right, you never know, you may just show up in the pulpit wearing a pink tutu and a glittery tiara! We'd like a picture of that please : ) Has anyone else here used this drug called Ropinirole or googled it? Please post if you have. Good luck to you Craig. You have a great attitude - and a great sense of humor to go along with it. Linda (Eagle, ID) - Original Message - From: Rev. The good news (according to her) is that while my TM will be with me the rest of my life, it will not get progressively worse because she says TM is not a degenerative disease. The TM can keep you from being as active as you should be so over time many people with TM lose a lot of strength and function. That has happened to me. The bad news is that I do have a type of neuropathy which will get progressively worse and there is really nothing to be done with it except control the symptoms. Bottom line according to her? I will probably not live until I am 90, and as time goes by I will have less and less neural control over my extremities. So my neurologist has started me on some meds she says I should have been on all along but I should also stay on the ones I am on currently. The mixture of all these different drugs might be interesting. Who knows, some Sunday morning I may show up in the pulpit wearing a pink tutu and a glittery tiara. The drugs I currently take are hydrocodone, Tramadol, and Amitriptyline. She has added gabapentin 300mg and Ropinirole 0.5mg. If anyone has anything they think I should know about these last two meds, I would appreciate it. BTW, she said she was already aware of, and read up on, TM. Rev. Re: [TMIC] changes
Hi Barbara, Great information you gave Kevin. You suggested group therapy and that you had done it yourself. Are you talking about for depression? If so I can see how that would be very beneficial to physically be with others who share the same or similar depression issues. Is this what you meant and if so how did you get involved in a group therapy? Sorry if this is obvious to everyone else except me - I just haven't heard of it. It looks like you are finally getting some services and some medications. Looks like you are on the right track. I'm so thrilled to hear that you are getting physical therapy and the anti-depression meds. Who knows how much better you'd be if you would have gotten this long ago, but at least you are getting them now. It's hard work, but I hope that you will see some reward from the therapy. If you can get strong enough to get out again, a group therapy may be a good situation for you. I did that for quite some time prior to moving here and it helped me so much with my depression. I should do it again, as I find myself slipping every now and then, like several times a year, and not pulling myself out too easily. It's hard to start, but once you do, you'll find that you don't want to miss it. I found that I felt that I was helping others and in turn it felt like I was helping myself. No noticeable change yet, but I know it can take several weeks. At least no bad side effects like I had with Lyrica and Cymbalta. I'm also getting physical therapy at home three days a week, which is kicking my butt, (fatigue, pain), and will be starting occupational therapy for my hands. Last week, my BP was low, and still is in the 100/60 area. Before that it was 120/70. I am treated for high BP and have a call in to my doctor about this. Maybe it has to do with PT after being sedentary for so long? Anyway, I'm trying to be proactive about things..not easy for me. Wishing you all the best. Kevin
Re: [TMIC] Fatigue/Cycle
Yep, Akua, can totally relate to everything you said. Since TM, I have had such trouble with my sleep, or lack thereof, that I find myself crying at the drop of a hat - Sleeping pills don't work for me. However, many people have told me about their positive experience with Melatonin. Out of sheer desperation, I talked to my pharmacist about it. He reviewed my meds and told me it would be ok to take. After 3 days I actually slept 9 hours, then 8 hours and it's been pretty consistent since. The most I was sleeping before was 3 or 4 hours, wake up and not get back to sleep for another 2 hours and only for an hour if I was lucky - and then it wasn't even a restful sleep. I have to take a nap every day. Basically no quality of life because I was so so tired all the time from not sleeping. I'm all set to go to the Symposium in Dallas and I am already worried about the long air travel, the long days at the Symposium itself and how in the world I will be able to handle all of it. Over the last couple of weeks, Mike has been very disoriented, sleeping a lot and losing weight. The MRI test that he had earlier this week indicates that the cancer has spread to the brain. We are meeting w/the Oncologist today and hopefully get more answers and find out what our course of treatment will be. I'll keep you informed as soon as we can. RE: [TMIC] Miracle of Miracles!
