[Ubnt_users] Unifi: Pre-Authorization Guest access via hostname - is anyone using this?

2018-01-11 Thread Andris Bjornson
I noted that fairly recently, guest control -> pre-authorization access
quietly gained the ability to whitelist by hostname as well as IP address.
This is hugely exciting!

I can't find any documentation on this, and was trying to find users
talking about using it in the forum...but didn't come up with anyone.

Some questions I'd greatly appreciate answers to if anyone knows them:

   - how does this feature work? When I enter a domain here, is it the
controller that resolves it to an IP? Or is it the AP?
   - or is the access list on the AP actually setup by hostname such that
my question about where DNS is resovled doesn't matter?
   - Does it work for sites spread across multiple IPs/CDNs?
   - Is use of wildcards possible? I.e. *.domain.com?

And most importantly:

   - does it work well? Any positive or negative stories?

thanks in advance!

Re: [Ubnt_users] Unifi mesh

2017-08-28 Thread Roy

The mesh units talk to each other on 5Ghz via 802.11ac.   Assuming
one unit attaches to your fiber and the other two are remote, you
will be sending the remotes over a single 5 Ghz channel.

If you assume that each AP gets 1/3 the load, you will have a
single 5Ghz channel trying to support 66 clients at 5Mbps each.

What would be worse is allowing the clients to connect via 5Ghz
and really screw up the channel.

I looked at this recently for our parking lot which has similar light
fixtures. Ours have a wiring access panel at the bottom of the pole where I
had planned to insert an injector and just run a patch cable to the top and
attach something like a UAP AC Mesh. That would keep it as clean as
possible at the top.

Re: [Ubnt_users] Unifi controller system requirements at large scale

2017-05-09 Thread Brandon Gilles via Ubnt_users
Mainly it's UI responsiveness. We have single sites w/ ~300 APs and ~5k
users and this works fine. Depending on roaming behavior, the client
machine looking at the controller becomes the limit.

So if you are looking at the UI, using a nice computer it will still be
super-snappy w/ lots of users on a single site.

Smaller sites have much less impact - as statistics are only being shown
for the sites being currently looked at.

Don’t really use the mesh, just use them because they are cheap and dual band.

2017-02-23 Thread Brandon Gilles via Ubnt_users
My pleasure. Will try to do announcement when we have new stuff on
demo.ubnt.com to check out.

Oh - speaking of which: For some of you doing RFP responses for major
organizations... the feedback we've gotten is that some have written into
them is requirement for 'lifetime warranty'.

We not have 'UniFi Elite' - where you can sign up for a yearly service,
which includes warranty (which extends to as long as you have the service),
improved RMA (including option for advance-shipment), and full cloud
solution.

Before this has been a block for some proposing to such RFPs, now should be
good. Elite is an option (all existing options still exist of course, and
actually support, warranty, and self-installed cloud - AWS, Digital Ocean,
etc.)) are all better as a result of this effort.

Cheers,
Brandon

My pleasure.

Yes, you can use group edit for this (and other things):

https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000170548-UniFi-Group-Configuration-for-Access-Points

So this way you can just select all the radios you want to do this to, and
change them all at once. Or if you want to do the whole site - just do the
single checkbox at the top, which will select all the radios in the site.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Brandon

Oh - another question Brandon if you have a sec.

I see i can disable the 5.8GHz ssids on each unifi unit manuallybut I
think there's no way to do this site-wide...is there?

When I make a wireless network on a site - I think there's no setting to
say "this network should only be available on 2.4 GHz"...correct?

Re: [Ubnt_users] Unifi Mesh: Questions and Outdoor+ end of life?

2017-02-22 Thread Brandon Gilles via Ubnt_users
Hi Andris,

Great questions. Thanks for using UniFi.

UBNT-Brandon here (to clarify).

Outdoor+: We are not producing these anymore, but will be available for
purchase probably for quite some time. We do announcements through
distributors rather than directly.

Meshing:

   1. Wireless uplink itself has improved a ton because of the Mesh
effort. It should be quite solid now - and hence should be able to leave
uplink connectivity monitor running (I do for example on all my sites). Of
course feel free to ping me directly if you see otherwise.
   2. Automatic failover allows the Mesh to disregard your intentions for
it, in case of a failover. So the idea is you can select your ideal
topology, and then enable automatic failover. This will allow the mesh to
heal into a different topology say should a wired uplink connection die
(cable cut, water in a cable, etc.), for example.
   3. Yes - 5GHz can be used for backhaul only. Simply disable 5GHz WLANs
on the Mesh units, and then 5GHz will be used for backhaul only.
You can even have a dedicated say UAP-AC-M for backhaul (using directive
antenna optionally), which feeds ethernet to dedicated client UAP-AC-M.
   4. Haven't seen anyone do diplexers yet. Agreed - the diplexers off the
shelf are generally more expensive than the UAP-AC-M. Some have just used
2.4GHz airMAX antennas and found them to perform decently as dual-band
antennas. We're also working on a dual-band directive antenna.

