[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.1.5 released

2011-01-18 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah

Hi lists,

A quick bug fix release to celebrate the new Year. Please welcome
Pootle 2.1.5!
http://sourceforge.net/projects/translate/files/Pootle/2.1.5/

Pootle is a web based system for translation and translation management.

This release fixes a couple of regressions introduced in the previous
2.1.4 release. Including a build mistake where the files in the 2.1.4
tarball had very restrictive permissions.

Apart from that, version 2.1.5 has a handful of fixes. Here are the
highlights:
  - Fix regression causing update from templates to fail for GNU Style
projects with subdirectories.
  - Fix regression in handling obsolete units while committing to
version control (reported by Mozilla).
  - Clean stale file locks left in cases of external kills which
running expensive commands.
  - Fix security bug where project names would leak to users without
view access on the server via news summary on front page or profile
edit form.
  - Fix a bug that prevented Project level permissions from overriding
very restrictive server wide permissions.

As always Pootle will benefit from fixes and performance improvements
in the latest versions of Translate Toolkit.

 Hi,

I'm confused how the matching works.
It seems like it tries to match language code at the end of the file
name. Which is fine. But imagine that you have mixture of 2 leter
codes (like en, es, ru, pl - ISO 639) and 5 leter codes like (en_US,
 pl_PL, es_ES, ca_ES - ISO 639_ISO 3166). If I'll assign languages
like pl, pl_PL to the same project it matches all files that ends by
pl_PL to both of languages and files are reported twice. This is
wrong. If I'll assign languages like es, ca_ES all files that ends to
the es or ES will be matched. This is wrong because you are matching
Catalan to Spain. I suppose that it is caused by case insensitivity
of matching language codes. Language code is always lowercase and
 country code is always uppercase.

This is how the 2.1.3 version works. I suppose that 2.1.4 works same
 way.

I don't see Non-gnu project tree style as suitable workaround for my
 projects.

Could you be more strict about this or make case sensitivity as
 optional parameter (at least)?

 Thanks for help in advance

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.1.4 released

2010-12-16 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah

Hola lists,

We thought we'd wrap up the year with one more bug fix release, Please
welcome Pootle 2.1.4
http://sourceforge.net/projects/translate/files/Pootle/2.1.4/

Pootle is a web based system for translation and translation management.

This release fixes a nasty bug where quality checks failed to update on
file uploads. the upgrade screen will flash on first visit after
upgrade for a minute or two to correct this problem (might take longer
if you used the quality checks feature extensively).

Apart from that, version 2.1.4 has a handful of fixes. Here are the
highlights:
  - Once and for all Qt ts plurals should now work correctly.
  - Fixed a bug where obsolete units could not be updated when
uploading a new version of the file.
  - Fixed a bug that affected some GNU/Linux systems causing server
errors when using Turkish Locale.
  - Fixed a bug in GNU style projects with a prefix where pt_BR would
be detected as Breton instead of Brazilian Portuguese

As always Pootle will benefit from fixes and performance improvements
in the latest versions of Translate Toolkit.

the language they're currently on. So the current behavior, IMHO,
is probably the more correct behavior.

 I'm a developer/admin too. So yes, I agree, I don't expect the same
complexity of the interface than a simple translator user.

But, this link targets on the same page as the current one

not saying it shouldn't change or anything, but the idea is that it is
breadcrumbs following the URL structure, if you click on a subdirectory
or file link they'll be added to the breadcrumb too, and then the link
with the project name becomes useful and doesn't link to the same page
anymore.

but yes I often feel the need to jump directly to the project page.
that I suspect is only of use to Project admins or developers not to
translators though.

Using the breadcrumbs model a global project would be leftmost on the
crumbs list. In pootle it is just missing. The crumbs are also not
correct if one is a un-registered visitor who navigated in through
 the home page: home-project-language-...

currently the breadcrumbs reflect Pootle's structure, not the User's
path. maybe we can switch to a system that reflects the steps users
took (if we can avoid making it as buggy as docuwiki's breadcrumbs).

another option would be to add a drop down list next to the language
link to make it easy to jump to another language for the same project.
(we can do the same for projects, subdirs and files too)

Currently one has to go all the way out to the server home page or
user profile pages then navigate back through the project links just
to change language. We have learned to cope, but its still annoying.
I got around it by making the pootle logo link to the project page.
Not a good case for scaling up.

I understand, I'm constantly annoyed by it too, but the assumption that
Language is the primary object goes deeper than just navigation. it is
in permissions and the url structure too.

I still think organizing translation workflow on the basis of language
teams makes more sense for most users though.

Pootle does automatic scanning when you first create the project, so
the correct steps are to setup filesystem first, then create the
project.

your options are to use the manage.py command
update_translation_projects as described in
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/commands

or you can add the languages manually to the project from the project
admin tab.

 Hello,

2 different issues but maybe same reason. I'm still getting:

- Can't find the ISO codes package. Pootle uses ISO codes to
 translate language names.

the test for iso codes involves translating a language name to a
specific language (french if I remember correctly). maybe something in
your ubuntu setup is supressing locale files for languages other than
your defaults?

