Always worth testing something like this on a subset of files with various characteristics to see if it mangles anything. I haven't done ALAC but have tried other conversion/retagging software. Worth getting it right before you spend time converting a large collection. Find some special case files in your collection for testing. Things to look out for after running test: - Is the audio fine? Does it play :) - Does 16/44 stay 16/44 and so on? - Converting it back do you end up with the same thing? Then the tags: - Are the format of the new tags correct. Some software tries to put the wrong type tags or the wrong version of the tags on music. More a problem on mp3s which end up with a bunch of weird version tags. - Look at all the tags on the existing file, and check if they are there on the new file. Artists, composers whatever is important to you. - Check special characters and see what happens to them. ë ê å those kind of things. Also test the software on a folder with special characters in the folder name. (if you have these) - Genres? Don't know the mac software for all this but in this process I find mp3tag on Windows very useful. -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77700 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

How on earth do your brick something that's already bricked? :-) One trick you might leverage: on bootup, Touch looks for a file named "squeezeos-boot.sh" on local media, and runs it if it exists. It's easy to imagine a script on an "autorestore" SD card like Code: #!/bin/sh # Caveat: untested!!! # replace any ".bak" files on the root ubifs for f in `find /mnt/storage -xdev -type f -name \*.bak`; do oldname=`echo $f | sed 's:.bak$::'` cat "$f" > "$oldname" done so what you'd do before making a change and rebooting is save the old, known good file as $orginalname.bak. When rebooting to test, keep your "autorestore" SD card *out*. If the device seems toasted, unplug it, pop the SD card in, and reboot to restore your .bak files. Add another script to wipe out bak files that you'd run if Touch booted ok, e.g. Code: #!/bin/sh # Caveat: untested!!! find /mnt/storage -xdev -type f -name \*.bak | xargs rm -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ Free plugins: 'AllQuiet' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AllQuiet.html) 'Auto Dim/AutoDisplay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AutoDisplay.html) 'BlankSaver' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/BlankSaver.html) 'ContextMenu' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/ContextMenu.html) 'DenonSerial' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/DenonSerial.html) 'FuzzyTime' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/FuzzyTime.html) 'KidsPlay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KidsPlay.html) 'KitchenTimer' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KitchenTimer.html) 'PlayLog' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PlayLog.html) 'PowerCenter/BottleRocket' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PowerCenter.html) 'SaverSwitcher' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SaverSwitcher.html) 'SettingsManager' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SettingsManager.html) 'SleepFade' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SleepFade.html) 'StatusFirst' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/StatusFirst.html) 'SyncOptions' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SyncOptions.html) 'VolumeLock' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/VolumeLock.html) peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77679 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Static IP
I almost agree, but would state that in an enterprise DHCP is better even with mostly static machines because of the extra management bells and whistles it provides. Yes, even servers get DHCP. At the home with consumer grade equipment and less need to manage pools of IP's and changing infrastructure do what works for the issue at hand. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77625 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

That is why DHCP was invented. > > -- > Pat Farrell > http://www.pfarrell.com/ Cannot disagree more with this. Static IP and DHCP each have their place and using either incorrectly is a bad idea. DHCP is good when you have devices that frequently enter and leave the network (desktops in a large corporate facility, laptops in a home.) Static IP is best when you have a device that stays on the network and is considered a part of the infrastructure. (Servers, Non-portable home PCs, network appliance devices.) In the case of digital music players static IPs will give you a more reliable and easier to troubleshoot environment without the extra complexity of DHCP handshaking. Rule of thumb that I have been following with good success is: 1- Always use a wired connection if possible (unless using a wireless only device like an SBC.) I reserve wireless for those situations where placing an ethernet jack close to the player is truly not possible. 2- Always use static IP addresses. It is extremely helpful in troubleshooting problems if you know exactly what the IP address of the player is. 3- Keep your router and your WAP(s) as separate devices. The best location for a WAP is rarely the best spot for a router (and vice versa) and few devices are going to excel at both tasks. The idea that "everything can be wireless", "everything DHCP", and all running through a combo "wireless router/game console" type device is going to yield good results is just not realistic. -- upstatemike 6x SliMP3, 1x SB1, 2x SB2, 10x SB3, 2x SBR, 4x SBC, 1x Boom upstatemike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6409 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77625 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My thoughts on the sound quality of the Touch
