I'm wondering whether the compliments regarding sound quality are just due to the placebo effect, like the guys who think they get better sound and video from $50 HDMI cables than from $5 HDMI cables. SB3 did only 24/48 Touch do 24/96 And the digital output of Touch has much lower jitter and noise etc, this *may* affect sound quality, in a subtle way. If some one claim that for example bass is better with an expensive digital cable, they are victims of placebo the spdif stream does not have bass. But spdif is surprisingly analog in nature , it's from 1979 ? It's not the same as for example ethernet, which is a real network protocol and communicates in a completely different way, hey you can get music from the internet without flaws. Spdif is a real time process involving syncing the clock of the dac with a clock signal derived from the incoming spdif stream. That said, the fifo buffers and whatnots in my Meridian processor is very very good at leveling the playing field virtually to the piont where i can reliably tell between many of my digital sources. But for the Record a SB3 sound the same to me as My MeridianG98DH DVD-A drive on 16/44.1 I think but can not validate with dbt test or similar that touch is somewhat better, but placebo is reality everybody is affected. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe'Primare and Dynadio speakers (including a pair of Contour 4 ) Bedroom/Office: Boom Kitchen: SB3 + powered Fostex PM0.4 Miscellaneous use: Radio (with battery) I use a Controller various ir-remotes and a Eee-PC with squeezeplay to control this Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77478 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Order in Process is Logitech's way of saying that it hasn't been despatched yet. Once they have sent it, you should get an email with a UPS tracking number and a link so you can watch it make its way to you from Utrecht. It is still showing as in stock on the UK site, but as many of us have discovered over the last six months or so, Logitech sell things despite their online shop, and not because of it. I hope you get yours soon - it is a lovely thing to look at, use, and (above all) listen to. Hopefully they can get their distribution issues straightened out. As a point of clarification - I'm using it as a player and controller, not a server. I may do that at one point to tinker. There's the rub. The whole point of the delay was to get the Touch's built-in server working better. If you read though some of the other threads regarding painfully long scan times and outright crashes, it seems that work wasn't quite finished. I bought my Touch to use as a player with an existing server and that works great. However, I've done some tinkering with the built-in server. With a small thumb drive it worked very nicely. When I hooked up my main backup drive with 48,000 songs, it still hadn't finished a scan at 15 or 16 hours and it wouldn't play some material (M4A) that is supposed to be native. I'm a satisfied user because it does what I bought it to do, but it was sad to see reason for the delay - fixing the built-in server - still seems to have problems. I'm sure I'll tinker again, but I'm going to have to block out a good chunk of time where I don't want to play any music just to experiment. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77481 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch Icon Amp
My Squeezebox Touch came in this week and I paired it with an Icon Amp at 48W. They are a perfect little pair. The Icon is the same width as the Touch and acts as a small platform. Sounds great! Regarding the touch, it's very very nice. The UI is intuitive and responsive. Sound is great. Sync's perfectly with my three other Squeezebox Booms. I hope that Logitech makes a version of this that is just a battery powered remote. That would be a very nice replacement for the duet. Maybe they could put a small amp in the duet receiver? It would be especially nice if the Touch Remote could replace the Harmony remotes. Upgrade the IR Range Extender with Wi-Fi and now the Touch Remote could control IR and Wi-Fi devices. http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/iconamp/index.php P.S. no relationship with Icon or Logitech. -- mdecorte mdecorte's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37618 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77496 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

It is an easy way to change network settings. for example set static ip on the Touch Btw for some reason the prompt is outside the files system cd / fix that, if you want to learn some basic linux skills you can use it for that. get a good linux book (linux bible is ok) or google some shell commands like ls ( dir in dos) cd is change directory try ls -la for a more comprehensive list Your network settings is in the file interfaces /etc/network/interfaces try this # cat /etc/network/interfaces cat is a command that prints a file to the screen so now you can read it There is a text editor on-board the Touch vi it is horrible but very light just # vi file_name example: # vi /etc/network/interfaces !! google some good instructions on vi before doing this, frustration guarantee included. I used to have the SB3 connected to a Cambridge audio DacMagic and the most noticeable was the extension in base as well as channel separation. Now with the Touch, the touch comes very close to