- No text indexing engine found. Searching is faster if an indexing
engine like Xapian or Lucene is installed.

Even though I installed* iso-codes* package (using Ubuntu) and for
 search engine:
 python-xapian
 xapian-tools
 libclucene0ldbl
 libclucene-dev

python-xapian and xapian-tools should be sufficient if their version is
at least 1.0.13

Pootle relies on the command xapian-check to test version. is it in the
path under the virtualenv?

check the version yourself

xapian-check --version

Now we'd like to add the translation of other languages, but we
understood now the importance of template language for it.
We deleted template language some weeks ago :-)))

Any suggestion on how to re-enable this nice template language
feature? it seems is not enought to create a directory named template
 under the project languages folder.

it seems you deleted the templates language from the server, so first
you need to go to admin - languages and create it again.

once you created it should scan the filesystem and detect files that
should belong to templates. if it fails to find them you might have to
add the language manually to the GTD-Free project from the admin tab on
http://traduzioni.weappon.com/projects/GTD-Free/

btw in the absence of the templates language pootle assumes the
project's source language plays the same role as templates. in your
case that would be english. so maybe you don't need to change anything.

the umask used by the server process is applied, that's usually apache
and distros set up apache to have restrictive umask.

you might be able to modify the umask for the apache process by adding
a line like this in the relevant startup file

umask 022

under fedora and similar distros you should add the line to
/etc/sysconfig/httpd

under debian and ubuntu it would be
/etc/apache2/envvars

you'll need to restart apache after the change (full restart not
reload).

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.1.2 released

2010-10-29 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah
Hola lists,

It's been two months since the last bugfix release of Pootle,
time to roll another one. Presenting Pootle 2.1.2 download from
from http://sourceforge.net/projects/translate/files/Pootle/2.1.2/

Pootle is a web based system for translation and translation
management.

This release includes an important security fix to a cross site
scripting vulnerability in the translate page. All users are encouraged
to upgrade immediately.

Release also includes many improvements to the support of monolingual
translation formats (like subtitles files and Java properties) and to
GNU style projects.

We also bring you translations for five new language (Zulu, Greek,
Danish, Acoli and Fulah) and six more translations are now 100%
complete (Uighur, Chinese (China), Catalan, Asturian, Akan and Ganda).

Apart from that 2.1.2 many bug fixes. Here are the highlights:
  * Fixed a PostgreSQL incompatibility bug.
  * Fixed a regression where plural units in Qt ts where not parsed
correctly.
  * A new manage.py command update_translation_projects allows for
detecting new languages added to projects on the file system.
  * More flexible options to all manage.py commands allowing users to
limit commands to a set of projects and languages.
  * Pootle now supports GNU Style projects where filenames have a
prefix preceding language codes.
  * Pootle will ignore case differences when matching filenames to
language codes.
  * Improvements to fuzzy matching when updating monolingual projects
from templates.
  * Pootle will no longer modify templates files, translations to these
files will be stored in database only to avoid propagating these
translations on update from templates.
  * Users with administer permissions on a language or project now have
all the other rights implied automatically for that language or
project.
  * Users with only suggest right will be able to upload files using
the suggest only merge method.
  * URLs in developer comments are now displayed as links.
  * Fixed bug that caused unnecessary diffs to PO files tracked in
version control.
  * Local terminology no longer blocks suggestions from the server-wide
terminology project.
  * Pootle is now less fascistic about what language codes should look
like, but users should try to stick to GNU locale names when
possible.
  * Removed confusing initialize checkbox from Project admin page. No
one knew what it was for, those who do can uncomment a single line
of code to bring it back.

Thats all for now, Pootle 2.1.1 depends on at least version 1.8.0 of
Translate Toolkit, and as always will benefit from fixes in any later
versions. so always use the latest.

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.1.1 released

2010-09-03 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah
Yo lists,

With the coming of spring we thought it's a good time to make the first
bug fix release of the exciting new Pootle. We bring you Pootle 2.1.1
get it while it is blooming from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/translate/files/Pootle/2.1.1/

Pootle is a web based system for translation and translation
management. (and it rocks if I may say so myself).

This release finally brings the ability to migrate data between
different database engines. This means all of you stuck with the
default sqlite3 can now move to a database engine that scales better
like MySQL or PostGreSQL.

Note that database migration depends on Django 1.2 or later.

As an added bonus we added database migration to the 2.0 branch and
quietly slipped in the last bug fix release for that series
http://sourceforge.net/projects/translate/files/Pootle/2.0.6/ we made
this bonus release so users still on the 2.0 branch using sqlite can
migrate databases before they upgrade to 2.1 since the upgrade process
is slow and the database size under 2.1 is considerably larger.

for instructions and more details check
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/database_migration

We noticed some users running Pootle under apache fail to use memcached
for caching and stick to the default local memory cache backend. This
causes buggy behavior as the default is not compatible with
multiprocess servers. so for 2.1.1 we changed the default to a database
cache backend. We still recommend using memcached but if for any reason
you can't please update your localsettings.py.