Here's an article detailing the state of wireless uplink and mesh:
https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002262328-UniFi-Feature-Guide-Wireless-Uplink

And here's a compatibility guide w/ airMAX antennas:
https://help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002652248-UniFi-UAP-AC-M-and-airMAX-Antenna-Compatibility-Matrix

The mesh failover (say in case of ethernet being cut, or power loss) is
about 1-2 minutes right now. We're working on a new version (and you're
welcome to try it if you'd like) that fails over in under 10 seconds.

Thanks again,
UBNT-Brandon

[Ubnt_users] Unifi Mesh: Questions and Outdoor+ end of life?

2017-02-22 Thread Andris Bjornson
Hello,

Hoping to get some answers to users familiar with the UAP-AC-M and
UAP-AC-M-PRO, in particular with the mesh deployments.

Outdoor+

   - I heard from my distributor that Outdoor+ is end of life and new
orders are not possible. Is this true? If so, this seems rather sudden?
I can't seem to find an official EOL announcement from Ubiquiti?

Meshing

   - Regarding meshing: In the past (pre AC-M units) I'd tried the
"upstream connectivity monitor and wireless uplink" and had problems. In
particular, UAPs would go into the wireless uplink state or would flap when
upstream connectivity monitor detected extremely brief disruptions
   - Because of this, I currently have upstream connectivity monitor and
wireless uplink disabled on my production unifi networks.
   - I think I understand that with the addition of the "enable automatic
uplink failover" checkbox...I should be able to safely enable "upstream
connectivity monitor" and disable "automatic uplink failover" if i want to
experiment with a small number of mesh uplinks *without* any of my
existing non mesh Outdoor+ units trying to do wireless backhaul. Is this
   correct?
   - Ideally, I'd like to reserve 5GHz entirely for wireless backhaul/mesh
and to not make it available at all to endusers for direct client wifi
   connections. Is this possible?
   - Has anyone had any luck using a diplexer to split the 2.4GHz and 5.8
GHz feeds onto different antennas? Seems not too tough to put a 2.4 GHz
sector on 2.4 GHz, but I can't seem to find an attractive SMA
connectorized, small, directional antennasomething like a PowerBeam
M5-22, but with SMA connectors. Also seems kind of cost-prohibitive to
   implement.

Thanks in advance - any input greatly appreciated!

Oh interesting, it hadn't occurred to me to look for the xmx setting only
on the /jre/bin/java process and not on the ace.jar process. The
screenshot is helpful in understanding this.

Looking forward to hearing what you hear back on whether it's expected that
the ace.jar processes still remain "-Xmx 1024M"

Hey Mike,

Tried to adjust using

unifi.xmx=2048
unifi.xms=2048

as you and others in the forum have suggestedbut it seemed not to apply
when we looked at the output of ps. We saw:

1607 ?Sl 0:00 unifi -home /usr/lib/jvm/java-7-openjdk-amd64 -cp

We manually edited /usr/lib/unifi/bin/unifi.init to set the heap and it
applied.

Any gueses what might have caused the settings in system.properties not to
work? I saw your comment "Just make sure not to have any characters after

will be ignored." but we had no extra characters. Here were the last lines

2017-02-07 Thread Mike Dudgeon via Ubnt_users
Hi Andris,

You're welcome!

In our testing we found that Oracle Java 8 was more efficient compared to
OpenJDK. I would suggest switching the JVM. Actually, as of 5.3.x+, we
dropped support of Java 6, the minimum is 7, but we actually recommend 8,
so it would be best to upgrade the JVM anyway.

RE: the heap size. You can do this by adding this to the system.properties
file

and restarting the controller service:

unifi.xmx=2048
unifi.xms=2048

Just make sure not to have any characters after each line, otherwise they
will be ignored.

Cheers,
Mike

Do you think it would make a difference to run oracle java?

Finally, we're going to increase the java heap size from the default 1GB to
2GB via JVM_MAX_HEAP_SIZE.

Also - I've noted that the t2.medium instance type is burstable...meaning
when we hit this high CPU problem, we exhaust our Amazon CPU credits.
We'll move this to a non-burstable instance type and see if when not
limited by CPU credits the machine is able to recover from the high cpu.

