Windows 10, which I assume you are using for want of information, installs and uses a different font selection to earlier versions of Windows. From what you say, I think you have used Direct Formatting, rather than Styles, which is OpenOffice's preferred way to work. Direct formatting often leads to trouble. Also, in what format was your document Saved - .doc or .odt? .doc does not have the sane format reliability as .odt (OpenOffice's native format). That you cannot Save a change to your document is good at present, as it may be in read-only format due to missing permissions on your new computer. Until you have the document formatted to your liking, do not (repeat: _DO NOT_) Save over the transferred file; use a different file name. To cause it to change you need to alter the defining criteria (usually the Heading styles in the document itself) or the Contents styles defined on the Styles tab of the Insert window. To access these once the Table of Contents is generated, right click on the ToC and choose Edit from the popup. To open .doc files, you need to set your computer's File Associations to tell it to use OpenOffice to open these files. Right click on a .doc file, and from the popup choose OpenOffice (or swriter.exe); then select the "always open with this application" link on that window. If your clients are using MS Windows, you should send the files as .PDF (/File /Export as PDF) if they don't need to edit them, or as .doc if they do. MS Office can open .odt files, but most MS Office users are not aware of that and will give you hassle because they have to think and perhaps change a computer setting. On the AOO-en Forum this is given; I think the solution may be applicable in this case: Q01: How do I correct the following problem?: The application "OpenOffice" was forced to quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again? A01: This is a MacOS problem, typically created when your computer shuts down unexpecedly, such as battery failure in a laptop, or power failure in a desktop. Depending on your level of MacOS, the message may say "reopen" instead of "restore". Reinstalling OpenOffice will not fix the problem so downloading and reinstalling the application is a waste of your time. Creating a new profile (Q02/A02) for this message is also a waste of your time. Quit OpenOffice. If OpenOffice → Quit is does not terminate the program use → Force Quit → OpenOffice → Force Quit. In Finder use Go (menu) → Go to Folder → ~/Library/Saved Application State → OK. It is probably best to copy the path from this tutorial and paste it into the Go to Folder dialog. Locate org.openoffice.script.savedState in the list and drag it to the trash. Launch OpenOffice. That's a ~, not a -, before /Library. You must include the ~ in the 33-character folder name. A link to the entry on the AOO-en Forum https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=89283=420635 And the details are in A01 (Answer 01) But note: I am not a Mac user, so the above suggestion is just a guess on my part. However, I doubt it will cause the computer to explode (much!) Rory > > From the finder window, she is able to open the file, but it seems like it is > running a second copy of AOO. Is the "Reopen or Close" message actually a "Recover or Close" message when you start OpenOffice? If so, this is an indication that OpenOffice and the file were improperly closed on a previous use, perhaps by a program or computer crash, or perhaps by over hasty close down of the computer, before the OpenOffice housekeeping information had been written to disk. If the message is the "Recover or Close" message then select Recover and OpenOffice will attempt to recover the file. If it is unable to do so, press Cancel, then open a backup or previously Saved version of the file. It should then be able to /File /Export as PDF. -- Rory O'Farrell - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

You can change their colour by using the Grid color dropdown just under that setting. To have local grid lines, select some cells, right click, and choose Format: select Borders tab. Select the line arrangement by the icons on left, and the line (border) weight and colour by the settings in the centre of that window. OpenPffice User Profile details are given at https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=99158#p476647 If these two procedures fail, as a diagnostic start Windows in Safe Mode and see if OpenOffice runs stable in that mode. In your PDF reader you should select your text, Copy it (Ctrl C - Cmd C on a Mac) and then Paste it (Ctrl V - Cmd V on Mac) into a blank OpenOffice Writer document. Then, in Writer, you can edit it, Save it, and generate (/File /Export as PDF) a fresh PDF for distribuution. For future revisions, edit the Writer document. One should work, if using OpenOffice, in .odt format (OO's native format) and when the work is finished /File /Export as PDF to generate PDF files for distribution; if further editing or revision is needed, edit and Save in the .odt file, regenerating the distribution PDF. OpenOffice needs an extension installed to allow it do simple editing on PDF files. This extension can be downloaded from https://extensions.openoffice.org/en/node/17351, It is possible that you may be able to cut and paste the text from the PDF file into a blank OpenOffice Writer file, whether in one unit or in chunks. Remaking such a Writer file is in my opinion a better way to proceed than attempting to edit a PDF file, whether using OpenOffice or