Users upgrading from 2.1.0 will see the upgrade screen appear
for a few seconds while Pootle prepares the database for the new cache
backend.

for more information check
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/cache

Apart from these two major changes 2.1.1 includes four new
translations (Slovenian, Songhai, Tamil and Faroese) and many fixes and
performance improvements. Here are the highlights:
 * Translation progress tables now show icons to indicate
   ability to change table sorting.
 * Apertium machine translation improved their Javascript APIs with the
help of our Julen, Pootle has been updated to use these new apis
which make apertium a much more attractive option (specially for
   translation between European languages).
 * Pootle no longer attempts to save translations to disk when there
are no new translations. Speeds up downloads.
 * Pootle now keeps a cached copy of exported ZIP archives and XLIFF
   files to improve performance.
 * Correct From header for emails sent by contact form.
 * Fixed a bug where Pootle kept files open even when not needed.

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.1.0 Release Candidate

2010-08-09 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah
Hi list,

Today the Pootle team announces the release candidate for the
upcoming Pootle 2.1.0 another long release cycle is getting very close
to an end.

Grab it while it is hot from
http://translate.sourceforge.net/snapshots/Pootle-2.1.0-rc1/

Not much has changed since Beta 2, we've closed some bugs, worked on
performance issues exposed by migrating our pootle server
(http://pootle.locamotion.org) to the new codebase. more visibly Julen
continued to improve the design and UI with niceties like highlighting
selected rows in admin pages.

The import_old_prefs script used to migrate ancient Pootle installs
from the 1.2 and 1.1 days has been updated to the new data model
and tested with a massive install.

And finally we are very excited to have 2.1 already fully translated
into 17 languages (Vietnamese, Turkish, Swedish, Spanish, Sardinian,
Russian, Northern Sotho, Japanese, Icelandic, Georgian, Galician,
English (United Kingdom), Belarusian, Basque, Arabic, Afrikaans,
Ukrainian) with 9 more languages are almost complete (Polish,
Lithuanian, Finnish, Italian, Akan, French, Ganda, Dutch, Portuguese).

You've got a few more days to submit your translations at
http://pootle.locamotion.org/projects/pootle/ so we can ship the best
web translation tool with your language supported.

Remember if Pootle 2.0 was already translated to your language you only
need to translate 578 new words.

This release candidate depends on a yet to be released version of
Translate Toolkit, you'll find a snapshot release of the toolkit
alongside Pootle's tarball at
http://translate.sourceforge.net/snapshots/Pootle-2.1.0-rc1/

We do not recommend installing this snapshot release, run directly
from checkout instead, you can avoid installing the snapshot release
of toolkit by copying or symlinking the
translate-toolkit-1.7.1-pre2/translate/ directory into the
Pootle-2.1.0-rc1/ directory

For more information about the exciting features in the upcoming 2.1.0
version check previous release announcement

I am in the process of upgrading my server (slightly dated SVN trunk

update_stores management command to suit my needs and noticed some
changes. My changes adds a scan files prior to the update commands to
detect and add new files or deal with removed files and thus
preventing certain errors from occurring during the update.

My question to the Pootle devs is why this is not the default
behaviour of update_stores, or am I going to run into problems doing
this? I notice that the refresh_stats command now rescans files, so
maybe I need to run it first before update stores.

mostly historical reasons, refresh_stats was introduced in pootle 2.0
which did not store units in the database at all. so there was not way
to refresh stats for a non existing file.

update_stores was introduced in the very beginning of the 2.1
development process and it wasn't clear yet how things will progress,
we'll probably move scan_files to update_stores before release.

I would prefer this second solution, but the problem is, we need to
step into the Python source code of Pootle. Can you give us some
hints where we can find the storing of a new translation entry and
the searching for an existing one? This relates to the
local_apps/pootle_store-project, doesn't it. Do you have any
further documentations which you can give us?

you'll need to know the basics of Django http://docs.djangoproject.com
to be able to delve comfortably in Pootle's code.

most string and file handling code is in local_apps/pootle_store, Unit
model is used to represent a string and its translation, Store model
represents a translation file with a bunch of units.

to really understand Store and Unit you also need to be familiar with
Translate Toolkit base storage class abstraction
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/base_classes and
http://translate.sourceforge.net/doc/api/translate.storage-module.html

also check http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/pootle/terminology

I'm not sure what is your usecase so I'm giving a very generic answer
here. if you wanted pootle to translate anything you need to implement
a storage class so Pootle would know how to import strings into the
database. (or it might be easier to just generate xliff or po files and
let pootle import these).

translation units have unique ids (unique per file) these ids could be
anything (in po files it is the source string, in subtitles it is the
timestamp, etc.) Pootle stores these arbitrary id with their MD5SUM in
the database (Unit.unitid and Unit.unitid_hash), you can use the MD5SUM
to look up units efficiently.

so just define good ids for your translations, get the strings with
these ids into pootle and the webservice can load and modify units
based on the idhash. this should even work across different pootle
installs.

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.0.5 released

2010-07-10 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah
Hola lists,

Today the Translate team released version 2.0.5 of Pootle. Get it from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/translate/files/Pootle/2.0.5/Pootle-2.0.5.tar.bz2/download

Pootle is a web based system for translation and translation
management.

