No.

Standard now playing screen with titles and artwork. No SSH or inbuilt
server enabled. The only app I've added is the weather screensaver for
standby mode.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and "burn in"

2010-04-21 Thread Gazjam

Getting mine today to replace an SB3, looking forward to improved
digital out into my Beresford Dac.

Most new bits of kit I've had needed some time from new to "bed in"
soundwise. Now the Touch has been out for a while, can any experienced
users comment on if this is the case with the Touch?

Ta.

[SlimDevices: Touch] CI Audio VDCSB

2010-04-21 Thread luny

Hello,

Currently I have an SB3 with a CI Audio VDC•SB.
The CI Audio VDC•SB supplies 5V DC @ 2.2 Amps.

Can I also use the VDC•SB for the Touch?
Can somebody confirm this will work?

Thx in advance

Thats why I said to plug it into a laptap rather than a router or
switch on the LAN. Most people are not running a software DHCP server
on their laptop so connecting direct to a laptop will make a connection
without servicing the DHCP request.

I tested it quite a bit and never had a problem with an external
server. The only time I ever had any problem with with the builtin
server and that wasn't very often.

Given the lack of problems that I've had I'm wondering what I'm doing
differently.

The only thing I can think of is that I don't have album art so I
normally run with the artless now playing screen.

Are others hearing the problems when artwork is changing?

This won't work unless you disable the DHCP server of your router
before you try to assign the static IP. You can turn it back on
afterward. See here:

I'm a frustrated and unsatisfied and jilted Logitech Squeezebox user...
yes.

The only successful org to ever tame the open source arena was/is
Mozilla.org. Logitech sold vaporware with the Duet. It's that simple.

Folks that claim they've never had issues with the duet either:

Always worth testing something like this on a subset of files with
various characteristics to see if it mangles anything. I haven't done
ALAC but have tried other conversion/retagging software. Worth getting
it right before you spend time converting a large collection.

Find some special case files in your collection for testing.

Things to look out for after running test:
- Is the audio fine? Does it play :)
- Does 16/44 stay 16/44 and so on?
- Converting it back do you end up with the same thing?

Then the tags:
- Are the format of the new tags correct. Some software tries to put
the wrong type tags or the wrong version of the tags on music. More a
problem on mp3s which end up with a bunch of weird version tags.
- Look at all the tags on the existing file, and check if they are
there on the new file. Artists, composers whatever is important to
you.
- Check special characters and see what happens to them. ë ê å those
kind of things. Also test the software on a folder with special
characters in the folder name. (if you have these)
- Genres?
Don't know the mac software for all this but in this process I find
mp3tag on Windows very useful.

If you create a patch file using "diff -uN oldfile newfile" we can
integrate it with the third party Patch Installer applet which can
re-install the patch automatically after each firmware upgrade.

You can look at a sample patch file for something completely
differently here:
http://erlandapplets.googlecode.com/svn/PatchInstaller/trunk/patches/dBVolume/dBVolume-1.0.patch

As you can see, the patch file needs to be relative to the /usr
directory.

If you create a patch file I can host it in my Google Code project or
as an alternative you can host it on your own server and create your
own repository file that contains your patches.

For a sample of a repository file, you can see the bottom "patches"
section of my repository:
http://erlandplugins.googlecode.com/svn/repository/trunk/latest.xml
Or as an alternative look at jstraw's repository file that only
contains patches, here:
http://www.smallproblem.com/touchmeter/jstraws_squeezebox_touch_enhancements.xml

Let me know if you want me to host it in my Google Code project and
I'll add it as soon as I've got the patch file from you.