Just got my Touch. I have my Duet reciever and Touch synchronized and both connected to my Cambridge 840C DAC and can switch between them with the 840C remote. I can't hear any difference between them. Well, I didn't really expect to, since the 840C should be fairly jitter immune. Comparing the analog to digital will be a little trickier because of the different output levels and the fact that I have to get out of my chair to switch them on the pre-amp. -- Daverz Daverz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77649 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Apologies if I've missed this. Its very simple. The DAC has a voltage out, so no I/V stage is needed. The output goes to a series resistor after which is a cap to ground (low pass filter) then a series cap (SMD electrolytic, not sure of the model) and on to the RCA jack. The only thing that bothers me is that electrolytic cap, it doesn't really need to be there. The voltage out from the DAC chip is already ground referenced. Without a polarizing voltage the electrolytic cap won't be working correctly. Unless its a non polar electrolytic. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Universal remote controls SB3 but not Touch
Hi there Just to be clear. JVC DVD IR codes never worked on SB Radio and SB Touch. I think since about SB2/3 Slim Devices developed their own remote using IR codes which are assigned to Slim Devices and still supporting JVC DVD IR codes was 'free' on SB Classic, Transporter and SB Boom. However SB Radio and SB Touch use complete different hardware (with a dedicated micro controller handling IR and other stuff) so the 'old' JVC DVD IR codes were not implemented on these new devices anymore. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Universal remote controls SB3 but not Touch
Alll this may have been known about "for years" by certain ppl, but the JVC vs "proper" remote code thing has been a complete revelation to me (SB user since SB3). I'm not in any way an OFA remote fan-boy, but the fact that that their supoort dept has offered several times (to me anyway) to create a code for any device that they don't have in their database by sending in a learned-code or actual device remote control with an upgraded remote in return, suggests to me that they *are* willing to add new devices to their database. Then contrast this with SD/Logitech not documenting the proper codes in user-readable way e.g. manual or wiki, then silently pulling the JVC code support from newer devices, and then just happening to have their own universal remote offering - it all does tend to be rather irksome. :( -- mr-b mr-b's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10044 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77705 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Is it happening with FLAC files? A number of people have gotten around the problem by re-encoding using level -0 compression. If scanning is still going on when trying to play music all bets are off. In addition any animated visualizers can take up CPU time (spectrum analyzer, VU meters, picture viewer). When the server is running the processor has to handle both the server side and the player side so anything else going on can cause problems. If you have the drive shared try unsharing it, samba takes up some memory and cycles. > can't connect to mySB for MyApps or App Gallery whilst playing from > tinySC That one I don't have a solution for. It works fine for me. There are log files on the Touch which are frequently useful in debugging this sort of thing. You have to ssh into the Touch and then you can read the log files. At one point I connected a drive which had 2 million files, most of which were NOT audio files. There was about 10gigs of audio files in various locations on the disk. It handled it perfectly, found the audio files and ignored the rest. > Also, is large defined purely by number of files or does type of file > and length of track (i.e. size of file) also impact? I THINK its probably number of songs not size of file thats an issue. I have a disk which has about 100 songs on it but each "song" is 2 gig in size (they are raw concert recordings), this scans very quickly. Just a few thoughts on scanning in general, which you probably already know but here goes anyway. The scan stores data in the .Squeezebox dir on the disk. If there is an existing one from an external server or if there is a partial one from a scan which did not complete, its a good idea to delete it before starting the scan. I've seen the scanner do weird things when it couldn't correctly read the database. Turn off sharing, this leaves a little more memory which might help. Don't plug in an SD card. Don't do anything else while scanning, don't touch the screen, don't display pictures, nothing. The sequence I have found that gives the best chance of success is to disconnect the drive, unplug the power on the Touch. Plug the drive into another computer and delete .Squeezebox directory. Plug power into the Touch, let it sit for a couple minutes so all startup and initialization precesses have finished. Plug in the drive. When it comes up with the message about using the eject button go ahead and select the item for viewing the scan progress. After this don't touch the Touch until its done or you are really sure its hung. When done eject the drive, unplug drive, unplug power. Plug in power, wait a couple minutes, plug in drive, wait for (hopefully much shorter) rescan. At this point you should be good to go for playing music. They're all interpreted locally. And there are no old-style ".ir" files on Touch, so you can't tweak it on the player