This work was made possible by many volunteers and our funders:
- ANLoc, funded by IDRC http://africanlocalisation.net/

This is a bugfix release but it also introduces 3 new translations
(Uighur, Hungarian and Portuguese) and updates to Croatian translation
is almost done (currently at 70%).

This release also introduces a change to the permissions system. making
it simpler to understand and it now reflects what users expect. from
now on Language and Translation Project permissions completely override
default server permissions instead of add to them allowing setting more
restrictive permissions.

 Highlighted Bugfixes

 - Fix for data integrity errors after deleting languages under Django
   1.2.
 - Password change and rest forms now work under Django 1.2.
 - Fixed a bug that caused unnecessary updates to search index.
 - fix for local terminology detection
 - removed a couple of icelandic strings that somehow slipped into the
   english language file.

As always to get the most out of Pootle it is best to use it with
the latest version of translate toolkit.

This will probably be the last maintenance release for the 2.0 branch
of Pootle. we will focus on stabilizing 2.1

experimental captcha middleware to help combat spam on Pootle servers
that allow anonymous suggestions or translations.

you can see the captcha live on http://pootle.locamotion.org and you

USE_CAPTCHA = True

note however the captcha is experimental it is ugly and untranslated.
only use it if you really need it.

get() returned more than one Directory -- it returned 3! Lookup

so while I'm not sure how this happened (would appreciate more info),
here is how to fix it.

you need to get a django shell, if you are running from checkout use
the command

./manage.py shell

if you are running from an install use the command

django-admin.py shell --settings='pootle.settings'

you'll get a python shell, with the django environment loaded, then run
the following python commands

from pootle_app.models import Directory
Directory.objects.filter(parent__isnull=True).exclude(pootle_path='/').delete()

this should delete the broken Directory objects causing the tracebacks.

Re: [translate-pootle] Cannot hide a project

sorry for taking too long to respond to this one.

cecilia.alberts...@lunascape.co.jp wrote:

How to restrict the nobody permissions for one project only,
so as to prevent anonymous users from viewing that project,
while allowing them to view all other projects?

ok there are too limitations in Pootle that make this impossible at the
moment.

1- we do not have project level permissions, permissions follow the URL
heirarchy, so server level- language level - (Language/Project)

2- permissions work in a way similar to Unix/Linux file system
permissions. to hide something from view you have to restict the
permissions of the parent. so the only way to hide a top level objects
is by restricting the server wide permission.

there is already a feature request for fixing the project level
permissions issue, it will hopefully be fixed in 2.1, I don't know what
to do about the 2nd issue. so I don't think it will be possible to
completely hide projects yet. please make a feature request on
http://bugs.locamotion.org so we don't forget.

It seems setting the permissions for a language or a project
to something more restrictive than the server-wide permissions
(i.e., the ones set on the Admin permissions top page)
has no effect - the server-wide permissions still apply, allowing
anonymous users to still view the project I tried to hide.

Yes it was not possible to set more restrictive permissions, only more
liberal. we thought of permissions as cascading (they add up).

however we it seems that our permission system was a bit confusing for
users so in 2.1 we made a change to make deeper permission completely
override parent permissions. I just backported this fix to stable (it's
already in SVN and will be released as part of the upcoming Pootle
2.0.5).

so now Language will completely override server wide and translation
project within a languages will completely override both language
and server wide permissions. this will allow you to set more
restrictive permissions.

this means one of your python libraries is installed as a zip file (aka

so the solution is to create a directory where the apache user has

SetEnv PYTHON_EGG_CACHE /tmp/eggcache

replace /tmp/eggcache with the full path of the directory you created

unfortunately there is no way to migrate your data between

What has changed between the versions?

prior to 2.0.3 we had some custom sql queries for
calculating top contributor stats. this was mostly there because django
1.0 did not support aggregate queries.

in 2.0.3 we switched to aggregate queries for Django 1.1 and a slow
summing in python for django 1.0. so it is compatible with PostgreSQL
and any other database that Django supports but users are recommended
to use Django 1.1 or 1.2 for better performance (not only version 2.0.4
is compatible with django 1.2)

Would love to hear your impressions on Pootle performance under
PostgreSQL. specially the 2.1 branch which is more database heavy.

We (exactly my customers) have plans to push whole books into pootle
and the PostgreSQL and then we will have a Database in TByte format...

you might want to look at the Unit model from 2.1 you may be able to
push data directly into the Pootle database (auto generated terminology
files are a good example, they are not files at all actually, just a
bunch of database records).

100.000.000 and more rows in PostgreSQL is funny... and each
column another langage... Can imagine this amount of data?

I have imported Space-Data from the ESO into PostgreSQL for
analyzing and I got only 2% of the ESO but in my Database it blow up
 to 7 TByte without crashing.

yes I know of course of the amazing powers of PostgreSQL, but I was
asking about testing Pootle 2.1 alpha 3 in particular, to make sure we
don't have any queries or design decisions that negatively impact
PostgreSQL.