One trick you might leverage: on bootup, Touch looks for a file named
"squeezeos-boot.sh" on local media, and runs it if it exists. It's easy
to imagine a script on an "autorestore" SD card like

Code:

  #!/bin/sh
  # Caveat: untested!!!
  # replace any ".bak" files on the root ubifs
  for f in `find /mnt/storage -xdev -type f -name \*.bak`; do
  oldname=`echo $f | sed 's:.bak$::'`
  cat "$f" > "$oldname"
  done

so what you'd do before making a change and rebooting is save the old,
known good file as $orginalname.bak. When rebooting to test, keep your
"autorestore" SD card *out*. If the device seems toasted, unplug it,
pop the SD card in, and reboot to restore your .bak files.

Add another script to wipe out bak files that you'd run if Touch booted
ok, e.g.

Code:

  #!/bin/sh
  # Caveat: untested!!!
find /mnt/storage -xdev -type f -name \*.bak | xargs rm

Maybe, maybe not. In the enterprise it's often better that servers and
devices have no-nonsense, fixed network setups so that they cannot under
any circumstances fail to receive addressing, DNS, and whatever other
configuration info that they may need to function 24/7. If new
addressing or other network configuration needs to be pushed out then
it will often be done via scripting, not DHCP.

At the home with consumer grade equipment and less need to manage pools

Cannot disagree more with this. Static IP and DHCP each have their
place and using either incorrectly is a bad idea. DHCP is good when you
have devices that frequently enter and leave the network (desktops in a
large corporate facility, laptops in a home.) Static IP is best when
you have a device that stays on the network and is considered a part
of the infrastructure. (Servers, Non-portable home PCs, network
appliance devices.)

In the case of digital music players static IPs will give you a more
reliable and easier to troubleshoot environment without the extra
complexity of DHCP handshaking. Rule of thumb that I have been
following with good success is:

1- Always use a wired connection if possible (unless using a wireless
only device like an SBC.) I reserve wireless for those situations where
placing an ethernet jack close to the player is truly not possible.

2- Always use static IP addresses. It is extremely helpful in
troubleshooting problems if you know exactly what the IP address of the
player is.

3- Keep your router and your WAP(s) as separate devices. The best
location for a WAP is rarely the best spot for a router (and vice
versa) and few devices are going to excel at both tasks.

The idea that "everything can be wireless", "everything DHCP", and all
running through a combo "wireless router/game console" type device is
going to yield good results is just not realistic.

I didn't really expect to, since the 840C should be fairly jitter

because of the different output levels and the fact that I have to get
out of my chair to switch them on the pre-amp.

Michael,

I've plowed through the code today, and made some good progress on the
volume slow issue. It seems it might be a dance between reliability
(not overshooting) and responsiveness. How can I go about making this
a parameter somewhere so that I don't need to reset this with every
FlashROM update?

Solution (for me). These changes make it almost EXACTLY the same as my
SB3's (~ 5 seconds from 0 -> 100 volume). This also speeds up the menu
responsiveness considerably:

in /usr/share/jive/jive/ui/IRMenuAcel.lua

Change:
INITIAL_ITEM_CHANGE_PERIOD

>From 350 to 200 (150 was just a tad-too jittery)

Change the acceleration algorithm to this:

> self.cyclesBeforeAccelerationStarts then
> self.itemChangePeriod = self.itemChangePeriod /
> 2
> elseif self.itemChangeCycles > 80 then
> scrollBy = 64

> scrollBy = 4
> elseif self.itemChangeCycles > 16 then
> scrollBy = 2
> elseif self.itemChangeCycles > 6 then

way to make THAT not happen!?

Its very simple. The DAC has a voltage out, so no I/V stage is needed.
The output goes to a series resistor after which is a cap to ground
(low pass filter) then a series cap (SMD electrolytic, not sure of the
model) and on to the RCA jack.

The only thing that bothers me is that electrolytic cap, it doesn't
really need to be there. The voltage out from the DAC chip is already
ground referenced. Without a polarizing voltage the electrolytic cap
won't be working correctly. Unless its a non polar electrolytic.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Universal remote controls SB3 but not Touch

2010-04-21 Thread fcm4711

Hi there

Just to be clear. JVC DVD IR codes never worked on SB Radio and SB
Touch. I think since about SB2/3 Slim Devices developed their own
remote using IR codes which are assigned to Slim Devices and still
supporting JVC DVD IR codes was 'free' on SB Classic, Transporter and
SB Boom.