the DacMagic. The latter performs a better job in the mids and high tones as well as channel separation. I would not buy a DacMagic for it if I didn't have one yet. Agreed. The analog output from the Touch definitely sounds better (in my opinion, of course) than the SB3 it is replacing. Overall I'm very impressed with the Touch. It looks and feels excellent, and the sound quality is better than expected. I though the original SB3 was very good, but the Touch is just better all-around. I also just recently picked up an outboard DAC (my first ever) and will give it a try with the Touch. The DAC is an AMB Gamma 2. If my friend has an ipod touch can I pay for it to try it and then when I buy my iphone transfer it without paying again ? Puh. Yes, but. You need to use YOUR iTunes account to purchase the App. You could do that by connecting your friend's iPod to your iTunes and buying the App n your iTunes. This means all of your friends' music an apps will be wiped off the iPod (he can restore them later). App Store purchases are bound to the Account and you can install them on several devices (5 I believe). You will of course lose one of these devices while trying, no idea whether there's a way to reclaim that. How close is the android application to Ipeng now ? SqueezeCommander has a somewhat similar UI and also supports Squeezebox Server as well as MySqueezebox.com and the latest version works with the Touch. It doesn't support plugins, yet, but that's going to come. HTC Hero and HTC desire are very desirable. I don't know HTC desire but having the Hero myself I can't acknowledge that. My hero was new when I bought it, it's now 9 months old and four (!!!) software generations behind on Android with no official way to upgrade and half of the Apps in the Marketplace don't run on it anymore (SqueezeCommander works). Ok I am frustrated. I have an SB2 and 2 days ago purchased a SB Touch which mandates SBS 7.5. I have installed SBS 7.5, 7.5.1 + 7.6 and NONE of them will FIX the 'Cannot open D:\Itunes' issue. I have a large Itunes library completely made up of ALAC files and I cannot listen to any of them. This is such a huge bug for a product that supposedly had been delayed to make sure everthing worked out of the box. I have read the threads about this issue and have tried different SBS builds, different FAAD.EXEs (even one that a none-Logitech person modified to try and fix this issue) and none of them work. SBS has always been the Achilles Heel of this product line and when it works it works well but it has been plagued with bugs that somehow make it thru 'QA'. I was hoping this would be plug and play but I am ready to throw the Touch thru a window. Sorry for the rant. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Network test on Touch does not go above 2000kbps

[SlimDevices: Touch] Now Playing Screen Update Issues
I hooked up my Touch and all things seemed fine. I played a few tracks on my Rhapsody account and tried to switch tracks. Track switched fine, but the Now Playing screen did not. It remained the same on the previous artist and song. I factory reset the unit with the little button above the power supply and started again. I tested an internet radio station, went back to Rhapsody and started playing tracks again. The screen stays on the internet radio station. I am able to navigate around the unit, but the Now Playing screen will not update. Just before I typed this, I discovered the web-based remote control on MySqueezebox. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Remote Control Codes
paltomare;536725 Wrote: Still struggling with the remote codes, can't get them to work on my URC MX-950. Anyone with similar problems/solutions? I just tried a backward approach -- applying the ideas in 'this thread about Radio IR' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69634) to update the /usr/share/jive/jive/irMap_default.lua file on my Touch so that it would be hard-coded to accept JVC codes instead of Slim (e.g. map arrow_down to the JVC code 0xf78b instead of the Slim code 0x7689b04f). I didn't have any luck, but I have a pre-release hardware build, I think at least two revisions older than the retail units. So you might have better luck. The basic idea is to SSH into Touch, cd to /usr/share/jive/jive and edit the irMap_default.lua file, changing the hex values. Once you do that, you'll need to reboot Touch for the changes to take effect (simply restarting the 'jive' user interface app does not suffice). If you're comfortable with Linux and vi, I'd suggest you try it. Save a copy of irMap_default.lua in case you have to revert, and give it a shot. I'm pretty skeptical -- I think it may be the case that the IR circuits on Touch have either been programmed to ignore JVC codes (which would make sense -- the Touch UI should be more responsive if the IR circuit doesn't bother it with every silly IR signal that comes its way), or perhaps are even physically incapable of recognizing both Squeezebox and JVC codes -- see 'this comment from Felix' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=518771postcount=5) which isn't entirely clear about whether the IR limitation discussed in *that* thread is an intrinsic hardware issue or design choice. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ Free plugins: 'AllQuiet' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AllQuiet.html) 'Auto Dim/AutoDisplay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AutoDisplay.html) 'BlankSaver' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/BlankSaver.html) 'ContextMenu' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/ContextMenu.html) 'DenonSerial' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/DenonSerial.html) 'FuzzyTime' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/FuzzyTime.html) 'KidsPlay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KidsPlay.html) 'KitchenTimer' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KitchenTimer.html) 'PlayLog' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PlayLog.html) 'PowerCenter/BottleRocket' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PowerCenter.html) 'SaverSwitcher' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SaverSwitcher.html) 'SettingsManager' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SettingsManager.html) 'SleepFade' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SleepFade.html) 'StatusFirst' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/StatusFirst.html) 'SyncOptions' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SyncOptions.html) 'VolumeLock' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/VolumeLock.html) peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77401 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch tagging issues
Here are a couple of issues that have arisen in two days of playing with the Touch. I have my Touch connected to an external hard drive via USB. I'm also running SBS on my Mac with OS X Snow Leopard. I have identical libraries on the Mac and the USB drive on the Touch. Most of the files are in Apple Lossless (ALAC) format. The first issue has to do with accessing files via multiple entries in the artist list. The list shows names from both the Artist and Album Artist tag. For example, tracks on a classical album might have JS Bach in the Artist field and Yo-Yo Ma in the Album Artist field. The album shows up in the artist list twice, once for Bach and once for Yo-Yo. If I try to select a track from this album on the external USB drive from the Yo-Yo Ma entry on the artist list, I get a spinning icon and no music. However, if I select the same item from the Bach entry, the track plays. That's on the external USB drive. If I switch libraries so that the Touch accesses the files on my Mac over wi-fi, the problem goes away. I can access the track through Bach or Yo-Yo. The second issue is also related to tagging. The internal Touch server seems to throw a bunch of tags into the Artist list. Not just Album Artist--which I see on my Mac too--but the WRT tag on ALAC files too. I don't see those on the Mac. For instance, I've got a bunch of Velvet Underground albums. I ripped them using iTunes and they've all got Lou Reed in the WRT tag. When I run SBS on my Mac and click Lou Reed, I just see his solo albums. However, on the Touch with the external USB drive, clicking Lou Reed shows his solo records and all the albums with the Velvets. If I select one of these Velvet tracks, I get the spinning icon and no music as described above. However, I can access the music via the artist entry for Velvet Underground. It really would be nice if the two versions of the server were more consistent. Someone on the tagging forum said that there's no way to turn off display of Album Artist tags in Apple Lossless files. If that's the case, you should at least be able to use them to play music. -- MadCityGeoff MadCityGeoff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17429 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77519 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Misc. Touch questions
Forgive me if this is obvious, but is there any way to add an item to the Favorites list on the Touch? SBS on the host computer has various options, like the heart button for individual tracks and the New Favorite button in the Favorites list, but I don't see anything for the Touch internal server. I'd really like to add a URL for the KEXP live stream. (Aside: does anybody know if it's possible to play the KEXP uncompressed stream on the Touch?) Second: After playing back some tracks from the music library on an external USB hard drive, I've noticed that the Touch seems to use gapless playback so that one track starts right after another with no dead air. I don't recall this happening with earlier Squeezebox models. Is there a way to defeat this feature? [SlimDevices: Touch] Loss of clock - standalone, no internet
My SB Touch arrived at the office yesterday. It fired up nicely with a wired connection to my router and downloaded the current firmware. I inserted an 8GB SDHC card with music content. Worked very nicely. Then I removed the ethernet connection and ran it standalone with an analog connection to my office mini-system. I liked the nice digital clock in off mode. It was automatically set to the right time! I pulled the SD card to see what new cache files had been created. Then put the SD card back. I unplugged the Touch and brought it to my apartment, where I have no internet service (apart from possibly sponging from a neighbor's wireless network). Surprisingly, it took a little fooling around to get the Touch going. But there's no more digital clock. I tried selecting the various clock screen-savers for the stopped or off cases. No joy. Sometime a sample clock would come up, but not showing the correct time or date. Very curious.