Heaven, if pootle support this... :-D I see aready $$ in my

if you promise to give us some of that $$ we'll make sure pootle
supports it :-P

We are using PostgreSQL to import all data and have one language
per column. I have customers which are translating reports and
even books and some times there are more then one person working on
 one file.

ok so Pootle 2.1 has a different structure for the database tables.
since we have to support any number of languages we can't put each
language in a column. but still it might fit your workflow to just
insert records directly in the Pootle database.

I suggest you install 2.1 alpha3 and have a look at the database
structure. it is not ready yet (that's why it is called alpha), but
hopefully the database structure will not change much.

no

I only used packaged versions of mod_wsgi but it doesn't sound like a

doubt it, it is either the path for the db file, permissions or maybe
the db file is corrupt

 - Why does a Pootle: Install page appear? I don't want Pootle to
reinstall and/or reinitialize my pootle.db, since I guess all the
vital information is stored in that single file, with no chance of
recovery if lost. (I have made a backup.)

Pootle triggers the installer when no database file exists (or when
certain tables are missing), there is no straight forward way to
distinguish between missing database file and failure to open the
database file. so the installer is triggered and then fails.

Even if nobody recognizes this exact problem, perhaps somebody can
tell me if it is more likely to be a problem with mod_wsgi, with
 Pootle, or with Apache?

adapt it to our needs for translation maintenance.

yy sounds exciting

Sphinx utilizes a light markup language called *ReStructedText*
[3][4][5] which boils down to plain text paragraphs with non-nestable
inline markers (*roles*). Sphinx parses such documents and outputs a
variety of formats, including but not limited to HTML and PDF. It
will grow an extractor for translatable strings this summer (a POT
builder). (Or is directly feeding strings into a database more
 appropriate?)

if you implement a Translate Toolkit storage class it becomes easier to
write a converter to POT and for pootle to directly support the source
format (pootle basically converts to it's own in database format that's
also a translate toolkit storage class).

Text documents usually consist of large paragraphs and cannot be
reliably split into fine-grained individual messages. Thus it is
absolutely crucial to our workflow to identify small changes (eg. typo
fixes) and show them appropriately to translators. I plan to extend
Pootle's capabilites in this domain and integrate it with
 ReStructedText and Sphinx.

this is certainly something we'd love to improve, making pootle more
useful for document translation. what are your plans exactly?

I already checked out SVN trunk and toyed around a bit locally. I
would like to contribute my changes back to upstream -- do you require
any contribution forms or some such? Did Git gain any significant
 traction?

Nah I don't think we have much legalese to go through (Dwayne would
know more), I'm using git-svn on my machine last time I tried working
from two separate git-svn checkouts was a bit messy but I'm sure we can
figure something out.

we thought Django took care of setting up mysql tables as UTF-8 but

the database.

for example when you create the mysql database you should use this
syntax;

CREATE DATABASE pootle CHARACTER SET utf8;

One of our PO files is relatively large, 3116 strings, and opening it

suggestions. This file exists in 11 languages, and at one point we
had several people working on it under separate languages
simultaneously, mainly just marking strings as fuzzy. This caused the
server to hang, calling for a reboot. I also tried working on some of
our smaller files in different languages simultaneously in four tabs
in my browser, with the same result.

Apache performance degrades rapidly the moment swap is used. in fact it
is often advised to disable swap alltogether on an apache server since
Linux will swap way before memory is full.

but once you disable swap running out of memory doesn't just slow
things down, it leads to instability since linux will start killing
random processes, so you need to bring memory usage down first.

so how much ram does this server have? what else is it doing apart from
hosting pootle? are you using memcached? using top or ps what's the
average memory use of a single apache process?

there are a few things to try, first switch to mod_wsgi instead of
mod_python it seems to use less memory.

http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.2/howto/deployment/modwsgi/

you can also try using the apache worker mpm module instead of prefork
and use a smaller number of threads.
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/worker.html

finally you could try mod_wsgi's daemon mode, this allows u to isolate
the memory hungry Pootle into two processes and leave other apache
processes will be quite small.

 Another Yay.

 snip

  * The main Django database is now much larger, in Pootle 2.0 the
database was quite small, its size depended on the number of
languages, projects and files. in 2.1 it's size depends on the
number of translation strings as well and even the smallest
project has thousands of these. This should have no negative impact
on performance but larger Pootle installations might find using
sqlite3 as the database engine impractical. using MySQL (or
PostgreSQL) will have a very measurable impact on performance.

 Is a DB converter included?

you mean converting from sqlite to mysql?

no unfortunately that's still not possible (maybe someone knows of an
outside tool that can do that?), it may be possible to implement with
the upcoming Django 1.2 through Django's data export mechanism. will
look into it when it's released.

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.1.0 Alpha2 snapshot release

2010-04-17 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah
Hello again list,

It's been a month since we released the first Alpha release of Pootle
2.1.0, it didn't get much testing (I'm heartbroken :-( but that didn't
stop us from working hard so here comes Pootle 2.1.0 Alpha 2, another
snapshot release to give you a taste of things to come.