However SB Radio and SB Touch use complete different hardware (with a
dedicated micro controller handling IR and other stuff) so the 'old'
JVC DVD IR codes were not implemented on these new devices anymore.

Maybe this wiki entry helps:

You could accomplish that by purchasing a SBR (the player part of the

select a player to control just like the controller.

This assumes that one day you'll be able to buy a seperate player one

I left the radio out only because I don't own one and can't comment on

What you say makes sense.

Your comment on "SqueezeOS is maturing" is what I was driving at: Duet
maturing = SqueezeOS maturing. Touch uses SqueezeOS, therefor Touch
benefits from Duet maturity.

Good, I'm not nuts :-). Seeing comments like "the duet has nothing to
do with the Touch" were making me wonder if I understood the
architecture correctly.

They do look challenged, don't they? The meters are using minimal CPU
resources so that they don't break something else. No idea what/if
there's a plan to further optimize graphics. I think Logitech is just

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Universal remote controls SB3 but not Touch

2010-04-21 Thread mr-b

Alll this may have been known about "for years" by certain ppl, but the
JVC vs "proper" remote code thing has been a complete revelation to me
(SB user since SB3).

I'm not in any way an OFA remote fan-boy, but the fact that that their
supoort dept has offered several times (to me anyway) to create a code
for any device that they don't have in their database by sending in a
learned-code or actual device remote control with an upgraded remote in
return, suggests to me that they *are* willing to add new devices to
their database.

Then contrast this with SD/Logitech not documenting the proper codes in
user-readable way e.g. manual or wiki, then silently pulling the JVC
code support from newer devices, and then just happening to have their
own universal remote offering - it all does tend to be rather irksome.
:(

Most of the drivers on the Touch are compiled into the kernel, not
loaded at runtime so they don't show up in the lsmod list.

Unfortunately the wlan0 interface not being seen does not guarantee
that the hardware is turned off. The hardware can still be on even if
the kernel has not setup an interface data structure for it. Its
probably not transmitting, but there is no guarantee.

Figuring out what is going on with the stuttering is ongoing. Is it
happening with FLAC files? A number of people have gotten around the
problem by re-encoding using level -0 compression. If scanning is still
going on when trying to play music all bets are off. In addition any
animated visualizers can take up CPU time (spectrum analyzer, VU
meters, picture viewer). When the server is running the processor has
to handle both the server side and the player side so anything else
going on can cause problems. If you have the drive shared try unsharing
it, samba takes up some memory and cycles.

> can't connect to mySB for MyApps or App Gallery whilst playing from
> tinySC

That one I don't have a solution for. It works fine for me. There are
log files on the Touch which are frequently useful in debugging this
sort of thing. You have to ssh into the Touch and then you can read the
log files. If there are errors making connections you might find
pertinent info in the logs.

> tinySC doesn't scrobble to last.fm
I'm pretty sure that has nothing to do with large libraries, etc. I
don't do scrobbling so I've never tried it.

I don't think so. At one point I connected a drive which had 2 million
files, most of which were NOT audio files. There was about 10gigs of
audio files in various locations on the disk. It handled it perfectly,
found the audio files and ignored the rest.

> Also, is large defined purely by number of files or does type of file
> and length of track (i.e. size of file) also impact?

I THINK its probably number of songs not size of file thats an issue. I
have a disk which has about 100 songs on it but each "song" is 2 gig in
size (they are raw concert recordings), this scans very quickly.

Just a few thoughts on scanning in general, which you probably already
know but here goes anyway. The scan stores data in the .Squeezebox dir
on the disk. If there is an existing one from an external server or if
there is a partial one from a scan which did not complete, its a good
idea to delete it before starting the scan. I've seen the scanner do
weird things when it couldn't correctly read the database. Turn off
sharing, this leaves a little more memory which might help. Don't plug
in an SD card. Don't do anything else while scanning, don't touch the
screen, don't display pictures, nothing.