Hi Andris,

Let me quickly touch on 5.4.x. We have 5.4.11 stable candidate out which
fixes multiple migration issues (present before 5.3.x and 5.4.x) as well as
the RADIUS profile migration issue that was present in 5.4.9. We hope to
have it released as stable by Monday the 13th.

As far as CPU use/lockups, which Java machine are you running on your AWS
instance?

Cheers,

[Ubnt_users] Unifi: Intermittent High CPU crash since upgrading to 5.3.8 (and what's the deal with 5.4.9?)

2017-02-07 Thread Andris Bjornson
Hi all,

My colleague posted this on the ubiquiti forums , but I haven't seen
anything conclusive from other users yetso thought I'd cast a wider net.

We'd been running Unifi 4.8.x on AWS for quite some time, and it's been
rock solid stable.

We recently upgraded to 5.3.8 because we're excited to start using some of
the new Unifi switches and the Unifi Mesh products.

So far our experience has been good in terms of functionality and new
features...BUT every 5-7 days unifi seems to get "stuck" in some kind of
high CPU state. ace.jar is usually seen to be taking 100%+ CPU and the
controller becomes unresponsive.

The only fixes are to restart the machine or to force kill (kill -9) the
ace.jar process and restart unifi.

We originally suspected backups of some sort were running...but the time of
day seems inconsistent. Also, we have disabled the builtin backup feature
in unifi, and we've temporarily stopped our own cron/automongobackup
process and the problem continues.

Has anyone else seen this? Any tips?

Also - I've been following Ubiquiti's talk of 5.4.9 being the next LTS
version which is awesome. We were just about to upgrade when we saw that
5.4.9 was pulled i think due to an issue with RADIUS.

Does anyone know more about what will be the next LTS release and when we
might expect it?

Thanks much!

Yes, cuts on half. It's not a dedicated radio:

Mesh: $99 2x2 dual-band concurrent 11ac
Mesh-Pro: $199 3x3 dual-band concurrent 11ac

The pricing on these affords running one day as dedicated backhaul, and one
as access, should you need the higher throughput.

I have to correct myself on something. I have not upgraded to v3.17.21, only
to v3.17.17. So maybe that will be the fix. I'll upgrade today on some and
see if that helps and report back.

We did quite a bit of testing on site and found when the RSSI was above 60db
things worked as expected. But it feel off quickly below -60db. We actually
had to double our AP count on one site to get the system to work to the
customers satisfaction. Though I hope to get it resolved and remove the
extras. Tech support logged into our server ( we host our own) and verified
all the settings. Supposedly they took it to engineering and what I got back

2016-10-30 Thread Brett A Mansfield
That would be my first thought too, but these are several batches because
they've been purchased at different times over the last year. I have several
customers that have them and the 5Ghz is fine, but the 2.4 is lack-listed at
all customer sites. I've tried changing all kinds of settings and then
separated out the networks. That's how I found it's 2.4 and not the 5.

Re: [Ubnt_users] Unifi Video troubles still

2016-09-24 Thread Gabriel Pike
Is your memory spiking just randomly before this happens? I have now seen a few
times that some unknown memory spike will disable the service until it is
restarted. Mine are also Ubuntu server 14 builds. I have a ticket with UBNT
about it and they said the issue will be fixed in a future release of 3.5,

There is no network connectivity issues. I have access to the server via ssh
and when it starts acting up i cant access the nvr interface locally. When i
restart the unifi-video service via the CLI all will work fine for awhile.
This is a fresh install on ubuntu 14, the server has minimal install.

We tried this with all sorts of failure. Too much maintenance for us.
Customers with multiple devices don’t work well with hotspot style setup.

We moved to ADSL2+ and VDSL in building. Way easier and integrates better
with most billing systems.

No experience with the Ubnt NVR appliance. But I recently got a Tablo
for over the air DVR. There are a limited set of external USB drives
which are known to not be flakey with the Tablo. Perhaps it's a USB
drive going to sleep type issue?

Re: [Ubnt_users] Unifi Video NVR performance issues

2016-09-08 Thread Chris Ruschmann via Ubnt_users
We had this problem even on the beefiest of servers, dual proc E5 64Gb of
ram, LSI raid with 8 drives and 1gig write cache. We still occasionally
have the issue and have invested many man hours trying to fix. With that
said, it seems like the software itself is the issue.