No new features where introduced in this release, but we rewrote the
implementation of the translate page for better performance. much
better performance in fact in our benchmarks apache was able to serve 3
times as many requests per second because of this optimization. it also
brings down memory use considerably.

Now you have no excuse, if you've complained about memory use,
performance under a large number of users or high concurrency you must
test this release and send us many many wonderful patches, bug reports,
patches, feature requests and patches. (did I say patches? please send
patches)

We also introduced two new ./manage.py (or django-admin.py) commands:
 * (sync_stores) for mass saving new translations to disk
 * (update_stores) for mass updating database with new strings from
file system

You can download the snapshot from
http://translate.sourceforge.net/snapshots/Pootle-2.1.0-alpha2/

some features depend on an unreleased version of Translate Toolkit,
you'll find a snapshot release of toolkit on the same url.

We do not recommend installing this snapshot release, run directly
from checkout instead, you can avoid installing the snapshot release
of toolkit by copying or symlinking the
translate-toolkit-1.6.1-pre/translate/ directory into the
Pootle-2.1.0-alpha2/ directory

This should be our last alpha release, we hope to release a beta by the
end of this month. remember Alpha release means anything could happen,
do not use this snapshot for real work we don't know of any case where
you'll loose data but we won't be surprised if it happens, some things
might not work and the database structure is sure to change between now
and release day. we have upgrade scripts for 2.0 users, but there will
be no upgrade path from 2.1.0 alpha to 2.1.0 stable.

I'm pasting information from the 2.1.0 Alpha1 announcement for those
who missed it and don't know what Pootle 2.1.0 is about:

New features:

* Support monolingual formats: yes this means Pootle will directly
support Java properties, PHP arrays and Subtitle files directly
without having to use a converter (subtitles support depend on
  Gaupol http://home.gna.org/gaupol/).

* Automatic glossary extraction: Pootle can generate terminology
stores based on the most frequently used words in your project just
follow the manage glossary link in translate tab. If you don't like
some of the terms suggested you can delete them (by the time 2.1 is
released you'll be able to edit terms and even create new ones).

That's all the new features we introduced, but they required major
changes. Pootle now stores translations in the database. which has
many consequences:

* Pootle no longer depends on statsdb, statsdb was a major bottleneck
for concurrency due to being tied to sqlite. I think change will
make many people happy. not that this alpha still depends on sqlite
and creates a stats.db but isn't really used except for testing,
we'll get rid of statsdb completely soon.

* Translations files do not reflect current state of translations
automatically. Now that translations live mostly in the database the
translations files under the po/ directory do not get updated on
every translation. Translations get saved to file by demand when you
download them from the web only. there is an optional
localsettings.py variable AUTOSYNC that forces translations to be
saved immediately (same behavior as always) but it has a negative
effect on performance and should only be used if you have other
applications or scripts that need to access the files directly.

* The main Django database is now much larger, in Pootle 2.0 the
database was quite small, its size depended on the number of
languages, projects and files. in 2.1 it's size depends on the
number of translation strings as well and even the smallest project
has thousands of these. This should have no negative impact on
performance but larger Pootle installations might find using sqlite3
as the database engine impractical. using MySQL (or PostgreSQL) will
have a very measurable impact on performance.

* If you want to test upgrading an existing installation of Pootle
2.0.x you'll need to install South (http://south.aeracode.org/). it
might be packaged for your distro under the name django-south, if
  not just run easy_install South

 Hi Everybody,

Ditto. Agree that writing to database is far more efficient compared
 with POs.

Currently we need to rely on a Make build that involves rsync/scp to
copy the POs to local environment for post-processing and deployment.
There is no manual download from Web going on here. I think we need
a command or something that allows Pootle to generate a checkout copy
or trigger the PO update, then that will be ideal without having to
 go back to AUTOSYNC.

And, will there be any improvement in speed with update from
templates? Currently it takes half a minute for a language with us.
They are not really big files and I have python-levenshtein installed.

no we did not change anything in update from template, in fact it might
be slightly slower now since it is done first to files and then result
is reparsed into database.

will see if we can improve it. how big are these files? are they
publicly available?

Distinguished by two codes sr-Latn and sr-Cyrl. The same issue
occurs in Chinese Hans/Hant/Ming/* and has been hacked around
previously by appending the specific ISO-3166 country code where
   its most frequently needed.

What I'm hoping for is to use the ISO-3066 alphabet codes as
part of the language tag somewhere.

This is indeed the first time I hear about ISO-3066.

As one of the iso-codes maintainers, I know about ISO-15924,
which is meant to be a standard for script names. We include it
in the package since October 2007. Reference is
   http://unicode.org/iso15924/

  Ah thanks. Good to know.

Example entry in the XML file we provide:

   numeric_code=220
   name=Cyrillic /
   iso_15924_entry

   .../...
   iso_15924_entry
   alpha_4_code=Latn
   numeric_code=215
   name=Latin /

These examples use your own example. Note that the alpha4 code is
   indeed the same.

I'd say that ISO-15924 seems to be an evolution of 3066 or
   something like this.