The sequence I have found that gives the best chance of success is to
disconnect the drive, unplug the power on the Touch. Plug the drive
into another computer and delete .Squeezebox directory. Plug power into
the Touch, let it sit for a couple minutes so all startup and
initialization precesses have finished. Plug in the drive. When it
comes up with the message about using the eject button go ahead and
select the item for viewing the scan progress. After this don't touch
the Touch until its done or you are really sure its hung. When done
eject the drive, unplug drive, unplug power. Plug in power, wait a
couple minutes, plug in drive, wait for (hopefully much shorter)
rescan. At this point you should be good to go for playing music.

Not really.

And you left out the Radio, which also uses much of the same code.

'SqueezeOS' is maturing.

(Of course, it helps that the operating model of the Radio and Touch
are also simpler: there isn't a headless device they need to talk to...
there is no doubt some confusion when setting up SBR's whether you're
talking to the SBC or the SBR... The Touch and Radio don't have that
layer of confusion to them.)

Definitely you can't customize on the server -- Touch does not send any
raw IR codes to the server AFAICT. They're all interpreted locally. And
there are no old-style ".ir" files on Touch, so you can't tweak it on
the player side with the old technique, either.

Whether it can be done at all is a good question for Felix. I tried
editing the
SqueezePlay IR config on Touch (http:/
name="Webslimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=536748&postcount=11) to make it
recognize JVC DVD codes
(the SqueezePlay Lua hex representations of Squeezebox codes is the
same as the old Perl Squeezebox Server hex representation, so I hoped I
could just drop in the JVC hex codes), but had no luck. I fear that the
IR circuitry on Touch is either unable to recognise some non-Squeezebox
IR codes, or has been programmed not to send non-Squeezebox codes to
SqueezeOS & the Lua SqueezePlay user interface app running on Touch.
Not sending those codes to SqueezePlay could be a smart move -- Touch
should be more responsive if SqueezePlay didn't have to consider
"other" IR codes. But I don't know any way to make Touch recognise
non-Squeezebox IR codes.

With GPL 2 you have to provide source to "any third party" if you have
chosen to give a written offer for source code rather than distributing
source with your binaries. With version 3 you are only required to offer
it to those who possess the binaries, as you say, but they could get
those binaries from other people.

So if you only distribute binaries to one person, who then gives it to
other people, who in turn give it to a thousand others, your offer to
provide source applies to all of them.

For lengthy explanations of this issue and others, see this SFLC guide:

Well the same thing has happened to me today. It has worked fine for 2
days but today when I got home I found we had suffered a brief power
cut too and interestingly my SB touch was on and would not turn off by
pressing the soft power button.

After a few mins of fiddling I did a factory reset and everything was
fine again for a I'd say 30mins max! I setup my personal settings
again and by the time I had got to the end of it, it would no longer
turn off again.

Rather frustrated with it at the moment to be honest!

I ran a "factory reset" and everything is now working perfectly again.
Took me around 5 mins to change the settings to how I want, but that's
not that hard. It re-scanned my music collection in under 10mins, so I
assume it was just doing a sanity check.
The idea of being able to save settings on say a USB drive does sound
like a good future option.

One For All has had *years* to get this right. The Slim Devices /
Squeezebox codes have been well documented for 'a long time'
And the difference has been discussed on these forums 'for years'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=10580). Nothing has
stopped OFA from adding the proper codes.

If your One For All remote is JP1-compatible, see 'this thread'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63757) for more info
and a Remote Master file for teaching your OFA the proper Squeezebox
codes. I've programmed three cheap ($15 USD) OFA remotes with the
proper Squeezebox codes (plus discrete power on/off) and they work
fine.