side with the old technique, either. I fear that the IR circuitry on Touch is either unable to recognise some non-Squeezebox IR codes, or has been programmed not to send non-Squeezebox codes to SqueezeOS & the Lua SqueezePlay user interface app running on Touch. Not sending those codes to SqueezePlay could be a smart move -- Touch should be more responsive if SqueezePlay didn't have to consider "other" IR codes. With GPL 2 you have to provide source to "any third party" if you have chosen to give a written offer for source code rather than distributing source with your binaries. With version 3 you are only required to offer it to those who possess the binaries, as you say, but they could get those binaries from other people. So if you only distribute binaries to one person, who then gives it to other people, who in turn give it to a thousand others, your offer to provide source applies to all of them. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My Touch doesn't seem to want to go into standby
Well the same thing has happened to me today. It has worked fine for 2 days but today when I got home I found we had suffered a brief power cut too and interestingly my SB touch was on and would not turn off by pressing the soft power button. After a few mins of fiddling I did a factory reset and everything was fine again for a I'd say 30mins max! I setup my personal settings again and by the time I had got to the end of it, it would no longer turn off again. Rather frustrated with it at the moment to be honest! -- Adam608 Adam608's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37583 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77680 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My Touch doesn't seem to want to go into standby
I ran a "factory reset" and everything is now working perfectly again. Took me around 5 mins to change the settings to how I want, but that's not that hard. It re-scanned my music collection in under 10mins, so I assume it was just doing a sanity check. The idea of being able to save settings on say a USB drive does sound like a good future option. -- Mr_Sukebe SB Touch, Meridian 568.2, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent system, audio-technica and Zanash cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77680 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

The Slim Devices / Squeezebox codes have been well documented for 'a long time' (http://svn.slimdevices.com/slim/VpªK}ËÝ1ëk/server/IR/Slim_Devices_Remote.ir?view=log). And the difference has been discussed on these forums 'for years' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=10580). Nothing has stopped OFA from adding the proper codes. If your One For All remote is JP1-compatible, see 'this thread' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63757) for more info and a Remote Master file for teaching your OFA the proper Squeezebox codes. I've programmed three cheap ($15 USD) OFA remotes with the proper Squeezebox codes (plus discrete power on/off) and they work fine. I think it's unfortunate that Logitech doesn't support JVC codes on Touch (and Radio), and also unfortunate that the Touch marketing has glossed over some SB3 features that Touch does not yet have (or never will have). But you should blame One For All for not giving you proper Squeezebox codes, not Logitech. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ Free plugins: 'AllQuiet' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AllQuiet.html) 'Auto Dim/AutoDisplay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/AutoDisplay.html) 'BlankSaver' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/BlankSaver.html) 'ContextMenu' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/ContextMenu.html) 'DenonSerial' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/DenonSerial.html) 'FuzzyTime' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/FuzzyTime.html) 'KidsPlay' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KidsPlay.html) 'KitchenTimer' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KitchenTimer.html) 'PlayLog' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PlayLog.html) 'PowerCenter/BottleRocket' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/PowerCenter.html) 'SaverSwitcher' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SaverSwitcher.html) 'SettingsManager' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SettingsManager.html) 'SleepFade' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SleepFade.html) 'StatusFirst' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/StatusFirst.html) 'SyncOptions' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/SyncOptions.html) 'VolumeLock' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/VolumeLock.html) peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77705 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Both the Duet, specifically the controller, and the Touch are based on SqueezeOS. The controller and Touch share a good bit of functionality - playback, ability to control any other player, change player settings, etc. I would surmise that this means there is a significant amount of common code between the two devices. Am I out in left field with this? Calling the Duet a "disaster" is extreme, but it definitly had some growing pains that had nothing to do with network configuration. The initial setup didn't handle a server that had security enabled well and there was a bug where the controller would lockup and reboot itself when navigating the music library. Fast foward to today and the Duet is a much better and stable product. In my mind, part of the success of the Touch is due the stability and maturity that the Duet has attained. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch is linux?