I guess so. I only found the ISO-3066 code this week in some fairly
old university language papers about Serbian/Croatian alphabet
  splits.

WRT your general message, I agree that using ISO 15924 codes in
locale names would be a great progress over the current hacks
implemented in various ways (zh_CN vs. zh_TW as a hack between
Simplified and Traditional Chineseor Hans vs. Hant, or
variants for Serbian, or probably others I don't know about).

So far I know of Chinese and Serbian for certain, with hints
indicating Azerbaijan and Croatian will need it in future as well.

...and Belarusian Latin is assigned to b...@latin in glibc (IIRC
Serbian uses '@Latn' tag for the same thing). Actually, these locale
'variants' don't have good support in different l10n software (f.e.
Rosetta doesn't know about their existance at all).

Poolte uses glibc locale's and supports codes like b...@latin, they're
inconsistently used for other types of variations like c...@valencia but
the good news is they work fine with our tools

 memory crazy.

I'm not sure that this would drive up memory use though.

It sounds like mod_wsgi may be along the direction I am
seeking. As our Pootle server is only used by a small number of
users, concurrency should not be an issue so long the memory is in
 control.

However, I just tried and found Pootle just hung there without
returning anything once I restarted Apache with the wsgi daemon mode
settings change and requested the Pootle front page. Not sure if the
settings are correct but I'm not sure how to debug though.

I just tried daemon mode and it worked fine for me. where you running
fine on mod_wsgi before switching to daemon mode?

we know older versions of xapian can cause deadlocks but pootle checks
for that and is supposed to avoid loading xapian under apache if
version is less that 1.0.13

mod_wsgi documentation mentions an obscure situation where small
default unix socket buffer size can lead to deadlocks. check the
receive-buffer-size and send-buffer-size options mentioned in
http://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/ConfigurationDirectives#WSGIDaemonProcess
maybe that's the problem you are facing?

I remember you had weird deadlocks before and I sent you a recipe for
logging all function calls until the deadlock, you can use the same
recipe to debug.

Re: [translate-pootle] XLIFF Fuzzy Import

 Hello all,

I am using pootle to translate XLIFF files generated from
java.properties files. I looked at the documentation, but I can't
find the answer to my problem. The tool that I use to
export .properties files into XLIFF, generates a simple XLIFF format
 like this (here without header)

 /trans-unit
 trans-unit id=LoginDialog_LoginMessage xml:space=preserve
 source xml:lang=enPlease login./source
 target xml:lang=frVeuiller vous identifier/target
 /trans-unit
 trans-unit id=LoginDialog_LoginTitle xml:space=preserve
 source xml:lang=enLogin/source
 target xml:lang=frIdentification/target
 /trans-unit

My problem is that pootle mark the all the translated French strings
as Fuzzy when I import this file. So the translators can not just
translate the untranslated string, because they have to view also the
fuzzy strings when they click on quick translate.

 1) Is there a way to view only untranslated strings ? or to not mark
the already translated strings as Fuzzy ? or to mass unmark them as
 fuzzy later ?

I'm not sure what the issue with fuzzy is, but you can step through
untranslated only by clicking on the untranslated link from the review
tab, it is not a very prominent link you'll find it mixed with all the
quality checks links.

 2) Is there a way to disable the registration, and only let the
 administrator register new users ?

yes the localsettings.py file has a variable CAN_REGISTER which is
set to True by default, set it to False and registration is disabled.

we don't specify protocol at all while linking to javascript files

it might be that page caching is introducing problems, is this problem

there is no avoiding that Django apps are memory intensive specially
when compared to PHP. Pootle is even worse due to caching parsed

at the moment the only thing you can do to bring down memory use is by
reducing the number of files kept in memory. change the variable
PARSE_POOL_SIZE in the localsettings.py file. experiment with very low
values first and increase it slowly.

you could also try using mod_wsgi's daemon mode to limit the number of
apache processes actually running python and let the others just work
as a proxy. in theory this should improve memory use at the cost of
concurrency. (explained @

we have not tested daemon mode, so no idea how well it performs. if you
do test it please share your experience.

Is there an easy way to disable caching while I'm customizing the CSS

caching of templates only works for non logged-in (anonymous) users so
if you login you can test your template changes.

CSS is cached by the browser not django, on firefox you can explicitly
ask for a complete refresh (ignoring javascript, css and image caches)
by holding shift while you click on the reload button (shift+reload).

I don't know if other browsers have a similar feature.

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.0.1 released

2010-01-11 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah
Today the Translate team released version 2.0.1 of Pootle, Pootle is a
web based system for translation and translation management.

This is bug fix and translation release. get it from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/translate/files/Pootle/2.0.1/Pootle-2.0.1.tar.bz2/download

Thanks to the work of many volunteer contributors this release brins
the number of languages Pootle 2.0 is available in to 28.

14 more languages have been fully translated (Akan, Belarusian,
Catalan, Valencian Catalan, Chinese, Finnish, French, German, Italian,
Japanese, Northen Sotho, Polish and Brazillian Portuguese).with two
more languages nearly done (Taiwanese Chinese and Swedish).