I think it's unfortunate that Logitech doesn't support JVC codes on
Touch (and Radio), and also unfortunate that the Touch marketing has
glossed over some SB3 features that Touch does not yet have (or never
will have). But you should blame One For All for not giving you proper
Squeezebox codes, not Logitech.

Perhaps somebody could clear this up. Both the Duet, specifically the
controller, and the Touch are based on SqueezeOS. The controller and
Touch share a good bit of functionality - playback, ability to control
any other player, change player settings, etc. I would surmise that
this means there is a significant amount of common code between the two
devices. Am I out in left field with this?

Calling the Duet a "disaster" is extreme, but it definitly had some
growing pains that had nothing to do with network configuration. The
initial setup didn't handle a server that had security enabled well and
there was a bug where the controller would lockup and reboot itself when
navigating the music library.

Fast foward to today and the Duet is a much better and stable product.
In my mind, part of the success of the Touch is due the stability and
maturity that the Duet has attained. Am I out in left field again?

That analogy is just soo wrong.

The intellectual copyright holder has a priori rights and cannot be
denied complete freedom of access to their own copyright material,
regardless of the mechanical storage medium it may happen to reside on

My goal is to hear music that is as close as possible to a live
unamplified performance (in my room, keeping my audio spending in
balance with other family priorities). When I listen, it's "does this
sound real, is it music, do I keep putting my book down because the
music is so extremely good?".

Overall, I've been very happy with the music this system makes in my
home. It's obvious that the weak spot in my system has been on the
front end, and I have never taken the time to audition a really first
rate CD player or DAC (although the Audiosector DAC is well-regarded, I
think). Certainly, I can listen to well-recorded CDs and be very, very
happy (e.g., I don't feel that there has been some defined problem to
fix).

So, last night listening to the Touch (line output straight into the
preamp, Vanska playing Beethoven's 4th Symphony on BIS, streamed from
my iMac G4) I found the music to be a bit more spare, more clear (veils
removed!!), more bass (good solid, defined bass), highs extended and
without harshness, much more present (not as present as vinyl, but a
big step in that direction), and overall much more enjoyable.

Next, I'll listen to a lot more music. I'll post again here if my
impressions change.

The Touch appears to be by far the best $300 I've ever spent on my
system.

Really, where does it say that ?

As far as I know you are only obligated to give the source to anyone
that you have given/sold the binaries to. Of course, you can't forbid
them to redistribute it to someone else but if you haven't got the
binaries no one is forced to give you the source even if you request
it, at least that's how I've understood it.

Thanks, Mitch. It does seem like the Touch has some difficulties with

like a fairly major issue.

> some other license.

That's only true if you want to distribute it to other people, because
the GPL is a hack on the copyright laws. You don't normally have the
right to make a copy of code and give it to someone else, but the GPL
grants you that additional permission if you follow its restrictions.
That's why the GPL is binding, because only accepting the license gives
you the right to distribute GPL code.

Internally, you can do anything you like with GPL products. You can
link it directly into Windows if you want. The GPL only kicks in when
you give your code to someone else. If your distributed product
contains GPL code, then ALL the code with the product typically needs
to be under the GPL as well. As long as you're not giving it to anyone
else, the GPL doesn't apply. And if code you distribute doesn't contain
any pieces of GPL code, then it also doesn't apply. You're free to put
whatever license you want on your own code, as long as you're not
shipping GPL code as part of it. And you only have to give your code
to people that you actually give your binaries to, not any random Joe
Schmoe off the street. If you can trust your customers not to
distribute something further, you can still keep GPL code mostly
secret.

In other words, it's only "viral" if you're depending on GPL code to
make some final product. Presumably, you're using the GPLed code
because it would be too expensive to either write it yourself or pay
for a commercial equivalent, and you pay for your use of that code by
contributing your own to the GPL universe. If you don't want to do
that, then don't distribute GPL code as part of your product, and you
avoid the problem completely.