UBNT needs to quit developing in Java. It sucks, and will always suck.
MongoDB was a poor choice as well, or at least how they implemented
things. It has far too large of a dataset, so you can't back the thing up.
They need to quit storing things that way. My advice to them is to create
a separate database for every camera, and have a database for the main NVR
operations if they want to continue down that road. That way when one
piece of the puzzle doesn't fit, the whole thing doesn't come crashing
down. I have Datasets that are 250GB large keeping track of 25TB of
footage. You can't reasonably back that up or scan it for errors without
waiting several days, so upgrades tend to be all or nothing without
rollbacks.

Version 3.4 works better, still not great. And on top of that, a new fix
they posted for enhancing performance seems to have completely corrupted
one of our databases we tried it on for one of our larger installs. Now we
may have to wipe several months of footage that is critical. They have
since removed the post without a sorry or an explanation...

At the end of the day, if it's mission critical, pay for Milestone.

Chris Ruschmann

Re: [Ubnt_users] Unifi firmware issues - what's the current recommendation?

2016-08-09 Thread Mike Dudgeon via Ubnt_users
Hi Andris,

Yes, 3.7.9 is the latest release, and you can use it with 4.8.14. It should
be better for both OD+ and PicoM2 than 3.3.x, and earlier 3.7.x releases.

We will have 3.7.10 available in the near future, which fixes an issue with
AC-Lite/LR negotiation on some switches, UAP-IW (it doesn't broadcast). It
also fixes an issue with ZH, if that is something you use. Other than ZH,
these wouldn't affect the devices you mention..

Cheers,
Mike

[Ubnt_users] Unifi firmware issues - what's the current recommendation?

2016-08-09 Thread Andris Bjornson
Hi all

I only recently became aware of the thread
http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless/Connectivity-Problems-UAP-UAP-LR-UAP-Pro-UAP-Outdoor5-UAP/m-p/1643485#M175948
regarding what looks like bugs introduced into the wireless driver of
recent UAP builds.

I have been fighting intermittent and hard to troubleshoot issues like
what's described in the thread for a while now (users sometimes connect
with good wifi, but can't reach LAN or WAN). I only just stumbled onto the
thread

I'm finding somewhat inconsistent information in the threads and I was
hoping someone here could give me advice on what's most likely to result in
stability:

Here is my situation:
1) Intermittently experiencing the symptoms described on some aps: good
wifi signal, but unable to access LAN/WAN
2) Running 4.8.14 UniFi controller, and don't currently want to upgrade to
5.x controller. I don't need new features right now.
3) Operating about 50 Outdoor+ and PicoM2 unifi units, currently on
primarily 3.3.19.4015 with a few on 3.3.22.4024 that I upgraded trying to
solve this problem before i found this thread.

I think I understand that the recommendation is to try the beta firmware
here:
http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless-Beta/QCA-UAP-Test-firmware-Please-see-inside/td-p/163210.
..

Although later in that thread I see a recommendation from @UBNT-Brandon to
use the firmware from 5.2.2 beta instead? (
http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Wireless-Beta/QCA-UAP-Test-firmware-Please-see-inside/m-p/1641047..

Is this saying I can and should use 3.7.9.5089 firmware from
http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Beta-Blog/UniFi-5-2-2-is-released-for-testing/ba-p/1638878
with my 4.8.14 controller?

Any help and guidance greatly appreciated!

You can use option 43 to auto inform the UAP to the controller. I want to know
if its possiable to do the same for unifi video.

event coming up, I had the event management to make sure that they are not
allowed to set up hot spot on their COWS.

I would not use the wireless uplink for this scenario. While it does work

Re: [Ubnt_users] UniFi HT40 channel setting

2016-06-17 Thread Josh Luthman
It is a 40 MHz channel.

I believe it still does 20 MHz for 802.11b but honestly who cares, you
don't want those devices connecting in the first place.

We charge $15 per month per access point and give them a management
interface.

Works well for our larger houses.

So we have been installing a few UniFi devices, as tests, in some of our
customers houses. Mostly due to size of their structure, multiple and
varying devices and streaming devices where our basic routers just weren’t
cutting it. Its about time to charge these customers. We have been
installing them to our cloud controller for management in cases where we
wouldn’t need an onsite controller.

Questions is for others doing the same thing, what do you do for charging?
Do you charge for the equipment a one time fee plus install if applicable,
or a small one time fee and a monthly rental or management fee? I would
like to market the hell out of these for our higher end customers, but I
want to make sure we make some money. I wouldn’t mind doing a small monthly
recurring fee on top of their service fee for monthly internet service. If
they drop the service I just get our gear back. I suppose depending on how
many devices the needed, maybe a small upfront fee for each device, theres
really not much additional cost for management of several devices

I appreciate any input

Thanks

They thought that adding a larger omni would fix bad design. Unfortunately they

Just the antenna itself? Probably buy a whole new unit or just use third party