> if you want to tightly integrate your already existing code with > something released under GPL you will have to release the source for > your code also under GPL even though it was originally released under > some other license. That's only true if you want to distribute it to other people, because the GPL is a hack on the copyright laws. You don't normally have the right to make a copy of code and give it to someone else, but the GPL grants you that additional permission if you follow its restrictions. That's why the GPL is binding, because only accepting the license gives you the right to distribute GPL code. Internally, you can do anything you like with GPL products. You can link it directly into Windows if you want. The GPL only kicks in when you give your code to someone else. If your distributed product contains GPL code, then ALL the code with the product typically needs to be under the GPL as well. As long as you're not giving it to anyone else, the GPL doesn't apply. And if code you distribute doesn't contain any pieces of GPL code, then it also doesn't apply. You're free to put whatever license you want on your own code, as long as you're not shipping GPL code as part of it. And you only have to give your code to people that you actually give your binaries to, not any random Joe Schmoe off the street. If you can trust your customers not to distribute something further, you can still keep GPL code mostly secret. In other words, it's only "viral" if you're depending on GPL code to make some final product. Presumably, you're using the GPLed code because it would be too expensive to either write it yourself or pay for a commercial equivalent, and you pay for your use of that code by contributing your own to the GPL universe. If you don't want to do that, then don't distribute GPL code as part of your product, and you avoid the problem completely. It is, in my opinion, an extremely fair license, but if you think the price of distributing it is too high, you can use BSD code, or pay money for a commercial equivalent instead. -- Malor Malor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1961 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77579 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch UI Questions (fixes?)
I'll post my experience here just in case others are curious and don't want to experience my pain. :-) I'm sure there's an easier way. The files you want to modify are on the Touch itself, not the server. This is new for a SB3 hacker like myself. You need to enable SSH/Remote login from the UI. >From there, I've found the Touch applets are located in: /usr/share/jive/applets/ I've modified the /usr/share/jive/applets/NowPlaying/NowPlayingApplet.lua with this: local repeatModes = { mode0 = 'repeatOff', -- mode1 = 'repeatSong', -- mode2 = 'repeatPlaylist', } This changes the UI - the button won't respond to a touch graphically, but it still changes the repeat mode itself. What you need to do is comment out the push action (-- is a comment mark in Lua - egad, not ANOTHER language to learn! :-() self.repeatButton = Button(Icon('repeatMode'), function() --Framework: pushAction("repeat_toggle") return EVENT_CONSUME end ) This disables the button on the GUI, but keeps it working on the remote. 1. Small. Victory. :-) You also need to reboot between changes as far as I can tell. This will make hacking rather tedious - any way to re-launch an Applet without rebooting? I ended up hacking away on Squeezeplay since it's almost instant reboot on my PC. -Dan -- plympton plympton's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77679 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I think the license doesn't really matter to the owner of the code: Logitech can take their code and fork off a closed version. (Perhaps somewhat tricky due to some major 3rd party contributors like kdf's code that's in the core server... don't know if they require ownership assignment or not.) So from a corporate point of view, the choice between GPL and BSD really does favor GPL... it makes it in some sense "less free" in that -others- can't fork off a server and make it proprietary. (Stallman would argue that it makes it "more free" because it guarantees that derivatives would be free as well... and there is a point there.) Now, there may be some concern over the linking: "we would LOVE to use this library for our stuff, but we can't link it to our product". Ie, they would choose BSD over GPL not to protect their own code, but to allow linking to non-BSD/GPL libraries. (As I recall, it's okay to have GPL