It is, in my opinion, an extremely fair license, but if you think the
price of distributing it is too high, you can use BSD code, or pay
money for a commercial equivalent instead.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Universal remote controls SB3 but not Touch

2010-04-21 Thread mr-b

Ah, so I'm guessing you mean that the SB3 (etc.) remote only ever used a
non-JVC code?

This is a real pain since now at least one quite popular brand of
universal remotes that used to work with SB kit now no longer does so.

What's most frustrating is that I don't think anyone ever knew (from
the forum posts I've seen anyway) that the "proper" codes weren't the
JVC DVD ones. Otherwise it would have been possible to get the
manufacturer to change the codes and incorporate them in all new
remotes. :-(

I agree. I bought my Duet more than a year ago, that day I got home at
about 10 PM and by 2 AM the thing wasn't working. I decided that this
was maybe due to the fact that I had a couple of beers while
configuring the thing so I gave it a try the next morning. By noon
nothing is working and I'm cursing and willing to return the thing
because I though the WiFi network couldn't be the cause. After some
troubleshooting on the network side I noticed that the problem was that
my old Linksys Travel Router crashed when the Duet tried to connect.
Linksys provided no help and no firmware updates for this box so I
changed to an Apple Airport Express (similar form and factor than the
Linksys) and voila! Since this is in my living room me, my family and
our guests have enjoyed the system a LOT! Can't wait to get a Touch to
replace my Linux+SqueezePlay+DAC arrangement in my listening room.

With local pushes, it goes from the screen, and Lua interprets it
locally, sending the result to the server for processing.

With the remote, the hardware takes in the IR code, sends it to the
server for processing, which sends the result back to the Touch for
display updates? Essentially a 2nd wireless hop back to the touch
before the display gets updated?

OK, I'll take it to the SqueezeOS area now.. :-)

Exactly, You have to take your time to learn something sometimes, for
example how does my network really work is that so hard to do ?
Re networking some users also cheap out on very bad "broadband" deals
with very low speeds and a lot of throttling etc.
So the ISP is crap but they still blame the Squeezebox when they get no
internet radio.
If you want to use internet get a good ISP.

Sadly he is good Troll, he provoked 9 post's from a vague negative and
clueless post ? But it has o be met with some kind of response, hence
sometimes you have to go with it

My duet has also worked for 2 years now initial setup was finicky for
me, it have had it's period but always been usable and up for it when
it's time for some music. It has some design limitations, but it's made
to price piont so it's ok.
But now I'm back to be impressed by my Touch :)

"And Now the Touch "
Read the post carefully these are not you average users fiddling with
it.
Some like to plays 24/96 hirez with it.
Some like to use the limited "Tiny" server with an 5 track
collections ?
Or connect networks shares and whatnot's ?
Demanding users with vocal opinions that are not Easy to please.

So it's not many average Joe's pleading for help with basic things
that's not fits in with 95% category of flawed local network or

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch UI Questions (fixes?)

2010-04-21 Thread plympton

I'll post my experience here just in case others are curious and don't
want to experience my pain. :-) I'm sure there's an easier way.

The files you want to modify are on the Touch itself, not the server.
This is new for a SB3 hacker like myself. You need to enable
SSH/Remote login from the UI.

>From there, I've found the Touch applets are located in:
/usr/share/jive/applets/

I've modified the
/usr/share/jive/applets/NowPlaying/NowPlayingApplet.lua with this:

local repeatModes = {
mode0 = 'repeatOff',
-- mode1 = 'repeatSong',
-- mode2 = 'repeatPlaylist',
}

This changes the UI - the button won't respond to a touch graphically,
but it still changes the repeat mode itself.

What you need to do is comment out the push action (-- is a comment
mark in Lua - egad, not ANOTHER language to learn! :-()

self.repeatButton = Button(Icon('repeatMode'),
function()
--Framework: pushAction("repeat_toggle")
return EVENT_CONSUME
end
)

This disables the button on the GUI, but keeps it working on the
remote. 1. Small. Victory. :-)

You also need to reboot between changes as far as I can tell. This
will make hacking rather tedious - any way to re-launch an Applet
without rebooting? I ended up hacking away on Squeezeplay since it's
almost instant reboot on my PC.