LibreOffice, where the editing facilities for a PDF file are rudimentary. -- Rory O'Farrell - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Working on linux (currently Xubuntu 20.04.1, but updating or new installing since 8.04) I disable the making of a backup (my NAS device doesn't like that and I haven't bothered to investigate why) and the regular saving of Autorecovery information. Result: stable editing. I have found that activation of LanguageTool can also contribute some occasional instability, so if I am authoring/editing an Impress presentation, I will disable LanguageTool for the editing session. I offer this solution merely as a personal workaround - it may or may not work for you, and does not absolve you from making regular timed/dated backups. My suspicion - purely that - is that OpenOffice does not correctly Save its environment when it switches into autorecovery mode, and if interrupted by a keypress may lose its pointers to the pictures, which usually remain orphaned in the ODF archive; there may be some crosstalk between the keyboard input code and the autorecovery code. LibreOffice commissioned an expensive investigation into the lost pictures problem and spent 44,000 euro on it; however there are still occasional reports on Ask.libreoffice.org of lost pictures; how reliable is the computer experience of those reporting such losses is questionable. -- Rory O'Farrell - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

OCRing a document will usually try to recreate the exact format of the document, so you may need to edit that if you are intending to reformat the document. In addition, OCR only has an accuracy level of about 97-98%, depending on quality of the original, so you will need to proof-read to find such errors and edit to correct them. In particular, figures should be checked and rechecked if they are of importance to the document. Rory > > On Thu, 24 Sep 2020, Derek Garner wrote: > > > I am not very computer literate. If you were working in .odt format, I think you are out of luck. Also, when writing, are you pressing Enter or Shift Enter to mark the end of a paragraph? Enter is the correct method; Shift Enter displays correctly onscreen, but internally OpenOffice interprets it as a continuation character, so it treats the text as one large paragraph. For reasons programmers will understand, OpenOffice allows only 64K characters in a paragraph and starts to act funny if that is the case. So use Enter. -- Rory O'Farrell - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Use the system file search to find a file whose name you know, then start OpenOffice from the Start button, and using /File /Open, navigate to the location where the file lives and open it. If that works, you may just need to remake File Associations (Google for how) to tell computer to use OpenOffice to open such files. They may not appear on the OO /File /Recent Documents list until you open each one, as explained above. With respect, there is no automatic update of OpenOffice - any update must be specifically downloaded and installed. You may have been hit by a Windows Update, which seem to occur at unspecified intervals. and which can corrupt open files. Alternately the damage may possibly be due to over-hasty power-off of computer or closure of laptop lid, before the file housekeeping has been written to disk. As soon as possible try the methods in this tutorial See https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71=85038] for a Tutorial on How to find and un-delete AOO temporary files for detailed instructions on how to a) use the Previous Versions utility (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the file (is there something similar on MacOS and Linux?); b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was when it was last saved with AutoRecovery; c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which have since been deleted; d) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and then deleted. They may not appear in OO's /File /Recent Documents, but as you open each one, it will reappear in that list. The major concern is for your document(s) open at the time of computer or program shutdown. These can be damaged; it is often possible to recover these by the methods outlined in https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71=85038 This gives detailed instructions on how to a) use Previous Versions (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the file. b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was when it was last saved with AutoRecovery; c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which have since been deleted; d) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and then deleted. This may recover your file as it was when you last opened or you last saved it. -- Rory O'Farrell - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer) Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good choice. Start OpenOffice. This cures most spellcheck problems. Loss of spellchecker can occur when the computer has been powered off too swiftly, before the internal housekeeping has been written to disk. After you have closed OpenOffice, use the formal computer power-off procedure to shut the computer down, then wait a few seconds (ten will probably be enough) to allow the internal buffers in the hard disk be flushed to the platters, before pulling the power plug or closing the laptop lid. -- Rory O'Farrell - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org