link to BSD, or have BSD link to proprietary... but GPL can't link to proprietary.) But, I'm not a lawyer and it all starts hurting my brain since 'intent' doesn't really matter in law at all the intent of even the original Jive license stuff wasn't to make it impossible to look at without tainting any trivial modifications... but that was the end result and hence a big push for the license changes. Hi there The usage of JVC DVD IR codes is an ancient thing going back to the very first device, SLIMP3 from Slim Devices, when there wasn't a dedicated IR remote and a Sony remote (being able to use JVC DVD IR codes) was bundled with the device. Up until SB Boom the old JVC DVD IR codes were supported but for the most recent two devices SB Radio and SB Touch the old IR codes have not been implemented anymore. Sorry. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any fix out there for missing album artwork?
on one of the missing album art songs, go into itunes, right click on track, go to properties, album art tab, and you'll likely see your itunes art there. Right click on the art, then immediately paste into the same box. Now the artwork is embedded in the tag. You can do this album at a time. When done, you'll have the album art embedded, then SbS can read it. As pointed out, itunes stores your art (when it finds it) in its own database, not in the file (or as a jpg in the file's subdirectory). So SbS doesn't see this. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77704 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] And Now The Touch?
notec;538465 Wrote: > After the disaster known as the Squeezebox Duet why would anyone get a > Touch? To go thru the same troubles all over again? First off your opening statement is completely false and untrue. The Duet was not a disaster. I have two of them and they have worked flawlessly for years. Is the Duet WiFi Network sensitive, in my opinion it is. Ninety-five precent of all issues with the Duet can be traced back to an improperly setup WiFi Network or one that has interference or is performing poorly. This is in no way Logitech's fault or the Duet's for that matter. It is directly related to the fact that the complaining owner will not take the time or do what is necessary to resolve his own WiFi issue which is at the root of the problem. Just because a laptop works OK on a WiFi network doesn't mean that network is healthy and properly setup. Downloading Email and Webpages on a bad WiFi Network will still work without showing major problems, attempting to stream real time audio is a completely different story. Second, as others have already pointed out, the Touch basically has nothing in common with the Duet. The Touch can more closely be related to the SB3 IE it is the SB4, the SB3s replacement. Yes it is a smart device where the SB3 was a dumb device, but the Touch in no way is trying to do what a Duet does or is it the replacement for the Duet. More importantly, I would be willing to bet that you don't own a Touch so you have no idea what you are talking about and more over are again making statements from no point in fact! You sir are nothing but a Troll since you obviously don't even own a Touch and have no way to make any comparisons much less objective factual statements. How about growing a brain and checking the Forum before you type. Are there any other posts comparing the Touch to the Duet? I will save you some time, there are not. The postings and feedback on the Touch are overwhelmingly positive! Is it perfect and will even do the dishes, it will not. Is it for everybody, again it is not. The point of the prior post can be illustrated by analogy to the reason O.J. Simpson is currently incarcerated. He claimed at his trial that he was attempting to retrieve his own property when he invaded a hotel room in Las Vegas and grabbed property by force and threat. However the court made clear that that was no defense to the crime of robbery. You can still be guilty of robbery even when you are taking your own property when it is in someone elses possession and you break and enter their room and breach the peace. So, by the same token in the matter of the recordings on the SACD, no one, not the orchestras, nor HDTracks, nor its studio, nor Playback Designs has a right to bypass the Sony encryption controls on the SACD chipset in order to retrieve these recordings. -- mortslim mortslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11039 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74688 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