No clue: for the owner, I think GPL is better (it means no one can take
the code, make it work on their own hardware and run off, giving nothing
in return). My guess is actually that they're being more generous for
whatever reason.

>
> I'm not really against GPL but I can understand why some

> license.

I think the license doesn't really matter to the owner of the code:
Logitech can take their code and fork off a closed version. (Perhaps
somewhat tricky due to some major 3rd party contributors like kdf's
code that's in the core server... don't know if they require ownership
assignment or not.)

So from a corporate point of view, the choice between GPL and BSD
really does favor GPL... it makes it in some sense "less free" in that
-others- can't fork off a server and make it proprietary. (Stallman
would argue that it makes it "more free" because it guarantees that
derivatives would be free as well... and there is a point there.)

Now, there may be some concern over the linking: "we would LOVE to use
this library for our stuff, but we can't link it to our product". Ie,
they would choose BSD over GPL not to protect their own code, but to
allow linking to non-BSD/GPL libraries. (As I recall, it's okay to
have GPL link to BSD, or have BSD link to proprietary... but GPL can't
link to proprietary.)

But, I'm not a lawyer and it all starts hurting my brain since 'intent'
doesn't really matter in law at all the intent of even the original
Jive license stuff wasn't to make it impossible to look at without
tainting any trivial modifications... but that was the end result and
hence a big push for the license changes.

("Oh, you looked at our screensaver to write your own? Well now you
can't distribute your own!")

Hi there

The usage of JVC DVD IR codes is an ancient thing going back to the
very first device, SLIMP3 from Slim Devices, when there wasn't a
dedicated IR remote and a Sony remote (being able to use JVC DVD IR
codes) was bundled with the device.

Up until SB Boom the old JVC DVD IR codes were supported but for the
most recent two devices SB Radio and SB Touch the old IR codes have not
been implemented anymore. Sorry.

I'm getting about the same - when I saw 7 seconds, I was like, "No way,
can't be that long", but yep. Timed it on the ol' iPhone - 7 seconds
from 100% - 50%, but 8.2 to go from 50% to 0%. Acceleration really
kicks in.

Subjectively, it's about 1/2 the rate of the SB3's I have.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any fix out there for missing album artwork?

2010-04-21 Thread garym

on one of the missing album art songs, go into itunes, right click on
track, go to properties, album art tab, and you'll likely see your
itunes art there. Right click on the art, then immediately paste into
the same box. Now the artwork is embedded in the tag. You can do this
album at a time. When done, you'll have the album art embedded, then
SbS can read it. As pointed out, itunes stores your art (when it finds
it) in its own database, not in the file (or as a jpg in the file's
subdirectory). So SbS doesn't see this.

Can we have some more information so we can narrow this down and try to
help you? Are you talking about the Touch when using SBS or TinySC? What
version of SBS and what firmware is the Touch running? Are you looking
at your iTunes library on the PC and actually in iTunes when you say
there is 60% more?

It is completely possible that you asked iTunes to go out and find
missing artwork for iTunes. This does not mean that iTunes imbedded the
artwork into the music files. Depending on how your library that SBS
looks at is setup, a copy of the cover.jpg file might need to be moved
into the actual directory where that album is.

Personally, I can't stand iTunes. It corrupts, picks the wrong cover
art or band, and is designed so anybody can use it which ends up making
it to weak or to come to the wrong decision. The best solution is to use
a tagging/cover art program to correctly tag and find cover art.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Universal remote controls SB3 but not Touch

2010-04-21 Thread mr-b

Hi

I'm trying to get my universal remote (One For All URC 7556) to work
with the Touch. It works fine with my SB3 (using the JVC DVD code 0623)
but it seems to do absolutely nothing with the Touch.