Highlited improvements:
 - Turn conflicts into suggestions when updating from version control
 - refresh_stats will add cached statistics to memcached if possible
making subsequent visits to front page much faster
 - Pootle works with symlinked files again
 - minor fixes to XLIFF support and permissions

The latest verion of Translate Toolkit (1.5.2) has a couple of fixes
that affect Pootle and improve it's support for older versions of
Python and mod_wsgi, we recommend upgrading Translate Toolkit as well.

2010-01-08 Thread Alaa Abd El Fattah
the original error is not related to indexing (deque is used for the
file parse pool, used to avoid reparsing the same file multiple times).

I need more info to figure this out, attached is a patch will will
display a full traceback instead of just the warning, please apply it,
switch back to Xapian (you'll need to delete the lucene index
directories) and run refresh_stats again.

as for the pylucene problem, it is probably related to version (being
a pain to install and not commonly packaged PyLucene doesn't get much
testing outside my machine). do you know what version of lucene you are
using (I'll need both the python api and the java lucene version).

this had no effects to the error-logging. But it effects how many
xliff-files will be refreshed in stats.db when recomputing the files.
With 2/2 about 16 of 22 files per directory couldn't be read. I got
the read exclamation marks with the corresponding message. Currently
I'm using 40/10 and now the exclamations marks disappeared completely.

Re: [translate-pootle] Pootle integration

Bernard Chan bern...@goanimate.com wrote:

Right now, I generate the POT for our project with a mixture of
xgettext and dynamically generated messages offline, then the POTs
are copied to the expected directories at the remote Pootle server.
However, then, I found myself having to manually login as admin to
update messages from template to get a more up-to-date view of the
 new messages every time.

yes that's what you need to do, since we can't make any assumptions
about the presence of templates or how up to date they are (or even how
in sync each language team is) updating translations to match templates
has to be done manually (assumption here is that it's a rare operation,
not one that you run on a daily basis).

if you update from template through the web interface stats should also
update.

do note however that anonymous (non logged in) users always get a cached
copy of a page, it might take a few minutes (maximum 10 minutes by
default) for updates to show. logged in users will always get updated
stats.

I'm asking this because I expect no admin will be online locally to
refresh the message list for each round of message change once I
release the portal to the actual translation teams. We are thinking
about having an automated process that publishes POT updates to
Pootle on schedule, but I'm not sure whether there is anything we can
do to let translation teams know about changes easily that allow them
to work on new/updated strings with a short turnaround time. I think
the easiest is to have translators visit Pootle regularly but still
they need to see something actually has changed.

I'm a bit confused at what you need here? do you want to eliminate the
manual update from template step or just make sure translators are
informed after an update?

if it's the later that's already solved, a news item is created after
an update from templates operation. translators can track the rss feed
for their translation projects.

I noticed Pootle 2 front page has an RSS. I think it may be great if
notifications for message updates to specific languages and/or
projects can be published over it, though I guess right now that is
not intended to be used that way?

messages are published in the most relevant place, so front page gets
news of new users, projects and languages. language page gets news of
new translation projects added to the language, and translation
projects get news of files reaching 100%, version control operations,
update from templates and file uploads.

this is optimized for larger installs where news might get noisy if
it's all mashed together, however there is an undocumented trick to
make news recursive just add all=True as a get variable to the url

so for instance
http://pootle.locamotion.org/notices/?all=True
http://pootle.locamotion.org/notices/rss.xml?all=True

will show all news items on the pootle.locamotion.org site and
http://pootle.locamotion.org/fr/notices/?all=True
http://pootle.locamotion.org/fr/notices/rss.xml?all=True

will display all news related to french including all french
translation projects.

 2. Exactly, what is the best way to configure so that I can prevent
most users seeing specific projects? Specifically, I would like to
hide Pootle and Terminology from all users except admin. I saw
'default' and 'nobody'. Are they reserved for this kind of purpose?

yes nobody is anyone who is not logged in, default is anyone logged in
(apart from that you can set user specific permissions). admins should
get access to anything regardless of permissions settings. so if you
disable view permissions it should not show up.

the only problem is pootle permissions follow the url scheme, so you
can't apply permissions to the pootle project, only to the pootle
project under a specific language :-(

 3. If someone manages to mess up the POT or translated POs on Pootle
or whatever messy as that, we may need to rollback to some safe past
revision. I know this is not directly related to Pootle, but what is
the typical strategy to safeguard thess kinds of mishaps on Pootle?
To version control the entire po directory? If we rollback on the
filesystem, will there be any consistency concern if something is
cached at Pootle? I'm currently on an Apache WSGI integration, and
 have activated memcached support.

I'm not sure I understand fully the kind of scenario you are worried
about. not one should have any access to POTs except admins so these
should be really hard to mess up.

as for bad translations, you can use permissions to make sure only
trusted users can translate (untrusted/unproven ones can be given
suggest permissions so they still contribute). you can also delegate to
language admins or project admins so they can help decide who is
trusted.

Pootle has some version control support. it detects if the
translation directory was checked out of version control (for example
if the po/terminology/ar/ directory has a .svn