Great news! Hydrotherapy is amazing for the entire body. Go for it! What dosage of Amitriptyline will you be on? I took it at one time and had to titre up very slowly. It was very helpful for what was going on with my body at the time, but I couldn't handle the higher dosage. I had horrible nightmares. Again, we're all different. I sincerely hope you find relief with your new cocktail of meds. Please keep us posted. Turns out she had taken quite bit of time to study up on TM; something my former doctor never bothered to do. So we were able to discuss intelligently my symptoms, my meds, and treatment options. What a difference! She upped my hydrocodone from 5mg to 10mg, scheduled me for PT (including hydrotherapy) and she added Amitriptyline HCL. This should help me sleep and also help with depression. Has anyone had any experience with this drug? What can I expect? God bless those who care and take the time to educate themselves about what we face. [TMIC] Symposium/Dallas Sept 24-26
I'm just throwing this out there. Are any of you planning to go to the upcoming Symposium in Dallas? I had a doctor appt yesterday and took a copy of the agenda to my doc. He actually sat there and read the info, smiled and was very impressed that this was being offered and that I plan to attend. I'm due for my Rituxan infusions and he said I could hold off having them, just in case some of the doctors have come up with a better/different plan. I realize how fortunate I am to have a doctor who listens and is open to new ideas. Re: the Symposium - I do know that Louise is coming clear from Australia! Looking forward to meeting as many of the TM family as possible. Linda (Eagle, ID)

Re: [TMIC] Jude (hey Jude) Talked on Phone
Thanks for all your help, Patti. I used to talk to Jude on her cell phone, but not sure if she uses it either. I have sent her many emails, like many of you, and she never responded. However, since she is feeling so much better I sent her one the other day. Hopefully soon she will be well enough to post to the group. She has always had so much to give. Miss her. I talked with her tonight on the telephone and I'm amazed how well she sounds. Jude does not remember my visit last week. She was surprised when her husband told her I had visited. That's how sick she was. Jude remembers writing to the tmic and asking Does anyone remember jude, but she doesn't remember getting any responses. I told her to give it a try again, because we are answering and writing, but she doesn't respond to us. She might have Dave set up the laptop tomorrow. I'm going to send her a note and put something in the subject line so she recognizes me and opens my post. Jude answered when I called on her home phone. I don't know if she uses the cell phone or not. I'm going to check in on her and see if I can get some addresses on her laptop. Maybe we can get her back to helping us with her experience and intelligence. Patti - Michigan Blessings to all Patti - Michigan
Re: [TMIC] RE: tmic-digest Digest V2010 #316
Hello Rev Craig and a big warm welcome! My name is Linda and I have had TM for a little over 8 years. Lesions at C4, 5 6. Am able to get around with a cane. You have received a lot of very good information and support from the group, which is why we're all here - to share our experiences and offer support to each other. One thing I wanted to say. In the articles about TM a 2-year guideline has been used in reference to recovery. I think many of us will agree that we are still seeing improvements after many years. I certainly am, even though they may seem small, they are huge to me. Please keep posting so we know how you're doing. Bless you Linda (Eagle, ID) - Original Message - From: Rev. Craig Crossmanmailto:revcross...@gmail.com To: tmic-list@eskimo.commailto:tmic-list@eskimo.com Sent: Monday, July 26, 2010 5:16 PM Subject: [TMIC] RE: tmic-digest Digest V2010 #316 I had multiple MRI's over a four day period plus nerve conductance tests and another neuro test which showed the greatest impairment in my arms. I was blessed with a doctor who told me nothing but the truth; that there is no cure (yet) for TM and that only symptoms can be treated. And he gave me some reading material to study. One of the articles said that 80% of those diagnosed with TM end up needing a wheelchair. But I determined to be part of the 20% that don't. After I broke my back 11 years ago and had a partial spinal cord injury I was in a wheelchair for a bit over a year while I learned how to walk again. So being in one does not worry me - I managed before and I'll manage now. The hardest part was learning how to drive using hand controls. Re: [TMIC] about Jude (Hey Jude)
Thanks Patti for the update on Jude. The last time I heard from Jude was the same time - her post to TMIC. I did email her immediately but again no response, no answer on the phone either. Prior to that I spoke with Jude on the phone - she was not well. I hope you're able to visit with Jude today and will let her know how much we love and miss her. She's had a hard road. David said Jude has not been talkative lately, but I asked if I could visit with her tomorrow just to sit with her. I'm planning to visit in the afternoon.