I found this rather odd since the SB3 and Touch remotes appear to be
largely interchangeable i.e. the SB3 remote controls the Touch fine and
vice versa (sans a few keys).

WTF?

It sounded strange to me because I thought Perl was just a scripting

2010-04-21 Thread iPhone

notec;538465 Wrote:
> After the disaster known as the Squeezebox Duet why would anyone get a
> Touch? To go thru the same troubles all over again?

First off your opening statement is completely false and untrue. The
Duet was not a disaster. I have two of them and they have worked
flawlessly for years. Is the Duet WiFi Network sensitive, in my opinion
it is. Ninety-five precent of all issues with the Duet can be traced
back to an improperly setup WiFi Network or one that has interference
or is performing poorly. This is in no way Logitech's fault or the
Duet's for that matter. It is directly related to the fact that the
complaining owner will not take the time or do what is necessary to
resolve his own WiFi issue which is at the root of the problem. Just
because a laptop works OK on a WiFi network doesn't mean that network
is healthy and properly setup. Downloading Email and Webpages on a bad
WiFi Network will still work without showing major problems, attempting
to stream real time audio is a completely different story.

Second, as others have already pointed out, the Touch basically has
nothing in common with the Duet. The Touch can more closely be related
to the SB3 IE it is the SB4, the SB3s replacement. Yes it is a smart
device where the SB3 was a dumb device, but the Touch in no way is
trying to do what a Duet does or is it the replacement for the Duet.

More importantly, I would be willing to bet that you don't own a Touch
so you have no idea what you are talking about and more over are again
making statements from no point in fact!

You sir are nothing but a Troll since you obviously don't even own a
Touch and have no way to make any comparisons much less objective
factual statements. How about growing a brain and checking the Forum
before you type. Are there any other posts comparing the Touch to the
Duet? I will save you some time, there are not. The postings and
feedback on the Touch are overwhelmingly positive! Is it perfect and
will even do the dishes, it will not. Is it for everybody, again it is
not. Is it a great addition to the Squeezebox line of products? It is
and again the postings and feedback point this out!

Touch is good release and a very good product ? it has some issues
ofcourse.
But works right out of the box for most users.
This is a much better than the initial Duet debacle.

Kudos to Logitech for getting closer the goal regarding smooth releases

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/192

2010-04-21 Thread mortslim

The point of the prior post can be illustrated by analogy to the reason
O.J. Simpson is currently incarcerated. He claimed at his trial that
he was attempting to retrieve his own property when he invaded a hotel
room in Las Vegas and grabbed property by force and threat. However
the court made clear that that was no defense to the crime of robbery.
You can still be guilty of robbery even when you are taking your own
property when it is in someone else’s possession and you break and
enter their room and breach the peace.

So, by the same token in the matter of the recordings on the SACD, no
one, not the orchestras, nor HDTracks, nor its studio, nor Playback
Designs has a right to bypass the Sony encryption controls on the SACD
chipset in order to retrieve these recordings.

Squeezeboxserver is written in perl ?

Squeezeplay is written in Lua (the software running the controller).

ideally you want to look into both to track issues.

First, I have a Duet and it works fine. The initial software/firmware
for the controller was a bit flaky but was fixed in subsequent
versions. I haven't had any significant issues for quite some time.

Second, the Touch's release was intentionally delayed to minimize those
types of issues. I've had mine running in my system for 12 days now.

Of course, no product ever made by any company is going to work
perfectly for everyone. It is simply impossible for a computer products
company to anticipate and test for every single possible variable in
computers, operating systems & software installation, wireless routers
and so on.

If you look back through the forum archives, you'll find people who had
difficulty with the earliest Squeezebox models. Those who wish to
pretend there were no issues with the SB Classic and prior models are
simply choosing to remain willfully ignorant.

I think it's related. I had the same issue in my thread
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77523 about a missing
clock. After a power interruption, it seems that the Touch needs to
connect to the internet to get the clock going again. Otherwise in
